Young Protectors: Ravensport (IC)

Post by Horsenhero »

Ravensport Prep.-

Ravensport Preparatory School is a modern private charter school that caters to the cream of Ravensport scoiety as well as acting as a boarding school for students whose parents live elsewhere. Founded in 1795, Ravensport Prep is one of the oldest prep schools in the country. Situated on 20 acres of land on what used to be the outskirts of the city, a border of tall, thick evergreens, bolstered by a stone wall some 8 feet in height helps maintain the illusion the school is removed from the distractions of civilization. While the dormitories and out buildings are still the colonial structures (albeit subject to remodels to bring them up to electrical and fire codes), the main building itself is completely modern. The building is constructed to match the columnar architecture of the older construction, but it was built only a couple years past after the original structure was destroyed by the monstrous villain, Titanothere.

The social structure of Ravensport Prep is very much in line with a traditional boarding school. Since it is co-educational there is both a "Head Boy" and "Head Girl" who represent student interests when dealing with the faculty. The school Headmaster has final say on all school related issues. The school serves grades K-12, but only grades 9-12 use the main building. Kindergarten through 8th grades use what was once a Seminary College which was absorbed into the school around WW1. Rumor has it that there a bomb shelters built on campus during WW2, but if they exist the entrances have long since been covered and they don't appear on the school blueprints on display in the library.

Ravensport Prep has a uniform dress code. Outside of sporting events students wear a fairly traditional uniform of white, button down shirt, navy blue blazer with a school logo patch and gray slacks for boys and gray, knee length skirt for girls. In a nod to modern style students are allowed to wear white athletic shoes instead of traditional oxfords if they choose. Girls who choose ladies oxfords may not have greater than a 4cm heel.

Ministry of Protection: Schism-

The Young Protectors are aware their very existence is the cause of a massive point of contention within the ranks of the Ministry of Protection. While their mentors and others on the team believe young heroes should be trained and brought into "the life" with hands on guidance, others including the mighty Grand Champion view them as child soldiers being irresponsibly endangered. It was out of this philosophical schism the youthful heroes' situation was born. In an effort to stave off U.N. hearings on the matter, the proteges of various Protectors have been enrolled in school and the team no longer invites them to officially participate in missions.

On the other side, members like Io and Mother Knight have witnessed first hand over the course of their immortal lives, the consequences of leaving the development of super-powered individuals to chance. To satisfy that side of the debate, Ministry assets exclusively for the use of the young heroes have been made available. Grand Champion and several others split from the Ministry believing the current arrangement to be a violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the agreement. Complicating things further, rumor has it several villains, under the leadership of Vanos the Dread Lord of Carpathia, have taken on proteges with the express purpose of foiling the development of the next generation of heroes.

YP: Ravensport Day One-

The first day of school is pretty much like the first day of school anywhere with classes being mostly just an orientation period. Campus is a confused zoo as students get to know one another (if new) or reacquaint themselves with old friends. Even at its relatively small size, it's obvious there are a number of cliques at the school despite the best efforts of the staff to quash such behavior. Of those that can be identified at a glance are the Jocks, Goths/Emos and geeks. Unlike many other, larger schools, it's obvious that quite a bit of "cross-pollinating" between cliques happens due to the necessity of small numbers.

A bubblegum chewing girl named China with heavy, dark make up and spiky pink hair has been assigned as the tour guide for the new students.
All I need is a post of what your pc's experience on "orientation day" is like (as brief or detailed as you choose). If you're going to have your character live in the campus dorms as opposed to at the team HQ make sure to mention moving in as well.

'Don't cause any trouble. Don't cause any trouble. Don't...'

Rose kept the mantra going in a constant cycle through her head, repeating it as steadily as she could without actually saying the words out loud- because THAT would constitute causing trouble. That simple directive, in bold print and underlined, had been at the top of the page of rules that her mentor Sequoia had given her when this whole arrangement had been finalized. The rest of the page was mostly about all the ways, specifically, with examples, in which she was NOT to cause trouble- there were a few lines about how the housing and schooling were set up, and her further training, and so on, but she could see where the emphasis was heaviest. No doubt her Aunt and Uncle (or rather, her foster parents) would have produced a very similar list.

Rose had arrived at the school last night, with her one meager trunk of belongings, having officially been moved out of the Ministry's HQ. She had unpacked, but the room still felt awfully empty, and there was no sign of whether or not she was to be assigned a roommate. She had even, somehow, made it through her first night at the school with only a little bit of exploring- she had found the library! And, more importantly, she was sure (or fairly sure, anyway) that the prefect for her floor didn't know she had left her room.

And now, here she was, at the front and center of her group for the orientation tour. She kind of had to be front and center- being undersized for her age meant that she couldn't see over any of the other students- and she didn't want to miss anything. She looked around at the rest of the group while they were waiting- she thought that she recognized a few of the others, but she was pretty sure she shouldn't mention it.

The rest of the new students would certainly notice her though. Even discounting her small size and her unruly mop of curly bright red hair, there was the small matter of her clothing... Her blazer and her skirt were in the regulation style, but they were noticeably too large, and so sharply pressed that they HAD to be brand new. Her sneakers, on the other hand, could only charitably be called white, and were held together with laces that had been broken and retied more than once- it wasn't her fault that the brand new shoes were too stiff, and hurt her feet...

Another moment passed and their guide still hadn't started talking- it looked like she was waiting for one of the other students, one that Rose DIDN'T recognize, to finish a call on his cell phone. Rose had never been that good at waiting, and she began to fidget, actively resisting the urge to go over to the tall trees that lined the wall.

'Don't cause any trouble. Don't cause any trouble. Don't..."

When Io had told him that he'd been enrolled at Ravensport Prep, and that he would be required to vacate his belongings from the Ministry flat where he'd been living, he felt shocked. It was only with her stern, disapproving glare, that he'd been able to keep tears from his face, Io was now the closest thing to a mother that he had, and, at that moment it felt as though she were sending him away. The discussion took them long into the night, as she explained the current political situation surrounding the Young Protector program, and that she and October had come up with a plan that would allow them to end-run around the issue. So it was early morning that he appeared at the gates of the school, no vehicle dropped him off, nobody saw how exactly he arrived, but as the sun rose over Ravenspot Prepatory, the young man was there, a small canvas duffel bag slung over a shoulder, loaded with some few changes of clothes, and personal effects.

Verdejos was clothed in the school uniform, he smiled absently at the other students, looking here and there. He was however, filled with a certain unease at the recent publicity surrounding the schism in the Ministry. The Progenitor's had tampered with his genetic code, manipulating and amplifying his latent metahuman abilities, at times he felt very much the child soldier that the Gran Champion and the U.N. hearings had attempted to label him. It was not, however, the Ministry who had so abruptly changed his life, it was the Progenitor's and their experimentation. During his capture, the tenement he lived in collapsed, injuring many innocents, and ultimately killing his mother. His father blamed him for that death, rejected him because of it, Verdejos too blamed himself for his mother's death. As much as he wanted to, couldn't bring himself to hate his father or his decision.

He scanned the crowd, even as his hand slipped in to the blazer's breast pocket, slipping out a small multi-colored crystal. He grasped it loosely, intimately familiar with it's crystalline structure. Io had first discovered him with the crystal at the old facility, when pressed, he admitted to creating it from ambient carbon atoms. She had challenged him to change various properties of the crystal, color, opacity, and density while leaving it's shape unaltered. Each change required intricate manipulation of the crystal's atomic structure, changing small portions of it's characteristic's while leaving it's basic structure unaltered. It was calming, almost meditative, and holding it in his hands let him focus on the here and now rather than the ambiguity of his place within the Ministry, and the role of the Young Protectors.

He couldn't help but notice the young girl who stood at the head of the gathered students, pale, freckles, and an unruly mop of red curls, she shifted from foot to foot, looking nervously from China, to another young man speaking on a cell, rudely ignoring his classmates and peers. Verdejo, shifted through the crowd towards the oblivious young man still chatting on his phone. Likely from some prestigious family, attending some Ivy League school with near limitless options ahead of him opened by old school money. He rudly shouldered past him as he moved towards the front of the class, whispering as he did so, "Lose the phone pendejo, some of us actually *want* to be here."

DEVIL DOG/JAKSON MEDLOCKE

HERO POINTS:1

Standing at the rear of the group, Jakson is dressed in his school attire, though he had opted to wear the white athletic shoes instead of dress shoes. His longer than shoulder length hair is pulled into a ponytail that is tucked into the collar of his blazer. His shades disguise that his eyes are scanning the people around him. "This year will be different," he thinks. "Classmates instead of tutors. Samuel thinks that I don't interact enough with my peers in a social situation. Of course that's easier said than done." I'm guessing that is why he wants me to live on campus."

Directing his question to the guide, "How soon until we get this show on the road?"

Rakshasa
aka Nameer
HP: 1 LP: 2
Condition: Prowling the school grounds

The limousine had dropped Nameer off at the front gate with the long line of other long black sedans doing the same. It was his sixteenth year, the last two running Tiger Woman in Mumbai, after she had moved her corporate offices out of New Dehli ... Changes had to made after the "war" with his uncles. The situation with the Protectors and the UN had come at a time when Priyanka decided Nameer needed to learning of things outside of India, of things she did not have the background to teach him ... and maybe time to learn how to take over when she would rejoin her husband.

Shifting into the human form he was most comfortable with Nameer said his goodbyes, hugging the small woman who had cared for him since he was an orphaned cub and could still take him down whenever she chose regardless of how tall he had grown. Taking on his "secret identity" was always amusing to Nameer. He had to yet to learn how to change his mass and size when he shifted shapes, so when in human form he retained most of almost three hundred pounds of lean muscle. It was less obvious when he took the shape of an adult, it hadn't occurred to him yet to try and shift as a female, but as a teenager he stood out in either form ... less so as Nameer of course.

A head taller than most his classmates, Nameer quietly waited for the "edgy" girl with the name tag China to begin the tour. As the they waited longer and longer though Nameer's cat-like curiosity started getting the better of him and slowly without realizing it he had started slipping to the front of the tour group ready to explore the grounds on his own. Speaking mildly to one of the staff nearby, "Excuse me, where are the restrooms?"

At the same time...

The Tour-

With a half-lidded gaze, China looked at Jackson with ill-concealed hostility. "Hold onto your sack dude, I'll get going in a minute."

Just as that exchange is happening, Verdejos bumps the student on the phone and makes his threat. The young man turns and smiles while holding up a finger as if to tell him to wait a minute. "And run my usual numbers at Los Alaminos too Chuck. Thanks. You the man."

Tapping the screen he cuts off the call. "Sorry amigo, but if I don't get my bets placed early, I'll never get them done on a school day."

"Hey!" China's voice cuts through the air before Verdejo can respond. "Dumb and dumber! We have a request to start the tour, so pay attention!"

"Welcome to Ravensport Preparatory School, where the staff really loves handing out demerits. Keep that in mind, because you might find yourself right where I am now if you aren't careful."

Popping her gum loudly she takes a deep breath. "This," She points behind her. "is our building. It is where the older students take classes."

"That," She points to a building some distance away. "is where the plebs take classes. Do not go to that building. You are too old to be in that building unless you score a gig as a teacher's aid."

"Ravensport has a tough academic schedule. It's in the student handbook. We have sports." The word sports comes out like its a curse. "I don't know what sports and I don't care. If you care...it's in the student handbook. For those of you living on campus, the dormitories have communal showers, but, they are segregated by gender. I'm sure you all know what that means so don't ask any stupid questions about it. For those of you too shy to use a communal shower... you're gonna stink. The dormitories have cafeterias that are open all day. From 10 am to 6 pm the cafeterias are co-ed. After that or before that, boys eat in the cafeteria at the boys dorm and girls in the girls dorm. It's not complicated, but in case you need a reference guide...it's in the student handbook."

She stops for a moment, then points in the general direction of the entry gate. "Curfew is at 10 pm. The gate will automatically lock at 10 pm. The doors to the dormitories lock at 10 pm. If there is a fire or something, the doors open from the inside, but are locked from the outside. This means you can leave your dorm after 10, but you can't get back in. If you sneak out of the dorms after curfew...demerits. If you attempt to sneak in after curfew...demerits. The school has a state of the art security system including hidden CCTV cameras, so if you think you're sneaky...take it from me... there will be demerits."

"Alcohol, drugs, weapons, etcetera are all forbidden on campus. If you are discovered with any of the above or other contraband...at the very least, demerits. At the worst, a visit from the nice detectives from Ravensport PD. If you are uncertain about the complete list of contraband...it's in the student handbook."

"If you live off campus you're a lucky F#@%*& and much of what I just said doesn't apply to you. If you have a question about what does or does not apply to you...consult the student handbook. It's a great way to test your literacy."

"Fighting and most other forms of fun recreational activities are against the rules. More demerits." China pauses again, letting her hostile gaze sweep over the assembled new students. "Finally...she," China points at a female student with porcelain skin and dark hair cut in a chin length bob. Her uniform is perhaps a little on the tight side, showing off more curve than the designers likely intended while still being arguably within regulations. "...is my roommate. If any of you think you're going to start some student romance and disturb my privacy with your shenanigans...I will murder you in your sleep. That's your first and only warning."

"Are there any questions...about something not covered in the student handbook?"
If anyone has the Well-Informed advantage, you may make a roll.

Feeling more than a little agitated, Verdejo concentrated on his breathing, considering his surroundings he had to expect rich and entitled. This was going to be a thing, he needed to prove himself, academically, to begin to earn a fraction of his peers respect. As he focused his attention back to China and the tour, a smile crept across his face as he took in his surroundings, memorizing his surroundings so he could recreate them in his mind, should he need to find his way here or there across the sprawling campus.

The young woman's running commentary seemed to indicate that the fact she was introducing the new freshmen to the campus was disciplinary in nature. He absently wondered what she had done to earn the required demerits she, so often, spoke of, to earn this particular responsibility. He nodded at his peers as he continued with the tour, and as the tour winded down, he began to refer to the Student Handbook provided, noting the fitness facilities, it was something that Io demanded of him. His abilities were his strength, however, he had to be able to protect himself on a physical basis as well, without relying on those selfsame powers.

He'd made a mental commitment to both track and field, as well as the rowing club which was offered, so he could work on both endurance and core strength. He nearly chuckled to himself, as his mental dialogue seemed to transition to a lecture from Io. As he shook his head, trying to bring himself back to the present, he ended up locking eyes with the dark haired young woman whom China had identified as her room mate. He smiled, blushed, balked, and backed up, ducking behind a tall dark skinned young man behind him, Nameer, if he remembered correctly.

N'SeKt/Tobin Grimes

...Late...Dammit, Late, Late Late...#@#@$%!!...Tobin is running. And running quite hard. He was late for orientation. LATE. All those years, in all those exotic locations...in jungles, in deserts...and not once was he ever late. He woke with the sunrise every day...EVERY DAY.

...Dammit Toby...getting soft...
skidding around a corner, Tobin spots the group gathered, listening to the student adviser. In a brief second, the Khrysalid fluttered on his chest and his body accelerated just slightly. Unfortunately, this simply made Tobin misjudge his sprint. His eyes blinked and he was in the middle of the group...tumbling as he tried to avoid colliding with some of the others.

As everything slowed down to a crawl, Tobin hears Daniel telling him “...just be yourself...don't worry what you think they know of you...just be you...” Daniel's simple advice and rock steady earnestness was comforting. While he was there. Now? Now it was nothing more than a reminder that Tobin was in for a rude awakening. Then time sped back up as Tobin collided with the wall that was suddenly there.

Tours End-

Jax notices the pale skinned, dark haired girl, despite being a good 30 yards from them and involved in a conversation with two other girls, turns at China's mention of her name. China was loud, but not so loud that the other girl, facing away from the orientation group, should have heard what was being said...but apparently she did. She also seemed preoccupied with someone in the crowd, though at this distance it was impossible for him to tell exactly who.

Then it struck him...she was a vampire. He knew that some residents from New Dacia, commonly called Carpathia due to its location south of Wallachia in the Carpathian Mountains, studied abroad, but it was still a little disconcerting to see one in the flesh. Of course compared to some of the deadlier members of New Dacian society, vampires and werewolves were downright mundane.

The everyone was distracted by the sound of flesh smacking against brick. Enter Tobin. China looks at Tobin in irritation. "I can't be sure, but I'm pretty sure if you get blood on the wall it's worth demerits."

"Okay, for the rest of the day you're on your own. Classes start at 8 in the morning...if you've got early classes. Extracurricular activities...I don't know...it's in the g0# d@?$ handbook I'm sure. That's it! You're on your own for the rest of today."

With that the pink haired girl with the attitude problem turns to leave.

"Nice entrance, mister," Rose chirped as Tobin started to recover from his arrival. "Can I have your demerits? It seems like they love handing them out for, like, everything-especially fun stuff, so they must be good..." Honestly, Rose HAD read through the entire student handbook, as part of the "don't cause any trouble" list- but it was SO BORING. The tour hadn't been all that great either, but that wasn't China's fault, not really- it was obvious she hadn't wanted to act as a guide. But if they had the rest of the day free...

Once China had started to move away from the group, Rose raised her voice just a little. "That was the first part of the tour, just the first part. Now comes the fun part- the EXPLORING! Who wants to come with? I mean, I heard there were old bomb shelters around somewhere! But they aren't in the handbook, or the map in the library, so we HAVE to go find them. It is probably like a test or something- you know, 'how well did you learn about our campus and its history?', right? Show of hands, who is going?"

Verdejo's attention quickly shifted to the lean young man who seemingly just sprinted into a wall. His own heart was pounding in his chest, his stomach still squeamish, after meeting the dark gaze of China's room mate for a moment, he could only imagine this young man's embarrassment. He quickly stepped out from behind Nameer's impressive bulk, and grasped the slender young man's arm, as he knelt beside him.

"Nothing broken," he studied his face as he completed a cursory check, "though you've got some scrapes across your chin and nose. How are you feeling, light headed, short of breath?" He paused, assessing whether the young man was concussed, confused, "Oh, hey, sorry, my name's Verdejo, you?"
OOC: As Verdejo has no Pop Culture knowledge, nor is Io real big on television, I am playing up the fact that he has no idea who Tobin Grimes is.
