HISTORY:
Unlike others who bear the name "Green Lantern," Alan Scott's power does not come from the Guardians of the Universe, but from the Starheart, a magical entity once imprisoned by the Guardians. The Starheart found its way to Earth where in 1939, in the shape of a lantern, it saved Alan from a train wreck. At the Lantern's mental direction, Alan fashioned a ring from it that allowed him to tap the Starheart's great power. Perhaps influenced subconsciously by the Starheart's history, Alan adopted the identity of Green Lantern (the name of the great Corps administered by the Guardians).

Alan was a founding member of the Justice Society and was instrumental in many wartime battles. After the war, as a broadcast executive in the late forties, Alan Scott had a flirtatious relationship with the costumed villainess the Harlequin (who unbeknownst to Alan, was secretly his secretary, Molly Mayne). Molly even admitted that her career as a "criminal" was just a ruse to get close to Green Lantern. The Harlequin eventually turned over a new leaf, becoming an undercover agent for the FBI. She left Alan's life without confessing her true identity or her real feelings.

Alan subsequently met and married a young woman named Alyx Florin. He was unaware that she was actually Rose Canton (a.k.a. The Thorn), a schizophrenic but reformed enemy of the Flash. Alyx disappeared on their wedding night, starting a fire that led Alan to believe she had died. In fact, she survived and discovered that she was pregnant with twins. The children were born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised separately by adoptive families as Jennifer-Lynn Hayden and Todd Rice. Alyx was taken to the Amazons' Reformation Island.

Jennie-Lynn and Todd, who developed superhuman powers as a result of their father's connection to the mystic Starheart, did not meet until adolescence, and set out to uncover the identities of their real parents. They adopted the costumed identities of Jade and Obsidian and confronted Alan about their parentage. And truly, Alan had no clue. Also during this time, he renewed his acquaintance with Molly and discovered her past as the Harlequin; the pair finally gave in to their longtime attraction. But Rose Canton also resurfaced. Just before her death, she revealed the circumstances of Jennie and Todd's births. Alan and Molly were married, but soon separated by the JSA's banishment to Limbo. They were reunited two years later when the Justice Society returned to Earth.

At one point in recent years the Starheart made Alan appear much younger, and he took the new name and costume, Sentinel. He encountered a mysterious new Harlequin (IV), who may have been a manifestation of the Starheart, which became malevolent. The Starheart was apparently destroyed and Alan's powers were diminished and he returned to his original uniform. Jade also lost her powers during this incident.

When the Justice Society reformed, Alan was there as always to anchor the team. One of their first major cases pitted Sentinel against his son, Obsidian, who had been seduced by dark forces. Alan was forced to beat Todd into retreat. It soon became obvious (and was confirmed by Dr. Mid-Nite) that Alan had become the living embodiment of the Starheart. Any changes to his age or powers are merely psychosomatic. Obsidian returned in alliance with Mordru and Eclipso. This time, Alan set things right and banished Todd's dark powers, perhaps for good. After this, Alan reclaimed the name Green Lantern. Todd was taken into D.E.O. custody and vowed to atone for his actions. The recent events involving his son have made Alan somewhat overbearing and overprotective of the JSA's other "children."

During the great Crisis created by Alexander Luthor and Superboy-Prime, Alan and Jade followed Donna Troy into space to investigate a cosmic rift. When Luthor was defeated, the rift began collapsing and Jennie-Lynn was caught in one of the shock waves. Alan was on Thanagar when she lost her life. He learned afterwards that as she died, she returned the power once given to her by Kyle Rayner. Thus in a way, she continues to live on within Rayner.

When the rift collapsed for good, Alan and the remaining heroes were sent reeling through space and time. He and several others reemerged a week later on Earth. Alan was among the lucky ones, having only lost an eye. Alan then somehow gained Adam's right eye and lost his left eye completely.

His missing eye was later replaced by a portion of his daughter Jade's mystic green energy. After being put into a comatose state during an attack by the Gentleman Ghost, Jade appeared to him, told him goodbye and granted him another portion of her green energy. His missing eye is currently replaced by a green glowing orb that, due to its mystical origins and connection to Jade, allows him to track astral and mystical energy forms such as ghosts.

The JSA had also become a spectre of its former self, and its members became disillusioned about the team's effectiveness. This was underscored by the advent of Lex Luthor's Everyman technology, which awarded powers to a girl who adopted Jade's codename. Alan had to restrain Obsidian from accosting the girl.

Soon Alan was approached by the spy organization Checkmate, which was reorganizing under U.N. control. They invited Alan to become their White King, which he accepted. His time with Checkmate was brief.

Scott soon found himself in a moral conflict with Checkmate's Black Knight Sasha Bordeaux over the violent nature of Checkmate, particularly after Bordeaux and her team slaughtered dozens of Kobra operatives during a raid on a facility. Bordeaux contended that the ends justified the means, while Scott adhered to the principle that heroes should not kill unless absolutely necessary; Bordeaux responded to this by suggesting that Scott should resign. Concurrent with this internal conflict, Scott and "White Queen" Amanda Waller attempted to keep the organization from being discontinued by political forces.

Another JSA member, Mr. Terrific, succeeded him in the post.

Meanwhile, Alan was urged by the Justice League to re-establish the JSA as an organization that cares for the legacy of its heroes. When his time with Checkmate came to an end, Alan resumed an active role in the JSA.

During The Blackest Night, Alan and the rest of the JSA appear in specifically battling the reanimated Kal-L and Black Lantern versions of dead Justice Society members. After Jakeem Thunder is knocked out, Alan is one of the heroes who combines his powers into a "Black Lantern Bomb" designed to mimic Jakeem's Thunderbolt abilities, destroying all of the Black Lanterns in New York. In the final battle of the event, his daughter Jade is resurrected by the power of white light.

Alan is shown in the arms of Obsidian, convulsing and writhing as a green light pours from his body. His body possessed, Alan flies off with his JSA teammates in hot pursuit, a chase which eventually leads to Germany. In Germany, the JSA meet up with Batman's new Justice League, and find that Jade (who had been staying on Oa since her resurrection), has returned to Earth inside of a green meteor, which is revealed to be the legendary Starheart that gave Alan his powers. Sebastian Faust tells the two teams that the Starheart has been gradually taking control of people on Earth for quite some time, and now that it is on Earth, it is growing more powerful and driving metahumans all over the world insane. Jade states that the Starheart captured her in space and purposely brought her to Earth to find Alan, and also states that it is her fault that her father is now in danger. Just then, Alan awakens and his costume transforms into his suit of armor from Kingdom Come, and he then tells the assembled heroes that he intends on destroying the world.

Starman is sent into space to search for Alan, and finds that the he has constructed a massive fortress on the surface of the moon. Before Starman can warn the others, Alan appears in front of him, and tears his gem (the source of his abilities) from his chest, thus rendering him powerless. The Starheart begins using its influence to corrupt various metahumans with magical or elemental abilities, which creates chaos across the globe. Realizing that the heroes must defeat Alan in order to put an end to the madness taking hold of the earth, Batman recruits Miss Martian in order to get a mental lock on Starman, which in turn provides the Justice League with Alan's location. Batman then assembles a small strikeforce consisting of himself, Jade, Hourman, Donna Troy, Jesse Quick and Mr. America, all of whom have a low chance of being possessed by the Starheart. Mister Miracle arrives and informs the team that Alan has most likely installed Fourth World defenses in his base, and offers to use his knowledge of such technology to guide them through the fortress. Jade uses her powers to restore Alan to normal. With his sanity restored, Alan chooses to allow the Emerald City he created on the moon to stay, and eventually the city becomes populated by various magical creatures from throughout the DCU.

After the event of the Brightest Day, Alan and the rest of the JSA travel to the city of Monument Point after it is attacked by a superpowered terrorist named Scythe. Just before being defeated, Scythe snaps Alan's neck. In the subsequent story, it is revealed that Scythe is the product of Nazi genetic engineering, and that Alan and Jay had been tasked by the president with killing the experiment back when he was in infant during World War 2. The two heroes could not agree on a course of action, and as a result Scythe was allowed to live. Doctor Mid-Nite discovers that the injuries Alan sustained have rendered him paralyzed, and that any attempt to heal himself could break his constant concentration, which could result in the Starheart once again regaining control of his body.

Jade eventually visits her bed-ridden father in the Emerald City, and offers to use her abilities to help him walk again. Alan declines his daughter's offer, reasoning that if the Starheart were to once again take over his body, it could result in the deaths of everyone in the city. Eclipso eventually attacks the city, which results in Jesse Quick having to get Alan to safety.

Alan eventually constructed a suit of armor from the Starheart energy which acted as an exoskeleton and gave him back a degree of mobility. He seemingly dissipated, however, after releasing the full power of the Starheart to seemingly destroy the fallen god called D'Arken. The JSA buried an empty coffin.

Alan and the rest of the Society encountered John Stewart and Barry Allen during the Justice/Doom War, when the latter two had travelled to 1941 in search of a shard of the Totality. Scott restrained them when the JSA found them in their headquarters and learned that the Legion of Doom had already won in JSA's timeline two weeks ago.

Barry and John explained their mission to them and how they came into their timeline, also stating they were members of the Justice League. The JSA came to the realization that their existence must have been erased if the the two hadn't heard of them, with all of the team members then introducing themselves. Scott expressed surprise when John brings up the Green Lantern Corps and implores John to tell him more about it, but is stopped by Doctor Fate who states it will be dangerous for them to even interact as the timeline had been altered many times.

The JSA agreed to team up with Barry and John and headed to Pearl Harbor to find the Totality shard kept there but found that the Legion of Doom had taken over the minds of all soldiers present there. He battled the Japanese forces under their control alongside John and was impressed by his great willpower but remarked that he needed to be more truthful. After getting into the base, they were attacked by American soldiers under the Legion's thrall and eventually confronted their enemies. Aquaman however subdued the Legion and stated that they needed to get to Atlantis in order to get the Totality back to their time.

As they travel to Atlantis, Alan reminded him to be more open about his emotions. John remarked that he was dismayed at people siding with Doom in both their times, but Alan stated that it isn't about what they achieve but fighting for what they want. The JSA and the League members were however stopped by the Atlantean guards, realizing that Atlantis was now ruled by Vandal Savage of the past and his Legionnaires Club who demanded they hand over the Totality. They were however again confronted by the Legion of Doom and the god Poseidon.

John convinced Vandal to help them by stating that the real fight was always within them and that the fate of the universe depended on his decision. Impressed, Alan stated that he was worthy successor to the name of Green Lantern. As Alan and the JSA battled the Legion of Doom, Vandal opened a portal for them to travel to the League's timeline. After arriving in the timeline, Alan told John that the JSA will stay there to help them fight against the forces of Perpetua after she regained part of her former powers.

On July 16th, 1940, Alan was riding a train one evening, but a bridge it was passing through collapsed. He was supposed to grasp at a Lantern that would save his life and transform him into the first Green Lantern of Earth, however Doctor Manhattan moved the lantern six inches out of Alan's reach so that Scott dies in the train accident and leaves no family behind, as the green lantern is passed through different locations thereafter.

His death causes Justice Society of America to never exist in the first place as he was a major cause behind it. Their past existence was first leaked to Lois Lane secretly by Ozymandias. She however had never heard of them, a result of Dr Manhattan's meddling with the timeline. Manhattan however undid his alterations and moved the Green Lantern back into Scott's reach after being inspired by Superman's words. This caused Scott to survive and the JSA to be restored back to reality.

Scott was investigated under the campaign to root out suspected communists by Senator Joe McCarthy, but declared innocent. The JSA including Alan came to the aid of Superman in Washington, D.C. and helped him stop the ongoing battle between the metahumans. Scott later promised that JSA will investigate the role of the Department of Metahuman Affairs in the "Supermen theory", which alleged that the American government had been creating metahumans to act as its tools.

Manhattan's attempt at fixing the timeline and reality failed however, as they merely re-adjusted into a new version. Wonder Woman became the world's first superhero and her heroics and ability to see the greatness in every individual inspired Alan to become a superhero himself.

Before that, Alan and his secret love Jimmy Henton traveled aboard a train to, according to him, try to escape from himself. The train would pass over a bridge that Alan designed; he recently outbid a rival engineer named Albert Dekker for that bridge contract, but a bomb exploded beneath the bridge derailing the train. Everyone on board was killed in the explosion – everyone but Alan Scott. When Alan woke up, he tried to save the dying Jimmy, who pointed out to him the presence of a strange green light among the wreckage.

With this fantastic new power under his command, Alan set out to find Albert Dekker – the man responsible for blowing up the bridge and killing Jimmy. Glowing like a green phantom, he phased through the walls of Dekker's office and made him see justice.

After a revealing encounter with Jimmy's mother, Doris Henton, Alan promised her that he would continue to use that light, which she said was also in her son, to help people find their way through the darkness.

Alan returned to the present timeline along with other Justice Society members when Wally West, having gained the powers of Dr. Manhattan and acquiring the Mobius Chair, attempted to fix time by merging the various timelines, but he was now significantly old. He guarded the Valhalla Cemetery alongside other surviving JSA members, after the Batman Who Laughs and the Dark Knights conquered the world.

When Alan was called to be the sentinel overlooking the Totality ship of their world, he needed to have a frank conversation with his twin children before he left, revealing that he is gay. Todd and Jennie-Lynn accepted their father's truth, supporting him unconditionally.

HISTORY:
Hal Jordan was born in Coast City to Martin Jordan and Jessica Jordan, the middle child of three children. He lived with his older brother Jack and a younger brother Jim. As a young child, he idolized his father, a test pilot who worked for Ferris Aircraft. At a very young age, he had to face his greatest fears when his father died in a plane crash right before his eyes. Despite his family's wishes, he followed in his father's footsteps and eventually joined the United States Air Force on his 18th birthday, turning up that very morning outside the Armed Forces Career Center, before it had even opened.

Many years later, a dying alien named Abin Sur, member of the Green Lantern Corps, crash-landed his starship in the Californian desert. Having selected a replacement officer for his position, the power ring chose Hal Jordan for his ability to overcome great fear. The ring and its abilities were explained to him, and he inherited the mantle of Green Lantern. Acting as a galactic police officer, it was his job to serve and protect all life in Sector 2814. He would soon learn that there were another 3599 Green Lanterns across the universe, all monitored and empowered by mystical creatures called the Guardians. Hal received training from some of the best the Corps had to offer, including drill sergeant Kilowog, and his mentor Sinestro. During his training, Hal learned that Sinestro has been subjugating his home planet, Korugar, through fear, using his ring. After Hal reported these acts to the Guardians and fellow Corps members, he battled Sinestro, and emerged victorious. Along with the rest of the Corps, he then testified against Sinestro at his trial. Expelled from the Corps and banished by the Guardians to the Antimatter Universe as punishment, Sinestro became a sworn enemy to the Corps and gained a new Qward power ring, exacting the start of his revenge.

As Green Lantern, Hal Jordan patrolled the galaxy and took on many missions in space. He continued to spend his time at home working at Ferris Aircraft, where he romantically pursued his boss, the lovely Carol Ferris. He would entrust his secrets to a young Eskimo lad who worked as his mechanic, Tom Kalmaku.

Green Lantern was one of the founding members of the Justice League of America, along with the Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This group first banded together when they met to fight Appellaxians invading the planet, and realized that they worked much stronger as a team than any of them could have as individuals.

Hal and Oliver Queen are good friends, often adventuring together, and also getting along with his girlfriend, Dinah Lance. Hal was also friends with the late Barry Allen, the second Flash, who along with Hal, were both founding members of the Justice League of America. Later still, Hal retained a friendship with their respective sidekicks, Roy Harper and Wally West, the third Flash.

Something of a ladies man, Hal had courted more than his share of beautiful women in his time. Of these women, the one to whom Hal may have been closest was Carol Ferris, who was his boss when he worked as a test pilot for her company, Ferris Aircraft. Unfortunately, their relationship was repeatedly strained by Carol's position as Hal's boss and her dedication to running her company, as well as Hal going through a period of instability where he moved around constantly trying new jobs that did not suit him. Even worse, Carol was chosen by the Zamarons to be Star Sapphire, a powerful super-villainess who repeatedly menaced the world, specifically men.

One of the greatest secrets kept by the Guardians was that their infamous yellow impurity was in fact an ancient monster named Parallax who they had imprisoned in their Central Power Battery. Parallax was the physical embodiment of fear on the emotional electromagnetic spectrum, the opposite of the green willpower. After the greatest tragedy of his life took away everything he held dear, Hal became susceptible to fear, and the monster gained root in his consciousness through his ring. Through influencing his actions, it would eventually possess him and turn him into one of the greatest villains the universe had ever seen.

Hal Jordan's home Coast City had been completely destroyed by Cyborg Superman and Mongul during Reign of the Supermen! in a gigantic explosion, reducing it to a smoldering crater. Returning to Earth after the events of Trinity, Green Lantern was horrified, and he immediately went after Mongul and beat the galactic conqueror in single combat.

Afterward, with everything he cherished piles of cinder and ash, Hal tried to use his ring to recreate Coast City in its entirety. This was a massive construct that required all of his ring's charge, and he began interacting with characters from his life who had perished in the slaughter. A projection of the Guardians was sent to him furious that he was using his powers for personal reasons, and threatening him unless he immediately reported back to them for disciplinary action. Enraged that they would ignore the personal loss he had suffered in the name of the Corps and try to punish him for his humanity, Hal, driven insane by grief, decided to meet them head on and clash with the men who had destroyed his life. In this state of madness, he was intent on obtaining their vast powers so that he might recreate all he had lost. A team of the Green Lantern Corps' greatest warriors were sent to oppose him, and stop him before he could reach their homeworld. Hal Jordan single-handedly went through Boodikka, General Kreon, Graf Toren, Hannu, Jack T. Chance, Ke'Haan, Laira and Tomar-Tu. He left all those he defeated floating in space, and took their rings in his possession, adding them to his collection. Touching down on Oa, he killed Kilowog in combat. His greatest adversary Sinestro was released from imprisonment to act as the last line of defense, and Hal snapped his neck. Then, he entered the Central Power Battery and absorbed the energies inside... killing the Guardians and effectively destroying the entire Green Lantern Corps. He emerged in the new identity of Parallax.

As Parallax, Hal fought many of his former allies and Kyle Rayner, the newest Green Lantern of Earth, while attempting to restore Coast City. He conspired with Extant to restart the universe and attempted to sway others to his cause by offering them wealth and power in this reborn universe, the purpose of which was to 'set things right.' Hal was ultimately defeated by heroes of Earth.

Hal seemed to gain lucidity, healing the paralyzed John Stewart and resurrecting Oliver Queen, who had died in an explosion. He extinguished his powers and sacrificed himself to destroy the Sun Eater and re-ignite Earth's sun.

Some time later, the Spectre was without a host and demons sought to use it to their advantage. With the help of the Sentinels of Magic, Hal became the new host for the Spectre. Hal attempted to bend the Spectre's mission from vengeance to redemption, using his powers to remove the Star Sapphire persona from Carol. However, the Spectre was the stronger of the two minds, and Hal had little success.

But the Spectre had alternate motives for attaching to Hal Jordan. He explained to Hal that the parasitic fear demon known as Parallax had taken him over while it was trapped by the Guardians in the Central Battery, having been awoken and directed to Hal by Sinestro. Though Parallax was able to supress Hal and take over the Spectre, Hal was able to fight off Parallax and separate both Parallax and the Spectre from his soul. Ganthet sent a beacon of light to guide Hal's soul back to his body, and Hal Jordan was reborn as the Green Lantern. Together, with Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kilowog, they defeat Sinestro (foiling his ultimate goal of eliminating the Corps), re-imprison Parallax in the Central Power Battery, and the Green Lantern Corps is reborn.
Return to the Corps

Seeking to atone for his actions while under Parallax's influence, he has become the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 once again. He also rejoined the Justice League, despite Batman's seeming mistrust of him. Hal also got a new test pilot job at Coast City, which he had subconsciously rebuilt while Parallax was reemerging. Hal later helped rescue various missing Green Lanterns from Hank Henshaw and the Manhuters on Biot, including some he had battled during his Parallax induced rampage toward Oa, as well as his former lover Arisia. During the Sinestro Corps War, Coast City was targeted for destruction by the Sinestro Corps, and Hal urged the city to evacuate. Instead, people all over the city put out green lights in support of Hal and the corps. Hal and Kyle Rayner were able to defeat Sinestro in hand to hand combat, and place him under arrest, ending the war.

After the events of the Sinestro Corps War, Hal is one of the Green Lanterns chosen to escort Sinestro to Korugar, where he (Sinestro) will be executed. Upon arrival, the escort team is ambushed by the Sinestro Corps, and again later by the Red Lanterns. The Red Lanterns capture Sinestro, leaving both Green Lantern- and Sinestro Corps members behind to die. Hal, and the rest of the Green Lanterns, are then rescued by the Blue Lantern Saint Walker. He accompanies Walker to Odym, home of the Blue Lantern Corps, were he witnesses the induction of a new Blue Lantern, Warth. Hal argues with Ganthet about rescueing Sinestro, only for him to agree to said rescue.

Hal then reluctantly teams up with Walker and Warth to rescue Sinestro from Atrocitus. In a conversation with Walker, he then discovers Ganthet is expecting him to join the Blue Lantern Corps as it's leader. On Ysmault, Hal is then captured by the Red Lanterns, and hung from a cross, right next to Sinestro. The Blue Lanterns, and the Sinestro Corps, who arrived moments before, then free Hal Jordan and Sinestro, respectively. Trying to free Laira from the influence of the red ring, Hal nearly succeeds before seeing Laira killed by Sinestro. Losing all self-control, Hal's dormant anger unleashes as he attempts to murder Sinestro, which attracts a red power ring, inducting him into the Red Lantern Corps.

Under the influence of the red ring, Hal attacks both the Sinestro Corps and Blue Lanterns. Unlike the other Red Lanterns, Hal is indeed able to create constructs with the red ring. When Hal again attempts to murder Sinestro, Walker forces his blue ring on Hal in a desperate attempt to free the Green Lantern from the red rings' influence. Successfully breaking the red ring's hold, Walker returns Hal to normal. Hal then attacks Atrocitus, during which the red ring explodes. While Atrocitus is left wounded, Hal remains unharmed, wearing a Green/Blue Lantern hybrid uniform, with neither Lantern knowing why.

Hal returns to Odym with Saint Walker and Warth to try and remove the blue ring. He meets up with Ganthet and Sayd to tell them he will not abandoned the Green Lanterns to join the Blue Lanterns. Ganthet tells him this was never his intent to make him a Blue Lantern, but to become leader of the Blue Lantern Corps as Green Lantern, reasoning that Hal's willpower would be strong enough to power the whole Blue Lantern Corps. Less then thrilled of being thought of as a battery. Hal asked how to remove the blue ring. Ganthet said the only way to remove it is for Hal use up the rings charge, which he can only do if has a spark of hope. Hal is then called back to Oa by the Guardians so that they can remove the blue ring themselves.

The Guardians are unable to remove the blue ring but continue to blast Hal with green energy in an attempt to destroy it. John stops them from continuing to blast Hal since it was having no apparent effect. Salakk informs the Guardians that Stel had an encounter with an Orange Lantern. A hologram of Larfleeze appears from Stel's body. Larfleeze gives demands to the Guardians, however Scar destroys the hologram. Scar then requests a new law be made, making the Vega System no longer off-limits and that the Guardians get involved in the war themselves.

Hal is one of the Green Lanterns chosen to travel with the Guardians to face Larfleeze. Larfleeze takes an interest in Hal's blue ring and decides to take him underground to separate him from the rest of the Lanterns. He demands Hal give him the blue ring. Hal has a conversation with Larfleeze, where he learns that the Orange Lanterns are just constructs of the beings Larfleeze killed. After a brief battle, Hal agrees to give Larfleeze his blue ring, but only if Larfleeze tells him how he met the Guardians. Using the blue ring's recharging ability to his advantage, Hal creates an army of Green Lantern constructs to battle the Orange Lanterns. Realizing that Larfleeze's ring must be constantly recharged by his orange power battery to create his Orange Lanterns, Hal tries to steal the battery. While holding the battery, Hal falls under its influence; however, Larfleeze takes his battery back and uses it to create a giant construct of himself.

Unable to make a dent in his construct, Hal is frustrated that he is unable to make his ring work correctly. He knows that they'll beat Agent Orange, but he just doesn't see how. Suddenly, the Blue ring registers sincerity in Hal's belief that they will defeat Larfleeze, and unleashes a massive blast of blue light, which destroys the Larfleeze construct. The ring then leaves his finger, and initiates a sector scan for Sector 2828. The Guardians then make a new pact with Larfleeze, but do not tell the Green Lanterns.

Hal meets Barry Allen, the Flash, at the unmarked grave of Bruce Wayne. The two friends discuss Bruce's death and their own deaths. Hal tells Barry that his funeral was attended by many people even those from different times and universes, while his own tombstone was desecrated due to his actions as Parallax. Hal believes that after Barry died, villains became more deadly and the Justice League was no longer untouchable. After discussing the deaths of Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Batman, the pair leave.

Hal, along with John, Guy, and Kyle, attend a parade in Coast City on the anniversary of Superman's death, which has become a national holiday for fallen heroes. Hal thinks about the deaths that have affected the four Earth Green Lanterns such as: his father, Martin Jordan; Abin Sur; Katma Tui; John's wife; Alex DeWitt and Jade, both former girlfriends of Kyle. He mentions that Ice's return from the dead makes Guy the only one of the four with a happy ending. After the parade, Hal meets up with Barry at the Hall of Justice, where the two look over the JLA morgue, which contains mostly supervillain remains. Hal explains that supervillain remains are put in a vault since Dick Grayson uncovered a corpse-harvesting ring. The conversation leads Barry to question how many heroes died since he was gone, which Hal shows him through his ring. The pair are then contacted by Alfred, who tells them that Bruce's grave was dug up and his skull is missing.

Hal and Barry go to Gotham to investigate, when the previously deceased J'onn J'onzz appears before them as a Black Lantern, telling them that they should both be dead. After fighting John, he retreats and Jordan and Barry continue investigating. He finds himself facing many of his deceased allies, enemies, and people he failed to save reanimated as undead Black Lanterns under the control of the Green Lantern Corps' ancient enemy Nekron. Hal finds himself not only teaming up with Barry, who is also resurrected from his death, but also must work with his enemies Sinestro, Atrocitus, Larfleeze, and his former love Carol Ferris (who is now a Star Sapphire once more). He also allies with Saint Walker from the Blue Lantern Corps, Indigo Tribe member Indigo-1, and Guardians Ganthet and Sayd, in order to save the universe.

Along the way, Hal and Barry battle their personal demons as they face the consequences of being resurrected. Nekron's black rings then seek to claim them as Black Lanterns. After Hal and Barry escape from the black rings' pursuit, Ganthet duplicates the rings of each respective power of the emotional spectrum in hope of aid from seven new Lanterns who are deputized for temporary membership in each Lantern Corps individually. Jordan is shocked to find the new Lanterns are in the forms of heroes and villains alike. While defending Coast City, the Lanterns encounter a Black Lantern Spectre and are hard pressed to defeat him, threatening Hal into almost becoming a Black Lantern himself. Remembering from the period in which he was possessed by the Spectre that Parallax is the one thing that the Spirit of Retribution fears most, Hal allows himself to be possessed by the fear entity once more in order to stop him.[9] After finding out that Nekron was after the entity of White Light, he discovers that the entity originated on Earth, not Oa as the Guardians said. Hal realizes that the entity needs a host, similar to Parallax and Ion. As Hal attempts to leave Parallax, Sinestro tells him it's his destiny to be the host and not Hal.

After Nekron separates Sinestro from the Entity, Hal bonds with and uses its power to transform the resurrected heroes into White Lanterns dubbing them the "White Lantern Corps" they defeat Nekron, by reviving Black Hand, Nekron's link to the living plane. The Entity then revives the Anti-Monitor in order to free him from Nekron's Black Power Battery. Nekron sends The Anti-Monitor back to Qward. Nekron is destroyed by white power rings. The Entity resurrects many fallen heroes and villains before it leaves. Later, Hal and Barry discuss the events of Blackest Night and where the Entity could have gone.

Hal and Carol Ferris are later seen flying in jets. Sinestro then interrupts, causing Hal's plane to explode. Hal and Carol transform into their Lantern costumes and Sinestro tells Hal that he's found a White Lantern in a crater on Earth. Hal infers that Sinestro couldn't lift the Lantern, to which Sinestro says it wants Hal. They arrive at the crater and Hal and Carol try lifting the Lantern. They both fail, as Sinestro had, and liken the fallen Lantern to King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone. Carol tries once more, but then the Green and Yellow Lanterns try with her. This causes The White Lantern to speak, saying "HELP ME LIVE." This seems to send a jolt of pain and power through all those resurrected on Blackest Night and the three Lantern Corps members around the Lantern. Hal then falls to the ground and when he rises, he sees revolting visions of undead forms of the resurrected. The Lantern tells Hal, Carol and Sinestro to find the Entity before Krona does. Hal is summoned next to Atrocitus, but they are attacked by Lobo, who is attempting to collect a bounty on the head of Atrocitus. Together Hal and the New Guardians, "scare" him off, and Atrocitus joins them in their search for the entities. After this, Hal seeks out Larfleeze, but they are attacked by Hector Hammond, who had swallowed Larfleeze's Lantern and transformed into Ophidian, the orange entity of avarice. Hector says he'll go after Carol, and Hal and Larfleeze go to Las Vegas and encounter Carol fighting Predator, the violent entity of love. Carol says the Predator is corrupted by the host and kisses his host, Abraham Pointe, to free him from the entity (Hal watches the kiss with jealousy). Hal, Carol, Larfleeze, Abraham, and the Predator are transported to Zamaron by the Zamarons. Carol tries to convince them, that Predator is not dangerous and he doesn't have to be imprisoned in the Star Sapphire Central Power Battery. Queen Aga'po agrees with her, sacrificing herself to the Central Battery, and nominates Carol the new Star Sapphire Queen. Carol decides to stay on Zamaron. Hal and Larfleeze return to Earth because Saint Walker says that Adara, the blue entity of hope, had found a host. They go to Montana. Later, Flash shows up and tells Hal that the Justice League wants to speak to Hal. Hal and Flash are interrupted by the Indigo Tribe. Adara senses no hope in the Indigo Tribe. Saint Walker speculates that it is because their rings control their emotions. Krona shows up with Parallax and possesses Flash. Hal and Parallax start to fight, and Hal taunts Parallax to possess his body again. Krona arrives and prevents Parallax from possessing Hal, saying that Hal would resist his influence. Krona starts to collect the Entity. Hal, the New Guardians, and the Indigo Tribe fight Krona, who proves to be too powerful for them. Hal wakes up, surrounded by Batman, Superman and Flash. Hal asks what happened. Batman says, "You lost". Superman asks when the last time was that Hal took off the ring. Hal is approached by the New Guardians, who tell him that Krona has disappeared into the Lost Sector, but that Larfleeze's ring is able to track Hector Hammond. As Hal prepares to join the New Guardians in their search, Batman, Superman, and Flash offer to help, but Hal declines. The New Guardians go to Ryut looking for Krona, but find the Book of the Black, Sinestro rolls a page and the book starts to show the truth of Massacre of Sector 666
The Book of the Black starts to absorb the New Guardians, and Lyssa Drak shows up and makes it even harder for them to get free.

Sinestro helps Hal gets free but then the book disappears, leaving only the rings of the New Guardians behind. Then Salakk, with a squad of Green Lanterns, appears and they try to arrest Hal. Krona then infects the Central Power Battery of Oa, using Parallax to make the Green Lanterns lose control. Hal flees and asks for backup by any other Lanterns who are not infected.

Guy Gardner gets in communication and they meet in the "Green House". They both talk about their recent alliances, however, they both lose control and start a fight, draining their power rings. Hal and Guy regain their self-control, but now they have no idea how to save the Green Lantern Corps.

Hal and Guy leave the Green House and use a spaceship, the Interceptor, to go to Oa. They are able to reach Oa, but a group of brainwashed Green Lanterns attacks them. Hal and Guy escape and meet with John and Kyle, who have also removed their rings to prevent Parallax from controlling them. They all agree that removing Parallax from the Central Power Battery is the only way to save the Corps. They also decide to use different rings, Hal taking the Sinestro Corps ring, Kyle taking the Blue Lantern ring, Guy taking the Red Lantern ring and John taking the Indigo Tribe ring.

With their new rings, they find Ganthet, but they are attacked by Mogo. The Lanterns are able to escape underground and find the Foundry, the place where all rings and batteries are forged. They find Shedd, a servant of the Corps, who gives Guy the Power Gauntlet originally made by Krona. Kyle and John separate from Hal and Guy in order to save Mogo. Hal and Guy go to the Central Power Battery but they are attacked by the emotional entities, who are using the Guardians as hosts. After Hal, Guy, and Ganthet free themselves, the three reunite with Kyle Rayner and John Stewart, who has just destroyed Mogo. After that, Hal takes an extra ring, the orange one, and Guy takes the violet one to use the full power of the emotional spectrum to crack open the Battery and release Parallax. Their job done, the Lanterns regain their original green rings, in preparation for the final confrontation with Krona.

While the Green Lanterns fight Krona and the entity-possessed Guardians, Hal takes Kyle to the Book of the Black and makes him draw a picture of Carol, Sinestro, Atrocitus, Larfleeze, and Saint Walker and Indigo-1 (whose ring states her real name to be Iroque). This frees them from the Book, but their rings reject them and choose Krona as their wielders. Empowered by their rings, Krona attacks Hal.

However, Sinestro attacks Krona. Before Krona can attack Sinestro, a Green Lantern ring chooses Sinestro as its wielder. Hal and Sinestro manage to overpower Krona, and Hal finally kills him, releasing the entities from the Guardians. With Krona dead, the rings from the other corps return to their former wielders. The Guardians, however, expel them from Oa. Also, due to his recent 'rebellion' against them by working with the other Ring-bearers, coupled with his recent murder of a Guardian, they now believe Hal to be the most dangerous Green Lantern. Despite Ganthet's attempt to defend him, Hal is discharged from the Corps, and the Guardians take his ring and send him back to Earth. Hal appears on a desert highway, saying it shouldn't end like this.

DCnU
The DC Universe heavily changed its continuity into the DCnU following the events of Flashpoint in 2011. This was part of an effort to make storylines more accessible to newer readers, beginning with the New 52. This new timeline combines elements from the DCU, Vertigo Universe and Wildstorm Universe while drastically changing the origins and histories of characters.

After the events were seen in Flashpoint, the DC Universe changed significantly. Hal Jordan's past and present remained mostly unchanged, as his current status regarding the Green Lantern Corps.

After being banished to Earth, Hal returned home, resigned. In his Coast City apartment, Jordan is hounded by his landlord for overdue rent. As he looks out the window, Hal notices a woman in the building across the street being threatened. He jumps out his seventh story window, crashes through the window of the woman's apartment, and subdues her attacker. Only then does he look up to see the room filled with a camera crew and realize that the woman and her attacker are actors. Sometime later, Carol Ferris arrives to bail Hal out of jail. She tells him it's time to move on with his life and offers Hal a job at Ferris Air. Thinking it over, Hal asks Carol out on a date. Later that night, Hal and Carol are dining in a fancy restaurant. Hal tells Carol he will accept her offer for a job and then says he has something else to ask her: he needs her to co-sign a car lease for him. Carol throws her drink in his face and stomps off. Hal chases after and tries to apologize, not realizing Carol was expecting a proposal. Thoroughly mad, Carol drives off leaving Hal stranded in a growing rainstorm. Soaking wet, Hal finally arrives home only to find an eviction notice attached to his apartment door. The night is not over, however, as Sinestro is waiting and offers Hal a chance to regain his ring.

Despite Sinestro's offer, Hal attacks him but Sinestro easily subdues him. Sinestro says that Hal's life has been very difficult lately without his ring. Then, Sinestro creates a ring and places it on Hal. Powered by the ring, Hal frees himself from the chains and blasts Sinestro with an energy beam. However, the beam does not affect Sinestro. Confused, Hal asks what's wrong with the ring and Sinestro replies that there is nothing wrong with it. Since the ring was created by Sinestro, he alone can control it. To prove his point to Hal, Sinestro powers down his ring and Hal falls to a rooftop. As he reactivates the ring, Sinestro proclaims that Hal is his servant. Then, Hal hears emergency sirens and flies to see the problem, much to Sinestro's annoyance. Hal and Sinestro watch as a bridge is about to collapse. Hal saves a woman, but Sinestro deactivates his ring and the woman falls to the water. Then, Sinestro fixes the entire bridge and saves all the victims, including the woman. As Sinestro reactivates Hal's ring, Gorgor, a member of the Sinestro Corps and the one behind the bridge's collapse, attacks them. Sinestro fights Gorgor, proclaiming that all the members of his Corps gave into their sadistic urges instead of obeying the code of conduct he created. Then, he kills Gorgor with a sword construct. Sinestro tells Hal that the Sinestro Corps have enslaved Korugar and he will help him destroy them.

Sinestro explains to Hal that he needs him to liberate Korugar from the Sinestro Corps. If the other Green Lanterns get involved, there will be a massacre. Hal decides to go with Sinestro, but not before saying goodbye to Carol. However, Sinestro won't let him, as the fate of Korugar is more urgent. Hal angrily punches Sinestro in the face, saying that Sinestro is not better than him. Sinestro simply laughs, saying that he is better than Hal, and he already knows that. Then, Sinestro flies off to Korugar, followed by a reluctant Hal.

Hal and Sinestro arrive at Korugar, and Sinestro reveals his plan: they must stay hidden until sunset and Sinestro will fight the Corpsmen while Hal goes to the Yellow Central Battery and deactivates it, as it can only be deactivated by a Green Lantern. Hal expresses confusion at Sinestro's decision of using a Green Lantern as a failsafe for the Yellow Battery but nevertheless goes along with the plan. Sinestro changes his uniform's color to black, surprising Hal, as he didn't know the ring could do that.

As they hide in Korugar's ruins while waiting for the sunset, Hal and Sinestro watch as the Corpsmen enslave the Korugarans and bring them to cells. Just as a Corpsman is about to kill a young Korugarian, another Korugarian named Arsona attacks him. Sinestro is surprised, as he knows Arsona. However, the Corpsman restrains her and prepares to kill her, and Sinestro decides to attack.

Hal, knowing that Sinestro is drawing their attention, goes to the Yellow Central Battery, where he is attacked by another Corpsman. Hal quickly kills him and enters the Battery, but the Battery blasts him, much to Sinestro's shock.

As Hal is blasted by the Yellow Power Battery, he sees his relationship with Carol with another perspective. However, the Battery discovers that Hal is not Sinestro and stops blasting him with energy. The Battery was not trying to disintegrate him; instead, it was trying to teleport him to the Antimatter Universe. As Hal loses consciousness, the Sinestro Corpsmen put him in a cell.

As Hal comes to, he tries to get out of the cell; however, the cell has been designed to withstand green energy. As his ring's energy levels approach 0%, Hal uses the last of his ring's power to create a construct of Carol.

The Corpsmen put Sinestro in a cell alongside Hal's. Sinestro's cell is also filled with Korugarian prisoners. Hal listens to Sinestro talk with Arsona, who is personally upset by Sinestro's betrayal against Korugar. To get out of the cells, Hal suggests to Sinestro to create rings for the Korugarians, just like he created a ring for him. With power rings, the Korugarans could fight back against the Corpsmen. Sinestro is not sure about this plan, saying that the rings would only last ten minutes before disappearing, but Hal tells him to try. Exerting himself, Sinestro manages to create rings for the Korugarans. However, the Korugarians, led by a vengeful Arsona, decide to use their new power to attack Sinestro instead.

Hal asks Arsona and the Korugarians not to use their rings to attack Sinestro, as their rings will not last long. Sinestro also says that the rings the Korugarians wield cannot be used against Sinestro, because he created them. To escape their cells, Sinestro remotely controls his Power Battery, causing an explosion that destroys the cells, allowing Sinestro, Hal and the Korugarians to escape and fight back.

Sinestro lends his Battery to Hal so that he can recharge his ring. As the Korugarians fight the Corpsmen, Sinestro and Hal return to the Yellow Central Power Battery to deactivate it. Hal asks Sinestro why did he fail the first time he tried to deactivate the Battery, Sinestro answers that the Battery thought Hal was Sinestro because he was carrying his Battery and wearing a ring he created. Sinestro tells Hal that they must use his Green Battery to extinguish the Yellow Battery's light, activating the Yellow Battery's survival mode, in which the Battery begins retracting energy from the Corpsmen's rings, causing the Corpsmen to fall into a coma. The plan works and the Corpsmen are incapacitated before they can inflict any serious harm on the Korugarians.

Although Korugar is saved, the Korugarians have mixed feelings towards Sinestro. Arsona, still angry at him, says that the Korugarians will always consider him their enemy. Hal and Sinestro take the Sinestro Corpsmen as prisoners and leave Korugar.

Flying through space with the Battery and the Corpsmen under custody, Hal and Sinestro talk about recent events. Sinestro believes that Guardians are insidious and becoming a greater danger to the universe than he ever was, but Hal still denounces Sinestro's actions. Declaring their pact over, Sinestro de-charges Hal's ring, saying he can keep it, but he never stated he would provide a way to recharge when he made the deal in the first place. Then, Sinestro sends Hal back to Earth.

Returning to Earth, Hal resolves to find another way to recharge his ring, until he remembers Carol. Hal goes to Ferris Aircraft and meets Carol with a kiss, telling her about what happened in Korugar. He apologizes for everything they have gone through tells her that he wants her to be the last thing he sees before he dies and promises to improve their relationship. She accepts Hal's apology and the two restart their relationship.

Hal resumes his life on Earth with Carol's help. During a date in the Coast City Aeronautical Museum, Hal defends a mechanic from some coworkers that attacked him because he caught them stealing plane parts. After the date, Hal tells Carol that he doesn't need to be Green Lantern.

The next morning, Hal and Carol wake up after spending the night together. Suddenly, Hal's ring attaches itself to his finger and Sinestro appears before them, saying that Hal is still of use to him.

Hal refuses to obey Sinestro's commands again, until Sinestro threatens Carol, causing Hal to attack him. As Hal and Sinestro fight, Sinestro holds the advantage, as Hal's ring cannot hurt Sinestro, who effortlessly incapacitates Hal and tells him about the Guardians' plans to replace the Green Lantern Corps.

Suddenly, Indigo-1 and a group of Indigo Lanterns appear before Hal and Sinestro. Indigo-1 declares the Indigo Tribe's intentions to deal with Sinestro, saying that the Guardians' decision to allow Sinestro keep his Green Lantern ring was a mistake. Then, the Indigo Lanterns take Sinestro and teleport away, with Hal following them to the Indigo Tribe homeworld. The Indigo Lanterns knock Hal out and put him in a cell.

As Hal awakens, he finds his ring discharged. Another prisoner begs Hal to free him, but an indigo energy blast knocks him out. Then, Black Hand appears before Hal. Hal asks Black Hand what does the Indigo Tribe want with Sinestro, and Black Hand replies that they are all saved. He says that Sinestro is no longer a worry and he will be reborn, just like he was.

Black Hand tells Hal that the Indigo Tribe will make Sinestro one of their own. He also shows Hal his ability to cycle through the emotional spectrum. Hal tricks him into channeling willpower and manages to recharge his ring. As Hal escapes from his cell, more Indigo Tribesmen come after him. He tries to elude them but realizes he cannot fly. The ring tells him that the energy Hal absorbed from Black Hand is simulated energy and the ring's power remains limited. Hal asks if he can still create constructs, and the ring replies that they are available but unreliable. Hal creates a zip line and a motorcycle to escape from the Indigo Tribesmen.

Riding across the dungeon, Hal encounters a massive statue of Abin Sur. Touching a panel in the statue, Hal activates a series of holograms that say that Abin Sur is the creator and savior of the Indigo Tribe. He saved them all, beginning with his greatest enemy: Indigo-1. Suddenly, Hal is ambushed by the Indigo Tribe and Sinestro, who has been converted into an Indigo Lantern.

As the Indigo Lanterns surround Hal, Sinestro expresses regret at everything he has done to Hal, but Hal doesn't buy it, knowing that Sinestro was brainwashed. Hal asks Indigo-1 why are Indigo Lanterns attacking him, reminding her of the alliance between the Green Lantern Corps and the Indigo Tribe. Indigo-1 replies that the alliance still stands, and the Indigo Tribesmen will return him to Earth, but Sinestro will stay on the Indigo homeworld. Hal refuses to leave without Sinestro, so he escapes into the Forbidden Jungles, hoping to find the Indigo Central Battery.

Hal travels through the jungle and finds a mysterious being, who recognizes him as a Green Lantern. The being identifies himself as Natromo, and Hal recognizes his name from the Indigo Tribe oath. Natromo says that he didn't want his name to be used on the Indigo oath. He also says that "Nok", translated to human languages, means "compassion be with you", and is the name of the Indigo homeworld. Hal sees that Natromo is not wearing an Indigo ring, and asks him if he created the Indigo Tribe. Natromo replies that he created the Indigo Tribe along with another Green Lantern: Abin Sur.

Leading Hal to the Indigo Central Battery, Natromo explains to him the origins of the Indigo Tribe. It was he and Abin Sur who created the Indigo Power Rings so that he could create an army to fight in the Blackest Night. The Indigo Tribe was also meant to fight the Guardians because Abin had seen the future and discovered they would become corrupted. Natromo is preparing to attack the Guardians when Abin returns, but Hal says that Abin is dead.

Shocked, Natromo states that without Abin, they have no chance at defeating the Guardians. Saddened by Abin's death, Natromo detonates the Indigo Central Battery. In that moment, the Indigo Lanterns arrive, but the Battery's destruction deactivates their rings. Although Sinestro is freed from the ring's influence, the former Indigo Lanterns are released too.

Hal and Sinestro run into the jungle, and Hal explains that the Indigo Tribesmen are in fact brainwashed criminals, but their Battery is dead and they have reverted to their former selves. Sinestro tries to fight, but Hal gets him into a jeep construct. Sinestro says that he doesn't need Hal's help, but Hal asks if Sinestro doesn't need him, why did he give him a ring in the first place. He was willing to get his life back on track, but because of the Guardians' plan, he will have to get involved in Green Lantern affairs again. Sinestro replies that Hal is a Green Lantern, and that is his life.

Suddenly, they stumble upon Natromo, and Hal imprisons him in a cage. Natromo pleads to be released so that he can say goodbye to his family, but Hal asks him to repair the Indigo Battery. Sinestro threatens Natromo by aiming a stake at his neck, but Hal convinces him that fear will not solve the problem. Sinestro decides to hold the Indigo Tribesmen off, while Hal and Natromo try to repair the Battery.

As Hal and Natromo get to the Battery, Natromo asks Hal how did he know Abin Sur. Hal replies that Abin was his predecessor in the Green Lantern Corps, he gave him his ring and responsibilities; and if that includes uniting the Indigo Tribe against the Guardians, then he will accept that responsibility as well. Hal inspires Natromo to believe in himself as much as he believed in Abin.

Natromo tries to repair the Battery, but he cannot reassemble the pieces without a single spark of compassion. Suddenly, Iroque enters the Battery chamber, begging them to repair the Battery. Hal and Natromo realize that even without her ring, Iroque is capable of feeling compassion. Using Iroque's compassion, Natromo successfully repairs the Battery, restoring the Indigo Tribe, including Sinestro.

Hal asks Natromo to let Sinestro go, but Natromo cannot do that; only the Indigo Tribe can release him. Indigo-1 agrees to let Sinestro go, but only if Hal helps him find redemption even without an indigo ring. Indigo-1 asks Hal if he believes Sinestro can be a hero again, and Hal replies that he wants to believe that.

As the Indigo Tribe releases Sinestro, Natromo inverts the link between Hal's and Sinestro's rings. Now, Hal can control Sinestro's ring instead of the other way around. Unfortunately, Black Hand has escaped the Indigo Tribe's control. Indigo-1 teleports the two Lanterns to Korugar, where Sinestro has hidden the Book of the Black. As they read the Book to find out more about the Guardians' plans to replace the Green Lantern Corps, they are teleported right to Black Hand's old home.

After a lengthy fight with Black Hand's forces, Hal and Sinestro pass out after running out of power in their rings. Black Hand buries Sinestro and Hal alive. Hal breaks free and fights against Black Hand, and is saved by Sinestro. The two of them fight Black Hand until the Guardians arrive, who command Black Hand to kill them. Black Hand opens a massive black vortex that sucks Hal and Sinestro within, but not before Hal and Sinestro fuse their rings together with an unknown message. However, they are later revealed to have survived, but they are trapped in the mysterious Dead Zone. As they venture through the Dead Zone, Hal and Sinestro find a mysterious cloaked figure. The cloaked stranger reveals himself to be Tomar-Re, who asks Hal and Sinestro to stop Volthoom, the First Lantern, from destroying reality.

During a fight with Black Hand, Simon Baz (the new bearer of Hal's ring) enters the Dead Zone and meets Hal and Sinestro. Simon attempts to get Hal and Sinestro out of the Dead Zone, but the ring can only take one of them. Sinestro claims the ring and escapes the Dead Zone by forcing Hal to experience a moment of fear when he threatens Hal with the loss of Carol. Hal contemplates committing suicide so he could harness Black Hand's ring, as it is the only way to leave the Dead Zone. Later, Hal and Tomar-Re witness the arrival of the Korugarians at the Dead Zone, realizing that Volthoom destroyed Korugar. Running out of options, Hal finally jumps off a cliff.

Acknowledging Hal's death, the black ring accepts him as its new wielder. Hal then contacts the Indigo Tribe, who open a portal between the realm of the living and the Dead Zone. Escaping from the Dead Zone, Hal unleashes a horde of the undead against Volthoom, but Volthoom easily destroys the army and nearly possesses Hal. After Sinestro, who has become Parallax's newest host, fails to kill Volthoom, Hal goes to the Dead Zone and unleashes Nekron, who finally kills Volthoom. After the battle ends, Hal lets go of the black ring and becomes a Green Lantern once again, sealing Nekron back into the Dead Zone. As Hal reunites with Carol, however, Sinestro reactivates his Sinestro Corps and goes to kill the Guardians for everything they have done. Hal attempts to stop him, but is too late and Sinestro has already killed the Guardians (except Ganthet and Sayd, whom he secretly keeps alive with the help of Larfleeze, to be exiled from Oa together forever, and one Guardian to end up being killed by Atrocitus, to settle his feud with them). Then, Hal asks Sinestro if they ever were really friends. Sinestro departs from Oa, saying that their greatest tragedy is that they will always be friends.

HISTORY:
John Stewart was an architect who was selected by the Guardians of the Universe as Hal Jordan's backup after Guy Gardner was seriously injured in a disaster. Although, Jordan objected after seeing that Stewart had a belligerent attitude to authority figures, the Guardians stood by their selection. Jordan complied and recruited and equipped Stewart with the standard uniform and power ring.

To Jordan, Stewart's first mission began badly with the assignment of protecting a racist politician and Stewart took advantage of averting an accident to embarrass him in the process. However, Stewart soon proved his worth when an apparent African American assassin shot at the politician, but Stewart refused to intervene with Jordan to move in response to the attack. However, Stewart had good reasons for this apparent dereliction of duty when he stopped a gunman from killing a police officer in the outside parking lot at the event while Jordan was pursuing a decoy. When Jordan confronted Stewart for his actions, Stewart effectively explained the situation of the ruse and the fact the politician staged it for political advantage. With that adventure, Jordan concluded that Stewart was an excellent recruit after all.

For some time, Stewart occasionally filled in for him as Green Lantern when Jordan was unavailable, including some missions of the Justice League. After Jordan gave up being Green Lantern, the Guardians selected Stewart to full time duty. Stewart filled that role for some years, during which time he married Katma Tui, the Green Lantern of the planet Korugar. After Tui’s murder, Stewart became the administrator of the “Mosaic World,” a patchwork of communities from multiple planets that had been brought to Oa by an insane Guardian. From this position, Stewart eventually ascended to Guardianhood, which he later relinquished. After a brief period of paraplegia, he became Green Lantern once again and became a member of the JLA. Stewart was also a member of the Darkstars for some time. He regained his power ring during Kyle Rayner's tenure as Earth's main Green Lantern, and remained his backup for years, until Hal Jordan was resurrected after his spirit was freed from Parallax and the Spectre, after which Jordan took over Rayner's role as Rayner went to serve an administrative position in the Green Lantern Corps in Oa.

In the subsequent restructuring of the Corps, each sector now has two Green Lanterns assigned to it, and Stewart and Jordan now share the responsibilities for Earth's sector 2814. After the dissolution of the Justice League in the aftermath of the Infinite Crisis event, and the destruction of their Moon Watchtower headquarters, Stewart has begun playing a larger role in metahuman affairs, working with many former Justice Leaguers.

John was on Oa with fellow Earth Green Lanterns Hal, Guy, and Kyle to discuss the new threat of the new Sinestro Corps with the Guardians. Kyle was abducted by a yellow power ring and the Sinestro Corps storms Oa in a surprise attack, killing thousands of Green Lanterns.Bedovian, a sniper of the Sinestro Corps, had been taking out several Green Lanterns three sectors away, and John uses his ring to create a scoped sniper to find Bedovian and then shoots him, taking out the sniper. Because Green Lanterns power rings are not allowed to kill John most likely injured Bedovian. When John, Hal, and Guy attempt to recharge their rings using the Central Power Battery, they set of a booby trap set by the Sinestro Corps and were transported to Qward. Parallax, who had infected Kyle forced John to relive the moment where he failed to save Xanshi. He and Guy were freed by Hal and the Lost Lanterns. While Ion was recovered by the Lost Lanterns the Earth Lanterns returned home to get back up only to discover that the Sinestro Corps were about to attack Earth.

John went to Coast City to help Hal battle Parallax, but found that Parallax had absorbed Hal as well. He held off Parallax long enough for Guy to return with a painting that Kyle's mother painted, and used it to snap Kyle out of Parallax's control. The painting and Hal's words restore Kyle's will and he breaks free from the fear entity. Ganthet and Sayd appeared to imprison Parallax into Hal, Guy, John, and Kyle's four separate batteries. After Ganthet and Sayd warned the Earth Lanterns about the Blackest Night, John and Guy went to New York to help Earth's heroes and the Green Lantern Corps to battle the Sinestro Corps. He and Guy came up with the idea to use Warworld as an grenade, which badly injured the Anti-Monitor, who was then thrown into space by the traitorous Superman Prime.

John took Guy to Soranik Natu in hopes that she could stop the Sinestro Corps sentient virus Despotellis. Soranik used the Green Lantern smallpox virus Leezle Pon, who stopped Despotellis. After the war John hung out with fellow Earth Lanterns at Hal's family's apartment in Coast City.

John was asked by the Guardian to join a new division within the Corps: the Alpha Lanterns, but John refused. John was later one of the Green Lanterns chosen to escort Sinestro to Korugar, however the escort team was ambushed by the Sinestro Corps and the newly formed Red Lantern Corps. The Green Lanterns were left to die in space after Atrocitus captures Sinestro. They are saved by Saint Walker, a member of the Blue Lantern Corps. John was infected with the rage of the red power rings and attacked Saint Walker. Walker uses his blue ring to create a construct of Katma Tui, who heals John and calmed him down by showing him a vision of himself flying with Katma. He told Kilowog that he would see Katma again and that the universe told him so.

John stopped the Guardians from attacking Hal with green energy, in an attempt to destroy a blue power ring that was attached to Hal. He witnessed Larfleeze making demands to the Guardians. John is one of the Green Lanterns who accompany the Guardians to battle Larfleeze. While battling the Orange Lanterns John is saved by Fatality. Fatality tells John let go of his grief over Xanshi's destruction and then leaves. After the battle with Agent Orange have a discussion about their hopes.

John was part of the team that removed the coffins of the fallen heroes from Valhalla Cemetery and took them to the Hall of Justice as a security measure against an unknown threat that might use the corpses of people for evil purposes.

John goes to Coast City with Hal, Guy, and Kyle on the anniversy on Superman's death which has been declared a national holiday for fallen heroes. The four Earth Green Lanterns attend a parade in honor of those killed in Mongul I's attack. John leaves to visit Xanshi after the parade ends. When John visits the grave of planet Xanshi, thousands of black rings fly into the planetary debris, and reconstitute the entire planet. Xanshi itself then speaks to John, telling him "I can help you save them." Against his better judgment, John descends to the planet's surface. Once reaching the surface, John finds himself confronted by Katma Tui and the entire population of Xanshi as Black Lanterns. While battling them all, Katma tries to weaken John by claiming that he caused the planet's destruction. However, John, spurred on by Fatality's words, says that he was not the cause of it all and successfully fights off the Black Lanterns. After escaping Xanshi's atmosphere, John realises that the planet is headed for Earth, along with every Black Lantern in the universe, and contacts Hal, warning him of the impending threat.

John is almost overwhelmed by Black Lanterns, but is saved by seven corps united against Nekron. John leads a team made up of Kilowog, Fatality, and other members of the seven Corps to destroy the reanimated Xanshi. John finally makes peace with losing his wife Katma and failing to save Xanshi; he and the other lanterns destroy the core of the planet which was made up of thousands of black power rings. With Xanshi destroyed Nekron and Blackhand feel an intense pain just as Sinestro is revived by the Entity.

John is seen in Oa, supervising the demolition of the buildings left in ruins after the Black Lanterns attack, and planing the reconstruction. He is called suddenly to the Guardians' chamber, where they order him to join Alpha Lantern Boodikka in a mission to robot planet Grenda, Stel's homeworld, where the communications ceased abruptly without explanation, and Lantern Stel and the population are missing. John agrees and departs with Boodikka.

After arriving in the planet, the two confirmed the Guardians report: the entire population mysteriously disappeared. John asks Boodikka if something of her older self remains despite been turned into a Alpha Lantern, after she asks him why he refused to join the Alpha Lanterns. Boodikka responds that her changes are only physical, and she still have her former personality, John doubts about this affirmation. The two discover what seems to be a Green Lantern House Sector, that, accorded to Boodikka, its not registered. After entered inside, they discovered Green Lanterns Horoq Nnot and Stel, the last one tells John he must flee from the planet immediately. Suddenly, Boodikka turns against John and attacks him; despite John fights back, he was surrounded by more rogue Alpha Lanterns and is defeated. Its reveled that the Alpha Lanterns have begun a revolt against the rest of the corps, allied themselves with Hank Henshaw, the Cyborg Superman, and take control of Grenda to use the planet as their hidden base to turn Green Lanterns into Alpha Lanterns. John Stewart is last seen wounded and bleeding, been taken to Henshaw by Boodikka. The Cyborg Superman then begins the cosmic surgery to turn John into another Alpha Lantern.

Before starting the operation, however, Henshaw connects Stewart's brain to his memories in order to see why he was turned into a cyborg. He also reveals to John, that, after being resurrected by the Manhunters after the Sinestro Corps War, he returned to Earth in the middle of the Blackest Night, and pled to the Black Lanterns (among them are the former crew of his space shuttle) and Nekron to kill him, only to discover that because he did not have a physical heart, he was invisible to them. Angered for being ignored by death itself, the Cyborg Superman encountered the mysterious hooded stranger who abducted the entities of the Emotional Spectrum. He convinced him that Ganthet has the power and knowledge to turn Alpha Lanterns into normal beings again. John realizes that Henshaw organized the revolt of the Alpha Lanterns with the sole purpose to attract Ganthet to the planet Grenda and forced him to turn Henshaw into a mortal being again. Kyle and Soranik burst into the lab and manage to rescue John, but Ganthet is captured. They hide in a cave, where John informs them about the Cyborg Superman's true plan. They also discover the missing robot inhabitants of the planet, trapped in the depths of the cave by Henshaw. Mounting a defense, they battle against Henshaw and his forces, destroying the cyborg's body. Henshaw leaps into Boodikka's body, but her consciousness manages to defeat his, seemingly destroying him. John later joins Kyle Rayner and Ganthet in a mission to the anti-matter universe, in order to save Soranik Natu.

On their return to the matter universe, John and the others are affected by the return of Parallax to the Central Power Battery by Krona. Their previous experience with Parallax allows John, Kyle and Ganthet to escape its control, but they are forced to fight their fellow Green Lanterns. Affected by Parallax's fear powers, John and Kyle are forced to remove their rings and escape through Oa's underground. They then meet up with Guy and Hal, who has the rings of the other corps' leaders. John initially chooses Larfleeze's orange ring, but is convinced by Hal to use Indigo-1's ring instead due to the debilitating effects of the orange ring on the wearer's psyche. When the corrupted Green Lanterns attack, John has difficulty channeling the various corps powers through his ring. Things are made worse when Mogo joins the attack. While Hal and Guy go to remove Parallax from the Central Power Battery, John and Kyle attempt to free Mogo from Krona's control. On the way, John attempts to stop the flow of tainted rings sent by Mogo, but fails. As he and Kyle head for Mogo's core instead, they discover residual Black Lantern energy around it. John absorbs the Black Lantern energy, along with all the Green Lantern energy, and regretfully uses it to destroy Mogo. In the fallout, the two regroup with Hal, Guy and Ganthet, using the full power of the emotional spectrum to crack open the Battery and release Parallax. Their job done, the Lanterns regain their original green rings, in preparation for the final confrontation with Krona.

Following the War's conclusion, John assists a new Green Lantern from Sector 282 "selected" during the period when Mogo was under Krona's control in adjusting to the power of her ring despite the possibility that she will not be allowed to keep it by assisting her in halting a war taking place in her sector, the original Lantern for that sector having died during the war. When John is able to help the two sides find a peaceful resolution to their conflict, his new student reflects that, despite John's reputation after destroying two worlds, she now knows that nobody could regret that action more than John himself.

HISTORY:
Guy Gardner was born in Baltimore, Maryland to parents Roland and Peggy Gardner. His father was an abusive alcoholic, and frequently beat the young Guy while idolizing his older brother Mace. Mace eventually became a cop. After years of taking beatings and trying to impress his parents, Guy finally gave up. If he could not be as good as his brother, he decided to do the opposite. Guy turned into a juvenile delinquent, frequently getting into trouble and breaking the law. An outlaw and a criminal, he was constantly going in and out of juvenile hall.

After his 18th birthday, his brother finally straightened him out. When Guy stole a car, rather than let him go to city jail, Mace beat the tar out of him, told him to stop making people ashamed of him, get some real clothes and a decent job. He loaned Guy some money, and told him it was the last time anybody else was going to look out for him. Guy started working hard in school again, got a job and paid his way through college. He took his aggression out playing undergraduate football at the University of Michigan. Later, his brother Mace was revealed to be a dirty cop after drug dealers shot him and left him paraplegic. Rather than continue living, Mace committed suicide by drowning himself in a river. Guy Gardner went on to graduate a Liberal Arts Major from college, with degrees in both psychology and education. For a time he worked counseling prisoners, before settling into a more permanent job as a gym teacher for children in special education. Eventually, when Guy's father was dying of liver failure, the two would make peace and spend a week together before the old man passed away.

When the previous Green Lantern of Sector 2814, an alien named Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth, he had to choose someone to replace him shortly before he died. The two most worthy men on the planet to pass his ring on to were Guy Gardner, and Hal Jordan. Hal was chosen because at the time he was closer to the crash-site, becoming the first Green Lantern of Earth almost purely by chance.

Should anything ever happen to Hal, or should he be unable to fulfill his duties, Guy Gardner would be Earth's Green Lantern. After finding this out, Hal journeyed to Baltimore and joined the Men's Club where Guy practiced physical fitness... the two quickly became fast friends, although Jordan could not reveal his secret.

Unfortunately, Guy was put out of commission when he was hit by a bus, and the Guardians instead found a new backup for Hal in architect John Stewart. Stewart went on a number of missions while Gardner was in the hospital. While he was still crippled, Guy Gardner would meet his longtime love-interest Kari Limbo, a gypsy woman with limited precognitive abilities. She told him that he had a great destiny ahead of him, and that one very fateful day of prime importance to him and all the world, he would be the last of a great tradition. After Hal Jordan's ring was damaged by the Crumbler, Guy Gardner had his chance to become a Lantern at last. While Hal traveled to Oa to have it fixed, Guy worked in tandem with Green Arrow to take down the dangerous Professor Ojo. However, when Hal's power battery exploded in his face, he disappeared from the earthly realm and was believed to be dead. Hal Jordan consoled Kari Limbo for Guy's death, and the two slowly began to build an attraction to each other. Finally, after a near-death experience, Hal Jordan proposed to Kari. On the day of their wedding, it was discovered that Guy Gardner had actually been transported to the Phantom Zone. Brainwashed by the Zoners, he teamed up with General Zod against Green Lantern and Superman. Hal was barely able to leave the Zone alive with an unconscious Superman, and returning to Earth, he found Kari would no longer marry him if Guy Gardner was still alive. When Hal went back into the Zone to rescue Guy, he found Sinestro had kidnapped him and taken him to the Antimatter Universe of Qward. After doing battle with his arch-nemesis, Hal finally brought Gardner back. However, he was in a comatose vegetative state that he would not come out of for several years.

Both Hal Jordan and Booster Gold have been shown visions of the path history would have taken if Guy had indeed been chosen as the first Green Lantern, as he has so often wished. Inevitably, he would have died of a yellow plague while on a mission to the planet Ghera. The Guardians have revealed to Hal that even if he had been chosen second, Jordan would still be the Green Lantern of Earth fairly quickly. However, this is later elaborated upon. As Guy is an instrumental figure in the War of Light, his early death would cause a butterfly effect condemning most of the universe. The Sinestro Corps would have won the Sinestro Corps War, and gone on to conquer every planet they see... leading to a world where Sinestro rules all. This is averted by Booster Gold and Rip Hunter, in one of their time-traveling missions.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Guy finally stirred from his coma. Possibly brain damaged, he wished to take back the power ring and the title that should rightfully have been his. At the time, Hal Jordan had decided to retire, and John Stewart was the active Green Lantern of Earth. Gardner and Jordan fought over Abin Sur's grave, in a dramatic confrontation as Guy believed Hal was deliberately responsible for his problems. Although the Guardians of the Universe required an additional Green Lantern for the time of Crisis, Hal was invalid for the job as he had quit. Guy Gardner finally got what he wanted... he was a Green Lantern at last.

For the first time in history, the Guardians were divided. Half of them believed that they should act to preserve life, while the others argued that the Crisis was inevitable and time should not be wasted fighting it. Matters were further complicated when a third of them were killed by the Anti-Monitor. Guy was given a mission by one faction of the Guardians to destroy the moon of Qward where the Anti-Monitor had been born.

To do this, he had to assemble a strike team of supervillains and invade the Antimatter Universe. Hal Jordan was even deputized to aid him. Guy picked up the Shark, Sonar, Goldface, Throttle, Blindside and Hector Hammond. After Gardner had already gone through, the other Guardians discovered that destroying the moon of Qward would undo the Anti-Monitor's tether to the mortal universe, and make him much more powerful. Although acting on orders, Guy had to be stopped at all costs. All Lanterns available were sent to the Antimatter Universe, and there was a cataclysmic battle for the fate of the universe between the Green Lantern Corps, Guy and his villains, and the deadly Weaponers of Qward. Finally, before he could destroy it, John Stewart put Guy down with his ring, and the universe was saved from destruction for a second time that day. In addition to the two others, Hal Jordan was also reinstated in his official capacity.

In the aftermath, Gardner briefly went missing. Still bearing a grudge against Hal, and believing himself meant to be the last true Green Lantern, he teamed up with Star Sapphire and Hector Hammond. Although defeated, disgraced, and wanted dead at this point by nearly half the galaxy for his actions during the Crisis, they still saw potential in Gardner, and kept him on as a Lantern. The Guardians took a brief leave from the universe along with their female counterparts the Zamarons, and Guy was assigned to be mentored by the remaining mortal Guardian... Appa Ali Apsa, on Maltus.

During Legends, Guy Gardner finally returned to Earth. He declared himself leader of the Green Lantern Corps of Earth, and did battle with the seven other Lanterns stationed there for supremacy, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kilowog, Katma Tui, Arisia, Salakk and Ch'p. He was subdued by Honor Guards Apros and K'ryssma, intending to remove him from the Corps permanently under Appa's strict orders. However, after a plea from Kari Limbo convinced the other Lanterns to vouch for Guy, Appa was persuaded to allow him to continue his career, in the hopes that he would one day reach the full potential he had been selected for. On Apokolips, Darkseid sent his agent Glorious Godfrey to Earth intending to sway peoples' minds against the superheroes, leading to violent anti-vigilante rioting and protests which Guy nearly became a victim of. As resident Green Lantern, he was selected by Doctor Fate to be part of a final team to fight against Godfrey's mobs in Washington, D.C. despite a presidential edict banning superhero activities. Fighting against the Apokoliptian Warhounds, they eventually managed to break Godfrey's control over the populace. Although most of the other heroes immediately forgave those who had fought against them, Gardner insisted that the mind control could not have taken root if there was not an already deep-seated distrust for their kind. The heroes present that day decided to band together as a new team to fight for justice. As the previous Justice League had recently been disbanded, they would go on to form a new incarnation, Justice League International.

Before making his decision, he interacted with his fellow Lanterns again during Green Lantern Corps: Red Lantern. Kilowog was brainwashed by a Russian spy into joining the Soviet Union, where he helped Mikhail Gorbachev create the Rocket Red Brigade. Guy Gardner personally made it his mission to invade Russia and take care of the problem, despite the danger of causing an international incident. Kari Limbo attempted to dissuade him, but in his brain-damaged state he did not feel the same love for her he once had. He single-handedly took on both the misguided Kilowog and all seven Rocket Reds, in the process rescuing prisoners-of-war John Stewart and Katma Tui. However, once Kilowog saw the light of oppression, he realized the error of his ways and was forced to fight his close personal friend Rocket Red #1 to the death. Although the ideology of the West had arguably triumphed once more that day, the Lanterns all agreed that what they really learned was that war is hell.

Guy's run in JLI was full of constant personality shifts and endless arguing between team members. This led to a fight with Lobo, the sucker-punching of Blue Beetle during a boxing match, and finally him quitting the team after being "belittled" by Superman. Gardner was romantically involved with his fellow Leaguer Ice, even learning some rudimentary Norwegian. Their relationship ended with her death at the hands of the Overmaster, but recent events have led to her resurrection.

Guy Gardner became a founding member of the new Justice League along with Batman, Martian Manhunter, Doctor Fate, Captain Marvel, Blue Beetle, Mister Miracle, Black Canary and Doctor Light. Although Guy made repeated attempts to gain authority of the group, Batman rebuked him at every turn. These challenges culminated in a fist-fight between the two, famously ending in a one-punch knockout by the Dark Knight putting Gardner to sleep for several hours. Hal Jordan was shown to be staunchly against Guy's membership in the League, but chairman Maxwell Lord chose not to heed his warnings. After waking up from Batman's punch, Guy is shown to have a mild split-personality disorder induced by head trauma. He switches back and forth between his normal aggressive self and a much kinder, sweeter and gentler persona whenever he receives a serious blow to the skull.

Earlier missions for the League involving international relations with the Soviet Union would reveal Guy as politically right-wing, and a vocal advocate of the policies of Ronald Reagan.

After Hal Jordan returned to Earth from a lengthy stay in outer space, he attempted to persuade Guy to allow him to have his sector back. An overly confident Guy refused to listen to reason, and instead insisted that they make the decision in a single no-holds-barred fight in the streets of New York, without their rings. Gardner lost to Jordan in a punch-out, and was forced to give up his ring and quit the Corps. He would go out in search of a new weapon.

Guy refused to believe he could never be a hero again, and was not deterred by losing his powers. Instead, he went through a number of efforts to reinvent himself. He tried to clean up all of the crime surrounding Times Square using nothing but his fists and his machismo. After getting beaten up by Black Hand and his crew, he realized he would need a new gimmick. At first, he visited the New Guardians, although he was kicked off their island by Gloss for flirting with her. He then tried to become a gun-toting anti-hero with an overly large amount of guns, but gave that up when malfunctioning weaponry forced him to flee from a fight with Goldface.

Visibly irritated, he also turned down an offer to be General Glory's new sidekick. Finally, he recalled that the Weaponers of Qward were famous for crafting Sinestro's power ring. Using the help of G'nort to make him a ship, he journeyed into space and teamed up with Lobo. Together, the two bruisers went to the Antimatter Universe of Qward on Lobo's Spacehog and beat up a planet full of Qwardians before learning that Sinestro's ring was actually still on Oa... traveling back, they realized that they had inadvertently lead the Weaponers directly to the Guardians for a gigantic invasion. During the massive battle that ensued, the Green Lantern Corps were almost decimated by the invaders. Guy found the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps, and had a battle of wills with the Soul of Sinestro for control of his Qwardian Power Ring. After wrestling it from his hands, Gardner single-handedly put down the attackers and drove them back to Qward with arguably the most powerful weapon in the universe. Although they were glad that their home planet was safe, the Guardians of the Universe remained extremely worried about what they had unleashed upon the universe by allowing Guy to wield so much energy.

Unlike a Green Lantern Ring, a Qwardian Power Ring is more powerful because it has no weaknesses. The yellow ring did not use a battery to recharge, but actually needed to be used against Green Lanterns to restore power. Gardner found this out by accident when a member of the GLC fought him while he had absolutely no power. As the yellow ring of Sinestro spoke Sinestro's native language, Gardner was entirely unable to communicate with the ring, although it seemed to understand him to a degree. It would later be revealed during the War of Light that the yellow rings are operated not by willpower, but by their bearer's ability to instill great fear. For Guy Gardner to be able to use it so well is... well, it is actually really not all that surprising.

Back on Earth, Guy started a whole new chapter of his life. He relaunched his campaign to clean up New York City, and quickly became recognized as the most dangerous hero around purely for his collateral damage. Although his actions were widely panned by many including the news media and his peers, he developed a large degree of newfound popularity from citizens who believed his ruthless determination in crime-fighting was much needed.

A group of aliens who were attempting to start their own intergalactic police-for-hire to rival groups like the Green Lanterns, Darkstars and L.E.G.I.O.N. asked Guy Gardner to be their champion and top enforcer. He agreed to work for them, on the condition that they refer to themselves as the "Gardners of the Universe," and also that they wear his haircut. This gave him an income, and he was able to move out of his small apartment with General Glory and even hire himself a publicity agent. He had everything he wanted in addition to his hero career, power, wealth, and respect.

Working on his own now, he first went after Goldface to tie up their past feuds. Although Hal Jordan and Tom Kalmaku were also working the case at the time, Guy insisted that he would be the one to beat Goldface first, baiting the Green Lantern into a competition. Using a combination of his brains, brawns, and fighting skills, Guy actually took Goldface down before Jordan could, even after his ring had been stolen, proving he could show Hal up on his own terms.

It was while he had the yellow power ring that Doomsday first appeared. Gardner was with the Justice League at the time. and when Doomsday caused Blue Beetle's craft to crash, Gardner did not wait for the rest of the team. He charged straight in, and was quickly overwhelmed by Doomsday, who pummeled him badly before tearing through the rest of the team. Guy, his face beaten so badly he could barely see, continued in the fight, but was put down again. Guy was forced to sit the rest of the battle out, taken off in an ambulance, but insisting that Superman put Doomsday down. Superman and the monster finally killed each other in single combat.

Guy, although never close friends with the Man of Steel, mourned his death along with the rest of the League. He gathered for Superman's funeral in Metropolis and walked in the honor guard along with the League. Shortly thereafter, while in Chicago, Guy became aware of four super powered beings all claiming to be Superman returned from the dead. Infuriated at what he regarded as pretenders disrespecting the memory of Superman, Guy decided to take action. He went to Metropolis and encountered "The Last Son of Krypton" (later revealed to be the Eradicator) and challenged him to a fight. Impressed with the shaded Superman's prowess and with the brutality he exhibited in defeating some common thugs, Guy was willing to endorse him as the real Man of Steel. When the Cyborg Superman framed the Eradicator for the destruction of Coast City, Guy was the one member of the League who refused to believe the charge. Nevertheless, he went along with the League when they were lured away from Earth in a ruse by the Cyborg.

He rallied together with many other heroes to fight the Parasites during Bloodlines, but was captured by their leader the Taker along with everybody else. After being rescued by the New Bloods, he would help toss the gigantic monster directly into the sun, ensuring that it could no longer harm anyone else again.

After a visit back home to Baltimore, and finding out for the first time that his father was dead before he could confront the old man about his years of abuse, Guy determined to reinvent himself once again, give himself a new look, and let the world know that he was back. Wearing an updated leather jacket, gloves, boots and a logo on his chest, he became Guy Gardner: Warrior.

After Coast City was destroyed by Mongul and Cyborg Superman during Reign of the Supermen, Hal Jordan, the greatest Green Lantern, turned insane. Determining that the Guardians of the Universe were unfit leaders after they blocked his attempts to recreate his home, he went on a rampage destroying the entire Green Lantern Corps.

Traveling to Oa, Hal murdered the Guardians, Kilowog, Sinestro, destroyed the Central Power Battery and left the rest of the Corps for dead. He began calling himself Parallax.

With the few remaining energies, Guardian Ganthet chose Kyle Rayner to become the last Green Lantern. Guy has claimed that he was offered the position first, but turned it down.

Because of the actions of Parallax, Guy's ring experienced a massive power surge and burnt out, leaving him without a method of recharging it. Realizing it was unreliable, he asked Blue Beetle to help him, and began reluctantly wearing one of Booster Gold's prototype exo-skeletons based on Kilowog's design for the Rocket Red Armor. Alan Scott informed him of the disaster that had taken place on Oa.[66] Deciding to lead a hand-picked squadron to ground zero, Guy took Alan Scott, Captain Atom, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, the Ray, Arisia and Ferrin Colos. They met and quickly found themselves outmatched by the strength of Parallax. After a final battle between Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan, Guy was defeated, and his ring destroyed by Hal's augmented powers. Depowered again, he was calmly sent back to Earth unconscious.

On a search for powers once again, he journeyed deep into the heart of Africa pursuing his superheroics. A legendary river was said to possess the powers of history's greatest fighters, which it would imbue to those who had the true heart of a warrior. Guy joined the party of Buck Wargo on his quest. Braving Nazis, Zombies and Dinosaurs he finally sipped the "water of the warriors" and found great powers unlocked within him. Surrounding paintings seemed to depict him as some sort of great prophecized local hero of myth. Shortly afterward, he was nearly crushed by a gigantic boulder and seemingly killed. He immediately came back from the experience covered in strange red armor that had been activated by the trauma.

Now that he had powers again Guy was able to answer the call when the universe was destroyed by a "crisis in time". Parallax had achieved nigh omnipotence and was using his powers to destroy the timestream with the intention of remaking a world that would be perfect in his own eyes. Superman rallied the heroes of the world in Metropolis to prevent the collapse of reality as they knew it, and stop the cosmic terror Extant.

Guy offered to lead the group but was immediately turned down. This was also his first meeting with Kyle Rayner. He saw the potential in the Crisis to undo the atrocities Hal had committed and bring the Corps back. Requiring additional firepower, he was shocked to find that the new armor his body was covered in could also generate weapons based on his thought commands. Flung through time along with Steel, Batgirl and Supergirl, he went on an odyssey through history before returning to the present. Through the years, they met Anthro, the Rough Bunch, Space Ranger and the Blackhawk Squadron. Another trip took him to one of his earlier dates with Kari Limbo, although having an identical self in the same time period made his armor go haywire. He was also taken to the day Coast City was destroyed, and watched the love of his life Kari die before his very eyes. Fissures widened, and Guy was one of the handful of heroes in the last pocket of reality when Parallax actually revealed himself. Clearly the most vocal against Jordan's attempted reformation of the universe, Guy was tempted by promises of a better world, but ultimately refused the idea that something good could come of cosmic genocide. Green Arrow shot Parallax and ended his campaign, then the entire universe was naturally rebooted at the Big Bang by the Spectre. Taken back to the regular world by Waverider, he discovered in the battle his armor had been lost and was replaced with strange skin patterns that seemed to manifest the same abilities.

The rest of Justice League International fought Cadre during the events of Judgment Day, and Ice was tragically murdered by Overmaster. As they were on break at the time, Guy would not find out until significantly after it had happened.

Gardner discovered that his past was not what he thought it was. He was actually the descendant of a space-traveling race called the Vuldarians. This discovery eventually led him to discover new powers within himself. These powers allowed him to resume his role as a superhero. He also established a superhero theme bar called Warriors, as both a source of income and a base between his adventures.

His early days as Warrior saw him struggling with his newfound powers. He had difficulty changing his body to any kind of weapon, and these transformations sometimes caused him pain. After a breakdown that led to a confrontation with Superman and Supergirl, with some soul-searching help from his ancestor, Gardner finally came into his own, able to use his new powers and was able to form just about any tactical non-energy based weapon from his body, from guns to bombs, as well as absorb some forms of energy and redirect them through his various "weapons". Another ability, the knowledge of warriors from across space and time, was rarely used.

It was during this time that Gardner fought against Dementor, a "brother" of sorts, in that he was also a product of Vuldarian breeding. (Dementor's father raped a woman who carried the Vuldarian seed, and Dementor was born.) Dementor was sent to Hell, but eventually revealed that he was the one responsible for Gardner's constant personality shifts. He finally dealt with his "family", as well as revealed another side of his Vuldarian powers, the ability to heal mortal wounds, such as regenerating a heart.

He was seemingly killed during Imperiex's attack on Earth in Our Worlds at War. However he was later discovered to be trapped in a pocket of Hell known as The Gorge in General Zod's country of Pokolistan and became the villainous demonic lord of the Gorge while plotting for a way to be released. Gardner eventually lured Superman and Krypto into the Gorge and tried to force them to release him from his station by having Superman take his place. Turns out the plan was a ruse to trick his minion known as Kancer to take the role as lord of the Gorge, freeing himself and Superman from the demonic realm while trapping Kancer in Hell forever. After freeing himself from this, his Warrior powers were seemingly boosted. He declared it was his job to do things heroes like Superman could not.

After his old colleague Elongated Man's wife Sue Dibny was murdered by a mysterious assailant in Identity Crisis, Guy attended her funeral along with most of the rest of the superhero community. All present were required to wear their costumes, and Guy wore his old Green Lantern garb from his days in the League.

Finally, Hal Jordan came back to life and brought the rest of the Green Lanterns with him in a climactic battle involving the Parallax entity and the Spectre force. In a strange attack at Warriors, all of his Vuldarian powers and DNA were overwritten when he was possessed by Parallax. Jordan's ring duplicated itself to provide him with one, and in an explosion at the Justice League Watchtower, Guy finally became a Green Lantern once again.

He shook off the influence of Parallax when he was able to recognize and acknowledge fear. While the newly reformed and resurrected Jordan was dealing with problems from Batman, Guy delightedly witnessed Hal catch Bats off guard with a right hook. Parallax possessed the last remaining Guardian, Ganthet, and Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner and Kilowog did battle with the monstrosity. In a fantastic display of ring-work, the five Lanterns won the day and restored energies to the Central Power Battery of Oa, reigniting the flames of the Corps. Although their relationship had previously been antagonistic, Guy is now regularly friends with his fellow Lanterns, albeit still in his own gruff style.

A new era has begun, and the Green Lantern Corps goes back into action, and starts recruiting new members. This time, with a total of 7200 Lanterns at all times, two for each space sector. Having finally proven himself as one of the best, Guy, along with Kilowog and Kyle Rayner, is selected to act as an instructor to the thousands of rookies now pouring in. One of the only veteran Lanterns present at this crucial point in Corps history, Guy was also responsible for a number of urgent missions at the time. As the universe was being torn apart by the Rann-Thanagar War at the time, they were sent to Mogo to prevent an invasion from the opposing forces.

The Spider Guild captured new recruit Soranik Natu, and took her prisoner in the Vega System, off-limits to Lanterns. Despite a centuries old pact with the Psions of Vega, Guy and Kyle rescued her from her imprisonment. And were immediately ambushed by bounty hunters Bolphunga and Fatality, out for the prices on their heads. The fight lead directly to the Guild Nest, where they had to fight both the hunters and armies of gigantic alien spiders. Along with Isamot Kol and Vath Sarn, the six Lanterns escaped from Vega and made it back into their own territory. They realized that the Guild was involved in a complicated plot to compress stars into black holes and steal for power, with designs on Oa for its next invasion. Code Zero. This culminated in a full-scale Spider Guild assault that required every single available Lantern to fight. Most of the rookies still could not overcome the yellow impurity in their rings, and had difficulty targeting the primarily golden warships. Hal Jordan and John Stewart even showed up for the battle. Rallying their forces together, Guy Gardner took control of the entire Corps, delivered a speech at the Central Power Battery to unite their tactics, and led them to triumphant victory underneath his strategies. Working as one gigantic team, and concentrating all of their willpower in unison, they turned their plot back on the Spiders and obliterated the hive mind with the very explosion they had intended to use on the Guardians. Afterward, Guy received both great praise and great demerits. The Guardians noted that beneath his brutish exterior lied exceptional qualities that warranted their special attention, and he was promoted to "Lantern Number One" of the Corps Honor Guard, not restricted to any sector. However, on the other hand, for breaking as many rules as he had, and committing what was effectively a mutiny to usurp command, he was in need of some reprimand. Guy Gardner's new position was effective immediately, but he was also denied shore leave for a full year as punishment. The Corps was back, and stronger than it ever had been before.

Around the second great Crisis, Guy was a present force throughout. His old friend Blue Beetle was murdered by Maxwell Lord during Lord's brutal takeover of Checkmate. Teaming up with other former Leaguers, Guy helped investigate the murder during the OMAC Project. Alongside Booster Gold, Fire, Metamorpho and Mary Marvel he fought the OMACs attempting to destroy all superheroes. Another of his old friends Rocket Red was murdered by the robots.

He also took place in a last stand with numerous other heroes trying to face down as many OMACs as they could. At last, while they were battling, Sasha Bordeaux managed to shut the project down. Former nemesis Despero was captured during the Crisis of Conscience, and Guy got to poke a stick at him through a cage, much to the galactic conqueror's chagrin.[96] In the company of G'nort, who was trying to organize Rann-Thanagar peace talks after his planet had been destroyed in their conflict, Guy met his old enemies the Tormocks once again. They were taking advantage of the Crisis to completely wipe out the Vuldarians, but Guy intervened, and single-handedly saved the dying race from extinction. Next, he was working in the Polaris Galaxy at the climax of the Rann-Thanagar War as a widening rift into the Multiverse opened up at the new center of the universe.[99] After the Battle of Metropolis, when Superboy-Prime intended to fly through Oa at light speed and recreate the Big Bang, Guy led the Green Lantern Corps' stand against him. Although a total of thirty-two Lanterns were killed in action by the rampaging Kryptonian, they slowed him down long enough for Superman to catch up to him and stop him. Superboy-Prime was imprisoned in the middle of a Red Sun Eater obtained through Donna Troy, and fifty Lanterns were posted guard around him at all times. Guy Gardner was asked to give the main speech at the ceremony for the fallen afterward.

Throughout the next year, he made several appearances on Earth although he was largely confined to space missions. He made it to the speech Superman was supposed to give after the Crisis to the rest of the hero community. Guy managed to return to his home planet in time for Christmas that year as well. He also helped save lives during the rain of the supermen, when the people of Lex Luthor's Everyman Project simultaneously lost their powers during flight and came crashing down to the streets below. After Black Adam went on a rampage and started World War III, Guy was one of the large number of heroes who attempted to put him down.

Surprisingly, although he met with prejudice from nearly all other Lanterns, Hal found forgiveness in Guy for his actions as Parallax before anyone else. Guy even helped Hal in a fist-fight that broke out with Turytt and Horoq Nnot in the cafeteria over his past actions, which earned him further disciplinary infractions. Given a chance at redemption when he discovered Tomar-Tu was still alive, Hal asked the Guardians' permission to go on a retrieval mission for the Lost Lanterns he had cast into space.

Because they were in forbidden territory, he was denied his request, but Hal and Guy decided to go anyway during "Revenge of the Green Lanterns". Their search took them to the Manhunters' homeworld of Biot, where they realized that the man who had been holding their friends prisoner was Cyborg Superman.[106] Hal freed the Lanterns he was responsible for, Ke'Haan, Boodikka, General Kreon, Laira, Graf Toren, Hannu, and Jack T. Chance. Arisia and Chaselon were also discovered. Guy had been knocked out by the Cyborg, and subject to nanites which bonded him with one of the great Manhunter robots.

The Lost Lanterns broke him out with a great deal of effort, and Graf Toren rescued him. Guy organized a full evacuation with all of the dozens of captured Lanterns on the planet, got everyone clear, and then Hal and Arisia exploded the planet just as the group escaped. Covering for Jordan, Guy told the Guardians that as an Honor Guard he had authorized the mission himself. Lanterns of his authority are allowed to break the rules three times before expulsion. As his punishment, Salakk assigned him to Prime-Duty, one month of monitoring the Red Sun Eater imprisoning Superboy-Prime.

After his year of punishment was over, Guy Gardner was ready for some long-awaited shore leave. The last mission he had to perform was aiding Soranik Natu on Betrassus, helping fight the treacherous Prince Ragnar. This led to the induction of Princess Iolande into the Corps. Finally, he was allowed some vacation time on the Restoria planet in Sector 3241. Bolphunga the Unrelenting, who had apparently been tracking him for some time, took pleasure in interrupting his stay. Having left his ring in the hotel safe which he was unable to access, Guy had to fight and evade the bounty hunter using only his wits and his reflexes. He finally got it back by using his old college football skills to intercept it in the air while Bolphunga was about to take it, effectively getting the drop on him.[110] As rested as he could expect to be, Guy's next mission was to fight against Ranx the Sentient City and the Children of the White Lobe teaming up with Chthos-Chthas Chthatis.

Mogo was infected by the virus Despotellis. Usually in charge of providing therapy and relaxation for Lanterns on shore leave, the planetoid began brainwashing them to his own purposes. Kilowog and Green Man were both briefly driven insane and attacked their comrades. Lanterns Quond and Tanakata Z were found murdered shortly after implicating Guy Gardner as their killer. Talking with Mogo afterward about the false accusations, instead of the normal therapeutic imagery, he was confronted by a construct of his abusive father. Gardner was the first to resist the mind control and warn the others of Mogo's instability. Since Isamot Kol noticed earlier that something strange was happening on Mogo, he allows Guy to speak, and Guy decides to summon Soranik Natu to examine Mogo. Guy then fought together with Natu, Vath Sarn, Isamot, and Bzzd, and faced Despotellis even as he possessed Kilowog, and excised him from their friends. Mogo destroyed the entire infected area on his surface by colliding with an asteroid. Although their enemy had been defeated, and the Corps was safe once again, the virus heralded the coming of the Sinestro Corps shortly before being driven out.

For a short time, Guy was sent to work with "The Corpse", the top secret Black Ops division of the Green Lanterns, unknown to the general public. Run by a Durlan named Von Daggle, it was kept so quiet that in all of his years as a Lantern Guy had never even heard of it before. Along with another recruit, R'amey Holl, they attempted to prevent the Dominators from wielding one of the universe's greatest weapons. This division has no official ties to the Corps, receive no backup or help, work completely undercover, have no ethical standards in their practices, and die alone if they were caught. Daggle attempted to stop one of the Dominion who had gained god-like powers through super science. Guy was supposed to assassinate a Khund telepath, but had difficulty reconciling himself to murder. The beast took advantage of this, and nearly killed him. He would be nursed back to health by the spiritual powers of R'amey Holl, who appeared to be in love with him. The god-like Dominator traveled to Earth, where he intended to avenge his ancestors. Together, the three beat him into submission, and R'amey executed him on the spot. Guy was denied membership by Daggle, and told he had failed their tests because he was weak. Gardner said he would have refused anyway because killing criminals is the easy way out, and he was proud of himself for not living up to their standards. Gardner's memory is wiped to forget the incident, and he returns to his regular duties with no memories of the things he had seen.

During the Sinestro Corps War, the Sinestro Corps launched an invasion against Oa and decimated the Lanterns stationed there. Parallax took possession of Kyle Rayner, and brought him back to their base on Qward. Both Guy and John Stewart were captured in battle by Parallax as well. Lyssa Drak held them both prisoner deep underground and subjected them to their worst fears. They are freed by Hal Jordan and the Lost Lanterns, then blast their way out of the planet facing Sinestros left and right.

Guy attacks Parallax, who nearly breaks his neck, but escapes unscathed. Disturbed by the ruthlessness of their enemies, the Guardians change the Book of Oa to allow lethal force to be used against all Sinestro Corps members.[119] As their ultimate move, Sinestro launches a full-scale assault from the new Warworld onto Earth, the center of the Multiverse. Green Lantern Corps, Justice League of America, and Justice Society of America are all present for the battle in New York City along with hundreds of others. Guy helps exorcise Parallax from Kyle, and the evil entity is divided into four parts and contained within the four human's power batteries. They say their oaths, and split up into teams. At the climax of the epic confrontation in Manhattan, Guy fell suddenly violently ill. While everyone else was searching for a way to destroy the rampaging Anti-Monitor, Guy had the idea of dropping Warworld on him like a gigantic bomb after detonating its core. This destroyed the Anti-Monitor's containment suit, and Superman-Prime finished him off. Cyborg Superman was also killed in the blast, and expressed gratitude for the ending of his life. Near collapse and hacking up yellow all over the place, Guy was examined by Soranik Natu who determined he was under the influence of sentient bio-virus Despotellis. Meanwhile, Sinestro was beaten in a fist fight against Hal Jordan, and Superman-Prime was banished from the universe in an explosive blast of light by one of the dying Guardians. In a battle on a microscopic scale, Green Lantern Leezle Pon, a sentient smallpox virus battled against Despotellis in Guy's bloodstream, finally winning out and saving his life. Sinestro leadership defeated and the enemy Corps decimated, the Green Lanterns won the war and took back the universe from the grip of terror. A number of them stayed behind to clean up damage and rebuild the major cities that had been destroyed. Although he was prepared to use lethal force if absolutely necessary, Guy avoided giving into his baser instincts for the duration of the conflict. Now that Kyle Rayner was no longer Ion, he was assigned an Honor Guard position as well and became Guy's new partner. Shortly afterward the pair paid their respects to the dead at the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps together.

Ice, the former love of Guy Gardner's life, was resurrected after years of being deceased during an affair between the Birds of Prey and the Secret Six.[124] In the aftermath of the Sinestro Corps War, the two ex-lovers met once again in Times Square and shared a single long and passionate kiss. Although Guy was ready and willing to resume their relationship, Ice still needed time. Being dead for so long, she still needed to get her life back in order, and was not ready for a serious committed relationship. Backing off to give her space, Guy arranged a proper date between them for exactly one month later in the same spot. He also insisted that he would be there for her whenever she needed him.

Kyle and Guy both got tired of their home-life on Earth, and decided to move to Oa to better suit their responsibilities as Honor Guards. Rebuilding his old destroyed bar, Guy sets up a new Warriors restaurant for Lanterns to get solid food someplace other than the cafeteria. Salakk requires some convincing, but after a number of derogatory remarks directed at them muses that their entertainment value alone will be worth it. Before leaving Earth, Guy leaves a note on Ice's bedside table explaining his disappearance.

As his first regular mission following the War, Guy and a number of other Lanterns were sent to catch the rogue Sinestro Rings and stop them before they could create any more havoc throughout the universe. Arisia and Sodam Yat are taken prisoner and subjected to Black Mercy plants by Mongul and Duel Eknham. The Honor Guards invaded Mongul's planet along with Stel, Bzzd, Soranik Natu, Princess Iolande, Isamot Kol and Vath Sarn. Nobody was lost in the rescue mission, but they still had to deal with the mother of all Black Mercies trying to protect her children. After a lengthy fight, they realized that the creature Mother Mercy was actually against Mongul's usage of her plants to instill fear, and had only been protecting herself. Mongul then ambushed the entire group with his mutated Mercies. Left alone with Eknham guarding them, Gardner saw an opportunity and blew the Sinestro's head off with a ring blast, marking his first usage of deadly force as a Lantern. All of the group tracked down and assaulted Mongul on his way to conquer another planet, and he was defeated by the sacrifice of Bzzd. Mother Mercy was inducted into the Lantern Corps to replace him, and the group flew back to Oa with a tiny coffin for their fallen comrade.

Amidst great success, the new Warriors Bar finally opened up, serving only authentic American cuisine. While Guy had previously had a problem with the way Lantern chef Greet served up Earth meals, the food was very popular when served correctly. Soon after, eyeballs began raining from the skies... taken from murdered members of rookie Lanterns' families, killed by the Sinestro Corps. While Guy was being sent out to investigate, Ice arrived on the planet days earlier, having hitched a ride with a fellow Lantern to meet up with him. Unfortunately, Guy had to go out and find the killer, but Ice said she would be there waiting for him when he returned. Guy, Kyle, Kilowog and Saarek tracked down the Quintet, a group of brother and sister Sinestros who they imprisoned in Sciencells. Guy and Ice finally share their date together. He asks her to move in with him, and she declines, because she cannot live in outer space. The two argue about their feelings for each other, and although they both care immensely, there are simply too many complications. Both of them agree that their current situations will make a relationship impossible, although in the future they both wish to continue things should they not be tied down by as many responsibilities. Guy has fellow Lantern Symon Terrynce escort Tora back to Earth. As an Honor Guard, Guy is requested to accompany the Guardians of the Universe along with Arisia and Sodam Yat on a diplomatic mission to the Star Sapphire Corps on Zamaron during "Sins of the Star Sapphire". Queen Aga'po and the Scarred Guardian argued about the value of love as an emotion, and Guy barely held the two back from instigating physical conflict. Although they left safely from the planet, the Book of Oa would be rewritten that night to forbid physical relationships and love between Green Lanterns. Fresh off of his breakup, this only serves to make Guy bitter.

At the beginning of the Final Crisis, Orion of the New Gods was found murdered in a dumpster. Martian Manhunter was also killed by Libra. Guy attended Martian Manhunter's funeral.[136] Alpha Lantern Kraken, at the time possessed by Granny Goodness, framed Hal Jordan for the murder of a God and the attempted murder of his partner. He was taken off of active duty during the investigation. At the trial, Guy uncovered Goodness for the fraud she was and she assaulted the Guardians within their own citadel, attempting to take the powers of the Central Power Battery for the glory of Darkseid. Discovering that Earth was at the center of a doomsday singularity which could wipe out all existence thanks to Darkseid's machinations, Hal, Guy and Kyle all traveled back home with twenty-four hours to save the universe. They faced reality warps and time distortions. After Darkseid had been killed by Batman, they arrived for the ultimate confrontation between Mandrakk the Dark Monitor and Superman's combined forces of the Multiverse. Along with his fellow Lanterns, Guy helped drive a stake made of pure damn willpower through the Dark Monitor's heart, killing him once and for all.

Sinestro was sentenced to death during "Rage of the Red Lanterns". Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lantern Corps, sent his minions out to ambush the convoy and take Sinestro for themselves. After this confrontation, Guy helped bring in one of the Red Lantern Corps most powerful members, Vice. He was still on Oa during the great Sciencell riot. At the time, the Guardians were on a mission to Vega and the Orange Lantern Corps with Hal Jordan. The riot included a breakout unleashing every captured member of the Sinestro Corps, as well as any of hundreds of the Corps' greatest enemies who had been imprisoned.

During the gigantic battle, Gardner actually briefly teamed up with his old enemy Bolphunga against the Sinestros, although he made it clear he still hated Guy. They finally recaptured their enemies with the help of the Alpha Lantern Corps. And then the Central Power Battery exploded. Guardian Scar, having switched allegiances to a new master, destroyed it from within to take down Oa's defensive shielding and make it more vulnerable to attack. The Lanterns regrouped, and started cleaning up the mess. Salaak brought Guy and Kyle's attention to the actions of the Alpha Lanterns, and they realized that they were executing unarmed prisoners. Alexander Nero was slaughtered right before their eyes. The two Honor Guards made a stand against Chaselon, Green Man and Varix, Gardner particularly outraged at the disregard for the right to life, and the extent to which they were allowing the ideals of the Corps to slip. At first debating heatedly, and then putting themselves in the way of the blasts. Unable to convince the recently returning Guardians that their decrees were getting out of hand, they were forced to settle for only saving those who they had promised would be spared for helping them, Bolphunga and Kanjar Ro. The executions were brought onto the surface of Oa for all to see, proving that the Guardians wished no secrecy. For going against the decree, Guy and Kyle are demoted from their positions and stationed back on Earth until they can control their emotions.

Now stationed back on Earth, Guy is able to be present for the Tribute Day ceremonies in Coast City honoring fallen heroes across the world. Back on his home planet, Guy is also able to continue pursuing his relationship with Ice, although they are forced to remain a long distance relationship for the most part.

He believes most of the Guardians' newest laws to be foolish and meaningless, but continues to wear his ring despite his lack of faith in them so that he can do the most good and help the most people. On a trip back to Sector 0, him and Kyle are hit by a wave of Black Lantern Rings that wash over them flying through space. As Scar betrays and incapacitates the Guardians, the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps are pillaged by the new rings, and the Black Lantern Corps rises. Able to pick out whichever emotion is most heavily present in any life form at the time, they identified Guy Gardner's great and powerful rage.[148][149] It has been established that with the Guardians out of action, although Salakk is currently in charge, Guy and Kyle are next in the chain of command for control of the Corps. Tragically, Rayner sacrifices himself by plunging into the Central Power Battery so he can obliterate hundreds of Black Lanterns in a single blow. Before dying, he thanks Guy for being like a brother to him. This is too much to handle. He is completely overcome by his rage at the senseless horrors, and is inducted into the Red Lantern Corps. Equipped with a Red Power Ring in addition to his normal weaponry, he begins single-handedly decimating the remaining Black Lanterns in his fit of anger, like a ravenous mindless uncontrollable beast. Thanks to the intervention of Star Sapphire, refusing to allow the eternal love between Kyle and Soranik to extinguish, Kyle is resurrected by the violet light. However, the power of the red has too much control over him and even seeing his friend brought back cannot help him break from it. All of the Black Lanterns were destroyed by Mogo. In a brief moment of sanity, Guy asked for a mercy killing before he lost control again, because he could not stop the rage from overcoming him. Mogo manages to stop Guy, first by using his rings to produce an energy construct representation of his internal struggle, weakening him, and then by placing him in a pool of nutrients, containing leeches that purge almost all of Guy's rage contaminated blood from his body. Guy returns to normal, but is informed by the Indigo Tribesman Munk that only the light of a Blue Lantern can cure him completely. The group are then summoned to Earth to join the battle against Nekron. He briefly battles Ice who was transformed into a Black Lantern. Guy and the other seven Corps battle the Anti-Monitor in a attempt to destroy the Black Central Battery. During this battle, he is briefly possessed by Deadman, who clues Kyle Rayner into how to defeat Nekron: by reviving Black Hand (which eventually is done through the Entity's powers), his connection to the universe would be severed, since he served as Nekron's liaison.

After the events of Blackest Night, Guy Gardner is slated to star in a third Green Lantern monthly series titled Emerald Warriors. The series is written by Peter Tomasi and features regular guest appearances by Kilowog. Guy arrives on planet Odym for the cure from his Red Lantern's connection to the red ring. However, the Red Lantern Bleez prevents Guy from receiving the cure. Guy decides not to take the cure, reasoning that the dangerous mission he and the others are about to partake in may require such savage fury. While investigating a mysterious power drain with Kilowog and Arisia, Guy unwillingly brings up more blood, which transforms into Atrocitus' head, who reveals their alliance. Guy is forced to admit to his fellow Lanterns that he vomited more blood a short time ago that formed into a tapestry of future events, and that, having learned that Atrocitus had the same thing happen to him, he and Ganthet entered into their alliance. Guy is abandoned by Kilowog and Arisia, who are disgusted that Gardner kept that information from them. Guy and Bleez manage to find the source of the power drain in Zardor, a telepathic alien warlord. Guy is then attacked by an enthralled Sodam Yat. Guy is overwhelmed and fed to Zardor's pet snake. Finding Bleez before he is swallowed, he kisses her, using that act to activate the Red Lantern energy in him and break free. Together, they are able to disconnect Zardor's victims from his control. Bleez sends the victims home while Guy fights Zardor. Guy is almost killed, but is saved by Kilowog and Arisia's intervention. However, Zardor manages to escape with Sodam still under his control. Guy attempts to kill Sodam to keep him from hurting anyone, but is stopped by Arisia.

As the group return to Oa to brief the Guardians on the situations, they feel the effect of Parallax being returned to the Central Power Battery by Krona. Guy and Kilowog are able to resist (due to their past experience with Parallax), but Arisia is enthralled along with the other Green Lanterns, who attack Guy and Kilowog. Kilowog sends Guy away from the battle to get help, and Guy contacts Hal Jordan, telling him to meet at "The Green House", a secret base on an unknown planet. Once there, Parallax's influence causes them to fight each other, forcing them to remove their rings. Locating the Green House, they use a starship to take them to Oa, where they meet with Kyle Rayner and John Stewart. Hal, possessing the rings of the other Corps' leaders, offers them as alternative to the green ones. Guy chooses the red ring, citing his experience with it. With their new powers, they assist Ganthet against an onslaught of Green Lanterns, before being attacked by Mogo. After managing to escape the planet's attack, the group split up: While Kyle and John go to stop Mogo from sending tainted rings across the universe, Guy and Hal travel to the Central Power Battery to remove Parallax from the Battery. As they reach near their objective, Guy and Hal are attacked by the Guardians, who have been possessed by the other six Emotional Entities. Despite Guy's attempt to fight back by using Krona's gauntlet, he and Hal are defeated and brought to Krona, who intends to use bandages similar to his own to "evolve" the two into "New Guardians". The destruction of Mogo creates enough of distraction for Guy and Hal to escape, bringing Ganthet with them. The three rendevous with Kyle and John at the Central Power Battery. At Ganthet's urging, Guy dons a Star Sapphire Ring, and Hal wears Larfleeze's ring, and the combined might of the emotional spectrum shatters the shell of the Central Power Battery, releasing Parallax. Their mission accomplished, Guy has Kyle use his blue ring to cleanse him of the Red Lantern energy, and they all don their green rings in preparation for the final confrontation with Krona.

HISTORY:
Kyle Rayner is a high ranking member of the Green Lantern Corps from Earth. After the rest of the Corps was destroyed, he alone was selected to bear the last power ring and carry on the title. Although he acted alone for many years, when the Corps was reformed, his skill level gave him a position as an Honor Guard, only behind Salakk and the Guardians in the chain of command of the Corps. He has also been a host for the Ion entity, and a member of the Justice League.

Before he acquired a Green Lantern ring, Kyle Rayner was a strug-gling-but-gifted freelance graphic artist. He lived and worked in Los Angeles initially. After Hal Jordan, grief-stricken over the destruction of his hometown of Coast City, went on a mad rampage, killing the entire Green Lantern Corps and most of the Guardians of the Uni-verse who oversaw the Corps, Rayner was found by Ganthet, the last surviving Guardian, and given the last Green Lantern ring: the powerful weapon wielded by each Green Lantern, which allows them to conjure any form of matter or energy solely with their willpower. Ganthet's reasons for choosing Kyle to bear the ring have never been made completely apparent, aside from Rayner having been in the right place at the right time.

Kyle, unsure of what to think about having this new power, went to his ex-girlfriend's apartment, Alexan-dra DeWitt, showing her that he now was a Green Lantern. She decided to help him, and after his first adventure where everyone thought he was Hal Jordan, she recommended he redesign his costume to distinguish himself.

The new look did not stop Mongul from trying to destroy Rayner dur-ing his first week as a Green Lan-tern, however, when Mongul came looking for revenge against Green Lantern for his defeat in Engine City (see "Reign of the Super-men!"). Mongul decided any Green Lantern would do. With some help from Superman, one of his heroes, Kyle defeated Mongul. It took the alien warlord by surprise that Kyle's ring could work against his yellow skin. Superman was shocked when Kyle knew virtually nothing about Hal Jordan or the Green Lantern Corps.

Kyle and Alex got back together, and she helped Kyle train for his new role as a superhero. Tragical-ly, she was brutally murdered by the supervillain Major Force, who had been sent to learn the truth about the new Green Lantern, after a few shadowy government opera-tives recovered the final battery. Force made the mistake of show-ing the battery to Kyle during the fight, allowing GL to recharge his ring at a crucial moment. Kyle stopped just short of killing Major Force when the authorities arrived. Kyle was then approached by Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lan-tern, who told him a little about the history of the Green Lantern Corps. He also told him about Hal Jor-dan's madness and warned that they would all soon have to con-front Hal.

That day would come sooner than later, when Hal Jordan (now the villain Parallax) joined with Extant and used his awesome powers to try and reshape the universe itself. After a massive battle that nearly destroyed all of space and time, Hal was defeated by a coalition of heroes. In the battle, he disap-peared with Kyle. (see Zero Hour for more details). Kyle and Hal ended up on Oa, where Parallax attempted to absorb even more energy from the planet itself. Kyle was forced to detonate the planet to stop Hal's madness. Lost in space, Kyle met up with a former Green Lantern who stole his ring from him. However, she surren-dered it back when she learned it would not work for her; Kyle soon made his way back home. He de-cided to take up residence in New York City.

Back on Earth, Kyle briefly joined with another former Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, for a second shot at Major Force. This time, Kyle active-ly chose not to kill the villain, but Guy had no such hesitation (alt-hough Major Force turned up alive and well later). Parallax would soon return to Earth, demanding the last power ring, but Kyle soon proved that he was more than wor-thy to bear the name Green Lan-tern.

During a battle against Sonar, Kyle would meet The Flash (Wally West). Wally, having grown up with Hal and his uncle Barry Allen as Green Lantern and Flash, did not think very highly of the new GL at first. Their bickering almost al-lowed Sonar to overcome them. They managed to overcame their differences, however, and would go on to become good friends. He also meets Superboy while inves-tigating the ruins of the Silicon Dragon base beneath the Pacific. GL and Superboy encountered Black Manta, in his new monstrous form. Kyle admits to being a bit on edge when Superboy explains he brought Sam Makoa along, some-one without powers, as this prompted bad memories of Alex. All three are able to escape the lair (rescuing some kidnapped victims along the way) and Kyle relaxes with Superboy at The Compound before heading off.

Kyle soon began a relationship with Donna Troy. Donna, at the time, was working with the Dark-stars under a former Green Lan-tern John Stewart. She briefly broke up with him, as she was still in the aftermath of her divorce at the time, and headed off with John Stewart into space.

After Underworld Unleashed, Kyle began to question his abilities and what it truly meant to be a superhe-ro. This lead him to seek out other heroes for advice, including Bat-man, Sentinel, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman. Kyle learned a lot from them, and rededicated him-self to his new role.

Kyle barely was able to rest after this "hero quest" when Donna Troy returned to Earth and asked him to come with her to Rann, where John Stewart and what was left of the Darkstars were rallied, preparing for an invasion by Grayven, the son of Darkseid. GL managed to hold the line, defeating Grayven in sin-gle combat, although John Stewart was gravely injured in the battle (and left paralyzed from it). He takes Donna and Stewart back to Earth. Donna and Kyle decide to get back together.

Once returned to Earth, GL met the new Green Arrow and the two easi-ly became friends (as they were both in the same situation, two young men recently thrust into the life of a superhero and trying to fill the shoes of someone with a long, proud history).

Soon the Final Night happened. Earth's greatest heroes were una-ble to stop the Sun-Eater from en-veloping the Sun. In desperation, Kyle sought out Parallax and found him at the Source Wall. GL plead-ed with Hal to return and save the Earth. Parallax did come back, and after seeing the immense danger Earth was in, decided to try and redeem himself. Hal was success-ful at destroying the Sun-Eater and restoring the Earth to the way it was--but the cost was his own life. A memorial was held in Coast City for the former hero.

Shortly after the Final Night, GL became one of the charter mem-bers of the new JLA, after the "magnificent seven" saved Earth from a renegade band of White Martians. The new Justice League establishes their new base, the Watchtower, on the surface of the moon.

Kyle again had to contend with a former villain of the Green Lan-terns coming to Earth for revenge. This time, it was a woman named Fatality, an alien whose home of Xanshi had been destroyed partial-ly because of the actions of John Stewart. Fatality did not know who was responsible for the destruction of her world, only knowing that a Green Lantern was, and so she blamed all Green Lanterns and began to hunt them down all over the universe. Even after the Corps was destroyed, she continued her vendetta against its former mem-bers. Learning the last GL was on Earth, she arrived and battled Kyle across not only New York City, but also on an alien planet. Kyle man-aged to defeat her--but in the pro-cess she learned that John Stewart was the one she was seeking the most.

Back at his apartment, Kyle found a green skinned woman in his shower -- it was Jade, who asked if she could crash at his place for a while. Kyle agreed--much to the chagrin of his still-girlfriend Donna Troy (as well as Jade's brother Ob-sidian). Kyle took Donna to meet his mother in L.A., having fallen very much in love with her, but when Donna's ex-husband and son were killed in a car accident, she broke up with Kyle, explaining that she just needed some time apart to sort things through. Kyle took the breakup very hard.

Kyle decided to head for Hawaii, where he met up with Superboy to engage a deadly being masquer-ading as a Hawaiian goddess, Pe-le, who was using Silver Sword as her lackey. After Silver Sword turns on his mistress, Kyle and Superboy are able to defeat Pele. Superboy, having recently been dumped by his girlfriend, Tana Moon, is in a similar spot as Kyle, but far more depressed over the situation.

Just as Kyle was getting settled into his role, Hal Jordan would return--although this time, it was not Paral-lax, but rather Hal Jordan from approximately ten years before, plucked out of his own time and accidentally brought to the present with Kyle. The Justice League was happy to have the old Hal back, causing some resentment in Kyle as he felt he was being replaced. However, an "old version" of Paral-lax would show up, traveling through time from before the events of Zero Hour, and after a battle between the two Hals, both of them were returned to their proper times. Before he left, how-ever, Green Lantern Hal gave a copy of his power ring to Kyle, since his had the ability to dupli-cate itself, while Kyle's did not. At this time, Kyle and Jade also be-came romantically involved.

With Hal's ring, Kyle decided the time had come to try rebuilding the Green Lantern Corps. After Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, and John Stewart all turned down the offer for a new GL ring, Kyle gave one to Jade (who had recently lost her powers) and left her in charge while he decided to go into space and find some new recruits. Jade assumed the Green Lantern name and classic costume during her tour of duty. Fatality soon returned to Earth, however, continuing her vendetta against the Green Lan-terns. Kyle returned to Earth during the battle, and once again the fight started on Earth and ended on a distant world, but with some help from John Stewart, Fatality was defeated once again. Kyle's efforts in space to restart the Corps were not successful.

Kyle would get some more heart-ache when he finally bumped into Donna Troy again, this time as events in Day of Judgment were beginning. Donna explained that her existence then was possible solely because of Wally West's memories of her, causing her to doubt herself and her own feelings and explaining that they could probably never be together again. Jade, angry over feeling like she was nothing more than Kyle's silver medal, dumped him. All this hap-pened while Kyle had to literally go to Hell and back as part of the Day of Judgment--and in the aftermath, Hal Jordan would emerge as the new Spectre.

Shortly after the breakup, Kyle came under the influence of the Controllers, an alien race who had created Effigy, who attempted to take control of Green Lantern by creating a myriad of different hal-lucinations. Through sheer force of will, Kyle was able to defeat them and return home.

Kyle finally got a steady job doing a bi-weekly comic strip for a mag-azine called Feast. The job came with an assistant, a 16 year-old boy named Terry Berg. Kyle barely finished the first assignment when he was attacked at his home by a rogue group of Manhunters. This particular batch of Manhunters had become self aware, formed a col-lective consciousness and came after Kyle for his power ring. They intended to "assimilate" Kyle and have him use his ring as a power source in their quest to further evolve. They nearly succeeded, but Kyle managed to free himself and destroy them.

Kyle's new career began to take off, but even as it did so, Fatality returned again--this time equipped with a yellow power ring. After a fierce battle with Kyle, she went after John Stewart and Merayn. Kyle managed to stop her, but after she tried to surrender the power ring, it exploded, taking her arm with it. The Qwardians who had given her the ring decided to give it to Alex Nero instead. Kyle finally brought Fatalityto justice.

Fortunately, in the aftermath of the fight, Kyle and Jade managed to have a heart to heart conversation, and over the next few weeks they got back together. Nero then showed up in New York City with his ring. Utterly insane, he created legions of yellow "demons" that plagued the city (although they were more of a disruption than a threat) and Kyle had to call in the JLA for help. A massive battle en-sued across Manhattan. In the end, haunted by the ghosts of his past, Nero apparently self destructed. Green Lantern was hailed as the hero of the hour by the mayor of New York.

On top of the world, Kyle proposed to Jade (with a GL power ring no less). Worried that he was rushing into things, she turned him down, wanting to take time to work on their relationship. Terry was visibly upset about the news, leading Kyle for finally figure out that his assis-tant was gay and harboring a crush on him. Realizing how troubled the kid was with his own feelings, Kyle had a long talk with him and they became close friends.

Jade may have turned down the ring as an engagement one, but she did accept it to become a hero again. She also went with Kyle when he was requested for ser-vices as a goodwill ambassador to an alien planet. Things went bad while he was there, however, and a mission of peace quickly turned into a firefight.

During the 5th Week Event "Circle of Fire", it was discovered that a cosmic entity named Oblivion was the embodiment of Kyle's fear, unknowingly created when he first received the ring. It was not until later did Oblivion come to "merge" with Kyle. The JLA tried to stop Oblivion, but during the battle, Kyle was sent back to Earth to get rein-forcements. When he reached Earth, Kyle recruited Power Girl, The Atom, Firestorm, Adam Strange, and the Circle of Fire — ostensibly a group of Green Lan-terns from alternate realities and different time periods. In reality, Kyle created all of these Green Lanterns. The Circle of Fire con-sisted of Kyle's late girlfriend Alex, a pair of juvenile cousins (Hunter and Forest Rayner), a descendant of Wally West and Kyle Rayner who possessed both the Flash and Green Lantern's powers but could only use one of those powers a day (Green Lightning), a repro-grammed Manhunter robot (G.L.7177.6), and a Green Lantern from the Middle Ages.

This group was split up to handle different crises caused by Oblivion, or in some cases to search for a way to defeat him. Eventually they all realized that Kyle had created the Circle of Fire because he needed help. When they realized this, they decided that the created Green Lanterns should return to Kyle's mind. Doing so allowed Kyle to unlock more power from the ring that he had not used before. In a confrontation with Kyle, Oblivion revealed that he was a distillation of Kyle's doubts and darker im-pulses, made manifest through the power of the ring. After facing up to this, Kyle was able to defeat Obliv-ion and restore the JLA.

For a brief period Kyle achieved godhood as Ion, when he ab-sorbed the leftover energy in the sun after Hal Jordan sacrificed his life during the Final Night event, energy which had merged and grown with energies released after Oblivion's defeat. With his new powers, Kyle could bend time, space, and reality. Kyle could even be in many places at once. Kyle's trans-godlike powers had draw-backs however: Ion was one with everything, but Kyle Rayner could no longer sleep or separate him-self from the overwhelming re-sponsibilities. Kyle was now in the exact same position that Hal Jor-dan had been in when he had be-come Parallax. Rather than sacri-fice his humanity, Kyle abandoned omnipotence, bleeding off the vast power, recharging the Central Power Battery on the planet Oa (the headquarters of the Guardi-ans), and helping to create a new group of Guardians in the process. Before he purged all of the power though, he modified his ring. Once again limited only by his willpower and imagination, Rayner's ring can still affect yellow, does not have a set time limit on its power, and is keyed directly to him. Kyle modi-fied the ring so that it would always return to him, and so that it would always have a lifeline of power available (although the ring still required charging to get up to full power).

After the brutal beating of his young assistant and friend Terry Berg, Kyle went on a lengthy self-imposed exile into space. Before leaving, he placed John Stewart, recently fully healed from his par-aplegia and given a new power ring, into his spot in the JLA. Upon returning to Earth, he discovered that Jade had begun seeing someone new, and was doing so in his own apartment. He left New York and spent some time trying once again to find his place on Earth, and ended up staying with his mother for a brief time.

After being tricked into believing his mother had been murdered by Major Force, Kyle fought with the villain. Knowing Major Force was essentially immortal, Kyle decapi-tated him and sent his head off into outer space. Feeling that he was a danger to those he cared for, Rayner once again left for the far reaches of space. Soon after, the Guardians of the Universe sent Kyle on a special mission to re-trieve the corpse of Hal Jordan and he developed insight into the true nature of the Parallax entity. Fol-lowing which, he ceased to operate solely on Earth. He was given his first official Green Lantern Corps assignment from Kilowog, and met with the Guardians, along with Guy Gardner, about his role in the Corps. There, he was given special status amongst the Guardians, who consider him the "Torchbearer," the Green Lantern who carried the legacy through the Corps' darkest period.

"Once Kyle Rayner was the last Green Lantern, bearing the torch for a glorious tradition until the Guardians of the Universe and the Green Lantern Corps could be born anew. Today, Kyle has be-come the living embodiment of the Green Lantern legacy. Now he is Ion."

Jade died during a mission in the Rann-Thanagar War. Her power (the inherited Starheart-come-Green Lantern power) was trans-ferred to Kyle Rayner, vastly in-creasing his power, and instigated Kyle's second metamorphosis into Ion.

One year after Jade's death, Green Lantern Torquemada and his rook-ie partner, Garmin Vid, are investi-gating Sector 3521 and discover Kyle amidst the wreckage of an evacuation fleet from the Quinilon System. An incoherent Kyle blames himself for the fleet's de-struction, but repeatedly admits that he did not mean for it to hap-pen. The two fellow Lanterns at-tempt to aid Kyle and bring him back to Oa, but Kyle violently lash-es out, nearly killing Garmin Vid before fleeing the scene.

Torquemada returns to Oa with his wounded ally and informs Kilowog that "something is terribly wrong". Meanwhile, Kyle awakens on Earth in Kaaterskill's Notch, a secluded village refuge for artists. Kyle has no memory of the incident with Torquemada or Vid, nor does he remember the destruction of the evacuation fleet. While staying at Kaaterskill's Notch, Kyle is greeted by his landlord, an old man named Schuyler, and attempts to introduce himself to the newest tenant, a reclusive mute girl name Marissa Rochelle.

Later, Kyle is attacked by a Thana-garian bounty hunter named Tarra Karn and is forced to defend him-self. Kyle eventually forces her to reveal why she has chosen him as her prey and Kyle learns of the evacuation fleet's destruction and his apparent role in it.

On Oa, the Guardians have forbid-den Kilowog and the other Lan-terns from aiding Kyle, apparently wanting him to fight whatever it is that has possessed him. Indeed, it seems that something or someone is manipulating Kyle, causing memory lapses, bouts of violent anger and a lack of control over his actions and powers.

After visiting the wreckage of the evacuation fleet, Kyle loses control again and ends up on a world called Alytt where he impacts with a gladiator arena, unintentionally rescuing a warrior woman from a ferocious alien opponent via col-lateral damage. There, he freaks out again, nearly breaking her arm before flying off again and then finding himself in orbit over Mogo, the sentient Green Lantern planet.

Confronted by his own delusions and inner demons, in the form of his former girlfriends Alex, Donna, and Jade giving aid and sugges-tions, and Major Force as the em-bodiment of all his fears, Kyle ulti-mately realized the meaning of his "new life". He acknowledges, thanks to "Jade," that the Ion entity is a living conduit able to channel and harness both the Starheart and the Central Power Battery willpow-er energy. In space, Ariana, the mysterious alien girl, still angered for the massive devastation Rayner laid on her planet is encountered by Hal Jordan, who was sent to check on Kyle by Kilowog. The Guardians forbid anyone to leave Oa to help, but did not say anything about off-worlders going after him. It helps that Hal Jordan has gone through changes in his past, and would be the best to help.

Upon finding Ion decimating yet another world, Hal chooses to step in and speak with Kyle. The con-versation is short lived and Ion lashes out at Hal Jordan. The battle continues on until Hal defeats Kyle. However, upon requesting his ring to scan for any mental abnormali-ties that might explain Kyle's erratic behavior, the ring instead reveals the rampaging Ion to in fact be Alex Nero. Meanwhile, on Mogo, Kyle exits a green cocoon and heads out into space. Kyle catches up with Jordan, and Nero claims that his connection with Kyle and new powers are the result of a third party's interference.

With Nero in tow, Kyle confronts the Guardians and asks what they knew about his becoming Ion, why Nero was wreaking havoc as Ion, and why they ordered the Green Lantern Corps to not assist him. The Guardians claim they ordered the other Green Lanterns not to help because he needed to pass one final test for them to be sure he can handle his power. They explain that they had planned for Kyle to hold an honored position among Green Lanterns, but that he now possesses the power to revive the Green Lantern Corps, should it ever be destroyed again. The Guardians tell Kyle that he will no longer be required to patrol, but will be called in during situations that the Corps cannot handle by them-selves. The Guardians admit that they only know that some unfore-seen enemy has set Nero on a path of destruction to Oa. Nero unleashes a massive amount of energy, but Kyle dissipates the energy into what is presumed to be a "pocket universe".

Back on Earth, Kyle is met by a mysterious Monitor, who tells him that he is supposed to be dead. Kyle discovers that other enemies, like his old nemesis Effigy, are being put on his tracks. The cap-tured Effigy could only say that Kyle's location was given to him in a subliminal way, and, as the Guardians discover while interro-gating Nero, the knowledge of the enemy himself was expunged from his minions' mind.

Kyle returns to the planet scorched by Nero while using his name, and clears his reputation. Later Guy Gardner meets him to tell "bad news" about his mother who was in a hospital dying with no known medical cause. After comforting her, Kyle is once again contacted by a Guardian who tells him he must return to Oa at once. Before leaving Earth, he is assaulted by two superpowered individuals, a male and female who claim to be the Atom and the Flash respectively. After a brief fight, "Atom" gains the upper hand and knocks Kyle out. They then place the Lantern previously seen at the end of Infinite Crisis on his chest. After a brief flash, the Tangent Universe's Green Lantern appears, holding the Lantern.

Kyle awakens in "the Bleed," encountering the two children that found the Tangent Comics' lantern, as well as aiding Captain Atom, who is still sporting the Monarch armor, in a battle against Dae-monites. Kyle enlists Captain Atom's help in escaping the Bleed, re-absorbs the Tangent Comics' superheroes back into the lantern, and returns to the Guardians of the Universe, who send him on a mission to sector 3888.

At a satellite base inside of an as-teroid in sector 3888, Kyle discovers a number of dead Qwardian Weaponers, as well as Donna Troy. Able to find Grayven, and battle him, but unable to make him confess anything on the mysterious conspiration, he was again faced by one of the Monitors, and once again spared, his future to be reconsidered again.

Returned home, he tries to reanimate his mother's dead corpse using his Ion powers, but after a tearful farewell she refuses, asking Kyle to let her pass. He agrees, and he is left again in mourning in his new home, unable to sort out both his life, both the mysteries surrounding his recent misfortunes and encounters, seemingly tied together.

Kyle discovered a yellow power ring flying through space. He brought it to Oa to show to the Guardians, but before he was able to see them, the ring transported him to the Anti-Matter Universe world of Qward. Here, he found Sinestro speaking before throngs of members of the newly-formed Sinestro Corps. Overpowered by their numbers, Kyle was captured. Sinestro ripped the Ion entity from his chest and announced the true reason for his mother's death - the virus and Sinestro Corps member Despotellis. In that moment of fear, Sinestro unleashed the Parallax entity on Kyle, transforming him into a new Parallax and herald of the Anti-Monitor.

Trapped within his own mind, Kyle tried to break free, but when Parallax absorbed Hal Jordan into him, he helped Kyle expel Parallax from him. Ganthet and another female Guardian, Sayd, imprisoned Parallax in the Earth Lanterns' power batteries, and Ganthet gave Kyle a new power ring. Kyle helped Hal defend Coast City from Sinestro, engaging in a fist fight which end-ed when Hal finally defeated Sinestro.

On Oa, Kyle confronted the Guardians over their deceptions regarding Ion, and their percieved abandonment of him on Qward. The Guardians explained that Kyle was a temporary host for Ion, made possible by Jade's death during the Infinite Crisis, which was unexpected. They also explained that they knew Hal and the other earthmen would rescue Kyle, and offered to let him keep the ring Ganthet gave him. Kyle had a talk with Sodam Yat, the new host of Ion. During their discussion, they were attacked by Nero, but Sodam was able to take control of Nero's constructs (something Kyle, while as Ion, never thought he could do) and defeat him. Meeting up with Hal, Guy, and John, Kyle revealed that he was now a member of the Green Lantern Honor Guard. Soon afterwards, Kyle moved to Oa.

As part of his duties with the Honor Guard, Kyle began working with other members of the Corps, including Guy and Soranik Natu, growing closer to her. He joined the hunt for the Quintet, a family of Sinestro Corps siblings who were murdering the families of rookie Green Lanterns. Following this, Kyle and Soranik joined KT21 and the Pree couple to locate Kryb, a Sinestro Corps member who was murdering Green Lanterns and stealing their children.

In Sector 1111, they met up with Kryb, but damaged the Sector House. As he saw one of the mur-dered Lantern's bodies burn up on reentry, Kyle snapped and launched a violent physical assault on Kryb. The other Lanterns attempt to restrain him allowed Kryb the chance to expose them to a chemical agent she secreted that took control of their minds, causing Kyle, Soranik, KT21, and Matoo Pree to attack Amnee Pree and force her to go into labor. Kyle was able to overcome the agent's effects and free the others. He and KT21 attacked Kryb while Soranik and Matoo helped Amnee give birth. The Lanterns were assisted by Miri Riam, the newest member of the Star Sapphire Corps. Although KT21 was killed when she tried to kill Kryb, the monster her-self was defeated, and Amnee gave birth. At the same time, the Lanterns were informed that romantic relationships were forbidden between Green Lanterns from this point on. Miri announced that she was taking Kryb to Zamaron to rehabilitate her, and Kyle dismissed her plan, admitting that he had lost too many to give love another chance. Miri then had her look into her crystal to see his true love, and what he saw was Soranik. Kyle left the choice with the Prees, who had decided to resign following the new rule's implemen-tation, and chose to give Miri's plan a chance.

Returning to Oa, Kyle and Guy dis-cussed the Guardians' recent law, which Kyle felt was like they were trying to micromanage their souls. Soranik then stopped by and asked to talk with Kyle alone. Heading to Guy's Place, the two discussed what they saw within the crystal, and shared a passionate embrace. Soranik then noticed the drawing Kyle was working, a rendition of KT21's death. Kyle showed her his scrapbook, revealing that he was drawing the deaths of recent Lan-terns as a way of mourning them. Soranik felt that he needed to celebrate their lives, and convinced him to make a mural of the history of the Green Lantern Corps. In Kyle's apartment, he and Soranik share a kiss. Kyle tells her about the progress he has made on the mural. Soranik encourages Kyle's work. They discuss their newfound relationship and how it goes against the third law. Kyle reas-sures her that if what they felt for each other put the Corps at risk, he would gladly give up his ring. So-ranik leaves to tell her people about Sinestro's recent escape.

Kyle is one of the Green Lanterns on Oa when Scar releases the prisoners in the Sciencells. Kyle along with Guy, Kilowog, and Sa-laak, lead the Green Lanterns to battle the escaped prisoners. Dur-ing the riot, Kyle rescues Kanjar Ro and enlists his help in recapturing the other prisoners by offering to talk to the Guardians about reduc-ing his sentence. As the Green Lanterns capture the escaped criminals, Oa's protective shell is destroyed by Scar. Kyle and Guy strongly oppose the Guardians' authorization of allowing the Alpha Lanterns to execute all the prison-ers with no trial. Because of this insubordination, the Guardians suspend Kyle and Guy and order them back to Earth, but decide to honor their promise of leniency and spare Kanjar and Bolphunga.

Kyle attends a parade in Coast City with Hal, John, and Guy to honor the citizens who died in Mongul's attack. After the parade, Kyle goes to Valhalla Cemetery with Alan Scott to visit Jade's grave. He and Guy Gardner return to Oa, where Kyle confides in Guy that when he looked in Miri Riam's sapphire, he had not seen Soranik, but Jade, and was feeling guilty for lying to Soranik. The two then meet up with Soranik and Princess Iolande, who have been out of touch since the Sciencell riot.

As they approach the planet, black rings descend upon Oa where they travel to the crypt of fallen Green Lanterns, transforming them into undead Black Lanterns, and Kyle finds himself face to face with Jade, now a Black Lantern.

Jade tries to seduce Kyle, claiming that his love for her is what brought her back, but Kyle quickly realizes that the Jade before him is only a soulless corpse - not the Jade he once loved. Enraged, he attacks her for disgracing Jade's memory, only to see her recover and attack him with black constructs resem-bling those that he failed to save, in an attempt to further stoke the emotional fire that is already sweeping through him.

Eventually, the conflict on Oa came to a climax and the Black Lanterns gathered around the Central Power Battery to summon Nekron and destroy the willpower at its source. Knowing that somebody had to stop them, Kyle grabbed a Alpha Lantern Power Battery and plunged himself with it directly into the core, detonating it and triggering a massive explosion destroying all of the Black Lanterns in its wake. Although his ploy was successful, the sacrifice cost him his life. He did not hesitate for a second, except to tell Soranik that he loved her and Guy that he had been a brother to him. Enraged at the death of his partner, Guy succumbs to his emotions and be-comes a member of the Red Lantern Corps, unable to control himself. However, as Soranik rushes to Kyle's side, the power of their love draws Sapphire Miri Riam to the spot, and she uses her powers to help revive him. Resurrected, Kyle is re-inducted into the Corps and ready to get back to the fight. However, when confronting Guy, the red power ring's influence has becomes so overwhelming, that he even attacks Kyle and eventually the rest of the Green Lantern Corps after Mogo destroys every Black Lantern in Oa's vicinity. After the Green Lantern Corps, Indigo Tribe, and Star Sapphires subdue and free Guy from the red ring, they all receive a message from leaders of each respective Corps instructing them head to Earth to stop Nekron, the lord of the Black Lantern Corps, and his growing undead army.

All seven corps travel to Earth to battle Nekron's Black Lantern Corps. He remarks that the Guard-ians would probably leave out the Corps' Alliance from the Book of Oa. Kyle was then confronted by Alex, who had also transformed into a Black Lantern. Alex tries to convince Kyle to kill himself, but by realizing that she was not the true Alex, Kyle was able to defeat her. With the Indigo Lantern Munk's help, Kyle was able to finally lay Alex to rest. He then helped battle the Anti-Monitor alongside the oth-er Lanterns trying to destroy him and the Black Lantern Central Battery. While they are successful in knocking out the Anti-Monitor, he was still trapped inside the Battery itself.

He helped the battle against Ne-kron along with the other members of the seven corps. He believed they can defeat Nekron by working together, something that Guy is doubtful they can do. After Nekron is defeated, the Entity resurrects many dead heroes and villains, Jade being among them. Much to his surprise, Jade kisses him in front of Soranik.

Some time after Blackest Night, Kyle encourages Jade to stop dwelling on the past and to live again. He and Soranik leave Jade to dwell on his words and fly back to Oa. On Oa, Kyle helps his fellow Lanterns rebuild after the Black Lanterns' rampage. He and Guy discuss the series of events following the Sinestro Corps War up to the latest crisis, while on their way to the memorial for fallen Lanterns being held on Mogo. He, along with Guy and Arisia, force their way to the Guardians' Citadel after the Guardians canceled the group's scheduled meetings. They berate the Guardians on their lack of emo-tions and trust in the Green Lantern Corps. Kyle voices his disapproval of the Third Law, citing that many experienced Lanterns resigned because of it. He warns the Guard-ians that they (the GLs) will not go back to the way things were before, and tells them that they will have to earn the Corps' trust again.

He and Ganthet visit John, who is helping to rebuild Oa. During his conversation with John, it is re-vealed that Kyle's apartment was destroyed. John questions Kyle on where he is staying as he has not seen him in the barracks. Kyle tells him that he is staying with Soranik until he can find a new place. John tells him not to rush things, to which Kyle responds that Soranik is different from his previous girlfriends and that "no one rushes that girl into anything." Later that night Kyle had a dream about Jade and wake up screaming her name next to Soranik, Kyle tries to ex-plain but the more he explained the worse it sounds, but they are interrupted by Ganthet, who says the all the Alpha Lanterns had de-parted Oa, Kyle remembered that John is on a mission with Boodikka, so they go to Grenda. In Grenda they see Horoq Nnot is now an Alpha Lantern. she starts draining their power, so they flee, and realise the Alpha Lanterns is compromised, Ganthet makes a distraction leaving Kyle a chance to rescue John, but having to leave Ganthet behind to deal with Cyborg Superman, Soranik was being attacked by Varix, to saved her, Kyle cuts both of Varix's hands off, and said if he had to kill him to save her he would. So Kyle, John and Soranik take refuge in the cave, they see the guardians in the cave, and encourages them to fight against the Cyborg Superman, in the mean time they called Hannu, but their message is detected by the Al-phas, Boodikka goes to investigate and draws out all of Kyle's power, but Hannu shows up and breaks her free from Henshaw's control, to prove to them that she is on their side she let them recharge their rings. Kyle's idea was attacking like a tidal wave using the guardians to make Henshaw lose his control over the machines, John and Kyle faced Hanshaw while soranik res-cued Ganthet and Stel, with the help of the other Lanterns Kyle and John destroys Hanshaw's body, but he was really stopped by Boodik-ka's willpower.

Kyle was covering Soranik's sector, when he was attacked by a Weaponer of Qward, who called himself The Weaponer, he defeated Kyle easily and kidnapped Soranik, and told him if he wanted to see her again he would have to bring Sinestro to Qward. Kyle then flies to earth to tries to convince him, but Sinestro refuses to help and starts a fist fight with Kyle. Kyle goes to Oa and asks for the Green Lantern Honor Guard to help him rescue Soranik. In Qward The Weaponer defeats the Honor Guard, Kyle rescues Soranik and together they go to help their teammates, the whole Sinestro Corps arrives except for Sinestro. Kyle stayed between the fire of the Sinestro Corps and the Thunderers of Qward, he tells them that if they do not use the rings the truce will not shatter. During this Firestorm shows up asking if Kyle had seen a black lantern version of him, Kyle said he had not and Firestorm stays to fight alongside the Lanterns.

When Kyle and the Honor Guard come back to Oa, they see all the Alpha Lanterns offline. The Power Ring tells them that the impurity is back. Kyle, Ganthet and John do not suffer the effects but the rest of the Corps do, as Ganthet states that Parallax is back in the Central Battery. All the others Lantern start to regroup in there, and Kyle worried about Soranik loses control to Parallax and starts a fight with John, Ganthet manages to break them free from their corrupted rings, and tells Kyle that he was not given the last ring at random, and says that he was his best hope then and he is now.

John and Kyle later encounter Hal and Guy, and Hal says that when the Book of the Black absorbed the New Guardians, the book left the rings. So the four get to choose one the rings. Guy chose the Red Power Ring, Hal the Yellow Power Ring and he gives John the Indigo Power Ring, and Kyle chose the Blue Lantern Ring.

John and Kyle were training with their new rings, but they both were struggling with their rings. The two were suddenly attacked by the Green Lantern Corps, and unwittingly Kyle's blue ring starts to supercharge the Green Lanterns. Kyle and the others fly to find Ganthet fighting the Corps. Ganthet is disappointed to see them using other rings, when they are attacked again. Ganthet tells Kyle to focus on their minds instead of their rings, when he starts thinking he got them Mogo shows up and blasts them.

When Kyle and the others runaway from the Corps, they go under-ground and Hal tells that they have to take Parallax off the Central Bat-tery, but John replies that Mogo is more dangerous and he has have to be dealt first. Guy, John and Hal start argue, but Kyle says to put on a vote, so they go to Central Battery combining their rings to dig up to the Battery, they reach the center of Oa and find where the Guardians hide their darkest secret. They see Krona's gauntlet and Guy takes it, but a very old Green Lantern ap-pears and fights them. Kyle stops the fight and says that they are all green lanterns causing the Green Lantern to leave after he see that they are indeed allies, but the computer shows that Mogo is creating several rings and sending them to the sectors. Kyle and John decide to deal with Mogo, before Krona can create an infinite army of Green Lanterns. John uses his ring to teleport him and Kyle to Mogo.

Getting there, John and Kyle try to contain the rings but without suc-cess they try to reach Mogo's mind, and John sees that Mogo cannot help himself. John taps into the Black Lantern energy that remains of the last purge of Oa and uses it to kill Mogo, before Kyle's eyes. In the fallout, the two regroup with Hal, Guy and Ganthet, using the full power of the emotional spectrum to crack open the Battery and release Parallax. Their job done, the Lanterns regain their original green rings, in preparation for the final confrontation with Krona. Hal during the fight ask Kyle to rescue the New Guardians drawing the pages of Book of the Black, which set them free.

After Krona's defeat Kyle tries to reconcile with John Stewart unsuc-cessfully. Still during the aftermath Kyle stops Soranik Natu and other Green Lanterns from trying to breaking in into the Oan Citadel to kill Sinestro now wearing a green ring. The Guardians thank Kyle, but said that will be best if he go home after his disagreement with Stewart and his break up with Natu. Before he went, Rayner and the Green Lantern Honor Guard toss Mogo's remains into the Oan Sun making the sun showing a green lantern symbol.

HISTORY
Gorilla Grodd was The Flash's enemy from Gorilla City, a city in the jungles of Africa populated by intelligent gorillas. He possessed amazing intelligence and force of mind capabilities, powers allegedly granted him when he was exposed to a space-rock that landed in the African jungles (though another account states that Gorilla City originated on the planet of Calor and was brought to Earth as a result of Grodd's machinations when he already had his powers).

Grodd's mind took over the body of criminal William Dawson, who was in prison. When released, he traveled back to Gorilla City. Upon reaching his destination, Dawson's body devolved back into Grodd's original gorilla form. There, he saw and fell in love with Solovar's bride-to-be, Boka. Determined to have her, he designed a machine that caused his body to emanate neo-magnetic radiation. As a result, everyone who saw him instantly liked him. He arrived at the wedding procession, and Boka immediately became infatuated with him. They were married, and Grodd was declared king of Gorilla City. Not satisfied, he had the gorillas build him a plane, which he flew to Central City, where the humans quickly began adoring him, including the Flash. He began running for governor as the Statewide Party candidate, planning on continuing on to president after that. However, the Flash foiled Grodd's plan when he discovered that the neo-magnetic radiation could be counteracted by solar flare radiation, which he duplicated by vibrating his body at super speed to match the frequency. Afterwards, Grodd was easily apprehended.

Grodd had been trapped inside the human body of an overweight street bum. He was attacked by a gang known as the Vultures. One of them commented on how their member Iggo had the strength of a gorilla, which reminded Grodd of his true form. Suddenly changing back to his original shape and size, he quickly defeated the gang, making them believe that they are burning in molten lava by using his force of mind power. Reading the minds of the crooks, he saw that one of the former members of their gang was a friend of the Flash, and a plan began to form in his mind.

Grodd found another space-rock, identical to the one that had given him his powers, and contacted Hector Hammond, a human who had also gained similar powers through another space-rock, hoping to use this meteorite as a super-weapon to rule the world. However, while Hammond and Grodd tried to wrestle this meteorite away from the Green Lantern, who had joined the Flash in Africa, it exploded, accelerating Grodd's evolution even more so. With these heightened powers, Grodd was able to gain control of Gorilla City's entire population. With the help of Rex the Wonder Dog, the two were able to defeat Grodd. The battle left Grodd's mind like a child's, and he and Hammond, who the meteorite had turned into a Cro-Magnon, were left in Gorilla City to be educated into useful citizens.

After being nearly killed, Grodd was healed by the Nzame, a holy child to the gorillas of Gorilla City. He was prepared to kill the infant, but was suddenly summoned to Keystone City by Spin in an effort to defeat the Flash. Angered, Grodd proceeded to destroy Spin's lair. Their battle spilled out into the streets of Keystone, where they were met by the Flash.

CONTACTS: NewsBoy Legion; Police Force; Federal Government

HISTORY:
James Jacob "Jim" Harper was the street-level vigilante the Guardian. In his civilian life, he was a rookie cop in the Metropolis Police Department, walking his beat in Suicide Slum.

Jim Harper was orphaned at an early age. He had one sister, Mary, and two brothers. Between them, his siblings had at least three grandchildren: "Bobby" Harper, Roy Harper and Jamie Harper.

Harper grew up on the streets. In the wake of the Great Depression, he had to fend for himself on the tough streets of Suicide Slum. Together with his best friend Leo, they took to petty theft to get food. One day, he was picked out by a man calling himself Nat Milligan, who offered him a way out of the slums. Milligan wanted to make Harper a world class athlete, and the boy trained under him for years. Milligan wanted the boy to make money as a champion.

Against his mentor's wishes, Jim returned to Suicide Slum to see how Leo had faired. But his old friend had never broken away from the wrong side of the law. Now a member of organized crime, Leo had to lay low after he killed a rival boss in New Jersey. At their reunion, Leo was himself murdered in a drive-by in retaliation. Not wanting the slum to make any more victims, Jim gave up his future in sports and broke off his ties with Milligan. He decided to join the police as the only adult who had ever treated him well was the local patrolman.

As a cop, Jim Harper learned to see Suicide Slum from a different angle. Not a beat would go by without someone throwing bricks or tomatoes at him, but he shrugged it all off. One night, after clocking off, hoodlums ambushed him in an alley. This proved the last straw. He needed to take action. Stumbling into a closed costume store, he picked a suit that allowed him both comfort and protection, and dutifully paid for it.

He had recognized one of the hoodlums' voice as a regular patron of a nearby pool hall. He busted the scene, and recognized that one of the goons had a bill in his wallet that matched one in the ransom of the Johnson kidnapping. He tied them all up and left before the police arrived. He decided to keep the costume just in case.

The next day, he stopped a group of newsies from robbing a grocer. He attended their trial, and stepped in to speak on their behalf. Fearing a stint in reform school would only worsen their situation, he bartered with the judge for leniency. He would get custody of the boys for a couple of months, in which he wanted to bring them on the straight and narrow. The boys wouldn't have it, and ran away from him as soon as they were free.

He met the boys again when they were performing tricks on the main street. What he didn't know was they were sent by their underground contact to gather a crowd at the scene, to allow cover for a robbery. Not wanting to hurt bystanders, he refrained from shooting. He did pick up the name of the boys' contact: Frankie the Fence. Donning his costume, he went to the Newsies' dive and confronted Frankie. Guardian trailed Frankie to the harbor, and the boys trailed Guardian. Frankie eventually stopped at a lighthouse to see his boss, Chips Carder. When Guardian arrived, he was ambushed. Quick thinking from Guardian after he spotted the Newsies led to the arrival of the Coast Guard; Carder was shot and the rest arrested. It marked the first time the Guardian and the Newsboy Legion worked together, and though Harper tried desperately to pretend otherwise, the boys suspected it was him underneath the helmet from the start.

Harper's first meeting with other heroes came on his first night as a hero. As he rounded a corner after breaking up the pool hall, he was sucked into a mysterious glowing orb that tampered with his mind. It teleported him to a circus tent where the Justice Society was performing, and with a similarly brainwashed Wildcat and Atom, attacked Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash. After overcoming their mind control, the three new heroes worked with the JSA to find out what caused the orbs to take them. Here, Harper learned that Nat Milligan was really Joe Morgan, who had also trained the other heroes. They discovered that a cosmic enemy known only as Evil was behind the plot. During the War, he became a member of the All-Star Squadron, though mostly as a reserve.
Retirement and death

Years later, Harper was graying, but he kept his body in shape. He gave up wearing the costume though. He remained friends with the Newsboy Legion, who in adult life had grown up to be successful scientists. The kids approached him for genetics testing and acquired some of his DNA. Harper was fed lies, and believed it was going to be used for medical research. However, as the boys could not betray their mentor and life-saver, they told him. How their employer, the DNA Project, had used his genetic material to create a clone of him.

Harper decided to don the costume again, and went inside the Project. He left a string of unconscious guards in his wake as he made his way to the chamber in which his clone was kept. He observed his clone, waiting for someone to stop him. Jonathan Drew, the chief of security, arrived at the scene, and explained the consequences of his actions. He killed Harper with a single bullet to the chest.

Harper's death proved problematic for the Project. Harper's genetics were perfect for cloning, and his death set the procedures back some ten years. Further clones would have to be made from the original clone, which were almost always imperfect. To cover the death, the directors created a story that Harper was killed in the line of duty. Few in the DNA Project knew the real story, but other than Drew and the scientists, Dubbilex was aware of it as well.

- From the wiki: Because of his perfect genetics, Project Cadmus cloned Guardian (Jim Harper). The clone escaped early on, but Cadmus created clones of him to keep the charade of Guardian going. As these were clones of a clone, their genetic structure was unstable. Many wore down after a year, and many did not even get that old. While some had the exact memories of the original Jim Harper, others had very little brain activity.

Following Infinite Crisis it was revealed that the first clone had actually parted ways with Cadmus much earlier than had been revealed, and had instead found work with Sheriff Greg Saunders in a town called Warpath in the southern United States. All other appearances by the Guardian at Cadmus were revealed to be other, short-lived clones. This original clone eventually returned to Metropolis along with Gwen, an adopted daughter who was revealed to be a gender-swapped clone of himself. During the New Krypton arc he became involved with the Science Police, and was soon appointed Field Commander. Around this time he also became a mentor for Mon-El.

When the Justice League was attacked by Prometheus he was present on the Watchtower, and was briefly blinded in the attack. After this he was recruited into the Justice League by Dr Light. While a member of the League he participated in a single mission, fighting against Doctor Impossible and several other villains. Soon after he was dropped from the story. After the War of the Supermen he disappeared along with his grandniece Jamie Harper, a Gotham City Police officer, who was pregnant with Mon-El's child. His current whereabouts are unknown.

He later was contacted by Kirk DePaul, clone of Paul Kirk The Manhunter. He then learned that there were other cloning facilities where clones of Jim Harper were being created and readied as an army. The two then set out on a mission to stop the organization behind the cloned army.

HISTORY:

TALENTS: Martial Arts: A; Thief

CONTACTS: JLA (high); Street (low)

HISTORY:
Cindy Reynolds is born to Edward and June Reynolds, who live their life in a peaceful, suburban home. Cindy grows up an intelligent and experienced bare-footer, which is later always to be one of her best signature trademarks as a teenager. Soon after Cindy's brother is born, Edward and June begin to fight. Cindy tries to keep her parents together but mostly suffers some abuse as well. When her powers of illusion begin to manifest at age fourteen, Cindy runs away from home, buying a one-way bus ticket to Detroit.

Once in Detroit, Cindy uses her chameleon and illusion-casting powers to protect herself. As the young woman grows, she transforms into the mysterious Gypsy, adopting her vagabond style of dress. Gypsy quickly becomes a myth among the people of Cameron Street, which she calls "home". As fate would have it, this is a sector of Detroit where the Justice League would soon take up residence after Aquaman disbanded the original League).

Shortly after the League moves into their new inner city HQ, Gypsy begins to daringly test and penetrate the League's security measures. Eventually, she becomes brave enough to follow along with them and to aid in the battle against the Overmaster and his Cadre. After this, Gypsy nets an offer to become a full-time member of the Justice League. Gypsy goes on to participate in the League's struggles against the power-mad Anton Allegro and a reactivated Amazo.

Cindy does indeed descend from the line of Romani people — more commonly known as the "Gypsies." But for whatever her reason (perhaps a sense of mistrust bred by centuries of persecution), she tends to guard the secrets of her superhuman powers. Gypsy finds cause to test these powers to their limits when the new JLA is unexpectedly ambushed by the Royal Flush Gang during a wilderness retreat, where Gypsy improves her physical prowess. Before the villains attack, Gypsy learns evasive action in swinging her body into the air, improving her speed and agility with newly-learned acrobatics. During one of the battles, she escapes a fire by diving into the lake, rapidly swimming underwater safely to the other side, evading the flames and finding help for her wounded partners. While her teammates are incapacitated, Gypsy ventures outside her own body, in astral form. In this form, she can spy on the Gang's activities. Also during this mission, she receives a dire premonition about the fates of her teammates Steel and Vibe.

This League is doomed, though. In his bid to wipe out the new JLA, Professor Ivo sends an android to destroy Gypsy, but she manages to find its conscience and convinces it not to kill her. Though Ivo succeeds in killing Steel and Vibe (as she'd foreseen), the android sees Cindy safely returned to her parents' keeping.

Gypsy's domestic happiness is short-lived, as some time after she has left the JLA, a vengeful Despero arrives at her home and remorselessly murders her parents. Gypsy would have been Despero's next victim, if not for the timely intervention of the Martian Manhunter and the rest of the Justice League. Devastated by the loss of her family, Gypsy is immediately recruited by Booster Gold to become a member of the corporate-sponsored team of heroes known as the Conglomerate.

Over time, she grows very close to the Martian Manhunter, developing a sort of father/daughter relationship. The two of them are the mainstays of the short-lived Justice League Task Force. During her time in the JLTF, she is nearly forced to battle Lady Shiva in one early adventure, and is left for dead on another mission. She later joins the revamped Task Force along with L-Ron (in the body of Despero), The Ray and Triumph. Gypsy and Ray are both later mind-controlled and used by Triumph during his strike against the reformed JLA.

As a member of the Justice League Task Force, Gypsy helped Bruce Wayne in the search of the kidnapped Shondra Kinsolving and Jack Drake. She teamed-up with Bronze Tiger and Green Arrow, but despite their combined forces, they failed on their mission.

After the JLTF was disbanded, Gypsy and J'onn kept in touch. In fact, she was killed at one point, but is miraculously returned to life by the Manhunter, who pleads with his god, Hronmeer, to restore her life. She once also aids Wonder Woman during a massive battle against Circe.

Most recently, Gypsy joins the cast of Oracle's Birds of Prey, wearing a black leather jacket and boots on secret missions. Oracle greatly relies on Gypsy's stealth for their undercover work and, in fact, didn't even tell her other operatives about Gypsy's involvement. She has demonstrated greater flexibility with her powers as well, now able to extend her powers of invisibility to others and things around her.

Gypsy also joins another Bird — her former JLA comrade Vixen — to clean up the remnants of a years-old case. The two heroines rescue Stargirl when after discovering that Amos Fortune was kidnapping members of the JSA.

CONTACTS: Batman, Outsiders, Markovian government, JLA, Teen Titans.

HISTORY:
Halo was once two separate entities. A light being part of the ancient race called the Aurakles and the female human called Violet Harper.

Violet Harper was a young woman who lived in Arlington, Missouri with her parents, Sam and Margaret Harper. Violet had photographic memory, but despite this advantage, she was a problem child and in her teenage years, she became even more troublesome. Eventually, she met Mark Denniger and started a relationship with him, although she merely used him for her own convenience. Violet and Mark stole a drug formula from crimelord Tobias Whale, who had his operative Syonide follow them to Europe, where she eventually killed Violet in Markovia.

Violet's body was found by the Aurakle, who existed since the dawn of time and was intrigued by organic beings. The Aurakle's energy was somehow transferred to the dead body, giving it new life and powers, but erasing all memories from their previous existence as human and energy. Just moments later, she was found by Batman and learned that she couldn't remember anything, even her own name. Because of her obvious abilities to control light, Batman gave her the codename Halo and he guided her to safety. Batman and Halo later joined the war in Markovia along with other heroes and they managed to defeat Baron Bedlam. Thanks to their combined efforts, Batman decided to create a new team called the Outsiders and Halo was glad to become part of it.

Halo travelled to Gotham along with the rest of the team, where Batman gave her and Katana permission to live in the penthouse above the Wayne Foundation building. Later, Halo was assited by Bruce Wayne in order to find her a legal identity and she chose the name Gabrielle Doe[5] and became Katana's legal ward. In order to keep her identity concealed, Halo had to attend high school as a normal student and she and started dating some boys. As a teammate of Halo, Brion Markov showed concern for her, but using his powers as Geo-Force, he spoiled one of Halo's dates. In return, Halo did the same with one of his dates and during the ensuing argument, they realized they had romantic interest in each other.

Eventually, Batman found evidence of Halo's past and learned about her human pas as Violet Harper, from Missouri. Halo was taken there, where she remained with Violet's parents for a short time. Living as Violet Harper, Halo learned that she had made a lot of enemies. During Christmas, Halo returned to Gotham and after a talk with Geo-Force, they ended their relationship in good terms. Also during this time, Halo prevented Geo-Force from killing a criminal with help from Superman.

Afterwards, Halo and Violet's parents were kidnapped by Tobias Whale, who wanted to retrieve the drug formula Violet had stolen, but of course, Halo had no memory or recollection of such situation. She summoned the Outsiders to her hometown to assist her, but sadly in the struggle, Violet's parents were killed by Syonide. Halo was finally taken to the Justice League Satellite, where the Outsiders managed to recover her memories as an Aurakle, but with her memory restored, she was taken away by the rest of the Aurakles, who had come to separate the human body from the energy being. Halo was taken to the Aurakle dimension, where they planned to separate them, killing her, but she was saved by the Outsiders, who forced the Aurakles to release Halo and leave them in peace. Halo was glad to return home, but she left again to find herself.

Wandering alone, Halo accidentally joined a cult run by Kobra and when the villains learned of her presence, they tortured her to learn Batman's secret identity. She was rescued by the Outsiders and she rejoined the team to defeat the Kobra Cult. Eventually, Halo decided to adopt her own identity and she got a haircut, making her previously long hair, very short and cute.

After the Outsiders was framed for the murder of Markovia's Queen, which was caused by Roderick and his vampire forces, they were forced to flee. Technocrat's evil ex-wife, Marissa Barron hires an old associate named Ryer who believes Technocrat had abandoned him in Markovia. As the cyborg Sanction, he nearly kills the team in Switzerland. Later, in Gotham City, he attacks again, slaying both Marissa and Halo. As with Violet Harper, Halo's essence is sucked into Marissa's body, reanimating it.

During an attempt by the Outsiders to create a new headquarters, other Aurakles would return to reclaim Halo. Halo would later strike up a relationship with Sebastian Faust, a fellow Outsider that not many on the team trusted. The entire team is eventually cleared of wrongdoing. Halo later returns to Markovia. There she assists in combating a portal to Hell that had opened as part of the Day of Judgment incident.

During the Infinite Crisis, supervillain prisons around the world are opened as the respective wardens had been targeted and blackmailed. Halo was part of a makeshift team of heroes battling a breakout at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. She later joins the Battle of Metropolis, helping other heroes protect the city from an army of super-villains bent on its destruction.
Soon after the events of the crisis, she assists a team of astronauts in a space station searching for heroes missing in action. She detects traces of Zeta radiation, a sign of Adam Strange, one of the many missing.

She later became part of an other multi-hero battle, this time against the murderous Black Adam.

Halo was helping to keep spirits up in New Orleans during the rebuilding process after Hurricane Katrina when she is approached by Alfred Pennyworth. Under directions from a now deceased Batman, Alfred informs her that he wants her to be a part of a reformed team of Outsiders.

During a recovery mission with the Outsiders, Halo along with the Creeper and Katana's recently resurrected family come under attack by a Black Lantern Ring. The Creeper was easily dispatched, retreats into the woods in order to get help from their prisoner; Killer Croc. While Katana battles with her husband, Halo is forced to fight Katana's children. Although her light based powers prove ineffective at first Halo unleashes more power than ever before in order to save her teammates whose abilities have no long term effect on the Lanterns. Finally she manages to destroy the Black Lantern Rings, and goes to aid the rest of her team who are also under attack.

Back in their headquarters the rest of the Outsiders are faced with a recently risen Terra and are hopelessly outmatched, until Halo intervenes. With great effort she manages to separate Terra from her ring and to destroy it while Geo-Force turns Terra's body to stone in order to keep her from coming back again. Halo however disperses into light, her last words being that the "light" is calling her.

Some time later, Halo returned but she had no memory of her past. Geo-Force and Katana took her as a member of the Outsiders once more and tried to help her recover her lost memories. As a team, they settled in Markovia, where Geo-Force ruled as the prince and they were soon visited by Looker. Halo attacked Looker thingking that she was an enemy but Katana explained everything to her. That same day, someone made a threat to Brion's life and the Outsiders worked together to find the killer and Halo was the first to locate the mysterious vigilante the Insider and tried to bring him down. Insider used an electrified cable to stun Halo while he faced the others. After the fight, Halo was taken back to the medical ward of Castle Markov.

HISTORY:
Hannibal King was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a skilled private investigator who made a decent living; While working on a case in London King was bitten by Deacon Frost, a Vampire. When he had awaken and realized he had become a vampire he was disgusted and horrified by the transformation. King vowed never to feed from a human and instead purchased blood from blood banks to feed. King also decided not to use his new found powers in his line of work deciding to rely on his own natural skills he had built over years of work, but was now forced to work at night times.

A woman named Adrianne Brown Walters entered the London office of King. She wanted him to look into the murder of her newly-wed husband, Fred Walters, whom she believed was killed by an otherworldly beast. Mrs. Walters described the case in detail, including the fact that she witnessed a man bite her husband across the throat before disappeared out of sight.
King automatically knew that Mrs. Walters was describing the actions of a vampire. He went to the "Lucky Inn" to ask questions. The bartender invited King into the back where he subsequently attacked him. King easily beat the man down, and discovered two small bite marks on the man's neck. The bartender was obviously in service to a vampire.

King began to investigate Fred Walters' employers, Wyandanch Limited. He encountered Dracula conspiring with one of his underlings. Dracula turned to attack him, and King fired a gunshot into the vampire lord. The bullet passed through him and struck Dracula's servant, O'Brien. Dracula pushed Hannibal out of a two-story window. King got up and went back inside, but Dracula was gone. He interrogated O'Brien and asked him about his latest shipping manifest - specifically, the destination of a wooden coffin. O'Brien told him that one was shipped to a warehouse in Kensington.

Hannibal went to the warehouse and finds Dracula as well as several of his followers. He fought off each of the vampires; Dracula heard police sirens in the distance and dispersed. Hannibal met with Mrs Walters. He told her everything that he learned, and explained that Dracula killed her husband to cover up the paper trail concerning the exportation of his various coffins.

While searching for the vampire that bit him, he met Blade, the vampire killer. At first they fought, but became a mutual allies as Frost was the one who killed Blade's mother. Hannibal easily defeated Blade but due to their mutual missions they decided to work together. They waited in Frost's apartment for his recent victim to rise as a vampire. When he awoke he explained he dug up a coffin had an exact copy of Blade. Blade and Hannibal King continue their hunt for Deacon Frost, they wondered how Frost intends to take over the world with a duplicate of Blade. Blade and King went to London so Blade can visit Saffron. Blade and King find the "Doppelgänger" and he reveals that he was created to destroy him. The two fight, but Blade stops when the two are beginning to fuse together upon physical contact. Hannibal King tried to rush to Blade's rescue; however he was too late to stop the merger from completing. With the vampire doppelgänger in full control of their unified body, it set it's sites on King. The Doppelgänger attacks King, and despite his savage fury, he is easily fought off by King who stabs the faux-Blade in the chest with one of his own wooden daggers, sending the imitator out a window allowing Hannibal to escape. King is still fleeing from the vampire doppelgänger of Blade and their fight crashes into Dracula's party. Deacon Frost is among the crowd and he watches eagerly as this is all part of his on going plan. Furious of Blade's interruption of his party Dracula attacks and is shocked to find his long time vampire hunter foe is now a vampire himself. As the battle rages, Anton takes Domini, already visibly pregnant somewhere safe. Blade appears to have the upper hand when he stabs Dracula in the back with one of his wooden daggers. However, Dracula turns around, and mocking the fake Blade's inferior skill to the original impales the vampire doppelgänger in the chest with a stake killing him.

While investigating the murder at the hands of the Darkholders, King contacted Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. With the help of Doctor Strange, King discovered that the Darkhold contained a spell not only to create vampires but destroying them. However it is also revealed that Dracula had once again been resurrected. King along woth Blade and Frank Drake, visited Castle Mordo the home of the powerful sorcerer Baron Mordo to retrieve the Darkhold. They battled Dracula and the Darkholders, and then used the book to cast the Montesi Formula. The formula destroyed all existing vampires along with Dracula and also prevented any new vampires being created. King however was not destroyed along with the other vampires a he had never taken blood from a living person, Doctor Strange however still had to perform a complete blood transfusion for King to survive. The transfusion however returns him to a human.

Frank Drake. They formed their own investigation group called Borderline Investigations, but they were better known as the Nightstalkers.[18] With Doctor Strange, they fought the Darkholders again. They then battled them alone without the aid of theSorcerer Supreme. King later accompanied the Defenders as one of their many rotating team members. The makeshift team helped stop the plans of Minvera Bannister.

The agency discontinued after Drake left and Blade was committed to a psychiatric hospital following a battle with a temporarily resurrected Dracula. Doctor Strange later arranged the release of Blade so that he could join Drake and King in reforming Borderline Inc. as the Nightstalkers.

The mother of all demons, Lilith, hired Blade's agency to kill Ghost Rider -- the leather-clad, motorcycle-riding Spirit of Vengeance -- and bad-boy Johnny Blaze, the fiery skeleton's former host. After a protracted battle, Blade and company realized they had been duped. The team joined with Ghost Rider and Blaze against Lilith, battling her monstrous minion Meatmarket. Blade, Drake and King continued their partnership with Ghost Rider and Blaze. Along with Dr. Strange, Morbius the Living Vampire and the Darkhold Redeemers, they formed the Midnight Sons, a group dedicated to preserving the boundaries between our world and the dark realms. The Midnight Sons clashed with Lilith and her demons spawn, the Lilin, in a supernatural contest with Earth as the prize. The Midnight Sons proved victorious, destroying Lilith and her brood. Blade also rescued his close friend Safron Caulder from the Darkholders.

The Nightstalkers also battled other threats, such as Hydra's D.O.A. (Department of Occult Armaments).

King became a part time member of the Midnight Sons.

King and the team work with the Punisher (Frank Castle) to battle Shiv a dangerous cult leader. Working together they are able to stop the cult from sacrificing any more people The team battle various supernatural threats such as Stonecold and Vic Slaughter[34] along with the return of the D.O.A. They also encountered the dreaded Short Circuit teamed up with an evil alternate reality version of Hannibal King.

Blade's desire to destroy supernatural enemies led him to be tricked into using the Darkhold. As 'Switchblade' Blade attacked a number of supernatural beings and stole their power in the 'Midnight Massacre'. King and the Nightstalkers eventually stop Blade and another page of the Darkhold was used to restore things back to normal.

The worked with the Darkhold Redeemers to battle Martine Bancroft and the Lilin. Who even Doctor Strange could not help.

King and the team battle a new threat called Bad Timing began working with Lilith. The Lilin then teamed up with The Fallen.

King and Blade battle Bloodstorm a clone of Dracula and the first of a line of vampiric shock-troopers utilized by Hydra's D.O.A. He was created in a lab by Lt. Belial, but as soon as he emerged, he began slaughtering all the Hydra personnel present, including Lt. Belial at the hypnotic command of Varnae.

Upon the eventual weakening of the Montesi Formula, and the return of vampires, Blade encountered and staked a former ally, a now-vampiric Taj Nital. However, the team was unable to prevent its hated quarry, the vampire, from returning to the Earth realm. Blade, Drake and King, who again had become afflicted with vampirism, began their crusade anew to cleanse the world of all bloodsuckers. Blade and his partners clashed with dread lord Varnae-- supposedly the first vampire, the demon who had visited this hellish curse upon men. King and Drake were slain in a bloody and futile battle. The loss of his compatriots only strengthened Blade's resolve to rid the world of vampires, regardless of the circumstances of their creation. Following their victory, King was cured of his vampirism. He remained with the Nightstalkers as Blade left the team for New York.

Deacon Frost teams up with Marie LaVeau to take over mafia crime in New Orleans as a staging area for greater conquests. As Dracula lives, but is not currently acting as Lord of Vampires, Deacon captures Blade, Hannibal King, and Brother Voodoo to establish his rep among the undead in a power grab. The heroes free themselves from the trap and Blade battles Deacon Frost to a stalemate. Deacon escapes, and Blade vows to hunt him down.

King later set up a small shop in San Francisco where CIA agent Tatjana Stiles hired King to investigate the vampire Navarro, who had stolen a number of biological weapons. King was captured by Navarro and forced to feed on a live human to prevent their being turned into a vampire. King and Tatjana ultimately destroyed Navarro, but Tatjana was horribly injured. She begged King to make her a vampire in order to save her, and King gave in, taking his second human life.

Spider-Man goes undercover a to Club Jugular in an investigation into Zombie. While poorly attempting to pass as a Goth, he runs into Hannibal King and Lilith Drake. Lilith and Hannibal began fighting one another, while Pete changed into Spider-Man. As he entered the fight, Lilith tossed him through a window. Hannibal failed to obtain the amulet from her, and Lilith eventually escaped. Spider-Man and King decide to team-up to track Lilith down. King told him about the amulet, and that the Zombie is actually responsible for the recent abductions. They tracked Lilith to her lair, and resumed their fight. Lilith wanted to enslave King, and turn him into her personal vampire general. King naturally refused the offer, and succeeded in snatching the Amulet of Damballah. He then ordered the Zombie to attack Lilith. Lilith broke free, but it was clear now that her current operations in New York are hopeless. She managed to evade capture once again, just as the sun began to rise in the sky. King has the Zombie crated up and shipped to New Orleans. He traveled ahead to confer with his client, Donna Garth. Donna is the daughter of the once-human, Simon Garth. King hands her the Amulet of Damballah.

King assisted Blade in London where the latter confronted Draconis, a vampire impervious to all forms of exorcism. The two vampire hunter later battled Union Jack. Back in the US King and Blade help Spider-Man battle the criminal Fracture.[65]Blade's father Lucas Cross offered a way to restore the souls of all vampires, but in additional the effect would remove all of the vampiric weaknesses. The spell was dependent on Blade, who refused to provide invulnerability to his sworn enemy. Blade attempted to enlist King against Blade's father, but King refused, and attacked his former partner for denying him one of his greatest desires: to see the sunrise again. Blade staked King, leaving behind only a smoking stain on the cobblestones. He returned to life along with all the other vampires that Blade had killed, and Blade however decided to give him a potion that would stop him needing to feast on blood.
