Lethe

I always imagined the character looking like Helen Hunt, even 15 years ago. No idea why.

Except that I'm in love with Helen Hunt. That might be why.

LETHE, GODDESS OF FORGETFULNESS (aka Oblivio)
Role:
Minor God, Minion With An "F" In Evil
PL 8 (138)
STRENGTH
6 STAMINA 6 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 4 AWARENESS 3 PRESENCE 3

Skills:
Deception 4 (+7)
Expertise (History) 6 (+10)
Expertise (God) 4 (+8)
Insight 3 (+6)
Perception 1 (+4)
Technology 6 (+10)

Advantages:
Benefit (God)

Powers:
"Alien Anatomy- Olympian"
"Immortal"
Immunity 7 (Aging, Poison, Disease, Hot, Cold, Pressure, Vacuum) [7]
Regeneration 4 (Feats: Regrows Limbs) [5]
Immortality 2 [4]

"Olympian Size" Growth 2 (+2 Mass, +2 Intimidation, -0 Fighting/Dodge, -2 Stealth, Reach 1) -- (10 feet) (Flaws: Limited to Non-ST & STA Growths) [4]

"The Hand of Lethe" Affliction 10 (Will; Dazed/Compelled/Transformed Memories) (Feats: Precise, Subtle 2) (Extras: Continuous +3) (Flaws: Limited to Memories) [33]
"Hidden From View" Concealment 2 (Vision) [4]

Offense:
Unarmed +6 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Hand of Lethe +6 (+10 Affliction, DC 20)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +6, Fortitude +8, Will +5

Complications:
Responsibility (The Olympian Pantheon)- All Gods have a place in the Pantheon, though some jobs are more important than others. Many Gods are meant to represent "concepts" and thus be worthy of worship to mortal beings. Horcus's job is to punish those who commit perjury or swear to false oaths- which can be a rather large job in an empire this big.
Relationship (Eris- Mother)- The Goddess of Chaos is Lethe's mother, and Lethe often feels compelled or bullied into doing her mother's will.
Responsibility (Minion With An "F" In Evil)- Lethe is not evil like her siblings- she is perfectly-willing to give up plans to various people who come asking, and dislikes being made to commit evil acts.
Responsibility (Forgetful)- Lethe is prone to forgetting deep-seated plans or the events of the recent past.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 57 / Defenses: 8 (138)

Lethe in Mythology: Lethe is the daughter of Eris, and the personification of Forgetfulness, a dreadful affliction. She appears in no stories, and may be nothing more than a conceptual being- there are many more stories featuring the River Lethe, said to be the river from which the dead drank to erase their memories from life. From this we get the term "lethargic".

-Lethe is the dutiful daughter of Eris, but is not combatant, nor is she exceptionally evil. A more kind-hearted soul who means little ill will, she is generally just subserviant to the will of Eris, and is often pushed into mind-wiping people, causing them to forget oaths, friendships or even their own history, thus allowing social and legal bonds to fall apart. Athena and others have often used Lethe as their "way in" to Eris's schemes, as the Goddess has little resolve to hold her mother's secrets, and may freely give out information.

Jab's Notes: Lethe is a concept I created ages ago back in College- I kind of had it that Lethe was a forgetful, innocent sort, not really meaning any wrong. Realizing her parentage and Eris's role in my world, she seemed ideal as a "Minion With An F In Evil" concept.

Okay, and that's it for the "Children of Eris", Ares, and their affiliates. I wanted to lay out Athena's primary villains on that side of things before moving on. Eris has another child, a Famine-related one, but I don't have any idea for that one just yet. I'd imagine these are less a "Quirky Miniboss Squad" and more like the occasional manipulator that Eris can send against her "Dear Sister".

Capers:
* Through careful manipulation, and the hand of Error, Eris has Athena commit a grievous sin- the killing of a major ally of the Olympian Empire, after leading the powerful Alien Warlord towards Earth. Athena slays him in battle (with Lethe causing her to forget the man's allegiance, and Error making her act too rashly), and Queen Hera is enraged. This necessitates Athena engaging in Eighteen Labours (six more than Herakles had to do), of varying difficulty. From slaying alien monsters, to capturing the uncapturable, Athena must spend months fixing things to persuade Hera to forgive her. She must wake the Sleeping King, Endymion (who has lain at Selene's side for millennia) and more.

Meanwhile, Eris now has a free hand on Earth, with Athena's wisdom now forced elsewhere...

The Titans in Mythology: The Titans were not worshipped, even in Greek Myth. They are most-often just seen in a list of "The Twelve Titans"; those unseated by Zeus and his fellow Olympians, and their "domains" are more primal and far-reaching than the specific domains of Olympians. They represent vast concepts such as Light, Thought or The Ocean. They are mainly important to mythology because of those they birthed- their children are either important names in mythology, or the parents of important figures (including major members of the Pantheon). For example, Theia is not much of a character in myth- she's barely-mentioned, no major tales surrounding her are known to exist, and she has no observable personality. However, she is the mother of Sun, Moon & Dawn.

-The Titans are Saturn's vicious, controlling brothers and sisters, and dominated much of the Universe millennia ago. The children of Uranus (the Sky) and GAEA, they are possessed with incredible magic and high technology & programming, and are capable of growing to hundreds of feet high- they were the mightiest conquerors of the ancient world, and easily took hundreds of worlds. Many of them shared a lack of care towards humanity (and any other "lesser" race) that was legendary- they experimented on innocent people with regularity, cut down entire cities, and ruined untold civilizations on piques of fancy. When Zeus led his siblings against Saturn, half of the Titans stood with their brother- Theia, Hyperion, Coeus, Phoebe, Crius & Iapetus. Tethys (wife of Oceanus- an unrelated Ocean Spirit), Mnemosyne, Rhea, Themis and some of the Titans' children stood against their parents, or stayed neutral. As a reward for this, they were allowed to remain free and even join the Pantheon. Those who sided with Saturn were imprisoned with him within the depths of Tartarus, an inescapable dimension of agony and torment.

Jab's Notes: By far the trickiest thing to manage right when dealing with the Olympians is their history with their predecessors, the Titans. They're this unique combination of "integral to the mythos" (The Olympians defeated the Titans in order to take over domain of the Earth) but "completely uninteresting". Of the Titans, only a tiny handful actually matter to anything, or even have distinct personalities- guys like Hyperion, Theia, Crius, Iapetus and others have no importance or distinction other than to be the origin stories of other characters (Coeus & Phoebe for example birth Leto- the mother of Apollo & Artemis). Some of them have way too similar or boring names (Crios & Coeus; plus Phoebe is now just a quirky real-life name). Most people couldn't name more than a couple of Titans, at-best, and even I can't remember who's who without checking.

-This means you can't just disclude them, but if you WANT to use them... you're basically creating characters from the ground up. Phil Jiminez suffered for this when he did that "Return of Donna Troy" mini-series, as a TON of Titans showed up, but they just kind of sat around coupled-up and didn't show any distinction. Disney's "Hercules" movie just used them as Generic Stupid Giants ("Hey guys!!! Olympus is THAT way!"), mostly elementals.

-So what I wanted to do was give them some distinction. Make them MUCH larger than any Olympians, give them primal powers to represent their domains, and create a few unique "looks" to prevent the "good-looking people in robes" cliche.

Really like this one. Sells the whole "hi-tech alien" thing a lot more than the other pics, where she looks fairly typical of most comic book/superhero versions of the goddess.
Enemy (Poseidon)- Poseidon and Athena have feuded ever since she won the responsibility of being the favored God of the city of Athens. The proud Sea God frequently attempts to undo her schemes, or see her humiliated.
Enemy (Triton)- Triton is the son of Poseidon, and is usually the hand Poseidon deals when he wishes to interfer with Athena's life. He is also the father of Pallas, the girl Athena once slew in mock-battle.
Ooooo, I like this. Outside of "The Odyssey," Poseidon doesn't really get a huge amount of focus in most adaptations, so he's just kinda "there." I think the Percy Jackson adaptations are the most focus he's ever gotten that I can think of, being the father of the protagonist. I also like the idea of him being a villain here, and it's nice to see him get a bit more focus in that capacity. Triton is also neat as a baddie, especially since the Disney version has set the character up as this sort of Zeus-type figure in the eyes of most who are aware of him.
Athena- Not So Perfect:
Really like that you kept a lot of her past negative actions and flaws instead of sanitizing her. Helps humanize her a bit and make it clear that, for all her power and godhood, she really isn't that far above humanity. Also gives her a bit of a character arc, letting her confront her past actions against what she is becoming now.

Yeah, I didn't want to go with the whole "Athena- Goddess of Good" thing, because most of the Olympians have moments of incredible arrogance- many tales were built off of punishment for hubris, and Athena was no different.

Hyperion in Mythology: The "High One" representing the Sun, bequeathed to his son Helios. He represents wisdom and the light, as well as watchfulness. Largely-obscure, despite his popular name- he mainly appears in the mythology as part of a list of Titans.

-Theia & Hyperion are the parents of Helios (The Sun), Selene (The Moon) and Eos (The Dawn)- they represent Brightness and the Heavens. Hyperion is highly-intelligent and wise, and Theia can see all across the world- they used their gifts in alliance with Saturn, and nearly scoured the Universe. Their brutality horrified even their children, who bravely opposed their parents, and were allowed to join the Olympian Pantheon. They were haughty and incredibly-destructive. Hyperion, in fact, is better known by the name the Norse & Asgardians called him: Surtur- he who would burn the world to ash.

-Hyperion's mission was often genocidal- those who displeased or crossed the Titans would have their worlds extinguished, burned in the eternal fire. He is among the more destructive, impersonal, and dangerous Titans- one who cares little for any being below himself. He revels in his might, and laughs at the plight of mortals. Though he seeks power and respect, he does not take the leadership reins of the Titans when Saturn is not present- he lacks the wit or wisdom of the others.

Jab's Notes: Hyperion has the most famous name of the subordinate Titans, but isn't much of a character. Taking the concept of a Primordial Sun-God, I turned him into the Titans' muscle and destroyer. This also made him comparable to Surtur, so I came up with the idea to have them both be the same being.

Theia in Mythology: The "Wide-Shining" Goddess of the bright sky, symoblizing brightness and sight (the Greeks believed that eyes shone a light that allowed them to see things- Theia represented this light). Also represents the Moon, as bequeathed to her daughter Selene. Theia is similar in mythology to many other "Mother of the Sun God" figures such as Leto (mother of Apollo), but does not appear to ever have been worshipped.

-Theia possesses the power to see virtually anywhere in the universe. Nearly as dangerous in battle as Hyperion, she rarely utilizes this, favoring intimidation. Her manner is actually rather flirtatious and manipulative when dealing with mortals, complimenting their looks, drawing nearer to them, or suggesting they can win her favor... but she is no Aphrodite, and not a seductress. Her manner is sheer intimidation- she rarely exits the massive size of a Titan when behaving in this manner, and gives off an air of insincerity, thus it comes off as extremely threatening and forceful- she essentially bullies and browbeats others into doing her bidding, smiling all the while as she does so. A favorite tactic is to send people on "Macguffin Hunts" for worthless items she chooses to suggest are important- the more dangerous the quest, the more fun she'll have watching them from afar.

-When called to do so, she will render entire worlds desolate alongside her husband- to her, the lives of mortals are meaningless aside from the momentary pleasures she gets frightening or manipulating them- she'll simply find other playthings on another world.

Jab's Notes: Female Titans are particularly tricky, because they have even less character than the males. All Theia is is "Brightness". I drew up another lady with flame-hair, similar to my villainess Fatal Flare, and kind of came to a realization that this slimmer, taller Goddess actually looked more like Eris from the "Sinbad" animated movie. This made me revamp the character into her pseudo-Femme Fatale personality, where she kind of flirts, but in the way an animal would play with its prey. This, and her "Fetch Quest" trickery, makes her one of the more fun Titans.

Ok, interesting look. The braids/pigtails give him a kind of primitive appearance that fits the way you've described this version of the character. The big banner in the back's an interesting touch.

Love me some shapeshifting weapons.
Relationship (Earthlings)- Ares loves humanity as much as any God- not due to their innate goodness, but because of their capacity for bloodshed. In humanity, Ares sees kindred spirits.
I really like this bit, being a villain who loves humanity and what they represent. I don't see too much of that elsewhere.
-In modern times, Ares came to become a powerful ally of many of the world's most-vicious empires. He fought alongside the Muslim Empires as they covered the Middle East, Africa & Asia. When the Popes declared the Crusades, Ares joined them. He joined the Nazis as they strode across Europe, and fought for Japan in Asia, then switched sides after Midway, allowing himself the joy of cutting down his former allies in droves- delighting in how the Japanese refused to surrender to him.

-Ares holds no true allegiances for long- as his history suggests, he joins whichever army is winning, which is the one that lets him do the most damage (defenders rarely get to do as much killing), emblazoning their logos or flag symbols on a sashimono-like placard on his back.
Okay, I really like this kinda/sorta/not really "face heel turn" type thing. That he essentially sides with the side that is either winning or most like him puts a major point on the greyness of war, and how sometimes there's not really a good or bad side, just an aggressor or defender. Like, if Ares ends up siding with the heroes? That should be a big deal.

Yeah, with Ares, I wanted to do a thing like I did with Lord Tiburon, where there's this cynical "Hey, you humans are JUST AS VICIOUS AS US!!" So it's not this Elf-like race of beings looking down on us for sucking- it's an alien being who LOVES US because we're just as scummy.

Hey, that's a cool idea. There's a handful of enemies that Ares WOULD ally with the heroes against, but what if it was a lesser threat? They'd be pretty creeped out at the idea.

Complications:
Responsibility (Olympian Pride)- All Olympians are a bit prideful. Titans even moreso- their tremendous size makes them highly-arrogant as well.
Motivation (Science!)- Coeus seeks to unlock the secrets of the universe- immortal and ageless, he's had nothing but time, but still maintains the thirst for knowledge. His experiments are thoughtless, cruel and appear insane to others.

Coeus in Mythology: Possibly a Titanian God of Intellect, as his name means "Query/Questioning". He later broke free of confinement in Tartarus thanks to being overcome with madness, but was forced back by Cerberus.

-Titans of the Mind, Coeus & Phoebe were the most intelligent of Saturn's allies, and maintained a status as his advisors. They performed cruel experiments upon humanity (and numerous other races), and coldly watched the aftereffects- Coeus in particular is known as a universally-hated experimenter, known for wiping out entire worlds in the name of scientific progress and discovery- imagine Mengele multiplied by a factor of thousands. His acts include combining sentient beings into horrible combinations, testing the limits of freezing, burning or sheer pain on living creatures, forming new kinds of diseases, and more- millions have died in his slave pens. Coeus & Phoebe are the parents of Leto & Asteria- Leto is the mother of Apollo and Artemis by Zeus, and Asteria the mother of Hecate- they represent Intelligence and Thought.

Jab's Notes: Most of these guys are "Walking Genocide", so I figured I'd make one more of an intellectual threat. The idea of a gigantic, 400-foot-tall Killer Cyborg who performs horrifying experiments upon living beings is one I think is totally unique.

Divine Offspring:
With Phoebe- Leto (mother of Apollo & Artemis) and Asteria (mother of Hecate)

Phoebe in Mythology: A prophetic Goddess of Wisdom- her grandson Apollo sometimes bears the title "Phoebus". "Phoebe" literally means "Brightness/Prophetic" in Greek.

-Phoebe is as cruel as her mechanical husband Coeus- a vicious creature that revels in controlling the minds of lesser beings (translation: everyone). A telepath of great power, she is one of the most powerful Psykers in creation. She bore Coeus the peaceful Leto (a disappointment to both, though a capable administrator), then created the vastly-powerful technological creation Asteria- a sentient Starship (given "flesh" by Coeus, and mind by Phoebe).

Jab's Notes: Phoebe has a pretty generic name these days, so I wanted to go with something a bit "weird". Being a "Titaness of Wisdom" could mean a lot of things, so I went with Mind Control, because nobody else had really owned that one yet, and Coeus already had "Genius" as his domain. For the design, I wanted a creepy, single-expression look, but on a lady that was still attractive. This gives her a cold, icy demeanor despite the "smile" on her mask.

Crius in Mythology: The "least-individualized" of the Titans, possibly a retcon added by the writer Hesiod (from the traditions at Delphi) in order to make twelve Titans (yes, the greatest of the Greek theologions included RETCONS). His consort was Eurybia, a mere Sea Nymph. Crius & Euribya birth Astraios, Pallas, and Perses (God of Destruction). He is sometimes thought of as the God of Constellations, and his name is associated with rams. Astraios birthed The Four Winds and The Five Wandering Stars.

-Weaker than most of his siblings, and without a registered "domain" thanks to his background role compared to most of his siblings, Crius was nonetheless instrumental in the takeover of portions of the Universe, with his incredible knowledge of the stars and constellations. He was the most similar in appearance to his father Uranos, possessing a body that looked like a star-field, and elongated horns. Intelligent and wise, he was less impulsive than the others, and made up for his lack of genocidal nature with a cold, calculating presence.

-Despite his more reasonable nature, he was still betrayed by his children, who joined with the Olympians in overthrowing the Titans. Astraeos, Pallas & Perses went on to become minor agents in the Olympian Pantheon, leaving their parents to rot in Tartarus.

Divine Offspring:
With Eurybia- Astraeos (God of Astrology), Pallas (Spear-Bearer), Perses (God of Force)

Eurybia in Mythology: Eurybia "has a heart of flint within her", and is known for pretty much nothing other than being the mother of Astraeus, Perses & Pallas- all minor Gods. She was not a child of Ouranous- unlike the others, she was the child of Pontus (the sea) and Gaea.

-Eurybia is not a famous Titan, but was as dangerous as Hyperion & Theia. Despite her more humble origins (she is not the daughter of Uranos, but the child of GAEA and Pontus- a child of Oceanus), she was transformed into among the mightiest of Titans upon her nupitals to Crius, whom she actually appears to love. The Titan of the "Wide-Force", she was given domain over the seas and weather. With her raw might over the elements, she can transform entire worlds in a matter of days, destroying cities, wiping out civilizations, and ruining the earth millennia.

Jab's Notes: Some of these guys get a bit tricky to figure out, but I just married "Storm + Titan" to each other and came up with someone who'd be EXTREMELY dangerous.

Divine Offspring:

Like what you did with these guys in terms of designing them- Phobos' lion-maned helmet brings to mind Jason Vorhees or Casey Jones with the hockey mask look, and I think it would make sense if he was a lot like a battlefield version of Jason.

I also like how Deimos has this sort of Jack Kirby-esque Space God look to him, which helps distinguish him visually from his brother- there's also a bit of the Space Kook from Scooby Doo in there, one of the most genuinely scary villains from that show.
