The games themselves are a blast, and I always make sure to be 100% clear that this was Neo-Paladin`s idea/ setting that I simply compiled.

Since I was the one most frequently editing, it sort of fell to me to post on the old forums so that it could be updated regularly and coherently... I transferred it all here "just in case."

Character Creation:

Since this is a campaign setting, I figured I`d put the character creation rules up for simplicity...

The Merge - Initial/ Earth Bound Setting
:!: PL is 11, with 165 pp. You can trade up and down 1 PL for 15 pp. PL 12 would be at 150 pp, PL 10 at 180 pp.
:!: Each rank of Presence nets you a social advantage.
:!: Skill Points are 1/3 pp.

Cosmic Merge
:!: PL will be 12, 180 pp, with the option of trade-off. PL 11 would be 195, PL 13 165 pp.
:!: PRE gives you 1 additional social-related advantage per point.
:!: Base Will save is PRE+AWE
:!: Skills Points are 1/3 pp.

Agents and Powers
:!: PL 7/105 pp with the option to trade-off. PL 8/ 90 pp, PL 6 / 120 pp.
:!: PRE gives you 1 additional social-related advantage per rank.
:!: Skill Points. Are 1/3 pp.

The Merge: Tales of London
:!: PL 10, 180 PP.
:!: 1 PP gives you three skill ranks instead of two.
:!: Each rank of Presence gives you one free rank of any interaction advantage (Attractive, Animal Empathy, Beautiful Voice (see below), Cult Hero (see below), Daze, Fascinate, Inspire, Second Chance (must be applied to Deception, Intimidation or Persuasion if gained this way), Startle and Taunt).
:!: New Advantages Available: Beautiful Voice (Max 2 Ranks): As Attractive, but it's based on your voice instead of your appearance. Someone who's blind is immune to Attractive* (they really can't see what the fuss is about), but can be affected by Beautiful Voice. Modifiers from Attractive and Beautiful Voice do not stack.
:!: Benefit: Dual Citizen: For one reason or another, you are legally recognised as a full and otherwise rightful citizen of two separate and sovereign nations, allowing you to travel (visa-free) to, live and even work and vote (if available) in those two countries. Not all countries allow dual citizenship, and some governments place specific restrictions on dual citizens (usually in the form of not being allowed to run for office).
:!: Cult Hero (Max 2 Ranks): Choose a subculture your character is strongly associated with. At 1 rank, you're respected and well-known enough by members of that subculture to get +2 on Persuasion and Deception-based rolls when dealing with them. You also get a -2 penalty when using those skills against someone who opposes or works against that subculture. 2 ranks sets the modifier to +/-5. You can take this advantage more than once to represent being a Cult Hero in multiple subcultures. Bonuses gained from multiple instances of Cult Hero do not stack.

A Note About Minions
:!: Regardless of game, Minions are created using the same rules as above.
:!: They use the same PL trade-offs available to PCs. Rank in Minions or Summon is the PL divided by 15, regardless of the minion's PL.
:!: A Minion (regardless of source or total actual PP) cannot be higher in PL than the character that "owns" it.

Multiple Iterations of the Same Character
Reposted from the intro post.

Ever played video games where you can fight your clone, but its not a clone? And there's no other in-game explanation for you to fight yourself? Well, in the Merge, it is known that multiple iterations of some characters have crossed over. For instance, there are at least six Batmen in contact with Oracle... There are at least two versions of Kara Zor-El, and they are completely different from each other... So if someone is playing your favourite character... feel free to pitch another version.

Note that it's not likely two of the same character would be chosen to play in the same game at the same time, but you never know...

Benefits that aren't anymore...
:!: In many cases, the Rank and privilege of a character did not transfer over. Phil Coulson is an Agent of Homeland Security and no longer a high ranking SHIELD operative. The benefit of being a Jedi Temple Guard may mean something the group forming in Australia but really means nothing outside that area. Likewise military rank needs to be vetted and security clearance given all over again. All to say, you may bring someone who was a big deal in their universe, but many people are on equal footing now where they never would have been before...

Complications
It's worth noting that Complications require a little more thought in some cases.

:!: Secret Identity: For Earth-bound campaigns, for instance, Secret Identities are mostly out the window. When a trip to the local comic shop or bookstore and a simple google search can give you the entire history of a character, knowing dark secrets, strengths and weaknesses makes the complication fairly worthless. (However, see below for "one offs and alternate realities.")
:!: Earth Prime Counterpart: For characters that came from universes where their version of a character is from a TV show, there is often an actor or actress out there with the same face, voice and who is able to "mimic" the mannerisms of the character. The character may feel kinship or other sense of obligation to this person. At least one character has developed a friendship with their counterpart...
:!: Prejudice: Being an alternate reality counterpart - especially a good version of an "evil" character can cause many individuals to have preconceived notions about your character... Imagine Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Master, showing up...

One Offs and Alternate Realities
:!: The Multiverse. Variant versions of our heroes. Some good, some bad, some just slightly different. The character Nightwing, for instance, is from a combined universe and bears a lot in common with Spider Gwen in terms of powers but wears the Thrillkiller Batgirl costume... this gives her an edge as there is no literature on her...
:!: Many such alternates aren't as far off though... Red Rain Batman, Speeding Bullets Superman... they may be out there...

Reboot: ("Non Canon")

The Reboot Mythos is listed as non-canon as Neo Paladin has not "approved" it. It's simply something I am toying with.

Despite their universe being set inside a computer, characters from the CGI series Reboot have appeared as part of the Merge. Notably Enzo Matrix, Frisket, AndrAIa, Mouse and Ray Tracer. These beings have appeared "in real life" and are not hidden on someone's hard drive...

They are proficient in computer use for the most part, but like their television counterparts they are mostly ordinary people with the notable exception of the Reboot ability. Their computer based vital statistics and rebooting ability has transferred over, with the Reboot being tied to scenarios as opposed to games. For instance, once per scenario, they can reboot to make their forms compatible and competitive – facing werewolves might give them silver based blades for instance. Sometimes there are cosmetic changes as well that don`t provide benefits. (They do have a number of immunities that activate when they reboot though.)

The area they call the Net is what the RAW refer to as cyberspace. Any Sprite from the Reboot series can survive there with their standard abilities and by rebooting as necessary. They can travel there via portals (Dimensional Travel) that are often first manifested by a "tear." A Tear can be sealed by a Key Tool and often manifest in conjunction with malfunctioning computer networks - a power surge that shorts out a server, computer or even cellular network might form a tear...

The area that they called the Web is actually what the comic world refers to as the Bleed, the Phlogiston, the Dreaming and other similar in-between states of various dimensions. Although mechanically, the Reboot command gives them appropriate immunities, in practice (i.e. via descriptor) only specific formatting allows sprites to exist in these areas unaided (i.e. on appropriately protected ships, or with appropriate descriptors at character creation.)

No game has yet manifested in this realm as of yet, it is assumed that if it were to happen and no one was there to defeat the User, then the section of whatever city it appeared in would be destroyed just as in the show. It`s possible that several of the "accidents" and "tragedies" that have occurred around the world are actually post game effects, but there is no one to corroborate this.

Re: The Merge Universe

Post by Bladewind »

Made some additions to the main posts of the setting:

 Was feeling egotistical and added my Merge Inspired characters to the lists of PCs...
 Added the following bits (without Neo Paladin's input...)

Known Characters to have crossed over/ appeared:

Aphrodite A The female counterpart to Tranzor Z, Aphrodite A is likewise ready for duty. Sayaka Yumi stands by Koji Kabuto...

Goldorak Based somewhere between Quebec City and Montreal, this is the French Canadian version of Grendizer. Exactly how much of the mythos transferred/ merged beyond the pilot, the massive mecha and it's flight unit is unknown. The giant mecha is grounded as much as possible given the potential for collateral damage and the relative lack of massive enemies that it needs to face.

Mara Jade: With the imminent arrival on Earth of Emperor Palpatine for a summit and discussion, Mara Jade was sent ahead in a Sith Infiltrator, Mara's Saber. The cloaked starship carried her to Earth and she is pursuing an agenda only she and the Emperor are aware of. If discovered, her cover is that she is acting under the orders of Master Skywalker... just truthful enough to get her by...

Mazinger/ Tranzor Z Much like Goldorak (See above) it's not known how much of the mythos surrounding this character appeared. The American version of the pilot, Tommy Davis, is known to Homeland Security as is his sister, Jessica. They are hoping to secure the location of the Island of Bardos (assuming it has also Merged...) before anyone else can. Tommy is not the pilot of Mazinger/ Tranzor Z, instead the Japanese version of the character (Koji Kabuto) is at the helm. Mazinger, like Goldorak, is grounded as much as possible at this time.

Voltron The lions appear to have transferred over in the Merge. At this time, only one has been discovered. The Blue Lion is currently docked on Atlantis and it appears John Sheppard is bonded as its pilot. The Yellow Lion is on Earth, but has yet to be discovered. The other lions may or may not be on Earth... No indications of the Drule, Robeasts or anything along those lines has manifested. The same holds true for any incarnation of the Voltron Force themselves...

Locations of note:

Atlantis: Stargate As the Merge began, Atlantis had just destroyed a Wraith Hive in orbit. While re-entering, the city appeared on the Merged Earth and is currently undergoing repairs. It rests in San Fransisco Bay. The team standing looking out at the bay in the series finale, along with the entire crew/ expedition transferred. Samantha Carter was also on board (See SGC, below)

Island of Bardos Remains of a pre-Greco civilization and the seat of the Mycenean Empire. Contains the remains of steel titans and is a source of the metal Super Alloy Z and its raw form of Japanium. While damaged beyond repair or use, these robots could be used as a template for new robots of mass destruction... Its location is currently undiscovered.

Stargate Command (SGC) With Atlantis, Stargate Command and a Stargate appeared. It has been established that a large network of gates also exists. Samantha Carter was requested by Homeland Security to become joint commander of the base. Stargate Teams are being established to determine what is out there from the Stargate franchise.

Hey, I'll be adding my own Merge inspired characters and we'll probably need some write ups on Element Bending and how it fits in with the rest of the world.

Also, did Power Rangers/VR Troopers/Tron get thrown into the Merge as well? With the thing about Reboot, that got me wondering...

As far as I'm concerned, go for it. I'm sure NeoPaladin will say if something steps too far out of line with his vision for the Merge.

For characters, PM me links, and I'll add them to their own section in the character list post... for the rest, post away (being a tad anal, I'd ask that you keep my format for headers and the like...) and I'll add to the contents post...

Physics and Technological Interation: Non Canon

More of my ramblings that are not officially endorsed by NeoPaladin....

Many technologies from various fiction sources are incompatible with each other, at least at the outset. Jury-rigging, adapters and other links must be built for them to work together, even if at their base they work on the same principals.

In other cases, technology is very similar from one origin story to the other. Balmeran crystals, Kyber crystals and the housing for a ZPM, for instance, have all been found to be very similar (or will be...). The technology of Atlantis, were it to be analyzed in conjunction with the Castle of Lions, would note many similarities between the tech of the Ancients and the tech of the planet Altea. In fact, the ATA Gene from the Stargate mythos is actually a common thread throughout what was the multiverse.

Further, contrary to what was portrayed in comics in at least one source, like materials and elements all have a common thread. For instance, Kryptonite affects virtually all Kryptonians. There is no unique energy signature specific to an individual Kryptonian's version of their homeworld that will only affect a specific set of Kryptonians. Synthetic K and exceptions occur, but for the most part with three versions of Kara Zor-El standing next to each other and a pound of green K, they'll all be injured.

The most adapt at bridging the gap between different and incompatible tech is the Federation and their Corps of Engineers. Others are able, but their is something about that particular set of Engineers that enable them to use parts from different levels of technology work together.

Thankfully, some tech has yet to meet up, at least not yet. Many on Earth fear what might happen if the Borg encounter the Replicators.

All of this to say, that as the Merge has brought many disparate universes together, and at their core, many of these places have much more in common with each other than would appear.

Note that the setting now exists in PDF format, all entries from here copied therein. It can be found here.

Mostly just a copy and paste without links of what's found here with a simple cover page. Not that I expect anyone to print it, but it's formatted for recto-verso printing, so there are odd blank pages scattered throughout...
