Re-reading the death of Aegis, I thought it was not necessary (he was a guy from a failed book, but that doesn't mean you throw him away), but it was handled well, as his death was tragic, he was mourned (and Cho was upset when Athena was cold about it), and he acted as Cho's guide in the afterlife. It was the most use he'd seen in years.

Typhon in Mythology: Typhon is supposed to be the greatest of all monsters in Greek Mythology- created by Gaea to slay the Olympians and return the Titans to power. Looking like he was created by a committee of children, he had snakes for arms and legs, and was as big as a mountain, and he attacked Olympus, sending all the Gods scurrying to Egypt in animal form. Only Athena retained her form, and shamed Zeus into standing up to the monster. The resulting battle was huge, and Zeus ended up burying him beneath a Mountain, which soon became the volcanic Mount Etna. He is said to be, with Echidna, the parent of various Greek monsters such as the Chimera.

-Typhon appeared early-on in Marvel Comis during the Roy Thomas years of Avengers (man, it's really clear that Thomas was the one guy in this era who'd actually READ the original stories)- as he's pretty much the all-time Big Bad of Greek Mythology, this role suits him quite nicely. In his first appearance, he casts the people of Mount Olympus into "The Land of Shades" and fights Hercules, casting him into that realm as well, then invading Earth. Typhon attacks the Avengers, but Hercules (who was a Demigod, and thus the "Transportation Spell" wasn't as effective) returns with Zeus, and defeated the villain. He returns with a woman named Cylla, who loved him, but he failed to stop Herc this time as well. He returned in The Champions, making a deal with Pluto (his jailer) to let him free in exchange for bringing Hercules to the Underworld- he kidnapped The Beast in order to force Iron Man to attack Herc, but the heroes again prevailed.

-Later, he allies with Loki and some other Greek monsters, mind-wipes Herc with the River Lethe, and they move against Olympus. The Avengers save the day when Cap returns Herc's memories. Years later, he was shown in Hera's employ (and her bed!) in The Incredible Hercules, where he held Herc off in all the big fights. Eventually, he used the Aegis Shield to betray Hera, killing both her & Kid Zeus, setting off another adventure, though Hercules was able to mind-wipe him using Amadeus Cho's bottle of River Lethe ("Forgetfulness") water, then bash his brains in using his Adamantine Mace. Thus endeth the threat of Typhon.

-A supreme Powerhouse, Typhon can hold off an entire team at once, and he's generally better than even Hercules in a fight- at PL 14.5 Unarmed and PL 14 Defensively, he upgrades to a PL 15 with the Axe, and is generally superior to PL 13 Herc, and even Thor. His physical might and durability makes him a BITCH to injure, though Herc finally kills him with several blows from a +18 weapon (and that's AFTER Typhon broke Herc's left arm and leg). Oddly enough, he appears weaker in the earlier tales, usually losing to Hercules in fair fights.

-In the final battle, he used the Aegis Shield, which in this case offered up:

"Aegis Shield" (Flaws: Removable) [47]
Immunity 20 (Energy Damage) (20)
Protection 2 (Extras: Reflective on 18 Ranks +2) (38)
-- (58 points)

-This basically let him throw ANY kind of attack back at the disher-outer, making him nearly invincible.

Jabroniville wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:38 pm Arachne in Mythology: Arachne is presented as a story about hubris by some, and the Gods' jealousy and hair-trigger tempers by others. A mortal woman who bragged that her tapestries were the greatest of all time, Arachne proclaimed herself better than the Goddess of Weaving herself, Athena. This act of hubris was viewed as tantamount to blasphemy by the Greeks (many cultures though this way- think about what Old Testament God would've done there), and so Athena came down to challenge her. Arachne's tapestry was about the various flaws (sexual and otherwise) of the Gods, and Athena beat the snot out of her. Committing suicide, Arachne hung from a rope, but Athena's pity for the now-dead girl caused her to become an immortal weaver- the very first Spider. Ovid says Athena did that out of punishment, however. You get multiple sides on this one.
Alot of the myths are have variations, a common one for Arachne is that far from losing to Athena she beat her and was turned into a spider out of spite by the godess.

Born lame (i.e. his leg is all gimped-up), he was cast out of Olympus by his cruel mother, Hera (some legends indicate that the casting-out led to his lameness),
For those that are interested those would be the myths where Hera deliberately dropped him from Olympus to spite Zeus (he had been cheating again), causing the infant to smash into the island of Lemnos crippling him, which then led to the tale where he imprisoned Hera on her throne as punishment until the gods bribe him into releasing her in return for Aphrodite's hand in marriage

Yup- and in another tale, Zeus forced Aphrodite to marry loyal Hephaestus simply to keep the other Gods from going to war over who got to marry the Goddess of Hotness.

Hercules: Fall of an Avenger:
- This is where things get weird. With Herc dead, his book in cancelled, which instead turns into a 2-part "Funeral" story, then a 4-issue "Prince of Power" series with Cho. The heroes have a funeral for the guy (while Namora & Venus tell all of Hercules' past lovers about his death- this takes a while), each one remembering him in their own way. You could ask why they hold a funeral storyline for a guy who will be returning in six months, but I guess it's a good way to sum up a big character before the big Event Story. Some of it's pretty funny (especially the Dark Elf Queen's description of "The Elven Tickler", complete with Namor starting with his mouth wide open in horror, or when Northstar quickly excuses himself during a roll-call of Herc's lovers), but I get a bit lost when they just start having Athena act like a jerk IMMEDIATELY, throwing everyone out of her temple and raving like a maniac. THAT'S her plan? To make all the heroes & Cho hate her?

-Apollo finally rears his head, insisting that HE should be the new Skyfather, threatening that his flames could destroy the Earth (yeah, right...). He & Athena forge a contest, with their allies throwing champions into the fight lest their battle kill everyone- Apollo (Phobos, the son of Ares), Artemis (Skaar, a great Hunter & Son of the Hulk) and Nyx (Nightmare... because this random, rarely-seen Goddess is powerful enough to do THAT) take on Athena (Cho), Poseidon (Namor) & Hebe (Bruce Banner in a Gadget-Guy Format). The fight's over in a hurry, as after a quick brawl (Cho starts becoming more and more over-the-top great with each appearance, taking out Nightmare in seconds with a Bag of Holding) the heroes just ally and beat the snot out of Apollo. See, this is why that character is tough to judge in Marvel- I've read exactly THREE appearances of the guy, and in EACH ONE, he's getting his ass handed to him by people!! First Zeus does it in the '80s Avengers issue, then Hera does it to start off the "Olympus Group" story, then the heroes do it here- guy is like Rodney Dangerfield in terms of respect given (ie. he don't get none).

-Amadeus threatens Pluto to allow him into Hades to get Herc out (Phobos threatens him with images of coloured ponies and candy), but Herc isn't actually there, as Persephone notes.

-This turns into Prince of Power, as Amadeus tries to attain Godhood to bring Hercules back, but he's confounded by some guy named Vali Halfling, who is Loki's son and a member of the Hulk's Pantheon from way back (I've never heard of him, but I guess he's Agamemnon's true self). The "Mary Sue" aspects of Cho, always dangerously close to the surface (what with the obvious Writer Insert Fic mentality, super-skillz and the hot girlfriend), start getting worse, as he uses Herc's Mace to become an ass-kicker instead of just a smart guy- Mary Sues are fine in moderation and when they're clever, but Cho is just getting more and more big-time and it's rather annoying.

-It ends up being Cho & Thor teaming up (who is a much more annoyed aide to the little bastard- Cho treats him really disrespectfully here) to find the Four Mythical Macguffins that turn the user into a God, and they brawl with the Egyptian Goddess of War & Love (hey- another one! The Babylonians weren't the only ones!) Sekhmet. A quickie-roofie turns her into Hathor, Goddess of Love (complete with LOLcats speech patterns, which either amuses or annoys everyone who reads this... and most certainly will be inexplicable to anyone reading this twenty years down the line- "oh, so in the 2000s, a website was created that used cat pictures and oddly-phonetic English writing patterns mixed with recent internet slang in order to..."). Delphyne Gorgon makes a comeback (and her & Cho finally hook up for realz) so she can help trounce Halfling (who was a step ahead of Cho at each turn, only failing at the end). Cho uses temporary Godhood to bring Herc back from his exile in the Continuum Land of Monsters and junk.

Yep I have read that one as well. I always like myths, personally i always favour the ones involving the greek gods that depict them as the largest bunch of egotistical self-absorbed dumb asses possible, as they seem more acurate and more in keeping with the bulk of the stories involving them. Thus ones that depict gods/godesses more benign to humans just seem out of place, Athena is a good example of this as most of the tales involving her have more than one version, its just that the most common ones originate at Athens (her patron city) and were some of best preserved and first translated by historians

Interesting note about the Marvel Persephone (Well I find it interesting anyway) despite the way in which she and Hades were married she shows no hint of being a victim or that she wants to be 'rescued', she's portrayed as being in a traditional married relationship with Hades and seems to enjoy her role as queen of the underworld.

Exactly. No one really cared when Aegis died, because no one really cared when Aegis was alive. This being comic books, it wouldn't take much to bring him back, either, if someone ever felt the urge. Not that anyone ever will.

Compare that to James Rhodes, a very popular character (albeit more as supporting cast than superhero), who was sacrificed at the altar of "summer event comics" and totally fridged to motivate both Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Rhodey, I have no doubt, will find some way to return.

That's kind of an interesting observation since in many ways he's just that. In his examination of the Norse mythology, J.R.R. Tolkien noted how it's pretty much the only mythology where the big showdown between gods and monsters is yet to come, opposite to the Greek mythology where this war is over and the gods won. Just like Surtur, Typhon is pretty much an elemental force made manifest, a relic of the time before the gods (being the child of Gaea) that doesn't answer to the order they imposed on the world. The big difference is that Surtur is a danger yet to come, he's the return to the primordial chaos, whereas Typhon is more of a vengeage of the old order against the new.

I kind of fear that moment. I've been a big fan of Rhodey for a long time and I hate the way he was offed just to start a terrible summer event where (like pretty much every event over the last 10 years) a lot of character seemed way to eager to take the idiot/villain ball, but I kind of fear what would come. One thing I learned over the years is that coming back from the dead is tricky as hell because we - the audience - got callous about it. Killing a well-established character should be a major deal (unless you're John Wagner, who offed Judge Giant pretty casually before a major event just to highlight how dangerous Mega City One is; or George Martin because reasons) with lasting consequences and ramifications. Sacrificing one over a one-shot event is like fishing with grenades: doable, but utterly pointless most of the time.

Argos in Mythology: Argos Panoptes (The "All-Seeing", often depicted with hundreds of eyes) was Hera's personal warrior in Greek Mythology, a Giant devoted to doing her bidding. He was sent to kill the monstress Echidna, as well as protect the heifer (actually a disguised Nymph and paramour of Zeus) Io from The King of the Gods' advances- in response to this, Zeus had him slain by Hermes. In deference to him, Hera placed his multitude of eyes in the tail of the Peacock.

-Argos is really minor in the scheme of Greek Myth (I've never even heard of him until this story arc of "Hercules"), but got to show up as part of Hera's "Injustice Gang" assortment of guys to fight The Mighty Avengers, squaring off against Hank Pym. The best part was watching Pym "blind" him in his normal eyes using a Sting, only for Argos to scream "NOOOO MY EYES!! I've only got NINETY-EIGHT MORE HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" and whup Pym's ass. Pym ass-beatings are always good for the soul. That was it for him, though- he was last seen in the "wrap-up" fighting as Herc was doing battle with Typhon, getting Venom Blasted by Spider-Woman on Amadeus Cho's specified directed tactics.

-Argos is a tidy little PL 10 Giant character, stuck at his huge size. Most unique (and fun) about him are his multitude of Super-Senses, leaving him with an insane amount of Vision- he can pick out tiny things, far-away things, Concealment effects (Hermes only killed him in myth by putting all his eyes to sleep), things behind him, etc. It's a bunch of powers I rarely get to use or even look through, so that's cool.

Hermes in Mythology:
Hermes is an interesting God, in that he's usually just a "Messenger" in most pop-cultural representations of the Gods, but he's a little hell-raiser and troublemaker in the mythology. His acts as an infant include ripping off older half-brother Apollo of his beloved cattle, only to talk his way out of punishment by offering up the Lyre (which he invented using a turtle-shell), impressing his bro significantly. Hermes ended up being the God of a LOT of stuff- his semi-chaotic nature meant that he was all over the place, and ended up being a God of Luck, Trade, Thievery, B.S.ing, Astrology, etc. He got up to a lot of hanky-panky (but unlike Zeus, was never married, so he's less of a pig for it), siring a truly Jovian number of children.

-Hermes doesn't show up much in Marvel Comics- he fights Makkari of The Eternals once, and gathered the Young Gods on behalf of Gaea and other Goddesses. Typically, all he does is deliver personal messages from Zeus and other Gods.
-Hermes is a terrifying mix of Speedster, Skillmonkey and Powerhouse, meaning that he ends up over THOR's overall price point, despite being much less of a fighter. He's the God of Thieves and Liars in addition to being among the fastest people in the history of Marvel Earth (he makes Quicksilver look lead-footed), which means that he can punch everyone in range, bluff like nobody else, and traverse half the planet at ultra-fast speed. He has so many Godly Domains that I gave him an extra Skill thing for it.

Godly Offspring:
With Unknown: Angelia (Goddess of Messages), Palaistria (Goddess of Wrestling)
With Daiera: Eleusis (Goddess of the Eleusinian Mysteries)
With Aphrodite: Hermaphroditus (where'd ya THINK the name came from? God of Effeminancy)
With Oreadic Nymphs: Oreads (aka Dryads- Nymphs of Trees)
With Penelope (Nymph): Pan (God of Shepherds), Nomios (Another Pan-like thing)
With Sose (Nymph) Agreus (another Pan)
Iphthime (Nymph): The Satyroi- Pherespondos, Lykos & Pronomos (Messenger Satyrs)
With Kione (Mortal): Autolycus (Mortal King of Thieves- as played by Bruce Campbell in "Xena" & "Hercules")

Re: Jab's Builds! (Cho! Delphyne Gorgon! Nyx! Apollo! Athena! Zeus!)

Any time I hear or read someone using their take on mythology, I just tell them "you're right!" because really, they kinda are :). If there's one thing medieval scholars & theologists were crappy at, it was continuity. Think about the guy who had to go "crap, we didn't even write down when Jesus was born! December 24th? Why the hell not?"

Re-reading that "Avengers (vs) the Greek Gods" story is fun because of how nutty all the Gods are. Athena, Hephaestus & Apollo are the reasonable ones, while Dionysus is a yes-man in it for funsies as much as anything, and Artemis just does what she's told. Ares is just Ares. Most of the Avengers get something cool to do (Namor SCHOOLS Cerberus, the Avengers escape Pluto's realm, Captain Marvel does the Mary Sue act and does countless cool things), yet they're up against impossible odds. I love that scene where all the "Good Gods" and the Avengers go marching to talk to Zeus... and he just KOs all of them save Thor, Namor, She-Hulk & Capt. Marvel in a single shot. Captain America lies crippled but still willing to fight and help out, and Zeus just THROWS DOWN with the remaining heroes.

It's beautifully-drawn, of course. John "Michelangelo of Marvel" Buscema drawing Aphrodite? YES PLEASE. The finishes by another artist don't seem to detract much from Buscema's own stuff. Athena & Hera are suitably hot as well, compared to a lot of art from the later '80s.

Fun stuff: HERA of all people is the ultimate voice of reason, secretly aiding the heroes all along. Prometheus (the giver of fire) shows up as a secret aid-er as well, and is imperative to the saving of Hercules (he's so messed-up by the Masters of Evil's attack- they cheated AND outnumbered him- that he can't even think).

The scene where all the powerhouses fight Zeus shows just how powerful Skyfathers are, even when they're not using their Variable Power/Magic- Zeus takes a sneak-attack punch from Namor like it wasn't even there, grabs his arm, and dunks him into the floor. Captain Marvel & Black Knight each throw out Coup De Grace Hero-Point finishers, and even THEN, after a massive beatdown from the Powerhouses follows, Zeus is just "damn, this is a hard fight" before kicking their asses again. It's one of the few fights I've seen involving Thor where his "Good Showing" involves "not dying ten seconds in, and barely hanging on the entire fight".

So, why is Theseus "thee-see-us" and Perseus is "per-see-us" and Odysseus is "oh-dis-see-us" but Zeus is "zoose"?
