Relationship (Saturn- Husband)- Rhea respected her husband Saturn, but did not love him- he merely took her as his "prize" upon ruling the heavens.

Total: Abilities: 98 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 32 + 128 / Defenses: 20 (309)

Rhea in Mythology: Rhea ("Flow", "Ease") takes a curious place in Greek Myth, as she's of VAST importance as the mother of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter & Hestia, and was responsible for saving Zeus's life and sending him against his father Kronus... but she doesn't really appear at all after that! She was worshipped on the island of Crete (where Zeus was said to have been brought up), but no strong cults existed surrounding her. Art featuring her ceases after the 4th Century BC. Some evidence suggests she's related to various other Mother Goddesses (such as Cybele of Anatolia), and has kind of congealed them together.

-Rhea is the mother of Zeus and his siblings, and thus is a figure of great importance, despite her quiet, unassuming nature. Taken as the bride of Saturn, she was a dutiful wife, but was heartbroken when he took their first child, Hestia, from her mother's breast, and absorbed the child in an arcane ritual, so that none could ever grow to oppose him. Four more times this happened, and Rhea lost Poseidon, Hera, Hades and Demeter to their power-hungry father. Shattered, she begged GAEA for help with her impending sixth child, and the computer (furious at Kronus for re-imprisoning GAEA's other children) agreed- she disguised the infant Zeus with a replica, and had Saturn absorb that.

-Rhea thus stole the infant Zeus away to Earth, where he was watched over by GAEA and others. Having no further children, she waited decades for Zeus to return at full power, and begin the "Titan War". Fighting alongside her children (who had now been freed from their father's body), she saw her side victorious, and was finally free to settle down and meet her children. Though she found them quarrelsome and troubling at times, Rhea was happy, and gladly faded away from public view. No stories are told of her since this time, which is how she prefers it- having witnessed Saturn's atrocities first hand, she is happy to avoid the glances of others.

-Few sentient beings outside of Olympus have ever set eyes on Rhea since the Titan War, and she remains a controversial figure to some- she is sometimes considered a war criminal, having sat at the side of a dominating madman. Others confess she helped free the world from Saturn's grip, and has thus earned a repreive. These conflicts only serve to keep her hidden. The other Gods see her as a voice of reason and wisdom, and often take council with her (Athena is probably wiser, but many of the Olympians dislike her moralistic attitude, which Rhea lacks).

Jab's Notes: Rhea is... really weird. Nothing after the Titanomachy seems to matter with her. It kind of makes her tough to figure out as a character, especially since she gets to live on with the Olympians. I figure... "Retired Goddess" seems to work. Maybe a voice of reason to the others.

So, Hera seduced a married man away from his wife, married him, was shocked and appalled at his later infidelity... and somewhere along the way became the goddess of marriage and fidelity?

... Remember, kids. Mythology is boring, dumb, and in no way reflects real life.

It really, really is. It reflects the tragic cycles of the Greek gods, as well as human behavior in the modern day. It's like Homer scripted an episode of Jerry Springer.

Chronos

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

CHRONOS (aka Aeon, Eon, Time)
Role:
Supercomputer

Chronos in Mythology: Chronos was often conflated with Kronus (King of the Titans), but he's actually a separate being- an old man who turns the wheel of time. This grew even more pronounced in later eras, with Renaissance painters depicting "Father Time" with the scythe of Kronus/Saturn. Chronos is said to have been birthed at the beginning of the universe, and some hymns proclaim him to be one of those Gods from whom all others are descended. He is more conceptual than a literal being, but is still depicted on some art, so they apparently thought he was a real guy.

-Chronos, like many other aspects of Greek Mythology, is actually a machine- a sentient World-Ship that pilots the key Gods about the universe when they wish to travel from Olympus. Without much personality (the Gods have had issues with that in the past), it simply coldly answers questions and pilots the Gods about.

Jab's Notes: I could've made this some high-end God, but his questionable role in the myths, and my desire for something "different", led me to made another one of the Gods a machine.

Caerus in Mythology: Called Occasio in Rome, Caerus was the God of Luck & Opportunity. He was said to be bald-headed except for a knot on the front of his head- a metaphor how you could grab him ("Occasion") when you first saw it, but if you hesitated, the moment had passed and it was too late. All we have on him is a single description, and the mention of his parentage (Zeus).

-Occasio is a son of Zeus by an alien mother- thankfully surviving Hera's wrath, he grew up in a gaming-oriented society, and came to represent Chance, Opportunity and Luck. His immortality made him a true master gambler, and he came to become a wealthy owner of casinos and arenas the universe over- not overly-worshipped, he's among the more materialistic of Zeus's immortal children. It's said that he won his immortality (most of Zeus's children are mortal demigods) from Zeus himself in a game of chance, but neither will admit to this. Occasio is most often seen when superheroes need to access international gambling dens, or are kidnapped by ruthless gladiator-themed villains- he is generally helpful, as committing outright illegal acts draws negative attention upon himself.

Jab's Notes: Just another minor God, but I figured his concept could make for some fun stories.

Aidos in Mythology: Aidos is a daughter of Prometheus by an unknown mother, and represents the shame, reverence and respect that restrains men from doing wrong. Not a major Goddess, she at least had two shrines in Athens, and one in Rome.

-Aidos (daughter of Prometheus and a mortal alien police officer) is a low-level official in the Olympian Empire, acting as an investigator into the activities of agents within. Anyone acting unlawfully may become a target of her or her ally Nemesis- even some of the Gods have been investigated. It was Aidos & Nemesis that uncovered Athena's killing of an Olympian ally, which resulted in her being forced to undertake Twelve Labors of her own.

Jab's Notes: I was gonna make her some minor "nothing", but then I realized that her nature kind of implies someone who tries to ensure the good behavior of others, which is vaguely like a detective, and the combination with Nemesis made me think "Immortal Cops", so there you have it :).

Total: Abilities: 84 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 20 / Defenses: 11 (155)

Nemesis in Mythology: Nemesis literally means "Dispenser of Dues", and represents the indignation of, and retribution for, misdeeds and undeserved good fortune. Basically, she rights unfairness in the world, to the point where she prevented anyone from enjoying too much good fortune- she was quite feared, as this could result in numerous losses and great suffering in people who'd been too lucky. Her typical role is one of conscience, preventing people from committing too much evil- in the Greek Tragedies, she appears to punish hubris. She wielded an apple-branch, rein, lash, sword or balance, and was often seen as winged.

-Her Roman names included Invidia (Jealousy) and Rivalitas (Jealous Rivalry). Hesiod declared her the offspring of Nyx (Night) with no father (along with many other afflicters and benefactors of mankind, such as Strife, Dreams and more), while Hyginus says Erebus provided the seed- this makes her MUCH more primordial than the Olympians in those tales. Other writers named Oceanus & Zeus as possible fathers. One story features her as the mother of Helen of Troy, though most don't go that route. The people of northeast Attica, Rhamnous, she was worshipped as a daughter of Oceanus in a unique cult.

-Nemesis is the daughter of Zeus and a mysterious individual that none appear to know- some claim that her mother is Nyx herself- a being few Gods have ever seen (and some don't even believe exists). She is the Goddess of the Dispensation of Dues- that is, she is the one in charge of ensuring the guilty get punished. She is partnered up with Aidos in investigative duties within the Olympian Empire- despite her obsession with her job and her martial capability, she is less capable tha Aidos at investigation, and thus needs her partner.

Jab's Notes: I came up with the whole "Buddy Cop" thing when I read that Nemesis & Aidos were often paired up as conceptual beings in mythology. I was going to make them near-clones, but figured that a name like "Nemesis" had to go to a powerhouse, so I went with a thing where Nemesis was more physically-capable, while Aidos was the "Brains" of the operation.

Hesperus & Phosphorus in Mythology: These two were the sons of Eos, Goddess of the Dawn. Hesperos was the God of the Evening Star (the old name for the planet Venus), while Phosphorus was the God of the Morning Star... which the Greeks eventually realized was STILL the planet Venus, just as a different time of day. Hesperos's father was Cephalus, a mortal, while Phosphorus's father was Astraios, God of Stars (but is sometimes also Cephalus).

The children of Hesperus were Ceyx (he and his wife were punished for calling each other "Zeus" and "Hera", and when they died, the Gods changed them into Halcyon Birds out of compassion), Daedalion (whose daughter Chione was so beauitful that Hermes & Apollo nailed her on the same day, giving birth to the twins Autolycus- the same one from "Xena" and "Hercules"- and Philammon- a famed singer and lyrist... Chione later boasted she was hotter than Artemis, so she was arrow'd to death), and the Hesperides (Nymphs of varying numbers and origins, depending on the story).

The Latin poet Ovid considered Hesperus & Phosphorus to be the same being, and was thus the father of Ceyx and Daedalion. And really, they're only important because of their children and grandchildren, who were taught about in small stories about the most deadly of sins- hubris.

-Hesperus and Phosphorus are the sons of Eos by different fathers- both were made immortal (a rare benefit, considering that Hesperus's father was a mere mortal- a fire-blasting man from the planet Argora) after great victories in space (they flew many of the Olympians's huge starships). In fact, both sons became known for great admiralship in times of war, and became important cogs in the Greek War Machine. Hesperus had a rather large number of children, many of whom were spoken of in stories, while Phosphorus was rather less well-known, and often mistaken for his brother. Their personalities are quite different, however- Hesperus is serious-minded, rarely joking; Phosphorus is fun-loving and more jovial, while possessing a more dangerous attitude that borders on mania in the opinions of his subordinates. Their high military status means they answer to very few, even though they are technically "beneath" Gods like Apollo and Hermes (especially in terms of personal power)- they typically take orders only from Zeus or Hera, and rarely Athena.

-As "low-level" Gods, they are rarely invited to important meetings, are rarely spoken of by the elite Olympians, and are occasionally disrespected by types like Ares or Eris. However, Zeus, Hera, and Athena offer them proper respect, and the leaders ensure they are well taken-care-of in terms of financial rewards- they understand the advantage of high-end military power. Both brothers often chafe under the dominating rule of the others, but generally take it in stride, given their high positions over others. Some question what would happen if Phosphorus was pushed, however...

-Both brothers are quite similar as warriors and military men, though Hesperus has innate Fire-Blasting owing to his Half-Argoran physiology merging with his Half-Olympian nature. The fully-Olympian Phosphorus has no innate powers, despite his name.

Jab's Notes: These guys are minor, minor figures, given a confusing backstory (are they the same God or not?) and typically no importance other than "_____ begat _____, who is the one who did all this interesting stuff", because old storytellers liked to give their subjects some kind of divine birth (as opposed to "the son of a sheep-farmer" or something boring like that). So when I found their names in a list of the children of Eos, I had to come up with SOMETHING. Since they're named for "Stars" (actually the planet Venus), I figured them for some kind of space-thing, which led me to "well, SOMEONE has to fly their ships"- hence, Admirals. I was gonna make Phosphorus the fiery one, but since Hesperus is the one with the mortal father, I made him half-alien, since I wanted more of the backgrounders to have alien natures.

Complications:
Relationship (Zeus)- Hera & Zeus have been married for centuries, but often tumultuously. Zeus frequently tires of his wife's company and strays, while Hera rages. Still, the two are well-suited, and both revel in the power and prestige the other's companionship brings.
Responsibility (Marriage & Childbirth)- Hera holds marriage as sacred, and thinks poorly of those who divorce or break their vows. She similarly is skilled at midwifery (though her daughter Eilethyia is charged with the matter as well).
Responsibility (Olympian Pride)- Hera is among the most prideful of the Olympians- when Zeus cheats on her, she is vicious and vengeful to his consorts, whether they had any say in the matter or not. She has chafed at the idea that several of Zeus' offspring serve on the Olympian Council.
Responsibility (Favored Cities)- Hera's favored cities on Earth are Argos, Sparta & Mecenae.

Hera in Mythology: Hera is a pretty notable Pantheon member, being the Queen of the Gods, and chosen wife of Zeus (particularly when he was loyal to her). Problem was, Zeus had a major wandering eye, and Hera was WICKEDLY jealous, to the point where she frequently tried to murder his numerous mistresses, and slay their half-breed children. This is undoubtedly the most notable thing about Hera to most people, which gives her a rather villainous edge in most Olympian-based stories (especially since Hercules, a frequent target, is the most famous Greek hero by far). She has VERY few myths in which she bestows favour to mortals- it's usually Hera punishing Troy for Paris calling Aphrodite hotter than her, Hera tricking Semele into forcing Zeus to atomize her, Hera seducing Zeus so he can't help Troy, etc. Hera is a straight-up physical embodiment of "The Woman Scorned". There is some thought that she was the Mother Goddess of Grecian people who existed before the Olympian Pantheon took hold, and thus was a more positive, matriarchal figure, but was supplanted by Zeus symbolically later on.

-Hera is the eldest daughter of Saturn and Rhea, and Queen of the Gods- she and Zeus married for love and mutual status millennia ago (soon after the Titan War- their wedding was actually at the celebration that finalized the treaty with the remaining Titans). Hera was afforded tremendous powers and respect, and reveled in both- however, Zeus' famous wandering eye resulted in her frequent humiliations. The proud Goddess often berated her husband (despite the fact that she herself had been "The Other Woman", ending Zeus's marriage to Themis), but saved her vengeance for his consorts (as Zeus himself was largely-immune to punishment, and of course still benefitted her status as Queen)- she attempted to prevent Leto from giving birth to Apollo & Artemis, and set a lifetime of struggles before Heracles, Zeus' son by Alcmene. She arranged for the death of Dionysus' mother Semele as well. Many of Zeus' unfortunate consorts were killed, whether they knew their lover's identity or not.

-Hera soon came to be known as one of the most dangerous Goddesses to cross- she rarely favored her own children with Zeus (Ares, Eris, Hephaestus, Eilethyia & Hebe), and even punished Hephaestus for his ugliness at birth, casting the infant from Mount Olympus (resulting in him being permanently crippled). The Greeks seemed to revel in stories of her humiliation and rage, which angered her further- Hera secretly aided the Romans who invaded and conquered the Grecian nation-states, then arranged for the stories of "Juno", her new identity, to pass on a much more important light. The month of June bore her name, and numerous towns held her as their chief representative (she acclimated her & Zeus' new names from the most ancient myths of the Latin regions- Jupiter & Juno were said to suckle from the Primordial Goddess Fortuna). Unfortunately, the Poet Virgil would later made her one of the key villains of The Aenid.

-Hera remains the proud, mighty Queen of the Gods, though is no longer worshipped very much on Earth. She has instead extended her cult to various worlds, creating armies of loyal troops. She and Zeus are frequently separated for decades at a time, and each have their own schemes. Growing more and more displeased with Zeus' philandering, Hera has gained several consorts- all of them powerful warriors, thinkers or leaders. The results of these pairings have gone on to lead their various cultures, creating an army that would die for their God-Queen. Hera has thus become a controversial force to be reckoned with on an Intergalactic stage, and has drawn the ire of her husband whenever he notices such things. Zeus has been kept busy across the stars, containing universal threats and other things that may affect his Pantheon, leaving Hera much to her own devices.

-Hera was never much of a battlefield commander, but retains the status and powers of an Olympian child of Saturn. Over the years, she has chafed under Zeus' rule, and has sought increases in power via other means- she has eventually become very powerful, having studied Magic for centuries and found it to her liking. Her spells are few, but terrifyingly-effective- she can alter the forms of people's bodies, making her very dangerous.

Jab's Notes: Hera's a BIG part of my setting, and her act as Zeus's "Hand in the World" while he's off doing Zeus-Things is a major plot point. Her imperialistic motivations and thirst for more power, and her way of getting into many worlds' business (by marrying & breeding with their leaders and most powerful individuals) makes her a much bigger threat than any standard "Universal Conqueror"- she can now have armies loyal only to her by birthright. Also, I like drawing her hair, and find her face a bit unique- attractive, but showing an slightly-older appearance. More maternal & queenly than the typically-young-looking female villains out there.

Divine Offspring:
With Zeus: Hebe (Goddess of Youth), Eilethyia (Goddess of Childbirth), Ares (God of War), Hephaestus (God of the Forge), Eris (Goddess of Strife)
With Others: Too many heroes of other worlds to easily count- her children and grandchildren now number in the hundreds.

Relations With Other Gods:
Zeus- Hera despises Zeus's infidelities now as much as ever, and grew bitter and hateful over it.
Athena- Hera has an uncomfortable relationship with the children of Zeus's various dalliances, treating them distantly, but with superficial politeness and tact. As Athena is annoyingly "heroic" and intrusive now, Hera frequently schemes to stall the Goddess of Wisdom's activities, or keep her ignorant of Hera's plans.
Eris- Hera finds her daughter tiresome and prone to provoking quarrels among important individuals, but a powerful ally in sowing destruction among her enemies.
Hephaestus- Hera is disgusted and annoyed at her son, but finds his inventions useful.
