-Garuda is the Secret Boss of Street Fighter EX, and was said to be the combined form of all the souls killed by the Dark Hadou power within Ryu. He was unleashed during a fight between Akuma & Kairi, and hunts the mysterious Kairi down for possessing tremendous power. However, in the end of the series, Garuda is slain when Kairi focuses the "Dark Hadou" into a power for life instead of death. He looks just like Yoshimitsu from Tekken mixed with Bishamon from DarkStalkers.

SF V

Post by Jabroniville »

STREET FIGHTER V:
-Only a handful of years after the final SF IV game came the most recent title in the series. It largely copies the same style as the other games, but has drawn controversy for doing the Killer Instinct method of releasing an unfinished game to start, and then offering the new characters as "Downloadable" options, meaning that you have to BUY some of them. Keep in mind that the game was released at a decent price point already, and you realize part of why I hate modern gaming, and why I don't play anything anymore.

-The game is largely a rehash, plotwise, of the other games in the series- Bison has reformed Shadaloo, gathered three other guys to make up the "Four Kings", and is using his Psycho Drive to take over the world again. This dude is straight-up King Koopa-ish for repeating himself. The rest of the cast, seemingly held in a permanent time-loop, have gathered into a MASSIVE part to stop him, with cut-scenes featuring ridiculously huge gatherings of Chun-Li, Cammy, Guile, Ryu, Ken, Karin, Ibuki, R.Mika, Zangief and more all dogpiling in to add their two cents. Man... remember when this was about a TOURNAMENT?

-Despite some fan backlash over the DLC stuff, the game DOES have some of the best graphics around, fixing the issues SF IV had with hideous movements and cartoonish exaggeration on the characters' faces. Some of the costume updates have been well-liked (Chun-Li's optional evening gown is HOLY GOD, and people dig Guile's sunglasses), while others are reviled (Ken WHAT THE FRICK ARE YOU WEARING?). The new characters are... well, everyone likes the sexy Bonita, but F.A.N.G. seems pretty well reviled. Plus they changed Vega from a "Charge Character" into a "Movement Character", which makes him play completely differently (instead of holding back or down and then pressing the opposite direction & a button to do his moves, he uses Ryu & Ken-style "controller motions" to activate Special Attacks).

-This version of the game seemst to be avoiding the legendary "Capcom Sequel Stagnation" by simply releasing small, downloadable updates as time moves on, and has shown some attitude in bringing back old characters while updating some surprising choices (R.Mika?... KARIN???), so we'll see where this one ends up. For now, the roster is a great mix of old names, 4 new challengers that manage to stand out, and some unexpected updates... but is notably missing The God-Emperor of Muay Thai, who has only been rumored about thus far. This, and the fact that he is EASILY the most-popular character still missing, makes me drool with anticipation of the implied Big Comeback return of the most unstoppable, greatest Street Fighter character in history- the mighty Sagat. Naturally, E.Honda (who's really the least-popular and iconic of the Big Twelve when you think about it) and the unpopular three "New Contenders" are also missing, and the game is practically overloaded with sexy women.

The Roster:
(Returning)
1) Ryu
2) Ken
3) Chun-Li
4) Cammy
5) Birdie (now shockingly obese)
6) Dhalsim (now with a beard and a turban)
7) Karin (returned as a Zaibatsu leader)
8) M. Bison (the Boss once more)
9) R. Mika
10) Vega
11) Zangief
12) Charlie Nash (resurrected a Frankenstein's monster mish-mash with some green body parts)

(New Characters)
13) Laura Matsuda (extraordinarily-fanservicey Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter)
14) F.A.N.G. (creepy weird guy with "poison" powers)
15) Rashid (Middle Eastern hero with wind powers)
16) Necalli (weird "God of Fighting" out to consume souls)

(First Wave of Downloadables)
17) Alex
18) Balrog (now with a BITCHING "Fighter's Jacket")
19) Guile (now with shades)
20) Ibuki (now a Ninja Schoolgirl)
21) Juri
22) Urien (From SF III, working for the Illuminati in a "Prequel")

(Second Wave of Downloadables)
23) Akuma

* As this series is currently out now, and rather new, expect this section to be increased by quite a bit.

Initiative +9

Defenses:
Dodge +13 (DC 23), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +4 (+5 D.Roll), Fortitude +8, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation (Devouring Souls)- Necalli wishes to devour the souls of Dhalsim, Ryu & M. Bison. His quest will require him to beat the #%! out of people.
Responsibility (Savage)- Necalli is primitive and savage, and cannot comprehend the modern world.
Weakness (Predictability)- Necalli, like all Street Fighters, cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time he tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, he will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 11 + 14 / Powers: 55 / Defenses: 23 (156)

-Necalli is one of the newbies from Street Fighter V, and has the most outlandish origin out of the crew. An ancient Godlike entity (drawing signs from Aztec mythology, specifically their God of Death, Huitzilopochtli), he has a pretty good design, focused around his crazy "living hair", fashioned into Dreadlocks of Doom that may attack for him. Unstable and monstrous, he seeks to kill powerful warriors and devour their souls. In-game, he desires the souls of Ryu, Dhalsim and Bison... so it's quite pitiful that he fails in all three, becoming a bit of a butt-monkey for a guy who practically could have been the Final Boss.

-Fighting Style: Necalli's "fighting style" is more just feral brawling and primordial, predatory assaults than any kind of concrete effort at form & function. This is kind of appreciable, as it's way different from the other guys' forms- even BALROG has more focus and control! Playing with him requires a lot of attention, as you control things via his normal attacks, rather than "gimmicks" or Specials. Unlike most Street Fighters, he has "out of game" powers, including stuff like Shapeshifting into animal forms, or disappearing into the dirt. Some of his attacks have Projectile Immunity, meaning his Dodge is higher than most World Warriors. However, despite his reputation, his repeated failures (and Rookie nature as a character) give him only PL 9 status.

It simply comes across as off, as if his arms were sprouting outward from his chest.

The third time she tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, she will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 11 + 14 / Powers: 11 / Defenses: 23 (130)

-The "New Hotness" of Street Fighter is of course Laura Matsuda, the elder sister of franchise butt-monkey Sean, and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner (BJJ is known for sparking the modern-day MMA Revolution thanks to the vanity tournament of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, created to "put over" the Gracie family's modification of the Japanese fighting style). Her character design IMMEDIATELY drew attention, as she's got one of those "half-long hair, half-other thing" going on with the braids, classic miscegenized Brazilian good looks, and a REALLY cool outfit. Now, I find some of her secondary gear a bit too skank-tastic, as I was kind of hoping more for a "sporty ass-kicker" than "dresses indistinguishably from an American streetwalker", but you deal with what you got. Though apparently this is a VERY common thing in Brazil- one of Anthony Bourdain's Food/Travelogue shows discusses how Brazilian women dress more to show up EACH OTHER than to impress any man. So really... it's more of a cultural thing, not just Capcom being perverts. Though them being perverts DEFINITELY plays into it, make no mistake :).

-Laura is a cheery, fighty "bohemian" free spirit who enjoys tormenting her little brother, and moves around promoting the "Matsuda Family Jiu-Jitsu" (her Japanese last name actually makes sense- Brazil has a LOT of racial mixing, and you're never gonna find a place that's more likely to have someone of mixed Latino/Black/Japanese ancestry.

-Laura is very unusual in the game series- a grappler who is on the weaker end of things, AND has a Blast! This "Thunder Clap" is a slow-moving projectile, acting more to "set-up" the opponent than do damage (it's got the same statline as Chun-Li's "Kikkoken" Fireball). One of her specialities is the "Bolt Charge", which is a dashing elbow that allows her to do any number of "follow-up" moves, acting very much like the unpredictable, Feint-based moves of other fighters. Many of her moves contain "grapples" that basically put on an arm or leglock and then just SLAM the opponent down, which is a pretty good way of handling the grapple-based BJJ in a fighting game. Because really, there's not a lot of room for "Submissions" in Street Fighter, so you gotta do it that way.

-However, part of me always wonders what it'd be like to have limb-based moves in games like this- the closest thing was Bushido Blade, which was a "One-Hit Can Kill You"-themed Swordfighting Game, in that a single strike could cripple or finish the victim. But the idea of throwing on an Armlock and thus weakening your opponent's punches, or making his grapples easier to escape... or using leg-based stuff to make the enemy slower. That kind of stuff could add an extra wrinkle to games like this.

Seriously though, that's uh... a LITTLE over the top.

Distant male cousins must have been very afraid of training with her if she uses that [thing that passes for a] Uwagi* when training. It would be funny if the whole family uses the uniform with the short top tied in the chest and the ass-showing pants, though XD

Maybe that is why Sean wants to learn Karate instead?

Also, yeah, Brazil has a perhaps unexpectedly sizeable amount of Japanese descendants, particularly in the state of São Paulo. Even if that was not the case, Laura Matsuda is an infinitely better Brazilian name than Khushnood Butt** .

*top part of a Japanese martial arts uniform (or really any coat, jacket, tunic, et cetera)

**WTF was the localization team on the US version of Mark of the Wolves thinking there? The original, Marco Rodriguez, is still closer to a name from a Spanish-speaking country, but much better.

Weakness (Predictability)- Rashid, like all Street Fighters, cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 45--22.5 / Advantages: 12 + 14 / Powers: 12.5 / Defenses: 20 (147)

-Rashid was created in order to finally give Street Fighter its first real Arabic (Hakan is from Turkey) character (they had a distributor in the Middle east for SF V, which is why they made it a specific thing)- like a lot of Arabic guys (seriously, I see this a LOT. In more than one form of fiction!), he has wind powers. And for some reason, he wears a "Power Level Scouter", akin to one of Frieza's minions in Dragon Ball Z. Truth be told, though, I think he looks pretty cool. He's a bit of a generic "Friendly" character, and fights to rescue some random person he knows from Shadaloo, so he basically fits right into the massive main squad of characters at this point.

-Fighting Style: Rashid is a quick, mobile fighter designed to harry the opponent with somewhat unpredictable attacks. His "Spinning Mixer" combines a Multiattack move with the randomness of a "depends on what button you press"-style move, in that he can move forwards, diagonally or straight up, keeping the enemy guessing and unable to predict the right defensive posture. His "Eagle Spike" is a standard "Dash Move", the "Whirlwind Shot" is a curious Blast (it whirls upwards at an angle, making it more of an Anti-Air than a good Ranged Damage effect), and both his V-Trigger & Critical Art (basically "Super Moves By Different Names") summon giant Tornados that do great amounts of damage. Overall, a good, solid mobile attacker.
