Shame the Death-Throws have only appeared twice in like 10 years, since they're hillariously silly.

Every single time I have read ‘Death-Throws’ I have a flashback to me being 15 and hearing my DM say, “Ok, guys, make a saving throw vs death magc!”

....yeah, AD&D was a weird, clunky system.

-Knicknack is the craziest member of his team of psychos, in that he juggles CHAINSAWS in addition to meat cleavers, axes, lead pipes and other items of different weights. This is likely the most difficult type of juggling in real life, but he's the most dunder-headed of his team, being a near-dwarf of low intelligence. Juggling Chainsaws may be the most awesome power-set ever included in a loser character.

-Knicknack is kind of a mini-powerhouse, being among the strongest of his team with the most damaging weapons (he pays a premium for his Chainsaws since he can Throw them- which pretty much any other character could never do- he needs 7 ranks of Ranged to get his full damage bonus onto them, and even then can only do +8 in melee).

Also, I've never watched RWBY, or even played the video game, but I'd be interested in the builds because Ruby is inexplicably a guest fighter in the next Blazblue fighting game, which is really odd to see.

-Bombshell has actually shown up outside of the Death-Throws, in the Superia Stratagem arc of Captain America that had all those other Mort females, as well as a few background scenes in other books. Her gimmick was that of a slightly butch chick in a lame pink outfit that juggles GRENADES instead of regular stuff- well, it works. Nowadays, she's pretty much your standard glamorous villainess. She briefly gained actual superpowers, but they soon faded (I bet the next writer forgot), as well as fighting Spider-Man and the New Warriors, and teaming up with Justin Hammer & The Sphinx before rejoining her teammates.

-Bombshell is a moderate PL 7 with her Explosive weapons, and an actual outfit that specially throws them out- making her a bit handier in a scrap than most of the others with their easily-damaged Equipment.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 4 (54)

-Oh God I love Al Ewing's stuff so much- no modern writer understands how to properly write superhero stuff like him- it's silly AND it can be dramatic. But man... adding a new member to the DEATH-THROWS? This guy is a genius.

-Ever since she was a little girl, Throwdown has dreamed of being a juggling-themed super-villain (God I love Al Ewing). Unfortunately, while a provisional member of the Death-Throws (I mean, they aren't gonna let just any idiot onto the squad), she is tested by Loki, who has been turned good by the AXIS spell. He gets Bombshell to explode a bomb near Throwdown, whose stilts are set alight, making her panic enough to accidentally take out tenpin with a flaming stilt. The team is quickly defeated after that.

-Throwdown is very inexperienced, and not quite up to the standard of luminaries like Tenpin and Knickknack- she is a mere PL 5, and gets panicky in fight situations.

-The Troll Associates are five Trolls named Phy, Phough, Phummm, Phay and Phee (try to guess the naming theme), and emerge from tunnels underneath London, England in search of gold. They kidnap Thomas "Alchemy" Jones in order to make them gold, and his terrified mother calls X-Factor. X-Factor arrives to fight the villains, but are beaten and captured. The Trolls, who wish to destroy England's economy, lose track of their captives, and Thomas finally finds the will to fight, turning Phy and Phee into gold statues. The others escape, while the statues are placed in Hyde Park for display, once Thomas turns them to lead.

-Naturally, villains this goofy reappeared within Excalibur, with a whole new band led by Phough. They kidnapped Alchemy once more, getting his help in capturing the X-Men and Excalibur, in order to help them and their fae allies take over the world. Nightcrawler acted as a double-agent, pretending to join the Trolls, then had Phough turned to gold, ending the fight.

Membership:
PHY- PL 10 (80): AWA +2 [4]
-Phy was the leader in the first story, and turned to gold at the end of it.

PHEE- PL 10 (75): ST -2, STA -2, FIGHTING +2, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Equipment 2 (Flying Carpet) [-1]
-Phee is a very quick martial artist with access to a flying carpet. He is turned to gold in the second story.

PHAY- PL 10 (103): INT +3, Morph 4 (Metamorph) [27]
-Phay was a shapeshifter, and seemed very well-read. He appears in both stories.

PHOUGH- PL 10 (93): AWA +2, Flight 5 (Winged), "Talons" Penetrating Damage 8 [17]
-Phough led the team in the second fight, and had wings & sharp talons. He was turned to gold in the end of the second tale.

PHUMM- PL 10 (76):
-Phumm was super-strong, and was left to guard X-Factor, but was beaten by his captives. He was part of Phough's group in the Excalibur story, but was turned to gold at the end.

OTHERS: Phiend, Phit, Phlegm, Phlopp & Phopp appear as backgrounders in the second story.
PHELIX: Phelix was a fae-looking wizard with constantly-changing predictive powers.

Booooooooo.

More serious response: Yeah, I've had an awful time trying to get people interested in this show ... I think a major factor in my own enjoyment is that I'd been a fan of Monty's work long before he started this project.

I have the same issue with shows like Dragon Ball Z/Super and Naruto.

RWBY

Post by Jabroniville »

RWBY:
So this is one of those shows that people have been basically insisting that I watch for ages, going back to Ronin Army at least a couple of years ago. Spectrum & Kreuzritter in particular have suggested I watch it, with Kreuz often showing me various clips. And I think I had REPEATED people on my thread/s ask things like "I know you don't do requests, but have you every seen RWBY?" (translation: "I want you to stat RWBY"). I tried a few episodes, disliked the animation style, the character design (it's HIDEOUS), and didn't get into the plot, and so I moved on. In particular, I REALLY hated the fights.

See, the fights reminded me of some animated fights Kreuz had shown me years before, of Samus fighting a chick Halo trooper or something. They were well-animated CGI battles, but more or less consisted of NOTHING BUT SPINNING, characters taking hundreds of multiattack shots at a time, getting blasted all over the place... then simply getting back up and hitting the foe with their own stuff, never having "sold" a single shot as if it had any impact or effect. Every fight was like this- spinning and no-selling. In pro wrestling terms, this is called a "Spotfest", and is a derogatory nickname for matches where the guys just move from attack to attack with no rhyme or reason, nobody stopping to sell the effects, and just getting up to do more moves. They used to be popular in the 1990s, but the business moved on and people started demanding more "story" to the aimless fights.

And RWBY's fights reminded me EXACTLY of those videos. So imagine my surprise upon doing research into the series, and discovering that both this series and those fights were animated by the EXACT SAME GUY. Monty Oum, who apparently died a couple of years into doing this series, which was the first "long form" animated series done by Rooster Teeth Productions, aka the guys behind the Halo-themed series Red (vs) Blue (the company is named after their frequent insult, "Cock-bite").

So yeah, I didn't get into it. I moved on. But the popularity of the series with some of y'all made me reconsider things, and do something like what I did with the Horror Builds themed around the Terrordrome game- since I've no interest in the show and would never do the builds on my own, I can simply let someone ELSE do all the work! HalloweenJack was good enough to do that for the Horror characters, doing a very good job explaining what he liked about each film series and the characters and actors within. And so I cajoled BriarThorne into giving me bios and descriptions of the main characters of this show. So you can thank him for these! And my apologies to all the show's fans that I'm doing the builds at the same time as making fun of the show, which I will never watch again :).

And the name of the series is pronounced "Ruby".

BriarThorne's Notes:
General notes about the setting
Fairy tale monsters are called Grimm. They're drawn to dark emotions, especially fear. Grimm are fairy tale monsters. When the god of light made life, his little brother, the god of darkness, made Grimm to snuff it out. They’re attracted to negative emotions, especially fear. You’ve got basic species, like Beowolf and Ursa, to the Nuckelavee, which resembles a horse and rider, and the Geist, which uses possession attacks. They get bigger, more powerful, and more cunning with age.

They're fought by Hunters and Huntresses. The academies that train these are central to the story. Hunters have a powerful "aura" - basically strong ki - that they hone, giving them strength, mobility, and protection from harm. They also have a Semblance, which is one spiffy magical ability per person. They don't think of it as magic, though. They think magic is something that requires Dust, which is viewed as the key weapon to fighting back the Grimm. Secretly, there are magical beings in the setting that aren't limited to a Semblance and don't need Dust.

Huntsmen are the greatest warriors of humanity against the Grimm. They have powerful Aura abilities. It makes them extremely strong, fast, and resilient. Seventeen-year-olds just starting their advanced training can be catapulted in the general direction of a forest, told to “use your own descent strategy,” and not only survive, but be ready to do their placement exam in this forest, despite the reasonable probability of encountering Grimm there. Injury and exertion depletes Aura, which can be monitored by the scroll. Each Huntsman also has a Semblance ability, sometimes resembling that of family members, but often unique. Sometimes this is an active ability, like Ruby’s movement, a reactive ability, like Yang’s power increase, or a constant passive effect, like Qrow’s aura of misfortune. Each Huntsman also has a unique weapon, either an heirloom or something they’ve designed themselves, usually having multiple modes or functions.

The Huntsmen are trained in academies, one in each of the Four Kingdoms. The series is initially set in Beacon Academy, in the city of Vale. The Academies are secretly home to a benevolent conspiracy to protect the Four Maidens of the Seasons and their holy relics.

Dust is the method humanity discovered to fight back against the Grimm. It’s crystalized magic, and as far as most people are aware, the only form of magic. It’s elemental in nature. Red for fire, yellow for electricity, blue for water, and green (or white?) for wind, and mixtures can make new types of effects. Dust powers all forms of technology, including all sorts of vehicles and weapons and communications arrays.

Technology in the setting seems relatively advanced, but still familiar. They have cell phones (or “scrolls”) that look like serious next-gen stuff, and it’s unusual for a Hunter to have a weapon that has only one form. They can use their scrolls not only to make video calls, but also to deploy their weapon lockers, which have rockets for such a purpose.

The Faunus are people with beneficial animal traits. Faunus are people with some animal traits, commonly ears or a tail, and often superior night vision. Two faunus with traits of the same animal, or a faunus and a human, have children with that animal's trait. Two faunus with different animals are rolling the dice, and the kid can have traits of ANY animal. They're viewed as distinctly subhuman by most, and not sexy slightly-superhumans, which is evidence that the entire setting is made up of idiots. They’re generally seen as racially inferior, as basically animals, or smelly, or liars. There was a war at some point in the past between faunus and human, which was costly to both sides, and to this day faunus are persecuted to a greater or lesser extent in most parts of the world. Their only stronghold is the very crowded island city of Menagerie.

I wasn't a fan of the animation at first, but it grows in leaps and bounds every season. Monty's choreographed fights weren't to my taste, either, but with his unfortunate passing, the fights quickly became more plausible. I endured the early stages because I liked the premise and the characters, and eventually the show grew into something I completely enjoyed, rather than something I enjoyed despite some elements.

Honestly, I don't find the style of art a lot different than a more-complex-and-consistent version of Sailor Moon, and considering that Weiss is basically a better written Rei Hino and referred to as "Ice Queen" BY HER FRIENDS, I'm amazed Jab hasn't seen fit to jump on board with us yet...

Completely agree. Dragon Ball Super has at least given us a couple episodes showcasing the non-Saiyans. I was pretty happy with how they handled the Krillin vs Gohan and Krillin vs Goku episodes.
