Era: Cretaceous
Range: North America
Size: Up to 30 feet long
Encounter Groups: Large herds
Tactics: Charge with large horns, defend in numbers
Same Stats As: Torosaurus

-And here we come to the second most famous dinosaur of all time, the Triceratops. A huge, 30-foot herbivore, he's been depicted as fighting against T-Rex in nearly every piece of dino-fiction I saw as a kid. It's distinctive appearance and huge size make it the top Ceratopsian around (in fact, I think it's the final one evolved, so they really got no better than this- they died out during the K/T Extinction Event along with all the other dinosaurs as we knew them). Their gigantically heavy skulls were above and beyond the most impressive, as they were SOLID BONE, whereas most Ceratopsians had large gaps in their skulls. Thus, this is likely the only one that would've been a half-decent defense against predators (though it, too, would've broken comparatively easily). Torosaurus, which may or may not be just the same species, but a bit older in age (Paleontologists disagree about it- like they do about everything), is of similar stature and power, and has a MUCH cooler name (though it means "perforated lizard", and not "Bull lizard").

-For a campaign, this is obviously your iconic dino, especially if the heroes need someone to protect them against T-Rex. They're huge, impressive, and can run down just about anything, and are PL 10 heavyweight creatures. Now, these are one of only a handful of dinosaurs actually statted up in official M&M terms (in 2nd Edition anyways), but I wasn't quite satisfied with theirs. Toughness +17 for an Elephant-sized animal? That's four or five ranks better than elite Super-Bricks like The Thing & Colossus (or at least their M&M comparable characters)! It's also got +12 Attack Bonus, and while I'll give you that a large animal would have a better "hit chance" than a small one would alot of the time, that seems excessive, and solely there to make the animal hit PL 12, which I think is above and beyond powerful enough- in real life, humans COULD bring this thing down with a tank or something, and tanks rarely challenge metahumans in games.

-Think about it: in comics, a standard PL 10 hero could probably take down a good-sized dinosaur by himself. Hell, stories inolving Stegron bringing together TONS of dinos, or the Savage Land itself, often have the dinos be mere obstacles or things relatively easy to fight off, where the super-villains are the key threat. I've seen Pyro nuke a T-Rex in ONE SHOT in the X-Books. So there's no need to have the dinosaurs hit excessive Power Levels.

"Not THAT Weak" Power-Lifting 1 (50 lbs.) [1]
Speed 2 (8 mph) [2]
Leaping 1 (15 feet) [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (-1 Damage, DC 14)
Initiative +8

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +0, Fortitude +2, Will +2

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dinosaurs cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Age of Reptiles was a much hotter time period than our own. Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.

Total: Abilities: 2 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 4 (28)

Era: Late Triassic
Range: North America
Size: Up to 9.8 feet long
Encounter Groups: Unknown (likely solitary or rarely-gathering)
Tactics: Fleeing using speed, Leaping & pouncing on small animals
Same Stats As: Other small theropods, Oviraptor

-Coelophysis is as good a place as any to start with the Theropods. They're one of the ultimate "Prey Species" dinosaurs, a relatively unimpressive, small creature that was one of the very first dinosaurs (and a very early Theropod, which would later include the REALLY big predators). Short, skinny and very long, they weren't major threats to anything big, but were hunters of small lizards and fish.

-I can't imagine too much use for them in a campaign other than background figures, but finding a pit of 200 of them could be a challenge even for PL 10 groups of heroes :). They're nifty window-dressing for a campaign, in any case. At PL 3, but quite weak (only PL 1.5 with fighting), they're not much more of a threat than a PL 0 human, because they do so little damage. I mean, they have pointy teeth and *I* wouldn't want to fight one, but your average dog could whup it's little reptilian ass. Oviraptors are similarly-statted creatures, being the famous "Egg Thieves" of the Dinosaur kingdom (though they were predators just like any other- they got this rep by one animal being buried very close to a Protoceratops nest).

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (-1 Damage, DC 13)

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness -1, Fortitude +2, Will +2

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dinosaurs cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Age of Reptiles was a much hotter time period than our own. Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.

Total: Abilities: 2 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 5 (27)

Era: Late Cretaceous
Range: North America
Size: Up to 8 feet long (110 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Unknown (possibly omnivorous)
Tactics: Fleeing using speed, Leaping & pouncing on small animals
Same Stats As: Other small theropods, Oviraptor, Ornitholestes, Psittacosaurus (Strength -2)

-Troodon is more or less like Coelophysis, but a mite smaller (about as large as a dog, so it's still not gaining Shrinking). Still not a powerhouse, it's famous for being one of the smarter dinosaurs, having a large brain, and bigger eyes that face forward, giving excellent binocular vision. This is the creature that led to the prospective "Dinosauroid", the "what if Dinosaurs continued evolving?" creature that gave many a child horrible nightmares. The thing is pretty much unscientific (a reptile evolving a humanoid stance with a belly button and opposable hands, while still looking reptilian?) and mass guessing, but it says something when a dinosaur looks smart enough to have THAT be a conclusion.

-At PL 2, Troodon is very much alike, but weaker than Ceolophysis, and *I* sure wouldn't want to fight one, despite it being on the small end of the Dinosaur scale. It's teeth are serrated, it's fast, and big enough to do some damage, which makes it weakest among Dinos, but still a threat to Dogs & Cats, considering that it has the same accuracy as a Ceolophysis. Similar Dinosaurs are all over the place- usually fitting the same general profile- short, elongated creature with swift legs and a really long tail. They probably all had feathers. Oviraptor ("egg thief") and Psittacosaurus ("parrot lizard") have fairly recognizable parrot-like beaks. The latter is actually not a Theropod at all, but a primitive Ceratopsian. It was likely herbivorous, but tiny.

Defenses:

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dinosaurs cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Age of Reptiles was a much hotter time period than our own. Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.
Vulnerable (Area Attacks)- Being so tiny means that Compies are subject to Area Attacks when struck by anything Human-size or larger. As such, humans and other creatures can strike many Compies with melee attacks at once, or provoke Dodge Checks despite missing with a Close Attack.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 21 / Defenses: 2 (16)

Era: Late Jurassic
Range: Europe
Size: Up to 3 feet long (7 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Unknown (possibly omnivorous)
Tactics: Fleeing using speed, Leaping & pouncing on small animals.
Same Stats As: Other tiny theropods- Caenagathasia, Microraptor, Procompsognathus, Podekosaurus

-Compsognathus is pretty famous for being the tiniest dinosaur around, though there are a few that are even TINIER (Microraptor, for one). But still, the fact that a group of animals- hell, just among THEROPODS- can contain both the mighty T-Rex and THIS seven-pound ball of lizardy cuteness, is just insane. Compies were in the Lost World film (and killed John Hammond in the original Jurassic Park novel), fighting en masse in huge hordes to bring down large human-sized animals (well, they killed humans in both), though this is completely out of the blue, and extraordinarily unlikely in real life (not alot of animals will attack something THAT much bigger than them, especially when they can fight back). Which of course means that you should TOTALLY DO IT in your games!

-Compies have pathetically-tiny statlines, as a seven-pound creature should. They would even lose a fight to a common Housecat (same hitting power & toughness, but a much worse fighter). They're just here because I felt like statting one. Tiny animals have some weird stat curiosities in this edition of M&M, as they need NO Agility or Fighting scores, because their tiny size would warp their defenses way beyond what they should be. A PL 6 Compie wouldn't have this problem, however.

-For a "Compie Horde", simply give the attacks a Burst Area Damage effect, likely around Rank 2 (higher for LOTS of Compies). Humans can use Area Attacks on things this tiny (note the Complications), but it could prove dangerous to non-combatants.

Encounter Groups: Large Groups
Tactics: Fleeing using speed, Leaping & pouncing on small animals (or plants, if some Paleontologists are correct).
Same Stats As: Ornithomimus, Dromiceiomimus (star of "Dinosaur Comics" webcomic)

-Struthiomimus is kind of the "Jobber" of Dinosaurs, showing up most often in fiction getting beaten up by other, cooler dinosaurs. Despite this, it's still quite large (seven feet tall, 300-odd pounds), and would probably beat the tar out of an ordinary person. Basically, it's kind of like an ostrich (given the name, that's unsurprising), but a dinosaur. At PL 4, it's hardly terrifying, but it's still very fast and fairly strong, especially for something so lightly built. Paleontologists now believe that they may be omnivorous or herbivorous, despite their Theropod origins, simply because of their SHEER NUMBERS- they appear all over the place in large groups, implying they're more than simple predators.

-If Struthiomimus is the Jobber of dinosaurs, this is the Jobber's Big Brother. Most well-known for it's appearance in Jurassic Park (they're the ones in the famous "stampede" sequence, and one gets offed by that ever-hungry T-Rex), Gallimus is HUGE, howering over human beings, and easily gaining the Growth power. It's stats are little-changed otherwise, and it's a full PL 5, as strong as any human that's ever lived.

Ankylosaurus, Triceratops and Stegosaurus are the trifecta of the cool herbivores. I've got a character that can change into dinosaurs and my ultimate goal is to get him a form that combines all three into an ultimate armored, spiked, horned super dinosaur.

-Dilophosaurus was pretty-well unknown until a certain Dinosaur-themed movie came out. Depicted as something VERY unlike it's source material, Dilophosaurus in Jurassic Park was a small-sized creature with a large frill, spitting poison into the eyes of Dennis "Newman" Nedry, and killing him while he was inside his car, in one of those incidences of "karmic retribution" so popular (and necessary) in Hollywood. Of course, paleontologists were sympathetic to this (compared to the super-fast T.rex and giant Raptors), since they can't KNOW exactly which dinosaurs (if any) had poison or spitting capabilities. For all they know, EVERY dinosaur had them. It's size was passed off as merely being a juvenile, but the frill? Totally unlikely, as that's the sort of thing that would appear on fossil records.

-Jurassic Park being what it was (ie. a kick-ass movie that rocked the world a thousand times over), this image of Dilophosaurus has proven rather pervasive (especially because nobody knew about it beforehand). So every time you see the thing in modern pop culture, expect to see both the frill AND the poison. Hell, I'd recommend using them in a M&M game, just for the heck of it- it makes the things stand out. Otherwise, it's just a very large Coelophysis that's big, but lacks the 'cool' aura of the Dromaeosaur species. Still, I'd be scared crapless of a six-metre predatory dinosaur.

-Dilophosaurus is a big, tough PL 6 Dinosaur, capable of whupping any normal human with ease, and could still be rather threatening to tough individuals- it's PL equals that of the Terror Bird, Horse, Snow Leopard & Komodo Dragon. With the addition of it's spitting, it could be REALLY scary. The JP-sized one is basically a Coelophysis that's better at fighting, is stronger, and has a Visual Dazzle with little range on it.

Crichton gave Dilophosaurs the poison in the book as a kind of "gotcha!" for the scientists and foreshadowing the idea that resurrecting dinosaurs would not be a good idea, because we don't know as much about them as we think we do. I think Crichton included the frills as well, mostly as a marker for their being a poisonous species.

But he also did that as a creative way to solve a problem that has befuddled paleontologists for decades. Dilophosaurus was clearly a predator, given its size and dentition, but it also had a very gracile jaw. It's highly doubtful that it was an active hunter, as the jaw simply could not take the stresses of slamming into a prey animal so that the Dilophosaurus could bite down on it (there's similar debate about saber-toothed cats and how they hunted, because breaking a tooth is pretty easy to do). I would hesitate to give it that +1 STR damage, for example, at least until I see what you give your other predators.

I liked that Crichton injected a little science fiction into his sci-fi book about cloned reptiles. I hate that every freakin' Dilophosaurus I see now has a neck-fringe though.

Most of my predatory animals end up with at least a +1 to damage, to note their increased hitting power compared to their strength. And I'd figure the claws & teeth of such animals would still hurt like hell- the beast in the "Size Comparison" pic up above definitely looks like something that would hit at +6 Damage (the equivalent of a strong person with a sword).

Claws, maybe. But I think that gets mostly covered by STR anyway, right? The size comparison doesn't make it look much larger than a horse, and certainly much more lightly built than a Clydesdale.

Teeth, I don't know. If it's going to break its jaw by biting you, than it doesn't matter how sharp those teeth are. It's never going to bite you, because animals are not dumb.

We've all heard about the biting/crushing power of a T. rex's jaws, but the Dilophosaurus is like the flip side of that.

I mean, it's a puzzle. I'm not saying I have it figured out when paleontologists still argue about it.

all this makes me reminiscence about my old Playskool Dinosaurs collection.....especially my Ultrasaurus, which when I brought it in for show and tell totally blew the collective minds of my second grade class

Era: Cretaceous
Range: Asia

Tactics: Leaping & pouncing attacks, slicing vitals with sickle-claw
Same Stats As: Dromaeosaurus (the breed's originator)

-Now onto a new addition to the list of "Famous Stock Dinosaurs" that regularly appear in fiction: The Dromaeosaurs! As a kid, I was aware of Deinonychus as one of the cooler "small" dinosaurs, but this one is what eventually became famous. It's also somewhat notorious in Paleontology for being the hugest pain to explain to people. See, Michael Chrichton took the Deinonychus, a six-foot tall, cool predator from Montana, and named it "Velociraptor" in his Jurassic Park book, based off of some paleontological evidence at the time that they were only slightly different species. None of these creatures were likely to be able to hold their hands in the "facing downwards threateningly" position either- their palms would always be facing each other in a "clapping" motion. And to ADD to this, we just recently discovered that the bastards are covered nearly head-to-toe in FEATHERS, completely altering every preconcieved media notion of them!

-So this wrong-named animal (since "Velociraptor" is MUCH easier to pronounce, and "Raptor" is about a thousand times cooler a nickname than anything other Dromaeosaurs can come up with) became uber-famous, so much so that all fiction later reflected a super-sized version of a turkey-sized predator, and there's even an NBA team named after them!

-So Velociraptor here is very tiny, about 33 pounds, but is still relatively dangerous, given it's horrifying claws, leaping ability, and speed. I certainly wouldn't want to mess with ONE, let alone entire groups of them (less evidence exists that they were group predators than you'd think, but if you were running a campaign, it's virtually guaranteed they are- these stats reflect a team hunter- use the standard Burst Area Damage reflecting Hordes, if you want to), as they have more Feats than most animals, and are considerably mean. As proof of their toughness- the famous "Fighting Dinosaurs" fossil display shows that one Velociraptor died while in mortal combat with a Protoceratops- itself a 500-pound beast, with it's sickle-claw digging into it's throat.

-Now THIS is pretty much what the movie's Raptors basically were- a six-foot, deadly predator with the famous GIGANTIC sickle-claws on the feet. All because it's name was a bit too hard to pronounce (me, I always assumed the penultimate syllable had the emphasis on it like in normal English, but no, apparently it's the "NON" part of the name). This creature famously set off the "Dinosaur Renaissance", as it's similarity to modern birds (especially the ratites- Emu, Ostrich, etc.), clearly fast-moving nature, and upright tail gave an ENTIRELY different impression that what paleontologists had thought existed prior. Gone were the impressions of "Tripod"-stances among T-Rex and Allosaurs, as well as the drooping tails of other species, and the impression that all dinos were slow-moving imbeciles. THIS was a fearsome, extremely quick predator that was no dummy (though still dumber than a cat or dog, so don't get any ideas about chimp-like genius here).

-Deinonychus (aka "Movie Raptor") is a big, scary bastard, easily able to take out a henchman or two, and is a huge challenge to an unarmed human being. The fact that almost any media (or M&M game) will include them in a massive horde of 2-20 creatures (or higher) makes them a LOT scarier, as they can bring down massive threats by themselves. Similarly to the smaller Big Cats, Deinonychus is a PL 6 combatant, not much stronger than a normal human, though quite a lot more dangerous. Note that JP Raptors feature Chimp & Dolphin-like Intelligence, and likely would have INT -3, representing this.

In myth and legend, it used to be fairly common to think of magically utilizing the dead as a good thing. I mean, think about it - free labor! Armies that don't have families worried about them back home! Benevolent necromancy would be FANTASTIC.
I always thought it made sense to be used for good, heck you could even use it as an in game business where people could make money by selling their dead body to be used as labor, like selling your body to science.

I brought up the idea with my gaming group and remember one guy stating it was evil because it was forcing the dead/spirits to act under your orders. I countered that what you brought back was just the physical form, whereas schools like Enchantment let you literally mind control people and force them to follow your whims. I ended up holding off on it just to avoid and trouble, but pretty sure one of my current groups would be down for my Good Necromancer.

-Holy crap is nature a mean, bastard-coated bastard with bastard filling. A friggin' 20-foot Velociraptor? This thing is so big you could latch on a saddle and RIDE IT- and it'd eat a Deinonychus for breakfast. Easily one of the scariest dinosaurs to think about, ever. For a campaign, these are the monsters to use if you REALLY hate your players' party. One or two make acceptable mounts for Minions (especially if downgraded a bit- this build represents an ELITE-calibre monster), but a whole group of them is massively deadly. Those claws are +9 death weapons that would disembowel even a Triceratops.
