Yeah, that's a good point, too- I would say almost half the line would have been REALLY pricey for the era- the Triceratops/Torosaurus, Stegosaurus, Kentrosaurus, Diplodocus & T-Rex are impressive toys EVEN NOW, much less in the 1980s. They would have likely been VERY expensive, meaning that most kids' Dino-Riders toys would have been limited to a handful of the cheaper options (Pteranodon, Quetzalcoatlus, Deinonychus, Ankylosaurus, Protoceratops, etc.), and MAYBE one of the bigger ones. These things were pricey enough that I was the only kid I knew with a good array of them (and that was only because I had a brother who wanted his OWN stuff).

I can imagine the high price point would have locked out way too many- particularly since the main characters of the show were riding the biggest, priciest dinos (T-Rex, Sauropods). This is something Transformers used to struggle with, until they started making Optimus Prime & Megatron in smaller versions for the lower-income families to at least have ONE. But they were also bright enough to make the cheapest guy in the line (Bumblebee) one of the main characters with a ton of focus, so that kids would actually want that toy as well. Though Llahd was effectively "The Bumblebee" of Dino-Riders, he was nowhere near as prominent or as capable as the gold bug was.

And really... if the toys don't sell, then the line is dead. Plain and simple- absolutely nothing of the cartoon would have been important if the toys had done well, since one only exists to push the other.

Episode Three: Llahd and his Pterodactyl (SELL THE TOYS) see the Rulons making an attack and heads off to warn everybody. Also debuting are the Ankylosaur Ballistae and Turret's Styracosaurus. In a moment I recall very well from my childhood, Serena almost dies healing some dinosaurs (this is the first time we see her healing powers- it's kind of an Ass-Pull, actually), and the team has to bring her back using their OWN life force in a big ritual (the same two dinos help, thus saving her). Ikon shows up again to give Spock-like advice (though suggests that his plain involves a 13% casualty rate, as he lacks even Spock's empathy), and this time he's got the black hair I recognize- the albino version was just for last episode. Krulos sets off a stampede as we ALSO get a look at what life is now like on Valoria- it's just three DIFFERENT generals (a snake, hammerhead & ant, naturally) arguing over who's in charge now that Krulos has been missing "for weeks"- I guess this means that the Rulons conquered Valoria. A pretty simple episode that also doesn't really have as much of a central concept as a bunch of stuff happens, and Krulos falls for the old "Swapped Macguffin" technique.

Episode Four: Yungstar gets shown up by a more responsible Aero (not a toy character), and gets pissy over it. A lot is made of Rulon traps and nets in this episode, as those were sold as add-ons to Rulon Dinosaurs. Newbie Neutrino has the gall to call a Quetzalcoatlus pair "these birds", while Ace tries to teach Air Tactics to the crew (including a petulant Gunner, squirming in his chair like a toddler in a strange bit of art direction). Yungstar is hurt by Rulons while flying next to a volcano, and soon an Elasmosaurus pops out of the magma (the FFFFUUUUUUUUU---???), delaying him from the battle. Hammerhead rides a giant Pteranodon (large enough to create WIND STORMS with its wings!) and curries Krulos' favor as we discover that poor Rasp is both jealous, and utterly unable to beat Questar in a fight (at one point, Questar holds him in the air with ONE HAND while Rasp just kicks his feet like a little kid). The bad guys start to win until the good guys make a comeback, and Yungstar & Aero team up to blast off the Giant Pteranodon's Brain Box. Oddly, there's no attempt at a moral about togetherness or Yungstar learning not to be a hot-shot- the two fliers just argue, then later make up.

Episode Five: Llahd shows up and makes a mess of things for everyone by trying too hard and showboating, thus giving us our central story. They make a big deal out of the grey Torosaurs of the Valorians, as they first do some live-fire excercises, then the Rulon Triceratopses show up and it's a Ceratopsian Show-Down. This actually turns into the single-biggest fight of the show so far, as Torosaurs rain Hell, but soon it's Krulos's T-Rex versus Gunnur & Tagg in the Torosaurus in a HUGE brawl, as they shoot at each other, grapple, bite (the Toro bites Rex's tail) and knock each other around for a solid couple minutes! Gunnur even gets a knockdown with the weird Tripping Mechanism on his Torosaurus!

Llahd's Pterodactyl looks HUGE here- like eight feet tall with a twenty-foot wingspan! The real animal (Pterodactylus) is about the weight of a KITTEN. Llahd is the only guy not to do great in the battle, so he runs off to be a hero himself. Gunnur & Tagg soon show up to help now that the entire base is out looking for him (thus provoking a Rulon attack), and climb down a steep cliff to save a baby Torosaurus- did they forget that Llahd brought a flying mount? Soon the Rulons mount their second giant attack THAT DAY, and it's a huge brawl, with a Triceratops throwing a Stegosaurus by its tail, Styracosaurs jobbing all over the place, and Llahd sees off three Pteranodons at once with a single Missile Salvo! The Torosaurs the gang saved earlier come to save the team from an absolute rout of the base, and chase off poor Krulos. Llahd thus learns the importance of teamwork instead of grandstanding.

Well, perhaps they're being somewhat consistent with portraying these dinosaurs as immune to laser weaponry.

-The Pachycephalosaurus was a 2nd series toy that was done quite well, and showed up a bit on the TV show (including a sort-of Focus Episode for Tagg, the Token Black Guy who generally didn't have many personality traits or interesting characteristics- a common failing of black cartoon characters, especially back in the 1980s). Of course it used its head like a massive battering ram, causing avalanches, earthquakes and shattering stone like it was made out of particle board, so it's obviously a fantastical version of the famous creature. Real Pachycephalosaurs probably didn't use the head QUITE like that (their anatomy doesn't really support full-blown charges), but it's a cartoon where telepathic riders fire laser beams from giant saddles on top of them, so it's obviously not that big a deal.

-The toy was well-detailed, like the comparable Saurolophus for the Rulons. It has way fewer pieces and tiny bits, so its WAY easier to find intact online- the "pounder" structure on the saddle is one solid piece that's relatively durable. It's the same size in the toys, but the show's a bit different.

-It's a bit smaller than the Saurolophus in the show (like in real life), but hits PL 8 thanks to the super-gigaton headbutt. The Blasters are pretty mediocre given how big the animal is, but it's also got those Pounders up front that could hammer away at something like a jackhammer. Tagg himself is a pretty generic Valorian (a less-flawed version of Yungstar, really).

Were the DinoRiders toys ever reused? Vague memories, but that line was the same size as MASK rather than GI Joe/Star Wars, right?

I vaguely remember a Jurassic Park series.

The toys were considered so accurate that they were re-used for the Smithsonian museum line. The T-Rex, however, may have inspired the creation of Toy Story's green Rex.

-Saurolophus isn't an obvious choice for a toy: it's one of the most generic "prey" dinosaurs seen in the media (most Triceratops are given a fighting chance- one of THESE things on the other hand...), which makes it all the cooler for inclusion. However, I'd probably still have went with a Parasaurolophus (the recognizably-crested one), or a larger variant for a cooler toy. Also, it's kind of a wussie Dinosaur to be given to one of the VILLAINS, but there you go. Not a bad-looking toy, either- it's beautifully designed, and has a swell side-saddle thingie. Lokus is one of the more unique Rulon villains, showing up only rarely, often just to take orders (in another, he's in charge of building a dam to block the Dino-Riders' water). He was a bug guy, but not like Antor, and had a more expressionless face. Likely he's a Locust or something, but who knows?

-The Saurolophus is one of the hardest Dino-Riders creatures to find intact- that armature he has features a LOT of pieces, with a saddle that can swivel all the way around the toy, a seat that hooks to the swivel, guns for the seat, and more. The Brain Box in particular is a tough find- the head of the animal is rather small, and the Brain Box thin and purple. I found a complete Saurolophus... minus the Brain Box. Good luck finding THAT by itself without paying a ton in shipping. Lokus himself also goes for quite a lot- about $25 by himself- most of his recolors are the same way. Expect a fully-loaded Saurolophus to cost the same as a Triceratops (which is about four or five times as large).

-Either of these animals could be from Growth 4 to 8 given the size they're shown at in the toys (roughly 12 feet long without the tail), but their light builds result in a happy medium. But that happens a bit with this show, for toy reasons (nobody's going to harass mom & dad for a freakin' SAUROLOPHUS that costs 30 bucks because it's the size of a T-Rex).

Armour: Protection 2 (large metal structure over body) (2)
Weaponry: Pod Guns (Blast 5), Multiple Missiles & Laser Blasters (Blast 10- Multiattack), Tail Blades (+1 to Thagomizer) (41)

-The Stegosaurus was a very good likeness, and had a TON of gear on it- tiny missiles, blasters and more. It had generic guys coming with it, too (Vega & Tark? Really?), who never appeared in the series at all. The Stegos were in a couple episodes, but of course like in reality they were always overshadowed by the classic Ceratopsians (but in it's debut, it was given an impressive showing against the Tyrannosaurus, doing a solid job of holding it to a standstill). One of the Big Six dinos, it's actually surprising they held off till the Second Series to make one, but I guess they couldn't have thrown the entirety of the awesome stuff right of the gate, could they?

-The Stegosaurus toy will fetch Triceratops-like prices on eBay- he matches the Kentrosaurus in size, but also has a "walking" feature. His riders are horribly generic (only Tark shows up briefly in the show), and go for nothing.

-The Dino-Rider Stegosaurus is upgraded to a PL 10 super-heavyweight, and actually uses Armour in the form of a giant plate on the front end. It's got some of the heaviest artillery on any Dinosaur as well, with tons of Mini-Missiles, pronged lasers, etc., thus making it one of the best war machines around. It's only weakness is the lack of cool riders- if Questar or somebody is in the saddle, the enemy is in deep crap.

-OH MY FREAKING GOD I LOVE THIS TOY!! I never saw this one as a kid, but just look at it. It's beautiful. If I could make love to any toy, it would most certainly be this one. A beautifully sculpted rarely-seen Dinosaur in Kentrosaurus (thus giving the Rulons a necessary Counter-Dino to the Valorians' Stegosaurus), given appropriate giant size, then an awesome-looking floating-plate look (rather that just slapping some plates or straps to it and calling it a day like many of the bigger breeds)... this is so awesome. And his mount is Krok, the most rarely-seen of Lord Krulos' four Generals! Krok was the only one who was remotely loyal, which of course made him the Butt Monkey of the rest of the cast.

-The Kentrosaurus toy is HUGELY-detailed, and has a ton of distinctive "shields" all over the figure, complete with tiny, fragile "connector bits", a miniature Brain Box (smaller even than the Pteranodon's), and a three-piece Tail Club. All of this, of course, means that this thing is REALLY, REALLY DIFFICULT to find intact- if you don't buy a complete one, you're basically dooming yourself to shell out a fortune on the other bits.

-More or less similar to the Stegosaurus (a real Kentrosaurus is PL 7 and only Growth 2- this one is SERIOUSLY upped to the point where it towered over the Edmontonia), Kentrosaurus has a few bonuses- it's a bit smaller, but the SIX-pronged Thagomizer evens them out, and it's harness is very different, having a massive array of huge blaster-cannons all over the place to make for some ranged attacks (one guy can fire the main Cannons and his own seat's guns for +9 Multiattack damage, and the other can fire his Pod's cannons for +7).

Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +8

Complications:
Enemy (The Rulon Empire)- The Rulons have conquered Valoria, and are chasing after the remnants.
Responsibility (Pacifism)- Valorian culture is highly-pacifistic, and they do not naturally crave war. They also do not wish to harm dinosaurs, even the Rulons' slaves.
Relationship (Serena)- Mind-Zei is close to Serena, his only living relative.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 8 (126)

-Mind-Zei was an old man (and Serena's grandfather), and despite being blind, he could "see" everything around him with mystical telepathic martial arts stuff. Generally, he was the Wise Old Master archetype to a T, helping leader Questar out of every jam possible with his perfect advice, and we got tons of episodes where he showed off his capabilities. Like Serena, he was usually with someone else's dinosaur, usually the Diplodocus (he came with that toy, along with two other repaints in Separate Figure form). He can beat up three Rulons at once, take a super-elite shot at a Brain Box (in the Series I comic, he does just that to Krulos' T-Rex), and more. Sometimes he even just happens to "know" stuff, like sensing people are close.

-Mind-Zei has two Recolors in the 2-packs, both still called Mind-Zei, which is a bit unusual- even Serena has one called "Ursus". You'd think just painting one's beard black would be enough to give you an all-new character. In any case, they're all pretty similar-looking, sporting the same hair, white eyes and blue-ish outfit. Even the "rarest" of the three (with a blue/light blue suit) is pretty cheap on eBay.

I probably said this before, but I'm fine with the posts coming at a fast rate if they're mostly/all reposts or if it's a set that would take a really long time at the normal rate.

Okay, cool. Sometimes I worry I'm burying people in a backlog they'll never crawl out of, and sometimes I worry that I'll eventually RUN OUT of stuff to post, and will have wished I didn't post them so fast... but other times, I feel lazy for re-posting stuff (even though in cases like this, I actually add paragraphs to many of the bios- for the toys, I actually include my travails in buying them now that I'm an adult with disposable income :)).

Yeah, this set is more of interest as a set, more than individuals. I can't imagine there are many people who are eager to post on every single character posted.

I was mostly joking about the dino blast. And as far as running out of things to stat, that will never, ever, happen. You still have a lot of DC stuff to do, you haven't touched the Valiant, Dynamite and much of the Image-verse outside of Invincible, there is Star Wars, Star Trek, the Matrix, the MCU, the DCEU versions, dozens of anime/manga things, Marvel introduces a new character every 30 seconds and between all the new content that Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and other streaming services produce, there never ever not be anything left to build.

And don't use that "I'm not interesting in such and such" excuse either, mister! You hooked us on the juice, so you have to keep it coming. Now get cracking on the those Gilligan's Island builds! :D
