Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Trying to go straight didn't work out for Magmaniac or Tether Tyrant.
Responsibility (Speaks to the Tether)- The Tether is actually a living creature, and it speaks to him. It also wishes for a permanent union- when he acedes, the creature takes over his mind, rendering him MUCH stronger and more powerful.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 55 / Defenses: 12 (107)

-Tether Tyrant's one of the more interesting occasional Invincible villains, being a guy whose entire gimmick rests on an Evil Harness made out of Evil Bubblegum that ensnares people at range. Otherwise, he looks like a big ugly hobo, but he's also super-strong (since Mark actually FEELS his punches). It seems that his harness is kind of alive and stuff, too, but we never really went in-depth into him. He just appears from time to time as a disinctive background menace, usually ensnaring an annoyed hero before getting punched out. In Invincible #83, he and Magmaniac ally with Titan one more time, and try to assassinate Machine Head. When Magmaniac is killed in the assault, a heartbroken Tyrant finally accepts the "Tether" being's wishes, and fuses with it. Trapped within the creature's mind, he fights for control, only to realize he'd spent four hours tearing a city apart, with the Guardians of the Globe being unable to stop him. He takes control just long enough to give up the fight. He appears only one more time in a single panel.

-Tether Tyrant's one of the few PL 9 generic background villains, since his Snare is so effective. He can even grapple guys like Invincible with it for short periods of time, and he can slug it out as well, but he's still pretty limited.

-Magnattack's another one-shot villain with a pretty unique power- he uses control over metals to form a suit of floating plates around his body, allowing him to shoot them out at high speeds and protect himself. Pretty much nothing else is known about him, aside from the fact that Mark could house him within three seconds. It's actually quite hilarious- Kirkman specifies in the fifth TPB collection that "I really wanted to expand Mark's Rogues Gallery", and all that work consists of creating and naming some guys who then immediately lose to the hero. Magnattack in particular vanishes for YEARS after this- probably because he is by far the hardest character to draw (FLOATING PLATES? Jeezus). He shows up a couple of times later, but only in casual background moments- Best Tiger threatens him to find info about other villains, and he's badly beaten by Le Bruiser for starting a dog-fighting ring. Here, in the Invincible Universe appearance, he has an upgraded suit with explosive metal plates (and reveals that he's a Powersuit Guy after all)... but Bruiser simply "fetches" the first one, and throws it back in the villain's face. It's actually pretty likely he was killed.

-Magnattack's power is pretty easy to figure out once you put down what it actually is- initially it seemed like they were just some Powers limited by their Source Flaw, but his IU appearance revealed he was just a Powersuit guy. His Power Loss comes from the fact that he actually has to shoot out his own protective plates, meaning he'd run out eventually- he just needs a round of resting or otherwise not doing anything to recover his lost plates, and he's good to go again. He can put himself entirely within his own plate-field to become Impervious, but he can't move much inside it if that's the case.

War Woman II

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

WAR WOMAN II
Role:
One-Off Threat

-The original War Woman was a weapon-wielding Wonder Woman rip-off from the original Guardians of the Globe. This one is the lover of the first (seen briefly in the two-page story introducing her), and was shattered by the death. She decided to find the amazonian tribe from which War Woman hailed, trained with them, and then attacked the Guardians for not being there for her. Her troops easily fought off the Guardians, and she prepared to slay El Chupacabra with her axe. The suicidal, alcoholic superhero welcomed death, but his teammate Cast Iron leapt in front of it, taking a fatal wound.

-War Woman is presumably very strong, and probably has magical weapons. She's probably a PL 9 threat.

Offense:
Unarmed +10 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +0, Fortitude +0, Will +8

Complications:
Relationship (Jessica & Brittany Jr.- Wife & Son)- Brit is happily married, with an autistic son.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 110 / Defenses: 9 (191)

-Okay, is it weird that I absolutely find Brit to be the most dull, boring, annoying part of Invincible? I mean, he's got the most generic look a superhero ever got, powers that are DESIGNED to make every fight more boring, and we're never really given any indication as to why we should care about him, yet there he is- in the back ground of story after story, taking up space. Screw Brit.

-Brit comes off weirdly in Invincible. He's actually a prior Robert Kirkman creation, but as someone who never read Brit, you constantly go "why do I care about this guy, again?" He's really a nothing character in this book, just sort of showing up, being invincible, and maybe saying something casual and derogatory (and his wife comes off as really awful, as well). He barely ever features at all. Apparently he had a regular feature in 2007 after having some one-shots here and there years earlier, but he ultimately failed due to low sales (Kirkman blames the shipping schedule- something he blamed himself for, as he was shouldering four books at once back then). He comes off a bit better in Guarding the Globe, in that he seems to care for his agents and his family, but his continued failures as leader don't endear me to the character. He ends up fighting Robot's revolution, but then ultimately goes to his side, confessing that it's improved the world.

-Brit is what happens when you combine a Secret Agent build with someone who is totally impossible to harm. Unlike many such characters, he's only or normal human strength. In the Guarding the Globe series, he wore some Rocket Boots and Rocket Gloves that gave him Strength-Damage +4 and some ugly-looking Flight.

Complications:

Enemy (Red Rush)- Before Red Rush was killed, he appeared to be an enemy of his fellow Russian.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 11 (107)

-Kursk is another one-note villain, an enemy of the Flash-Expy Red Rush, who got hired on to beat up Invincible one time. It didn't work. He's popped up in many background scenes, usually for a joke about his accent (Mark: "Get back in there!" Kursk: *runs back into jail* "IS SORRY!").

-Kursk is a generic, pretty weak Blaster, lacking extremely powerful abilities (Area Extras or Penetrating) on his Blast, and having few Skills or Advantages to back him up. I chose to go with the possible "naval submarine officer in an accident" origin from The Official Handbook to the Invincible Universe since it gave me the most of either to work with. Otherwise, he's an extremely poor man's Electro.

Powers:
"Viltrumite Physiology"
"Flying Brick"
Flight 10 (2,000 mph) [20]
"That Super-Speed Stuff They Eventually Started Ignoring" Quickness 2 [2]

"Flies In Space"
Immunity 3 (Heat, Cold, Pressure) [3]

Immunity 4 (Aging, Suffocation, Radiation, Disease) (Flaws: Limited to Half-Effect) [2]

Initiative +11

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +13, Fortitude +13, Will +6

Complications:
Responsibility (The Viltrumite Empire)- Viltrumites are bound by duty and their society to take over worlds. The believe that only the strong should survive, live very lonely, insular lives, and have several unique customs.
Responsibility (Viltrumite Rage)- All Viltrumites get angry very quickly, and restraining themselves in times of anger is extremely difficult.
Weakness (High-Level Sonics)- Viltrumites require inner-ear stability in order to fly, and can be incapacitated by certain degrees of sonic pulses.
Quirk (Must Wear a Mustache)- All adult male Viltrumites wear mustaches.

Total: Abilities: 90 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 10 (157)

-This is, terrifyingly, the "Rank and File" of the main Viltrumite hordes. They appear to be in great numbers in the beginning of the series- Mark and Nolan are faced with THREE of them on the Thraxan homeworld, and a few others show up in the aftermath. However, it turns out that the "Scourge Virus" has left them numbering less than FIFTY- this means that each life is precious.

-Viltrumites are horrifyingly powerful- at the point Mark meets his first non-father Viltrumites, he is arguably the most powerful hero on Earth, yet is easily outpaced and overpowered by a single unnamed male. Omni-Man himself is basically crippled trying to fight three of them. Years later, during the Viltrumite War, Mark has upgraded in PL, but doesn't manage to defeat any of them by himself- only Allen, Omni-Man, Space Racer and Battle Beast are shown doing so. They have a few limits, and some are stronger than others- Allen punches one in the stomach so hard his fist goes out the guy's mouth, and he has to shake the hollowed-out corpse off his arm. Battle Beast slays one on a Viltrumite Prison Ship, but his brawl with Thula during the Viltrumite War goes without a victor.

Various Viltrumites Seen:

Image

THULA (aka "The One With The Hair-Knife"):
-Given a name, making her invulnerable to Backgrounder Death, Thula wears a long braid and has a sword-like blade tied to the end of it, which she uses as a melee weapon. She is powerful enough that a fight between her and Battle Beast in space had no victor, but is a mere Backgrounder in other battles- her distinctive appearance and the fact that she actually has a name giving her a measure of survivability. She has the lightest hair of any Viltrumite female- being light grey.

Image

LUCAN (aka "The Black One"):
-Seen as one of the three who attack Mark & Nolan on the Mantis People's planet- he is nearly killed by Nolan (copping to always falling for sneak attacks, implying this holds him back from promotion), but survives and cripples him with a blow to the back (while holding in his own guts, nonetheless). Survives the Viltrumite War and breeds children on Earth, but disobeys his Grand Regent by refusing to mate with more than one human. "My mate has been... HURT before" by one who was unfaithful, he says, and he does not wish to bring her pain. He, like the others, has been changed by his time on Earth. Despite being a distinctive Viltrumite (the only black one seen), his name is only given in ONE ISSUE- the twenty-ninth. He then goes so long without a name that I actually had to look it up.

Image

BROWN-HAIRED GUY:
-Notable for being the lightest-haired non-old Viltrumite- every other adult has very, very dark hair, save for elders like Conquest and Thaedus (Nolan himself has grayed temples). He's a bit burly and bulky, and easily kicks Mark's ass in their fight on Mantia, pumelling him and preparing to strangle him to death. He even gives a little speech about how many Viltrumites enjoy dismembering their foes ("Truthfully, I think they just like to make a MESS."). Unfortunately for him, Nolan deals with HIS Viltrumite in the brawl, and immediately flies in, crushes his throat, and headbutts his eye out of its socket. He is seen in a body bag later- these were wounds he couldn't recover from.

Image

WEIRD-HEADED GUY:
-Sporting a very inhuman-looking head, this guy joined Lucan & Brown-Haired Guy on Mantia, and fought with Omni-Man for a good long time. He disrespects Lucan, thinking him dead ("I always knew he was WEAK") and taunts Nolan exceptionally well, promising him a painful death while talking about how they destroyed Mantia "To PISS YOU OFF!" However, Omni-Man eventually overpowers him, blowing out his eardrums with a double-fist attack. He appears to have survived, whispering "It is done" into his communicator before passing out. We do not see him again, as far as I can tell.

MOP-TOP GUY:
-With a luxurious mop of hair, this burly, young-looking fellow was one of two Viltrumites on the Prison Ship, and was intended to give Nolan his ceremonial Execution-By-Punching. He states that he deeply respected Nolan for his past as a great warrior, and is extremely disappointed that it's come to this. When their ship is destroyed, he is left out alone against Battle Beast. His opponent freezes in space, but we next see him as a frozen corpse, having been torn apart by the savage warrior.

GUY WHO GETS SKOOSHED:
-The other prison guard/executioner, he was forced to fight Nolan and Allen the Alien solo- with Allen's new power upgrade, he stood no chance. The narration (actually rare for this series- you typically never saw such things in Invincible) does this big spiel over how this guy has a long, proud history, a name, and more, but that he didn't deserve an anonymous fate like this- Allen & Nolan punch him in the head simultaneously, detonating his skull and sending his brain flying into space. "How strong ARE you?" says a shocked Nolan. "VERY" replies a smug, smirking Allen, blood on his fist.

WILD-HAIRED GUY:
-REALLY burly and strong, he was seen flying around on a homeworld that'd been going through a battle against Coalition of Planets forces. He was later one-shotted by Space Racer's gun, though someone who looks like him pops up at Nolan's crowning.

VILTRUMITE WAR VICTIMS:
-These guys were usually just "flying mustached dudes", and tended not to do anything by fly about in the background. A handful of them were slain by Space Racer, while Ragnars killed at least one more (and possibly mortally-wounded others). It's likely they are much less powerful than the PL 12s, likely hitting PL 10-11.

OTHERS:
-A few older-looking Viltrumites are seen in medical roles in a very late issue. A handful of others are seen flying around in background scenes, but never given names. One of the largest conglomerations takes place when Nolan is taken away on the Thraxan homeworld, as there's about a dozen of them in a single panel- this is probably before Kirkman decided that there were less than fifty left in the universe.

IMPORTANT CHARACTERS: Anissa, General Kregg, Conquest, Nolan, Mark, Grand Regent Thragg, Oliver
-These guys are all characters of some importance, and will thus receive actual bios.

OCTOBOSS
Role:
Background Villain

-Octoboss is the incredibly cool-looking bad guy who pops up in the background of some Invincible issues- he's rather powerful, but generally the kind of threat most heroes can deal with while engaging in conversations with each other. A running gag is his lack of ability with the English language, saying stuff like "Octoboss am going to kill you!" and stuff like that. When a minion asks why they're using that language, Octoboss merely replies "PRACTICE!". He's probably around PL 10- 10/10 durability, strength & accuracy. Plus "Aquatic" stuff and some extra limbs for his face-tentacles.

I love Octoboss. He's everything a recurring one-shot villain should be. Just enough background and characterization to make him interesting in small doses. Definitely the kind of villain that wouldn't hold up well if used to frequently.

I never liked the Viltrumites much. I wish they had been dealt with and the book moved on to something else rather than that storyline being the entire reason for the comic

Complications:
Relationship (Parents)- Eve's parents are absolutely nuts. Her mom is a total doormat, and her dad is a boorish ass. So much so that he praises Mark for dating Eve "even though she's not a virgin", but needles him that it's not all bad- she must have picked up SOME sexual skills from that Rex Splode kid, right? RIGHT? Mark is of course mortified, and realizes why Eve can't stand her parents.
Relationship (Rex Splode)- Rex was Eve's first boyfriend, and her first EVERYTHING. She was crushed when he cheated on her, and treated him like shit every time they met afterwards, even once he apologized and tried to make up for it. Because of this, she was extra-shattered at hearing the news of his death.
Relationship/Obsession (Mark Grayson- Invincible)- Eve has loved Mark desperately since they were teens- a "Future Version" of herself went nuts over it (risking the time-stream in the process). Periods of being away from him have resulted in abortion, sexy obesity, and anorexia- her emotional dependency is staggering. Finally, the two settle down, have a child, and get married.
Relationship (Terra)- Eve is a stern, protective parent.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 30--13 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 126 / Defenses: 14 (210)

Atom Eve- Ideal Girlfriend (sort of):
-Atom Eve is our main female character, debuting early on as Mark's superheroic partner- more experienced, and a member of The Teen Team, she kind of introduces Invincible to super-heroics as a whole. Everyone naturally assumes Mark's into her ("You know she's dating Rex, right?"), and that they'll get together once she finds out that her boyfriend Rex Splode is cheating on her ("It was Dupli-Kate! And there was more than one of her!"), but Mark resists this, and ends up dating Amber. This leads to a thing where it's clear that Eve digs Mark (she pouts when he's with Amber), especially once she dumps his pal William (Amber figures out that she's dating William only to get close to Mark). Mark, being a guy, is dumbfounded by all of this, until a future version of Even DESPERATELY begs him to tell Eve where his affections lie regarding her. A shocked Mark suddenly realizes that Eve has been into him for quite a while. This ends a huge amoung of "Shipping" from the fans, who'd pretty much been begging for this since Eve debuted (she was the first and only female Mark interacted with AT ALL aside from his mother).

-Mark can't decide between both women at first, but ultimately chooses Eve when it's clear that his lifestyle is unfair to Amber. The two... I dunno, I never really felt the chemistry so much. They never really DATED, and their own "thing in common" (super-heroics) soon turns into "Mark doing super-heroics on his own while Eve worries", because his power level soon outstrips hers. They say they're in love, they start having sex, etc., but mostly it seems to be Eve being obsessed with Mark, and Mark being super-protective of Eve. And that's really their entire relationship.

-A fan wrote in (when Eve was thought-killed by Conquest) that Eve was "What most comic fans imagine the ideal woman to be", and I realized he was basically correct- Eve is a gorgeous redhead with a comic-book physique (The Most Common Super-Power), is an experienced & confident heroine, playful and sexual, but completely devoted to her man. This meant a lot of fans FELT IT when they thought she died. And constantly wrote in complaining when she got chubby. Even though Kirkman himself is really obese, and they were clearly making a point about body-image, looks and all that good stuff (basically, it was pointed out that she was a bit unhealthy, but that this didn't make her HIDEOUS or unlovable or anything).

Eve the Loon:
-One odd thing that gets glossed over most of the time is that Eve is REALLY GODDAMN NUTS. A lot of readers were infatuated with her (and with good reason- Ryan Ottley usually has a very small number of women to draw, so puts a LOT of emphasis on Eve's curves), and everyone in the comic seems to like her, but all of the various things she does really point to a dangerously-obsessive personality regarding Mark. She's basically infatuated with him, despite his "dumb guy" personality, to the point where her future self has practically gone insane because she never knew whether or not he liked her ("Tell her you love her! Tell her you HATE her! Tell her ANYTHING!"). Every time he disappears off-world for a while, something happens due to her overwhelming emotional dependency:

-During the Viltrumite War, she gets an abortion (unwilling to raise the baby alone if Mark dies or disappears) and gains a bunch of weight. And despite Mark promising that he loves her no matter her size, and that he LIKES her new curves (and holy GOD am I with him on that one), she acts so completely miserable and hostile all the time that it's hard to appreciate her. The NEXT time Mark disappears for a time, Eve instead LOSES a ton of weight, apparently nearly starving herself to death out of stress, and she dumps Mark. It's to the point where Dupli-Kate predicts the end of her relationship to Mark ("I love Eve, but she just can't hold down a man"). Peculiarly, Kate is the only one around who seems to notice this- the rest of the time, it's just Mark worrying about her, or others going "there, there" while she worries. Like, the woman is CRAZY!!

Later Eve:
-Atom Eve does a bit more stuff in the series- she is nearly crippled during The Invincible War, and is basically pulped to death by Conquest immediately thereafter. This sends Mark into his first "Unstoppable Rampage of Revenge" moment, as he literally smashes the villain's face in while his own arms are crippled, but it turns out that Eve has "Last-Second Ass-Pull Super-Powers" and is temporarily amped-up when she's returning from near-death. She gets chubby (oh so cuddly) when Mark disappears into The Viltrumite War, then gets anorexic when he disappears next time.

-The two eventually abandon Earth and have their daughter, Terra, once Robot takes over the planet... but then Mark gets trapped in another time-thing for years, resulting in Eve raising their daughter alone on Talescria for a while (TIME-SKIP!). At least by this point Eve has matured and stabilized- I guess motherhood agrees with her. Her "Ass-Pull" power is a literal plot-point next time, as she & Mark are mashed to pieces, but she immediately resurrects the two of them, this time giving Mark his very last power-boost so Kirkman doesn't have to time-skip us AGAIN. Near the end of the series, after Oliver is killed, she finally gives Mark the dressing-down he needs, insulting his reckless behavior and impulsive stupidity, but confessing that "I hate just how much I LOVE you despite it all!". Eventually, the two really marry.

Eve's Powers:
-Atom Eve has energy transmutation powers to a level that Robot describes as "ridiculous", essentially being able to rewrite all matter and form whatever she wants. She created a beautiful house from random stuff, and can make food from nothing, meaning she wants for nothing, and is probably the most useful superhero on Earth outside of combat situations. She's functionally immortal, raising herself from the dead TWICE during the course of the book, and basically proving it once and for all in the end. Her Force Field is strong enough to withstand a ton of damage, but her limits are well below the Viltrumites of the series. She gains Attractive because she's actually pretty good at negotiating stuff with male characters, but female ones tend to not get along with her so well. Also, Curvy Eve is hotter than Skinny Eve- COME AT ME, BRO!!!

No, not at all. I think it's very good. Even you don't always agree with the direction it takes, it's obvious that it's much more carefully plotted than most of the Marvel or DC comics.
