Agreed. Though I still want Ottley to draw it!

-Named after a real-life renegade, the Apache Kid was one of Marvel's numerous attempts at cashing on on the Western craze in comics. He was a bit different, in that he was a white kid who was raised by the Apache chief Red Hawk, and did a modification of the old "Mighty Whitey" trope by acting like a white cowboy by day, then donning warpaint by nightfall to combat outlaws of both races. Unlike many other cowboy books, the "Indians" weren't just standard enemies (like Orcs in Dungeons & Dragons or something), but were evil just as often as the white men could be. The book was semi-successful, lasting for sixteen issues over six years (not bad for a '50s book from the then-Atlas Comics), but he eventually disappeared, showing up later only in reprints.
-The Apache Kid is more or less what happens when you take a typical Cowboy Hero and slap some Native American stuff onto him. PL 7 seems alright- he wasn't a major star or anything.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 8 (100)
-Andy Prentiss is a camper who was sent off on a "Snipe Hunt" (for a "Wampus") as a prank, but ended up gaining super-powers from a mysterious light. Calling himself Illuminator, he fights some crime, and is given a motorcycle helmet by a biker named Gus, who assumes he's been given his powers by God. He deals with local drug dealers, and helps out some of his friends and family. That's it. That's his entire bio. This goofball appeared in HIS OWN LIMITED SERIES, this being 1993 when they were just shoveling ANYTHING onto the market (as opposed to now, where they... um... never mind). It was actually released in conjunction with Nelson, a company devoted to Christian books, explaining his origins a little bit.
-Illuminator has some pretty basic powers, and is entirely an amateur hero (appearing only three times), but hits PL 8 with that Dazzle.

so why these guys? Illuminator I discovered after posting the "I" names already. Apache Kid should have been posted after I re-posted the Cowboys, but I skipped him by mistake.

-Thunderclap is just some British guy who cobbled together some gear from the inventions of others. He causes massive property damage with his piston-like gloves, but blames Spidey for it. I have no idea what the deal is with this guy- he showed up in Marvel UK's stuff, harassed Spider-Man in one issue, then vanished forever after blaming Spidey for the property damage his own gloves caused. Forever... until Civil War: Frontline, which used him as a background character, accidentally killing the nobody hero Bantam by throwing him into a gas truck, which exploded. So two appearances for this loser.
He's a PL 9 idiot who could never hope to challenge anyone without his powerful Area Effects, making him problematic in public places (his powers damage everything around him).

Life is so cruel sometimes ;~)
My vote is Pegasus.
Thragg being the final foe just seemed off to me.
I mean, they already beat him pretty easily and then they let him go because... Nolan wanted to prove a point. I think that point backfired.
I was always curious to know how Thragg got to be so tough and powerful compared to his fellows. They never so much as hinted at it, but it seemed related to his upbringing. And he certainly was head and shoulders above the others.
One of the things that Kirkman did (and promptly lost interest in and forgot) that interested me was indicating that Mark wasn't necessarily weaker because he was half human, but because he didn't push himself to the limits. Omni-Man indicated that it was like building muscles, if he wanted to fly faster he needed to push himself to his limits.
There was even a panel or two of them showing Mark pumping weights and flying around the planet trying to get better. Sadly this was all forgotten in favor of DBZ powerup near the end. Which is a shame, it probably would have meant more if Mark earned that power up.
Okay, I give Kirkman a lot of crap about the series, but the truth is I really enjoyed it for some time. Eventually the cracks started to show and I lost interest. And a lot of my issues with the book is more in regards to failed potential than it was to it actually being bad.
It just could have been more.
Though I'm almost surprised that Jab didn't post up Brit's sister. Old Lady face on bombshell body seems like something Jab would have no issues getting behind.
I say almost surprised because she only showed up in Brit's series, and Jab didn't like Brit so I bet he didn't know about her ;~)

Re:
Oh, it got touched on, but only barely- Nolan mentions that he was bred from birth to be the most elite Viltrumite possible- given the best training and expertise. It was this that let him one-shot Nolan when he did- with Nolan warning everyone else to not engage him.Arkrite wrote: ↑Wed Mar 07, 2018 5:41 am Thragg being the final foe just seemed off to me.

Hah- oh yeah. Mark was training Oliver in this manner, pointing it out, but after the Viltrumite War, it just stopped mattering. It seems that Mark was getting naturally a bit tougher as time went on, but yeah- the DBZ Power-Up took place, and that was that. One of the things that Kirkman did (and promptly lost interest in and forgot) that interested me was indicating that Mark wasn't necessarily weaker because he was half human, but because he didn't push himself to the limits. Ugh- YES. THAT is what I was trying to get at before. It was the best superhero world-building I've ever seen done by a single creative team outside of Astro City. They felt like REAL CHARACTERS, and you wanted to see more of just about everyone. But I feel like outside of the Viltrumite War, we were always left with a little less of what we wanted.Okay, I give Kirkman a lot of crap about the series, but the truth is I really enjoyed it for some time. LOL- you are literally the third or fourth person to bring this to my attention. I think Ares, BsDigitalQ & Kreuzritter all did so as well . Yeah, she was pretty hot, but like all of Kirkman's OCs from other books, I found them lacking. Which is very weird, as I loved his 4th and 5th-tier Invincible characters. But... outside of Invincible, I just couldn't care less about his stuff. He always had a weakness for dialogue, and if it wasn't Classic Superhero, then I didn't give a rat's ass.Though I'm almost surprised that Jab didn't post up Brit's sister. Old Lady face on bombshell body seems like something Jab would have no issues getting behind.

Well that's good- it's always a concern when I stat something outside of "Mainstream Comic Books". Especially if it's a LONG set.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:35 amNot me.Jabroniville wrote: ↑Tue Mar 06, 2018 9:41 pm It has drawbacks, though- anyone who's never read or cared about Invincible was probably bored .

Re: Jab's Builds! (Kregg! Best Tiger! Chupacabra! Thragg! Battle Beast!)
Yeah, the statlines for the Viltrumites was a bit dull, especially because every one of them had the same fighting style- Kirkman had no real concept for fighting techniques, so everyone had two attacks- hitting, and hitting harder. So many Viltrumites just doing the "hand-poke" attack...Woodclaw wrote: ↑Tue Mar 06, 2018 11:49 pmI have a very conflicted interest in Invincible. the first tpb was great, but the series never really hooked me and I stopped being interested around the time they introduced Oliver.Jabroniville wrote: ↑Tue Mar 06, 2018 9:41 pm And that's in for the Invincible builds!! Probably the most work I've ever actually put into a single set, as far as reading goes- I've never read 140+ issues of a book in succession before. Though that was also done because I wanted to read the whole series again, I also felt the need to look up once-important characters, as online bios are always REALLY short on info for guys that never left a single book. It proved rather interesting and illuminating on some things (such as which plotlines got dropped- like the entities that had Mark go back in time to "fix" things), as well as making it more clear what the book's peak was (okay, it was always the Invincible/Viltrumite War Era, but this makes it REALLY obvious).
It's funny how one single book (and a 36-issue spin-off) can contain enough characters for me to spend THREE WEEKS posting builds. A difficult thing to replicate, outside of Astro City. It has drawbacks, though- anyone who's never read or cared about Invincible was probably bored .
Next up: Two days of random piles of stuff, largely to get builds off of the "ATT-only" exclusive list, and posted on here. I mean, who knows how long that old forum will be kept in operation by Green Ronin? They could axe it at any time! There'll also be a single original build, too. Then it's on to the next big set.
As a set of builds they are fine, but kind of limited, in the sense that most character fall into one of three categories:I so wish that either Kirkman or someone else would give this universe another run focusing on the Guardians of the Globe or another group outside of the main Mark-based shennanigas.
- flying bricks
- characters introduced in the first three TPB
- others
What's funny is I started off mostly with characters from the first TPBs, as they'd be most familiar, and went away the quickest. And the early part of the builds drew very little attention, to the point where I almost got spooked and just spammed them out, thinking this set would be unpopular.
