A bit of research online to refresh my memory, does give "catgirls" a little bit of historical reference, such as cat-like japanese youkai. Seems the first 'modern' instance of such was in a 1924 story. Interesting stuff.

But yeah I'd largely just consider her fanservice. ;P

Felicia is also a failed musical diva. Poor girl just can't get a break getting into the musical scene though she tries so very hard. Human prejudice just keeps getting in the way. *sniff*

That truly is the most tragic thing out of all this, that poor (cat)girl...

For reasons I'm not entirely clear on, I though of Felicia as cute instead of hot, despite basically looking like a naked fitness model with giant boobs.

Probably due to multiple factors: her personality and motivations. The playful cat-like behavior. Not acting in a sensual manner (specially in contrast to Morrigan). The big eyes and hair that could make the little mermaid envious. And probably also because of the giant paws. And the "occasionally dresses as a nun" thing, maybe.

I agree with all of this. Plus the coloring of the sprite honestly never looked that naked to me. I worry less about my young sons watching me play Felicia than I do playing Morrigan.

Years ago, I played her on the ATT boards. It was the first time that I was asked to tone down how I played a character.

When I saw the name "Felicia", I thought it was Valkyrie's old prison playmate. Ya know, that big girl Felicia who was the inmate boss and who gave Val a hard time....

I don't know. The biggest POTA character in my campaign was a catgirl whose Swedish-American born creator could never understand why she was never seen as sexy as he thought she was.

I just think it's a kink that some have and some don't.

"POTA"?

Though it's definitely a huge thing in Japan. They have a cultural thing with cats (the famous "Beckoning Cat", from the tale of the cat that beckoned a Samurai away from a disaster and thus ended up in every cheesy Japanese restaurant ever), and I think the "Ur-Examples" were the Puma Sisters from Dominion Tank Police. I remember hearing about them a LOT in my early Anime Fandom, as that was like THE THING as far as Fanservice went, unless you went the dark Overfiend-y route.

Also, fun fact (which I know I've shared before): The Internet is For Porn and Let It Go were written by the same person. Life is rad :).

Yeah, ok, "naked" is an exaggeration (well she IS naked, but her fur covers more than, say, a bikini). Still can look risque in some of her poses, though.

In-game sprite for reference:

I mean, I find her just adorable, but I'd understand if she was someone's "initiation" into a furry or catgirl fetishist.

EDIT: curiously, her official illustrations mostly show her with around C cup breasts, while she is like H or something in the sprite XD

Responsibility (The Children)- Jon has a soft spot for young children.
Weakness (Predictability)- Talbain, like all Darkstalkers, cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time he tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, he will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 12 + 13 / Powers: 21 / Defenses: 19 (149)

-Holy FREAKING CRAP, that is the most epic Werewolf design of all time. Screw that "Glabro/Crinos" form crap, THIS is where it's at as far as lycanthropy goes! Sadly, he was never quite as popular in Japan as he was overseas, where people really got into that bitchin' design, and so he doesn't factor into Darkstalkers-related media as much as Demitri, Morrigan or Felicia do. Jon is the result of a Werewolf/Human pairing, and his mother was killed by an enemy of his werewolf daddy, who never knew he existed. Feeling cursed by fate, he nonetheless refused to give in to his animal side, and devoted himself to fighting and pushing himself past his limits, in order to control the beast within.
-Apparently after Pyron's defeat, he was rendered human, but soon the curse returned. In Darkstalkers 3, he faced Dark Talbain and gained the ability to change shape at will, but resolved himself to still living as a wolf. Also, he uses some of Bruce Lee's techniques- BRUCE LEE AS A WEREWOLF, YOU GUYS.

Monster Basis: The legend of the Werewolf is well-known throughout European societies, but "Bestial Transformations" are common worldwide (such as the Japanese Kitsune- a fox-themed shapeshifter). In Europe, it covers a lot of the same ground Vampires do, but the most famous example by FAR is the tale of the Beast of Gevaudan, a huge wolf (seen by some to stand on two feet), who legitimately (ie. this is historical record, not myth) killed DOZENS of people throughout France over the course of several years. A few "Beasts" were shot, being revealed to be... pretty normal as wolves go, but nobody ever really figured out entirely what was going on. In the days before people routinely had guns, and women & children were often working in the fields alone, let's just say that wolves were one hell of a lot more dangerous to people. This is a huge part of the reasoning for Wolves' terrible reputation in most of European culture- chances are, if someone got eaten by an animal, it would have been at the jaws of a wolf. Oddly enough, stuff like silver, wolfsbane, etc., only came into prominence with the 1941 Monster Movie The Wolf Man (whose protagonist's father was named "Jon Talbot").

-Talbain fights much like Felicia, but uses a lot of straight-line-firing "Beast Cannons" (energizing himself and lashing out in one direction), often in multiple directions one after the other, to the point where it acts like a ricocheting weapon. He can also grab, Multiattack and go Anti-Air with a pair of his moves. One of his Supers is also a Line Damage weapon, so it gets statted separately. All in all, he's only a bit different from Felicia mechanically, but a bit stronger.

So has anyone ever done "Fighting Game"-style Original Characters? I've been working on a "Fighting Game System" for a while (meant to fit into an OC-hero 'verse, but also could theoretically be its own Fighting Game, with SF-style effects), off-and-on, and came up with a few characters, some more complicated or more well-thought-out than others:

* A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter sent by his father (the main teacher of the style) to defend it after the elder man was badly-injured fighting the current World Champion. He has an intense rivalry with his uncle & cousin, who believe that THEY should have been chosen. The fighter has to come to terms with his own feelings of inadequacy (his uncle actually IS more qualified), and prove to himself that he's worthy of the family legacy. Moves: Arm & Leg Holds (lower the capability of enemy attacks), Chokes, Reversals of Moves (Geese Howard-style), Wall Jump, Capoeria Kick (his father disapproves of such things, but he adopts some other fighting styles at-will), Helicopter Throw.

* A pro Boxer considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in history (he's around the 160-175 lb. range), who walks away from the most successful career imaginable due to disrespect tossed at his style by more "legit" arts, and the rise of Street Fighter-style fighting (which usually features low-tier Boxers as scrubs). Now he defends Boxing against the naysayers and Chi-Wielding fighters, proving that an elite boxer can hang with any style in the world. Moves: Anti-Air Punch, Heart Punch (Distracting, but Stuns foes), Liver Blow (high power, but only as a counter to high-reaching moves), Power Dash, Blitz (Multiattack).

* The White Tiger, a Luchadore who uses an agile, flip & flop fighting style. His unique trick is that choosing the "different colors" (resulting in a rename) makes him a slightly different kind of fighter: White Tiger (Acrobatic), Red Tiger (Fire Breath), Black Tiger (Stronger), Pink Tiger (Extra Energy/Super Meter with Taunts), Yellow Tiger (Submission-type moves), Blue Tiger (Better Reversals), Green Tiger (Heelish Cheating Moves), Orange Tiger (Tougher). Moves: Wall Jump, Suplexes, Submissions.

* A female, French Savate expert who wears a body-covering outfit, boots & gloves because her Chi powers are actually dangerous to her- activating them through bare skin has caused massive burns to part of her arm, and so instead she "channels" the Chi through her uniform, and through a handful of minor weapons, such as a small chain or marbles. Moves: Fire Chain, Fire Marbles (activates on ground), Fire Arc Kick, Fire Sweep.

* A Polynesian, tattooed guy with a regular job (accountant) who is a highly-skilled Geokinetic, fighting like an Earthbender in Avatar. Moves: Stone Fists (lasts for a few hits), Earth Shield (lasts on the ground for a while), Foot Trap (like how Toph used to snatch people's feet in Avatar), Earthquake-type moves, Rock-Assisted Leap, Stone Strike.

* A British punker (I hate punkers) who was permanently blinded and disfigured after an attack from a rival gang. He found peace through Dim Mak & meditation, becoming a high-powered Chi Fighter "Punk Monk", wearing Asian-style robes despite a tattooed body. Sees via "Chi", and fights to promote the message of his new people. Moves: Wooden Staff Strike, Chi Ball, Chi Deflection, Stuns, Bouncing Chi Ball (timed explosion), Delayed Effects (like Fist of the North Star's "You're already dead") that can be set off later.

* A 6'8" female (oh shut up, you can't be surprised) bodyguard using Jeet Kune Do as part of her job. Fights in order to gain fame and a high-paying client (a lot of bragging rights in hiring a Champion martial artist). Cocky, snide and prone to humiliating male opponents (shut up). Moves: Chokeslam, Face Grab & Slam, Suplexes, High Kick, Frankensteiner.

* A Tiger-Style Kung Fu fighter, who wields Pyrokinetic Chi. A symbol of how overuse of Chi can damage a person, as he's losing himself to a dark side that threatens to consume his life. Moves: Tiger Claws (flaming Claws from his fingers), Fireball ("Claw Strike" that goes across the screen).

* A gigantic, 7'6"+ fighter from India, using their traditional wrestling style. Part of the "Untouchable" caste, living in abject poverty, fighting his way out of it for his family. Moves: Grab & Toss, "Iron Skin" (temporary Toughness boost), Suplexes, A Variable Move (throws opponent into the air, then "catches" him for a variety of possible endings).

* A Mongolian Sumo Wrestler, and younger brother of the current World Champion- he hasn't seen his brother in years (the man lives in solitude and only comes out to fight), so he walks away from his Sumo Stable and goes on to find him. I don't have much for him yet.

* A female Muay Thai fighter who gets back into the game after raising a couple of children, needing money for her family (yes, a Combat MILF). Differs from other Muay Thai fighters by virtue of being a female in the same general outfit (adding a sports bra to the generic ensemble), in addition to actually looking about 35-45. I don't have much for moves- just a "Ring"-style Blast.

* A big, muscular female (OK when someone joked about me having a ton of them, I got another idea. Shut up) Pro Wrestler. I really have nothing, as this is my most-recent idea. I was gonna make her a blue-haired girl in a pink singlet for contrast, but then I remembered, as I often do, that the world contains brown people, and so I made her black with some white tattoos. Moves: Some Pro Wrestling Stuff- Leaping Lariat, Spinning Powerbomb, Ocean Cyclone Suplex (look it up).

The World Champion: Based on my old character for the Street Fighter RPG- a big, muscular Mongolian guy with crazy tattoos (our GM liked him, as unlike the others, he actually LOOKED like a guy from a Capcom video game- most of the others just looked like normal dudes). Fights using the ancient, brutal Pankration fighting style.

Another World Champion: I'm thinking of an ex-Champ who lost and went into constant training for a comeback. Unlike most Fighting Game Bosses, this one is a WOMAN- a black woman who uses Chi more like an Avatar character than a Fighting Game one- Area Effects from spinning, upside-down kicks and insane, esoteric stuff. Moves: Spinning Bird Kick w/ Chi Waves, SNK-Style Sliding Fireball.

... huh, there's more guys here than I thought. I guess that'll happen when you think off-and-on about a setting for years :). Part of my Superhero-Verse actually includes a Flying Hero named Osprey who I later merged with the Fighting-Verse as an up & coming brawler who started the superhero life more for "training" for her martial arts one, and came to realize, Spidey-style, that she was being irresponsible about it and started taking heroics more seriously. She fights like a Muay Thai fighter normally, but uses a Flight-assisted fighting style as a hero, so that people won't get wise.

PS that Catgirl absolutely needs to be your thread's next build. That sounds like an interesting story- was it an "I don't understand why my OBVIOUSLY ENTERTAINING character does not draw the attention of the entire gaming table?" situation?
