He may be one ninja too many, but purple is still a proper bitching color.

Motivation (Power)- Rain betrayed his own race to Outworld because they refused him command of his own army. His arrogance and thirst for power know no bounds.
Responsibility (Son of Argus)- Argus is the chief God of Edenia, and is Rain's birth father. This means he has familial connections to Taven, Daegon and others.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 20 / Defenses: 12 (137)

Jesus, What a Waste:
-Rain sucks even more than Ermac in terms of appearance and name (an elaborate pun on a famous singer... he's Purple, his name is Rain, and he's a Prince of Edenia. Though what a wasted opportunity for a good Peter Gabriel joke by not making him the red guy), but has much more backstory, though he initially appeared only as a red herring- an implied "Secret Kharacter" who was actually not in the game at all. It turned out in subsequent games that Rain is another Edenian, much like Kitana & Sindel, but he's the abandoned son of a God-King and some mistress who willingly allied with Shao Kahn in order to spare his own life. He turns on the Emperor eventually after discovering that Kahn murdered his adoptive father, but he's a bad guy in Armageddon, after he skipped three games. Didn't stop him from being a disposable henchman in MK: Annihilation, however (Kahn even pulled the "You Have Failed Me" thing and offed his own henchman!).

-Rain is kind of inexplicably a Lin Kuei design in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, his debut game- this is when they were basically just filling in new slots for the games, and re-introducing the ninja design after fan backlash against MK 3 scrapping them entirely and making Cyber-Ninjas instead. So in the additional versions of the game (the Arcades got a handful of updates, while the SNES, Genesis and other systems each got a final version, too), we suddenly saw Scorpion and Reptile make comebacks in ninja form, plus a few other new guys.

New Kontinuity:
-The updated 2011 series retains his "Lost Prince of Edenia" origin story, but drops the Lin Kuei design entirely (as it never made sense in the first place). He's an Edenian whose father was a general slaughtered by Shao Kahn's invasion, and is then raised by the Edenian Resistance. He is an elite, but arrogant, fighter, and betrayed his people when denied a command of his own, joining Shao Kahn's army! He only turns on Kahn when it's revealed that the Emperor had killed his adoptive father- he plots a suicide attack, but it never comes to pass. He doesn't appear in Mortal Kombat X except as an NPC. He discovers that he's the son of the mythical Argus, and declares himself a God, allying with Empress Mileena, but revealing that he's deceptive and wants the throne himself, before a side-character beats him up and he disappears from the narrative, never having mattered to it. It's a bit odd, as most of the useless side-characters are playable in this version, with only unpopular Rain being stuck doing nothing. Rain is a late DLC entrant into MK 11.

Rain's Stats:
-Rain's whole thing is controlling water and electricity, though his attacks had some unique aspects to them ("Mind Control Orb" being the only thing like it in Mortal Kombat). Not sure how he could ALSO control lightning, but they were obviously scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas once the SIXTH Lin Kuei ninja's time was there. Rain can use Juggle Kombos like nuts in the later MK 3 games too, since his Roundhouse can knock a guy across the screen and back through the other side.

-I was given some negative feedback for making Rain a mere PL 8 (compared to the teens Yun & Yang from Street Fighter III, who are PL 9s), because he's unpopular, because the 2011 reboot gave him this big Power-Geek opening by beating up all the characters, but f*ck that noise- that's pure New Villain Stink in a character so useless that he couldn't even make the subsequent games in EITHER generation of Mortal Kombat. As always, you get more credit the more games in which you appear, and Rain only exists in his debut game (a late version of MK 3, Armageddon (a game that deliberately included EVERYONE), and the 2011 reboot, which again used everyone from the first three games, regardless of importance. Seriously- f*ck Rain.

Something like that. It was kind of neat, actually. All of the other spirits in him don't give him an advantage against a single person, but they deny groups of people any advantage against him. Maybe Uncanny Dodge and an Immunity to Aid/Team Attack options so that people can't really get any benefits for attacking him together.
Hm, not bad. Here's what I went with:

"Made Up Of Lots of Lost Souls"
Quickness 4 (Flaws: Limited to Mental Tasks) [2]
Immunity 5 (Teamwork/Aid Another Actions) [5]
Enhanced Advantages 1: Uncanny Dodge [1]
I like it.

I have to admit, I kind of liked Ermac and that aspect seemed pretty unique. Like, in my head I had this image of him stalemating a mind controlled Johnny Cage, just parrying and kicking back and forth as normal, but then Sonya comes up behind him and starts punching/kicking him. Only for one of Ermac's arms to come around and start parrying her attacks while he keeps looking at Cage, even sidestepping and ducking kicks from Sonya without breaking stride in fighting Johnny. Then Kung Lao does this flying kick at him out of nowhere and Ermac ducks it without a problem, while still continuing to fight Sonya and Johnny.

It would look like, on the surface, that Ermac is a much better fighter than the three of them, but he's only about as skilled as any one of them. It's just that his unique ability basically allows him to fight them "one-on-one" in his brain at the same time, if that makes sense.

Yeah, of all of the ninja characters, Rain having a Lin Kuei outfit just made no sense.

Sub-Zero's 1 & 2 and Smoke made sense. They were Lin Kuei.

Scorpion made sense because his ninja clan had a rivalry with the Lin Kuei and wore yellow to mock them.

Ermac might have made some sense if some of the souls that made up his being were of Lin Kuei and they influenced his design, but the "crimson mummy" look works better for him.

Reptile might have made some sense at a stretch if his goal was to act as spy and pretend to be Lin Kuei.

But Rain? Guy isn't a ninja, guy has no connection to Earth, he isn't pretending to be Lin Kuei or mock them, he just showed up out of nowhere with a purple ninja outfit.

You know what's funny?

Real ninja's wouldn't wear those silly pajamas. They'd look like normal people. Usually the one that people don't pay attention to. Gardeners, farmers, servants that sort of thing.

Yeah. I dunno if it's been brought up yet, but the traditional "ninja" look that people associate with ninjas in fiction generally comes from the black outfits the stagehands in traditional Japanese plays wore (and those guys are called Kuroko, so the guy in Samurai Shodown is supposed to be one of those, too.), since they were supposed to be "invisible" and not part of the play itself.

Mostly unrelated to the topic at-hand, but Super Bunnyhop recently did a video on the "historical" setting of the Soul Calibur games and one of the things they covered was the mapping of ninja to specialized outfits, specifically regarding Taki and the historicality of "kunoichi", or sexy female ninja. They're documented, but it's more speculative (and hopeful) than anything else. The really weird thing? Yoshimitsu is one of the most accurately dressed characters...

-Chameleon is the final (thank the heavens) Lin Kuei outfitted guy in the Mortal Kombat series, appearing in the Game Genie-assisted Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat 3 (but without Special Moves or Fatalities), then the Mortal Kombat Trilogy versions of the game for the Next-Gen Systems (PlayStation, PC & Sega Saturn). He was given no real backstory, and appears to be part of Reptile's people (green blood; reptilian name). His schtick was that his colour scheme constantly changed, allowing him to mimic the moves of Scorpion, Ermac, Reptile, Sub-Zero (Klassic Version only), Rain, Noob Saibot & Smoke (again, Klassic version only). He was pretty much entirely hated (even Ed Boon stated he was deliberately left out of MK's 2011 return), but got thrown into the MK: Armageddon end-game thanks to fan demand for completing the entire roster. Unlike most Secret Kharacters, he was crappy and moved at the same speed as everyone else. Of course, he could be unpredictable thanks to being able to switch attacks, making you switch gears repeatedly.

In MK: Armageddon, Chameleon instead uses a baseline set of moves, taken from each Lin Kuei guy (save Noob & Smoke), but with his own name attached.

-Triborg is a Downloadable Character from Mortal Kombat X, and is Yet Another Cyborg. He's born from the downloaded consciousnesses of Sektor, Cyrax and Smoke all merged together. His schtick combines the powers of Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke & Sub-Zero- his armor changes color depending on whose powers he's using. His power is basically a Morph, so I used the 18-point power-set as a baseline, then made Metamorphs off of that.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 11 (125)

-Frost looks like someone who could have been a Mary Sue- a cute girl version of a popular character, who therefore had tons of potential. But instead, they went the route of making her a horrible villain who only joined the Lin Kuei to rule them, and grabbed for power in multiple games, failing easily each time. She was never really a match for Sub-Zero (and also lost to Taven in a later game), but she's got an interesting look and some variations of the Sub-Zero theme (using more Area Attacks than most MK fighters). Of course, she's probably more famous for that Cosplay picture Marie-Claude Bourbonnaise, a Boobie/Cosplay model (the one I saw dressed as a hornet-chick at the Calgary Comic Con) did of her. Apparently the image of her in that outfit "aided" the art team for MK 2011 in figuring out the proportions of the female cast for the game, too.

-And I swear I only knew who she was because Kreuzritter told me over MSN :). In fact, so clueless was I, that I had to check pic after pic after pic, JUST to make sure I got her name right! Now who else do you know who cares that much about accuracy?

-Frost is a surprise entrant in MK 11, being encountered by Kronika, who instructs her to lead the Cyber Lin Kuei. She is there for the "Lin Kuei" subplot, losing to Scorpion & Sub-Zero, then Raiden.

-In the Kurrent Timeline, Frost debuts fighting Cassie Cage, but barely loses at the last moment. She later observes Sub-Zero's attempts to make peace with Scorpion and, like a dumbass, flies in on the attack. Scorpion easily defeats her, but this causes a fight between the two ninjas, and she then tries to interfere and kill him- Sub-Zero stops her, proving his sincerity to his old enemy. She is embarrassingly left frozen while the two men finish their conversation.

Fun fact... that last image of Frost is Marie Claude Bourbonnais. A French Canadian cosplayer.
Met her at comic-con a few times. Super nice person and, and had some interesting takes on cosplaying and the various shows that have aired.

She does a pretty good Power Girl too.

Careful if you Google her at work though.

Yup, as I mentioned, I checked and checked and checked again to make sure I got her name right :).

Though honestly, she's a BIT, um, plastic, for my tastes. Like, the GIANT spherical boobs are more something I was into in my teens, I think. All those MuscleMag bikini issues and such :).

It reminds me, though, of how the bodies in Mortal Kombat have shifted. The first three games had pretty natural bodies since... well, they used actual people. The average MK actor seemed to get more and more fit as the games moved on. MK 4, the first polygon-graphics game, seemed to keep the same "realistic" body style, despite the shift in graphics. The later games seemed to exaggerate things far more, using blockier physiques. The 2011 remake eschews realism entirely, going for Comic Book People, what with every guy being massively ripped with bulging, balloon-like muscles, and every woman looking... like Marie Claude Bourbonnais- toned tummy, wide hips and enormous, spherical breasts.

And then all of a suddenly Mortal Kombat X comes out and it actually looks screwy to see realistic-looking people in a video game again :). Like, it totally throws me off to suddenly see Sonya & Scorpion look like they could be actual people.

-Huh, well I'll be dipped- Tremor is a BRONZE ninja, but hails from one of the spin-off games- his real debut as a playable fighter is as Downloadable Content for Mortal Kombat X, where he is a giant, geokinetic ninja. He fights by joining the Black Dragons against the Shokan/Oni horde- a tremor incapacitates Kintaro's army, allowing Kano to wipe out most of them with a handheld nuclear weapon. Kotal Kahn later allies with the Shokan and tries to ransom Kano, but Tremor gets involved- ultimately, he is shot by Sonya Blade and captured- never really being anything but a minor character. And no, he's not a Lin Kuei guy.

See. Adrien knew what he was talking about. ;)

 I got distracted by the machine gun jubblies and actually missed that you freaking named her in your post.

And yeah. I kinda agree with the second part. But... It's quite the interesting aspect of her Heroes of The North Villain, Hornet. Not the original version - that was just a pair of giant mixing bowls covering her.

One interesting note is that Rain's bio in the Mortal Kombat Trilogy manual is actually Tremor's, suggesting he was originally meant to be in that game.
