-Sareena is from the Sub-Zero game, but was meant to show up in many others- plans were often changed (she was going to be in MK 4, then Deadly Alliance). She's a demon who turned good after losing to Subby- she was impressed by him sparing her life, and saved him against Shinnok, at the cost of her own life. She was then included in a later MK game for the Game Boy Advance (saying that only her HUMAN form had died), and got into MK: Armageddon as a result, again rejecting her master Quan-Chi. There's a bit of a romance angle with both Sub-Zeros, but she's such a minor character that it never really turned into anything.

-Sareena reappears in Mortal Kombat X as an unplayable assist character, joining the Special Forces guys against Quan Chi and helping them with her magic.

Komplications:
Reputation (Actor/Fraud)- A lot of people disrespect Cage because of his history as an actor- in the movies, he's convinced by a Shapeshifted Shang Tsung (who wants to gather more souls) that people consider him a fraud, and so he's out to kick some ass to prove his worth.
Relationship (Sonya Blade)- He's got the hots for the blonde ass-kicker. Eventually, they get married, but divorce because of her focus on her job.
Relationship (Cassie Cage)- Johnny is actually a responsible father, ensuring the safety of his daughter.
Responsibility (Ego)- He signs everything "To My Biggest Fan!"

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 16 (115)

Cage- The Unpopular Character:
-Johnny Cage was the least-popular of all the Mortal Kombat characters to my group, and I think many others as well- his design was a bit plain, and his arrogance didn't play off well, despite him being based off of Jean-Claude Van Damme (the initial MK game initially WAS gonna be a Van Damme-based game, too- Cage was actually the first guy created for the games). But the movie made him awesome, giving him almost all of the best lines ("I'm in a place where every single person probably wants to kick my ass- it's like being back in high school!" and "Those were $500 sunglasses, asshole" are the best), several funny scenes, made him a butt-monkey, but THEN had him punch Goro square in the balls, eventuall knocking him to his death- JOHNNY CAGE TOOK OUT THE MOST BAD-ASS CHARACTER. And who knows how big he would've been if the original choice to play him, Brandon Lee, hadn't died.
-However, the character wouldn't be able to capitalize off this success- he made the first two games, but vanished from Mortal Kombat 3 after his actor, Daniel Pesina, was fired for advertising for a rival Fighting Game, BloodStorm, AS THE GUY WHO PLAYED JOHNNY CAGE, deriding MK in favor of this new game.

Original Kontinuity:
-Johnny had a pretty good concept in the first game- an actor in martial arts films, he fought in the tournament to prove he wasn't a fraud. This made him the only fighter not there for revenge or some grand purpose, as he wasn't paired off with any other fighters. However, this made him a central "Earthrealm Defender" alongside Liu Kang & Sonya Blade. However, he was declared to be dead in MK 3, having been killed by Motaro during the Outworld invasion of Earth. However, his soul was unable to ascend to a higher plane, and returned (only for MK Trilogy, the last version of the game)- he came back to life in MK 4 after pleading with Raiden to let him help save Earth. He faced the Deadly Alliance, but was killed during MK: Deception, being turned into one of Onaga's undead slaves before Ermac saved his life. In Annihilation, he acts as a solo hero, frustrated with the failing efforts of his former allies.

New Kontinuity:
-Johnny in the newer games is MUCH more of an Entertaining Douchebag, much like his movie characterization- he spends his time disbelieving all the magic stuff and hitting on Sonya Blade, being a source of laughs. He loses to Cyrax, but is spared, and is generally treated as a stalward Earthrealm defender from this point on. He loses in the second tournament to Ermac, but is saved (by Raiden) from Motaro following the invasion of Earth, changing history. He manages to survive the attack by Sindel, unlike most of the other Earth fighters, and he & Sonya are among the shocked survivors in the very end of the game, mourning Liu Kang.

-The stories between reboot games explain that the remaining Earthrealm fighters manage to fight off the new baddie Shinnok, with Johnny nearly sacrificing himself and revealing some kind of ancestral hidden power while saving Sonya's life. Raiden is thus able to capture Shinnok inside an amulet. Sonya, impressed, gives Johnny a chance, and the two end up having a child and marrying- however, they later divorce when she focuses too much on work. Twenty years later, he creates a new Earthrealm team consisting of their daughter Cassie and some other second-generation fighters. This gives us the hilarious sight of JOHNNY CAGE with greying hair and actual responsibility and common sense for once, as he's now the voice of reason with intense Sonya, the immature kids, and the possibly evil Raiden. He is badly scarred by D'Vorah, an agent of Shinnok, but Cassie reveals that she now has the ancestral power Johnny showed, defeating the villain. Johnny is just happy that Sonya "called me 'Johnny' again".

-Johnny & Sonya reconcile between MK X & MK 11, but Sonya tragically dies on a mission. A younger Johnny arrives thanks to Kronika's time-quake, along with a younger Sonya, who is digusted that the two had hooked up. Humorously, Johnny becomes greatly annoyed by his younger self, who takes nothing seriously (he arrives before Outworld invaded Earth- which had a sobering effect on him). Elder Johnny defeats both Erron Black and Sektor, and he later becomes injured, missing the rest of the story, while Young Johnny is forced to fight Sonya, smartening up a bit when they're forced to fight each other (Sonya tries not to, but Johnny ensures her they can't fake it).

Johnny's Stats:
-Johnny is a good example of a slightly lower-end fighter, making up one full PL lower than Liu Kang does, while still being an elite fighter. Even in the remakes, he nearly constantly loses out in the early stages of the tournaments.

-An older Johnny has similar stats, but seems to have way higher Mental Abilities- likely INT 1, AWA 3, PRE 4.

I always liked Johnny Cage for some reason. Even more than Lui Kang. The movie made him especially fun and I hated that he was left out of so many games. He's a very Hal Jordan/Ken Masters kind of guy, and the movie star angle was actually pretty unique.

Cops & Robbers

Post by Jabroniville »

COPS & ROBBERS:
-This group of characters are a bit of a "side story" in Mortal Kombat- the first game was very good about giving every member of their short roster an origin story and a reason for being there- Scorpion & Sub-Zero were enemies, as were Sonya and Kano. MK II dropped both of them, but added Sonya's partner, Jax, giving the roster a major powerhouse. Afterwards, however, things built up- Sonya & Kano returned for the third game, and later games tied everyone in further together. Kano would get an attempted replacement character, his Black Dragons would add numerous other members, and there'd even be a RIVAL group, in the Red Dragons. Kano would join up with Outworld's forces as well, so he'd be more a part of the game's overall story. This continues, even into the remake and its sequel- in fact, the Special Forces squad is now the MAIN GROUP of the game! Liu Kang and his monks are basically dropped, and we see Sonya & Johnny's daughter as the new main character.

Responsibility (Hawtness)- Though Sonya doesn't use her looks to her advantage, she is hot enough that she often draws undue attention from supervillainous types. Her arch-nemesis flirts with her, and Shang Tsung will put her into a Sexy Slave-Girl Dress the second he gets the chance.

Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 11 (154)

Sonya- The O.G. Female Kombatant:
-What is it with Fighting Games and making The Token Chick a Special Agent? Seriously, there's Chun-Li starting the whole thing, then you have Sonya Blade, Nina Williams (Tekken), Sarah Bryant (Virtua Fighter)... they're even mostly blonde! I suppose it's their way to make every possible female character a "Strong Female Role Model" (tm), because after all, you know that girls REQUIRE Strong Female Role Models to look up to, and it's the job of all media to provide them. Though it's probably just them all ripping off Chun-Li & Sonya, who hereself was inspired by real-life martial artist/actress Cynthia Rothrock. Sonya was the original sex appeal in the first game, and got the same job in MK 3 as well (she took a backseat in MK II for the new chicks, so they could become bigger characters out of her shadow). Her job as a government agent usually leads to her being a major good guy in every game, usually hunting down Kano, or whoever they got to replace Kano by the later games.

-Sonya debuted in Mortal Kombat hunting down Kano, as the two were paired off as enemies (similar to Scorpion & Sub-Zero). Both of them were the only absentee cast members for MK II, appearing in Shao Kahn's stage, chained beside his throne. Her big return in MK 3 came along with being played by Playboy Playmate Kerri Hoskins (which video game magazines of the time LOVED to hype up), and by this point was more or less in the "Special Forces" stable of characters, which had since added Jax, Kenshi and others. In MK 4, she was chasing Jarek, the replacement for Kano, but her role as a major character was basically done- she was just the Special Forces Chick who got involved in a lot of Outworld-related stuff.

-In the movie, Sonya was pretty entertaining as the grouchy chick, and it was hilarious how despite her martial arts prowess, she was effortlessly kidnapped by Shang Tsung utilizing the "Standard Female Grab Area" on her arm and just dragging her away to be rescued by the heroes. At least she got to kill Kano halfway through, and even though MK: Annihilation was a piece of garbage, she got to kill THREE people, dispatching Cyrax, Mileena and Ermac (seriously, everyone else got big wins in that movie's climax, and she finished off ERMAC?). She was played by a different actress in each movie, a sure sign of crappy budgeting/directing/producing.

New Kontinuity:
-In the remakes, she mostly acts like her movie version, having the same relationship with Johnny (they had no such interact in the original series, near as I can tell)- he flirts with her, and she gets pissed off at him. She still doesn't play much overall role in the story, but she & Johnny are Liu Kang's closest allies in the fight, and survive at the end of the story mode. Mortal Kombat X shoots ahead several years, with Sonya & Johnny having MARRIED, producing Cassie Cage before divorcing. It turns out that Johnny's selflessness during the attack by Shinnok impressed her. The kidnapping of Cassie by Outworld forces sets off a lot of the plot of the game, as Sonya (who's missed a lot of Cassie's life due to her job) has to lead the rescue mission, and interact with her ex. Though she suggests they "were wrong from the start", she manages to call him "Johnny" several times, much to his relief, and it's implied they might be patching things up.

-Sonya tragically dies in the opening moments of MK 11, sacrificing herself so that the team's mission can succeed- devastasting Johnny & Cassie Cage. However, Kronika's temporal anomalies result in the YOUNGER Sonya being sent to this timeline, meaning that like Tekken, they now have an excuse for the young & hot version to be around again, lol. Young Sonya is naturally disgusted to find out that she & JOHNNY CAGE have a child together, but she appreciates the elder Johnny's matured attitude and how Cassie is. She uses her head in a clever way- when Kano suggests he'll kill the younger Johnny so the elder dies to, she simply shoots Young Kano in the face, killing both Kanos at once.

Sonya's Stats:
-Sonya barely makes PL 8.5 like a lot of the cast, but makes up for it by spending alot more points on Skills & Advantages, making her a more well-rounded kombatant in a lot of ways. And lest anyone judge me for not giving such a blatantly-hot woman the Attractive Advantage, keep in mind that Sonya is in no way the type of woman who would flirt her way to anything, or even bluff her way through things all that often. Hell, for Sonya, her idea of hitting on someone is go punch them in the face (if you find that hot, you are a sick and disturbed human being... just like me :)). She literally never once uses an approximation of it- if anything, she's actually pretty bad with people for someone whose job is based around investigation- she's aggressive and pushy with EVERYONE.

Of all of her looks, oddly enough I think the one that worked best for Sonya was her Shaolin Monks outfit:

Image

It's a bit plain compared to her other allies outfits, but it's a decent military look that still shows off some curves, and doesn't look as ridiculous for a special forces person to be going around either in spandex or just a military vest.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 13 / Defenses: 13 (144)

Kano- Iconic Kombatant, Despite Missing Every Other Game:
-Kano is a generic thug with a red eye in the first Mortal Kombat game (early designs were of an eyepatched twin-katana wielder, then later with a large helmet), given to create some minor-character subplot with The Chick, Sonya Blade. There, he looked like he was in the cheapest gear by far- a white gi/military thing that could have come from the Salvation Army. Both he & Sonya were gone from the famous MK II owing to memory constraints and general disinterest, appearing in Shao Kahn's stage as chained prisoners. By the time the movie rolled around, they needed a thug to get killed, so they made this hilariously entertaining, douchebaggy Kano from the original, crazy/super-serious guy, and made a much better character out of him, as none of the MK crowd seemed to have a sense of humor (besides Johnny Cage). It led to a pretty decent fight where he kicked around Sonya, until she snapped his neck between her ankles (not possible in real life, by the way- because you know this game is a stickler for realistic depictions of violence).

-The Australian version in the movie led to him being a much better-recieved character (sadly, his actor Trevor Goddard died of a drug overdose years ago, but not before making Kano's Aussie accent iconic), so Kano wasn't missing from the series for long- he reappers in Mortal Kombat 3 as a much more sinister-looking, bald-headed guy, now using his iconic red eyepatch as a laser weapon (as fans had been assuming for years).

Original Kontinuity:
-Kano is a vicious criminal who killed Sonya Blade's old partner, and now hunts her in the first tournament. However, he aids Earth's heroes in the end, but ends up in Outworld along with Sonya- both are captured by Shao Kahn. Jax later frees both, and Kano escapes back to Outworld. There, he begs for his life, and is rewarded with a position teaching Shao Kahn's armies how to use Earth's weapons- this becomes part of the invasion of Earth in MK 3. He was thought-dead, thrown from a tall building by Sonya (he was absent from MK 4), but reappears one game later- it turned out that he'd been healed and imprisoned by Motaro, who was slain by Sheeva- he and Sheeva then plotted against Shao Kahn, but Kano betrayed her at the last moment, and was thus promoted to General. When Kahn was killed by the Deadly Alliance of Shang Tsung & Quan Chi, he promptly swears allegiance to the two of them, because Kano is hilariously rotten. However, he was undone by a rival- Mavado, who was offered Kano as a prize if he fought Kenshi for the Alliance. Kano is later seen as a prisoner of the Red Dragon clan, and only reappears in the final game as a minor character.

New Kontinuity:
-Kano is in a pretty similar role in the 2011 series, nearly killing a weakened Sonya, but being stopped by Johnny Cage. Now fully Australian owing to Trevor Goddard's portrayal in the movie, he keeps teaming up with the bad guys, but is just used as a "Jobber To The Stars", subsequently losing to Sonya & Smoke, then Kabal (who blames Kano for turning him into a freak- saving his burned body but changing him in the process). Kano is instrumental in Mortal Kombat X, having stolen the amulet containing Shinnok and then SELLING IT to Mileena, setting the game in motion. He fails to assassinate Kotal Kahn, but is rescued at the last minute. He then taunts Sonya, but is strangled and nearly killed- he begs for his life, and is only spared when Cage speaks on his behalf (if only to gather information). He is not seen again after this.

-A young Kano is brought to the modern timeline by Kronika's time-quake, and quickly joins forces with her, then the elder Kano. Elder Kano betrays Sektor by causing him to detonate, destroying the Cyber Lin Kuei hideout, and both Kanos set up Sonya Blade against a number of opponents. However, elder Kano makes a fatal mistake when he holds a young Johnny Cage hostage, telling Sonya that his death would kill his elder self, as well as remove Cassie Cage from existence. Sonya simply pulls out a pistol and shoots the young Kano in the face. This act causes the elder Kano to fade from existence as his younger self dies.

Kano's Stats:
-Kano's one of the most expensive guys thanks to having a more well-rounded Skillset thanks to his criminal background, and he's a little more lethal than Johnny Cage. He can fire lasers from his eyes, see in the dark, and throw his blade at the same time (which is redundant with his laser, but whatever). He gets Blast for the Knife Throw instead of Thrown Strike, because he can just keep whipping 'em out.

To me, Kano (especially the movie version) is a klassic example of "guy you love to hate". He's a kraven koward, but is entertaining, and seeing him get beaten down is extra satisfying.

Komplications:
Enemy (Kano)- Jax & Sonya have hunted Kano for years.
Responsibility (Earthrealm)- Jax is one of Raiden's chosen defenders of Earthrealm against Shao Kahn's forces.
Relationship (Sonya)- Purely professional, Jax & Sonya are close confidants.

Total: Abilities: 80 / Skills: 62--31 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 19 / Defenses: 14 (160)

-Jax effectively replaces Sonya in Mortal Kombat II, and adds a black dude to the franchise at the same time. And of course he is COMPLETELY bad-ass, looking like a ripped bodybuilder in a cast full of standard athletic builds, hammering the ground, and squashing fools' heads between his hands. Fun fact: He was originally going to be called Kurtis Stryker, a name which later went to an MK 3 character, and was going to be in the first game until they needed a chick and put Sonya in his place. AND he was going to be a standard black kickboxer, but similarities to numerous Capcom characters (Balrog, Dee Jay, Sagat), led them down another path- he was gonna have metal hands, too, but they dropped that, until...

-MK 3 gives him a permanent upgrade with rad '90s CYBERNETIC ARMS complete with bad-ass weapons inside them (just in case you didn't think the game could get any more '90s), too. What I remember most about Jax was his semi-legendary status in MK II- along with Mileena, he was one of the best overall characters in the game. GamePro in fact rated them #1 and 2, with Jax only falling behind because while he was stronger against more foes, Mileena had a big advantage over HIM. The game was quite brutally unbalanced, and both characters could run roughshod over others with abusable tactics.

-He makes a short cameo in the first movie, setting up the second (a different actor, of course), where he builds the cyber-arms, and gets dressed down by Raiden for it. He of course realizes he doesn't need them at movie's end, and beats the crap out of Motaro bare-handed, LIKE A BOSS. Just because that wasn't awesome enough, he also killed Noob Saibot earlier.

Original Kontinuity:
-Jax is primarily "Sonya's Friend", and searches for her in MK II. In the next game, he sports bionic implants on his arms, and becomes the commanding officer of the Outworld Investigation Agency. He remains in these roles for quite some time, popping up in pretty much every game as a background good guy. He kills the criminal Hsu Hao, but is killed in the end of Deadly Alliance along with numerous others, turned into a zombie by Onaga. He is resurrected by the end of the story.

New Kontinuity:
-Jax is pretty much in an identical role here- he's Sonya's partner, but takes a smaller role in the story, aiding the Earthrealm fighters in finding a captured Sonya (after he himself was captured and hurt for the first tournament, explaining his absense). It even explained how he got the cybernetic arms (which here are not simple bionics)- because Ermac had telekinetically-shredded his limbs in a surprise attack. He disappears from the narrative, however, being killed by a debuting Sindel. Quan Chi turns him into a revenant, but he's beaten, and only later resurrected for real. He ends up a father by the events of Mortal Kombat X, his daughter Jacqui being best friends with Sonya's daughter Cassie. He actually proves to be a more effective fighter in the sequels, defeating Kitana, Sindel & Kung Lao as revenants, before wiping the floor with Quan Chi as well.

-Jax plays a double-role in MK 11, where his past self returns thanks to a time-quake, while his elder self still exists. It's stated that his wife Vera has died, leaving Jax broken- the older one ultimately sides with Kronika to prevent his daughter Jacqui from ever becoming a soldier! So the younger Jax allies with the heroes, and even fights and defeats the elder! When Old!Jax discovers that Kronika intends to resurrect Shinnok, who is her SON, he is digusted, since Shinnok is the reason he had turned into a Revenant! This puts both Jaxes on the same side, as he rejoins the heroes.

Jax's Stats:
-Jax ends up being very expensive and well-rounded thanks to the fact that he's a Scientific Genius (he helped make an Outworld-Bound Teleporter and rebuilt Cyrax), has an expensive Damaging/Afflikting Burst attack, and he can attack in multiple ways. Jax is a full-on PL 9, and would beat the hell out of most of the cast by virtue of his enhanced Strength.

-Jarek was introduced as a trainee of Kano's for Mortal Kombat 4, leading to a backlash against him similar to all the rip-off characters in Street Fighter III, mainly because Jarek had ONLY Kano's moves except for a couple or original ones (he even uses the LASER EYE for some reason)- essentially a Xeroxed Replacement Kharacter. He's a boss in MK: Special Forces, but otherwise is tied for the fewest appearances of any MK character at two- he's mentioned in cameo for MK X and that's it.

-Mavado is the leader of the Red Dragons, a group designed to wipe out the Black Dragons. He teams with The Deadly Alliance (Shang Tsung & Quan Chi) as a "new Kano" of sorts, but he obviously never really "took" with the Kreators or fans (I mean, they made him the big rival of KABAL), and so he vanished except for the "Everyone Gets In" game. He's a higher PL than most generic losers by virtue of his rank, but he's unique in that his "Special Moves" are just him being good at avoiding things or using his Advantages.

It's kind of funny how, in some ways, the Mortal Kombat series is very representative of 90s comics. The initial creations of the first and second games are generally immensely popular, but after a while the newer creations just can't seem to find traction, with many of them being poorly thought out replacement characters. And eventually the franchise reaches a point where it requires the equivalent of a company-wide reboot. Though oddly enough, the reboot has proven very successful and popular.

I'll also always be grateful to Netherrealm Studios for giving me the only really playable version of Captain Marvel in a video game. Say what you will about Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, it let me play as a Captain Marvel who was powerful and in-character, and who actually mattered to the plot. Outside of that game two others (LEGO Batman 2, Scribblenauts DCU), every video game appearance of Cap has had him as an NPC or assist character, or he's been replaced with the Nu-52 version of Shazam.

-Hsu Hao is a Red Dragon minion of Mavado's, and he's teaming with Special Forces as a mole to eliminate the Black Dragons first, then the Forces. Ed Boon considers him (along with Drahmin) his least-favourite Mortal Kombat character, and thus we're unlikely to ever see his return (and it's why he was offed by Jax in his debut game). Apparently the entire Kreative Team hated him... which begs the question of WHY they created him in the first place.

The MK reboot is odd in that it basically capitalizes on nostalgia in the best way, using all the old characters but carefully placing them about the story instead of just dumping them out there. A distillation of what peopled LIKED about the franchise, while ignoring the excessively-detailed story and a lot of the nonsense. In essence, the Reboots are more or less the DC Animated Universe compared to the comics.

Some guys are still unnecessary in the grand scheme of things, but you're not left with completely poorly-thought-out characters. Pretty much the entirety of the guys I used to use for Templates (Hsu Hao, Mavado, etc.) are complete junk, and really didn't need to exist. They seem like somebody just hashing out one of their "Pet Characters" or just trying to go "well we need SOME new characters" thing, and not caring what they produced.
