-Alien was a VERY huge hit back in the day, brilliantly directed and acted by everyone involved. Since it's a horror movie, I found it very dull and "nothing's happening", but seriously- it's well-shot as hell. I've SEEN the suit they used for the movie- it's cheap plastic nothing. That it looked THAT GOOD in the movie is why James Cameron is among the best. It of course spawned a HUGE franchise, with the sequel changing gears completely to be an Action Movie, and one of the best ever made. It gave us several great characters, especially Vasquez, and features the great "Get away from her, you BITCH!" moment, and subsequent Alien Queen (vs) Ripley In Mecha-Suit battle.

-There were numerous sequels, all of which were pretty bad. Joss Whedon wrote one, and apparently the crew there are incredibly-similar to the crew in Firefly- it even has Whedon's personal favorite thing- Wispy Tiny Girls With Mental Issues. The franchise has endured, even though most of the films have been completely awful since the second one.

-Their are three variants on the design, which work rather differently. The Exo Sting & Xeno Strike are only available to the Acidic Variation, while the Tarkatan Variation has Arm Blades- since Aliens are infamously able to take on some traits of those who get facehugged. There's also a Konjurer Variation that deals with the side creatures of the series:

"Konjurer Variation"
"Drone Drop/Facehugger" Blast 5 (Feats: Indirect- From Above) [11]

"Tarkatan Variation"
"Tarkatan Blades" Strength-Damage +2 (Extras: Multiattack 8) (Feats: Split) (Inaccurate -1) [9]

The odd thing about the DLC of MKX is that all the new characters were guests, except for one, and that was friggin BO RAI CHO.

I kinda wanna see what Netherrealm would do with a fully-fledged horror-themed fighting game, since those are pretty rare and they handled the horror guys well.

Meanwhile, Injustice 2 had the TMNT and HELLBOY as guest characters!

It is definitely weird, since it's the only time Irem (more well known for R-Type) delved into the fighting game genre. The boss (whlie having the edgy name "Skull Reaper" in the US version) is one huge R-Type reference, as his projectile is the famous R-Type ring laser that has priority over all other projectiles in the game, and on defeat it is revealed that he is actually one of the Bydo, the antagonists of the R-Type series. So that's neat at least.
There's not really anything mind-blowing in the game, though, since there's only 7 playable characters and 1 boss at a time where SF2 was out.

It was originally arcade-exclusive, but it apparently is availble in DotEmu's "Irem Arcade Hits" collection for PC.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 17 (146)

-The original Predator is a very fun, iconic action movie with doses of horror. It's also one of the best unintentionally gay movies of all time, bordering on Top Gun- in the opening bit, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers share the most ROMANTIC LOOK EVER, staring longingly into each other's eyes while their hands lock in an iron grip and they actually, literally FLEX their arm muscles like crazy in this show of brotherly affection. I mean, I know "Band of Brothers" stuff is common with army guys, and it looks kind of romantic to outsiders, but it's HILARIOUS here. Jesse "The Body" Ventura has some scene-stealing lines and fantastic bad-ass moments. It's basically a huge, ball-hair-growing movie of manliness, complete with "I fight the thing by myself, with only a melee weapon", explosions, blood and gore, etc. It also has sequels... most of which people don't like. It naturally spawned a franchise over these non-speaking, bad-ass, dreadlocked warriors that kill great fighters for trophies. A random one-off in Predator 2 (a xenomorph head is seen in a Predator's trophy case) sparking a HUGE THING with the Aliens franchise gave it an extra lease on life, too. Generally, though, people only like the first movie.

-A Predator also appears in Mortal Kombat X, using its array of high-tech gear and melee weapons to great effect. Something so "busy" is a nightmare in 3-D graphics, and so his hair and all sorts of other things "clip" into each other with great frequency. Though they had the foresight to give him a different "Chestburster" fatality than the other characters- his resembles the Predalien combo that fanboys have been jerking off about since the Aliens vs. Predator franchise began :).

-The Predator was PL 9 in my stats of the Capcom AvP Side-Scrolling fighter, so Mortal Kombating one up isn't that difficult. His moves are mainly based around shooting or stabbing the opponent, but he also adds some tricky stuff like Reptile's Stealth (though it doesn't end when he's struck) and a trap that functions a bit like Scorpion's Spear attack.

God of War

Post by Jabroniville »

GOD OF WAR:
Game Type: 3-D Beat 'Em Up/Hack & Slash
Release Date: 2005
Developer: SCE Santa Monica Studio

-Few games define the modern era of video gaming, and how it's basically turned into the early '90s of comic books, better than God of War. In this series, you essentially play a simple-minded Spartan warrior whose plan is to kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill and kill until all of the Greek Pantheon has been destroyed, because Ares killed his family. Defining how games have corraled the "horny 13-year old" market, there's a minigame where you find a nude Aphrodite (I actually had no idea PS2 games could include naked breasts until I saw a clip of this) and have to press the buttons on your controller to push the buttons of her... sexy-time. Yes, literally a Humping Minigame. And further research (ONLY RESEARCH I SWEAR) reveals that almost all of the God of War games feature this- Aprhodite's is in the THIRD game, and you actually walk in on her going all Bound with her Handmaidens! Now if only the graphics in video games had hit the levels they're at in films, this would avoid the Uncanny Valley... but nope. They move all weird, especially when they're talking.

-So yeah, this Kratos guy is essentially a modern-day Conan the Barbarian, but with even MORE exaggerated masculinity, as he kills and bangs his way across the ancient world after Ares tricks him into killing his own wife and daughter. Now, the game isn't COMPLETELY mindless, as there's puzzles and junk. But mainly you run around killing everything. The graphics were excellent, the character manly (Marvel took equal parts of him and Riddick to remake the modern-day Drax the Destroyer), and the sales magnificent- the series has had multiple sequels, numerous power-ups (I'm not even going to attempt to include all of them), and even a movie was planned... and promptly thrown into Development Hell, where it might never be released (especially after so many high-profile Video Game Movie disappointments, in addition to trouble with the Sword & Sandal genre in general). It's considered one of the better all-around games of the post-2000 era.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 43 / Defenses: 20 (178)

-Kratos is a warrior, plain and simple. Like a lot of "Kill 100s of Guys At Once" characters, he's very powerful, but not so well-rounded. At least until he packs on four different weapons over the course of his journey, leveling them up so that he becomes a fairly-decent (though PL 10) Blaster, in addition to a PL 11 Scrapper. The "Army of Hades" power is the most-vicious at PL 11, but is very Unreliable (it takes up half a full bar of Mana to use).

And then there's the new game that came out recently, that is basically a whole different ball of wax, since Kratos is now older, wiser, not (always) as angry and with a child to raise.

-Kratos appears in Mortal Kombat (2011) for the Sony PlayStation 3, which even advertises him on the cover. Humorously, he's basically the Triple-H of the game- they try SO HARD to keep up his "Bad-Ass" aura in the game that during Fatalities, he refuses to act afraid (such as against Freddy's or Kung Lao's fatality), or try to escape (such as from Rain's fatality), and can't be humiliated by certain things like Johnny Cage placing a trophy on his head, like every other character. He's even so broken that he's banned in tournaments- he does too much damage! It looks like somebody didn't want their precious pet to be too humiliated. Ed Boon states that this was the specific request of Sony Computer Entertainment, as it went "against his character" to be anything but fearless.

-Kratos ends up a very versatile Kombatant, brutalizing enemies with his Blades (actually part of his baseline punches!), Bow, an Affliktion, an Area Attack, and even a projectile-deflecting set-up. Still, he's much less powerful than his God-Killing God of War version.

Re: Jab’s Builds (D’Vorah! Kotal Kahn! Freddy! Jason! Alien & Predator!)

Post by Jabroniville »

And thus finishes my Mortal Kombat builds!! Quite a long, arduous set to go through, made much simpler by the fact that I could simply re-use the builds I made 5-ish years ago. I can't imagine how long this would have taken if I couldn't have done that! It's funny how 90% of the build work was done in the last 2-3 days I was working on them, since I waited until the end to design all the "Outworld" characters, which left most of the newbies... and then I had to stat up the horror guys.

Next up... the last few sets of builds before 2019!! I guess since it's been two years since Echoes started (and thus this incarnation of my build thread), plus near the end of 2018, I should do a bit of a thing announcing many potential sets I could do. A "State of the Thread", if you will:

This Month (in order):
* The Exiles (still stuck on the original ATT are Marvel's Exiles! Most of this is just re-posting)
* Kim Possible (SO MANY YEARS I've waited, and of course it's only a week-long set at best, lol)
* Marvel- The Letter "L" (just about finished these!)
* Ballz (small, simple cast, and then I can get it out of the way :))

Early 2019 (not really in order):
* The Teen Titans (both eras!)
* Killer Instinct (you BULLIES have made me do it! I wasn't at all interested, but you BULLYING BULLIES have FORCED me to! *sob*!)
* Martial Champion (so simple and easy to do!)
* Tekken (BULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS)
* Rise of the Robots (haha, forgot about this legendary pile of suck)
* Super Mario Bros.
* HBO's OZ (just re-posts)

Other Things (perhaps in the far future):
* Superior Soldiers
* Way of the Warrior
* Kasumi Ninja
* ThunderCats
* Astro City (honestly, it's one of my oldest "non-re-posted" sets, but I'm waiting until their N-Forcer-focused TPB comes out)
* Eternal Champions (re-posts)
* King of Fighters (I just need a list of every move the guys can do!)
* World Heroes (re-posts)
* Marvel- The Letters "D", "F", "M" & "P" (OMG ALMOST DONE!)
* He-Man & She-Ra
* The Muppets (I'm kinda curious, but I KNOW this would result in like 2-3 comments, total :P)
* Justice League Unlimited (re-posts)

I dunno- I'll keep busy. Sometimes I wonder what I'd do if I just ran out of stuff to stat :)! I mean, it could happen! I guess I'd just re-post guys ever 5-6 years like I've been doing lately (mixed in with new stuff).

I can't really say anything about the mortal combat version of the character, but this one seems a little low in regards to Strength and Stamina. Kratos regularly overpowers giant monsters and survives things the would kill a normal man.
