Well most of the rich and powerful people all know how to and use writing.
And most of the people who would interact with them, even if they can't read, would know their documentations by their seals and insignias. Plus there'd probably still be deeds, permits, and heaven knows what other kinds of paperwork kicking around.

I would assume you could make some money doing forgeries in bigger cities, but in the smaller towns the opportunities wouldn't be as plentiful.

If you think about it, forgery is easier when only a few people can read what your fake actually says. And in the case of seals, those are more easily duplicated than a signature if you have the right tools.

Honestly it was meant as more of a nod to Pelor been god of agriculture (he's god of a lot of things and used to get the plant domain). But your idea sounds way better.

Yeah, I kinda liked the idea of Jade being only psudo-literate. A hint of flavor of the old barbarian class. :P

Well...see the problem is that I suck at playing magic-users. So someone else will have to hit that softball Arkrite through up there. :)

Gnomish barbarians are the most fun though! I've actually played one twice.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

This is what I get for trying to bust his chops. Of course he'd like the idea. ;~)

Could just reskin a halfling or gnome stat-block into a kobold. Could be fun.

And if you really wanna bust his chops point out that even Thorp submitted a build before Shock did!

If we were using other books outside PHB, they are in Volo's Guide to Monsters, so the stats would be easy enough to find.

(Related note, I also have no particular issue if other books were opened up on a case by case basis, I'm happy with Jade as she is, so I wouldn't feel cheated or anything. Just sayin')
