The only time I can ever recall seeing Powderkeg was a somewhat infamous goof on Kurt Busiek's part when he was writing JLA for a while, where the Flash was fighting DC villain Sledge, who looks alot like Powderkeg.

It's kind of surprising that not only did that goof get past Busiek but also Dc Editorial who.....well actually given the state of editorial in comics period at the time.........it's surprising it got past Busiek.

well two things

As Eddie Murphy once said if you can sing, you're getting laid. It doesn't matter what you look like.

Likewise, Tyler there was considered fairly attractive in his younger days.

edit: unless you're saying Liv Tyler isn't hot. and she's not my cuppa tea so I get it....ya know except in One Night At McCool's

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- The Porcupine is a simple criminal.
Reputation/Responsibility (Wash-Out)- Gentry is crippled by low self-esteem (most of which is well-earned -- he SUCKS), having proven himself a wash-out as a villain. He always tries to sell his armour, and he really just wants to retire.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 39 / Defenses: 11 (93)

-The Porcupine's another silly '60s villain with your standard origin ("I created a suit and now I want to COMMIT CRIMES with it instead of sell it!") created by Stan Lee & Don Heck, the mini-superstar team of the Silver Age, working on the D-Level Hank Pym book. He became known as "Just one of those guys", much like The Eel, The Human Top and Paste-Pot Pete-- a guy who was goofy and stupid, and wasn't to be taken seriously. Becoming a joke quickly, he threatened Pym a few more times, but was mostly a Journeyman Villain-type who would show up for a second to fight almost ANYBODY for a laugh, usually in groups of other weak villains.

-Alexander Gentry built his suit, but believed that his government bosses wouldn't pay him well for it. Angry, he decided to become one of the first costumed super-villains ever. He fights Ant-Man and the Wasp, and later Giant-Man, a fight which leaves him shrunk after drinking what he thinks is Growth Serum. He returns to normal size in time to invade the wedding of Reed Richards & Sue Storm alongside a dozen other bad guys. He later becomes part of Count Nefaria's villainous goon squad, alongside other losers like the Unicorn & Eel. He later fights Captain America a few times, alongside his buddies and Batroc's Brigade. Other repeat foes include Iron Man, Captain America and the Defenders, almost always with an ally or two. Generally, he gained a reputation for being somewhat pathetic and easily defeated.

-This would be used by Mark Gruenwald on his Captain America run, as Porky would attempt to retire, and sell his costume for a tidy profit. Of course, nobody was buying (the guy was a JOKE), and so he made a deal with Cap -- The Avengers would buy the outfit, but only if Cap got help in locationg members of the Serpent Society. Unfortunately, during the battle, Porcupine got involved when he was trying to flee, and he fell while inside his damaged costume- he was killed by one of his loose quills. His suit ended up in Avengers Mansion, with a plaque describing him as an "Honored Foe of the Avengers".

-The Porcupine's legacy wasn't strong- he was simply a disposable Journeyman Villain who fought most of the Marvel Universe at some point, and his death was probably his biggest moment- it was treated as a real unfortunate tragedy. The character has never truly returned- the only appearance after his death was in the comedy She-Hulk, as a witness at Trapster's lawsuit against the Tinkerer. When She-Hulk points out that he's supposed to be dead, Porcupine realizes that she is correct, and drops dead on the spot.

-Porcupine's a class goofy-ass villain, being a PL 7 Ranged fighter, and a PL 6 Quill-based fighter. The suit's actually quite versatile, with a Multiattack, standard Blast, Area Blasts, several Area Afflictions, Hypnosis, a Smoke Screen, and a Quill Aura that damages anyone who touches him (OK, only for a DC 17 damage test, but still), but he's still pretty weak, and by the end, almost any hero could defeat him casually. As a result, he needed to be on villain teams to work his magic, no matter how annoying he could be.

Looking it up (ie. I just checked Wikipedia), apparently that's the third (?!) Porcupine, Roger Gocking, who is some guy using the old Porcupine suit, probably from Hobgoblin's "Villain Franchise" thing (Porcupine II was a completly unrelated mutant with the same codename, apparently.)

-The second Porcupine has a very peculiar career, going from "Total Background Nobody" to "#2 Character in an Ongoing Title" with incredible speed. An unnamed Porcupine appears in Daughters of the Dragon, and is easily beaten by Colleen Wing & Misty Knight, then tossed into Doctor Bong. That's it. That's his entire debut. And yet he was in Spider-Woman as the Main Love Interest for the entire run of that book!

-This Porcupine later reappears during a Civil War tie-in, alongside the Eel, three Beetles, and MACH-IV, who leads them in the Thunderbolts. He's so minor (just some Battlesuit Guy) that he doesn't even earn a REAL NAME until a Marvel Handbook comes out featuring the character. It is only after his Thunderbolts run that he appears in Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman ongoing, which features the then-pregnant heroine as the leader of a detective ring. The series as a whole is very light-hearted without going "Full Silly" like so much of Marvel's current output- what little I've read has been quite good, especially the final Trade, which I own. I think the book earned a lot of hate early on because of the questionable costume change, dropping a very popular costume while going "LOL THAT COSTUME F*CKING SUCKED THANK GOD I GOT RID OF IT!", then added a "regular clothes"-looking outfit. Thankfully, the leather jacket part is not very prominent in the series, so the outfit pretty much looks like standard tights for the duration of the issues I have.

-In Spider-Woman, Roger is attenting "Super Villain Anonymous" meetings and committing crimes for his ex-wife, Olivia, who is stressed out to the point of requring a home for battered women, all thanks to his dangerous lifestyle. Roger is trying to earn for the family, but decides to reform, solving crimes alongside Spider-Woman and Ben Urich. Roger, a burly bearded man, is RIDICULOUSLY domesticated in the book to the point of hilarity, basically cooing over and taking care of Jessica's baby boy while she goes on the tough missions, looking like the most Beta of Beta Males ever... and it WORKS. I mean, it's funny- a former Jobber Villain working as a sidekick and nanny for a beautiful, capable super-heroine, while totally, obviously being in love with her.

-In any case, The Hobgoblin (Roderick Kingsley) gets involved, as Roger has a contract to him- as this is during a pretty big push for Hobbie (whose gimmick now is "franchising" Jobber Villain gear to criminals, then taking a portion of their proceeds, resulting in DOZENS of new Legacies out there), it becomes a big deal. Hobgoblin attempts to murder Roger, and nearly succeeds- Jessica is bereft at losing him, and is shocked when Olivia flies into a rage at her for putting Roger in this situation. When Jessica is aghast at the accusation, thinking that Roger WANTED all of that... it's Ben who takes her aside and points out the obvious- that Roger is COMPLETELY in love with her, and did all that just for her. And so when Roger turns up alive, and the two beat Kingsley, Jessica makes out with him and they form a relationship as Spider-Woman is cancelled. Thus making this one of the few Girl-Themed Marvel books of the era to feature a happy relationship.

-Roger is wearing a suit just like the old Porcupine, but a bit more stylish, so I left all the same gear on. He's a more capable fighter and tougher at the baseline, but less smart. His effectiveness is largely because of his desperate need for affirmation from Jessica in particular.

Yeah, that's pretty bizzare and hillarious how THE PORCUPINE of all people not only got a legacy, but then they ended up being an important character. I guess it's like the reason a lot of legacies of old silly villains like Oddball exist: The writers want to reuse them, but the character is too minor to bring back to life (Though that didn't stop the Scourge victims being brought back..)

Sad thing is, there's nothing inherently wrong with the Porcupine armor or name, really. It's a suit of armor with strength enhancement, a diverse array of ranged attacks, and it's hard for anyone to even touch you without them injuring themselves. It's not Iron Man armor, but how laughable it's considered is really out of proportion to how dangerous it is.

Yeah, there are definitely worse powersuits out there, and animal-themed powersuits can have some really interesting results. I suppose a lot of it would depend on how smart and skilled the user is, and they're definitely a threat on a team.

Yeah, it's quite bizarre that he started out as a Darkhawk Villain who had links to a Spider-Man guy, then moved on to fight the Avengers (though in a one-off that Fingeroth, his creator, wrote) and moved on to be related with S.H.I.E.L.D. stuff. Oddly prolific for a guy who started off in Darkhawk.

-Pyromania has a very '90s name that doesn't even make sense (I mean, Pyromaniac would be better, don't you think?), but was stuck in Ravencroft institute alongside Shriek, Mayhem, Gale and a few other characters- this is just following Maximum Carnage, and so Shriek was almost kind of a big deal at the time. A fire-user, he helped out the team (burning the toxic gas of Mayhem, who didn't want to go along with the group's breakout), then attacked Spider-Man & John Jameson (the head of security). He burns through Spidey's webbing, but is used as a weapon against Mayhem, then hit in the jimmy. He recovered, but had to be saved by Spidey when Shriek turned her powers against them.

-That was his only appearance... until Daredevil used him as a mook working for the Hellfire Club. Imprisoned after jobbing to DD, he lures lawyer Matt Murdock into his cell, complaining about cruel and unusual punishment, but just uses it as a front to attack him, in disbelief that a blind man could beat him. DD easily beats him up, but denies the attack to the guards. While Pyromania shudders and repeats "Matt Murdock is not Daredevil" over and over again, Matt nonetheless insists that the punishment (constant bombardment of loud noises) IS cruel and unusual, and that he's still taking his case.

-Pyromania is nothing more than a nuisance to Spider-Man (who, remember, has a notable weakness against Rookie Villains he's never faced before), who merely has trouble keeping him webbed up (thanks to the Aura), but never gets hit.

Yeah, it's just that porcupines don't really evoke much terror as far as names go. Everyone is afraid to touch them, but they don't really have a deadly reputation.

And yeah, it's odd that the suit actually enhances STRENGTH, too, but is still largely the outfit of a jobber. I guess it's really more the man than the suit, I guess.
