Does Blanka (from StreetFighter) officially use Coperia or is that just from the roleplaying game?
I think that's just from the White Wolf RPG. From what I can tell, Blanka's official fighting style is simply considered "Beast Movement/Mimicry".
Yeah SF RPG has him listed under Capoeira

The Fathom Five

Post by Jabroniville »

THE FATHOM FIVE:

Now here's a new team of low-level villains- they debuted in the pages of the 2005 Thunderbolts series. They were a team of Atlantean/Lemurian super-villains, all of whom had confounded Namor The Sub-Mariner in his own titles over the years. Most of them are pretty simplistic at their core (in fact, there's almost zero characterization to any of them) but I kinda liked them- they're Mook-y without being absolute sucky Jobbers of the highest order. They handled the T-Bolts pretty well, and fought them for a GOOD long while before going down. Plus, they're recurring foes of NAMOR, who is VERY powerful, so I figure them for PL 10s. They're your standard "We're Atlanteans and we want to KILL SURFACE DWELLERS!!" characters who are out to just commit terrorist actions.

The team is made up of:
1) Bloodtide- Water Controller, new character to comics.
2) Dragonrider- Sorta like Aquaman, but less sucky- she controls lots of giant Sea Dragons.
3) Llyron- Green clone of Namor. REALLY powerful as a result.
4) Manowar- A giant Jellyfish-like entity that electrocutes people.
5) Sea Leopard- A truly weird guy, he's blue and has a tail. And can fly.

-Llyron is yet ANOTHER "Super Strong Underwater Namor Foe", which comprise about 98% of his Rogues Gallery of baddies. His origin is so completely, ludicrously complicated that it makes M & Penance's look as straight-forward as boiling water- Llyra, an old Namor enemy, got knocked up with a relative of Namor's dad, copied Namor's genetics onto him (after disguising herself as the Invisible Woman and having sex with him), super-aged him in a few moments, and put an engram of her own personality onto him, while the scientist who aided her in the genetic scrambling secretly did so as well, so that his own will would live on. Or something. But basically he's a Green Namor, with scaly membrane wings on his feet instead of feathered ones. Because he had Llyra's personality, he immediately betrayed her and tried to take power himself, telling the Atlanteans that he was Namor's son. Even though Namor disavowed this, Llyron took power, and became the new "status quo", leading Atlantis and even doing a pretty good job of it... but he pretty much just disappeared, as rapid hirings and firings at Marvel, and Namor's fall as a solo book character, doomed Llyron to obscurity- his status as King basically disappeared from comics, being ignored as if it had never happened rather than being retconned. He was last seen trying to raise an army of clones of himself, impregnating many Atlantean females with fetuses... but this never came to anything.

-In Thunderbolts, he "led" the Fathom Five, despite saying almost nothing. Like, it's really weird how he's this non-speaking, uber-powered guy, seemingly there just to challenge the heroes with his mighty. He's never really been a major character in Marvel history- Namor stories tend to just dust off Attuma.

-Llyron is Namor Lite, but actually of the exact same strength-level. He's just not as experienced or skilled, and so he's a much-cheaper variant who's only PL 11 on dry land. This is actually QUITE scary, however, and definitely not to be under-estimated- his power level allows him to brawl with anyone from Namor to The Hulk for a while, and if he hits water, he's going to straight-up kick your ass. It took Radioactive Man to defeat him in the Thunderbolts story, and Dr. Chen is no lightweight.

Namor needs a strong Sorcerer type of foe, with the History of Atlantis in the Marvel universe it would not be that hard. If I remember correctly Varne was a from Alantis before it sunk. Hell he was the first vampire known In the Marvel universe.

-Sea Leopard is just WEIRD- he's up there with The Flying Tiger in a "WTF were they thinking with that Kitty-hybrid name?" sense. He's yet ANOTHER short-lived Namor foe, created mainly to oppose the Sub-Mariner for a short while in his own book, and then he promptly disappeared. I'm kinda shocked how many Namor-based books there've been, but they really give me the sense that he's a "Filler" character of sorts- he lets newbie writers & artists do "Try-Out" stuff for bigger gigs (Iron Fist takes much the same role), and he lets older-school guys like J.M. DeMatteis & John Byrne do something to keep making money. His book'll never be a top seller, but it keeps guys busy, I suppose. I remember a Stan Lee "Bullpen Bulletins" column way back in the '90s that defended the monstrous glut of Marvel books at the time (TWO Ghost Rider books, 3 Punisher ones, Guardians of the Galaxy, Night Thrasher, Sleep Walker, etc.!) using similar reasoning- everyone in comics has to start SOMEwhere, right? And you're not gonna give them Spider-Man or X-Men right off the bat, right?

-ANYways, Sea Leopard is actually a very ancient creature, said to be centuries old. He discovered a lump of Antarctic Vibranium (the unstable, metal-destroying kind) years ago, and has been jealously guarding it ever since. Appearing to have grey skin, claws and sideburns, he's obviously one of those "Bad-Ass Clawed '90s Characters". When Namor came to Antarctica to find Attuma, he instead encountered Sea Leopard- who'd defeated not only Attuma, but Andromeda as well! He fought Namor, and the power of New Villain Stink overwhelmed the Avenging Son- Sea Leopard could handily avoid all of his attacks using predictive telepathy! Eventually, Attuma & Andromeda rejoined the fight, and STILL he held them all off, but this allowed Namor to swipe the armor of Black Moray (a half-nephew), which blocked the Telepathy. With his one gimmick stopped, Sea Leopard was easily knocked unconscious. Namor said he would "decide" upon Sea Leopard's punishment.

-The character only appears in two issues of Namor, and does not show up again until the 2000s Thunderbolts series, which features him as a more background goon. Sea Leopard engaged in the defeat of Atlas (alongside Llyron), but was caught gloating over a powerless Abe Jenkins- an ultra-fast Speed Demon knocked him unconscious with a surprise attack.

-Sea Leopard's another very-reasonable threat- able to brawl and defeat Namor of all people on a few occasions, using the trick that he has TELEPATHY with which to read others' minds and anticipate their attacks. This gives him some boosts to Fighting & Dodge. Like Namor, Orka & Tiger Shark, he's a full PL higher when Underwater, but he can't just be "recently wet" and maintain the same strength-levels: When underwater, he could fly straight through Underwater Jet-Fighter thingies with ease, but outside, he can only aid in taking down Atlas, and got KO'd by Speed Demon with a Multiattack Sneak Attack- not quite the stuff of a Colossus-level powerhouse, right? And of course you gotta take into account the "New Villain Stink" rule, that states that every villain is much better in their first appearances than in any other. Either way, he's a powerful Flying Brick (no bio states that he can fly, but he very much looks to be flying in many T-Bolts pages- at one point he is leaping diagonally downward at Atlas' knee).

The Flying Tigers at least have the excuse of being an actual unit of WWII fighter pilots, mostly American soldiers sent to help defend China from Japan, and adopted as official members of the Chinese Air Force.

I imagine the name Sea Leopard comes from the Leopard Seal, which is also sometimes called a Sea Leopard due to its spots and it being actually somewhat dangerous, with its only natural predator being the killer whale.

I've also been going back over the old ThunderCats TV series, and while it is rough in spots, I'd still stand by it as being a well made and fun show, especially if you take when it was made into account. Snarf was definitely insufferable at the show's start, but he actually mellows out fairly quickly. They also explain why the three Mutants we see are the only ones on 3rd Earth. It's actually kind of hilarious how outmatched the Mutants are compared to the ThunderCats. Three on one they can almost overwhelm Lion-O, one-on-one they each get their buts kicked by the other ThunderCats.

They also actually put a number to Cheetara's speed, saying that for her morning jog she manages about a mile every 30 seconds, which comes to about Mach 1.

-Bloodtide is the only member of The Fathom Five who was an original creation for the Thunderbolts series- she's a Water Controlling turquoise Atlantean lady who operated as kind of a Crowd Control character with her Area Effects. She proved quite powerful (she wrecked the T-Jet with one shot of a Water Blast), but was taken out when Abe "MACH-IV" Jenkins tossed an electrical wire into the Water Stream she was using to fly around. I really like her look, though- a very unusual skin color (light turquoise- a sea-green, basically), combined with an interesting-looking set of white clothing with "swirls" indicated all over.

-Surprisingly, Bloodtide makes up a PL 10 (150) PC-type build, thanks to her rather varied powers, plus the baseline stuff all Atlanteans get. Marvel's Wiki states that they're "ten times stronger" than most people, which adds up to about (10 x 200 lbs.) 2,000 lbs., which is about right for "Above Any Human" stats. She's actually very similar to their leader Undertow, using Water Control as a basis for an Array full of Area Damage, Snares, Moving Stuff and the big Tidal Wave (Knockdown/Damage at range). However, she actually gets the Quirk- Requires Water, since there are a few instances where that could come in as a big weakness- she had to basically drag a river with her during an attack on Manhattan, and the heroes were going to depower her by blocking off her access.

-Manowar is a pretty sweet idea, and very original- a bio-tech creation made up of the elements of a sentient being and a Portuguese Man-O-War, it's the only "Jellyfish Guy" in all of comics that I can think of. Well, except for that member of Gatecrasher's Technet crew who could make people turn jelly-like. It fought Namor once (being created by the land-hungry Portuguese, who'd invaded a raised Atlantean island, and wanted the Man-Of-War to defeat any superhuman opposition), actually doing rather well- it paralyzed one of his sides and nearly ate him, but he managed to fire a Vibranium Gun that dissipated its form. Renamed Manowar, it then got used ten years later against the T-Bolts. It didn't do a whole lot, but managed to KO Ms. Marvel for a bit, and confounded Blizzard before being wiped out by Abe Jenkins in his old "Beetle" armor.

-Manowar's quite complex, packing some "Jellyfish" stuff onto a regular comic book Melee Fighter-type build. Its (not sure of the gender, if any) got a Touch Snare that is Sustained enough to keep people attached to it as it floats around, and both that and the Weaken keep in effect as things go on, allowing Manowar to EAT anyone who's still ensnared! This goes on simultaneously with its other abilities, which include a powerful shock (Ms. Marvel was dropped by it, but eventually recovered) and a wicked Paralytic Tendril effect (Namor was partially paralyzed by it in the creature's debut). Manowar is also a very good grappler. In addition, it's quite tough, and bludgeoning attacks do HALF-damage, making it particularly annoying for someone like Namor, who usually can ONLY hit stuff. It's a pricey combo of powers, but it's only PL 9 defensively.

-Dragonrider is a D-League Namor foe, with the schtick that her Magic Conch (skim that phrase too quickly and you get a VERY wrong and filthy idea) can control up to three Giant Sea Dragons, each of which are basically PL 11 and super-powerful (they were tough enough to hold of Atlas for a while, and smashed the crap out of The Brooklyn Bridge with ease). In Namor's 1980s book, she was an Atlantean guardswoman who grew resentful of the "Big City" Atlanteans for letting poverty reign in the outlying areas, and formed a rebellion. She attacks Namor in the first issue of his book, but he tricks her Sea Dragon into sticking its head into an underwater volcano, defeating it. She is easily pummelled thereafter, and is essentially his prisoner. Dragonrider's allies, Proteus & Jacqueline Trufaut (who gave her the Magic Items in the first place) are the new threats, and Dragonrider basically disappears and isn't explained further.

-She's no great shakes without her Sea Dragons, but she's extremely handy to have with, y'know, GIANT MONSTERS out there protecting her. She's got a pretty nice homage to Triton, Greek God (and son of Poseidon) thing going on there, too. Too bad she has nothing else going for her, and she's actually appeared more in Thunderbolts than she ever did in Namor- good ol' Busiek & Nicieza, always going for the one-shot guys that only the Appendix dudes can find...

A character named Bloodtide recently turned up allied with Namor, I assume it's the same character but for some reason she looks completely different, like a cross between a witch and a vampire.

I also just found out that there was an episode of Thundercats where Snarf manages to become.."Snarf-Ra". Yes, really. Aside from questioning how that even works, why would the Ancient Spirits of Evil just empower anybody who says the incantation?

Well, for starters, not everyone knows the incantation. Snarf only knew it because he'd been held captive and Mumm-Ra had transformed in front of him. It actually lends a further degree of sense to why Mumm-Ra tended to stay in his pyramid: if he left it unguarded, someone could potentially come in and potentially gain some power. The incantation might be something of a ritual where, if said in the right place, the Ancient Spirits of Evil HAVE to empower you.

Snarf, at the time, had also been shape-shifted to look like Mumm-Ra's pet, Ma-Mutt, so that disguise might have been an extra justification for the power up.

But given how much the ThunderCats show would just pull things out of their butts, I wouldn't think about it too hard.

Why does someone with that name and that ability set not get used more? I mean, seriously.

The whole of "Fathom Five" is some really inventive concepts and character designs (ESPECIALLY Bloodtide), but because they're fourth-tier Namor foes, they never get used- instead, we just see Attuma and Orka for the 900th time.
