OK. I guess I didn't see that - though I'm reading on Unlimited, which is 6 months behind.

For the most part, this new Avengers run is pretty satisfying.

I took it as an example of Poe's law. At some point Marvel has become such a mockery of themselves that it has become extremely difficult to tell if they're being serious or being a parody of themselves. But, on the 'good side', they probably sold a few extra issues for people wanting to find out what was really going on.

D'SPAYRE
Created By:

-D'Spayre was created by the Dweller in Darkness, who wished to have an agent on Earth. He slaughtered an Atlantean sorcerer, and fought the man's student, Dakimh the Enchanter, for centuries. Capturing Dakimh and his pupil, Jennifer Kale, D'Spayre is undone by Spider-Man and the Man-Thing. Later, he threatens Cyclops & Lee Forrester, but Cyke uses the memory of Jean Grey (then deceased) to fend off D'Spayre's illusions.
In truth, this fight was over before it began -- a monster whose power is limited to making people miserable never had a chance against Scott Summers.

The Phoenix Force- A Rare Power:
-The Phoenix Force is an odd bit of comics lore, as it was first inextricably linked to Jean Grey, and largely vanished up on her death, but has lately been a "Village Bicycle" of a Cosmic Being. We wouldn't learn a lot about it at first- only that it was a very powerful psionic entity that inhabited the body of Jean Grey, saving her from certain doom as she saved the lives of the X-Men during a space voyage. Though at first, it was initially just the ultimate potential of Jean herself, and gave Jean extremely-high levels of power, making her the most powerful member of the X-Men by a ways, but typically restrained it a little bit... until Mastermind used his mental powers, opening the creaturer up to the concept of evil. Reveling in power and destruction, the Phoenix became corrupted, transforming into Dark Phoenix, and slaughtering an entire world (the infamous "Broccoli People"). The X-Men, with Jean battling from inside the creature, were able to rein it in and fight back, only for Jean to sacrifice her life rather than let the beast out once more.

-We would later learn more about it- the Phoenix Force is the nexus of all the psionic energy that does, has, or ever will exist in all reality. When Jean was resurrected, a means was necessary- it turns out that the Phoenix Force had merely REPLACED Jean's physical body, creating a duplicate and inhabiting THAT, while Jean's true body laid in stasis for years. Kurt Busiek (who came up with the idea), John Byrne (who wrote it in Fantastic Four), and Chris Claremont (who ultimately landed the Phoenix back in his stable of characters) all sort of came up with the "she was using Jean's body and mind as a template to see what humanity was like", and THAT was the Phoenix who was corrupted and died. So it was SORT OF Jean, but not really.

-The true purpose of the Phoenix Force is to be "The Judgment of the Obsolete", which will burn away old things. We'd learn more about it when it empowered Rachel Summers, the daughter of Cyclops & Jean Grey in the Days of the Future Past future, in which Claremont made her his new Pet Character for a time. She was briefly in his X-Men, but moved over to Excalibur. Thought mighty, Rachel rarely seemed nearly as powerful as a "Dark Phoenix", so was more restrained, save for the occasional story here and there. Ultimately, Rachel moved into the futurer, forming the Clan Askani that would raise Cable. On Earth, the Phoenix Force leaped through a portal and attached itself to Prime of the Ultraverse, then a girl named Amber Hunt. She went mad with power, and was beaten by the travelling X-Men, who took the Phoenix back to their own Earth. Jean Grey briefly manifested Phoenix-like powers before she was killed by Xorn in her most recent death.

Modern Phoenix Stuff- Everyone Gets a Turn:
-Retcons would be added in modern times- an early possessor of the Phoenix Force came to Earth and joined a prehistoric version of the Avengers, falling in love with a young Odin at the same time. It would attach itself to a Shi'ar named Rook'shir, who went mad with power and was slain by the Imperial Guard- a sliver of its power would be stuck in his Phoenix Blade, which would empower the Shi'ar X-Men ally Korvus later on. It would reanimate Jean Grey's corpse during Phoenix: Endsong, but she'd go a bit crazy and have to restrain herself- she ultimately disappears. Hope Summers is seen as the inevitable next host, but this never really happens.

-A (vs) X is the next major use of the power, as the Phoenix Force returns to Earth, in an attempt to reclaim Hope... but the X-Men intercede. Cyclops, hoping to use it to restart the Mutant population, decimated on M-Day, grabs it, and it passes to him and four other X-Men (Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus & Magik), who become The Phoenix Five. Most of them are beaten, but Cyclops, crazed with power, defeats and kills Professor Xavier in combat! In the end, Captain America beats Cyclops by getting Hope and the Scarlet Witch to enter Cyclops' mind and reveal Jean Grery, who convinces Scott to let the Phoenix go. And then it enters Hope, who gets it wished away by the Witch, which reactivates mutant genes around the world. So... Cyclops was wrong, but he accomplished his goal? I guess? It was not a well-liked storyline.

-Cyclops uses a "Phoenix Egg" during the incursions and Secret Wars, confronting God Emperor Doom, but is easily killed, along with Thanos. Eventually, post-reboot, the Phoenix finally TRULY resurrects Jean Grey (I think the "White Phoenix" version from Endsong just vanished or willfully disappeared).

-The past two decades leads to the Phoenix Force being a real village bicycle, as I stated- EVERYONE's had a ride. It went from having two hosts in twenty years to having more than TWENTY. It's crazy. And jumping from Jean to Emma to Jean to the Stepfords to basically anyone who wanted a piece of it has just diluted what made it special in the first place. Proper editorial control over jumpy writers really should have been made.

Phoenix Powers:
-Anyone possessing the powers of a Phoenix essentially turns into AT LEAST a PL 13 being, though the Phoenix Five appeared even mightier for a time. Jean Grey even hit PL 18 as Dark Phoenix, but that's a "let it all out and destroy worlds" level of might, and Jean is singularly powerful, even among Phoenixes.

I thought that the Phoenix generally boosted the powers of the host and the whole "omega level psionics" was just a byproduct of being attached to Jean.

The Phoenix Five in A vs X used Telekinesis. I think Psionics are a full part of the deal, too.

That picture above immediately reminded me of this one:

I mean, I'm sure it's a pretty common visual theme, and it's purely coincidence that a NIGHTlord in NIGHTbane world looks a lot like Marvel's NIGHTmare.

Nice Cosmic entities!
I love the Phoenix Force and the pics you used.

? Shouldn't the Phoenix Force itself have it's powers at level 30?

I mean, isn't Xavier and Jean in 2019 at 16-18 with their powers (TP, TK)?

While hosting the PF like in Morrison's run, Jean would be above 18 with her powers, maybe at 20. Jean as Phoenix 22, as DP 24 and as White Phoenix of the Crown 26.

So, am I correct in thinking that the Phoenix Force eventually became a new 'Captain Universe'?

The Infinites

THE INFINITES
Created By:
Roger Stern & Sean Chen
First Appearance: Avengers Infinity #1 (Sept. 2000)
Role: Cosmic Beings, Interlopers From Beyond

-The Infinites came about in Avengers Infinity, a pretty-good Limited Series from 2000 by Roger Stern, a formerly a GREAT Avengers writer, whose workman-like run often got overlooked, but lacked the stupid of most other runs; and Sean Chen, a good "detail artist" whose main flaw is that he's not quite as good as fifteen other guys with that same style. It featured a ragtag band of Avengers not being used by Kurt Busiek & George Perez on their contemporary Avengers run, with Quasar, Moondragon, Tigra, Starfox and Photon (Stern's beloved Monica "Captain Marvel II" Rambeau, who had fallen into Comic Limbo after Stern left Marvel after being run off of Avengers) teaming up with big-leaguer Thor.

-This band of mostly-unused characters get involved when Jack of Hearts is badly injured, and they discover a spacial rift opened by The Infinites, a band of cosmic beings from beyond the multiverse. Basically, knock-offs of The Beyonders, but whatever. The Infinites try to drag away a galaxy in their attempts to restructure the cosmos to improve energy flow (an act that will kill all living creatures), but Quasar calls upon Eternity for aid. Unable to defeat the Infinites, he combines his essence with that of the Avengers, who do the classic "talk their way out of things" climax. The Infinites confess that they were ignorant of the fact that the planets they were affecting contained life, and so abandon their plan- one Infinite sacrifices its life to restore all the planets that were destroyed.

-The Infinites were of vague power- probably above Eternity's PL 24.

Total: Abilities: 110 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 271 / Defenses: 19 (430)

-I dunno if Gerry Conway was partaking in acid & weed with the rest of the Marvel writers of the '70s, but this 1973 character sure as hell seems to points towards it. Xorr the God-Jewel was created when a race of beings known as the Xorri covered their planet in a nuclear force shield to protect it from a sun that was going nova. Contracting into a fraction of its former size as it moved through space, the planet absorbs the life forces of its population and becomes sentient (which, as astrophysicists know, is what always happens when you wrap planets in shields as their suns go nova). Xorr ends up absorbing energy from other planets and stars, and threatened some of Thor's allies by draining THEM, too- however, Odin, Thor and Mercurio (haha I know him now!) tricked him into absorbing the energy of a star going nova, which caused him to explode. He has never returned, and is believed to be destroyed. Xorr made the claim that the Xorri created all othe other races of the universe, but this has been proven to be incorrect- the Celestials were responsible.

-Xorr the God-Jewel (man, I love that name- this guy needs to make a return just because of that) is alleged to be just as powerful as Galactus, but I refuse to put him at Galactus's level. Instead, he's a weakling PL 19 (which is thankfully easier to make since I've statted Cosmic Beings before- I just take a guy at the appropriate level- in this case the In-Betweener- and shove a few different kinds of stats onto him). He's PL 15 unarmed, throws out PL 16 Drains & Weakens, and can even take power from PLANETS. He's simply too powerful for Thor, Karnilla or even ODIN to take on in a fair fight, and his Drain can easily kill their weaker allies (the Lady Sif, in this case, was being held hostage alongside Karnilla- Thor was afraid to attack). A mere nova eruption of a star "one billion times the size of Earth's Sun" is all it took to kill him, so he doesn't have limitless toughness- just +26.

I hate that anything would make me think of Highlander II, but the "planetary force shield to protect the planet from the sun" thing reminds me of it. And when THAT'S the first thing that's brought up in the sequel to a fantasy-action movie that was just about a bunch of immortal swordfighters fighting each other..yeah, you have a problem. (Insert Star Wars reference here somewhere, though, I dunno.)

I don’t think the Phoenix is more powerful than Galactus, but it’s pretty vague at times. It tends to just do X-stuff, not fight other cosmic beings.

I can give him a small bio. The wording of the tag lines seems to indicate one created magic and another “the first hero” and stuff. Not really anything more than Al Ewing just being flowery with his writing.
