The next month seems to come and go rather quickly. As you would expect, there are numerous visits by authorities and specialists to check in on you for the first week or so, but after that, you're given leave to carry on without further interruptions to your daily routines, but each given a number to call if you need anything or if anything develops.

Beyond that, the stories continue on. Paparazzi are a near-daily occurrence as are messages request interviews from various shows and articles. Really, each of you has the opportunity to make quite a public name for yourselves, but turning them away doesn't seem to fully detur many. It's not impossible to avoid all the attention, but it's trying because it is utterly shocking the apparent resources these people have to track each of you down with anything less than a dedicated effort to shack them.

That said, it's also not impossible to turn this to your own advantage were you creative and of a mind to do so, just a matter how you individually might spin the attention to your benefit.

Lloyd's family, the closest affected to the event, are slowly recovering. Injuries mending without complication, his wife even being released to be home, but in need of a full-time caretaker, at least for the time being while she goes about rehabilitation.

(Alright, all that's left is for you all to post how you've spent the month, how you've dealt with the high level of scrutiny and attention. If you have any things you want to run by me first to set-up, PM away.)

Getting out of the area took longer than she would have liked. But it was nothing like getting through customs. Kara was redirected to the special line as she approached the metal detector. When she was on line, she realized she could see the metal detector readings. But when she walked through, it was as if she was a ghost. The metal detector would not register usage. A security officer ran a metal detection wand up and down her and it found nothing. Still, someone recognized her face and she was sitting in a room for a hour while the security people tried to decide if she was dangerous.

On the plane, she was hoping to sleep but the noise of the electronics kept her up. Every radar tower they flew past had to say hello. Every plane with a few miles also announced its presence. Landing in Miami was the same rigmarole. Checking into her hotel. Over and over. "What really happened up there?" The same question every time. And most people looked at her with disbelieve when she said "You know as much as I do about what really happened."

That evening she arrived at GardenHouse, a farm-to-table eatery that she was there to review. When she arrived, she was seated promptly and her waiter recognized her from the incident within minutes. This would not have been any worse than any other siting except he added. "Oh wait, you're the food critic." And my cover was blown. Usually I go to a restaurant twice when I do a review. Once unannounced, and once giving them warning ahead of time. Oh well. Food wasn't bad. A bit overpriced and underproportioned.

She thought about calling Vance but she was still on the fence about telling him what happened. It seemed every day she found a new ability. Telekinesis was today's ability. She had forgotten her hair conditioner in the shower. As a joke she pretended to move it with her mind. And it did. It amused her more than amazed her. Sure, I can do that too. Why not?

She needed to get away from it all. She went to the one place she never thought about going very often. Home. Open Plains, America. Wyoming. Her parents will be glad to see her. She dreads flying again so soon. And she dreads the paparazzi following her there so she rents a storage facility in walking distance to the hotel. One where you can just come and go as you please. She checks out of the hotel and brings her luggage to the facility. Late in the afternoon, she closes the outer door to her rental and locks it from the outside while still inside. The eight by eight foot room with just a pair of luggage bags sitting it amuses her as she feels for the electrical wires in the ceiling. With a blink she disappears from the storage facility in Miami.

Near instantly, she is in a barn. Looking around, it looks like her father's barn. She steps out of the barn and looks up at the sun. It's definitely higher in the sky by a couple hours. She sees her family homestead. She walks up to the back porch and opens the door. "Mom, Dad, I'm home."

"Kara dear. Oh, thank god, you're alright." After a few moments of Mom praising god she was alive, Mom realized she hadn't heard a car pull up. "You didn't tell us you were coming. We could have picked up in Riverton. You didn't rent a car did you?"

"I have a long story to tell you, Mom. Where's Dad?"

"Bill is working on a broken tractor on the southern field with Ol' Jake. Don't know when they'll be back. Probably be drinking some of Jake's "transmission fluid" before they're done."

Without going into too many details, Kara told her mother and father exactly how she arrived in Lost Cabin, Wyoming this afternoon. Dad asked a few pointed questions but Mom was mostly silent. Kara could tell her mom was about to freak out. But before she could do anything, Jeremy, her brother, and his family arrived. And Mom put on her hostess face and went about making dinner. Dad gave her a look and Kara indicated she might tell Jeremy later but not in front of the kids.

When he found out, Jeremy thought it was the coolest thing ever and wanted to know if Kara was going to wear a leotard and fight crime. His wife Emma thought he was crazy and only a slut would want to wear clothes like that. Good old Emma.

Later, the house was quiet and Bill knocked softly on Kara's door. "I talked with your Mom. She's not freaking out about you as much now. She just thinks you're going to use this as an excuse to put off settling down with the Vance fellow."

"I don't need to settle down with anybody." She said. "Besides. I don't know if I should tell him about what happened."

"I know. I know, Kare Bear," Dad said. He looked a bit more serious and said, "I was wondering if you could help out. Jake and I can't fix the tractor where it's at and it ain't safe to drive his flatbed out to it. Maybe you could move it."

"I don't know, Dad. I haven't tried moving anything as big as a tractor."

"Well, there's always a first time. You should find out if you can do it."

"I should."

In the morning, Kara and Bill went out to the tractor. a good ten minute walk where they talked about mundane things. With a thought, she lifted the tractor in the air and floated it all the way back to the barn without working up a sweat.

"I believed you when you said you just teleported here. But seeing this makes that reality more real, Kare Bear," her father said.

"I barely believe it myself, Dad."

"That seemed easy. I wonder what your limit is," he said.

After a week, she said goodbye to the family. As much as she loved reviewing hoity-toity restaurants, she was going to miss her mother's cooking when she left. And she told her so. An instant later, she was in the storage facility in Miami. Her phone rang. It was her Mom, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Mom," she said. "What-- what did it look like?"

"One minute you were there. Then next there was a soft popping sound and your were gone."

"I told you that would happen."

She flies out the Charlotte, SC for her next review. On the plane she finishes the review for the restaurant in Miami. Her boss calls her that night. "Do you know how many interview requests I get from people who want to talk to you?"

"I can guess."

"It could be good advertising for the magazine."

"Food and Wine magazine is pretty well known without exploiting my 15 minutes of fame."

"I suspect it may last more than 15 minutes," her boss continues. "It's been almost three weeks and the Okanagan Five are still being written about in the tabloids."

"Yeah, I'll let them know when I give birth to an alien."

"That's what they want to hear."

"Haha."

"I'm serious. People want to know what happened. How you survived. And they hasn't been anything to distract them away from it."

"Well, I think my review niche would be harmed by a big publicity stunt. So no interviews."

"Okay. Okay. I won't bring up again until the next time I do."

"I knew I could count on you," she says.

At the end of the month, Kara is in Austin, TX finishing up another review.

To the average observer, the world was full of endlessly complex chaos where nothing was certain. Violent incidents came without warning, earthquakes rocked cities out of the blue, pets would slip away out of nowhere, a sudden rainstorm would catch you without an umbrella, politicians rise to the top of a field out of nowhere, and companies could suddenly file bankruptcy and investors would be out millions. A sheer matter of unpredictable luck. Jackson knew otherwise.

The world was a complexly woven tapestry of patterns, where a tug of a thread in one area would change the design of the whole as it snags on a dozen more. Everything was connected.

Even for someone of his intellectual capacity the complete understanding of all the world’s patterns would be immensely difficult. He could however set his focus on specific key areas that would still yield wide-reaching results. One prime example, the Canadian Securities Exchange. One could achieve outstanding success by taking care to observe the status of companies on display and the way each one interacted, dedicated observation of the consumer's market, and several dozen other factors including things most would never consider. Best part of all, one could find a way to do this completely anonymously and in a way to never draw too much attention from the companies in question.

It was from this careful plucking away at stocks that Jack had managed to procure the funds he needed if he wished to start dedicating himself to the research he had in mind. The equipment purchased and located could be done without drawing eyes as well, such as having packages delivered to unowned lots that happened to be missing for-sale signs or dropped off at homes during hours where nobody was home, leaving them unguarded for anyone to come by and snatch them up. Such methods were only for the equipment and material one couldn't simply salvage from junkyards, a treasure trove of scrap for any fledgling engineer if they knew what they were doing.

That being said, doing all this work within his garage was more awkward then he'd have liked.

"So far, Gold is having marginal success rates compared to other pure metals..." He muttered, more out of habit than necessity to record his research verbally. Everything was already memorized and floating within his augmented reality.

While he was still working on his primary goal of finding the seams between this reality and theirs so that he might unravel the mystery further, it was an admittedly very hard task to accomplish. As such, he had a few side projects he was working on to both occupy his mind and make it feel like he was actually doing something worthwhile.

A thin thread of gold between wrapped around the rubber parts of two clamps vibrated slightly just underneath the mounted magnifying glass he was using. Just above it was a list of scientific data that was vital for one of those side-projects, likely the most beneficial to him personally by far. "I've still yet to achieve similar results to my experimentation with neon. The practicality aspects of using a gas within equipment however limits its usefulness."

Mental strength he was directing towards the thread receded back into his head, along with an accompanying headache that made him wince. "Perhaps Platinum will yield better results."

With care he removed the thin wiring and re-wound the small spool of golden thread he had procured. An expensive commodity right alongside the platinum spool he was using earlier, but he needed these elements to be as pure as possible for his plans to work correctly.

On the opposite side of his makeshift lab was an empty cage. At the start of his experiments he decided to try training his inherent psychic nature on small animals such as lab rats, but the result was the same every time. After several seconds of mental exposure, the subject would suddenly start convulsing while bleeding from their eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. Not a single one lasted a minute, and even those he immediately cut off mental contact with suffered from long-term brain damage.

In the simplest terms, his mind was simply too strong for any lone mind to handle. That was what his work here was for, to discover the ideal material he'd need to construct equipment capable of handling his mind. From there... well. He had some ideas.

Jackson scooted away from his desk and started to massage his temples, the dull ache making it hard to think clearly, as it usually did. He needed a break. From this work, as well as everything else.
"Maybe I should try getting to... ah." He paused, and noticed just how long he'd stayed up that night. "Well... Tabby's probably made a pot of coffee at least."

The smartest man in the world left his chair with a groan, stretching his sore muscles after having sat in one place for too long. Just because his office chair was top of the line, didn't mean it was the best idea to sit in it for twelve hours straight.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

Lloyd Lee Tremblay
HP:1
Cnd: Normal

After the meeting in the Donut shop, Lloyd’s anxiety doesn’t abate very much. He wants some form of closure (or the promise of closure). The meeting provides him with precisely the opposite, namely an indefinite period of paranormal abilities and the attention it garners.

Thankfully, I’m not alone, he reasons. Misery loves company. Of course, it’s not clear that the others are as miserable as I am. At least I have their contact information. Maybe we’ll form the first members of a new “Superheroes Anonymous” therapy program for para-normals.

Within a week, Margie and the boys are back at home. Charles along with one of Margie’s girlfriend’s, Lynda, chip in to provide assisted care for his wife. Lloyd too resumes his regular workday as soon as his truck is repaired. Though it seems like his life might return to the pleasant routines of the past, those illusions are quickly shattered.

From day one, The Press hounds him relentlessly. At first he restrains himself, hoping things will soon blow over. But as conspiracy theories develop, and the miraculous way that the five of them avoided any injury despite the deaths of so many, the media attention only grows.

Over the next few weeks, most of Lloyd’s remaining abilities manifest or become apparent to him. He loses his temper with the paparazzi one day but manages to restrain his frustration until they are removed from his property. Then – an hour later, while installing an HVAC compressor on a job site, his radiation-vision manifests. The damage to the unit is minor, but only because he wasn’t looking directly at it. It could have been much worse, especially if he were staring at some poor individual. The realization of this scares him.

Every day, he tests a few of his abilities in the hopes that they are fading, but they never do. In fact he occasionally tests his bodies resilience to damage and finds that no matter what he does, he is virtually impervious to the pain and injury. After three weeks of strugling with the issue, he reluctantly decides to tell his family.

He invites Charles and his girlfriend over for a Saturday cookout along with both sets of grandparents and several cousins. He wants them all to hear it from him before they discover the truth some other way. After everyone has eaten and the adults have relaxed with a few drinks, he calls everyone onto the back patio. The kids stop playing and everyone gathers around curious as to what this is all about.

He sets his beer down on the table, clears his throat, and nervously begins to speak. “I’m glad everybody made it this evening…and that everyone is having a good time. I have an announcement to make, and I hope you’ll hear me out before you say anything.

He pauses, looking from face to face, in order to convey how serious he is. “You all know how much our family has been through over the last few weeks. Our lives have been turned upside down in more ways than one. I know that many of you have wondered how I fared so well when so many others were hurt or killed. To that I’ll just say, ‘God only knows.’

Lloyd begins to noticeably struggle to continue and his anxiety becomes apparent to all. “I…I have noticed some changes…about myself. I know that I look the same to everyone else, but I’m not the same. I want you to hear this from me before you hear or see it somewhere else.

Everyone stared silently at the burly man standing before them. Was Lloyd sick? Did the event have some horrible after-affect like cancer?

For starters I can do things like this…” Lloyd slowly begins to levitate the ground, hovering effortlessly some 3 feet above the concrete patio. “I can also do things like this…” He takes a stainless-steel wrench in both hands and bends it into the shape of a “’U” with no noticeable effort before tossing it at the feet of his father-in-law.

As he slowly comes to land on the patio, he looks around to everyone there. “Those are just a few of the things. There’s more…as I’m sure you’ll discover in time. I wish I knew what in God’s name was going on…but I don’t.

He picks his beer back up and takes a large gulp of it.

Lindy Tommasi
HP: 1

Lindy drove down to Washington to visit Emily. The drive had been mostly uneventful except for the search of her belongings and questioning at the border. Emily was busy with classes so the two had dinner and Emily told Lindy about her current boyfriend Eric. As expected, Lindy asked dozens of questions about the boy. How old is he? What is his major? How long have you been seeing him? Have you slept together? Where does he live? Emily patiently answered all those and more.

Lindy stayed the night in a nearby hotel. In the morning she saw several voice mails and texts on her phone. Most were from her agent Melinda. The first call was the news that Lindy had landed the gig with the army. Her own time in the army had been a mix of good times and bad. The other messages from Melinda were about interview requests from the major networks and talk shows. They all wanted her story. Problem was, she had no story to tell. She texted Melinda back to decline all interview requests. The most intriguing message from Melinda was about a last minute job in two weeks. There was a fandom convention of some sort in Sacramento and a major sci-fi magazine needed a replacement photographer. Melinda went on and on about how this could be great exposure for Lindy and could lead to more work. Lindy called her back and after getting more information, accepted the job.

Lindy scrolled through the remaining messages. A couple from her mother, surprising. One each from her brother and sister. Most important was the message from her insurance company. They decided to cover the damages to the rental car she left at the park the day the incident happened.

Lindy drove towards Sacramento. She checked online maps of the area first and had decided to spend some time out in Eldorado National Forest before her assignment. The solitude would be good. It would give her time to think and time to test her abilities away from the public.

(Just for reference, I'm going to let you all play your personal NPCs, so family and close friends and stuff. If you want to find out if they know something about something, you can ask, but if you're using them in that capacity, you should probably have Contacts. :) )

As the one month anniversary of the event closes out, you each start to hear rumors of some weirdness happening around ground zero. On a surface level, it sounds benign, weird lights and sounds, people feeling ill when in close proximity to what used to be the park which has put a stop to restoration for the time being until it can be investigated.

As far as any of you can research, this wasn't something that occurred prior to the accident that resulted in your powers and many lost lives, but a lot of it sounds like it could be teenagers messing around, or a gas leak. Still, something about it niggles at the back of your mind as not quite right.

The RCMP, of course, are wary and have the area under lockdown for investigation, making any conventional approach rather difficult.

Lindy Tommasi

Lindy sat on the couch wit her laptop reviewing the photos she shot at the convention. It had been a fun job except for when a writer cornered her asking questions about the incident. She had denied knowing anything other that what had already been reported. The writer asked if aliens were involved or if it was a conspiracy. Again, Lindy had no comment. After several minutes she finally had been able to break away and blend in with the crowd using her invisibility. It was fortunate that she had spent some time alone working to get better control of the things she had already discovered she could do. Along the way, new abilities had emerged. It was exciting and frightening at the same time.

As she reviewed the photos, making notes of the various costumes the attendees had created, she began to mentally decide which designs and costume details she liked best. Lindy had still not convinced herself to go fight crime but it wouldn't hurt to have a costume. Even if she didn't fight crime, she could at least wear it to a future convention.

A little pop-up note showed in the corner of the screen. Another news story about the park where everything had happened. She clicked on it and the article from a small local news station in that arra opened on her screen. It was more reports of people getting sick near the park. More reports of strange lights and sounds. The article indicated these could be continuing pranks by bored teens but Lindy suspected otherwise.

Kara was in Austin, Texas relaxing in the jetspa of her hotel room. She was monitoring the local news (without using the hotel room's television), flipping back and forth between the different local stations. Her leisure ended when the anchor started a story about a location she was sick of hearing about. People getting sick on the restoration projects for the park where the event happened. She started an Internet search for more details but there were none. Maybe it was just some school kids pranking people. But she knew deep down it wasn't.

She made a quick call to her editor and told him she would be unavailable the next few days. He had no problem with this. Then she made a reservation at a hotel. She gathered up some clothes and shifted herself to the bathroom of the donut shop she last saw her fellow survivors. She walked down to the park. It looked different. Well, not too different. Some cleanup was started and then abandoned. The mounties still had the area cordoned off and there weren't any powerlines inside the park that she could use to teleport in.

From there she stopped in a store and bought a small luggage bag. Bag in tow, she checked into the hotel using her personal credit card, not her corporate diner's card backed by the magazine. Once in the hotel she made a few teleport hops back and forth to Austin to have enough clothes for a few days in Canada. In Austin, she checked out of the hotel and left her luggage behind. She would call later to ask them to ship it to her. She really needed a permanent address, she realized.

Once settled in the hotel, she sent Lloyd a text, "Long time, no see, right? People getting ill? Know anything? I'm in town."

He has been contemplating for some time, that he'd need to re-visit the incident site. The data he had was just too incomplete, gathered purely by his own personal analysis of the situation at hand rather then using the dedicated scientific equipment he'd been slowly gathering within his lab. Unfortunately, while it never really had 'public access' beforehand, it's become much more inaccessible then it once was. Somehow he needed to find a way inside, but how exactly was he to accomplish this on his own? What he needed was someone who could help get him in unseen. A partner. Maybe, perhaps... a team.

The man sat in his car within his company's parking lot. With careful dodging of questions and some manipulations of the information available online, he was still maintaining a visage of tentative anonymity. The rumors had long since died down among his coworkers, though there was the occasional person that referred to him as a 'Survivor'. These claims were pushed down whenever he could, with the instance that there were a lot of survivors. He was nobody special beyond simply having been there at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Phone in hand, he dialed by memory one of his fellow special nobodies. "Lindy, it's Jack. I think we need to meet up somewhere."

Lindy Tommasi

Lindy browsed the articles she could find about the current happenings at the incident site. There wasn't much. Each one just repeated the same basic information. Strange lights and sounds, people becoming ill, that sort of thing. One did mention the area was being closed off for safety concerns and additional restoration was stopped until further notice.

She sighed and set the laptop down on the coffee table. She got up and grabbed a snack and some bottled water from the kitchen. As she returned to the living room, she paused to look at a photo of Emily, taken on her first day at college. Lindy had nearly told her daughter about her new abilities but forced herself to keep them secret for now. It was too big a risk. Someone might kidnap Emily to force her to do criminal deeds.

Lindy was shaken from her self reflection by the sound of a specific ringtone. After getting the other's contact information back in Canada, she had assigned each one a specific ringtone and message sound. The tone now playing loud and clear was the theme from the Twilight Zone. Lindy snatched her phone from the table and accepted the call.

"This is a surprise. I wasn't expecting to hear from you so soon."
"Lindy, it's Jack. I think we need to meet up somewhere."
Judging by the sound of his voice, it didn't sound like a social call.
"A date? Sounds great! Just tell me the time and place."

"A date-?!" Came his choked response, the man sputtering and choking on some coffee he'd taken with him from the office. His inability to breath may have been resolved quickly, yet the headache encroaching upon him was only getting started. Maybe He should've tried Lloyd first, or Kara. Possibly even their wayward friend, though they'd rather break his bones then break a sweat to help him.

"Fine, sure. Call it what you want." Jack spoke while pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation. "I just got off work, are you in the area?"

Lloyd Lee Tremblay
HP:1
Cnd: Normal

Since revealing his secret to his close family, things haven't been much better, Lloyd had hoped to ease the shock once the inevitable facts came out. The only one who think it's "cool" is his 4-year-old, Grant. Fortunately, his youngest is only 1 year old and has no clue about what is happening.

His parents and in-laws are concerned, and over the past 4-weeks have been counseling Lloyd to seek specialized medical care. Besides doubting that his "new body" is ill, he doesn't want to subject himself to poking and prodding if it's unnecessary.

His wife has been the hardest person to read. At first, Margie seemed worried, but as time has progressed, and no negative side-effects have manifest, she has become rather enamored with Lloyd's new abilities. She's also tossed around a few half-mocking superhero names like "Captain Beer-drinker" and "Super Hubby". Since Lloyd is trying his hardest to keep his abilities under wraps, life has retained quite a bit of its pre-event routines and normalcy. That is until the news reports started to come in from "Ground Zero".

Every other day or so, Lloyd swings by the park, but cannot get close due to the pending investigation. He keeps any local newspapers and magazine articles about the site in his den just in case he needs to reference them for future use. Maybe one of the people who've gotten ill would be willing to talk about their experience.

One morning while driving to a job site, he gets a text from Kara: "Long time, no see, right? People getting ill? Know anything? I'm in town." He finishes his drive, pondering all the while what to say. All the folks who shared his experience were nice people...er...almost all. Anyway, he's still hoped that when they parted ways, that would be the end of things. He picks up his phone just as he finishes parking his truck.

"<Hello Kara. Yes, I've been monitoring the news here in town. I go by the site every few days, but I can't get close. I get off work at 4:00 P.M. Wanna meet for a donut and coffee?>"

Poor Jackson, I embarrassed him. I'll apologize when I see him. Lindy thought as she listened to his response.

"If you mean, am I in Kelowna? Then no, not currently. I can be there in a couple of hours at the earliest if that works for you. I just need to pack a few things if I'll be staying longer than overnight."
