The Merge: Agents and Powers Chapter 2: Agents Abroad

Post by Neo-Paladin » Sun Nov 10, 2019 1:27 pm

" ...Rumors have started to circulate that minor superhuman individuals are sent by the Chinese government under the guise of police forces against protesters. Meanwhile, there is some evidence that some of the protesters have resorted to magic to defend themselves. The CCP is seriously considering sending in the Great Ten, provoking catastrophic escalation..."

"...was this the fifth assassination of a Brazilian police officer this week by the terrorist group Aliança de liberdade, a vigilante group composed of an unknown number of powered individuals who have taken it upon themselves to, quote, 'punish corrupt and tyrannical elements of a neo-fascist government and work our way up the ranks'. In a statement today, a furious Jair Bolsonaro promised to hunt down...."

Hagen switched off the tv and looked at his superior. " We're just in time. I hope. This isn't Brazil, this isn't China. But things are getting worse on the streets. The Right, the Left...and that's not taking into account the Night War. And if we don't find some way to legitimize at least some elements of the superhuman community, they will all turn to vigilantism. And be utterly uncontrollable."

He could see that Seehofer, minister of the Interior, was less than pleased. He'd allowed the formation of this sub-ministry only grudgingly and this new initiative was clearly not sitting well with him. The older bavarian man sighed. " Hagen, I will not work with these...elements. They are ALREADY uncontrollable. I am already not happy with half the recruitment choices you made. Some of these people openly insult our Christian traditions."

Hagen scoffed. " Please. You know I am the best man for this job. And you people only hold up the Christian traditions when it suits you and forget them the next day. I will get things under control. I promise. But only if you let me work the way I see fit. And that means I will recruit the devil himself if I have to. I love this country and I will not let it go any further downhill just because you, the chancellor and everyone else is too damn scared of the future. Weren't the G20 riots enough already? God won't help you. I will."

Seehofer gave him a sharp glare. " This discussion is not over", he muttered, then turned and left. Hagen smirked. The minister hadn't said no. Sure, he hadn't explicitly said yes either, that way he could wash his hands of anything Hagen did. But it was probably the best he could have hoped for at the moment.

He put on his glasses again and started to make some calls. Fortunately, he knew some people in the DXDO...

Three months, she thought. It had been three months since she was visited by a DXDO agent and told they were aware of her plans to take a job from a certain known crime lord. The agent did not say they had any evidence of her prior work but it was a wake up call that second story work was no longer as simple to control the risk on. Magic, alien tech, sci-fi tech, it all contributed to the greater risks. She had a good sum of money squirreled away in various banks and asset management funds to retire from the life of crime she had been living. She didn't need every sparkly gem to pass through her hands at some point. Worst case scenario she could always revive her consulting firm. Security testing was almost as exciting as a normal heist.

Adeleth sat on her balcony lazily sunbathing. The benefit of living on a floor so high in the air made it so she didn't have to worry about tan lines. While this life of leisure sometimes grated on her nerves, at the moment she was content to relax. When she needed to do something, something would fall into her lap that would require her to act. Better to not think about it or it might happen sooner than she wanted. She was on good terms with fate and destiny. No need to make them think she was abusing that acquaintanceship.

And, with pinpoint sensitivity for the moment, her phone rings. It's Agent Feynman from the DXDO.
" How are things, Adeleth?"

Cursing under her breath, Adeleth smiles and answers the phone. "Feynman, I was just thinking about you."

As she speaks, she gets up and pulls her travel bag out of the back of her closet and opens it, double checking that everything she needs is inside.

"I'm guessing this isn't a social call."

Amy

It had been a year since she had fallen in with the DXDO. A year since the kidnapping, being rescued, almost loosing her friend to a freaking space snake and gaining the attention of some rather unsavoury Sith. Not exactly fun times that. Now, she was in Germany, trying to find a Fire type pokemon and getting into trouble.

Not an unusual situation for her really....

Adeleth

" Unfortunately, no", Feynman says. " How's your German? We need someone for a little inter-agency exchange."

Amy

Just when you least expect it....

Her phone rings. It's an unknown number.

The girl hit the deck, or rather hid behind a rather large boulder in a desperate attempt to dodge the attentions of a rather irate Mightyena. "Hey, I said I was sorry!" she said as he let loose with a powerful Dark Pulse. "Would you stop that!?"

Sorry wasn't cutting it apparently.

"Hi, a little busy here," she said as she put the phone on speaker. "Peekaboo, Thunder! on the Mightyena! Ren, Lightscreen!"

" Well, with some creative effort, what you are busy with could be described as poaching. But that's neither here nor there, right? My name is Hagen and I work for the Ministry of Extraordinary Affairs. Mint-fresh, we are. And we need you."

The beginning of the lunchtime period found Lilly Lullabye sat on a ragged blanket at the foot of the statue of Alfred Krupp that stood outside the Marktkirche on Kennedyplatz in the centre of Essen. On the step in front of her a battered tin can sat on a dirty shopping bag.

She watched the passing pedestrians with a quiet smile, ignoring any hostile glances that were directed her way. The peace, quiet and plenty of the Earth still had novelty value for her, and it would take far more than glares to dent her mood.

When she judged the ebb and flow of the passers-by to be right, she took a deep breath, opened her mouth, and began to sing. An acapella song of sadness and desperation, sung to every passer-by in their own native language, catching their attention and holding it as the song moved from sadness and depression into hope and new life, ending in inspiration for a new and better tomorrow. She followed this with other songs, some more filled with sadness and crushing desperation, others with happiness and new life. Some of fear and pursuit, tempered by the relief of escape. Until, after an hour, she finished with a song very similar to the one she began with, and silence fell over Kennedyplatz.

Silence broken by applause as the entranced crowd began to move on, but not before handing Lilly enough Euros to fill her can several times over. With a brief smile she stood, gathered her ragged blanket and can of cash, emptying the money into her shopping bag. Keeping close to the walls of the buildings, she began to edge cautiously away southwards towards another decent busking location, on the Willy-Brandt-Platz, outside Essen railway station.

Lilly

Halfway on her way there, a young blonde woman, her hair bound into a tight ponytail, her suit completing the formal, stern look, stepped close to her. " Frau...Lulla...bye? Do you have a moment?"

"My grandmother taught me German as a little girl," Adeleth says in German before switching back to English. "I learned it before I learned English. Why? Something happening in Germany?"

//Currently it's mid-October, 2019

" Sort of. Seems they're trying to set up something similar to the DXDO after trying for four years to ignore the problem. And they need some people to show them how it's done. Agents with some field experience. I happen to know the guy they put in charge."

"It would be if I wasn't smart enough to get the permits and paperwork squared away." she said cheerfully as she and her creatures finally drove off the last of the small pack of Mightyena and Poochyena. "This isn't my first rodeo you know and it's one of the first things they teach you in Pokemon school." she said as she recalled her pokemon and headed back to the small village to collect her pay for teaching the local wild pokemon manners. It was an ongoing problem everywhere. "So aside from the minor scolding, what do you need me for?" she asked wryly in German. "In a group, I tend to act as a healer, sweeper and or translator."

"I am Lilly Lullabye, yes," she replied quietly, stepping nervously away from and glancing behind the woman to pick out a rooftop in case a quick exit was needed, then looking back at her. "Who are you? What do you want?"

" To be honest? We need people who know the ins and outs of the supernatural world. I have my sources, I know my stuff but I am just one guy. And getting anything approved by the higher-ups is hell." He pauses for a moment, then adds, " You would get paid, of course."

Lilly

" Would you not rather live without having to rely on the generosity of strangers? Even if you're using your powers?", the woman asks. " I'm from the Ministry of Extranormal Affairs - Ministerium für Übernatürliches. And we have a job offer for you."
