while I normally have no problems with the whole "Women Empowerment" bit going on lately(I like to think of it all as Cycle-like),I draw the line at turning 90/99.9% of The DC Male Hero/Villian population into background noise/"damsel's in distress"(I have a kid who'll watch anything remotely super-heroish)....

As Batgirl said, once they were as advanced as any Western nation, despite appearing to be a typical third-world African nation, with their edges coming from the Vibranium metal deposits and their advanced knowledge of alternative medicine (the Panther's powers came from training but also an herbal concoction). Nowadays it's a fantasy kingdom with technology more advanced than nearly anywhere else on Marvel Earth. I'm not sure if this was entirely a Reginald Hudson development, but regardless it's the new status quo for the Black Panther's home nation. I do wonder how the upcoming movie will affect the comic book depiction.

All my best.
The way some writers have treated BP in recent years is quite frankly ridiculous and has only had a detrimental effect on his characterization. He for whatever reasons now has to shown to be superior to everyone at everything. He's suddenly the greatest warrior, leader, scientist and expert on mysticism alive and as you've said his tiny secretive nation in the middle of Africa is somehow the most technologically advanced on the planet to such an extent that no other nation stands a chance against it

Yeah, Wakanda has varied quite a bit. T'Challa was supposed to be a genius, even in the '70s, but he's become way more of an arrogant zealot over the years, at the same time as Wakanda has turned into a Mary Suetopia, largely fueled by Reggie Hudlin's wishful thinking.

I don't see the guys as jobbing that much; typically you'll just see them as background nothings. Hal Jordan gets a few lines, as does the Flash.

I'm more impressed that it's a Mattel-based girl-focused show that spends almost zero amount of time on fashion. The most you get is stuff in Professor Crazy Quilt's class, and he's arguably the most minor of the teachers.

I don't mind the idea of Wakanda being a major technological powerhouse. The idea is more or less that the Panther is an African Batman, only with the resources of a small country. The idea with someone with that kind of genius and authority could turn that country into one of the wealthiest and most advanced places on Earth never bothered me. If anything, I felt that the issue was that they should have portrayed Wakanda as a more modern African city, rather than the kind of third world/mud huts kind of place.

My issue came when Christopher Priest and Reggie Huldin turned Wakanda from the Panther's sort of "good guy version of Latveria" into this place that had much, much better technology than even Tony Stark, and that it had things like the CURE FOR CANCER that they refused to share with the rest of the world. It turned Wakanda from an advanced people to a secretive group of black supremacists. It got worse with the introduction of T'Challa's sister, who happily indulged in things like genocide.

I kind of got a similar but not as extreme vibe from the MCU Wakandans during Civil War. T'Challa's dad went on international television complaining about a lack of accountability for Wanda, when her actions flat out limited the civilian casualties to an absolute minimum. I seriously wanted to go "What, it would have been better if she had just let the guy blow up on the ground and take out even more people in a populated area? Oh right, right, there were no Wakandans in the square at the time, so it wouldn't have been your problem."

I disagree here. Sally Floyd should be a PL -1.

Yeah, they were pretty selective in their supremacist ideals- they actually viewed OTHER blacks with disgust and derision, having faced down many rival tribes over the generations.

* I did manage to see the first big SuperHero Girls special- it was pretty fun. Looks like Mattel's going for the usual "Three-minute Webisodes/Hourlong Movie" format, like with their other doll lines. But of course this one is more-current to comic fans's interests. It's fairly "kiddie", but the nods to actual continuity are pretty funny, considering the target audience:

* Supergirl's second school of choice after "Super Hero High" was Korugar Academy. Supergirl herself is doing the "nervous new student" thing, unskilled with her powers, and looking up to Wonder Woman specifically.

* Barbara Gordon is a nerdy type who builds tons of gadgets and does computer stuff, but becomes Batgirl by the end. Hilariously, even THIS show is riffing on the "Christian Bale Batman Voice" when she starts doing that, then coughs and apologizes for the "frog in my throat". FRIGGIN' KIDS CARTOONS ARE DOING THIS MEME YOU GUYS.

* Ma & Pa Kent are played by Helen Slater and Dean Cain, which is funny. Also, they get like two lines each. Well, I guess the actors weren't busy.

* Wonder Woman is Grey "Azula" DeLisle, Batgirl is Mae "Tinker Bell/Katara" Whitman, and Harley Quinn is Tara Strong. That's some quality in the cast, right there. Oddly, very little of the Monster High/Ever After High cast is used. I'm guessing DC threw down a higher budget.

* Beast Boy is the primary male student seen, and uses his standard cartoon VA. The only other male students you usually see are The Flash & Green Lantern. Superman is mentioned as an adult. We never see Batman at all, nor is he implied (Batgirl gets the name when she goes on about how bats can surpass their limitations just like Supergirl should).

* I'm pretty sure the Chinese student is supposed to be Lady Shiva (*does research*- yup). Even though she uses her giant ponytail (long-haired dolls sell REALLY WELL, you see) as a weapon in fights. And loses to Stompa, where Poison Ivy wins.

* Granny Goodness now has a Minnesota accent. Also, the faculty includes John DiMaggio playing PE Teacher Wildcat and Vice Principal Grodd.

-Naturally, Wonder Woman, being the most famous female superhero by an exponential margin over whomever #2 is (Supergirl? Batgirl?), is the main character of DC Superhero Girls. She's your pretty standard Main Character in these things, lacking the great torment of Apple & Raven in Ever After High, but acting more like a Generally-Friendly Girl, albeit a MUCH more serious student than your typical lead star. The early episodes see her fumble and fail a lot, usually due to outside circumstances (like Cheetah interfering in her studies), but she ends up being the school's all-star. A lot of the early goings deal with her and her roommate, the jovial, insane Harley Quinn, who is prone to goofing off and partying while hyper-studios Diana isn't in the mood for shenanigans.

-Power-wise, WW isn't nearly as powerful as she is in the comics, but seems to be Super Hero High's most powerful character by a ways. She's actually a bit like 1980s-era Donna Troy in a way, using vague mid-tier Super-Strength combined with Flight to lead the charge. In one of the first Season 2 Webisodes, she more or less one-shots Giganta by tying her up and tipping her over. And yes, she uses a Shield for most of her power-based stuff- you'd wonder why, until you go down the toy aisle at your local store and see scads of "Wonder Woman Shields" for sale, scaled to "Little Girl Size". Easier to market a big, colorful disc than some bracelets.

My Young Wards have been on a big Monster High/Ever After High kick lately. With the youngest of them explicitly requesting MH dolls for Christmakkuh this year... I was a little wary, given the dolls expense and massive piles of tiny little accessories. I love the kid, but she's not very good at keeping track of those little bits and bobs... But I found that Mattel makes a "basic" version of Dracu-Laura and Frankie for about a third of the price as the standard dolls. It's just the doll and doesn't have the pile of accessories. So I snagged those for putting under the Batcave's tree.

But then I found out that Mattel makes a similar set of "basic" dolls for DC's Super Hero Girl lineup: Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and... Wait for it... Batgirl!!!

Yeah, I'm brainwashing my kids to be superhero-loving dorks. I don't deny it.

I just wish they'd release a damn Katana doll- that San Diego Comic Con exclusive one is INSANE:

Instead, I see that most of the group is popular up here... except for poor Bumblebee. The mandatory "Black doll" is currently warming shelves up here in Canada. I'm not sure about the rest of you- it's too bad, too, because she's got probably the most well-designed look. The others are just "Cheaper version of the comic book design". The rest of the cast seems to have exploded in popularity over Christmas, as going to the toy store now reveals a huge swath has been torn through the SuperHero Girls section. In my region anyways, it looks like those have turned into a hit.

Considering that the two of them play Kara's adoptive parents on CW's Supergirl, it was probably just a case of having them read a couple of lines while they were around. And, to be honest, its a nice little continuity connect. :D

The CW!DC 'verse has lots of great "casting gags" using actors who previously played big(ish) roles in adaptations of the characters as supporting cast members of the new show: Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and Helen Slater (Supergirl) as the adoptive parents of Supergirl; Laura Vanderhoweveryouspellhername (Smallville's Supergirl) as Brainiac/Indigo beating up Supergirl; John Shipp (start of the shortlived 1997 The Flash series) as Barry Allen's dad...

It's ingenious really.

Skills:

Advantages:

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +4, Fortitude +6, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Doing Good For Herself)- Cheetah is self-obsessed and prone to cutting down others to make herself look better. Or just for shits and giggles.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 13 (123)

-Cheetah, given the identity of one of Wonder Woman's only recurring villains with much staying power, essentially takes on an identical role to that of Toralei in Monster High- the Mean Girl without many redeeming qualities. Cheetah is seen being... oh god... a "Cheat-ah", sabotaging Wonder Woman's attempts at scoring high on various "Hero Tests". She actually gets away with it, too, until later when the Lasso of Truth gets her to spill the beans over everything she's done till then. Later, we see her suffering humiliation after trying to make like El Hombre by inventing some serious crimes (a la Astro City) and look like a big hero... her first attempt is foiled by Harley Quinn's hilariously bad acting as the "stick-up artist", while the next goes awry when the giant robot she built (??) goes wild because she dropped the remote control.

-Cheetah is a PL 8 Speedster/Scrapper archetype who's shown outrunning the FLASH at one point, so you know she's good.

I love the concept of Superhero Girls. Find it hilarious that they also put villains into the concept as "heroes."
