Lucas Wright aka Wild Card
PL 7
135 pp

Background

Lucas wasn't born rich, handsome, and a world class gambler. It took years of luck, skill, and being a lucky guy to be in his current position. The tale starts in the East End of London with a poor mother and father who desperately wanted a child. They worked hard and did the best they could, but the mother died at Lucas's birth and the father died in the bottom of a bottle not long after Lucas was born. His only real influence was the card playing kids in the orphanage he got put after his fathers death. No one else gave him the time of day. Back in those days, the stakes weren't the multimillion dollar pots he routinely plays for now. It was chores. Still, he found he had a gift not for cards, but reading peoples reactions when playing cards. His whole time at the orphanage he never did a chore.

He also found he had another gift that wasn't so common. If he tried, objects he held would charge as if they were going to explode and his punches had a little more force behind them. Afraid of being called a freak or becoming a science experiment, he kept it secret and never used it. Instead, he developed a fighting style to protect himself and some of the smaller kids from the more vicious kids in the orphanage. Compared to the bullies he was pretty good, but the bullies always just moved on to easier targets and Lucas was still just a kid.

When the time came to leave the orphanage due to his age, he made the only choice that made sense to an average intelligence kid with only street skills and a sparkling personality to his name. He joined the army. It was like nothing he was expecting, but quickly managed to convince a sympathetic officer to pull some strings for him to get into the SAS in exchange for forgiving some gambling debts. Being in an elite special forces was the perfect venue, Lucas reasoned, to help people. Plus, if it didn't work out he would be highly trained. Three years after his training finished, he was shipped off to fight in the Falkland wars where he learned first hand what the hell of war was like and the rampant corruption of those with power. After the war, he wanted nothing to do with fighting for a big heartless country who would accept innocents being hurt as collateral damage. So, he convinced a high ranking officer to give him a discharge.

This is where the Lucas of today was born. Jobless, homeless, and with his only training as a killer he decided to try and make some money in cards. It wasn't too long before he moved form the back rooms of London to the big casinos of Macau and the French Riviera. A few of the lower capitalized casinos viewed him as a liability, so they banned him. A gambler of his caliber is never without a game invitation though and eventually he got an invite for a high stakes game in Heaven. Having never heard of Heaven, he thought it was a joke until he realized the big name CEOs who were also in the game. It was going to be like taking candy from a baby.

Everything went as he expected in the game. After playing for almost 10 hours straight he had made a tidy sum of 500,000 dollars. He would have won more if not for the host of the game calling it out spite for losing almost a million dollars to the other players. Tired and a little drunk, Lucas stumbled out of the warehouse to try and find his motorcycle. Around the corner form where he parked his bike, he saw three police officers over two naked women starting to undo their belts. Even in his less than optimal state for fighting he had to help the two women. As expected, it didn't go so well for him and he ended up being on the receiving end of a few punches. He was holding his own, but wasn't going to be able to for much longer until Osprey bailed him out.

That was the birth of a beautiful friendship. Lucas saw a chance to be a hero and use a gift he had been rejecting for good in the role of a hero. Osprey saw a rich and skilled ally. Over the years, Lucas kept up his globe trotting gambling ways, but kept a luxury apartment in Heaven. A few times a year he would visit the city and help Osprey from time to time or just play in more high stakes games that always went on among the elite of the city. Sometimes he just played in games for fun with Osprey, as a normal person, and a few others. In one game, Osprey ran out of money and Lucas won a favor from his friend. The favor happened to be the number for whoever was proving Osprey with all his gear. Never being one for technology, it was easier just to pay Osprey's support to enhance his bike and set him up with more technological equipment.

Upon Osprey's death, Lucas decided to make Heaven his year round home. Globe trotting was fun, but he wanted to give back and help people more than just occasionally. Due to the death of Osprey, he also inherited a ward of sorts that he was implored to take care of by Osprey and being at a different city every month wouldn't really be watching over his new charge. Of course, Lucas wasn't stupid so he waited for a couple months before establishing his new hero persona of Wild Card and head quarters out of a warehouse that had long since been forgotten.

Personality

Lucas is an easy going guy who believes in human interaction over new fangled technology. While he isn't an luddite, he just prefers good old fashioned methods. To this end, he isn't very technologically savvy. In person, he comes across as a good natured person except at the card table where he makes his living. While playing, he is as tough and manipulative as they come. He is also always on the look out for cheaters because he refuses to lose to people who don't play fair. This sense also carries over to his alternate persona as Wild Card when it comes to his harsh punishment of those who take advantage of the innocent.

Hero Appearance
In costume, he is dressed as a court jester with a false face he created himself. He even has a set of contacts to not give away his eye color.

Andy Harker
PL 9
PP 135

Age 28

Image

Background

Andy grew up in the rough part of New York. His mum Angela was a nurse and dad Ryan a degenerate gambler that got lucky to marry an angel. While his mum made decent money as a nurse, it mostly went to fund his dads gambling habits or pay off his debts. His mum also volunteered her time at free clinics for the local homeless. This meant Andy usually was either on the street playing with the other kids or stuck at the clinic helping out as needed because his dad was at some card table or off the track betting place. At the clinic, he learned many of the basics that would serve him well in his future career as an EMT.

At the age of 14, Andy's mum had a brain aneurism leaving it as just Andy and his dad. The loss of his mums income meant his dad would come home night after night with bruises from people who demanded to be repaid. Andy would need to tend to his dad at least once a week. To get the money lenders off his dads back, Andy made a deal with a local crime boss Marcus Luciano. Andy would patch up Marcus's people if he kept the lenders away from Andy's dad. It was a deal that held four years until cancer took Marcus. With no protection, one of the lenders finally killed Andy's dad. Despite being a hopelessly addicted gambler, Ryan loved his son so took precautions to keep his son off any lenders radars. It was Francis, Marcus's son, who went after Andy.

Francis had no standing with the former gang, so they didn't back him up. If Francis wanted Andy, he'd need to do it himself. The gang owed Andy that much at least for all the bullet and stab wounds he helped patch up. An 18 year old kid with no money and average intelligence or formal medical training didn't have many choices for where to run. So, he enlisted into the army to get away from Francis.

In the army, Andy learned how to fight and when his medical talent became evident he was trained as a combat medic. During the first year of his term of service, he was hazed by the more alpha males. In the field in the middle east, after basic training and a stint at Fort Bragg, they stopped hazing the guy who kept them going when the fighting got rough. His remaining three years of service saw his unit in less hostile places like Korea and Germany. Unlike some of the people coming back from the various battle fields, he wasn't shaken since he was doing what he was accustomed. Not that he would tell anyone, but gun shots, stabbings, and explosive wounds were not new to him.

After his four years were up, he knew he couldn't go back to New York. Instead, he settled on the opposite coast in L.A and took up a job as an EMT. Inspired by the memory of his mum, Andy found a free clinic based out of Saint Vincents church which needed volunteers. Being just an EMT didn't quite satisfy him the first two years back in the states. He met Katie for the first time during one shift. She was a beautiful red head Irish woman in her early 30's that was going over the clinic and being introduced as the new administrator. Andy fell in love at first sight. She was a nun though, so he tried to suppress it despite getting the occasional playful smile and laugh back from her.

Andy also gave out his contact info to the homeless just in case they really needed help. The homeless in Hollywood and L.A started calling him for all sorts of emergencies. One day, while working a volunteer shift Katie called Andy into her office. What started out as a probe of what Andy was doing on the side to help the homeless turned into a make out session. Over the next two years, Katie and Andy started seeing each other more with Katie having broken her vows to God more than a couple times. They both agreed though to keep it quiet because she wouldn't be able to run the clinic anymore.

Some bigger car repair bills were coming due, so Andy started looking for a side hustle to make ends meet. He got paid in advance to work as an onsite medic for the relaunch of Palladium studios with their massive hiring day. It was enough to settle the bill for his car and might even turn into something more with the newly reopened studio.

Total:
Abilities 40 + Skills 23 + Advantages 12 + Powers 56 + Defenses 8 coming to 135

Equipment:

Complications:
Motivation(Responsibility): He wants to help as many people as he can like his mum did. He does this knowing full well the target painted on his back because of his powers.
Responsibility(Homeless): He volunteers his time at a free clinic for the homeless based out of Saint Vincent church. he also helps the homeless off the books by making "house" calls.
Secret(Former criminal medic): Andy used to help patch up criminals back in New York to help pay off his dads gambling debts.
Relationship(Katie Smith): He is secretly dating a nun who helps run Saint Vincent Clinic. They keep it private so she can still run the clinic.
Enemy(Francis Luciano): Francis is the son of the crime boss Andy used to work. He blames Andy for not helping his father more despite nothing able to be done.
Fame(Cult Following): Once he starts healing, there is a subsegment of society that will be drawn to him or the idea of him if they don't know who is exactly as if he was the second coming or at least a prophet. This is especially true when he brings back someone declared dead which he will eventually try to do.

Personality

Andy views it as his responsibility to help the less fortunate. He finds it hard to turn anyone away from medical help if they need it. He knows full well that having healing powers will make him a prime target for anyone in need of healing, so he doesn't advertise them. He also has been brought up by the street so knows when to hide, whats generally going on, and keeping any eye out for any trouble. Deep down, he is a big soft with a heart of gold who just wants to heal the world.

Notes

His main power array is derived from channeling his life force into something offensive if needed and rejuvenating others life force. He also is able to detect the state of others life force around him plus the general details of its status. For example, he can tell if a person is sick, healthy on the verge of death, etc. This does not include details like 3 bruises, a broken leg, etc. It only means he knows the person is injured in some way even if visibly there is no sign of it.

Conner Flanigan
PL 8
120 pp

Image
*Source is a publicity still for the movie

Background

All of Conners great grand parents came to New York from Ireland with his great grand fathers becoming cops. His grand parents followed suit branding into different specialties like detective or sergeants. His parents followed suit and actually met when his mum, a criminal profiler, and dad, a SWAT demolition officer, were working a bombing case together. Conners two sisters were exceptionally bright and were on the fast track to detective and sniper respectively. Compared to them, Conner was normal. He tried to keep pace with them, but he just wasn't the smartest, most intuitive, fit, etc. He found refuge in not measuring up with taking care of animals and volunteering at shelters. Despite his own thoughts, Conner's family never did anything to try and make him feel inferior.

His older sisters were eager to prove they were ready. On a bank robbery job during their first year out of the academy, they were fatally wounded when the robbers blew up a car they were using as cover. Conner and his parents were devastated. Grief is funny in that it looks different for different people. What his parents meant as sadness for the loss of two children, Conner took as disappointment that he wasn't killed instead. His mum caught this and tried to reassure him, but he just resolved to work harder to be the best cop he could be.

He moved out of New York down to Houston for a fresh start, but word spreads and he was given a few passes in the police academy. They figured he'd be good in the K9 units. Out on his first patrol was Ralph, his assigned police dog, they were checking out a scene with suspected drugs. Much to Conners surprise, it was the lab of Dr. Faust who was going through homeless for test subjects to his formula like they were rubbish. Faust knocked Conner out and managed to escape from the search area to a fall back lab. Using the last of his formula, Faust injected Conner. Conner survived, but was changed. Dr. Faust was ecstatic. This was when Ralph burst through a window and SWAT swarmed the lab. Before an explosion rocked the lab destroying all of Dr. Fausts research, Conner felt himself pulled out by Ralph who he could swear was saying "Hurry! Go!".

When he came to at the hospital, he had a wet tongue on his face and could swear again he heard a voice saying "You're up! You're up!" in the way a two year old would speak. The cop at the door and officer at his bed side pulled Ralph away. Conner could swear he heard Ralph pleading. During testing, genetic anomalies turned up and during standard testing for powers they found he was faster, stronger, and had a connection to animals.

Someone of his new found talents drew the attention of SWAT who put him through intensive training he aced, with the aid of a few rats who lived at the training facility. By the time he was done with the six week course he was one of the best, by virtue of his powers and drive to prove to his family he was worthy. He also ended up with three German Shepards retired from the force and a cute stray poodle who happened by the training facility every day.

Motivation(Protect and Serve): He is dedicated to having justice served in the right way just as it had been instilled in him since birth. It was reinforced when his sisters gave their lives in the line of duty.
Prejudice(Talks to Animals): While to most it's a fun tease "Dr. Doolittle" or something, to others its viewed as just crazy.
Enemy(Dr Faust): Dr. Faust is in prison, but thinks he owns Conner now that his formula gave Conner powers.
Obsession(Animals): Conner always felt a kinship with animals. Now he can connect with them, he is more obsessed with protecting them.

Personality

Conner has a strong sense of duty to the job and a tendency to try and prove himself that he is worthy when compared to his sisters who died in a bank robbery. Despite that, he is sometimes a wonky bloke who will joke with the best of them. In addition, he has a strong bond with most animals and can't bear to see them suffer. He has three German Shepards and a poodle of his own at home, but also fosters from time to time. He treats animals as good as people, not as disposable like some do. They are equal partners in his eyes.

"Cool" Luke Barnes
PL 10
150pp
Age: 30

Image
Source from movie promotion

Background:

Mary Barnes was a super hero super fan who worked a low wage job at a Freedom City bar. One day, one of the heroes she idolized came into the bar for a pint. Pretty soon, he lured her into the bathroom and Luke was conceived. She never saw the super again. From the age of two, Luke was talking and by three he was trying to convince his mum to get him all sorts of toys or negotiating bed times. By four, his mum was at her wits end. Not at his talking, but the pressures of being a young single mum with no career prospects. So, she did what she thought was best for little Luke and dropped him near a police station telling him to give the desk sergeant a note. She never came back. The note simply asked to watch over her son while she looks into a super villain. Not that Luke remembers any of this or really cares anymore.

Linda Murphy, Chelsea Johal, Max Franks, and Jake Lau are his family. His guardians, if they could be called that, did the bare minimum to turn a profit on the support provided by the state to foster five kids. When Luke was put into their home, he made fast friends of Jake first and then the others. In elementary school, Luke used his gift for words to get out of all sorts of trouble playing on the sympathy afforded foster kids or any other card he could pull. If his siblings or him lacked clothing, he'd raid the lost and found convincing the school to give it to him. His foster parents didn't care. One less expense. First choice of school lunches other kids had was also his because of various favours either he or his siblings traded.

Luke came into his powers around the same time Jake did at 13. While Max was helping at the local church, Chelsea had her nose in a science book, and Linda was volunteering Fire and Ice were having fun with their new powers. At the time, they thought calling themselves Fire and Ice on account of Jakes fire powers and Lukes ice powers was pretty cool. Not cheesy at all. Again, Lukes gift for words got them out of more than a few scraps with the law. Nothing they did went further than pranks, but when pranks involved powers it registered on the radar of local law enforcement. Luke helped smooth it all out before it got to the report writing phase.

Entering adulthood, the siblings stayed close. Linda went off and got married having two kids. Max was never going to have kids because he became a priest. Chelsea was too involved in lab work on some new break through therapeutic for any serious relationships. Jake and Luke, Fire and Ice, kept the closest. Over the years, they'd all write or call each other with the three more responsible siblings constantly reminding Jake and Luke about the responsibility that went along with their powers. Neither cared too much. Luke could sweet talk anyone into anything and Jake was a brilliant scrapper. The world was theirs.

Every night was a party and they were never at a loss for lodging. Luke made friends with everyone from city councilmen, feds, and some criminal families. Jake sometimes went into the illegal territory, but never too far. Luke stayed on the legal side, but not always moral. During his time playing people, Luke helped the mob with some bagman work. Strictly being the courier and never asking more than who to deliver it. Some cops also came to him for info on various going ons at the street level plus help with the small time super villain. When Luke went off to "talk" the small time villains out of messing up the city as a favour to the cops, Jake would just laugh it off knowing full well the favour was to help him. Linda, Chelsea, and Max knew it was to help Jake, but reminded Luke he was a good person without needing to help Jake or the other siblings out as a reason.

When the invasion started, Luke and Jake were partying up in New Orleans staying at a flat belonging to some Irish twin sisters straight out of a Victoria Secret ad. The topic came up to have a party, so the sisters and Fire and Ice trolled the bars finding two other girls. Luke did his thing smiling just the right way, saying just enough compliments, and pulling back at just the right time to pique the girls interest into going back to the flat for "drinks".

Explosions rocked the street outside the bar as they left drinks in hand. A dozen armoured aliens rifles in hands started blasting the street. A taxed Aegis unit in power suits came up behind the aliens, but previous battles had worn the unit down. Jake and Luke knew the Aegis unit wasn't going to last. The girls had already ran. Jake didn't hesitate, he went straight for the nearest bank vault that had a gaping hole in it. Luke stopped. Responsibility. You are good. All the things his siblings had told him in calls and letters repeated themselves in his head. Instead of going with Jake, Luke created a thick wall of ice between the aliens and Aegis unit. Relief ran over the Aegis unit faces. Unbeknownst to Luke, the power cells in the suits were running low and needed time to recharge. Luke made walls as quick as he could. Wall after all fell to the onslaught of the rifles. It was enough time for the unit to power up just enough.

Between Lukes blasts of ice and the Aegis units assault, the aliens went down. Afterward, when the action in the area had died down, Mallory, Bernard, and Jose survived mostly unscathed. There was times Luke thought he would die. New Orleans was saved. The surviving Aegis members couldn't thank Luke enough for his help, but Luke would hear nothing of it.

Over the next few weeks, word spread among Aegis units in the gulf coast about Luke and his phone would get a ring for back up on some op unofficially. Luke would help if he was close by and after a few weeks every time at the urging of Max. Jake helped as well, even getting a pardon, but his heart wasn't in it. With fewer heroes and dwindling agents, Jake got the pardon and did the work solely to wipe out some pending charges. After the dust of the battles had settled, Jake jumped right back into a life of crime for the thrill of it.

One night, while chatting up three college girls coming to New Orleans for a good time, Jose joined the group looking serious. It broke the spell Luke was casting when Jose flashed his badge. It was official business. Jose had been told to extend Luke a proper job offer. At first, Luke said no. That was when Jose pulled out his phone and dialed Chelsea. She was consulting for the science division of Aegis. She told him to sign up. Still Luke said it wasn't for him. Chelsea played dirty and brought Max and Linda into the call. With two screaming kids in the background, Luke relented. He was already helping the crippled Aegis out as a civilian, might as well get paid something for it.

Abilities 48 + Skills 19 + Advantages 13 + Powers 63 + Defenses 7 = 150

Equipment
Armored Uniform (Protection 2), Blaster Pistol (Ranged Damage 5), Commlink, Handcuffs

Complications

Motivation(Doing Good): Luke has always been not bad or good really. He's just sort of been Luke. The alien invasion and taste of being a hero changed all that. Encouragement from his chosen family helped as well.
Rival("Firey" Jake Lau): Jake and Luke were best mates for a while until Luke decided to become good and Jake broke bad. While not enemies, there is a rivalry now and each tries to get the other to change.
Enemies(Former business associates): Luke is still well liked, but some of the elements he used to deal don't take kindly to him joining up with Aegis.
Relationship(Foster Siblings): Lukes siblings in his foster home are near and dear to him. They kept him from going full con artist getting him to help law enforcement from time to time. Now, they intend to keep him on the up and up.
Addiction(The Game): No doubt, Lukes a good talker. It's a daily struggle for him not to play it up like he used to do for fun now that he works for Aegis.

Personality

Luke, generally known as Cool Luke, can talk an eskimo into buying ice in the middle of a snow storm. He once did for fun as well. Behind all his smooth talk and manipulation is a deep seated desire to do good. It's what held him back from being a better liar. He's just now admitting it to himself that he wants to be good, but the lure of sweet talking his way into things and "social hacking" if you will still pulls at him. No one can say though he is a bad guy. Everyone would admit, he's the sort you would go have a beer with and end up staying until the bar closes bsing. The jury is still out if he can truly be good.

Family

Linda Murphy: Stay at home mother to two young children and active in the Pittsburgh community.
Chelsea Johal: Cancer researcher who made a major chemo break through and now consults for Aegis on treatments for agents who took ill during the war with the aliens. based out of Jacksonville.
Max Franks: Priest based out of Saint Mathhews parish in Miami.
Jake Lau: Closest step sibling who is also a fire controller. Unlike Luke, he started using his powers for personal gain. He is a mid level criminal, but doesn't go too far. so he is high on Aegis's list.

Craze
PL 7
PP 105

Image

Personality

Craze is a raven proper mixed with mythological properties of one. As such, he has the standard obsession with shiny objects and enjoys digging into carrion. The normal talent Ravens possess for vocal mimicry is enhanced to the point his vocal coords can mimic any sound to a degree. On top of that, knowing he'd need a voice, the Shaper added some extra gifts for language. So, while he may not be able to read or write, his mind can process any sound that resembles a language and speak in a tone that comes across as the listeners native tongue.

He was made for the purposes of communication, but a side benefit of that is he serves as a useful decoy. The later usefulness is also a side effect of his playfulness. Still young, he has no idea of the Shapers true intent for him. He will follow the Shaper through hell and back, but will still try to have a bit of fun while doing it.

Cody Jones
PL 10
PP 155

Image

Age 28

Background

Cody grew up in his early years simple enough in New York City back in the 1920's. His parents ran a prosperous catering business with clientele from normal people to the ultra rich. In his early youth, he'd read about pulp heroes doing fantastic things and hear his parents talk about gangsters bootlegging. For Cody, it all seemed so exciting and he longed for that kind of excitement plus doing good like the heroes he read. With the other kids, he would play action hero vs gangster or noble gangster vs rogue cops. By all accounts, he was a well rounded kid with a stable home.

In fifth grade, his grades took a marked improvement. He was always a B student no mater how hard he tried. Suddenly, he was getting everything right and becoming the top student in his class. At first his teachers thought he was cheating, but it became clear he wasn't. When they asked his parents, Cody's parents didn't have a clue since high intelligence didn't run in either families line. Professors who taught high level theoretical math were bought in and Cody was able to converse with them like a peer. Some of the sharpest minds quizzed him and he aced all the questions. Normal school just wasn't cutting it for him. So, his parents found a boarding school for gifted students. When the evaluator showed up, it took all of 10 minutes for him to offer Cody a full ride scholarship to the upstate New York school.

At the school, Cody's eyes were opened up to a world he had only read about in pulp magazines. People with powers did exist and he was one of them. The school administrators promised to teach him to harness his gifts for the betterment of mankind. Other students also exhibited gifts such as telekinesis, limited teleportation, enhanced strength, and things of the like. Cody's gifts were discovered to be an increased mental processing ability and mental powers. Combined with having a magnetic personality, the school tailored his curriculum on enhancing his mental aptitude's plus personable skills. Soon, he was one of the most popular kids in school, helped by his ability to intuitively understand people. Peter Floyd, a student with the ability to mind jump, flaunted his power and pushed other kids around. One day, Cody got tired of it and exposed that Peter was still a bed wetter. From then on, the other kids just weren't intimidated by him.

Come graduation day, his class mates were abuzz. It was the post graduation day trip coming up before returning to their parents. The previous year was Cuba and this year was going to be Hollywood. They'd get to fly in a private plane and everything with full catering. Previous students who had come back to the school to speak raved about their trips and the exotic locales they'd visited. After graduation and kissing their parents good bye, the students boarded the plane. It was the last time anyone who speak to the class of 100 students for a long time.

On the plane, stewardesses brought drinks around before take off and naturally all the students toasted. After they all quickly fell asleep, men in white lab coats went through the plane injecting students with Compound P. It was a new serum meant to enhance someones natural powers and make them loyal soldiers. Previous versions of the serum focused on the loyalty, but version P was meant to enhance power as well. It took a week or so to mix in the students systems, just long enough to have visited "Hollywood". Memories would be implanted later. When the sleeping students arrived at the underground hibernation pods in a secret compound in the Catskills mountains that only a few in The Horde, the secret backers of the school, knew about they were put into hibernation while the serum did it's thing.

During the week the students were gestating, a band of masked heroes followed by the government raided the school. Those who knew of the Catskills compound all died in the assault or fled never to be seen or heard from again. It was all over the news of a secret Horde school and the group of 100 missing students. Former students were revealed to be part of various Horde plots around the world and rounded up with the intention of reprogramming them. For the parents of the 100 missing students, they died not knowing what happen to their children.

Nine years before the invasion, hikers were hiking in the Catskills and came across a strange door. Time had weakened it to the point of them having no problem getting it open. Inside they found 100 hibernation pods of mostly old men and women with some of them dead. A few pods had younger people or not so aged ones. When Aegis and the government arrived on the scene, it was quickly recognized they were the 100 students who fell prey to faulty pods. 15 had died of old age and the serum having negative effects. 60 were alive, but aged to the point of any powers they might have had diminished greatly. 25 were found to either be still powerful or younger. Cody and Jumper stood out amongst the 25. Jumper's powers were stronger than ever and he immediately jumped into other bodies to escape Aegis. Cody was also stronger than ever plus youthful to boot.

The 60 who were no threats were taken care of in a home under the watchful eye of Aegis who ensured they weren't a future Horde threat. For the other 24, they were brought to a camp with each monitored and tested. Most exhibited minor powers, but not boosted much due to a combination of age and ineffective pods plus serum combination. They displayed a loyalty to The Horde when questioned. So, Aegis kept an eye on them and brought in counselors plus others to try and break the hold.

Cody was the only one who didn't show any loyalty to The Horde. In fact, he was shocked it hadn't registered before to him. School guards around the area were robots sort of similar to what the Horde used. A lot of the "good" he was taught centered on manipulation of people and finding out what made them tick utilizing his powers under the premise of talking down criminals or infiltration. Other students had learned combat or infiltration skills as well as it befit their powers. Games were in hindsight clearly constructed to model situations they might engage with heroes or adversaries with all the fall out from the engagements. This all rushed to Cody quite quickly. He felt his mind working much faster than it ever had. Counselors brought in told him that there was something in his blood that had enhanced his natural mutation to the point of unlocking much more of his minds potential. Based on their thoughts, they hadn't a clue what it was.

Over the course of the next year, Cody trained on the usage of his new powers and worked to convince the Aegis staff he wasn't like the others. Whatever got enhanced in him fought off the control element of the serum. Reports filtered into the camp of someone stealing bodies and causing mischief reminiscent of Jumper back in school days. Women would wake up in bed next to other women or men without any idea how they got there. Someone's accounts would have been drained. Some would wake up with nasty hang overs. None of it helped Cody in convincing Aegis he wasn't a threat.

Finally, after a year, he managed to convince Aegis he could be set free. They released him, on an unspoken condition Cody picked up on, they would be watching him. To get him going with a new life, they set him up with a place in New Orleans and a full ride to LSU plus room and board. He picked up enough at the school within in weeks to convince him to ditch the school and work for a PR firm. It was fun work for a year or so and he got to travel a bit meeting all sorts of people. Some of the less reputable even tried to get him to become part of their organization, but Cody kept on the lawful side of things and just did the PR work. It wasn't fulfilling work though. All of the women, booze, fine dining, and travel on private jets was fun, but it didn't feel like what the pulp heroes of his youth would do. He also struggled to fit in with modern times.

Sensing from one of the agents Cody knew was following him there was some Aegis openings, Cody approached the befuddled agent who did their best to act not Aegis like until Cody convinced him to drop the act. The openings were in the area Cody excelled at which was people management. Specifically, peoples perception and spin. It was a job Cody was a super star at given his powers plus it didn't hurt he could get into scraps usually winning with his powers if needed.

Multiple times he was offered promotions, but he knew what they entailed. Teams of PR or hostage negotiators he would run. Leadership wasn't his bag and in his position he was able to track and do his best to container Jumper. Jumper took notice of Cody and tried to make life hard for the former rival, but Cody's mental powers could suss out Jumper most of the time. Never an outright villain, Jumper just wanted to be the top dog who could bully people for his own ends. So, he wasn't on others radars as much. A promotion would mean Cody couldn't track Jumper as much. Another luxury of Cody's role was he didn't need to conform to modern tastes as much. Strutting around like a 1920's gangster with swagger mixed with pulp hero just became part of his brand.

When the invasion came, Cody suited up and helped Aegis fight it off. In the ensuing budget cuts, his position got eliminated. So, he took up freelancing and side hero work until Aegis pulled him back in to help sell the four super team approach.

Motivation(Thrills): To a point, Cody is in the hero business for the thrill of it.
Enemy(Jumper): Jumper was a body swapping bully back in school who Cody took down a peg. Jumper aka Peter Floyd has never let it go.
Prejudice(Former student of The Horde): Cody is a former student of one of Hordes feeder schools back in the day. Despite not being aware, until pointed out later, peoples views of him are tainted.
Quirk(Man Out of Time): He was raised in the late 1920's to 1940, so some of his references might be out of date. he also tends to shun technology.

Personality

He has the swagger of 1920's gangster with the thrill seeking attitude of the pulp heroes. He's mostly adjusted to the times, but fights against giving up old ways such as pen and paper or type writers. He understands new technology easy enough plus any of the other sciences, but just prefers the old ways. Generally, he's a fun guy to be around knowing just enough to not break Aegis rules which he has mesmerized.

Michael Monroe aka Saint M
PL 10
PP 175

Image

Age 32

Background

Michael was poor poor. The world, such as it was, had plenty of poor. Of those poor, Michael was worse. His mum, dad, and three sisters lived in a 20 by 20 barely staying together sheet metal hut. Everything the family did was generated by their own labours as they couldn't really reach out to people. Each of them learned how to sew, patch up scrapes, sew up wounds, and in general do what was needed to survive. His sisters, once getting old enough, found men less poor than them and went off to live outside of a sheet metal box. Michael joined the military.

On his first tour in some hell hole, Michaels unit was sent in to save some rich kids who got their position as officers because their dads paid for it to toughen the kids up. By the time the unit fought through the defensive lines of the enemy, only a handful of the officers were alive. Most had died from some wound or other. While the others in his unit wanted to let the rich brats die, Michael applied his school of hard knocks medical skills and managed to save the officers. Among the people he saved was Wilbur Hoff, his best mate fast forwarding ten years into the future. Recognizing his skills, the military trained Michael as a battle field medic and he was soon the most popular person in the unit.

WIlbur and Michael, despite being from different sides of the track became fast friends. After nearly losing his son, WIlbur's dad pulled him out of the officer ranks. Michael stayed in for a few more years before leaving. Waiting for him was a job managing a company owned by WIlbur that catered to rich clients looking for specialized care takers as they did the SIM thing. Angelic Care was a huge success and afforded Michael a lower middle class life. WIlbur largely retreated into the pleasures of VR as his wife would kill him if she caught him cheating for real.

When the latest and greatest game came out, Wilbur kept bugging Michael to give it a try. Michael was hesitant seeing as how people degraded while in VR on a daily basis, but Wilburs persistence finally got Michael to cave on the condition Wilbur see to it someone took care of him. Jumping at the chance, Wilbur created an avatar custom built to Michael's unique way of helping people.

Avatar Background

Saint M is a holy guardian from the realm of light sent from the "good" god Coraya. Being part of a celestial host he is not a paladin, but a full blown angel sent down to help the world and protect it. Empowered with a small portion of the power of Coraya, Saint M was charged to spread light throughout the world and leverage the divinely given gift as one of Coraya's hosts. As such, he is meant to bring comfort to the oppressed, heal the sick, and combat "evil" where ever it lurks.

Motivation(Has a life): Michael has a life outside the sim. He doesn't want to waste away on life support. Despite the world sucking, it's his world with a girlfriend and family that is waiting for him.
Honor: Michael has a strong sense of worth and desire to help people. This carry's over to his avatar where he will sacrifice an attack to help another avatar or other feats of glory.
Reputation(Newbie): Michael doesn't have a bunch of experience with actually being in a sim. Wilbur also may have planted the idea in other players that Michael is a newbie.
Responsibility(His patients): Michael has a responsibility to help care take players. Being trapped in the sim doesn't effect that in his mind. It just makes it harder with limited communication.

Personality

Michael, despite his upbringing is an honourable bloke with a good heart. In the service they called him a saint because how generous he was in helping people. Life outside SIM is horrible, but he has real connections and gets by well enough. Unable to avoid technology completely, he likes old fashion methods such as proper IV's and bandages vs newer tech and ai bots.

Nathanial Cousins
PL 9
PP 137

Image

Age 32

Background

Nathanial Cousins, 6th son and 7th child of Mary and John Cousins, life is best described as two. Before his "awakening", he was one of the few cousins to be dissuaded on numerous occasions from joining the U.S military. Going back to America's founding, there has always been at least three of the Cousins Boston clan on active duty at any given time. From the moment they were born, it was just assumed they would join up in some capacity. Women in more support roles initially until allowed for other duty. Men went to the front line or behind enemy lines. Nate didn't want to fail his families line, but at the same time wasn't the healthiest of kids, one of the smartest, or one of the most fit. When it got closer to his high school graduation with C grades, his father put a merchants marines pamphlet on his desk instead of his brothers Navy Seals, marines, or other combat oriented branch.

It wasn't like Nate didn't try. He worked out daily, studied hard, and did his best. Sometimes though, people just don't have what it takes and while it was a hard pill to swallow Nate was slowly coming to the realization he just wasn't military materiel. Helping others and keeping America safe wasn't something he was cut out. In school, he tried to fight back when bullies went after his friends, but most of the time he ended up in his own locker. One thing that couldn't be said about Nate though was that he wasn't strong willed. Despite it all, he just kept going.

One day while trying yet again to convince the army enlistment officer to let him join up, someone in the enlistment office swapped places with the recruiter. While not the usual route, Nate was offered a chance to earn his way into the army. The services expedited route as it was named involved an intensive 10 week pre bootcamp where candidates could prove their worth. Nate, of course, jumped at the chance. On an island off the Atlantic coast, Nate and 99 others trained harder than they ever did in their lives. Nutritionists would ensure they had the proper shakes and diet. At any given time a quarter of the 100 were out sick due to what Nate thought was the training. Unbeknownst to the 100, they were being given cocktails to bring out what the black ops science division of the army in cooperation with the various corporations called latest extraordinary abilities. At the end of the 10 weeks, none of the 100 did much better than when they started. Written off as a failure of an experiment, the 100 were sent back to their lives.

A few days after the invasion, Nate grabbed his uncles antiquated rifle and rushed to join up with people amassing to try and repel the machines. Few of them survived. Nate was blasted with some sort of high energy weapon that knocked him out cold, but as he fell he felt a burst of energy leave him and slam into the machine knocking it over.

Waking up in a standard issued army tent, one of the numerous recruiters was sitting next to his cot. There was the usual questions of how he was doing and did he remember anything that one would expect after a big lopsided battle. Somehow though, Nate just knew the questions that were coming. On top of that, he felt strong. As best he could tell, some power was triggered that he assumed he just always had. In reality, the energy was just what was needed to activate the cocktail he got before.

New Nate, part two of his life, started by joining up with the Blackwatch unit fighting the machines and other adversaries of the United States. Trainers and various methods helped him tapped into the full extent of powers to the point he could read peoples thoughts with ease, serve as a units comms hub, slice into machines like butter, and much more than he could ever have dreamed. While he thought the people of earth should unite, various factions fought amongst themselves doing the machines work for them. Nate was right in that mix as a member of the Blackwatch. Military training of what remained of the government and continued exercise of his powers made him the warrior he always wanted to become. Through the grape vine, he would hear of the deeds of other Cousin's of Boston taking the fight to the machines in the North East.

Despite his best efforts and trying to get the army of seconds maintained, Nate wasn't able to help keep the government together. Upon it's dissolution, he settled back in the Boston area doing what he could to keep it safe with his brothers, cousins, and others. For a time, the Cousins militia succeeded in keeping Boston safeish. Nate was the only one with powers, but the others had superior training and super science weapons. They held out hope something remained of the old US of A, but deep down they suspected it was gone. So, they kept on fighting for their piece of the world. Boston started to fall to other groups and machines dashing their hopes even more, but they just moved on to become the Cousins rebels fighting out of various spots in the North East employing hit and run tactics.

Hope springs from the smallest seed it is said and Nate had his seed watered. While out on a raid of a CSA caravan, Nate got a mental message from someone about a meeting. Hesitant at first, he showed up with three of his brothers and got the news he was hoping.
