-This statline works for the many subspecies of smaller Gray Wolves. Some debates exist about which ones split off at which points, and how many have Coyote blood (in North America, it's usually a lot), but most kinda fit this statline- equivalent to the African Golden Wolf.

SMALL WOLVES:
INDIAN WOLF: These travel in smaller packs than most, and is less vocal as well. They max out around 55-60 lbs, which would presumably be a problem since their range overlaps with the Asiatic Lion, Tiger, and other large predators. These are Mowgli's adopted tribe in The Jungle Book. Currently endangered, their numbers are between 2,000-3,000. Their reptutation is pretty negative in India, probably owing to centuries of predation, particularly upon small children- they are known to be clever, but are usually created as living weapons by Hindu Gods.

Image

ARABIAN WOLF: These are the smallest Wolves, averaging only about 45 lbs.
ALEXANDER ARCHIPELEAGO WOLF: These are one of the rarest Wolves, living in Alaska. They average between 30-50 lbs.
BAFFIN ISLAND WOLF: From a single Canadian island, these weigh between 30-50 lbs.
EASTERN (TIMBER) WOLF: Timber Wolves are pretty famous, but quite rare in eastern North America. They're partway between Coyotes & Gray Wolves in size (it's thought they're the product of long-ago interbreeding), being about 53-67 lbs. on average.

Image

VANCOUVER ISLAND WOLF: Gray-looking wolves from a very small region. They average about 60 lbs., and possibly number only 150.
GREENLAND WOLF: Only weighing around 60 lbs., these Wolves were hunted to near-extinction and today are quite inbred.

Image

FALKLAND ISLANDS WOLF: The only native land mammal of the Falkland Islands (which I only remember because of The Simpsons), these animals went extinct in 1876, the first canid species to die out in modern history. They were known to be fearless around humans, and thus easily killed (you could lure it with a piece of meat in one hand, then kill it with a knife in the other). It's probably most likely related to the Maned Wolf. They weighed about 46 lbs.

-A fairly large chunk of Wolves only weight between 60-100 lbs., and thus wouldn't be quite as bad-ass as the big Gray Wolves I statted before.

MID-SIZED WOLVES:
RED WOLF: A critically-endangered species from the southern U.S., these used to be much more common before we showed up- the Coyote was much more successful and ended up moving into the Red Wolf's range (they had once split North America's southern portion). They have since hybridized and often get hunted, despite attempts to place many back into the wild. They're about 85 lbs. maximum.

Image

MONGOLIAN WOLF: Slightly shorter than regular Gray Wolves, and maxing out around 82 lbs.
STEPPE WOLF: Also known as the Caspian Sea Wolf, they remind me of 1970s rock. They live in southern Russia and around the Persian-related nations. They max out around 88 lbs.
TUNDRA WOLF: These live in the very far north of Eurasia. They typically weigh between 44-110 lbs.

Image

HIMALAYAN WOLF: These now only live in scattered locations around the Himalayas. They average about 77 lbs, and mostly kill goats and sheep.

Image

MEXICAN WOLF: These are the rarest Wolves in North America, living in only two little pockets in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. They max out at around 100 lbs.

Image

EXTINCT WOLVES: Some of these are hard to classify. They include the Bernard's Wolf (Arctic), Japanese Wolf (a slender type from mainland Japan; wiped out by rabies and the Meiji Restoration's wolf-killing policy), Hokkaido Wolf, Mongolian Mountain Wolf, Texas Wolf, Florida Black Wolf, Great Plains Wolf (central North America), Southern Rocky Mountain Wolf, Gregory's Wolf (Mississippi region), Kenai Peninsula Wolf, Cascade Mountains Wolf, Newfoundland Wolf & the Sicilian Wolf.

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 6 (Acute & Extended Scent, Low-Light Vision, Scent-Tracking, Ultra & Extended Hearing) [6]

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Wolves cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Relationship (The Pack)- Wolves are known by a strict pecking order in the pack, with the Alphas getting first choice in any matter, and Omegas at the bottom. The pack fights as one, and moves as one.

Total: Abilities: 26 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 5 (62)

Era: Pleistocene Epoch
Range: North & South America
Stereotypes: Either proud and noble rulers of the forest, or vicious, cruel monsters.
Colouring: Gray, white, brown, black
Size: Up to 5 feet long (130-190 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Packs of 3-12 led by adult mating pair.
Diet: Large herbivores
Tactics: Surround and bring down in groups, tripping prey.

-The Dire Wolf (yes, it's a real animal) is an extinct relative (not ancestor- they evolved off the same branch) of the modern Wolf, being a bigger, tougher variant, heavier than some people and nearly all Dog breeds (190 pounds at maximum estimated size), and quite a bit more bad-ass in all likelihood. The animal presented here is the most bad-ass any animal from the Canine family could become, a PL 6 beast that could bring down your average man easily, and even take a bullet or two before dropping dead. They're only a match for super-heroes and the like if they attack in groups... but they will ALWAYS attack in groups.

-This is the Dire Wolf of D&D fame, basically a standard Wolf upgraded to Horse-equivalent size. Can you imagine a wolf that big bearing down on you? There's a reason these things have been D&D staples for years, though once they went whole-hog into bizarre fantasy mounts (Dragons, Pegasi, etc.), something that was basically a normal animal, scaled up, just lacked a punch, I guess. Plus there's the terrifying Wolf from "The Neverending Story", but he could talk and stuff.

-This Giant Wolf is kind of like the Gods seen in Princess Mononoke- even bigger than the Dire Wolf of D&D, they are no mere riding beasts- they're Forest Spirits, capable of wiping out whole human villages by themselves. For the Mononoke versions, they'd be smarter, plus a bit ageless.

-Winter Wolves are basically a cool-looking bad-ass Fantasy Wolf that I got out of a Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. I like the idea of "Animals plus powers" in Fantasy campaigns, plus the idea of a sentient, evil race of fearsome wolves running around out there. They have a great deal of PL 8 power, in addition to a PL 6 Snare/Damage Linked effect, allowing them to freeze & entrap creatures while Damaging their Fortitude in a Cone Area Effect.

The Weasel Family

Post by Jabroniville »

MUSTELIDAE FAMILY (Order- Carnivora):
-Mustelids are a group of small animals from the Order Carnivora, but is the most diverse of them, and has the most overall species. They cover everything from Arctic creatures (ermines), burrowers (badgers), arboreal hunters (martens), and even the waterways (the aquatic Otters), and vary greatly in size and shape (most are long and narrow, while Badgers & Wolverines are squat; the tiniest is the Least Weasel, which is barely larger than a mouse, while others can weigh 100 lbs.). Famous for their totally nifty fur (a reason the Ermine, Mink, Sable and others are farmed and skinned regularly), others are known for the particularly pungent odours they're capable of producing (though all but the Sea Otter have anal scent-glands for this purpose). It also contains some famous aggressive predators, and even the small, weedy Weasels are actually terrifying- think, they can kill RABBITS, despite being a tenth their size. These may actually be pound-for-pound the most hardcore group of animals on the face of the Earth!

-Nearly every member of the Weasel family is considered in a negative light, going right into the English language itself. A "weasely" person is cowardly and shifty- untrustworthy, and a "polecat" is a prosmiscuous woman. We "ferret" out the enemy, "badger" people to annoyance, and "skunk" out on the bill. The Japanese thought of them as yokai who, if they survived for 100 years, upgraded to even more powerful forms. This is largely because the animals are both extremely troublesome pests (easily killing chickens and other small domestic animals) and very difficult to catch, as well as having "underhanded" attack methods involving sneaking about and grappling larger prey with precision bites. Never mind the numbers of them that can spray you.

-Many Mustelids are among the most-endangered creatures on the planet- the Black-Footed Ferret and the European Mink are in critical trouble- the Sea Mink went extinct so long ago that we've now no clue what it looked like, or what its habits were. Only the Ferret has been domesticated to any large degree, though Fur Farms are common for the softest-furred ones. Particularly-clueless environmental activists have released hundreds of Mustelids into the wild... not realizing that they are some of the most-effective rabbit hunters in existence. Local endangered Rabbit populations were presumably not impressed.

-Note: The Skunk Family has since been separated from Mustelids, but I'm including them in the group. But really, the particular "names" of these groups doesn't really matter- nature is more like a growing tree than a list of columns with appropriate names.

It was once said by a zoologist somewhere that there was a creature that was so voracious and savage and vicious that if it were the size of a small dog it would rapidly overrun the world and eat pretty much everything it ran across

he was talking about weasels
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Weasels cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: -16 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 33 / Defenses: 4 (38)

Era: Modern
Range: North America & Eurasia
Colouring: Brown & white
Stereotypes: Sneaky, tricky liars.
Size: Up to 9 inches long (1-9 ounces)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Insects, rodents, rabbits, eggs, birds, refuse; opportunistic hunter in general.
Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or exhausting tricks on larger prey.

-Weasels are notorious in myth for being sneaky (weaseling out of things is what separates us from the ANIMALS... except the weasel), tricky creatures, owing to their great stealth and ability to fit just about anywhere. This has led to a rather villainous reputation (The Wind in the Willows uses Weasels & Stoats as general dicks who actively hurt everyone and steal everything- fellow mustelid Badger is a good-natured ally), but some cultures, naturally many Native American ones among them, respect them as wise, crafty creatures. In one culture, the Least Weasel could kill the infamous Wendigo by crawling up its anus (the fuuuu....?). Among the most far-reaching of predators, they can be found all over the damn place, but there's no one particular "weasel"- the Least Weasel is the closest, and is the smallest Carnivore in existence. Despite their tiny size (less than a pound), they are capable of hunting animals as big as RABBITS, via exhausting the rabbits through a long, medium-speed chase, then capturing the animal in a death-grip and CRUSHING ITS SKULL AND NECK.

-The Weasel's tiny size enables it to be extremely hard to hit, though it doesn't have the raw Toughness to deal with taking damage. At PL 2, they're not exactly fearsome... unless you happen to be at or around the same level, at which point the tenacious little buggers will bite through your damn spine. Rabbits are a DOZEN times the size of a Least Weasel, making such a hunt pretty spectacular. Weasels actually have to hunt VERY often, as their high metabolism demands them to eat 25% of their body weight each day.

They're also famed as the enemy of basilisks, who'll perish from the scent of a weasel's urine. (However, some also claim that weasels themselves perish from the scent of their urine, so it's a mixed bag, really.)

Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or exhausting tricks on larger prey.

-These Eurasian & North American animals are known by Stoat, Ermine, or Short-Tailed Weasel. They look much like Weasels, but are about twice as long and much thicker- essentially a size upgrade in every way. In England, Stoats appeared alongside Weasels as a mob of villains in The Wind and the Willows. "Ermine" is typically a name given to any weasel family member in its white winter coat, but especially those of stoats- Ermine fur is extraordinarily popular, and a sign of exquisite wealth.

-Stoats were introduced into Australia to control wild rabbit populations, where the animal's terrifying hunting capabilities made it an even worse nuisance as an invasive species to rare birds. Most of their prey are small rodents, and they will exclusively eat them if plentiful, but will also take rabbits.

-There exist several very small Mustelids, which helps make this the largest group in Carnivora. A tricky thing with these tiny guys is that they're all so small that they have equal stats, even though some of them are twice the size of others. M&M just doesn't have the granularity to differentiate a 9-inch predator from a 22-inch one.

Small Mustelid Types:

Image

BACK-STRIPED WEASEL: A 12-14 inch Asian Weasel.
EGYPTIAN WEASEL: So similar to the Least Weasel that it was only listed as a separate species in 1992. Omnivorous enough to have 50% of its diet be plant matter.
LONG-TAILED WEASEL: North American weasel, varying in size across its range from 14-22 inches. Turns white in winter.
COLOMBIAN WEASEL: Very rare weasel known only from a few scattered specimens. Though to inhabit the rainforests of northern South America.
AMAZON WEASEL: The largest South American weasel.
MOUNTAIN WEASEL: Lives in the mountains of Asia.
YELLOW-BELLIED WEASEL: Chinese species with a distinct, yellow-colored underbelly. About 10 inches long.
JAPANESE WEASEL: Among the few mammalian predators left in Japan.
INDONESIAN MOUNTAIN WEASEL: These live on Java & Sumatra at high elevations, and are about 12 inches long.
MALAYAN WEASEL: These 12-14 inch Weasels live in the Thai/Malayan area in a wide swath across the islands.
SIBERIAN WEASEL: A medium-sized (11-15 inch) Weasel native to Asia. Their fur is often used for calligraphy pens.

BLACK-FOOTED FERRET: These animals are incredibly rare, and were once extinct in the wild owing to falling Prairie Dog populations and a plague- they are considered a success story of bringing captive creatures back to the wild. There now exist a thousand or so repatriated populations. They are quite similar to the Polecat & Mink in size and shape, just having more distinctive color separations on their fur.

FERRET-BADGER: Small, 3-7 lb. mustelids with five species: Bornean, Chinese, Javan, Vietnam & Burmese Ferret-Badgers. All but the Bornean (which is Endangered) are relatively-common, and live typical mustelid lifestyles, eating a variety of things. They pretty much all look like Ferrets, to me- long and slender, with triangular heads.

-This genus is related to the other mustelids, but produces some larger specimens in some cases.

Species Types:
AFRICAN STRIPED WEASEL: Looks exactly like a weasel with skunk colors. One of the smallest mammalian carnivores in Africa, about 11-13 inches long.
PATAGONIAN WEASEL: Small, 12-14 inch mustelids from western South America. More closely related to Grisons and African Polecats.
STRIPED POLECAT: Also called the "Zorilla", these long, striped mustelids hail from Africa. About 28 inches long and 2-3 lbs., they're standard-issue small mustelids. Aggressive and territorial, they will spray through their anal glands.
SAHARAN STRIPED POLECAT: These Polecats are white with brown stripes down their sides. These mostly eat eggs, small birds & mammals, and lizards.

Image

MARBLED POLECAT: Named for its distinct black-spotted brown back, these live across Eurasia.

Image

LESSER GRISON: Living further south than the much larger Greater Grisons, these max out around 5 lbs. Some have been tamed to hunt wild Chinchillas.

Hey, everyone has to shake the weasel at one time or another! :D
