Hot diggity damn, check it out: someone uploaded the entirety of “The Bushbaby” to YouTube. One of the first animes I ever saw (1993). https://lostmediawiki.com/The_Bush_Baby ... s;_1993%29

The theme song is remarkably epic, even if the lyrics are trash (also they mention leopards when a Cheetah is visible on screen, lol). This had to have been very unique for 1993 television, though- a leopard with blood dripping from its mouth is seen in the first of the final four episodes, and the episode culminates with a guy stabbing it through the side with a spear. I recall many of the animes I watched as a kid being either very visceral and frightening like this, or just very ethereal and "different" in that distinctly Japanese way I wouldn't have understood back then (like The Little Prince or the anime Alice in Wonderland were).

It's hard not to look at Murphy and see him as an inspiration for Pikachu- some of those expressions and physical tics are CRAZY similar.

Japan has a weird sort of cross-ocean pop culture love of Canadian novels, for reasons I’ve never been able to fathom. There was a theme park in Hokkaido called “Canadian World” that was largely devoted to the ‘Anne of Green Gables’ series but also incorporated some other Canadian literature from other authors... The theme park went bust in the late Nineties during Japan’s economic slump, so the municipal government took over. No, really. Japan has a public park that contains a 1:1 scale replica of a Victorian Canadian farming village.

So, yeah, a Japanese anime based on a Canadian novel about a squirrel-sized monkey-rat thing? It’s so weird an idea that it must be true.

Next, you will tell me they have a great show about robots, with a giant golden one that fights monsters!

Tariers and some of the same ones in the family also have poisonous bites and as i understand it glands under their arms that can be toxic

Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Insects.
Tactics: Flee at all costs into the trees, sneak-attacks on insects.

-The smallest of Lemurs all weigh less than a pound- Dwarf Lemurs, Mouse Lemurs & Fork-Marked Lemurs are three closely-related groups. Given the tiny size of these creatures, they are hard to study and very widely-spread out, and we're probably missing quite a few species. Many are very Endangered or live in very tiny regions.

Types of Tiny Lemurs:
DWARF LEMURS: There are nine species of Dwarf Lemur. They have rounded heads (unlike the fox-like heads of larger Lemurs), and they are quick-moving plant-eaters.

Image

MOUSE LEMURS: The smallest kind of Lemurs, and the smallest primates in the world. There are 24 different species, likely evolving from a common ancestor 10 million years ago. They eat fruit, small arthropods and tiny vertebrates.
FORK-MARKED LEMURS: There are four Fork-Marked Lemurs, named for the black stripes along their backs, which divide onto the crown of the head and spread to their eyes. They eat tree gum made by insect holes, and supplement on the actual insects.
MONGOOSE LEMUR: Actually among the Brown Lemurs, these were introduced to some islands north of Madagascar, but are still Critically-Endangered.

-These small Lemurs are usually between 1-4 lbs.- barely statistically different from Tiny Lemurs, they have a notch more Stamina and that's it.

Types of Small Lemurs:
BAMBOO LEMURS: Very fluffy Lemurs existing in five species. Sometimes called "Gentle Lemurs", there are nine species living in in bamboo forests, and eat bamboo almost exclusively (how they deal with the cyanide within them is unknown- this is normally fatal to such small animals). They are the only Lemurs said to be good swimmers- most go to the water only to drink. The Lac Alaotra Bamboo Lemur is Critically-Endangered, living around the red beds of only a single lake. The Greater Bamboo Lemur was thought Extinct until a remnant population was discovered in 1986- only 500 remain, making it one of the world's most-Endangered primates.

Image

SPORTIVE LEMURS: Also named "Weasel Lemurs" for their swiftness. They primarily eat leaves, and there are about 26 species, many of which are Critically-Endangered.

A lot of you might be familiar with the low-ranked demons from D&D, Lemures and have wondered if they have any relationship to the primates... They do!

Lemures are a type of monster/ghost/spirit from Roman folklore. They were the vengeful spirits of people who died without receiving proper funeral rites. They wander the night, go bump in the night, cause bad luck, and all the usual ghost tropes.

Carl Linnaeus (yes, that Carl Linnaeus) was referencing them when he named the order of animals, backforming the Classical Latin “Lemures” into the modern Latin “Lemurs.”

Total: Abilities: -10 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 26 / Defenses: 6 (44)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Various
Colouring: Grey/white/brown
Size: Up to 2 feet long (2-6 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups (2-20 members).
Diet: Fruit & nectar, some insects.
Tactics: Flee at all costs into the trees, sneak-attacks on insects.

-The Brown Lemurs (also called "True Lemurs") and Ruffed Lemurs are of similar stature. Brown Lemurs include twelve species, including the tiny Mongoose Lemurs (listed separately), while there are two kinds of Ruffed Lemurs. Most of these Lemurs are around 5 lbs.- basically cat-sized, but slightly less durable. Most of these Lemurs are very social, being of different families than the prior ones. Most eat fruit and nectar, but may supplement with insects.

-These Lemurs get another upgrade to Toughness, as well as some hitting power and Will.

Types of Brown Lemurs:
BLACK-AND-WHITE RUFFED LEMUR: Critically-Endangered with a striking two-color scheme.

Image

BROWN LEMURS: Common Brown, Collared Brown & Sanford's Brown Lemurs. All of similar appearance.

Image

RED LEMURS: Red-Fronted, Red-Bellied & Red Lemurs. All named for their coloring- the Red-Bellied is particularly a dark chestnut color.
WHITE-HEADED LEMUR: From Northern Madagascar. Can live up to 36 years.
GRAY-HEADED LEMUR: Critically-Endangered. Closely related to the Brown.
CROWNED LEMUR: Named for their black and/or orange crowned heads. Will cross the razor-sharp limestone rocks to reach their feeding grounds. Live sympatric with the Sanford's Brown Lemur because they eat different things.

Image

BLACK LEMUR: Males are black, while females are brown. They are known to kill poisonous millipedes and rub the poison all over their fur to deter predators.
BLUE-EYED BLACK LEMUR: Males are solid black, while females are reddish-brown. These are the only primates other than humans to consistently have blue eyes. Unusually for Lemurs, they will kill the young of other species of Lemurs when in captivity.

Image

RED RUFFED LEMUR: Was considered the same species as the Black-and-White until 2001. Are largely rusty-red where the previous one is white.
CLEESE'S LEMUR: A recently-discovered Lemur, named after John Cleese due to his fondness for lemurs.

-Ring-Tailed Lemurs are by far the most famous and beloved members of the Lemur family- their amazing tails and cute appearance has made them extraordinarily-popular, and they are now common in zoos (less so in the wild- pretty much every animal in Madagascar is either Vulnerable or Endangered today). King Julien in the Madagascar films was a major character, only furthering this.

-Though arboreal, these Lemurs spend about a third of their time on the ground- unusual for the family. They share their range with 24 other types of Lemurs, and warm themselves by facing the sun and sitting in a "Buddha"-like spread-armed pose.

-Lemurs aren't very big, and aren't as smart as most primates, but are solid PL 2 defensive fighters. Their predators include native animals like the Fossa & Boa, as well as introduced animals like dogs & cats.

Era: Modern
Range: Madagascar
Colouring: Brownish-grey.
Size: Up to 3 feet long (2-10 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Grubs & insects.
Tactics: Flee using speed, or biting.

-Easily the weirdest-looking of all the Lemurs is the scrawny, wire-haired Aye-Aye. Their most disturbing feature by far is their elongated middle finger- a spindly, arachnid-like digit designed to tap bark to find grubs hidden beneath (percussive detection- they're searching for hollows), and then dig in with a thicker one to spear the morsel and drag it out. Their freakish appearance has made them an object of suspicion to the Malagasy people of Madagascar, who will kill them on sight and string them up to ward off evil spirts. Unsurprisingly, this and habitat loss have made them Endangered.

-I was particularly struck when I visited the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo and found one of these critters bouncing around its habitat like Robbie Baldwin- I was imagining a slower, more static creature, being a grub-eater, but this thing was springing off every surface so quickly that despite waiting for fifteen minutes, I could not get a single clear picture. The ones in the London Zoo were much more accomodating, but it was clear these things were as athletic as other Lemurs.

-Aye-Ayes are fairly small Lemurs, weighing only 4 lbs., so they are on the weaker end of the spectrum. They have better senses than most Lemurs (as they detect their prey by hearing, having great "directional" auditory detection), though.

COQUEREL'S SIFAKA: The mascot of the kids' science show Zoboomafoo was one of these- it died of kidney failure in 2014.

VON DER DECKEN'S SIFAKA: Creamy-white.
VERREAUX'S SIFAKA: These are so focused on an arboreal lifestyle that their only means of locomotion on the ground is by hopping.

GOLDEN-CROWNED SIFAKA: At great risk, as gold-hunters find it an easy source of bushmeat, and they have a specialized plant diet that's not easy to replicate in captivity.
CROWNED SIFAKA: Very fluffy and cream-colored.

PERRIER'S SIFAKA: All-black- about 12 lbs.

Types of Large Sifakas:
DIADEMED SIFAKA: A striking brown/grey lemur, the second largest next to the Indri.
MILNE-EDWARDS'S SIFAKA: Brown & black Sifakas, very closely related to the Diademed (once considered a subspecies).
