KEA (Nestor notabilis)
Role:
MOTHERF*CKING CARNIVOROUS PARROTS, Y'ALL!
PL 1 (21)- Minion Rank 2, Sidekick Rank 5
Normal Version:
PL 0
STRENGTH -4 STAMINA -3 AGILITY 0
FIGHTING 0 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -3 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Athletics 10 (+5)
Close Combat (Beaky Bite) 2 (+4)
Expertise (Survival) 4 (+5)
Perception 4 (+5)

Advantages:
Close Attack 2

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 3 (Extended Scent, Low-Light & Ultra-Vision) [3]
Flight 3 (16 mph) (Flaws: Winged) [3]
"Nut-Cracking Beak" Strength-Damage +2 [2]

"Tiny Size" Shrinking 8 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) -- (1 foot) [17]
(-2 Strength, +4 Defenses, +8 Stealth, -4 Intimidation, -1 Speed)

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (-4 Damage, DC 11)
Beak +4 (-2 Damage, DC 13)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness -3, Fortitude +0, Will +3

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their wings & beaks to easily manipulate objects. Parrots can, however, learn to mimic human speech, though cannot truly converse- only repeat what they've been taught to say.

Total: Abilities: -20 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 5 (22)

Era: Modern Day
Range: New Zealand.
Stereotypes: Showy.
Colouring: Almost any.
Size: 6-25 inches long (50 ounces to 0.5 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary to small circuses (2-13).
Diet: Mostly fruit & nuts, also insects & carrion.
Tactics: Flee using flight, or bite with large beak.

-The Kea of New Zealand is little-known, but quite notorious, since it's a species of CARNIVOROUS PARROTS. A pretty good size and olive-green, they have very long, narrow beaks by Parrot standards, which they use to opportunistically hunt down fresh carrion. Okay, so technically they're omnivorous- they mostly eat roots, berries, nectar and insects, but boy- you see a bunch of parrots fly around and act like goddamn vultures, you take note of it.

-Kea are now quite uncommon, as back in the day, a bounty was placed on them because farmers suspected them of tearing strips off of sheep (this was much-debated and was thought to possibly be a folk tale, but was finally observed on camera in 1992- it remains rare, however). Their numbers were probably between 1-5,000 in the '80s, but pronounced efforts to keep them alive has helped them recover to 2-3 times that in the years since. Kea nest on the ground, often in long tunnels. They are notoriously investigative, leading their sharp beats to tear up car tires, plastics, wood, and metals as they feel about their surroundings. They are thus stereotyped as "cheeky" and clownish, being destructive and prone to just swiping stuff.

-Kea are largely similar to Macaws and the like, being around the same size (1-2 lbs.) and with sharper, narrow beaks instead of big, crushing ones. Like many parrots, they are quite intelligent, able to solve logical puzzles and prepare and use tools.

Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Small Birds are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Bird of this scale effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -34 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 30 / Defenses: 5 (20)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Worldwide.
Stereotypes: N/A.
Colouring: Brown/grey.
Size: 9-16 inches long (1.4-7.4 ounces)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups.
Diet: Insects & fruit.
Tactics: Snatch on the wing.

-The colorful Trogons make up one family in one order- 46 species in all. Living across the globe in tropical forests, they gnaw holes in trees to make their nests, and might be related to Mousebirds & Owls. They have exceptionally weak legs by bird standards, being unable to walk effectively and requiring their wings to even move around on branches. Trogons are reclusive and rarely ever seen- little is known about their biology. In Asia & Africa they are called "Trogons", while in Mexico they are called Quetzals- the Resplendent Quetzal being an inspiration for Quetzalcoatl, sacred to the snake-god. Their feathers were used to decorate the chiefs of Maya tribes, linking them to Quetzalcoatl, and the bird's inability to thrive in captivity made it represent freedom.

My long time fantasy football team name was the Ragin' Caucasians. When people looked at me crossways when they saw it, I always said I'd change it when the Washington Redskins changed theirs. Since they actually did, I've been struggling with a new name but I think the Carnivorous Parrots has jumped to the top of the list... 8-)

Haha yeah that would be a good team name. Or a band name!

Wow I didn’t even know the Redskins finally switched. I know the Edmonton Eskimos became the Elks this year.

-Mousebirds are named for being small, grey birds with a tendency to skitter through the underbrush like rodents. They have an order unto themselves, but are considered related to Trogons, Hornbills & Woodpeckers. They live exclusively in Africa- the only order of birds so limited. They are considered "living fossils", as the six species remaining today are the survivors of a once-massive lineage.

-Hoopoes are tiny relatives of Hornbills. Another animal that fits the "Generic Tiny Bird" Template.

HOOPOES: Robin-sized birds in three species. The Eurasian Hoopoe has a vast distribution for something I've never heard of, covering much of Eurasia & Africa. They are named for their "Hoo-poo" call, and have a flight pattern that resembles that of an undulating butterfly.

WOOD HOOPOES: Very distinctive, Wood Hoopoes have a metallic sheen on their feathers and very long, curved bills. There are five Wood Hoopoes and three largely-unstudied Scimitarbills.

Coyote. Roadrunners are actually a type of fast-moving ground Cuckoo- there is a Greater & Lesser, differentiated mostly by size. They are quick-moving hunters who generally attack small animals- their speed is such that they are one of the few animals that hunts RATTLESNAKES.
It has been pointed out that in real life, coyotes are faster than roadrunners. However, if the Roadrunner is clearly gigantic for its species, being of similar height/length as Wylie. I wonder if a roadrunner really was that big with double its normal stride, would it then be faster than a normal sized coyote.

-Hornbills can get quite large- anything in the 4-10 lb. region fits this statline.

-The largest Hornbills are the Ground Hornbills- these are a Northern & Southern species, among the longest-lived of all birds (up to 70 years in captivity). They are opportunistic hunters, following herds of ungulates to prey upon the small animals disturbed by their migrations. They are long-distance walkers and pouncers. The 6-lb. Helmeted Hornbill of Asia is Critically-Endangered. The Great Hornbill is of similar size, and will sometimes take small owls or squirrels along with the usual bugs & reptiles.

Coraciiformes

Post by Jabroniville »

NEAR-PASSERINES (Coraciiformes):
-Kingfishers and their relatives are Passerine-like, but have very large heads with long bills, designed to capture fish and insects, which they attack after swooping down from a perch. All are brightly colored with only small differences between the sexes. Most are tropical in nature, with some found in forests. Most live inside cavities dug out of the ground.

-Also tiny, the Kingfishers are named for the Common Kingfisher, known throughout most of the Old World (with only a few in the Americas). There are River Kingfishers, Water Kingfishers and Tree Kingfishers, making up around a hundred species. River Kingfishers are the tiniest, with small bodies and big bills. Water Kingfishers have large crests, and include the Giant Kingfisher. The Tree Kingfishers are the most numerous family, with dozens of representatives- including the Kookaburras of Australia & New Guinea. The boisterous, laughing call of the Kookaburra has become such an iconic "Wild Bird Call" that it's used in fiction set all over the world's jungles, even though Kookaburras pretty much live entirely around the Pacific Islands. Swiss Family Robinson, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and various Disney Parks all use this call everywhere.

Herons

Post by Jabroniville »

HERONS & RELATIVES:
-A large family within the "Pelican" order, consisting of about 64 species, the Herons are largely similar in scope and size. This whole group includes the Herons and their relatives, such as Egrets, Storks, Ibises, Spoonbills and the carrion-eating Maribou Stork. Most of these animals are large-bodied, with extremely long legs and webbed feet for standing in deep water- their flexible, retractible necks allowing the animals to lash out and capture fish in the water surrounding their legs. Herons are very migratory.
