This might seem a little obvious and unhelpful, but I just wanted to thank you for writing up multiple builds for the varied kinds of each variety of animal. Far too many times I've been told to use the "dog stat block" for everything from a terrier to a great dane. Getting separate builds for different varieties of bat or different builds for hares and rabbits is a truly amazing resource.

Thank you.

No problem! I’m glad my obsessive need to categorize everything can be useful to someone else :)!

-Largely not that famous, Giant Salamanders are particularly well-named- I am frequently floored to see that there 50-110 lb. salamanders living in the wild! The Japanese Giant Salamander is the third-largest, hitting a mere 15-30 lbs. on the regular. Like most large animals, they are quite long-lived- they are estimated to be able to live 30-60 years on average.

-So these don't really have IMPRESSIVE stats, per se... it's just a bit crazy to see an amphibian with Abilities & PLs equal to those of a small dog.

-The Chinese Giant Salamanders are the largest- hitting an insane , is Critically-Endangered in the wild, but a couple million live in captivity, primarily to supply the food market. One kept at a farm in China actually grew to 130 lbs., which is a prehistoric-level size. They will vocalize, making barking, whining, hissing or crying sounds- in China, they are called "infant fish" for their vocal similarity to a human child.

-These huge salamanders can hit the weight numbers of most people, and as such are PL 2.5- they don't attack large targets, but they're big, meaty creatures who can take some punishment

Stereotypes: Friendly heroes.
Colouring: Any Possible Color, in any possibly design.
Size: Up to 8 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200.
Diet: Small animals (insects, fish, small mammals, other amphibians).

-Frogs are extremely common and famous- their noisy nature (their ribbits attract mates) and proximity to human habitats has made them somewhat legendary for their leaping ability, noises (the famous "ribbit" is known in California, and thus replicated elsewhere as the "standard frog noise" in Hollywood pictures), and elongated tongues, which they use to capture and eat insects. Extremely colorful and with huge eyes, they are deemed "cute" and thus less objectionable than the lumpy toads or lizard-like salamanders- Frogs are typically depicted as heroes in fictional stories. Their semi-permeable skin allows for toxins to easily enter their bodies, making them effective "environmental bellweathers"- disruptions in frog populations typically denote something wrong at higher levels of a habitat.

-All Frogs & Toads are from the Order "Anura" (literally "without tail"), and there is no real taxonomic nomenclature behind which is which. Frogs are ancient, having developed in the early Jurassic period. Most members of the species impregnant externally, with females laying eggs and the males fertilizing them in clusters.

-Most Frogs are exceptionally-tiny and thus fit the stats here, like Mice or other tiny rodents would. -5 Damage & -5 Toughness, but a lot of quickness.

Frog Types:
POOL FROG: Basic European green frog.
WATER FROGS: A variety of species of Eurasian frogs, including the Pool Frog above.
COMMON FROG: Another Eurasian frog- lives in damp areas but is mistaken for a Toad because of its dry, lumpy skin.

Image

EDIBLE FROG: Hilariously-named for the fact that they are literally used as a delicacy in places like France.

Image

PANAMANIAN GOLDEN FROG: Brightly-colored, beautiful frogs, but possibly Extinct in the wild (they are kept in captivity).

Image

GREEN FROG: Standard frog from the Eastern U.S. Live in permanent bodies of water.
BURROWING FROGS & TOADS: Many species are known for hiding out in burrows they've dug during the day.
POUCHED FROG: Males carry the eggs in a pouch along their legs.
MARSUPIAL FROGS: More pouched frogs, mostly from South & Central America.
HORNED FROGS: Flat-looking frogs with pronounced pointed "horns" above their eyes.

Image

MADAGASCAR TOMATO FROG: Ridiculously-distinctive big red, round frog.
GOLDEN TOAD: Now Extinct. Always rare, it was from a small portion of Costa Rica. Inclement weather adversely affects them, to the point where a few generations failed. Scientists are still trying to figure out why their decline was so quick (infectious diseases, weather, etc. are blamed), but they are no more.
TAILED FROGS: Males sport tiny tails used to deposit sperm internally (the only frogs to do this- most frogs are extrernal impregnators).
GLASS FROGS: Named for their semi-transparent skin, which allows for the heart, lungs and gastrointestinal tract to be somewhat visible.

Image

GOLDEN MANTELLA: Madagascar-borne frogs that are either uniformly yellow, orange or red.

-Famous for images of these large-eyed frogs clinging to tree branches. Convergent evolution has led to hundreds of Frogs statting up like this, even when not closely related. The Gliding Frogs can use the webbing between their toes to slow their falls, enabling long "glides" from treetops.

-These Frogs differ from others by their famous ability to withstand freezing temperatures, even the freezing of their own bodies and blood. This is extremely rare among animals, especially ones with backbones, and is still being studied. Most notable is the Wood Frog, found throughtout much of North America, typically in forests, swamps, and other woody habitats.

-Closely related to Frogs, but differentiated by being uglier, lumpy and rotund, the Common Toad is one of the only "true toads", as the term "Toad" isn't really a scientific thing- it's just something that gets attached to lumpy frogs a lot. These guys are a bit slower on land than Frogs tend to be, but are still voracious eaters. Unlike most Frogs, they tend to have very dry, lumpy skin. Like Fire-Bellied Toads (not closely related), they taste rather foul- some animals that eat them are either unbothered (Grass Snakes) or avoid the toxin (Crowd will peck out their livers). Their fame comes from the fact that they live across Eurasia, so they appear in myths all over the place that had an effect on European & Asian societies. As such, they have been associated with witchcraft for generations, usually as an ingredient in their rituals. They were strongly associated with the Devil as well- a coat of arms was invented featuring three of them. They can live for up to fifty years in captivity.

-Toads are pretty much just like frogs- six inches long and not very durable.

-Small frogs named "Toads" for their lumpy exteriors, these animals broadcast their foul taste via their titular red bellies. Their skin secretes a poison that renders them irritable to mucous membranes- it's likely many animals will eat such a creature... but only once.

I thought that was the Peter Parker emo dance scene.

-African Clawed Frogs are voracious predators and a notorious invasive species- if let out in unfamiliar territory, these aggressive hunters can easily shred small prey, which they will readily devour (just about anything, including carrion, will be eaten). They are notable for their use in reproductive studies- it was found in the 1930s that the injection of urine from pregnant women would cause these frogs to develop eggs. This made them a handy pregnancy test. HOW they came to discover this via experimentation I have no idea (like, were they just putting pregnant pee into every animal they could find?), but there it is. They can live up to 30 years in captivity.

-These are basic Frogs, but with better accuracy in combat.
