-American Bullfrogs hail from the Eastern U.S., but are now an infamous invasive species for their incredible appetites- they are voracious eaters, skittish and hard to catch, and prodigious breeders. This adds up to make them lethal to any habitat they invade- and they invade a lot of them. Bullfrogs have spread across much of the globe, and once they become entrenched, they are very hard to get rid of, and will readily finish off previous inhabitants, particularly rival amphibians. Males will wrestle each other for dominance, and appear in massive "choruses" in attempts to win over females. The name "bullfrog" comes from its bull-like mating call.

-African Bullfrogs are similarly-lethal hunters, and are even larger, but haven't been introduced as much. The term "Bullfrog" is generally thrown onto any strong, predatory frog of solid size, any many are not closely related at all.

-Bullfrogs will chase down and swallow whole anything, not using a tongue as many other frogs do. They are better fighters than most frogs, and a fair bit tougher (though only about as much as a Rat- -4 Toughness).

-Cane Toads are probably the most infamous introduced species in the world, now famously spread across Eastern Australia after they were introduced to feed on other pests (after there was great success at their introduction to Puerto Rico, where they killed many sugar cane-eating beetles). As a rapid-breeding, large, aggressive, poisonous animal, Cane Toads cut a swath across the continent, damaging many native species (especially the Northern Quoll, and many snakes ans small lizards) because it generates enough poison to kill anything dog-sized and under. Since they are poisonous to the touch, they can kill household pets as well, but the main issue is they'll eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth and will breed in great numbers. Efforts are now being undertaken to exterminate the Toads everywhere they are found, and convince other animals there not to try and eat them.

-Cane Toads are effectively generic toads with a fairly potent poison secreted from their skin. It typically won't kill people, but can and has.

This brings up so many questions :)

'Bob (the Beaver), I know they're tasty. But they're bad for you. You've got to stop trying to eat them.'?

-Frogs from the family Dendrobatidae are famous for their poisonous secretions, which were often used by natives in South & Central America as a poison for their darts, giving them their nickname- the Poison Dart Frogs. However, only four of the 170 species have been observed being used in this way. Their fabulously bright colors has made them popular in zoos. In fact, their toxicity is derived from their diet of ants, mites & termites, so zoo-born frogs have no such poison. One species, the Dyeing Poison Dart Frog, will have its skin rubbed against the plucked skin of a parrot by natives- when the feathers regrow, they will turn the color of the frog!

-Poison Dart Frogs are extremely small and weak animals, but some of them have extremely powerful toxins on their skin (generally, the less colorful are the most dangerous). The Golden Poison Frog, the most dangerous of them, has enough toxin to kill ten or twenty men, or two African bull elephants! The poison is a powerful neurotoxin- one that saps strength immediately, giving it some medical uses as a muscle or heart relaxant. Darts covered in this toxic substance remain deadly for up to two years, and produce very quick deaths via paralysis. Differing frogs will have different levels of toxin- most aren't quite at +10 potency.

I thought it was the opposite. More colorful = more dangerous. They're colorful because they don't have to hide

Curiously, it appears not to be so, per Wikipedia:

“ Conspicuousness and toxicity may be inversely related, as polymorphic poison dart frogs that are less conspicuous are more toxic than the brightest and most conspicuous species.[34] Energetic costs of producing toxins and bright color pigments lead to potential trade-offs between toxicity and bright coloration,[35] and prey with strong secondary defenses have less to gain from costly signaling. Therefore, prey populations that are more toxic are predicted to manifest less bright signals, opposing the classical view that increased conspicuousness always evolves with increased toxicity.[36]”

-Caecilians are so freaking weird. Little-studied, they are amphibians that more closely resemble eyeless snakes or worms, being limbless, elongated creatures. About 1-5 feet long, they aren't very big, but are still predatory animals. They are burrowing animals that are usually hidden in the ground like giant worms, with similar "ringed" bodies. Most Caecilians live in the wet, tropical regions of South Asia and one part of Africa, while one family lives in South & Central America.

-Caecilians are slithering, burrowing animals that have poor vision- they can only tell dark from light and nothing else.

-The absolutely massive Koolasuchus is probably the most famous of the extinct amphibians. A 16-food monster that lived alongside the dinosaurs, it probably acted more like a crocodile than a salamander. The most recognizable part of it is its gigantic head, wider than it is long. It's about mid-tier for a Crocodile-type creature, weighing about half as much as a Nile Crocodile.

-Evolution be crazy- ask anyone what that thing above is and they'll say "Crocodile", or possibly "Gharial" if they know their crocs. Who on Earth would guess that thing was an ancient amphibian? Prionosuchus is easily the largest yet discovered- while the holotype specimen was smaller than a man, the longest ever found is apparently *30 feet long*, meaning these things would weigh tons. Its long, narrow snout implies it's a fish-feeder, as those structures are best-designed to catch and hold wriggly creatures, but otherwise they're extremely heavy hitters.

Birds

Post by Jabroniville »

BIRDS (Class: Aves):

-Birds have naturally long-held a good degree of fascination with people, owing to the fact that they could both fly and look magnificent while doing it (separating them from the ugly bats and insects, also winged creatures). The land-bound humans pretty much could only watch with envy until about a hundred years ago.

Birds contain 29 Orders (eight more than Mammals have), about 180 Families, and 9,000-ish Species. There is some great diversity amongst them, with several flightless varieties (including a bird larger than most people, and a super-tiny one from New Zealand ), flightless aquatic birds, waterfowl, Birds of Prey, assorted other predatory types, the wing-beatingest Hummingbirds and more. Their feathers go from drab to INSANE (the Birds of Paradise are especially notable), as do their beaks (Toucans grow impressively-huge bills). And they're the only creatures on the planet who can make the same sounds we can- the Parrotts (and surprisingly, some Corvids) can mimic our speech. Their calls are generally always loud.

So get ready for a big helping of boobies, tits, woodcocks and GREAT tits!

Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Hummingbirds are iconic for being the tiniest birds in the world, with the Bumblebee Hummingbird being the size of a dime. Their method of flight is actually extremely strange, especially for a creature with a backbone- they can hover in place, move up or down, or back and forth- things no other bird can do, because they can beat their wings at such great speeds. This comes with a metabolic cost, and so hummingbirds must consume vast amounts of high-sugar nectar, using long beaks and even longer tongues as they spend almost their entire day feeding. Like many such creatures, they can go into torpor and slow their metabolic rate to 1/15. The largest species is the Giant Hummingbird, which is only 9 inches long and still not even an ounce. They typically live for 3-5 years, but one lived to be at least twelve. There are about 338 known species.

-Most Hummingbirds are only 3-5 inches long, with the Bumblebee being 2 inches & 0.07 ounces! Their flight is bizarre because their wing speed is IMMENSE, going from 20 beats per second in larger species to 80 beats per second in the tiniest. They can still hit 34 mph in wind tunnels, though. They have almost no durability at all- birds in general are delicate, but something that weighs what a grain of rice does? Unlike most other birds, they have four cones of light-resception in their eyes, letting them see into the ultraviolet spectrum.

They have small, weak legs compared to other birds, and exist in about 100 different species. They mostly live in Europe & the Americas.

Passerines

Post by Jabroniville »

PASSERINES:
-More than half of all bird species are Passerines, notable for their perching feet- three toes in the front and one in the back. They are sometimes called Songbirds or Perching Birds. The group is fairly diverse, though stats up pretty similarly, as they are mostly small omnivores (eating fruit and spineless animals). The Thrushes, Robin, Bluebird, Blackbird, Cuckoo, Finch, Shrike, Crow & Raven are all Passerines. In all, there are 140 families and 6,500 identified species.

-The American Robin is a thrush named after the European Robin, though they are not closely related (the latter are Flycatchers of the Old World). Robins are distributed throughout all of North America, and are a symol of spring, migrating north during the spring and summer. This is apparently the most abundant bird in North America, with 370 million animals guessed. Like most thrushes, they eat beetle grubs, earthworms, caterpillars, fruits and berries- all "juicy", soft creatures. Various things have made them iconic- being one of the first birds to awaken and sing, they're probably the reason people say "The early bird gets the worm". Never mind the red breast- this makes them one of the easiest birds for even amateurs to recognize by sight. There are also phrases like "eyes bluer than robin's eggs" for their bright-blue eggshells.

-Robins are preyed upon by hawks, cats and snakes. Like most songbirds they are ultra-tiny and delicate, but adequate hunters.

SPARROWS: Extremely common birds throughout the world, especially the House Sparrow of Eurasia & Africa (so common it has an Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol based on it)- up to 10,000 can live in a single roost. Humorously, they were associated with lustfulness due to their readiness to mate, and their meat was considered an aphrodisiac. Quickly learned to cohabitate with humanity, making them extremely successful animals.
THRUSHES: Thrushes are passerines common to most areas, but are prevalent in North America. Few are famous aside from the iconic American Robin, and most have "Thrush" in their name. They are usually quite spindly.

BLUEBIRDS: Famous for their bright blue plumage. Seen throughout the Americas.

WRENS: Tiny little round balls of puff with short, pointy beaks. Mostly very plain-looking, brown birds, though New Zealand has some brightly-colored ones.

Image

FLYCATCHERS: Mostly found in the Old World. Insectivorous birds with long tails and loud songs.
BULBULS: African. Many have Cardinal-like crests on their heads.
WHIPBIRDS: Australian birds, looking similar to Bulbuls.
GNATEATERS: Tiny & colorful South American bug-eaters.
ANTBIRDS: South American.
BERRYPECKERS & LONGBILLS: Very long-beaked tiny birds.
DRONGOS: Hilariously-named all-black Asian birds with long tails. They are known to be fearless, frequently mobbing larger attackers en masse. Their preying on bees makes them a nuisances to beekeepers. The term "Drongo" came to be Australian slang for idiot after a racehorse that was named after one of these constantly failed to win races despite repeatedly placing.

BROADBILLS: Brightly-colored birds that live in dense canopies, thus still allowing them stealth. Mostly Southeast Asian.
PITOHUI: New Guinean relatives to Orioles. Often part-red.
ORIOLES (Old World): Old-World birds from Africa & Asia.
ORIOLES (New World): North American Orioles, actually part of the Blackbird family. Known for their distinctive black and bright-yellow plumage, the gave their name to Baltimore's baseball team.
BOWERBIRDS: Males build very large, elaborate nests from brightly-colored materials. The longest-living passerines, up to 26 years. From New Guinea & Australia.
SWALLOWS: One of the most far-reaching animals, hitting every continent (including sometimes Antarctica!). They have very narrow, long bodies with similar wings, allowing them great maneuverability as they hunt on the wing.
LARKS: Mostly African, but with one species each in North America & Australia. The generic term "lark" is often given to the Eurasian Skylark, which has the largest spread (across all of Eurasia).
WARBLERS: Well-known songbirds, but kind of a "wastebasket" taxon of a bunch of stuff people couldn't place.
THRASHERS: Mostly brown, North American birds.

Image

MOCKINGBIRDS: Famous for their mimicry of the calls of other birds, and sometimes amphibians & mammals, often doing so loudly and in succession.
NUTHATCHES: Known for loud, simple songs and black eye-stripes. Named for their ability to dig small crevaces and place nuts and other food items in them for storage.

Image

SUNBIRDS: African birds who mostly feed on nectar, giving them many Hummingbird-like adaptations like bright colors and long beaks. Will often feed spiders to their young, though.
WEAVERS: Famous for their incredibly-complicated, woven nests.
QUELEAS: Types of weavers, the Quelea is actually the most populous wild bird in the world, with 1.5 million living in Africa, where they are a significant danger to crops, as flocks number in the thousands and descend onto grains like a rolling cloud.
FINCHES: Round, colorful birds known for their short, broad nut-cracking beaks. They have become very popular as pets.

Image

CANARY: Wild Atlantic Canaries are a kind of finch, and have led to the modern domesticated Canary, which is often bred in different colors. Famous for their ability to detect carbon monoxide poisoning in mines- if it was enough to kill a canary, then the men working knew that it was going to be dangerous for them, and so they'd leave. This practice only stopped in 1986! This led to the popular phrase "Canary in the Coal Mine" for the first sign that something was going wrong. They are famous throughout pop culture- both Tweety Bird & Big Bird are canaries.
