-The enormous Short-Faced Bear (similar to the Cave Bear) is a thankfully-extinct super-predator that may have hunted down our ancestors. As if the sight of something that stood a head taller than a frickin' Kodiak Bear wasn't terrifying enough. It's raw power gives in full-on PL 10 stats, though like most bears, it's still cheaper than the more-versatile Cats. Bears are all about overwhelming power and ferocity, and would probably take the majority of fights against a similar-level Big Cat. They're THAT tough. And this guy is the King of the Mountain.

-One of D&D's more-famous "Dire" Animals, the Dire Bear was at the top of the list, and one of the most powerful creatures under the "Animal" classification. However, it was still easily-killed by a mid-level party of guys, which I think is a little funny, given how dangerous an Elephant-sized Bear would be in real life. This version is a full PL 10 character that fits what a Powerhouse SUPERHERO would be like.

Would Marvel's Ursa (Major) be at the level of this Dire Bear?

In terms of raw power, it's actually pretty close. Comparing D&D to Marvel Comics is a bit odd since there's a weird power differential (a "normal guy" can hit Level 20 in D&D, and most Marvel heroes are way more powerful than a D&D Wizard... until those guys hit "One-Word Kill" spells).

-"Bear Dog" is the name given to the family Amphicyonidae, an extinct carnivore type from the Eocene-Miocene eras. They were among the first carnivorans to evolve a large body size, and seem to pre-date the modern canine or ursine forms- both of which arrived and probably outcompeted them, spelling their doom. Some were tiny (11 lbs.), while others could be anywhere from 110-1,704 lbs., meaning there was a lot of variability. Their diet is likely bear-like, as they could eat many different kinds of things, and their feet seemed to go from digitigrade (dog-like) to plantigrade (human/bear-like) positions over the centuries.

-I mostly kept a Black Bear's stats here, though some species could be larger or smaller depending.

Pinnipeds

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

PINNIPEDIA FAMILY (Order- Carnivora):
-The Pinnipeds are a well-known family of carnivores, but generally not liked as much as most other big sea animals (Whales, Sharks, Squid) because they're generally less-cool- most of them are big, fat things that are either very cute or very ugly. Their size makes them an ideal prey species for hungry large oceanic predators, which further detracts from their "cool" quotient- carnivores like Lions & Bears aren't victimized by other predators- they're at the TOP of their food chains. I mean, "Order- Carnivora" implies bad-ass power.

That said, not everything in this family is a victimized weenie of an animal. Though the entire family is large (the smaller species weight 200 lbs., and the vast majority are well over 500 lbs.), the kings of the family, the Walrus & Elephant Seal, are MONSTERS and not to be trifled with. In fact, the Elephant Seal is the largest animal of THE ENTIRE Carnivora Order. Oh, and for the record, the differences between Seals and Sea Lions: True Seals have no external ears and have back-flippers that point backwards. Eared Seals (Sea Lions & Fur Seals) can rotate their back flippers to face forwards (making them far superior on land than earless seals), and have small external ears. Then there's Walruses, which are separate.

Pinnipeds are so useless on land compared to in the water that I stopped relying solely "Favored Environment" and went with a full-on Limited Enhanced package of stats- boosting FIGHTING & Dodge dramatically so long as they're in the water. The creatures are so ungainly on land that most have zero defenses against anything there. Their only real advantages there is that the worst of their predators are stymied by the land even worse than they are, and they have the sheer size, numbers, and bite to deal with most things that can get to them there (such as wolves or coyotes). Sea Lions are much more capable on land, so the differences in stats are far less pronounced.

Seals have greater endurance and can dive up to four times deeper than Sea Lions & Fur Seals, but usually aren't as good at attacking.

its funny that you think theyre useless on land and seeing them waddle about would support that

but then you see two elephant seals going at it ramming 1000+ pound bodies into each other and you want to curl up into a hole somewhere till theyre done.

Size: Up to 6.5 feet long (110-160 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Large pods.
Diet: Fish
Tactics: Surprise with bites from all angles, fleeing from predators.

-Three species of Seals, all related, make up the tiniest members of the family. At only 150-ish pounds, they are weaker than many people and pose no threat to humans. I made them PL 1.5 fighters who are PL 2 to parry and PL 2.5 to dodge, making them the weakest of the Seal types.

Tiny Seals:
Image

BAIKAL SEAL: Baikal Seals hail from a single lake in Siberia, from which they derive their name. It is the only exclusively-freshwater pinniped species. It's unclear how exactly they found the lake- perhaps Lake Baikal was attached to the sea at some point in the past.

Image

CASPIAN SEAL: These are found in the Caspian Sea, and are fairly endangered shallow divers. Sea Eagles, Wolves, and even the canine distemper disease reduce their numbers greatly.

RINGED SEAL: One of the primary prey species of the Polar Bear & Killer Whale, these are the smallest Arctic seals, and are very common throughout their wide range. Some can weight up to 300 lbs., but most are much smaller.

Tactics: Surprise with bites from all angles, fleeing from predators.

-These are slightly larger seals, weighing around 200 lbs. each. They're closer to PL 3 overall, but are ungainly enough on land to pose little threat to humans.

Small Seals:
Image

RIBBON SEAL: Ribbon Seals are named for the circular ringed markings on their bodies, which make them look like they have the skin disorder vitiligo- these develop after about four years of age. They hail from Arctic regions, notably around the Bering Sea. They are hunted by Great White Sharks & Killer Whales, but on land, appear to have little experience with predators- humans are able to get very close to them, and mothers leave their calves for long periods of time without a care. They rarely leave icy conditions, and have a unique method of locomotion for pinnipeds- they undulate like snakes, pulling themselves along with their claws.

Image

SPOTTED SEAL: Also from the Bering Sea, along with other northern Pacific waters, it is found around Alaska, Japan, Russia, and other such places. They are closely related to Harbor Seals, which sometimes overlap with them in certain habitats. They typically weigh between 180-240 lbs. Unlike Ribbon Seals, they are very shy and are hard for humans to approach.

So the set on Seals ended up becoming ENORMOUSLY more elaborate than I anticipated- in many cases, the males & females are so different I had to build them separately, resulting in something like 30+ unique Seal builds... all with largely similar stats, just upgraded in different places, lol. Because not only are Seals & Sea Lions very numerous in terms of species, but there's a lot of variants within based off of whether or not the males have to fight for dominance!

Encounter Groups: Large pods.
Diet: Fish

-Also known as the Common Seal, the Harbors are among the smaller species, and most common (and the most widespread overall). Several subspecies exist, one of which lives in the fresh waters of Quebec. They're not terribly powerful, but maintain a half-decent PL. PL 2.5-3 is about even with the Coyotes or household dogs of the world, which sounds about right for an animal that's usually heavier than most people, but isn't a terribly great fighter. You've got to have an accurate bite to catch fish in mid-swim, after all.

-Note, however, that like other Seals, it's packing Favored Environment, which gives a +2 boost to either attack or both defenses each turn. This effectively makes the Seals PL 3 on offense or PL 4 on defense when underwater (but doesn't count against their Power Level). Animals that exist in both water and on land should have this Advantage, in my opinion- it boosts them a bit, and properly reflects how much worse their fighting is on land- there's a reason most humans hunt them there (aside from the fact that we suck in water).
