Technically, the appearances mean nothing- it's based off of family lineages. Porpoises are a group that's closer to Belugas & Narwhals, and it's a relatively small grouping. Most of the round-headed dolphins are just that- Dolphins.

The Oceanic Dolphin Family includes several round-headed dolphins, including the Killer Whale, False Killer Whale, Irrawaddy Dolphin, and more.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 22--8 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 13 (54)

-Belugas look pretty sweet. They're some of the purest white things ever- groups of them numbering in the hundreds during mating season look absolutely INCREDIBLE. They're more populous than most whale species, but are endangered in some areas- but generally they're well-off. They're part of the same family as the Narwhal, and can interbreed. Sometimes called "Sea Canaries" for their high-pitched voices, they are among the most popular cetacean species in aquariums, as they are charismatic and graceful, with a facial expression that resembles smiling. They have the most pronounced foreheads of any of the smaller toothed whales, and unfused vertebrae in their necks, allowing them to turn their heads in ways other cetaceans can't. They are also the only cetaceans who can swim backwards, though they are among the slowest swimmers in the Order.

-Belugas are important to the Arctic ecosystem- as the most numerous toothed whales in the region, they eat a huge variety of fish and invertebrates. They are much longer and heavier than any dolphins save the Orca, but still only fight fish, and are preyed upon by both Orcas and Polar Bears- the latter will wait for Belugas trapped away from open water and drag them up onto the ice to eat them- a 180kg bear was seen killing a 980kg Beluga this way. Belugas can brered with Narwhals, their closest relatives.

-Belugas use virtually the same stats as the Narwhal, but lose a PL offensively thanks to their lack of major weapons (they don't attack things larger than small fish or squid on a regular basis).

Belugas are quiet intelligent. The ones we saw at the aquarium a few years ago seemed to be quite aware of why everyone was there and were definitely hamming it up for the people as they swam by the windows.

I saw a show about zoos during the pandemic lockdown, many of the animals were negatively effected by the lack of interaction with the public. They miss the enrichment that comes from the attention the visitors give them.

Encounter Groups: Small to large pods (5-50)
Diet: Crustaceans, mollusks, fish
Tactics: Duel with large tusks, suck up small prey using powerful lips & mouth.

-Looking at the Narwhal, it's not hard to see how people could mistake their tusks for the horns of some magnificent land-creature. Of course, finding these horns are probably what led to the Unicorn myth in the first place. Narwhals are fairly large Toothed Whales, living in extremely cold Arctic Waters, and are most famous for their tusks, which are really just bizarre teeth that have grown straight out. This is only found in males, and only one tooth grows out that way... except when it doesn't. See, there's variants all over the place, and many examples of females with tusks, males with TWO tusks, and even one case of a FEMALE with two tusks! Said tusks can grow 5-10 feet long, and grow throughout the animal's life, which can be up to 50 years.

-Narwhals don't use their tusks for fighting- current evidence seems to suggest that the tusks are filled with millions of nerve endings, and situations where males push and prod against each other's tusks may be communicative in nature (though this doesn't explain why females don't have them- unless other theories of them being signs of male health are accurate), but an Elite version just may well attack other creatures with it. It's only PL 6, like the Bottlenose Dolphin, but is quite strong, doing +8 damage- these things are pretty tough, but can be readily killed by skilled humans using harpoons from a kayak. Note that they earn direct Immunities, not halfsies, because of their absolutely HUGE dives, and their living in the coldest waters on Earth.

-I've actually been interested in the "Middle Ground" Whales lately. Everyone knows the Dolphins and the Orcas, but there's actually a pretty hefty group in the middle. The False Killer Whales & Pilot Whales (slightly larger but slower) are really quite cool. These guys gain their name from being, well, pretty darn close to the actual Killer Whale in appearance, just lacking the white parts, not to mention ten feet and about TEN TONS OF WEIGHT. But really, that can be enough to confuse people when you're in the water and have no concept or how big things are with nothing to compare them to visually (a similar effect likely causes sea monster sightings).

-False Killer Whales are large, impressive hunters, and are a bit beyond even PL 7. Still cheaper than the brilliant Dolphins, though.

-Pilot Whales are the second-largest of the dolphins, behind only the Killer Whale. Absolutely massive, these dark animals can actually interbreed with smaller dolphins, producing "Wholpins". There are Long-Finned and Short-Finned Pilot Whales, with the latter residing in warmer waters. Most Pilot Whales primarily eat squid, and can be preyed upon by Killer Whales. They are among the cetaceans most likely to strand on beaches in massive numbers (often 100-500 animals are beached this way)- this is probably due to their extremely strong social bonds and communicative nature, which will lead tons of animals to follow the leader to their doom, and even return to the beach once freed by helpful humans.

-Pilot Whales are about the same as False Killer Whales in terms of stats.

Range: Nearly all world waterways
Stereotypes: Friendly, intelligent, docile creatures.

-And yup, it's the Killer Whale, the mighty apex predator of the seas, capable of bringing down almost anything. Until man invented guns, there was no more perfect predator on the face of the Earth.

-Groups of these things (they're called "The Wolves of the Sea" for a reason) can bring down BLUE WHALES (they eat only the meaty tongue), and even solitary, they're lethal fighters. When fighting Blue Whales, they will work in groups of up to fifty, taking turns attempting to drown the whales- one group replacing another when they become exhausted. They've been observed killing Sea Lions via either knocking ice floes over into the waiting teeth of it's allies, or by deliberately BEACHING ITSELF, taking a massive sliding dive onto a poor sea mammal sitting on the shoreline, then bounding back into the water when the tide swishes back seconds later. Several have even learned the secrets of WAVE PHYSICS of all things, combining their wakes into forming floe-crushing super-waves, leaving animals helpless before them. They have even preyed upon swimming Moose and Great White Sharks. They're so frightening to animals that playing Orca noises is one of the ways to get sharks to leave an area.

-There's been a great effort over the decades to reduce the "Killer" aspect of it's name- they're not usually dangerous to humans, and are rather fascinated and curious of it. Even so, you've got to be careful around something that can weigh eleven tons- it can kill you by accident, and aggressive males have caused deaths before. Look at that recent Sea World incident (and inspiration for the SeaWorld-breaking movie Blackfish). They are BIG and can cause a hell of a lot of damage- in the open water, few animals could make even a rudimentary defense.

-Killer Whales fit into three different categories- Resident (which stay in one area and have much larger, more close-knit pods and eat fish and squid), Transient (which travel around, mostly eating sea mammals), and Offshore (the smallest group, which travels far out in search of fish, then returns). Resident pods can have up to four generations in their matrilineal groups, as females can reach 90 years of age. No animal preys upon the Killer Whale, making them true apex predators in the ocean, as they'll take shots at anything else in it, short of adult male Blue & Sperm Whales, which are not believed to be targets (probably being too large and/or ferocious).

-Killer Whales are PL 9.5, being as strong and tough as Elephants, but pack even more accuracy thanks to their undersea speed. These things practically define power, and are extremely-capable mass predators, being able to take out nearly anything, especially in larger numbers. How bad-ass are they? Aside from the aforementioned feats, one of the surefire ways to deter sharks of any kind is to play Orca Song in the nearby area. That's right, even GREAT WHITE SHARKS would not screw with these things in a million years.

Beaked Whales

Post by Jabroniville »

BEAKED WHALES:
-These animals are so freaking weird to me- you'd think a 32-foot long mammal that looks like a huge Bottlenose Dolphin would be famous, but these are all rather obscure. Beaked Whales vary a lot in size, but most are less-studied than most cetaceans. Almost all the males in this group fight, typically with pronounced teeth, often 2-4 in number.

-Bottlenose Whales look like some kind of bizarre hybrid between a Bottlenose Dolphin and a Beluga Whale. It's 33 feet long, chubby and with a Dolphin's head, but is mottled white and grey. Northern & Southern subspecies exist, and are closely related despite most of the planet separating them (they're on each pole)- the Southern variety is closer to 25 feet long.

-The Bottlenose Whale is a bit stronger, but much less accurate than a False Killer Whale. They aren't elite hunters, but are still extremely big and strong.
