greycrusader wrote: Wed Apr 28, 2021 1:49 am I'm curious...how do you see Invincible's major stories working out in your universe? Omni-Man and the other Viltrumites don't pose nearly the same threat in a world with Superman, Thor, Wonder Woman, the Hulk, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Captain Marvel (either of them), and so on; even the X-Men (given how psi-heavy their members are) would stymie their efforts. The Kirkman Invincible universe frankly was full of punch or blast types, with just about none in the class of the Viltrumites, except for Robot's genius technology. Your setting has quite a few super-heavyweights, along with loads of heroes and villains whose offbeat powers would bypass Omni-Man and company's conventional invulnerability. So the Omni-Man murder mystery, the invasion angle, the legion of evil Invincibles...none of those really work as they did in the comics.

Again, just wondering your thoughts.

All my best.
I've been struggling with that for a while, actually. If you look at my Invincible-verse builds so far, I've kept their stories and backgrounds pretty high level for just that reason. I'll have to commit some thought to it. The Viltrumites in my setting would have lots of rivals as you note so some major adjustments to those events are required.

Special Attack [Magma Stream +9, Area Line]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +8 [DC18] Parry +8 [DC18]
Toughness +4 (+3 without Defensive Roll), Fortitude +6, Will +4

COMPLICATIONS:
Accident: Magmaniac has to be careful where he activates his plasma form, or he can melt right through a floor or something else jobber-like.
Motivation: Money and respect.
Relationships: He is best friends with Tether Tyrant.
Reputation: Loser villain.
Vulnerable: He's vulnerable to cold or water based effects, taking an extra degree of failure against them.

Abilities 34 + Skills 11 (22 ranks) + Advantages 1 + Powers 86 + Defenses 15 = 147 / 147

Build Comments: Magmaniac is similar to Furnace, but without the power armor and a lot more jobbery. I almost made him PL8 since he has done some serious jobber stuff in his time, but I left him where he is for now. In his first appearance, he took himself out by activating his magma aura and melting through the floor. Funny stuff.

Later on, he got one punched by Bulletproof/Invincble II, I think. And then he finally met his demise later on, setting off his best friend Tether Tyrant and allowing him to fully submit to his symbiote and becoming a serious threat. All in all, a fine career for a crappy villain like him but in my setting, he’s still alive, so he can keep jobbin’.

Secret Origins: Nobody knows the true identity or the origin of the villian Magmaniac. He began his criminal career seven years ago with a series of deadly robberies and has left a trail of molten destruction in his wake ever since.

The Story so Far: The "human volcano" specializes in robbing banks by burning through vault doors. Magmaniac is a ruthless criminal, responsible for the deaths of security guards, bank tellers, armored car drivers and innocent witnesses. After incinerating an entire police SWAT team in Houston, Texas, Magmaniac caught the attention of the spectacularly unsuccessful villian group The Masters of Terror. He was recruited by the Masters, but within weeks was stewing in a special prison cell after a botched heist. Fortunately for him, Magmaniac was teleported out of his holding cell by Isotope, the right-hand man of the crimelord Machine Head. Magmaniac began working as a bodyguard for Machine Head shortly before a decisive battle with the Guardians of the Globe and Invincible. During the fight, Magmaniac was defeated by the miniature hero Shrinking Ray. Once again Magmaniac languished in a special cell, unable to use his deadly magma powers - for now.

After being released from prison along with Tether Tyrant; both men tried to live the normal civilian life and trying not to commit any crimes. However, realizing that the normal life does not suit them they decided to go back to their old ways. After their fight with Invincible, they joined with Titan and went to their old boss, Machine Head to take him down.

Characterization: Magmaniac a career jobber villain with a mean streak, but lacks the intelligence to be a true threat.

Friends and Foes: His closest friend was Tether Tyrant and he had great dislike for Invincible after his defeats at his hands.

Comments: Atom Eve is one of the main characters in Invincible. They start out as crime-fighting friends but become more and it’s a well-done transition. She is a very powerful character, with the ability to change anything into anything. At first, she didn’t really do THAT much with it, but as time has gone on, she’s gotten more and more powerful, even bringing herself back to life after getting gutted by an angry Viltrumite that Mark was fighting.

Secret Origins: Samantha Eve Wilkins was born to Erias Brandyworth and an unnamed mother. During her birth, her powers would emit out of control, often emitting pink energy through her mother’s eyes. Her mother did not survive the birth process, but Samantha did. In order to use her as a weapon, Steven Erickson went to the hospital of her birth to retrieve her. Brandyworth faked Samantha’s death by using the miscarried fetus of Betsy Wilkins and Adam Wilkins, not allowing Erickson to fulfill his mission. Betsy and Adam Wilkins would become her new adoptive parents.

The Story so Far: Through her childhood, she would see her father, Brandyworth, watching her from a distance. Her first word was CH2OH, which is the chemical group of hydroxymethyl. During her toddler years, she would demonstrate core excellency in the field of science by helping a babysitter with his homework. She would also be admitted into a school for young scholars, but later kicked out because she wasn’t fulfilling their standards. After a brief argument with her father, her mom would deliver her a meal of chicken, much to her disgust. It is then she discovers her powers of transmutation by turning her meal into a cheeseburger. She would practice her powers on various objects such a baseball bat, clothes, etc. She would make her crime-fighting debut when attacking animal thief and meet with her father for the first time. Brandyworth reveals to her that she has her transmutation powers because of him and she was going to be a weapon for the US government. He also reveals that him falling in love with her real mother caused him to not allow Samantha to be a weapon. He warns Samantha not to use her powers in public out of fear that she may attract the government’s attention. She flies off, not paying attention to what he told her. Years later, she would engage in a battle with a villain named Killcannon. She would don a mask and call herself Atom Eve. Brandyworth would appear again to warn Samantha again, but she rebuffs him by saying that she is wearing a mask.

For high school, Eve attended Reginald Vel Johnson High School. Battling Killcannon again, she would encounter Rex Sloan. Killcannon gets back up and the duo stops him. Rex introduces himself and asks Eve for advice on his mission. Eve asks Rex to stay the night and they go to bed. She would wake up the next morning with Rex heading to the Pentagon. Rex would arrive back to Eve’s room and reveal that he killed Radcliffe and destroyed the house he lived in. Eve comforts him, but panics because the government will likely salvage what’s left. They arrive on the scene notice that Steven Erickson is salvaging the scene. They head into the area and commence battle with the government officials. Eve draws their fire and Rex attempts to destroy the building. He does so by touching the pipe to the building. Erickson attempts to recruit Rex but Rex refuses, stating he only needs Eve. They kiss and escape to Art Rosenbaum’s shop. After a comment Rex makes, Eve storms out and mentions that Erickson killed her real father. They make up and head to Eve’s house. She makes Rex food. Afterwards, Rex leaves and Eve finds out that he is going to kill his parents. She arrives to him, noticing he decided against it and they walk away. Next, they would stop a Lizard League operation.

Later, Eve and Rex join the Teen Team, a group of teenage superheroes led by Robot. While fighting the super-villains known as the Mauler Twins, Eve and the other members of the Teen Team met another teenage superhero named Invincible (Mark Grayson). The next day, she finds out that Mark also attends her school.[3]

Afterwards, Eve would go on a job with Rex and investigate later students at her school being turn into human bombs. After a while, Robot reveals that it is her physics teacher, David Hiles. David attempts to kill Mark and Eve by turning himself into a bomb, but Mark flies him to Antarctica to stop him. Eve would hear about Robot trying out for the Guardians of the Globe. That night, he notices that Rex has cheated on her with Dupli-Kate. She flies to Mark’s house and tells Mark about it. From there, she quits the Teen Team. Mark comforts her until they are interrupted by Mark’s mother.

Eve would team up with Invincible and also do solo missions. Eve would fly in to see Rex with Dupli-Kate, knowing their history. Mark and Eve would go to stop a Lizard League operation. Robot arrives to ask if Eve wants to join the Guardians of the Globe. She flies off upset. Around the time of night, Eve came to see Mark, but sees him with Amber Bennett. Eve flies away, disappointed.

Eve would go to Mark and see William doing the same thing. She finds out that Williams knows about Mark’s identity as well. Eve goes to Robot to see if he can get an idea on Mark’s location. Robot accepts and she flies off. Eve learns that Mark will be in action soon and the Guardians and her attempt to stop an invasion by extradimensional aliens. The Flaxans retreat after their advanced aging is discovered. Robot thanks Eve and Mark and they would leave. The next day, William reveals that Eve and him are dating to Mark. Eve assist the Guardians in another mission in stopping another invasion. The aliens retreat and they head home. The invasion causes graduation to be pushed backward. William would ask Eve if she can fly and she would take him flying, much to her annoyance. Next, Mark would assist Eve in clearing debris from the invasion. Eve and William would have a double date with Mark and Amber, worried that Mark is a drug dealer. The duo laugh until Mark arrives. Mark arrives late to graduation and Winslow announces the graduates and his retirement. Annoyed by William, she decides to break up with him.

She arrives to Mark’s room, much to his confusion. She decides to quit being a superhero. Mark asks why and she reveals that her powers can be used better than fighting crime. She decides to go to Africa to hugs Mark. Eve wants to tell Mark that she likes him, but hesitates and leaves. Eve would head to Africa and help the local villagers with her powers as such turning the barren land into fertile land. Eve’s retirement would be short lived. Eve would help the Guardians and other superhero factions as when a being named Omnipotus invaded, renouncing her retirement. They attempt to stop him until Black Samson arrives, getting his powers back after his coma. Eve would later give Mark her location in Africa, hoping to see him. She notices that Amber came along. Mark would tell her his story of meeting his father, battling the Viltrumites and his brother, much to her surprise. Mark and Eve stop a stampede of animals and stopped for a meal with Amber. Mark leaves early after receiving a threatening phone call from a stranger. Eve takes Amber home and notices that Mark’s house is destroyed from his battle with Levy. They see Mark, relieved that he is still alive. Mark would go see Eve and they embrace. They kiss, much to both their surprise. Mark and Eve are called on a job to stop a parasitic race named the Sequids. Cecil Stedman sends Black Samson, Robot, Monster Girl, The Immortal, Invincible, and Eve to intercept the Sequids. The Sequids living through a human host, Rus Livingston and they fire at the US space shuttle. Eve forms a bubble for those who can’t breathe in space. She seals a hole in the Martian spaceship and the Martians decide to aid them. Robot emits a pulse to get the Sequid away from them, but they overwhelm them. Eve puts up a force field while Robot tries to admit another pulse, but is overwhelmed by the Sequid closing in. Afterwards, the Guardians would succeed and escape from the Martians attempting to execute Shapesmith for betraying them. She would go to see Rex Splode after his near-death experience by the Lizard League. Rex reveals to that Mark and Amber are no longer together. He heads to Mark’s dorm and asks Mark where they stand on their relationship. Eve reveals he liked him while she was with Rex and that her time in Africa has made her miss him more. Mark tells Eve that he knew already because an alternate, older version of Eve told him how she felt about him. Eve asks how Mark feels about her before her alternate version revealed her feelings for him, with Mark being unsure. She leaves to Africa before Mark could explain further. Mark goes to see Eve until Cecil asks for their help in stopping Doctor Seismic. Eve is knocked unconscious for a short time until she is imprisoned by Sesmic. They are saved by the Reanimen and Darkwing II. After the battle, Mark tells Eve that he knows Cecil covered up Darkwing’s incident in Midnight City and decided to get some answers. Afterwards, Mark reveals to Eve that after Cecil found his weakness, he was thinking about Eve. Eve grabs his hand and they kiss, symbolizing the start of their intimate relationship.

Characterization: Atom Eve has the power to manipulate and restructure matter at the sub-atomic level by sheer willpower. As long as she knows how something is made up she can change it into something else and since she was created with a great understanding of chemistry and the molecular structure of things as well as an innate knowledge of every law of science, her abilities are only limited by her imagination. She truly wants to make the world a better place and often wonders if being a superhero is the best way to do it.

Friends and Foes: She has a complicated history with her parents. She is in love with Mark Grayson, Invincible.

b]Build Comments:[/b] So with my current PL structure, I wanted to keep all my martial artist type builds between PL9-11 for the top tier, with Batman being the exception, but not necessarily because of his martial skill. Shang-Chi comes in at PL11 with a +18 Unarmed with a few ranks of Improved Critical to give him some extra oomph in damage, making him more than a match for other PL11&10’s like Iron Fist, Liu Kang and others. He can even stunt some other nasty things off his Chi array to even the odds with the more mystical martial artists, too.

And the trailer has me so #@*$&# hyped, I can’t wait for the movie.

Secret Origins: Shang-Chi, who's name can be interpreted as "a rising and advancing spirit" was born in Hunan province in China, son to a wealthy international crime lord named The Mandarin and an unknown American woman genetically selected by his father. Trained privately by the greatest masters of various disciplines, Chinese and otherwise, Shang had limited contact with his parents. When he did see his father, his father told him that all of his training was being directed toward some sort of great humanitarian goal, as his father manipulated Shang into thinking that he was a philanthropist.

When it finally came time for Shang to face the outside world and carry out this mission, he was transported to London, England, where his mission was assassination. He knew nothing other than to honor his father with complete loyalty, so after stealthily sneaking into his target's home, he killed who he thought was an evil man in one swift strike. British secret agent Sir Dennis Nayland-Smith arrived on the scene in time to catch Shang, but of course couldn't keep him there. Shang later sought out his mother, now living in London, who then told him the truth about her former husband’s life of crime and evil. At that time, Shang swore to become his father's enemy, and do whatever it would take to topple his evil empire.

The Story so Far: Shang-Chi battled Midnight, and then first met his close ally Black Jack Tarr. Shangi-Chi became an ally of Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and opposed The Mandarin, and battled the Si-Fan assassins.

Over the years he teamed with many heroes and opposed many villains. He went against his father and his hirelings several times until he finally witnessed the (alleged) death of The Mandarin. Not long after his father's death, Shang-Chi quit Freelance Restorations, forsook his life as an adventurer, and retired to remote Yang-Tin, China, to live as a fisherman.

However, The Mandarin survived and after making a move on Wayne Enterprises, Shang-Chi returned from his retirement to assist Batman in taking him down.

Characterization: Shang Chi is one of the greatest martial artists who has ever lived, having been born and trained to be the ultimate warrior. Shang Chi is a grandmaster of various martial arts from around the world with a particular specialization in Chinese martial arts such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Wushu, Tai Chi Chuan, Hung Gar, Pa Kua, Tsing Yi, Preying Mantis, Cannon Fist, Long Fist, Eagle Claw, Lohan Boxing, Buddhist Fist, Choi Li Fut, Tiger Fist/Dragon Fist, Monkey Kung Fu, and Drunken Fist.

Friends and Foes: He is constantly on the lookout for his many half-brothers and sisters from his father. He has many allies in the superhero community, particularly Spider-Man and Batman

Abilities 82 + Skills 29 (58 ranks) + Advantages 24 + Powers 8 + Defenses 13 = 156 / 156

Build Comments: Even though Sub Zero and Scorpion are the biggest stars of the MK franchise, the heart of the series is Liu Kang. The initial champion of the first tournament we get to see and he main hero of both continuities, he is the fighter all the rest are measured against. He's not as flashy as much of the roster but he always plays well and usually is in the top tier in every game he's in.

Secret Origins: Orphaned as a child, Liu Kang was taken in by the Order of Light's Shaolin Temple, hidden in the mountains of Honan Province in China. Trained in the teachings of the Great Kung Lao, Liu Kang's talent in the martial arts caught the attention of Lord Raiden. Raiden saw Earthrealm's last hope in the young warrior monk, and took Liu Kang to see the legendary Outworld master of martial arts, Bo' Rai Cho to further the young Shaolin's development. After several years Liu Kang's training was complete, and then he was enrolled into the top secret White Lotus Society, an order of warriors created by Raiden to defend the Earthrealm.

The Story so Far: As the tenth generation of the Mortal Kombat Tournament approached, Liu Kang was summoned by Shaolin Grandmaster Wu, and was sent by the Temple of Light to defeat Shang Tsung. He desired to defeat Shang Tsung and bring the tournament back to its Shaolin owners. As he made his way to the tournament, he met and became friends with movie star Johnny Cage and Special Forces agent Sonya Blade. At the time of Liu Kang's entry, Outworld had won nine Mortal Kombat tournaments in a row. It is unknown which opponents Kang fought throughout the tournament, but he eventually earned the right to challenge Goro, the current Champion of Mortal Kombat. By exploiting the Shokan's overconfidence, Liu Kang defeated Goro and became the new Champion. Upon hearing of Goro's defeat, Shang Tsung challenged him. After an epic battle, Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung with his Flying Kick, taught to him by Bo' Rai Cho. Shang Tsung's defeat caused the island to self-destruct. Liu Kang then returned home as the new Mortal Kombat Champion.

Coming home from Tsung's Island, he found many of his Shaolin brothers killed in a vicious attack by a Tarkatan horde. Enraged, Liu Kang decided to travel to Outworld, backed by fellow White Lotus member and spiritual brother Kung Lao, Raiden, Sub-Zero (the younger brother of the original Sub-Zero, who was killed by Scorpion), and Smoke to seek revenge. Before he traveled to Outworld, Liu Kang went to Hollywood to seek Johnny Cage's help.

Luckily, Liu Kang arrived at the right time as Cage was being attacked by a Tarkatan horde. Now joined with Johnny as well as Sonya's superior Jax Briggs, they finally traveled to Outworld. At the tournament, he and Kung Lao met Kitana, and Liu Kang began to fall in love with her. He eventually learned the true nature of the Outworld tournament, but competed anyway. While it is unclear as to what matches took place, it is known that Liu Kang fought Shao Kahn, eventually defeating the emperor. It is likely that he faced Kintaro and Shang Tsung as well, overpowering the latter once more despite his youth and renewed powers, and this time right in front of Shao Kahn himself. Unable to accept defeat, Kahn ordered his forces to destroy the Earthrealm warriors, forcing them to return home and prepare for the coming invasion.

After returning to Earthrealm, Liu Kang, along with Kung Lao, began training a new generation of Shaolin warriors, only to be interrupted when the invasion began. As Kahn's extermination squads were sent to kill Earth's chosen warriors, Liu Kang found himself as the primary target. Kung Lao went against Shao Kahn and was seemingly killed by a powerful blast from the emperor. Enraged, Liu Kang challenged Kahn to Mortal Kombat and defeated him once again, causing the emperor and his forces to retreat back to Outworld. The souls that Kahn had stolen were set free, and just before the portal closed, Liu Kang was thanked by Kitana for his part in saving both Earth and her own realm from Shao Kahn.

Characterization: Liu Kang is one of Earthrealm's greatest warriors, having defeated many to prove his valor. Liu Kang has found a nemesis in the traitorous Shang Tsung, a sorcerer who he has defeated on numerous occasions. He is often considered the greatest threat to the plans of Shang and his emperor, Shao Kahn. He is a member of the White Lotus Society and trains extensively at the Wu Shi Academy.

Friends and Foes: He is closest to Kung Lao and Raiden and has many friends with the Earthrealm champions community.

Comments Fighting game Liu is a PL10, which is top for non-bosses. He's really not that different from the other versions but it is a little less skilled than my main version.

Is it ever explained where supers come from? I mean, in terms of their powers. In WildStorm, a huge number of metahumans had Kherubim blood. Marvel’s has mutants, Inhumans and so on. What about the Invincibleverse?

Ah. I prefer tighter, more coherent origins, for supers. But that’s just a personal preference.
