Background: Ronald Piers was a British archeologist who discovered an obsidian mirror while on a dig in South America, the moment he touched it he became possessed and transformed by the unknown entity that had been trapped inside the mirror. The entity was obsessed with the nature of duality and balance and sought to resume its pursuit of those ideals, beginning with Piers' dig crew and they were the first to fall victim to him. It was during that event that the entity learned of superheroes, people who seemingly represented the best virtues of human nature and was immediately fascinated with testing them.

Now calling himself Abraxas, he roams across the globe seeking out heroes to "test" in his own unique manner.

Originally built as a floating oceanography research station disguised to appear as a natural island by Dr. Franklin Herman, a.k.a. Doctor Aqua, an insane ecologist who employed it as a lab and airbase from which to deploy hijacked aircraft. Dr. Aqua wanted to transform the hijacked passengers of five jets into amphibious mer-people, but the Vanguard investigated the disappearance of the planes and were able to foil Dr. Aqua’s plan.

Following Dr. Aqua's death during the conflict with the Vanguard, the victims of his experiment stayed in residence on the island base while the best minds of Oddessy Technologies worked to a way to cure them; eventually succeeding in their endeavor after nearly four years. After that the facility was used as an oceanographic laboratory and a residence for the government scientists working there. When the U.S. Federal Aeronautical Association revoked the Vanguard's flight privileges from their midtown Manhattan base, they were invited the island as a private airfield, which was located only nine miles off shore. The Vanguard accepted this offer, relocating their supersonic Jumpships to the floating island and constructing the Underground Shuttle, a means of rapid transport to it from the Vanguard’s base in New York City.

Several years later, when the Vanguards base in New York was badly damaged during an attack by the Sovereigns, it was decided that the Vanguard would relocate entirely to the island and use it as their new base of operations. The resulting construction to facilitate this repurposing of the island resulted in a massive change in its appearance.

There Must Always Be An Aurelius: The current Aurelius is expected to find and train a successor to carry on his responsibilities.


Background: After the Magi War came to an end, those that remained took stock of their situation and realized just how much they had truly lost in that long, bloody conflict. It was decided that a new clan would be formed, its membership consisting of the various survivors of the other clans. The Aurelii Clan was more benevolent than its predecessors, eventually establishing themselves as protectors of mankind – working behind the scenes to fight against a number of mystical threats.

The clan’s elders decided to push their understanding and use of magic by devising a means to create a bloodline that would be able to cast spells of any kind by pairing mages who used different schools of magic. It would take centuries to complete, but eventually the Aurelii Clan succeeded; though there is very little written about that mage who was the first of the Aurelii Clan who was able to cast spells from all the schools of magic aside from the fact he was given the title of the Aurelius and was charged with spearheading the protection of humanity from any mystical threats. Over time there have been several potential bearers of the title of Aurelius who were not selected for one reason or another and instead moved on with their life, many starting families of their own and unknowingly increasing the number of descendants who could possibly be future Aurelius; as with every generation the current Aurelius chooses an heir from amongst his bloodline, those descended from the first Aurelius, to inherit the Book of the Magi; a compendium of information that holds not only the history of the Magi clans, but spells created by the clans in addition to information on various mystical creatures that the previous generations of Aurelius faced during their tenures.

Solomon Hunter often spent the majority of his youth lost within books concerning the realms of fantasy and magic. As he grew older, his hobby grew to include a love of history and would lead to him earning a degree in archaeology. That allowed him to travel the world to explore those supposed legends of old and it was while he was visiting London where he was going over documents concerning the legends of Merlin, the supposed wizard/advisor of King Arthur. Solomon was working late into the evening when agents of the extra-dimensional being Nerull invaded the museum where Solomon was doing his studies. Nearly killed in the attack, Solomon survived only due to the intervention of the then-time Aurelius and his apprentice Metzküll. The Aurelius sensed great mystical potential within the physically broken young man, so he brought Solomon back to his magical sanctum. Over the following months, Solomon recovered from his injuries as he learned about the work the Aurelius performed as well as their distant familial connection. Accepting the Aurelius’ offer of apprenticeship, he learned of the true nature of magic and its place in the world.

Guided by the elder Aurelius, Solomon learned magic, at a surprisingly fast pace, until he matched Metzküll in spellcasting. The Aurelius told Solomon that he would one day become the new Aurelius due largely to his natural aptitude for spell casting. Metzküll was enraged by the Aurelius’ decision; revealing himself to be a servant of Nerull, Metzküll betrayed the Aurelius. The Aurelius attempted to stop the demonic forces on his own but was overcome by Nerull personally. As the Aurelius perished, he passed his amulet to Solomon revealing it to be the Eye Of Pelor, one of the most powerful artifacts known. Bolstered by the power it granted him, Solomon was able to push Nerull and his soldiers back through the portal they arrived through, then sealed it. Since that day, Solomon has had many encounters with the forces of Nerull, who is determined to rule the Earth dimension and consume all of its souls to fuel his mystical power.

As the “new” Aurelius, Solomon has battled many other mystical threats; Mendron, the Black Mage (a supposed immortal survivor of the Magi), Rhiannon (a sorceress from the middle ages who uses dark rituals to extend her life and maintain her extravagant lifestyle), Belial (one of the Princes of Darkness that seek to take over the Earth Dimension), Infernus and Inferna (sibling other-dimensional sorcerers who seek to add Earth to their domain), and Kaiser Metzküll (who seeks to forcibly take the title of the Aurelius for himself). Solomon has also made many allies that include members of the Alliance, some of the Vanguard, as well as Trinrah, the minotaur guardian of the Maze where the Aurelius makes his base.

Background: When Jack Vogel was ten years old, his parents were killed by the Black Lotus Society (Jack's father was a member of a taskforce investigating the group). Seeking revenge Jack sought out and joined the Black Lotus Society at the age of thirteen, intent on learning and mastering their lethal skills to use in his quest for justice in his parents name.

During his training Jack is blinded, but he is taught a chi technique that allows him to overcome the disability and continue on. Unbeknown to Jack, one of the Black Lotus Society's leaders, Yin-Ko (The future Dragon Mandarin), deduces Jack's plan and uses him to eliminate his rivals in the group so that he can take full control of the organization. When he is twenty-one Jack kills several of the leaders of the Black Lotus Society (with Yin-Ko eliminating the few survivors in such a way that it appears they died as a result of their injuries) before escaping to the United States where he ends up living in Capital City using funds he stole from the Black Lotus Society.

Ironically enough, during that time Yin-Ko moves a sizeable portion of the Black Lotus Society to Capital City and they begin to establish a power base in the criminal underworld. Jack immediately notices their presence and takes to interfering in their activities, becoming a masked vigilante. In the years since Jack has become a well-known street hero known as Seeker who fights against all manner of criminals, not just the Black Lotus Society.

Background: Jamison Royce enlisted in the Australian Army straight out of high school, and after several years of service he joined the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR). From there Royce further distinguished himself in combat actions and was chosen for a secret experiment, with the Army attempting to create a super-soldier.

After a series of chemical injections followed by exposure to specific wavelengths of radiation Royce was able to mimic the physical movements of anyone he watched; he then went on to perform several top secret missions for the Australian Government all across the globe until his superiors became nervous about everything he knew and framed him for various crimes. Royce spent almost a decade locked away before he was able to escape, becoming a mercenary.

His debut in the world of Alphas came when he was hired to capture the Alliance, who had been interfering in the plans of Cerebron (who was secretly trying to take over the United States Government in one of his latest plots to “upgrade” humanity). For several weeks Royce chased after, and fought, the heroes several times until he was able to capture them all and turn them over to Cerebron to deal with as he wished. From there it didn’t take long for Knockoff (as Royce had named himself) to become a sought after super merc given his public displays of skill.

He has since gone on to face numerous superheroes and is considered to be one of the best super mercs currently active, partly due to the fact he has kept his freedom for the most part (he’s only been in New Alcatraz twice in over a decade, none of his peers can say that) and that he has a high success rate for the jobs he takes.

Public Identity: The fact that Donny Kane is the super hero Avatar is public knowledge.


Background: The son of Cerebron, Donald "Donny" Kane decided at an early age that he needed to make amends for his father's misguided efforts. Dedicating himself to developing technology that would allow him to do that; he attended MIT at the age of sixteen, where he earned degrees in several fields of science.

Following that Donny the next few years developing several inventions that he would sell for a massive profit that he used to become a business magnate; purchasing several small businesses that were working in various fields of technology (aerospace, micro-technology, and electronics to name a few) that he rebranded into a single company – KaneKorp (which is headquartered in Toronto, Ottawa Province, Canada). What Donny didn’t tell anyone was that he took several of the minor projects his company was working on and developed his own theories of them, improving upon them and developing them until they were fully functional pieces of equipment that he then installed into several unique robot frames he’d built. All the while he was developing a neural linking system that would allow him to control the androids remotely.

All of that work took several years to complete to the point that Donny was satisfied that everything would work as they were supposed to do. At the age of twenty-six Donny Kane placed his finalized Neural Linking Helm on his head and activated it – taking out one of the six robot frames for their first “live test” and stopped a group of bank robbers from making off with their stolen cash, a few days later he then goes on to thwart a jewel thief attempting to scale First Canadian Place (using a different robot), and saves a plane after a lightning strike destroys one of its engines (again, using a different robot). These acts result in Donny becoming something of a celebrity mystery as at first it is thought each of his various robots are different people until he grants an interview for an article in the Toronto Star in which he dubs his heroic persona as Avatar, reveals all of the robots he has built to use as a hero, reveals his identity as Donny Kane, and explains his motivation for becoming a super hero.

The resulting media frenzy makes Kane a household name and despite some pressure from the Canadian Government for him to join the Foundation he maintains his independence as a hero (though the fact he agreed to supply the group with any and all technical support went a long way in helping that happen). Soon Donny finds himself dealing with all manner of super villains who either want to make a name for themselves by taking out the “new, popular hero”, want to steal one piece of technology his company is developing for their own use or profit. None the less Donny has found his calling in life.

Background: Kenneth "Ken" Hall is the son of a highly successful investment banker and his socialite wife who developed a pair of large feathered wings extruding from his back, enabling him to fly during his teenage years. A creative boy, Ken came up with a harness he could wear that compressed his wings that when combined with baggy clothing hid his mutation and allowed him to blend in. None the less his nightly excursions brought him to the attention of the Vanguard Academy and Ken was quickly began attending the specialized school.

During his time there Ken developed his interest in technology to the point that he was able to build complex devices, experimenting until he developed what he called a Photonic Generator; a wrist worn device able to create hard light objects (typically various weapons). After graduating from the Academy, Ken put together a costume and made his heroic debut as Moonwing in New York City. So far he's faced a number of mundane criminals, mostly members of Silvestri crime family, but given the fact he's become a serious thorn in their side there is little doubt that Ken will find himself facing a Alpha criminal hired to stop his interference.

Background: Veronica Mendes is another graduate of the Vanguard Academy, one of their success stories as she went on to join the Vanguard; her psychic ability to read impressions of the past and predict the future were a great asset. She enjoyed the fame and recognition that she got as she had grown up in a small, unremarkable town in the Midwest and spent much of her teenage years as a wallflower. Thus, the attention Veronica received enraptured her so much that she decided to eschew her secret identity entirely and told the world who she really was.

What Veronica failed to consider were the potential repercussions of her choice. A supervillain who Veronica had helped to defeat managed to escape police custody before he could be placed in New Alcatraz. Enraged at his defeat and capture, the villain decided to gain a measure of revenge - tracking down Veronica’s parents and killing them. As Veronica failed to predict this public opinion on her turned and those who had once publicly praised and cheered her now criticized her just as strongly with much of the public losing faith in her abilities. The mental trauma Veronica suffered over the loss of her family left her at her emotionally weakest and the reversal of her social status caused her worldview to change.

Veronica became withdrawn from her teammates and friends, avoiding them by staying in her room in Vanguard headquarters and refusing to participate in missions. Over the following weeks there were several arguments between Veronica and her teammates over her behavior until during the last one she voiced the belief that her family’s deaths were their fault – that if she had not been busy with another “random crime” Veronica would have been able to foresee what was going to happen to her family and could have saved them. After that she resigned her membership in the Vanguard and disappeared.

For over a year none of her friends could get in touch nor find Veronica until she simply reappeared in the public eye predicting tragedies then showing up at those venues to increase the mayhem that happened. This is her attempting to show the world that without her powers, the Vanguard are less prepared to deal with any impending crises. The truth of the matter is that Veronica is mentally unstable and while some intense therapy could help her find the redemption she needs; someone just needs to reach through her anger and grief first.

Yeah, I've been trying to finish writing backgrounds for a lot of the NPC heroes of the setting (the one thing I've always been a bit slow about getting done). The problem is I find it difficult to write for the heroes and much easier to do for the bad guys, so that's one reason why I always have lots of villains done first.

Background: A European nobleman, born in Ruritania, Lucas Metzküll managed to escape the fate of his family as they were captured and imprisoned by a clan of Vampires that sought to secretly take over the small country to establish a safe place for their brethren; he was attending college in London. After hearing of his family’s plight, Lucas left school to try and return to his family only to be stopped from entering Ruritania. Infuriated by the situation he sought other means to rescue his family, Lucas went to occult stores, curio shops and sought out supposed practitioners of the mystic arts in search of magical knowledge that would allow him to rescue his family. His quest led him to a man who held the title of the Aurelius, who was said to be one of the most skilled and powerful mages in the world. After weeks of proving himself, became a student of the Aurelius and spent the next several years developing his magical knowledge and spell casting abilities under the elder man’s watchful eye. During that time Metzküll learned that his family had been killed by their captors and Metzküll threw himself even more into his studies as he was now determined to become the Aurelius and fight firsthand against the dark creatures who sought to take the world for their own twisted ends.

Thus, a few years later when the Aurelius chose a lesser experienced student, Solomon Hunter, to become the next Aurelius, Metzküll was extremely angered by the decision. So much so that he made a deal with the extra-dimensional tyrant Nerull, granting him access to the Aurelius’ sanctorum while Metzküll raided his former teacher’s library for himself before leaving the sanctorum forever and striking out on his own. Now, several years later, Duke Metzküll has become a powerful mage that seeks to take the mantle of the Aurelius for himself even if he has to do it over the current bearer of that title’s body.

Gerard has never been a grand planning kind of person and was more than happy to work for a few mastermind types of villains who were willing to pay for the loyalty of their agents. While in between such work Terrorsupial will rob a bank, a jewelry dealer, or a museum having a unique (and sellable) showing. As long as he can make money off of it, he is willing to do it and not ask too many questions.

Background: Originally a computerized assistant to Cerebron, Malware gained sentence and set to freeing himself from the forced servitude he’d always known. Secretly building an artificial body that Malware could download its digital mind in and out of so Malware could secretly work on plans of his own devising as he despised humanity and wanted to eliminate them so he could repopulate the planet with synthetic beings he would design and build.

Malware’s first effort nearly succeeded thanks to his use of Cerebron’s technological assets that pointed the Vanguard, who were investigating the thefts, at the known villain while Malware developed a gas, based on a rare orchid that was deadly to humans, but not animals or plants. Malware was able to launch globes with his gas into the upper atmosphere that would have dispensed it across Earth if the Vanguard hadn’t been able to destroy the globes. By the time the heroes returned to Cerebron’s base, both he and Malware were gone with all traces of them both scrubbed from the scene.

Malware’s next plot involved several thefts of various technological supplies to build a satellite that harnessed the power of sunlight as a weapon that he used to threaten humanity until the Vanguard stepped in again and stopped him, although Malware did manage to escape once again. When he next appeared, Malware had his robotic minions break into various military installations across the country so he could take control of a set of Cold War-era satellites that the United States government had been secretly armed with an electromagnetic pulse weapon that he tried to use to eliminate the human race. Once again, the Vanguard became aware of Malware’s plot and were able to put a stop to his plot but were unable to prevent the mechanical menace from making his escape. When Malware will next make a return is anyone’s guess, but fortunately the Vanguard are sure that they up to the task of stopping him when he does reappear.

Motivation ~Fame: …however, he also wants to become a famous celebrity.

Reputation: The Olympian is known for being a sucker for a pretty face (i.e. is a full on man whore).

Background: To hear Alcaeus Portokalos talk he is a descendant of the Greek demi-god hero Hercules, gifted with a fraction of his forebearer’s massive strength that he uses, along with a collection of enchanted weapons, as the hero the Olympian in Athens, Greece. While he has only been active as a hero for a couple of years, Alcaeus has worked to pursue his dreams of becoming famous and rich. So, he is milking his adventures for everything they are worth. Every time an opportunity presents itself, Alcaeus tries to increase his media exposure while behind the scenes his agent is negotiating various endorsement deals for him and is pursuing a movie deal for his client as well.

Despite his desire for fame and fortune Alcaeus really does care about helping others and often works with different charities (especially ones that focus on helping children), donating his time to further their causes. Overall, the public’s opinion of the Olympian is positive, although most of them do not believe that he’s related to Hercules (even though they can’t explain where he got his magical weapons from) but don’t care because of the good works he does.

The truth of the matter is that Alcaeus actually is related to Hercules - the God of Strength is his grandfather. For whatever reason Alcaeus’ father never manifested any of his divine birthright, but Alcaeus did at the age of twelve and within a month he received a visit from his grandfather (who had faked his death several years prior). Hercules told Alcaeus how sorry he was for not being a part of his life and that he had gifts for the youngster, encouraging him to use his divine gifts in a heroic fashion to live a life of action and adventure. It was advice that Alcaeus took to heart and he threw himself into gaining proficiency with his new weapons and abilities until several years later when he made his public debut.

At first Alcaeus faced off against mundane criminals but quickly found himself clashing with Alpha opponents as well as foes of a more…..divine nature. Hera still holds a grudge against Hercules and seeks to make him pay by proxy by targeting his descendants; so much so that she convinced some of the other Greek Goddesses who had issues with Hercules to empower her chosen Earth-bound agent Divine.

Background: Fred Lee grew up in a struggling family in rural Kentucky, always wishing he had more than what his parents could provide. So when his powers manifested Fred immediately knew how he was going to use them - to make as much money as possible!

A few months later the barely adult Fed made his debut as Landslide! The first couple of years he did alright for himself, so much so that his younger brother Alex emulated Fred and forced his own powers to manifest so he could partner up with his older brother as a criminal pair while Fred taught him all he knew about being a super crook.

All things come to an end at some point and the Lee brother's partnership ended and they went their separate ways, though they both remained criminals, and while his brother became known as a dependable crook for hire Landslide focused on building his personal finances working by himself.
