HISTORY
He was born centuries ago, though the time period remains unspecified. He is said to descend from a proud bloodline, though the names of his ancestors remain unknown. He was raised by the Strontian council of elders. They were as much family to him as his blood relatives.

Kallark was a cadet on his native planet Strontia, training with other young Strontian men and women, competing for the title of Gladiator. Kallark proved himself an honorable person as well as an efficient soldier then.

Later, Kallark along with the only nine other cadets to have completed the training mission were in-formed by the council of elders of the purpose of their trials: The new Imperial Guard of the Shi'ar Empire would include the finest warrior of each race of the Empire as its representative. The ten Strontians underwent an enhancement process to become Gladiator, granting them even further powers than those of their kind.

The choice for the cadet to join the Guard was to be made by Majestor T'Korr. First disappointed by the youth of the cadets, T'Korr then began doubting their loyalty after Chancellor Vitana informed him that even an ordinary Strontian had the power to decimate an army.

To test their loyalty, T'Korr had a Shi'ar Starcracker orbiting Strontia's sun, able to make it go nova in case of rebellion, and informed the council of his plans: He addressed the cadets, informing that he would make his selection among them after they slayed the Council of Elders. While most of the cadets died rebelling or trying to accomplish the mission, Kallark managed to take down the Council, despite his friend Harrald's opposition, then retreated, somehow knowing of the Shi'ar starcracker and dis-mantling.

Kallark then returned to T'Korr, told him that his fellows had all fallen in battle, and was named Gladiator, Praetor of the Imperial Guard.

According to the family history known by Korvus, the Imperial Guard was formed to stop his ancestor Rook'shir. He was a Shi'ar outlaw who became an avatar of the Phoenix Force. Gladiator led the Guard against him to prevent him from destroying the Shi'ar Empire. Known members of the Guard at the time included Magique, Mentor, and Neutron.

The details of the battle between the Guard and Rook'shir have not been detailed. But the battle ended with Gladiator having defeated the Phoenix avatar. He was holding Rook'shir up by the head. He positioned the defeated foe in a kneeling position and prepared to deliver the killing blow, using his right fist to decapitate Rook'shir. A piece of the Phoenix Force remained within Rook'shir's sword which became known as the Blade of the Phoenix. The Guard retrieved the sword following the battle.

Gladiator continued to serve succeeding rulers of the Shi'ar Empire, including Emperor D'Ken Neramani. Members of the Imperial Guard under his command at that time included Astra, Electron, Fang, Hobgoblin, Impulse, Magique, Mentor, Neutron, Nightside, Oracle, Scintilla, Smasher, Starbolt, Tempest, and Titan.

The X-Men (Banshee, Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Phoenix, Storm, and Wolverine) were teleported from Earth to the "World". There they found D'Ken, Eric the Red, the captive Lilandra. and the gathered Imperial Guard. Astra asked Gladiator who were these people, and whether the new arrivals were friends or foes.

Realizing that they can understand each other's language, the two teams started to talk. Representing the X-Men, Cyclops explained that they came to get Lilandra and Eric the Red. Gladiator introduced him-self and his team. He also pointed that the X-Men were surrounded and outnumbered. He next explained that Lilandra was both a princess and a traitor to the Empire. He declared that the Guard would not surrender the prisoner. In reply, Cyclops attacked Mentor and started a battle between the two teams. Gladiator swore that Cyclops would pay for his attack and that he would personally kill him with his bare hands. He then commanded the Guard to attack.

Nightcrawler teleported Lilandra out of danger. She explained to Cyclops her own background, the civil war of the Shi'ar and how it affected their own recent battles on Earth. She pointed that D'Ken seeks absolute power. Overhearing her explanation, Gladiator approached the princess. He asked Lilandra what right she had to deny this power to her emperor, reminding her that she herself swore an oath of service to D'Ken. She replied that that oath was sworn to a madman, asking Gladiator to open his eyes, or else D'Ken's dreams of imperial glory would close these eyes forever.

Gladiator answered that he did not care about the consequences. The Guard's role is not to question orders, but obey them, and by D'Ken's will, Lilandra and her companions had to die. Gladiator managed to grab Lilandra and added that he would not listen to her. He regretted ever caring for her. Lilandra was still trying to reason with him, claiming that she was only seeking to save the Empire while D'Ken is fated to destroy it. Gladiator asked her how she knows what D'Ken was going to do. She admit-ted that she does not know but only fears, but that the power D'Ken seeks was known as "the End of All That Is".

The conversation between Gladiator and Lilandra ended at this point. Gladiator was attacked by a laser beam by the arriving Starjammers and seemingly knocked out. The combined forces of the X-Men and the Starjammers finished off the rest of the Guard, winning the battle. The unconscious body of Gladiator was seen on the ground at the battle's ending.

D'Ken pointed that their victory was only temporary. He called for his foes to look to the sky above them. At this point a gateway opened, blue-white light emerged and poured into the nearby M'Kraan Crystal. For a fraction of a second all reality ceased to exist. Gladiator and the Guard remained unconscious while Jahf emerged to face the X-Men and Starjammers. When Jahf fell, Modt emerged to replace him. During the fight, D'Ken was thrown in the Crystal. He and everyone conscious nearby were transported to the interior of the Crystal. Phoenix had to fight her own battle in there.

The X-Men emerged triumphant from the Crystal back to the "World". By this point Gladiator, Nightside, and Starbolt had regained consciousness and were ready to attack them. They intended to follow D'Ken's commands and kill them. Lilandra spoke directly to Gladiator and prevented him from attacking. She claimed that with D'Ken out of the way, the throne belonged to her. The Guard had to obey her.

At this point, Araki arrived and explained that Lilandra was not empress yet. D'Ken was now mad and the throne vacant, but she legally remained a traitor. It would take time to clear her name and summon her to be crowned. Afterward, the X-Men and Lilandra were teleported to Earth. Lilandra explained that D'Ken was driven insane and catatonic by the experience. For the time being the Shi'ar throne was vacant and she stood as the main candidate for it. But until the High Council decided to summon her to receive the throne, she would spend her exile on Earth. This would mean that Gladiator and the Guard were no longer their enemies.

In time, Phoenix turned to Dark Phoenix, a major threat. In the Imperial Center, ruling seat of the Shi’ar Empire, Empress Lilandra and her ministers of the Grand Council observe a viewing screen. They see the Dark Phoenix approach Earth. Lilandra compared the threat posed by the Dark Phoenix to Galactus: both beings felt infernal hunger and the need to consume. But while Galactus consumed only individual worlds, the Dark Phoenix could consume everything in existence. Lilandra decided that the Dark Phoenix had to be destroyed for the universe to survive.

The X-Men (Angel, Beast, Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Phoenix, Professor X, Storm, and Wolverine) were teleported aboard the flagship of the Shi'ar grand fleet. Gladiator spoke to them, reminding them of his codename and status as Praetor. He announced that they were in the presence of Empress Lilandra and their fate rested in her hands.

Lilandra announced her decision that the Phoenix had to be destroyed for the universe to remain safe. She continued that since "Jean" could not cope with her near-infinite abilities, the Shi'ar can no longer do nothing about the threat she posed. She asked Gladiator to continue in announcing her plans. Gladiator explained that Dark Phoenix was a chaos-bringer and a ravager of worlds. Responsible for the deaths of five billion inhabitants of the D'bari star system and the destruction of a Shi'ar warship. The X-Men react in shock that one of their members is a mass murderer.

Lilandra asked the X-Men to surrender "Jean" to Shi'ar custody. Cyclops then claimed that Dark Phoenix no longer existed. "Jean" no longer has access to that power. Lilandra argued that "Jean"'s depowerment could be only temporary. She also argued that as long as Phoenix existed in any form, at any power level, she would be a deadly threat to all that lives. The risk is too great to let "Jean" survive. She ordered her warriors to capture "Jean", Professor X then shouted the ceremonial words “Arin’nn Haelar", challenging Lilandra to a duel of honor for the life of "Jean Grey".

Lilandra decided that she had to stop proceedings and consult her allies before making a decision. Said allies were the Supreme Intelligence, ruler of the Kree Empire and Empress R'Kill of the Skrull Empire. They both agreed to the duel, provided that their representatives would monitor the battle. Lilandra decided that the duel would begin at dawn.

The following day, the flagship transported the combatants to Earth's moon. The Imperial Guard would represent Lilandra on the battlefield. Lilandra announced the terms of the battle: the two teams would fight until only one remained. If the X-Men won, their survivors would be set free. If the Guard won, Phoenix would belong to the Shi'ar. The chosen battleground was the Blue Area of the Moon.

Professor X was excluded from the combatants, leaving only eight X-Men on the battlefield. The X-Men split into two groups, each with four members. A group consisting of Beast, Colossus, Storm, and Wolverine encountered and fought Warstar. While Colossus fought C'cil and Beast fought B'nee, Storm and Wolverine stayed on the side-lines. Gladiator approached the two X-Men from behind and ripped up the floor that they were standing on. Storm and Wolverine consequently fell into a pit.

While Warstar continued to face his opponents, Gladiator observed the battle. He eventually realized that Warstar was losing the battle. Colossus knocked out C'cil and B'nee knocked out the Beast, leaving the two of them to face each other, with Colossus outclassing his opponent. At this point, Gladiator intervened and attacked Colossus. He explained that for Colossus to get to any other members of the Guard, he would have to go through him first. And he self-confidently announced that victory was impossible for Colossus. Gladiator knocked Colossus into a wall.

Colossus considered that Gladiator was as strong as himself, but decided that perhaps he was more vulnerable to harm. Colossus dropped an entire pillar on Gladiator, who seemed completely unfazed. The opponents then engaged into a brutal fist fight. The ancient, fragile structures around them crumbled and collapsed on top of the two combatants. They were buried below mountains of rubble. After a while, Gladiator managed to lift boulders and emerge from the rubble. His uniform was torn but his body was unharmed. He was the victor by default and took the time to rescue the unconscious Colossus.

Cyclops and Phoenix were the last X-Men left standing, holding their own against Oracle, Smasher, and Starbolt. Gladiator flew to their position to join the battle. An energy flare from the moon served to an-nounce that the Phoenix was back. Deciding that the Guard had no chance to win against the threat, Lilandra was prepared to destroy the Moon, the Sol, and the entire star cluster, all in hopes of killing Phoenix. Gladiator and the Guard were unconscious, defeated by the Phoenix. At the end, the Phoenix committed suicide, seemingly eliminating the threat.

Kallark was later charged with pursuing a group of Skrulls posing as a superhero team. He believed the Fantastic Four to be this group and attacked them. Captain America and Spider-Man found the real Skrull group and assisted in their capture.

Kallark was among a number of Imperial Guard members temporarily relocated to Earth. After learning of a Phalanx invasion of Shi'ar space he confronted Cannonball, sending him, the Beast, Trish Tilby, Joseph and Rogue to assist in his stead.

At another point, Kallark was enlisted by Pip the Troll to try and liberate the planet Skardon from the apathetic rule of the Champion of the Universe (because Skardon law would not recognize the legitimacy of any challenger unless they could beat the Champion in a boxing match). Kallark fought against the Champion, but lost because the Champion possessed the Power Gem which allows its wearer access to all the power that has or will exist. Kallark spent a period of time recuperating from his injuries; meanwhile, She-Hulk convinced the Champion to remove the Power Gem, and subsequently pummeled him into submission.

Kallark was sent to Earth to find the Uni-Power, which was traveling from host to host for help against Krosakis. He found it with the Invisible Woman, and was able to convince it to come with him. Krosakis attacked Kallark and the Uni-Power as they left Earth. The Silver Surfer intervened and returned the Uni-Power to Earth while Kallark took Krosakis into Shi'ar custody.

When Vulcan captured a Shi'ar cruiser with intention of attacking the Shi'ar Empire the Imperial Guard were dispatched to stop him. Vulcan was able to hold is own against the gathered forces but was finally defeated by Kallark (who seriously injured Vulcan).

Vulcan later married Cal'syee Neramani (Deathbird) and upon murdering then Shi'ar Emperor D'Ken ascended to the throne as Emperor Vulcan. Kallark conferred with his new Empress before following the orders of Vulcan, but did so nevertheless.

Gladiator served his new Emperor as he had all others in the past but eventually disobeyed his orders (in this case, the execution of Lilandra) and rose up against his Emperor.

He was present when Lilandra was assassinated by the Fraternity of Raptors agent known as Razor. Razor had taken over his host Chris Powell (Darkhawk) but was overridden too late to stop the assassination.

With Vulcan presumed dead and Deathbird incapacitated, Gladiator took leadership of the fragmented Sh'iar empire in order to prevent another civil war. The Shi'ar, having lost the war with the Kree, however, fell under their rule.

Following the war with the Cancerverse, Gladiator joined the Annihilators. With them, he protected Galador from the Dire Wraiths and opposed the Universal Church of Truth's attempt to revive the Magus.

After the Phoenix arrived on Earth and chose five hosts from among the X-Men, Kallark traveled to Earth in order to stop them and rescue his son. He was no match for the Phoenixes and was defeated and beaten. The Phoenixes spared him, and Kallark and his son left Earth.

Kallark arrived at the border of the Shi'ar Empire following the inertial alert from Operation: Broken Frontier. After the death of Superguardian Smasher (Galin) during the action, Gladiator promoted Izzy Kane to be the Superguardian for the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, noting that she was the first Guardsman from Earth. During the interrogation of a member of the race that invaded the empire, the Majestor learned that they had only attacked the Empire because they had been fleeing a greater threat.

The threat that forced the aliens to attacked the Shi'ar Imperium revealed itself to be known as the Builders. Kallark joined the Galactic Council alongside with the Avengers to eliminate the Builders. Following the defeat of the Builders, Gladiator planned to expand the Imperial Guard.

When the focus of the decay of the universe was found to be the Earth, the Majestor addressed the Galactic Council, and decided that the Earth had to be destroyed to save the universe. Even though they planned a sneak attack on the Earth, the Guardians of the Galaxy managed to discover the Shi'ar's plan and warned the Avengers.

While approaching Earth, the Shi'ar alerted humanity that they had two hours left to live until Earth was destroyed by their fleet. Using a super weapon capable of channeling the Earth's power, Sunspot and A.I.M. retaliated against the Shi'ar in front, while S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Avengers used a Planetkiller seized from the Builders to attack from behind. However, A.I.M.'s weapon overheated and exploded, and the Planetkiller was destroyed by the Annihilation Wave. With no options left, the Avengers prepared to meet their end. However, the Illuminati used the controller disk of a rogue planet that shared the same space with Earth while phased while Iron Man flew to the Sol's Hammer, and prepared to use it. Iron Man charged and fired Sol's Hammer, successfully destroying the Shi'ar fleet, including the Majestor.

Once the universe was destroyed, it ultimately came back. The Shi'ar and the Imperial Guard were brought back as a byproduct of the universal renewal, with no memories of the universe's temporary demise, like the rest of the inhabit-ants of the universe.

Gladiator and the Shi'ar Empire eventually captured Jean Grey of the Time-Displaced X-Men so they could put her on trial for her future version's crimes. Jean Grey was able to escape the empire thanks to combined effort of the X-Men, Starjammers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

When the Shi'ar Gods, K'ythri and Sharra were convinced they need-ed to force the new Thor to take part in a Challenge of the Gods against them to prove their superiority, they send Gladiator and the other Imperial Guard to Asgard to capture her. When the other Asgardians were inspired by the new Thor to fight the unjust gods, Gladiator and the Imperial Guard fought them, but were in turn defeated. In the ensuing Challenge of the Gods, as the result of the Shi'ar Gods causing mass suffering to their people, this prompted them to turn on their gods. Since the Shi'ar Gods lost the challenge they unleashed the Phoenix Force on the Creation. Gladiator knocked the Shi'ar Gods out and helped the Asgardians to appease the Phoenix thanks to Quentin Quire who became the new god of the Shi'ar.

When the being known as Mother Entropy was accidentally unleashed by Pip the Troll and made him her vessel to infect the uni-verse, the Guardians of the Galaxy escaped to the Shi'ar Space where they asked Gladiator for help. However, he instead incarcerated them due to their past crimes. When Star-Lord tried to convince Gladiator about the threat that Mother Entropy posed, she ambushed them infecting Gladiator and the Empire with her spores. Following the infection of the entire universe including cosmic beings, Groot was able to destroy Mother Entropy and free all universe from her influence. Afterwards, Gladiator and the Shi'ar tried to capture Pip, but he teleported away.

HISTORY
A long forgotten Shi'ar god perceived to be a predatory antithesis to the enigmatic and ever living Phoenix Force, while the entity was lost to the anneals of history. A secretive sect within the imperium retained an ancestral memory of their lost deity due to having been modeled after, and designed to act as vessels for it; The Fraternity of Raptors.

The Hawk God’s primary reason for being was of predation which is a primal necessity for insuring the survival of the fittest at all existential stratum. However, he had travel far beyond the parameters of his directive. He began to find it necessary to perpetrate cruelty for its own sake. This behavior was far below that of being on his level of existence.

Legend has it that the Hawk God was responsible for the destruction of the Watchers. For that genocide Eternity brought him before the Supreme Council of Abstract Beings. A jury of his peers was sequestered and the Living Tribunal called the hearing to order. Pleading the case of the Prosecution was Uilig the last Watcher. The mighty planet eater Galactus provided the defense for the Hawk God. He appeared to sway the jurors with an eloquent dissertation on "the need to feed." However, Uilig introduced proactive evidence that linked the Hawk God with the multiversally-despised plague bringer Bubonicus. Galactus strongly objected to this inflammatory and uncorroborated accusation. The Tribunal ruled the rumor as inadmissible, although, he re-minded the irate Hawk God that he had been deemed to be danger-ous. As it was often whispered that he might be the one to precipitate the "War of the Cosmic Beings."

The Hawk God was demoted and sent back into time to stand in solitary confinement as a silent deity on the planet of Arcturus

Upon his release from Null Space, Gyre of the Raptor's sought to use this entity in order to destroy Earth, as the datasong of his collective forewarned him of the threat it poses to their plans of universal conquest. To that end he initiated a ritualistic offering on the abandoned outpost of Centauri IV, home to the sacrificial alter which paid tribute to the enclaves lost idol. For it to take effect a duel sacrament was required to awaken him; one willing, that being the brainwashed Talon-R of the dis-posed Raptor Fraternity to act as Ratha'kon's host. Finally, one forced which pertained to Darkhawk as Gyre needed his Raptor Amulet as a focusing point to channel the entity.

Upon completion of this blood offering Gyre transplanted the gem freshly ripped from Powell's being into Robbie, creating an entity he believes to be more powerful than the Phoenix itself. The union of said beings came to be called the Dark Starhawk, and with this new entity as their ultimate weapon. Gyre and the Raptor's strode off towards their desired target.

The Dark Starhawk and the Rap-tors planned to raze the Earth to eliminate their greatest threat, humanity, but they were confronted on the way there by Darkhawk, Nova, and Death's Head. Nova, horrified for discovering his brother was the Dark Starhawk, tried his best to reason with him during the intense fight that broke out, but his words fell on deaf ears. Preferring to carry out his own version of order in the universe, Dark Starhawk killed Gyre and invited his brother to join the Raptors. When Death's Head exploded a Kree warp core, wiping out all the Raptors except for Dark Starhawk, Darkhawk took the opportunity to reclaim his Rap-tor Amulet.

Defeated the Hawk God remained imprisoned on Arcturus. There he stayed for centuries until young Stakar felt an "inexplicable urge" to explore the Forbidden City. He was followed by his stepsister Aleta, unprovoked; she threw a brain wave helmet on the ground, regenerating the Hawk God. Speculation spread that he had manipulated the Arcturians and that his violent nature had ceased over his imprisonment. This thought was short lived, because he immediately consumed Aleta and Stakar's life-forces. Subsequently he savagely attacked the Reaver Fleet, promptly reestablishing his reputation as the renegade member of the Cosmic Elite.

Fraternity of Raptors

Fraternity of Raptors

Background:
The members of the Fraternity of Raptors all possess an amulet and suit of armor. The Fraternity of Raptors protects the long term interests of the Shi'ar Empire in a mission they call "The Great Purpose." The raptors armor make use of a stream of information called the Datasong which provides them with information about past and future events.

Eventually, the Fraternity grew too powerful and each member was sealed in patches of dark matter throughout Shi'ar territory. After the Skrull secret invasion, several Rap-tors were freed. They are continuing their mission and destroying anyone who stands in their way.

Talon and Razor were successful in assassinating former Empress Lilandra of the Shi'ar Empire. Darkhawk eventually defeated Razor and Talon and both were banished to Null Space. The Sphinx later arranged for Darkhawk to fight a third member of the Raptors named Gyre who Darkhawk also defeated and banished to Null Space. Talon later returned and convinced Mentor and Plutonia of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard to become raptors using two amulets. Mentor became Strel and Plutonia became Kyte. Talon was last seen posing as the Shi'ar adviser Araki.

Mentor and Plutonia have been seen in the interim in their normal forms. This may indicate Strel and Kyte have been defeated or it may indicate that like the humans the raptor armor was never meant to work with their respective species thus Mentor and Plutonia never lost their free will. Also Talon has shown the ability to shape shift so Strek and Kyte may just be masquerading as their hosts.

After the Multiverse was reset, the Fraternity had become an inde-pendent crew of murderous zealots operating under the radar of the Shi'ar Empire and its current emperor in pursuit of becoming a predominant paramilitary authority throughout the universe. Lacking the Raptor Android armor technology of the true fraternity, their first step was the collection and acquisition of items of power scattered across the galaxies.

One search in particular led them to the decimated remains of Xandar former home base of the Nova Corps. Initially coming there looking for remnants of the Nova Force, all they found was the last Denarian class Nova still on active duty; Robbie Rider. Whom they took aboard their return ship and brainwashed him into service of their corrupted cause through Simulated Reality integration. Accepting him as one of their own over the years of mental conditioning that followed, Robbie rechristened himself as Talonar; in which he offered to secure a pair of Nega-Bands from an impounded Nova Corps detainment facility.

He was beaten to the punch how-ever when Star Lord and his crew unknowingly stole the raptor vessel he was after. In the meantime, two raptor designates Canorus and Aceptar were dispatched to Earth on his orders to obtain the known Raptor Amulet from Chris Powell. The tables were turned however for in re-activating the Razor An-droid it merged with its previous host and they were now taking the fight to them.

Tracking back to the Guardians issue, Talonar takes a squadron of Raptors to battle in order to claim his prize, in the skirmish he man-aged to poison rocket with toxin tipped claws before making off with one half of the bands. Hearing of this, Quill went in search of Talonar and the two clashed in epic battle, each bearing half the power the Nega Bands where they eventually crashed landed on a planet-oid as they kept losing their power mid-fight. Though Robbie had Quill on the ropes for a moment, Star-Lord got the upper hand in the end of the skirmish; in exchange for the antidote, his half of the bands and the assassin's life.

Peter opted to spare him and relinquish his find for the cure to his toxin, on his word Peter gave up his band; right before chucking it through a portal into Ultron afflicted territory. It is soon revealed The Raptors have established a sizable spy operation within the galaxy, particularly within the resettling Nova Corps.

Deep cover operatives of whom helped them undermine the Nova Corps as well as hide behind the few crooked Novas' shady dealing while relaying sensitive information coming their way to the Raptors. They even paid some of the more corrupt corpsmen to purposely release Thanos from their custody while falsifying a report that he escaped When news came of a membership revocation on part of the corps, the splinter cell of Raptors were ordered to pave the way for invasion of The Rock by causing internal structural damage while their main forces were on their way to decimate the perceived weakened Nova Corps. This information was falsified however and instead the invading force was decimated by Ant-Man and a Nova Force empowered Rocket.

After learning of that the Power Stone was on the planet Xitaung, a contingent of Raptors tried to seize it, leading to a three way battle be-tween the Raptors, the Nova Corps, and a group of Chitauri lead by Warbringer for the Power Stone. The Guardians of the Galaxy intervened and were able to take control of the Power Stone, causing Xitaung's destruction and forcing the Raptors to retreat.

Seeking to liberate the real Raptors from the Tree of Shadows, the Fraternity of Raptors took Talon-R to the Shi'ar Outpost IV so he could open a doorway to the Null Space with the power of his Nega-Bands. To their surprise, the real Raptors were already free and no longer needed to bond with a living being to work. The freed Raptors killed all the pretenders save for Talon-R, who used the Nega-Bands to protect himself.

Needing a living being to serve as the willing tribute of a ritual that would unlock the true power of the Starhawk within their ranks, Gyre convinced Talon-R to join them in their quest to bring order to the galaxy. With a subdued Chris Powell serving as the forced tribute, Gyre completed the ritual and transformed Talon-R into the Dark Starhawk using Chris' Raptor Amulet.

Robbie and the Raptors planned to raze Earth but were confronted by Chris, Robbie's brother Nova, and Death's Head. An intense fight broke out when Nova trying his best to reason with his brother, but his words fell on deaf ears. Robbie then killed Gyre, preferring to carry out his own version of order in the universe. Moments later, Death's Head rigged the power core of the Kree ship the Raptors stole to explode, wiping out the Raptors except for Robbie, though he was stunned. Chris took the opportunity to reclaim his Raptor Amulet. Though badly injured, Robbie was able to flee by striking his Nega-Bands together.

Robbie later assembled a new contingent of Raptors and obtained a new ship. He witnessed the Infinity Stones leave Earth after Ad-am Warlock gave them sentience and noted that one Stone remained on Earth and that the Rap-tors needed to find the Stones' new wielders.

Robbie and a team of Raptors tracked down the possessor of the Time Stone, escaped convict Hector Bautista, and kidnapped him. Wolverine and Loki attempted to rescue Hector, but they were over-whelmed by the Raptors' superior numbers. Loki decided to retreat back to Earth and convinced Robbie's mother Gloria Rider to talk some sense into him. However, Robbie unintentionally killed his mother when he thought she was one of Loki's illusions. Gloria's death was reversed when Hector went back in time. Then the Chitauri warrior Warbringer appeared to claim the Time Stone and dam-aged to the Raptors' ship to the point where it started to self-destruct. Robbie, Gloria, Wolverine, Loki, and Hector managed to flee to Earth, leaving Warbringer and the Raptors to perish when the ship exploded.

Raptor Amulet: The Raptor Amulet allows the user swap their body and consciousness with that of an alien android. The user's body is sent to Null Space and stored at the Tree of Shadows.
  • Healing: Raptors can heal up to 40 points of lost Health by changing between his human and Raptor form. He must spend one complete round in his other form before changing back (e.g., if a Raptor has been injured, he must spend one round in the host’s form before transforming back to Raptor if healing is to occur).
  • Datasong: This provides the Raptor android with a form of Cosmic Awareness at Remarkable (30) intensity. Human brains are incompatible with this system and must learn to synch with it.
  • Configured Forms: The Raptor android can be reconfigured into numerous forms optimizing its abilities. The android may shift it’s attributes around. It may not exceed its original Health stat. Switching between forms requires 1 round.

Many of the older races such as the Kree, Skrull and Shi'ar are compatible with the Raptor armor thus giving the raptor complete control of their host. Chris Powell having free will when he became Darkhawk made him some-thing of an anomaly. If he had been from an older race, Razor would have controlled the raptor armor from the beginning. The AI may attempt to take over the human host once he has synched with the Data-song succeeding on a RED psychic FEAT.

CONTACTS: Richard Rider (Nova), Darkhawk, Fraternity of Raptors

HISTORY
Robert Rider was the younger brother of Richard Rider, aka Nova. Richard had always been insecure about Robbie being smarter than he was, but Robbie always looked up to his big brother.

At some point Richard confided in his family about his powers. Robbie was usually more supportive of Richard's role as a hero than their parents. At one point Robbie as kidnapped by a street gang called the Poison Memories who had a grudge against Nova's team, the New Warriors. The gang leader Kimeko Ashu chopped off one of Robbie's fingers. Nova felt awful about this and later went to MIT to talk to his brother and ask for his forgiveness. Robbie said there was nothing to forgive and he would gladly give up more fingers if that's what it took for his brother to save lives.

Robert once earned a lot of money from selling a software program he designed. He used the money he earned from that to buy the Long Island home the Rider family used to live in. Robert's parents had previously been living in Jackson Heights, Queens.

While working as a scientist at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., Robbie was selected to reconstitute the new Nova Corps and was given Nova powers like Richard's. Robbie be-came friends with Darkhawk, with whom he worked at P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Even though Richard believed Robbie was among the members of the Nova Corps who sacrificed themselves in the Cancerverse, he instead had returned to Xandar in an attempt to jump-start the faded Nova Force. With no powers or a functioning ship, Robbie became stranded in the abandoned planet.

Six months afterwards, Robbie was attacked by a group of scavenging Raptors. Using a device called the Inquisitor, the Raptors regularly forced Robbie into a simulated virtual reality with which he was brainwashed into serving the Fraternity of Raptors. Rejecting his previous life, Robbie even refused to be called "Talon Rider," going instead by the alias of Talon-R.

In order to help the Raptors' goal of finding the Infinity Stones, Talon-R set out to find a set of Nega-Bands. Even though Talon-R secured a mummified corpse sporting Nega-Bands, his ship ended up in the hands of the Guardians of the Galaxy, who rechristened it as the Milano. Talon-R and his fellow Rap-tors eventually tracked down the Milano and boarded it, retrieving one of the Nega-Bands in the process. As he was making his es-cape, Talon-R poisoned Rocket Raccoon with the tip of his claws. Star-Lord used the other Nega-Band to confront and defeat Talon-R, and they struck a deal. Once Talon-R handed over the antidote, Quill was to give him the other Nega-Band. Star-Lord complied, but first opened a portal in which he threw the band. When Talonar jumped through the portal to follow the band, he found himself strand-ed in a distant planet where its inhabitants had been turned into Ultron hybrid zombies.

Talon-R had reunited with the Fraternity of Raptors by the time they attacked the Nova outpost in Xitaung where the giant-sized Power Stone was being guarded. During the attack, Talon-R encountered Rich, and berated him for the absence of the Nova Corps when he needed them. Their reunion was interrupted when they were both attacked by the Chitauri Warbringer, and Robbie was heavily hurt. Before being taken away by soldiers since the Raptors decided to retreat, Robbie made Rich realize of a way to reduce the Power Stone to a manageable size, by imposing one's cognition over reality. Star-Lord put this concept to practice, and the Guardians of the Galaxy managed to seize control of the stone.

Seeking to liberate the real Raptors from the Tree of Shadows, the Fraternity took Talon-R to the Shi'ar Outpost IV so he could open a doorway to the Null Space with the power of his Nega-Bands. To their surprise, the real Raptors were already free and no longer needed to bond with a living being to work, which prompted them to kill all the pretenders save for Talon-R, who used the Nega-Bands to protect himself. Needing a living being to serve as the willing tribute of a ritual that would unlock the true power of the Starhawk within their ranks, Commander Gyre convinced Talon-R to join them in their quest to bring order to the galaxy. With a subdued Chris Powell serving as the forced tribute, Gyre completed the ritual and transformed Talon-R into the Dark Starhawk.

Robbie and the Raptors planned to raze the Earth to eliminate their greatest threat, humanity, but they were confronted on the way there by Chris, Robbie's brother Nova, and Death's Head. Nova, horrified for discovering his brother was the Dark Starhawk, tried his best to reason with Robbie during the in-tense fight that broke out, but his words fell on deaf ears. Preferring to carry out his own version of order in the universe, Robbie killed Gyre and invited his brother to join the Raptors. When Death's Head exploded a Kree warp core, wiping out all the Raptors except for Robbie, Chris took the opportunity to reclaim his Raptor Amulet. Though heavily injured, Robbie somehow managed to hit his Nega-Bands together and vanished in a flash of light.

Robbie later assembled a new contingent of Raptors and obtained a new ship. He witnessed the Infinity Stones leave Earth after Adam Warlock gave them sentience and noted that one Stone remained on Earth and that the Raptors needed to find the Stones' new wielders.

When they got the chance, Robbie and the Raptors kidnapped the new wielder of the Time Stone, Hector Bautista. Robbie tortured Hector to make him hand over the Time Stone, but Hector had no means of summoning it and had no control over its power. Then the Raptors' ship was boarded by Wolverine, Loki, and the ghost dog Bats. Wolverine and Loki were soon subdued. So, Loki traveled back to Earth to retrieve Robbie's mother Gloria, hoping she could talk some sense into her son.

Robbie had Wolverine placed in an incinerator so he could claim Wolverine's adamantium skeleton, but Wolverine escaped thanks to Bats giving him his Time Bat. When Loki appeared with Gloria, Robbie thought it was one of Loki's illusions and mortally wounded his mother, realizing too late that she was real. Hector was able to re-verse this outcome after accidentally traveling several seconds into the past. Gloria then was able to talk Robbie down who claimed that he was looking for the Infinity Stones to reverse all the bad things that happened to their family. After reuniting with Wolverine, the Time Variance Authority appeared to arrest Hector for manipulating the time stream with the Time Stone (actually an illusion created by Loki), but Warbringer then unexpectedly appeared to take the Time Stone. Robbie quickly created a force field to prevent everyone from floating out into space through the hole Warbringer made in the Raptors' ship.

Robbie's force field held up, but Warbringer hit it with enough force to cause to go through the Raptors' ship. When Warbringer attacked again, Hector inadvertently froze time around him. After learning to better control his powers, Hector returned time to normal and froze time around Warbringer. When the damage Warbringer did to the ship was causing it to self-destruct, Loki created a portal for everyone to flee to Earth. After that, Gloria angrily told Robbie to get into their home so they could talk, but Robbie told her that he couldn't and flew off into space using the Nega-Bands.

I get the feeling that the Fraternity of Raptors was meant to give Darkhawk a kind of "Immortal Iron Fist" boost by elaborating the backstory, expanding the character mythos, etc. I think that while I'd consider Immortal Iron Fist a success, I don't feel the same about the Darkhawk retcon. To me it's just such a needlessly complex and pointless retcon to someone who already had an established backstory.

It was actually kind of nice that Darkhawk wasn't part of some grand cosmic conspiracy, some chosen prophecy, some mystical backstory, etc. He was just the byproduct of an intergalactic crimelord looking to create an effective, powerful and expendable type of servant. If they'd wanted to expand on that, it was possible, but the Fraternity of Raptors is basically a "everything you know is wrong" kind of retcon that I find needs to be done REALLY well in order to work, and I generally don't think that it does.

I mean, it could have been easy to work the Darkhawk into the cosmic scene. His amulet was someone unique being upgraded, and they could have had someone trying to continue the original crime-bosses work, having discovered several proto-amulets that simply encase the user in weaker Darkhawk-style armor, but still make them powerful and has the distinct look. Then they come to Earth looking to capture Chris to get his amulet and find out what makes it tick, Chris gets mistaken by the galactic authorities as being part of their group, plenty to do there.

Something else from the 90s I'd probably try to bring back would be the alien bio-armor War Machine wore for a time. It needed a look upgrade, but the concept was solid and it'd be a way to make use of something old while creating a new hero/heroine.

Wow, I had no idea Darkhawk's origins had changed. I kinda like the Shair connection, but the whole thing about swapping places with a robot? Eh.

I think I like Ares idea of weaker amulets that summon proto-darkhawk-armor, and just leaving it there, at more of a Green Lantern / Darkstar / Blue Beetle / Nova level of 'bunch of dudes powered by alien gizmos' better.

And wow, that's a well I had no idea until that last sentence had been tapped so many times...

While I enjoy Darkhawks expanded and updated background. Those new powers are a PITA. Essentially it's a mechanical form of Shapeshift where they can reallocate even abilities. In a M&M game this works fine. For this system, it's complicated.

I do like the idea that the amulet doesn't work right because at the time they were created, no one knew what a human even was. I was thinking this places the Fraternity back to the days of the original Guardians of the Galaxy (the kree life stone users), which would be back in ancient Egypt's heyday (Considering one of them is the KA stone from the Sphinx). I kinda want to know how the Amulet got to Earth then.

Overall I can't help but feel that there's a bunch of missed opportunities on Marvel's part with regards to Darkhawk and his origins.

TALENTS: Kryptonian Technology

CONTACTS: None

HISTORY
On Krypton, H'El believed he was a space explorer working for the great scientists Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, who he loved dearly as if they were his own parents. Unbeknownst to him, he was actually an illegal clone of several Kryptonians that was raised to believe he was naturally born. Despite his true origin, H'el was raised to despise clones, which were outlawed on Krypton.

When Jor-El became aware of Krypton's impending destruction, he constructed a prototype space-ship for H'El to escape in and tasked him to protect Krypton's history and knowledge among the stars.

However, the journey was a dangerous one. H'El survived many dangers and reached Earth twenty-seven years after Kal-El, the real son of Jor-El, had arrived.

With his mission to preserve Krypton's legacy, H'El studied the other Kryptonians that had come to Earth before engaging them for help. He watched watched Kal-El, Super-man's cousin Kara Zor-El, and Superman's Kryptonian-human hybrid clone Kon-El.

H'El at one point blew his cover when he attempted to exterminate Kon-El, identifying that he was not a true Kryptonian but a mere clone before the boy escaped. H'El followed Superboy to New York City where he once again attacked. Though Superboy had the help of the Teen Titans, H'El still bested them and abducted Kon-El, believing he'd prove useful in his ultimate plan for the Earth.

When his analyses were complete, H'El identified that his greatest potential ally was Kara Zor-El, going by the name Supergirl, believing that Kal-El had been too corrupted by Earth's ways to be an asset but was not irredeemable. H'El introduced himself to Supergirl, who was wary but open to his promise of bringing back Krypton, and granted her the ability to speak English.

H'El formally introduced himself to Superman in Metropolis' Centennial Park and attempted to explain his mission to his "little brother". However, Superman refused to believe H'El's story of restoring Krypton. H'El attempted to prove his loyalty to the House of El by executing his prisoner Superboy, an illegitimate member, but he was stopped by Superman before he could go through with it. H'El, disappointed that Kal truly did not share his vision for their planet, escaped to the Fortress of Solitude and reprogrammed it to use as his own. There, H'El worked with Supergirl, who was still on his side, in building the device that would bring Krypton back.

Though he was tricked into thinking Superman had a change of heart, H'El realized the hero's deception and defeated him and the Justice League, just in time to finish his device, which would consume so much energy that it would extinguish the Earth's sun. When Kara had realized the resurrection of Krypton meant the death of Earth, she rebelled against H'El, who forced her to make a choice be-tween the two planets she called home. Supergirl seemingly sided with H'El, lowering his guard long enough to stab him with a piece of Krptonite, finally defeating him.

H'El fell through one of the temporal rifts his machine created, sending him to Krypton several decades in the past, where he was discovered by a young Jor-El.

Waking up after six months in a coma, H'El, still stuck in the past, had discovered the truth of his origin - that he was not a true Kryptonian and was actually a clone of several people. Having grown up with so much disdain for clones, H'El's mind snapped, and he changed his goal to conquering Krypton, the planet that lied to him, rather than preserving it. H'El proceeded to enslave the entire planet in the past, destroying anyone who opposed him.

Because of H'El's actions radically changing the past, the Oracle separated H'El's Krypton into a different timeline to preserve the present. The Oracle then summoned Superman, Superboy, and Super-girl to go to H'El's dimension at different points in its history to undo the damage that he had caused.

Through the teamwork of all the heroes and Jor-El, they managed to fix H'El's timeline. In their final confrontation, Superman used his frost breath on H'El's chronal strands - his connection to the timeline - trapping him in a perpetual time loop, an eternal limbo.

Now that you mention it, with the "item of power that is meant to control the wearer" aspect combined with "what looks like basic armor instead allows the user to shapeshift into different forms" and "we're actually part of this larger alien network with it's own sinister agenda", it kind of feels like the Darkhawk retcon was borrowing heavily from the retconned Blue Beetle origin regarding the Reach and the scarabs.

Background:
Protex and his seven colleagues came to Earth several years ago, claiming to be the last survivors of a world that had been destroyed by geological upheaval an environmental irresponsibility. Vowing to never allow such catastrophe to even occur again, the Hyperclan allegedly journeyed through space for "a thousand gyres", seeking out planets in need of saving.

Protex exuded radiance and charisma that immediately endeared him to the people of Earth, but others, such as the members of the recently reformed JLA were dubious of his supposed good intents.

To prove his word to the people of Earth, Protex led the Hyperclan on an ambitious plan to terraform the barren Sahara Desert, transforming it into a vibrant, lush, paradise. Superman grew even more concerned over these supposed "miracle cures", citing that such a fast and dramatic change to the environment could have unpredictable, even disastrous implications in the future. His warnings went unheeded however, and the people of Earth denounced the Justice League in favor of Protex's team.

In short order, Protex insinuated his way into the public consciousness and even took dramatic steps to-wards improving American law enforcement. His Hyperclan began capturing and executing known criminals, ignoring standard practices such as due process. Even these seemingly controversial acts were met with great support.

Protex began erecting massive watchtower citadels all across the globe. One of the fortresses was actually an ancient Martian colony buried beneath the ice of Antarctica called Z'onn Z'orr.

At this point in time, nobody knew of the Hyperclan's Martian origins, not even the Justice League. It was generally accepted that the Martians were an extinct race and that the only known survivor of the red planet was the League's own Martian Manhunter.

This is what enabled Protex to orchestrate an alien invasion of the planet Earth. He had an armada of Martian warships tucked away in a hyperspace pocket called the Still Zone, ready to attack Earth at his order. A detachment of these Martians even made a proactive at-tempt to take out the previous in-carnation of the Justice League, destroying their satellite headquarters and nearly killing Metamorpho.

As tensions between the two teams heated up, it wasn't long before the Hyperclan and the Justice League came to blows. Protex approached the Martian Manhunter and tried to sway him into betraying the League and joining the Hyperclan. He had hoped to play on the Manhunter's feelings of isolation to win him over, but ultimately, the Man-hunter stood by his teammates. The rest of the Hyperclan engaged the other League members, ultimately capturing Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman.

Protex then fought against Super-man outside of Z'onn Z'orr. He realized that he didn't need to maintain any pretenses about being a global savior to the Man of Steel and quickly felled him when he produced a chunk of Green Kryptonite. Protex brought the weakened Superman into the fortress and bound him to a chair, forcing him to watch as he tortured the other captured League members in a device called the Flower of Wrath.

Superman eventually figured out that Protex was a Martian and that the Kryptonite he used to defeat him was really just a psychic projection that produced psychosomatic symptoms. Dispelling the illusion from his consciousness, Superman broke free of his restraints and fought Protex one on one. They exchanged blasts of heat vision vs. Martian vision, but when this proved ineffective, Protex shape-shifted into a cocoon and wrapped himself around Superman, hoping to smother him. Superman freed himself, and holding tight to Protex's body, drilled deeply into the Earth where he was able to overpower him.

The rest of the League freed themselves and defeated the remaining members of the Hyperclan. The Martian Manhunter gave Protex and the others a psychic lobotomy, erasing their memories and forcing them to assume mundane, humanoid forms. He then reprogrammed their brains with false memories and sent the Hyperclan members out into the world to join the human race.
