They shoved in a ton of toy characters (Tattoo, Groundchuck and Dirtbag, and Chrome Dome) that just get dealt with pretty quickly, and then other weird stuff like the Mini Technodrome (which I assume is meant to be the "Technodrome Scout" toy), the two-headed dragon Herman the Horrible, who was actually a robot being controlled by two of the Turtleoids because..they wanted Shell-Ri-La's gold? But they already would have had access to it.. Also despite all the toy characters being shoved in, the main plot concerns the Turtleoids and Herman the Horrible, that didn't have toys.
It reads very, very strongly like the writers or producers were told "Okay, we have to put ALL THESE GUYS in these episodes to sell the toys" and so they were given a recurring set of fights against Dirtbag & Groundchuck (who of course had to share all their screentime), Tattoo was given an insultingly short cameo at the beginning... and the writers spent all their time on the character with no toys. Like, it just reads as spite!

Splinter (Overview)

Post by Jabroniville »

SPLINTER:
-Splinter is naturally in every Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continuity. He is their teacher and adoptive father, and continues to act as a wise old mentor figure throughout. His personality is usually calm, serene and considerate, making him almost as uniform in personality as the four Turtles. In nearly every continuity, Hamato Yoshi was in a relationship with Tang Shen, and both were attacked by a jealous Shredder. However, the '80s toon removes this aspect entirely, and in many versions (including the original), Yoshi dies and Splinter is merely his pet rat, mutated into human form!

In the original Mirage Comics, Splinter is the pet rat of Yoshi, avenging him when he is killed. He is almost always an "at the base" character, and finally dies of a heart attack in a 2003 issue. However, it turns out that he's alive in the Battle Nexus, and the one who died was a temporary imposter (really? They're ripping off a 1960s X-Men twist?).

So in the '80s toon, Splinter IS Hamato Yoshi, and was exiled from the Foot by Shredder's underhanded tactics- he is later struck with Mutagen, turning him into a humanoid rat, and trains his four pet turtles in ninjitsu. Here, is is more of a teacher than a father. In Archie continuity, he was effectively the same as the 1980s Toon version, but once they stopped adapting cartoon episodes, he became a more active character, engaging in missions with his sons and even teaching April ninjitsu. The '90s movies more or less copy the Mirage original, and are arguably the best at portraying a serene, loving father-figure, though this version appears to be the most crippled and weak, being more crafty and clever than good.

In the 2003 Cartoon, Splinter is now grey-furred, and keeps the Mirage origins, carrying a grudge against the Shredder for Yoshi's murder. In the 2012 Nick Toon, he is more strict and serious than in other incarnations, but is the original Hamato Yoshi once more, having been mutated by the Kraang, along with his four songs. Tang Shen was killed in a fight against the jealous Oroku Saki, and Yoshi thought his daughter Miwa had died with her- it turns out in the big twist that his daughter survived, and was adopted by the Shredder as KARAI. This leads to several dramatic situations, as Karai has been trained to hate Yoshi. Splinter ultimately dies in battle with a mutated Super Shredder- his spirit appears before Leonardo and gives him the final Hero Point required to decapitate the Shredder, however.

In IDW Comics, he is established as being a reincarnation of the medieval-era Hamato Yoshi, who was murdered along with his four sons by Oroku Saki. Reincarnating as lab test subjects of Baxter Stockman's, they are mutated and move on. He becomes obsessed with defeating the Shredder at one point, but ultimately beats him in an ancient challenge, and serves as Shredder's second when he commits seppuku, slicing his head off. Shockingly, he accepted leadership of the Foot Clan from Karai, driving a wedge between him and his sons, even as he promises to make it more benevolent- they are horrified when he kills a foe or two, and ultimately he's forced to walk back from this dark path. Finally, he sacrifices his life to bring Shredder back so that he can defeat an even greater enemy- he is reunited with Tang Shen in the afterlife.

In Rise of the TMNT, Splinter is a short, plump rat, and is now laid-back and very lazy, absent-minded, and forgetful. They change pretty much EVERYTHING about the guy, even more than the other characters, by turning him into a comic, mischievous prankster who was once a world-famous martial arts film star, but can suddenly get serious when the Shredder is involved.

Prejudice (Freak)

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 12 / Defenses: 13 (127)

-Splinter of course received a TV show version, in a pretty unchanged form- he's still the Turtles' stoic, calm, wise mentor figure. However, they made a significant change in his origin story- rather than being some rat that mimicked his master's martial arts powers, he WAS the mutated Hamato Yoshi himself, making his battle with Oroku Saki much more personal. He's not quite as... fatherly as his other versions have proved to be, and instead is often just "the guy who hangs out at the base". Still, he has proven to be quite effective many times, and can outfight just about anybody (in one episode, he used the "Secret Technique That Only the True Leader of the Foot Clan Knows", which consisted of Three Stooges movements and sound effects- it paralyzed Shredder and defeated him). When the four Turtles were captured during The Night of the Rogues, it was Splinter who gathered together a small group of humans that allowed them to rescue his sons and save the day.

-His original toy kinda sucked, though- really shrimpy and with a fragile pink kimono that kinda got lost super-easily. Also he had a huge bow & arrow, along with other non-show-accurate weaponry. Though that kinda thing was pretty common with the early toys, who were released with "Weapon Sprues" that you had to take apart- giving you a lot of Shuriken, sticks and whatever those other blunt-ended two-pronged things were supposed to be.

-Splinter is a remarkably bad-ass warrior when he fights- in most episodes when he does so, he defeats foes the other Turtles would struggle to fight. The notion of "he's usually at home, but in a scrap he's the mightiest" extends throughout nearly every continuity, so this build works for many variations of the character. Probably the toughest version, however, is in the 2012 Nick Toon, where he is so bad-ass he takes multiple minions and Foot Ninjas all at once, defeats the PL 11-tier Shredder more than once, and even beats the Super Shredder- it's revealed that during the 4-on-1 sparring against his sons, he was ALWAYS holding back. They discover this to their horror when Splinter is mind-controlled into fighting them and DOESN'T restrain himself.

Other Splinter Toys: Creepy Crawlin' Splinter, Movie Star Splinter, Movie III Splinter, Mutatin' Splinter, Road Ready, Supermutant, Shogun, Next Mutation

I think the best demonstration of Splinter's ability was in one of his fights with Shredder in the 1987 cartoon; he lands a blow that has Shredder reeling ... and then pauses to crack a joke about what just happened. It communicates very clearly that he does not, in any way, view Saki as any sort of threat.

Exchanging 'was always a rat' to 'was once a man' makes some aspects of the Turtles situation more sensical, but shifts the nonsense in a different direction -- if the Turtles acquire human form from their contact with Yoshi, why doesn't that contact make Yoshi into a turtle rather than a rat? On the whole, I prefer the notion that Splinter was always a rat ... but that he was a rat who once lived in a place called Nimh.

Was Splinter caring for the turtles before their interaction with the ooze?, if not then I assume Splinter became a humanoid rat because he was either a rat who interacted with Yoshi or Yoshi who interacted with his pet rat and the turtles became humanoid due to their interaction with people at the pet store/the kid who bought them. I always preferred the idea that Splinter was Yoshi, even as a kid the idea of a rat leaning Ninjustu by watching his owner always seemed stupid to me, that includes the scene of him practising in his cage in the live action movie.

The general "rule" of the series was that someone would transform into whatever they were most recently in contact with... but Splinter says he was always hanging around rats (which never show up in the series again), so transformed into one of them. Even though he'd most recently been in contact with the turtles.

So you get weird stuff like shredder stealing a rhino & warthog to transform Rocksteady & Bebop (they're chained to something and the animals run into the room). But said mutated villains are responsible for Groundchuck & Dirtbag being turned into humanoids, because they were present when they were mutated.

Which begs the question of why Groundchuck & Dirtbag didn't transform into rhino/warthog-mutants too, but the show is pretty weird about that. Generally speaking, every animal transformers into a humanoid, and only a few humans gain animal features (like Leatherhead).

Yeah thinking about it, it would make for some pretty weird mutations if animals did mutate into hybrids.

And he's ready to wreak havoc on the Foot Clan. All because Shredder slopped Retromutagen Ooze over his jungle gym. After wandering through the muck, this soldier of misfortune mutated with a hairy gorilla. Now he's a gorilla guerilla. Or is that guerilla gorilla? In any case, he's gonna swing into civilization and sway through the sewers to help the Turtles put an end to the Foot Clan's reign of terror. With the aid of his pesky primate pal, Larry the Lemur, Sergeant Bananas is just crazy enough to use his iguana gun at the first sight of trouble. So stand back-Sergeant Bananas isn't monkeyin' around!

-A character I always thought was called "Guerilla Gorilla" (apparently, that was his name in a TMNT Magazine), Sgt. Bananas is one of the better-looking "Non-Show" figures. The figure is well-detailed, colorful and comes with some solid accessories. And like a lot of side figures, he comes with a monochromatic "Sidekick"- Larry the Lemur, who has a punk hairstyle and is... completely blue? Now THAT's a peculiar color choice, given they could have gone with anything.

Jabroniville wrote: Thu May 13, 2021 9:31 pm THE DAIMYO
Role:
Mysterious Good Guy, Battle Nexus Leader
This trio showcased a fun aspect of the 2003 TMNT. The fact that they made the Shredder an Utrom showed they were willing to play with aspects of the lore. The Ultimate Ninja/Daimyo/Drako showed they were more than willing to add to the lore in some very fun ways. The Battle Nexus is this really fun concept, the idea of this interdimensional fighting tournament where the best warriors in the multiverse show up to battle. I wonder if it isn't a nod to the old TMNT fighting games from the 90s. That it also allowed the Turtles to meet Miyamoto Usagi was an extra bonus.

Drako was a simple "I want power and revenge" villain, but he was pretty entertaining. The show reveals he's the one responsible for Splinter's injured leg and why Splinter walks with a cane in the TMNT series. When Splinter and Drako meet up after several years, Drako's first response is, "Greetings, rat. How's the leg" with this complete douche-bag smirk on his face that makes it very punchable.

Ue-Sama was interesting, showing up first as this kind of prideful martial arts master challenging Leo after the turtle had defeated the Shredder. The whole episode was a modern martial arts version of the old western films where a young gun challenges the more experienced fighter, and the young gun loses (they even show that kind of film within the episode). Leo comes out on top, but it's a solid fight. Later episodes make it clear that the Ultimate Ninja is something of a spoiled prince, believing it's his turn to rule and having let arrogance and pride get the better of him. He's pretty much exactly what Thor was like during the start of the first MCU Thor film (back when Thor was a character and not a joke). His whole reason for working with Drako is to get revenge on Leo and to gain the power and rank he believes he deserves. Eventually when given the chance to attain that power by killing his father, he ultimately can't bring himself to do it, and before dying he begs his father for forgiveness.

Thankfully, Lord Simultaneous is able to restore the Ultimate Ninja to life, giving him a chance to start over as a young boy. It's actually kind of adorable when this little kid version of the Ninja is restored and immediately hugs his dad, claiming that "he had a terrible dream". Later on, the young child speaks with Leonardo, saying that he remembers him and asking, "Did we play together?" Leo just kind of awkwardly says "Yeah, we did", before the little boy decides that he'll be Leo's friend then.

The Daimyo serves as a kind of Odin-like figure that no one can directly oppose, but can be taken down through treachery. He also gets thoroughly heartbroken at the death of his son, but his restoration brings him back to full form. The Daimyo also had a sense of humor, as the picture Jab used is from a Christmas episode where the Daimyo dressed up in Christmas theme to help out with spreading some holiday cheer to an orphanage.

The Battle Nexus episodes were usually a lot of fun, had some solid fights, and gave the characters time to shine in different ways. Mikey of all people got to show off what happens when he's serious when he has a re-match with Kluh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aASXzc6wR9E

Seriously, I love that combo Mikey pulls off at around the 1:50 mark.

Bummer Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Hun leads a street gang that runs a protection racket, among other things.
Enemy (Casey Jones)- Hun & Casey's rivalry goes way back.
Enemy (The Turtles)- Hun's defeats at the hands of the Turtles have left him humiliated, and frequently punished by the Shredder.
Rivalry (Karai)- Hun hates the Shredder's daughter, and openly wants her dead.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 12 (113)

-Hun was the 2003 cartoon's version of Rocksteady & Bebop, in that he was Shredder's chief lackey, but he was a much different sort of character. Rather than a bumbling buffoon, he was a competent, serious man, but still a punching bag for the main heroes, often being knocked off of something, to which he would respond "oh, crud". He was Shredder's protege and the leader of the Purple Dragons gang, sending him into a rivalry with vigilante Casey Jones, but he racked up loss after loss over time- the thing that befouls a lot of mid-tier villains in TV shows like this (Greg Weisman in Gargoyles ramped up "The Pack" with modifications in response to this). Eventually, he discovered that his respected boss was actually an alien Utrom- disgusted, he asked his rival Karai how she could serve someone like that, and broke off the Purple Dragons from the Foot Clan, forming them into a Foot-like criminal syndicate.

-Peter Laird was initially not a fan of Hun, but liked how the character developed and so included him in the Mirage Comics. A guy named Hun shows up in the 2012 Nick Toon as a recurring background nemesis- dressing and acting like Bruce Lee, he is still the gang leader of the Purple Dragons, and an affiliate of Shredder's, low on the food chain. He gets into a rivalry with Casey Jones and appears in four episodes, becoming increasingly Jobber-y with each passing one. And then he showed up in IDW's comics... but as Casey's father! Arnold Jones is an abusive alcoholic and an ex-gang member, but is led by Shredder into taking some Mutagen and becoming super-strong.

-Hun is a very big, very strong man who is nonetheless a Jobber To The Stars (to use the wrestling parlance): He can be normal people just fun, but against the main heroes he's usually toast. Though even the TMNTPedia openly cracks wise about how "However, his power level, as it is, has been inconsistently portrayed throughout the series: although sometimes he is able to hold his own against all four Turtles (in their first fight against him, he actually overpowered them, they were only saved by Casey Jones), at other times, he is able to be defeated by a single fighter. Generally, he is defeated more easily in the later episodes as he appears in the series, presumably due to the Turtles' increasing skills." He's a competent, skilled criminal otherwise, but is somewhat limited in scope.

Hun was apparently also the one who mutilated Baxter Stockman for each failure, leading to hatred between the two.

Interestingly enough I actually did add the NIMH scenario into my TMNT universe,. NIMH was a genetics company whose work on mice and rats led to more then a dozen rats and mice becoming more intelligent and gaining limited anthropomorphic characteristics

Splinter was one of the first group that escaped with Jonathans help but was separated from the group he ended up picked up by Yoshi who took him home when he realized how smart the rat was. Splinter did learn from watching Yoshi practice and events unfolded as such

the mutatgen the turtles were exposed to basically accelerated Splinters mutation making him larger and more humanoid
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

There two more elements to the 2003 version of Hun that are relevant to his characterization.
1) He served to justify Casey's one-man gang-war, since the original Mirage characterization boiled down to "he's unhinged and decided to kick punks' asses after watching too much TV".
2) Hun has actually a pretty big secret that got revealed in the final season: he's a massive gamer and regularly plays a not-World of Warcraft style MMO. At the end of the episode he ever start to team up with Mikey in game.

Splinter was one of the first group that escaped with Jonathans help but was separated from the group he ended up picked up by Yoshi who took him home when he realized how smart the rat was. Splinter did learn from watching Yoshi practice and events unfolded as such
