And now for the ANIMALS in Rifts Underseas! The book actually has one of the largest menageries in any of the books, likely because it was the best place for all the kewl sharks. I mean, they could have saved stuff for Rifts Lemuria, which is promised literally a dozen+ times in this book, but... that one didn't come out until TWENTY FREAKING YEARS LATER.

Complications:
Responsibility (Storytellers)- Dragon Rays love to tell stories (both tall and real), and can be easily distracted by doing so.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 26 + Psionics / Defenses: 12 (119 + Psionics)

-Thrown into the bestiary ("Creatures of the Deep" it says), the Dragon Ray is actually more of a super-powered PC thing. Drawn with Randy Post's oddly photo-realistic (ie. "tracing") style, it's a slender, legless creature with bony wings and a tail- a combination of seahorse and Dragon. Said to avoid their own kind, they are nonetheless gregarious enough to inhabit human habitations, often becoming beloved members of the community, helping out any way they can. They help marine navigation, watchin for threats, fight off monsters, etc., but are incorrigible storytellers, often ignoring all else so they can chat.

-Dragon Rays can be fairly durable, but their MDC is linked to their Physical Endurance (Stamina) much more strongly than most MDC creatures, meaning they can be highly variable. They don't have the toughness of many Dragons, nor are they anywhere near as versatile (most don't learn magic). They're good fighters with great bonuses to hit, but three attacks only. So anyone expecting a Dragon-Class being will be disappointed.

-Rifts Underseas includes MDC upgrades to the Giant Octopus & Giant Squid (said to be around the same size- the octopus is smaller than a human being in reality), though because MEGA-DAMAGE IS DUMB, these are barely toughness increases at all over the baseline stats. However, they are much better and more damaging fighters, turning Octopi into PL 10 combatants, and Squids (with EIGHT attacks total!) into PL 11s. Humourously, Fatal & Friends laughs at the idea that they can "Sense Magnetic North", but Cephalopods do in fact have a directional sense.

Picasso Magic Fish

PICASSO MAGIC FISH
Role:
Magical Fish
PL 2 (49), PL 8 (49) in Ley Lines
STRENGTH
-5 STAMINA -4 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING 1 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Close Combat (Bite) 4 (+5)
Expertise (Survival) 5 (+5)
Intimidation 11 (+12 Size)

Advantages:
Fearless, Improved Critical (Bite), Improved Initiative

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 4 (Extended 2 & Acute Scent, Low-Light Vision) [4]
"Bite" Strength-Damage +4 [4]

"Sea Creature"
Swimming 2 (4 mph) [2]
Immunity 1 (Drowning) [1]

"Small Size" Shrinking 12 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) [25]
(-3 Strength, -1 Speed, +6 Defenses, +12 Stealth, -6 Intimidation)

"Consume Ley Line Energy"
Protection 11 (Flaws: Source- Ley Lines) [6]
Morph 1 (Scarier Form) (Flaws: Source- Ley Lines) [4]
Enhanced Skills 6 (+3) (Flaws: Source- Ley Lines) [2]
Senses 2 (Analytical Taste) [2]
Swimming +2 (Flaws: Source- Ley Lines) [1]

"Psionics" (Bio-Regeneration, Turn Invisible- Ley Lines Required)

Offense:
Unarmed +2 (-5 Damage, DC 10)
Bite +5 (-1 Damage, DC 14)
Initiative +6

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness -4 (+7 Ley Line Energy), Fortitude +1, Will +1

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Piranha cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Frenzied)- Piranha are legendary for their rapid eating habits (though this is exaggerated). Still, it is quite possible for one to be devoured if it's injured during a frenzy.
Disabled- Fish require water to survive, and will die quickly if left out of it.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Piranha are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Piranha effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -20 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 6 (49)

-These curious creatures are small fish that feed off of Ley Line energy, giving themselves superpowers when they do so- mostly to look intimidating to predators. Largely created as flavor text, I quite like them- not there to kick ass, but to add to the setting's diversity and be of use in magical devices and stuff.

Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +18 (+6 Impervious), Fortitude +10, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation (Evil)- Lorica Wraiths are totally evil and enjoy torturing and killing sentient beings.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 83 + Psionics / Defenses: 13 (177 + Psionics)

-One of Kevin Siembieda's bland old "Shockingly Evil/Loves to Torture" monsters, Lorica Wraiths are just generic monsters you shouldn't feel bad for killing. There's a few interesting bits, though- it's one of the most Power-Gamed things in here, with the potential for THOUSANDS of MDC (something like 4D6x100!!), "Automatic Dodge" (the Palladium God Stat), and ridiculous bonuses to hit AND defend! The damn thing hits PL 14 in M&M stats, just because of the defenses and his insane toughness! It also does a ton of damage, has Psionics, and even some of the whales' Ley Line Channeling stuff. It's "only" PL 11 offensively, though. But having 3-4 times the health of a Dragon Hatchling counts for a lot.

-It also features in one of those funny "Erin Tarn" bits Kevin likes to throw in there, as she shows up at a random town, is of course threatened by a monster... and is saved by the Coalition! Because of course she's just an innocent-looking human lady, and it's a human town, and the D-Bee monsters are killed by heroic Coalition soldiers. A neat little bit of nuance to the setting, as to a CS person... the Dead Boys are the HEROES of the setting. Though as the Fatal & Friends people note, Erin Tarn kind of just stumbles luckily from rescue to rescue like this, which kind of defeats some of the impact of having one of the more progressive, unique main heroes in RPGs (not a lot of companies had "generic-looking old lady" as their signature NPC in the 1990s, let me tell you).

Defenses:

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Sea Maws cannot speak to humans, nor use their flippers to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 88 / Defenses: 25 (99)

-The Sea Maw is not a true predator; rather, it is a Blue Whale-sized monstrosity that simply "gulps" up anything in its path, which can often include sentient beings, mini-subs, or whales! It had thousands and thousands of MDC (Physical Endurance x1000). It's close enough to a Blue Whale that I barely had to alter its stats- just elevated its average toughness to +22.

-Zomba are ultra-powerful sea scavengers, said to be a recurring nuisance that hitches a ride onto ships in order to eat their fishing nets, cargo, or crew. They are super-durable and "will stand their ground", meaning they're a Siembiedan "Will fight to the death, because Kevin doesn't understand animals" creature. They have a huge bonus to attack (+6), and do Rail Gun damage with their bites, making them PL 11s.

Stidjron

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

Once Kevin's ready for layout, he prints out the whole mess and fires up his wax machine because he still puts these damned things together by hand. What's that? Desktop publishing software? Naw, he's faster without it! (snip) Where this really makes you want to bang your head against the tip of an artillery shell is when he lays out 80% of the book, discovers that he'd like to rename an alphabetically ordered item on page 5 and decides that it would be too much work to reflow the rest of the list. You know how every so often in a Palladium book you'll have a series of NPCs or OCCs or something and one of them is grossly out of alphabetical order? That's why. I used to think it was because Kevin couldn't read the alphabet. Now I know it's because he's truly, madly, deeply in love with putting books together in ways that even Monty Burns would decry as old-fashioned.
-Bill Coffin, explaining things like why a "Stidjron" appears in the alphabetical listing of Monsters AFTER the "Zomba".

Disabled (Blind)

-Stidjron are another Siembiedan "Super-Evil Predator", with the observation that they kill for pleasure as well as food, often attacking outposts full of sentient creatures just to slaughter everyone there. This makes them beloved by sharks, who frequently follow in their wake. This activity explains some "ghost ships". Stidjron are said to be of low-sentient intelligence, but might just be too alien to truly understand.

LOL, I wonder if anyone's even reading these Bestiary bits- given how long they take, I might otherwise just dump them, but sometimes I feel like a completist.

I read em, but unfortunately my internet time was limited until recently, and a lot of the bestiary bits wind up being "another remorseless predator" and "Mega-Damage is stupid".

Same here. It's always interesting to me to see some else's take on familiar material.
