OOC wrote:Diego - Trying to follow vehicles, like he is now, will always leave Diego behind. He isn't fast enough. There are two possibilities here. Either John will try to use the route you established leading out of Ward 8 to bypass check points, or he will head toward the quickest way out which will take him towards checkpoints. This gives Diego an idea of where they are heading.

If John is using the mission-established route out of the Ward, he will have to come back up this main street ... which Diego blocked up with the car crash. If they are taking the most direct route out, they will run into a checkpoint and will need a distraction to get by. Either way, Diego can move position to get there ahead of them since he is unimpeded by traffic and buildings.

Duncan - Duncan remembers seeing the flying woman lift an SUV in the underground garage with some kind of energy.

Iona - Not all that long ago, she used her control over magnetism to lift an SUV. A motorcycle with two people on it would weigh less. Iona also realizes that she is moving faster than the speeds she has witnessed the drones and most cars moving at. Though she likely wouldn't be able to outrun a helicopter, she has a narrow window of time before it arrives which she could exploit.
The behind the fleeing motorcycle and the flying electrokinetic android, the Stronghold soldiers have gotten their borrowed vehicle going. A sharp sea mist colored Sedan. While John and Duncan are getting bogged down in the increasingly chaotic traffic, the professional driver at the wheel of this vehicle weaves skillfully around the discord, finding unobstructed routes through it all. This allows them to rapidly catch up with the escapees, and brings the vehicle in line with Iona. Not only does the driver manage to get a his gunner a clear line of fire, he provides a steady platform from which to aim his attack. With his large machine gun braced up on the windowsill the gunner unleashed a torrent of lead on Iona.

OOC wrote:Because John was slowed down, and the Driver of Confiscated Car #4 passed their Vehicles check so they are unimpeded by traffic, they are able to catch up. Confiscated Car #4 is now 50 feet away.

The Driver maneuvers the car into an advantageous position (Aid) to support the Gunner.

The Gunner fires their heavy machinegun at Iona. It hits. Iona needs to make a DC 23 Toughness check.

Diego, Duncan, and Iona are up.

Even at their full power, Stronghold was in position to bring impressive numbers to bear on them plus had the resolve. Right now, all Stronghold knew, or so Diego thought, was Iona had powers. They were electric based and she was sort of android like in using them so Diego could pass that off as rogue android of Dr. Sokolov if he got the spin right and the rumours going. Further thinking through the situation as he flew, Diego also knew that Iona was a big target and she had the case. The longer she supported John and Duncan, the higher the chance she might be taken out. Without a line of communication to her to just bolt with the bike if she could, there wasn't much commanding Diego could do at this point.

No matter the outcome now, Diego knew he was in for a world of hurt. Visions of his previous tortures still haunted him. If they can get the plant out that may help mitigate the situation and the rest he could try to spin. Solutions, not just problems. Of immediate concern was getting into position to make a distraction so forces nearer the check point plus incoming forces might be drawn to him somewhat. Iona was a nuke. There was no taking all attention off her. If she took off without John and Duncan though all equipment might just focus on him if he went big enough while still masking the full extent of his powers.

Iona was a threat, but so was those monsters outside the walls. If an infestation started popping up it might warrant some checking out for containment. The alternative was showing his more liquid form which he wasn't keen to do now. To get into proper shape, he had to find the right place. Not too open and hopefully outside of camera view near a sewer entrance maybe to shift into something resembling the creatures at the hospital. He'd also need to pick out a spot that afforded him quick strike on civilians.
Double move to get into position if needed or single move if perception to see a good spot counts as a move.
Beggars can't be choosers, so in order of priority he'd be looking for is a safe place to shift out of view, civilian targets, and sewer or similar type that the creatures might appear from.

Iona
HP: 0
Cnd: Bruised (-3 to DCs); Fatigued
PP:0

The young cyborg knows that something more drastic must be done. Stronghold is closing in quickly and every few minutes of delay brings even more powerful assets against her teammates.

Her typically beautiful exterior, only slightly concealed by what remains of her shredded clothing, is riddled with bullet-holes. Still, she manages to maintain her flight position just above John and his motorcycle. Looking down she yells to them, "Just keep driving at the same speed and don't swerve! Hold on tight!"

With those commands, Iona attempts to utilize the e-field component of her powers in an unorthodox way, using it to create a magnetic field about the motorcycle in order to lift it off the street and take it with her.
OOC: Iona will create a Move Object power that is Precise and Subtle 1. I'm not sure if the points available to create it would break caps, but obviously she will go as high as the PL will allow. If John is not trying to dodge her power and thus allowing me to do it, do I need a roll? Just let me know if I do. I'm now adding the "Fatigued" Condition above. Iona will then proceed to her Move Action.
Once the cycle along with it's riders are off the ground, Iona accelerates to her top speed.
OOC: With herself and the cycle a good 30 feet off the ground, she will occasionally fly higher to avoid power lines and other obstacles. But her goal is to always stay between buildings, if possible. She does not want the helicopter off in the distance to be able to keep visual contact with her, so she will use structures to hide her position as much as possible. Her ultimate goal is to use her Standard action to move as well in order to really boost the ground she can cover. Iona will proceed to move on a route back to the base the way they originally came. Is it dark outside?
Here's Iona's Flight roll: Supernaturalist: D20 + 6 → 13(7 + 6). So, a total of 13.
Here's Iona's Athletics Roll: Supernaturalist: D20 → 1919. So a total of 19. Apparently she gets a +1 to her Speed.
Here is the Alternate Effect created by Iona's Power Stunt: Move Objects 12 [Extras: Precise (+1 pp), Subtle 1 (+1pp) ; Flaws: Limited to "Magnetic Materials" (-1/r)] * 14 PP

Reaching out with invisible forces Iona lifts the speeding motorcycle from the ground, and both Duncan and John with it. For the two men it is almost as if they never left the ground. At least at first. Then Iona accelerates. In the blink of an eye they're rounding the corner and racing back down the main street. Back on course to follow the route you planned to take to and from the base. On the way you see three cars with men in them carrying assault rifles. You pass them, as they were on their way to intercept you. Further down the street is a pile up of crashed cars, blocking off the main road. But this does not hinder the flying android or the flying motorcycle in her wake.

Diego decides to give up the chase when he realizes that he cannot keep up with the cars. Instead he floats through the shadows to a manhole cover and prepares to provide a distraction he hopes will draw attention to himself and away from the others. It is just before he shifts into a solid state that he sees a bloody Iona come flying around the corner, and down the main street. Not far behind her is a flying motorcycle with John and Duncan on it. The three, lead by the android, take a turn into an alley about a block away, past the car wreck Diego engineered earlier, and disappear from sight. They look to be trying to keep to the route you established for your trip back to the base.

Though it is night time, Ward 8 is full of the light and life you would find in any major city. Iona sticks relatively close to the ground, just heigh enough to avoid cars and power lines. Though Iona still tries to use shadows, and dips into alleyways to try to break contact with the helicopter. Though the ground vehicles that had been perusing her and her comrades have disappeared into the distance the helicopter has not. It is always there. Getting closer. Iona and her passengers rapidly approach the edge of the Ward, slip through a narrow walkway between buildings too thin to support the passage of cars and trucks. Coming out the other side Iona, John, and Duncan can see checkpoint stations to the North and South as they head West.

Their exit from Ward 8 does not go unnoticed, as two armored, urban camo pained, sports cars with heavy machine guns mounted on their roofs pull away from the barricades at the check point. The two chase vehicles quickly pick up speed as they race towards the flying woman and her airborne motorcycle riding companions.

OOC wrote: To answer your question, Supernaturalist, it is night time. Past 8 PM. By default, it is dark. However, there is artificial lighting. This is a well restored part of the city. Lights are everywhere. Vehicles have lights. There are street lights. Building windows are projecting light into the area. There are shadows, yes, but it is not so dark as to impair normal vision.

Iona is well past the the four Confiscated Cars, and the Stronghold Soldiers driving them. She has failed to out maneuver the helicopter, which is still gaining on her.

Make a Flight check. This is 1.) to see if Iona can shake the helicopter [you need to beat it 2 out of 3 times in opposed checks, so you need to beat it twice in a row to loose the 'copter] and 2.) to see if you can out maneuver the 2 Chase Vehicles that are trying to intercept you.

If you can think of a way to help Iona out maneuver the antagonists, John and Duncan may make Aid/Team checks to assist her. The Trait used for the check will depend on what they do to assist her.

Diego is presently lurking in the shadows, prepared to enact his monster scare. He has no accurate information on where the others are at this point. Though they appeared to be following your pre-planned route ack to base. He does see the four Confiscated Cars heading West. A helicopter is now in sight and looks to be heading West as well.

John Steiner
HP:0
Cnd:Normal
PP:

John had endured two separate instances of utter helplessness today. First, he'd been on his knees with his hands behind his head, praying to whatever war-god he worshiped that he wouldn't be shot. Second, he had fled clumsily in a motorcycle, that he was barely competent to drive, all the while being chased by high-tech drones and professional pursuit-cops. He was only alive right now because some hot-looking artificial chick was doing all the fighting for him. This didn't do wonders for his ego. He'd been reacting to threats for quite some time today. Now it was time to be proactive.

"Don't be alarmed at what I'm about to do.", he says to Duncan in a raised voice tinged with an icy ruthlessness. Drawing the pistol from his jacket, he points down and behind his "flying motorcycle".

Taking aim at the windshields of the various cars below, he begins to squeeze off round after round after round.
OOC: John will indiscriminately begin to shoot out the windows of cars below in an attempt to cause wreck (or at the very least to cause people to stop). and clog traffic. Here's a roll: I'm not sure if you want to count it as an Attack or an Aid: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 10(2 + 8). Meh, a total of 10. I'm not sure if that will help.

If Iona was escaping the way he thought she was, Diego needed to get that helicopter off her somehow. Simply causing a scene with a monsters sighting might draw the chase vehicles. Some of them maybe. No, if he was going to get her some way to lose the helicopter he'd need to take it out. With its speed, he'd have one chance. Simply exposing his powers and failing on a long shot was rife with peril. There was another way. A stupid way. Anyone ever served would tell you it was awesome in movies, but stupid in real life. These same people weren't Ascendents.

Diego high tailed it to a roof he figured the helicopter would need to get close. Close enough to be jumpable onto with the proper propellent. By chance, he spied a perfect candidate. It was a large spare fuel tank for generators being used as back ups for the building. With a proper spark, it might go up spewing rubble everywhere and giving him something to ride on to the helicopter. More stupid ideas, but from people. Diego was above that now. He was an Ascendent.

Upon arrival near the edge of the building, he took advantage of the edge to solidify into the costume similar to Snake Eyes black costume minus the face covering. He wanted Stronghold and everyone else to see the face of a 30 year old ripped Stallone mixed with Chuck Norris complete with the beard. For added effect, he formed a combat knife in his teeth. Timing was going to be crucial. Off just a little and he'd hit a building or fall to the ground. Hit and he could take down the copter.

When the moment approached, he scraped some sharpened fingers along the ground and cut into a line leading to the fuel tank. Flame raced from the opening of the line to the main tank. No turning back now. Five...he steadied himself. Four...he eyed his target. Three...he pulled the knife out to him latch. Two...he flipped it over. One...he thought of nothing except his target. Zero...boom!

The flame hit the tank and as Diego had hoped the energy from the explosion blew the roof to pieces and with it the edge he was waiting. Anyone in the street or air would see the GI Joe Stallen Norris ninja flying through the air on a chunk of the building leap towards the helicopter combat knife at the ready. They were at their last resorts and he wasn't going to go to Praetor Null and say he ran away. The papers the next day and viral videos would talk about a woman who flew and idiot who jumped from a blowing building with a knife at a helicopter.

As he got closer, Diego tried his hardest to get a grip on the helicopter or get his morphed knife into it. He was going too fast though. In his native or liquid form he might have had better luck, but he wanted to play this as straight as possible. His solid body slammed into the side of the helicopter and thanks to Preator Nulls blessings he was able to not die. It was the fall where he started to think of what Praetor Null would think. Yes he had joined the battle and came back when Iona had taken off leaving him no way of getting the others. On the other hand he had nearly died in the fall. If he could only get to the shadows...

Over the streets of Hadron City and between the buildings of the metropolis, the damaged cyborg flies. If she had ferfect, unblemished skin at one time, no one could tell it now. But her mind is not on the damage she has sustained, but instead narrowly focused on getting her team back to base as quickly and safely as possible.

Her systems strain under the effort. Already, her power-levels are not recharging faster than she is depleting them. But there is no time to rest...not yet. There is one consolation. The darkness of night. But to take advantage of it, she must reach a part of the city not patrolled by Stronghold and not trafficed by the iphone-carrying citizens of the city. Before even that, she must escape her pursuers. Like the proverbial fox trying to elude the hounds, she must rely on speed and cunning. Neither alone will save her.
OOC: Iona will obviously try to continue her strategy of flying just high enough to avoid obstacles (but no higher). She needs to stay nap-of-the-Earth in order to break contact with the chopper. I'm going to include the rolls you asked for next. Here's the Flight roll with John's bonus: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 27(19 + 8). Ok, that was pretty good. A total of 27. Here's the Athletics check to try and maintain a +1 to my Fight rank: Supernaturalist: D20 → 22. Uh...that would be a no. A total of 2. I'm a little confused because I rolled a 2, but when I post it says 22. The 22 is wrong, the 2 is the correct number. So, it looks like my Flight rank is unmodified.

The roof of a small business explored in a fiery conflagration. The only section spared destruction is the fragment Diego is standing on at the edge of the roof. This, along with the Ascendant, are thrown up into the air at ballistic speeds. Diego doesn't just collide with the helicopter, he smashed through it! He must have hit a fuel line because as he begins his downward fall, the helicopter explodes overhead raining metal shrapnel on the rooftops and street below. Diego himself lands without grace, making a muffled Wump! as his form compresses and structural damage sends pain racing through him.

On the sidewalks people are screaming. Cars honk and steer wildly to avoid panicking pedestrians and the shower of helicopter parts alike.

In the distance Iona, Duncan, and John see a fireball erupt in the sky, accompanied by a resounding BOOM!. Iona, at least, knows that this was the helicopter that had been pursuing her. What had actually happened, she has no idea. Behind the airborne android John blasts away at the windshields of civilian cars. This leaves a tide of chaos in their wake as vehicles steer jerkily to avoid being shot at and others crash into all manner of targets. From other vehicles, to buildings, and even pedestrians. It is horrible. But it does create the distraction Iona needs.

In the flurry of violent activity Iona peels off the road and ducks into a a construction site where a skyscrapre is undergoing major restoration work. One of the waypoints in the route back to the HQ. She flies into the building and, on her way out the back, Iona notices a familiar face leaning up against the front of a black van. A older man with a short flattop, no sideburns, and a thick mustache. His hair salt and pepper. His skin sun kissed and leathery. It was Sergeant Hendrick Kreppler. Your chief of security at the base. In one hand he held a paper cut with a beverage that steamed in the chilly night air.

OOC wrote:Diego disables the helicopter.

Iona is able to evade the two Chase Vehicles.

Given that Diego destroyed the helicopter, John caused massive chaos in the streets, and Iona rolled really well on her opposed check, I am giving you an out: Tilly, expecting the worst, sent someone to intercept you on your trip home.

Dr.Duncan Redwood

Getting off the bike, he'll stagger over to the guy leaning on the Van. Taking the paper cup from his hand, Duncan'll down it instantly(not even caring if it burn's going down) and, after leaning his head against the van hood, will say
"Please, for the Love of God, tell me we have the Mater! Tell me you crazy people didn't set my life on Fire like it was a dumpster in a Riot just for Shit's & Giggles...."
OOC: here's my Fortitude check for the McRonny's Coffee(which is in no way, shape or form a reskined McDonald's. Why do you ask?)...
Fortitude check:13+2=15--Fail by three, so that's a minus one(?) to stuff 'cause of mild Throat irritation(and it explains why he leaned his head on the Van hood)...

His crazy idea worked and by some stroke of luck he wasn't killed by it. With all the other chaos going on around him, Diego hobbled in a stupor he didn't know he could fall into towards a dark alley. People rushed about him, panicked at the debris of the plane, with some taking note of the the now wounded crazy man who took on a helicopter with a knife. The threat of falling helicopter parts has a way of making people not stare too long. Cameras would catch him, but what did Diego care? It was a one off face that he'd use for propaganda later to shift the blame of the whole mess on to some other group.

Praetor Null would surely punish him ruthlessly, but Sokolov's interference combined with mitigation plans of faking another group like the Reapers taking credit for the attack might spare him a little. That Cowboy, whoever he was, must have been working for the doctor. Diego would need to track him down and get some answers. Dr. Sokolov was untouchable by Diego, unless given leeway by Praetor Null he'd likely not get now. It didn't mean he couldn't take information and physical security measures back at the base. Iona or her paranoid protective robot detail were also likely points of Sokolov getting the information on the op if that was the reason the Cowboy was there.

Once he got to sufficient shadows and out of camera line of sight as best he could tell, Diego shifted into his native form. It still hurt, but at least he could slink slowly through the shadows in the hopes of finding Iona along the preplanned escape route. Before he was laid up for a week or more, Diego would need to get his orders given if he was even still in charge of the base. After all the noise they had made, it wouldn't be without justification to strip Diego of any authority.

Wary at first of the individual standing by the black van, Iona relaxes when she recognizes the face of Kreppler with her keen eyes.

Gently she descends and places both her feet and the magnetically levitated motorcycle on the ground. Her power-supply now slowly begin to provide more energy to some of her systems than they were consuming. If she were a human, she would start to feel the sensation of recuperation and recovery from her recent exertions.

Sergeant Kreppler…” she says, her voice as soft as always, “…thank you for meeting us here. I’m relieved that you were dispatched to aid us. Stronghold will no doubt continue their search for us, and perhaps be in this area soon, scouring it for our presence. Do you feel like its safe to return to base now or should we concern ourselves with hiding until the Stronghold search dies down?

Not waiting for the Sergeant to answer the question, she holds up the specimen case for him to see. “I’m concerned that this container may have some form of tracer device. It needs to be opened and the possibility of a tracker determined before it is taken to base. Are we remaining here or moving to a new location?
OOC: Ok, I have no idea what Kreppler is going to suggest. But I’ll assume that I’ll need to make a Technology roll at some point to deal with the case. I don’t have any tools on me to open it or deactivate anything, but I do have an idea. Iona could perhaps use her “Shutdown” ability to deactivate certain electronic components (like the lock), she would just need some way of cutting around the mechanical lock or through the case with surgical precision. To be honest, I cannot remember, but has Iona ever seen Diego morph his body into different weapons, blades, etc.? If so, he could provide the “tools” by forming his hands into things like a razor, scalpel, file, etc.

The veteran soldier feels only a slight sense of ease. After the cycle is placed back on firm ground, he extends the kickstand and dismounts. The pistol is slightly warm in his hand from all the bullets he fired. He makes sure the safety is “on” before placing it back in his coat pocket. Nodding at Kreppler, he acknowledges him with a simple “Sergeant”.

After listening to Iona speak, he chimes in, “What about The Dark Ascendant? I suppose he could easily find his way back to base, if he’s still alive. But should we try to wait for him?"

Number one on John’s list of recommendations to Ascendant Chen is the absolute necessity of better communications. The gritty soldier was highly concerned about the lack of it prior to the mission. Now…after the chaos of this recent mission…he would be appalled if they undertook another project without it.

John looks around at the inside of the building. “I’m not sure if we should remain here too long. Once traffic clears, this area will be swarming not only with Stronghold, but any police assets they can muster.

Duncan, John, and Iona

Iona, a bullet ridden and bloody mess of a woman, sets down with her companions and approaches the gruff looking German. He straightens up at the arrival of the android, mercenary and botanist wearing Stronghold body armor.

While John and Iona greet the Sergeant Duncan rushes for the cup of scolding hot coffee. It is like drinking molten lava. His taste buns are burned to the point he can't taste the coffee. His throat is on fire, and his eyes water from the pain of the experience. Yet he powers through it all, his voice strained from the damage he inflicted upon his throat.

Sergeant Kreppler initially stares at Iona, seeming to wrestle with the idea that she didn't need medical attention. Eventually though, he balls a fist and glares at the impertinent botanist. In German he spoke to Iona, as she was the authority figure here.

"Do you need him healthy?"

... then speaking aloud he went on to address some of the comments and concerns that had been voiced by Joh and Iona. Now speaking in an accented English.

"No time to look for the Ascendant. Too risky anyway. There is a medkit and tools in the back. I have a signal jammer. It is only good for five minutes."

Diego

With all the chaos Diego and his compatriots have wrought it is not difficult for Diego to find a shadow to slink into. Whether he is noticed, or if cameras picked up his movements ... he cannot say. But no one stops him. Dispursing into a menacing black cloud he floats off into the night, melding with the darkness.

Without standing in the open and confronting his enemy in the streets or skies, Diego is able to move without restriction. However, Iona was moving fast, last he saw her. Too fast for him to possibly catch up with. Unless she stopped and waited for him along the route back to the base. As he travels Diego gets to see the mess that the trio created in their wake.
OOC wrote:I need to know if the trio are going to wait in place, look for Diego, or head back to the base. Diego is traveling slower and would normally reach the base after the others.

If you aren't intending to join up with Diego, we will cut to Diego arriving at the HQ rather than recount is trip. Which won't be eventful other than the carnage he witnesses.
Supernaturalist wrote:I’ll assume that I’ll need to make a Technology roll at some point to deal with the case.
That is one option. You could also use force of some kind to open it.

Iona already assessed the locking mechanism, so I will give you this: This won't release a lock that is already ... locked. It will, in contrast, prevent you from inputting things electronically.

As a reminder there is a code input, a biometric scanner, and a mechanical lock component. Using Shutdown would prevent you from being able to input a code or using the scanner. Shutdown would turn these off. Not unlock the lock.
