In the cover of the alley, just in case anyone does see him prep the car to blow, he shifts into the appearance of a midwestern pure blooded American in a red flannel shirt, jeans, and a scruffy beard. Staying low and out of sight, Diego readies for the signal that Peter and Iona are moving. Given that they would likely need to travel through buildings if no car could could be procured, Diego made sure the delay was long enough. In his previous line of work he had seen rudimentary explosives. Light it at the right time and it would allow something else to get through. All he needed now was the signal. In the distance, he heard loud noises, which caused some dismay. Iona wasn't the most tactically sound robot and Peter was brilliant at engineering, but in combat he needed some refinement. Part of Diego regretted leaving them alone, again.

Once lit, Diego plotted out his next moves. Before it blows, sneak away into the shadows again and wait for the eyes to all be on the explosion. Hopefully, it will give him enough time to get out through the shadows undetected.

Whats happening? Did you manage to get into a car or get some other route plotted through the the buildings?, inquires Diego over the link.
Short of someone telling him whats going on, Diego is in hiding waiting for the signal Iona and Peter are moving to start the "fuse".

Iona pushes through the pain, eeks out ergs of energy from draining systems. Pushes damaged and broken parts past their limits. She trudged on, moving faster than anyone should have a right to in her condition, trusting in her allies and their plan. Peter leads the way, running full out. But they aren't fast enough

Behind them a well coordinated squad of elite soldiers augmented by technology that shouldn't exist advances on them at inhuman speeds. Overhead they are monitored and harassed by soulles drones. When Peter reaches the end of one building and prepares to cross the street to the cover of the next, the Stronghold APC comes wheeling right out in front of him. Heavy machinegun brought to bear.

Caught between the infantry force and the armored personnel carrier, there is a hellstorm of gunfire, a world of pain, and everything goes black for Iona and Peter.

From Diego's perspective, sheltered in the comforting shadows of a dark alley, it sounds like a warzone outside. An instant later, all at once, there is an unsettling silence. Fog rolls in. Cold, chilling fog. It swallows him up. Then, from behind him, he hears a warbling voice that he has only heard once before: Zachary Chen's voice. The Ascendant who had manifested incredible, mind boggling, physics defying speed after his Ascension.

"The Praetor would like to have a word with you."

Turning to face the source of the sound Diego sees the fog part. Out of it a blurry, black, vibrating fist fills his vision. Then darkness.

Diego and Peter wake up in a brightly lit solid white room with no apparent exit or source for the light that strains their eyes. It just is. In the room with them, contrasting with the bright white decor, is the black and bleak hooded figure of Praetor Null. Their emotionless Venetian Volto mask's black lips seeming to curve into the upside down crescent of a frown. But that isn't so. The mask never changes. It is just a mask. Right?

They ask you to explain the situation you found yourselves in. Then express their disappointment in Peter's blatant displays of power. Both are chastised for their inability to keep Iona from doing likewise. Diego is rebuked for his continued pattern of separating from his teammates and leaving them without the benefit of his more disciplined guidance. Null's demeanor remains eerie, alien, and distant. Even when they reprimand the two Ascendants, it is never heated or emotional.

Sunday 22th, Marsh 2019 - Recovery

After the debriefing ends the torture begins. It goes on and on until Diego and Peter loose all sense of time and thought beyond horrors inflicted on them. The Praetor isn't there for all of it and you never leave that painfully bright white room for the duration. Eventually you wake up in your respective quarters at your new headquarters. Mentally and physically aching in the wake of Null expressing their displeasure. When you go gather yourselves enough to take account of your situation you find that a week has passed since the events at St. Luke hospital and you are informed that Ascendant Chen is in the command room.

The passage of time for Iona is as peaceful as the void. She remains unconscious, and mentally inactive, for the majority of the week that passes by in the waking world. She wakes a couple times to the sight of Dr. Sokolov working over her, as though in surgery. Except he is framed by mechanical arms assisting in his repairs of her damages components. When she fully regains consciousness Iona finds herself in the bland, sterile, and undecorated personal space that Dr. Sokolov allowed her to maintain within his facility. She is clothed in a form fitting white body suite laying on a hard blocky rectangle in place of a bed. The room is dark and silent. Iona is alone.

Data rolls over her vision, feeding her a systems report that shows she is operating within normal parameters.
OOC wrote:One week has passed. All conditions for all characters will have been recovered from. Everyone who does not have a HP is reset to 1 HP.

Peter and Diego have a "Trauma Trigger", a one shot Complication they may choose to invoke at any point to gain 1 HP. It needs to relate to the trauma of being tortured by Null and it must hinder your character in a meaningful way. Mark this down somewhere so that you do not forget and I know it has not been used.

You have lost all of the medical equipment that you brought to Wichita for the heart operation. As your HQ is now lacking in equipment, all actions involving that Feature will take a -2 penalty until you are able to acquire replacements.

You have failed to acquire the heart for Dutch. Null has removed you from the task of assassinating Anastasia, and set you back to recruiting new forces for the coming liberation of Hadron City.

There are a couple springboard scenes that I set up for you: Iona potentially seeking out Dr. Sokolov and Diego or Peter speaking with Zachary. However, do not feel that these are required. Whether you want speak with them or gather together and move onto something else either is alright.

When Diego didn't hear back from Peter, figured it out. "Get ready" didn't mean it in the sense Diego was accustomed. In this case, they must have ran from any vehicle and not through the buildings. Diego feared the worst as he readied the distraction to give the others a hole to escape out of the perimeter. As Diego readied to go check on the others, he knew the worst had happened when Chens voice came through.

In the room, Diego felt an eerie sense one would imagine being in limbo felt like. Praetors Null presence verified something had went horribly wrong and from experience Diego knew what would happen next. All he could do was explain it as plain and militarily as he could.

Unflinching, as he had done in so man debriefs, he recounted the sequence of events. His voice was without passion and words were tailor chosen to be just the facts. It was not his place now to offer up any assessments or recommendations. "In an effort to procure transport to Singapore, we enlisted the aid of a smuggler known as Dutch. He agreed to smuggle us in a cargo plane if we procured him a person named Jacob's heart. The initial plan was simple enough. I would go in and knock Jacob out when he went in for his scan. To avoid suspicion, Peter would assist with the security cameras as I went. Once out, we would take Jacob to a motel room where Iona would remove the mans heart using medical equipment from the base infirmary.", begin Diego. He wasn't sure if Praetor Null knew of this plan or not, but it was part of what was planned.

"Upon arrival at the hospital in a van and city exit furnished by Dutch, we found it encircled by a police perimeter with Stronghold, the national guard, police, and the CDC. Cell phone pinging indicated Jacob was still inside. Entry with Peter in bandages to hide his appearance and Iona who I suspect has never been out of Hadron City over the surface was thought unwise. So, we went in through the sewers into the basement level with Peter tunneling into the morgue. We found what was happening. People were turning into monstrous creatures and using human skin as wall decorations when they weren't eating people. We dispatched the creatures in the morgue with Iona nearly stopping mid battle to examine one of the fallen creatures before being jolted from her course of action by Peter due to me being a little ahead scouting.", continued Diego making sure to note Ionas issues in battle and efforts taken to keep her in line.

Pausing, Diego composed the next bits in his head as if writing a report verbally. "After blocking the entry hole, we pressed ahead to the electrical control room in the basement so Iona could power the cameras to search for Jacob. Scouting the first floor revealed the room we needed to access to scan the security footage was guarded by possibly multiple guards. In addition, more creatures lurked in the basement. Time was of the essence, so the three of us proceeded to the first floor together where Iona would power the whole floor to enable Peter to do a quick scan.", added Diego setting the scene.

"Going up the stairs, we triggered a trap and ran into some guards no doubt watching for any creatures coming up from the basement. They were convinced we had survived in the basement, but still demanded we go back down. That was when a mercenary under the employ of Sokolov
on a separate mission took the guards out from the shadows. We proceeded together after Iona confirmed the woman's allegiance running into two more cops which also were convinced we were civilians. They insisted we go to the medical checks and the mercenary dispatched most while I dispatched one of the cops under the guise of being one of those creatures. A further confrontation with the guards in the security room was avoided when Sokolovs mercenary found who she was looking and we convinced the twenty plus rabble we were civilians. At the same time, Iona and Peter convinced one of the guards to take them to where the civilians were being kept safe."
, said Diego finishing the good parts so far.

"After talking with Renly, the person Sokolovs mercenary was looking, Sokolovs mercenary brought Renly along due to the man being needed for the other mission. The civilians were stored in a freezer for safety. I was inclined to eliminate all of the people and take Jacob only, but Iona felt they should be spared. So, I convinced them we had a way out. Jacob was chosen and Iona brought along an old man in a wheel chair to soothe some of the grumbling. With everything arranged, Renly, the mercenary, Jacob, the old man, and the three of us reentered the basement through a hole Peter made in the floor while everyone else was distracted.", continued Diego composing the next part during another pause.

"Unlike our earlier visit, the basement was empty as we went. The creatures had found the hole peter blocked off and dug through it apparently. I am unaware of what happen to them. Traversing the sewers proved difficult with the burden of the old man and Jacob with a broken leg, but it was working until we arrived at a large puss sack like object. Sokolovs mercenary shot it causing acid of some sort to start filling the sewers which Peter temporarily stopped by creating an object that mimicked tunnel collapsing debris. The time for the ruse was up, so I was going to kill the old man before Iona interceded and suggested we let him live leaving him in the sewers. The mercenary settled it by shooting the old man. Renly was already suspicious and quickly ran for the ladder to the surface between the national guard perimeter and the police outer perimeter."

Diego gave it all a chance to soak in before getting to the part where it all went haywire. "Sokolovs mercenary took off in pursuit of Renly while Iona, peter, and I took a now unconscious Jacob up the ladder and to the surface. With one of our gifts not being strength, Iona fashioned a harness out of a metal trash bin which took time and drew the attention of three cops on patrol. By that time, the ground behind us was being eaten away by the acid that had broken through Peters barrier. I thought it unwise to allow us to be escorted to a CDC tent because if Jacob woke up we would be exposed in addition to Peter and Ionas composition. So, I tried to reason with the cops to let us leave to no avail before I dispatched them in a manner similar to the creatures spike attack. With guards dispatched, we made a run for the perimeter."

"We nearly made it to an alley we could duck into closer to the perimeter when Iona carrying Jacob headed down an alley towards the national guard perimeter. As more cops converged, I instructed Peter to get Iona and get into a vehicle while I distracted the cops. I can only report what I heard after I left to cause the distraction. It sounded like Stronghold heavy equipment and soldiers had arrived and overwhelmed the two before they could effect an escape into a building or a vehicle. For my part, my diversion worked in keeping most of the cops looking for a fake creature. I was poised to set off an explosion to hopefully make a gap in the police perimeter when we were all summoned here.", finished Diego.

After Praetor Null corrected, as Diego thought of it after previous sessions, Peter and him Diego did not say a word in his defense. Privately, his view of Iona shifted from asset to burden if he was supposed to keep her in line. In addition, the two were combatants now in his mind. They should have been able to execute a general command. None of this he conveyed to Praetor Null. Instead, he suffered like too many times before.

Sunday 22th, Marsh 2019 - Recovery

Diego didn't leave his dark 10x10 room and tried to block out the noise. He wanted to stay alone in his pain, but duty called. A week had passed at the base and Chen was waiting no doubt with some more news and punishments.

Sunday 22th, Marsh 2019 - Recovery

The eyes of the young cyborg adjust to the near total darkness of the room. She had regained consciousness a couple of times over the past week, but she did not reflect on the mission during those brief moments, her mind was too focused on Dr. Sokolov and his effort to repair her.

When she finally regains full consciousness, she lies perfectly still for a while. So much has happened. Did we fail the mission? I can only remember the last frantic and painful moments of flight and then…nothing. Dr. Sokolov will want a report no doubt.

After spending half-an-hour alone with her thoughts, she decides to move. Sitting up in the barren room, Iona looks down, first at her arms and fingers, then her legs and feet. Scrutinizing herself for damage of any kind, she is amazed at how “normal” she feels given the punishment she received in Wichita.

She hops down from the table to test her legs. Walking about the room, her mind continues to race. Did Peter and Diego make it out alive? How did I get back to Dr. Sokolov? Will he be angry with me?

Finally, curiosity overtakes her. She lifts her eyes to search the room for a security-camera or speaker. “Master?”, she utters in her soft voice, yet loud enough to be heard by anyone in the room. “Are you there?
OOC: If there is no answer, she will proceed out of the room and try to locate Dr. Sokolov. She’ll start with the main lab.

Diego was in no mood to go back to solid form. He just endured a long stretch where he had to maintain a solid and akward form. Back in the base, he felt more secure in reverting to this native form. It didn't mean he just floated around. He tried to keep to the shadows as not to be too eery. Peter was likely still recovering, so Diego decided to see what Chen had to say before moving to the other matter of the green house manager. Neither likely had good news. He still had to handle it though. With Iona no where in sight and Peter recovering he couldn't pawn this task off on either of them as much as he would like.

Sticking closer to the walls so others didn't walk through him, Diego made his way to the command room and without opening the door went through a crack between the door and wall to enter the room. He saw no need to turn back to physical form, so spoke in his monotone emotionless voice that helped hide the raging trauma still brewing in his mind. "What is the purpose of your visit?", inquired Diego as casually as one would ask 'Whats up?'. His tone betrayed no offense or territory claiming since he wasn't offended or felt any particular affinity to the base. It was another burned of the role he was being cast.

The command room was mostly empty. In a far corner of the room two analysts worked pinning data to an upright map. Towards the center stood the blurry black figure of the fastest man alive. Only he wasn't a man any more and whether he was alive or not was a subject for debate. Zachary was a blurry black vibrating humanoid shape. As they did with Diego, people were avoiding him when they could do so without causing offense. When Diego entered, Chen was looking over the substandard communications equipment in the room. Zachary doesn't turn to face Diego right away, but rather paused a moment before doing so. As he speaks the voices that comes forth has a vibrating warble to it.

"Praetor Null has asked me to keep an eye on your coterie. I will be checking in on you now and again. With your consent I would also like to assign one of my agents to work out of your base."

Diego could read between the lines. Zarchary was stationing someone at the base to watch him, Peter, and Iona when the speedster was not present himself. He was also being polite by asking. If Null had ordered him to a task, he was justified in taking any measure he needed to in order to carry it out. Diego could fight it if he wanted to, but it wouldn't be pretty. While Diego considered this, Chen continued to speak in that warbling voice of his.

"The Praetor has also given consideration to your concerns voiced regarding Dr. Sokolov's representative, Iona. They agree that the android's inexperience has proved a detriment to your group. As such, measures will be taken to correct this since Dr. Sokolov has failed to do so ... and the Praetor wishes you to take them. You are to train the android, bringing them up to operational competence."

Iona
After her period of self analysis and introspection Iona looks up to the ceiling where she sees a small reflective dome set into the center of the ceiling. She knows this to be an audio-video surveillance device. Dr. Sokolov did nothing to hide knowledge of the surveillance from her. After she speaks at the fixture she hears the calm confidence of doctor's voice emanate from it.

"Come to room twenty-four Iona."

Room twenty-four. Iona didn't spend much time there in the past, but she knew it to be reserved as containment and holding for test subjects. Usually people who were by no means volunteering to take part in Dr. Sokolov's experiments.

Assuming Iona does as instructed, she finds the door to the room initially locked. There is no actually resistance to her entry though, as she can hear the door unlocking as she reached for the handle. Inside the room there the walls are lines with reinforced security doors. Twelve in all. Each bearing a number, one through twelve.

In the center of the room there are two stretchers and a tray with a thin white cloth over it. Gagged and strapped to one stretcher is a man, perhaps in his late forties. On the other stretcher is a teenage girl. Also restrained and gagged. The man is struggling. The girl's eyes water with tears as she sobs into her gag.

Dr. Sokolov stands to the side of them, staring into the distance while his hand move through the air and his fingers look to play at unseen cords, as though playing an instrument that is not there.

Iona enters the room and then pauses for a moment, unnerved at first by what she sees.

Doctor?...”, she says softly, “…you…summoned me?

Standing behind Dr. Sokolov, she looks to the faces of the two “patients”. Peering over the Good Doctor’s shoulder, she tries to ascertain precisely what he is doing.

Have I….interrupted something important, Doctor? I can return if you are busy.” The reality is that Iona knows some kind of experimentation is in process. Though she’s suspected this side of Dr. Sokolov’s personality, she has tried to avoid thinking about it. She has certainly tried to avoid encountering it. But now it seems unavoidable.

Perhaps I should leave and return when you are not so busy.

The first shoe fell, they were to be watched now almost as if on probation. It was easier than Diego was expecting. The nature of their mess up could not be understated in ruining any chance of hiding the fact there was new super powered individuals about. Diego considered them lucky to get off with probation and oversight to a degree. While not happy about it, all things considered it was surprisingly soft. What came next is what Diego didn't like, but Praetor Null was his master so their commands had to be followed. Ionas was now his to train and take responsibility. So far, she had proved resistant to operating as required in the war they found themselves to beat back the pillagers. That was going to have to change.

"As Praetor Null commands, I obey. Any measures you deem suitable to satisfy his commands in your duty to monitor us shall meet no resistance from me. Our base is primitive, but it shall grow. Any room you request is yours or your agents. Iona has its own section it likes to guard fiercely out of paranoia. It does not seem to trust we shall not eliminate it even though we are under orders to cooperate with it.", remarks Diego.

Adding the next bit with the same monotone, passionless voice Diego none the less was not happy about it. "I will also see to any training and measures of control to ensure it does not step out of line and compromise the mission again. While I was recuperating, was there any word on the creatures that escaped the hospital? They had an intelligence about them and the incident on the surface would have been a good distraction for them to escape further,", inquires Diego. He knew of other super science that had leaked into the world, maybe another group was spreading a pathogen again.

Iona
When Iona moves to walk past Dr. Sokolov and maneuver behind him one of his hands moves into her path, stopping her. It lingers there, halting her progress, until she gets the message 'don't stand behind me'. When she settles into a stationary stance Dr. Sokolov's hand moves away and resumed it's strange gesturing through the air.

"Do not worry over them."

... he states, as though reassuring Iona, or to alleviate her of some burden that she was carrying. He remains silent after that, for a few minutes. Watching, Iona can't see any tangible effect taking place on the two people in front of them. Then Dr. Sokolov speaks up again, though he does no cease whatever it is he is doing.

"Give me your assessment of your last operation. There is no need to recount the entirety of your adventure. I have read Ascendant Gonzalez's report and reviewed your audio-visual logs. What I want to know is where you believe you succeeded, how you feel you failed, and what you learned."

Diego
There is a slow slow of acknowledgement from Zachary as Diego voices his ascent to the Praetor's will, and the speedster's role as an instrument of that will.

"Hopefully I will not have to intervene in your operations."

There is a brief moment of silence from Zachary after Diego makes his request for information regarding the aberrations he had encountered at St. Luke, as though he were taking a moment of introspection before speaking.

"In the past week the pathogen has spread to thirteen states and there are reports of outbreaks in other countries. Approximately ninety percent of the infected die. The remaining ten mutate into some variation of the creatures you described in your report. There have also been other developments. You should take a look at this footage."

Diego doesn't know when it happened, but Zachary was holding a USB drive in his left hand and was offering it up to Diego. He didn't even notice the other Ascendant move to retrieve the USB drive, and had no idea where it came from. Zachary was just suddenly in a more position holding an object that might as well have manifested out of thin air.

Iona takes her eyes off the two persons on the laboratory beds, and looks into the face of Dr. Sokolov. Her aquamarine eyes convey a sense of melancholy, and after a sigh she proceeds to recount the mission.

As we approached the hospital to acquire Jacob, our initial plan had to be abandoned due to the quarantine and police presence. National guard troops were also present as well. We debated the best method for entering the building, and I suggested that we enter from below, through the sewers and into the sub-level of the hospital. The Ascendant Peter used his powers to create a passage for us.
As we entered, we were immediately attacked by a group of creatures. I’m sure that Ascendant Diego mentioned them in his report. I managed to take a few organic samples of their remains after terminating some of them. They were in my hoodie pockets, Master. Did you manage to retrieve them?

From our initial encounter, we managed to gain access to the main floor. Though the deceptions of Ascendant Diego, we tricked the police and guards into accepting us as mere hospital clients. This was done with the aid of the agent Carman Black, whom you had dispatched on another mission. Though I was to have a disagreement with her later, she proved to be a ruthless asset. To be fair, she did hasten our mission by eliminating some troublesome guards.

Peter and myself were then taken to a holding area where I managed to identify our target. With Diego posing as a policeman, we managed to coax Jacob to leave the holding area under the ruse that we were evacuating the building. By agreeing to take another patient, whom Jacob was concerned about, we managed to assuage his concerns and lure him from the hospital. So far things seem to be going smoothly as we entered the tunnel and exited into the sewers. I felt at this point that we were almost clear.

Then we encountered some large pustule-like organism up ahead in the sewers. While we were discussing how to deal with the impasse to our progress, Agent Black fired a round into the creature. This created a torrent of corrosive fluid which began to dissolve the sewer. We then escaped to the surface through the powers of Ascendant Peter, but before we could, Agent Black had also executed the patient who we had brought in addition to Jacob. This caused Jacob to become frantic and attempt to flee, but Diego knocked him unconscious. He would remain so for the duration of the mission. One of the biggest problems we now faced was that no one member of our group was strong enough to carry Jacob. This would prove to be a huge problem.

From the surface, we had to devise some way to transport him without tying up all three of us to carry him. I found a metal trash can in an alley which I magnetically crushed and wrapped around his torso as a makeshift breastplate – if you will. I could now use it to levitate him around. At this point, things still seemed manageable. But two things would start to unravel our mission. First, it seems that the police down the street heard my crushing of the trashcan and came to investigate. And second, the corroded sewers beneath us precipitated an expanding collapse of the street we were standing on. This meant we had to move quickly and that we could not enter the sewers from the nearby area.

In our initial encounter with the police, Ascendant Diego managed to kill the first group, but that only brought more. We attempted to flee across the street and into a new alley, but I outpaced both Ascendants. They then turned to face the police, while I tried to get Jacob to the van. I ended up in a parking lot, where I got my bearings and planned to proceed to the van, but even more police came. They were walking towards my hidden position, when I attempted to distract them into the alley from whence I came. Some were distracted, but two others came to my position. I killed both of those officers. Peter killed the officers near him and came to my position. That is when Stronghold attacked. I’m not sure where Ascendant Diego was at that point. He may have been fighting others as well. I recall Peter asking me to follow him, and I did. As we fled, I came under intense fire from Stronghold Drones. I still managed to transport Jacob with me, but it was a struggle as my systems became damaged. Then everything went black.

It all unraveled very quickly and when we were so close to the end. How on earth did we get out? Are Ascendants Diego and Peter ok?

As for what I learned and where we failed. Well, I believe we failed when we had to leave the sewers. There is no way of knowing that puncturing the pustule would cause a torrent of acid, but that was a great turning point. Being forced back onto the surface was catastrophic in hindsight. We probably should have entered a building and then used Peter’s ability to tunnel in order to move without observation. Also, I found it quite inconvenient that none of our men could muster the strength to carry Jacob. They are Ascendants after all. It meant that I had to use my powers for a task that should be doable for most humans. In the future we will need to have serviceable “muscle” to take with us. And as for Agent Black. I know that she is your servant, but she is impulsive and too callous in my opinion. Her trigger-happy nature served us well initially, but caused us a great inconvenience in the tunnels. As for myself, I should have found a way to be more discreet in my use of powers to create a metal harness for Jacob. Perhaps we could have entered a building, where I could have done it more quietly. I had no idea that the police were that close at the time. Hindsight is 20/20. Once the police came, that was really the end. We could not let them simply subdue us, so we were forced to resist. Resisting meant Stronghold would soon come. In hindsight, being detected at that point doomed our mission.
"

The young cyborg pauses for a moment. She looks at the floor like a child who feels shame. “I am sorry, Master. I did not mean to disappoint you. Perhaps I am not cut out for missions like the one we just undertook. Maybe I serve best when researching and giving care in the infirmary. If you want me to keep trying, I shall. Just tell me what you want me to do."

In a previous life, Diego might have worried about the other countries or cities. All of those people at risk and the world suffering. Now, Diego could not care less. Stronghold and world governments being on call served as a useful diversion of forces from Hadron City when the battle to reclaim the city kicked off. For spreading out from the city, there was going to be issues. The advantages had to be exploited while they still could though.

Diego shifted into liquid form, one much more comfortable than a solid body yet less so than his native cloud, and accepted the drive going over to one of the computer terminals Peter had installed. As he went to plug it in for playback, Diego followed up on the question of infections. "Is Hadron City having any cases or exposure? Fighting Stronghold is one thing, but a virus that creates creatures is another. A viral enemy will infinitely complicate operations in the city.", remarks Diego before the playback begins.

Iona
While Dr. Sokolov faced Iona, his eyes remained unseen, obscured by the reflective lenses of his horn rimmed glasses. His fingers played through he air as he listened to her, and then later when he responded to Iona's recounting of events.

"Agent Black is professional and decisive. You could learn from her example. Do not place the failure of your mission on someone else."

Poking a finger at the air he then draws it over to level with one of Iona's eyes. As he does so Iona sees the sewer again. She sees Agent Black aiming her rifle at the pustule. Carman shoots the biological mass and erupts in acid. Then the memory-image freezes. Iona hears Dr. Sokolov's voice, but she still sees the sewer, all movement frozen now.

"Do you think a sniper trained in stealth and threat elimination is proficient in dealing with a biological obstacle? Of course not. You, Iona, were the only one present with the knowledge who could have. You should have stepped forward. You cannot rely on the Ascendants to know what to do, or wait for them to tell you what to you."

Iona is on the streets of Wichita now. She sees Diego throw spikes at the police coming to investigate the sound caused by her work with the trash can and Jacob in the alley. Then she sees herself crushing an officer with a car. Next she see her self electrocuting another. Finally, the act of lifting a car in the air and placing it in the path of the oncoming APC is relieved. All the while Dr. Sokolov's voice can be heard addressing her.

"Did the four of you even think to bring mundane means of defending yourselves? Do not rely on your extraordinary abilities. Doing so turns your advantage into a crutch, as you employ them at every opportunity, even when there are better alternatives.[/b]"

"You took measures to avoid killing this elderly man when he became an obstacle to your objectives. He was clearly in poor health, was a burden, and you actively prolonged this burden to your group thus hindering your ability to achieve your mission."

The cyborg's vision flashes back to her last kill. The officer she electrocuted. The encounter plays again in full. She can hear the screams of the officer's death cry.

"Again you hesitate to kill. It is easier when someone points a weapon at you, yet I see your lack of conviction."

At this point Iona returns to the present. She is back in the containment room with Dr. Sokolov and the two restrained captives. As she adjusts the doctor goes on.

"Today I am going to teach you a lesson that I should have much earlier. I hoped you would learn it on your own."

Turning to face the other two people in the room, he gestures first to the man, then the teenage girl.

"This is Duncan Wheat. The young woman is his daughter. I have told him that if he tells you the name of his daughter she will be killed. You will hurt him until he tells you her name. Then you will kill her."

At that last statement, which was made with no effort to conceal Iona's objective from her prospective victims, Dr. Sokolov reached out the the tray stationed next to the stretchers and removes the cloth. Arrayed on it are a number of instruments: A drill hand cranked drill, hammer, pliers, a bone saw ... things you might expect to see in a primitive and improvised torture kit.

"You will use these to do so."
OOC wrote:We are not going to play out the torture and murder in detail. The broad strokes are fine. Whether Iona does as Dr. Sokolov instructs, and the emotional impact of performing the act has, is what is important.

Diego
The computer is already on and active when Diego inserts the drive. There is video file on it, which Diego loads. As it starts you can see that the camera view is from the dashboard of a police patrol car. The area appears to be rural with unevenly cut grass and trees flanking a two story farm house. The car's windshield is cracked. There is blood on the hood of the car. Bodies of police officers are scattered over the lawn. Something is skinning one of them. The building doesn't look right. It is made of bone and skin. Instead of windows it has eyes. The building rises up ... on legs. One of it's massive feet comes down on the patrol car and it is at that point the video footage cuts out.

"If there have been, Stronghold is keeping it both quiet and contained."

... Zachary's warbling voice come from over Diego's left shoulder at the conclusion of the video footage.

Diego Gonzalez
HP: 1
CND: Haunted, but fine
Form: Mist
Trauma Trigger: 1

Of course Diego was concerned about the moving, living structures and creatures getting out. Security would be tightened everywhere they went now doubtless and Stronghold would have an excuse, if they even needed it, to tighten security. Diego had been around enough to know decisions rarely happened as a result of data. Usually, data was found to justify a decision. Once enough data was gathered, the decision would be executed by those in power. Stronghold could easily claim quarantine measures and enhanced check points all in the name of possible virus containment at a moments notice even if the true cause was to tramp down any attempts to restore Hadron City's former glory. How it effected the time table to forge alliances remained an open question. As far as Diego was concerned, their failure left them no leeway in terms of delays or deviations from their core mission. The quicker they solidified alliances the better.

Back in his more comfortable form now, Diego continued to try and fill in some gaps. "This is certainly troubling. Is there any additional movement restrictions in the city we need to take account of?", remarked and questioned Diego without any vocal fluctuations. To anyone listening, it would sound like a non electronic sounding single tone computer generated voice.

Adding another question in as well, Diego inquired more. "How wide spread is the exposure of the power revelation to the world? With my teams duty to recruit new alliances, if word has spread rapidly of the various powers we posses it could aid or hinder the groups we approach if they know Iona can do what she did to the police and Peter can conjure objects from thin air only to dissolve them again. That is not even mentioning if my efforts at concealing my own power use failed.", inquires Diego. He wasn't sure if he could get answers, but the more information he could gather now the less he would need to gather later.

Iona
HP: 1
Cnd: Normal
PP:0

Iona stares into Dr. Sokolov's face; and for the first time he sees her behold him with horror and revulsion. At first she is unable to speak. She stands in disbelief of what he is saying, but with every passing second it becomes obvious he means it.

"Master! I am truly sorry! Please forgive me!" She begs. "But do not make me do this! I am not Null or Diego. Please, no!"

She begins to slowly back away from him, her hands feeling the way between the two examination tables with their hapless victims. She backs all the way to the door itself.

"Ask of me something else! Some other form of penance than this!"

Diego
Zachary silently observes Diego, apparently anticipating and waiting for him to ask questions. When they come, the speedster anwsers them each in turn.

"No additional restrictions yet. Stronghold has diverted efforts away from reconstruction and towards the building of a wall around the city. They have also made an announcement that by the end of the month anyone entering or living within the city will be required to be implanted with a identity chip, linking the person to a database and allowing monitoring of their location and health status. It is something Imperator was on the verge of instituting before the war. Stronghold is taking advantage of the technology and infrastructure already in place."

"Iona's levitating a truck is on the news. Beyond that, it is likely Stronghold and the police have shared what they've learned from their experiences with government agencies and the military. Though nothing further has been talked about by the media."

Iona
When Iona balks at the command given to her, Dr. Sokolov's hands cease moving through the air. His attention focuses on her, and his expression hardened by a degree. The man's voice takes on a more stern tone as he responds to the woman's plea to avoid enacting such horrible deeds.

"If you feel remorse and regret for how you performed, then you will want to correct your behavior. I am giving you the opportunity to do so. Do not disappoint me again Iona."

With that last statement the doctor takes a menacing step towards her, as though to imply something unpleasant would occur if she continued to refuse to comply. Behind her there is a click from the door as it's locking mechanisms secure the barrier and bar retreat.
