[Forever Tree]Rustdeity OOC

Post by Hoid » Fri May 03, 2019 1:43 am

I’ve give this another whirl.

I’m looking for a single player. The game would be set in the Forever Tree. You’d play an Exotic (ie, unique) superhero with tremendous powers. You’d be PL15/300pp. You don’t have to play a Supermanalogue, though your character is clearly one of the most powerful Exotics in the multiverse.

Some notes:
,......,I’m only looking for a single player.
,......,We’re using Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition rules. Your character would, as noted above, be PL15/300pp. As an Exotic, you are something special and unique. You don’t fit into any neat category.
,......,Your character must be either human or part human. No pure-blooded aliens. No robots. No cyborgs. Superscience Devices And Gadgets are fine though.
,......,No magic. Everything can and must be explainable by the wonky rubber band science of comic books.
,......,I’m flexible on parallel-Earth, save for Earth-D. (Earth-D is a parody of 90s comics and I’m not looking to run a game like that.) If you see something you like, propose an idea. Even a multiverse-wide campaign would be fine. Whatever catches your interest.
,......,The tone would be generally dark, but not 90s X-treeeeeeeme! or anything so farcical.

Anyhow, I eagerly await any responses, if any!

What exactly is the Forever Tree? I've never heard of it.

I was doing a little reading, the one that stood out to me was Earth-T, and a thought occured to me of playing an Avatar of Hope, combined with the power of an Inheritor, one powerful enough to cover the planet Earth, not the entirety of the Earth-T dimension. While you said you don't have to play a Supermanalogue, I do enjoy the Paragon archtype and the general level of optimism it brings to a setting.

However, I am a little curious about the setting itself as I couldn't find information regarding the mundane basics of Earth-T, is it similar to our own Earth? Are we free to 'port over ideas and/or concepts from a standard kitchen sink Superhero setting, barring exclusions you laid out above?

Specifically, if I am writing a background, am I free to assume that a) Avatars, Voids, Inheritors & Esper's function in a manner similar to your stock Freedom-verse setting? And finally, you obviously have a very in-depth and creative cosmology of the multiverse going on? What would the scope of the game be? A singular Earth, where we're dealing with mundane juggling of heroic & civilian identities, coupled with galactic shennanigans and universe shattering events?

Sorry for all my questions, I am certainly interested, but just curious about certain aspects and the scope of the game.

Some chunks of the setting of various realities have yet to be transferred over here, or even written down at all. The Forever Tree is, in essence, a never ending project: a point will never come in which I’ll say, “Ok, I’m satisfied.” There’s always room for expansion.

As to Earth-T, the very nature of native superhumanity has shaped society significantly. Ideals have genuine power behind them, as do features of the landscape (including manmade features). Avatars and Inheritors come around and pass away once the thing they represent is no longer viable. Communist supers, for instance, are found only in Asia, whereas before its collapse the Soviet Union was overflowing them.

Concepts have to have metaphysical ‘weight’ behind them to genuine power, but all superhumans are not equal—-some ideas and features generate a lot more power than others. What can serve as a power-source? Almost anything, so long as it has an impact on local, national or global culture. An individual truck, for instance, couldn’t empower anybody, but Ram as a company certainly could.

Because of this, propaganda and cultural jingoism is much more prevalent on Earth-T than it is elsewhere. People are a lot more outspoken. Unfortunately, this means negative, hateful ideas and locales that resonate with tyranny are glorified as much as positive, helpful ideas and landscapes or structures embodying humanity’s better nature.

As to scope, think big. But what does ‘big’ mean, exactly? Well, that’s up to you. ‘Big’ could mean saving the world from WWIII, preventing a coup d’etat in some major First World country, fending on alien invasion—-or it could mean crazy multiversal shenanigans and confronting evil cosmic forces.

Importing ideas: sure! Just remember, certain things simply do not fit the Forever Tree. Magic, for instance, is a big no-no, as is the genuine existence of deities. Just like in the real world, religion is based on faith—-not rock-solid evidence. Certain cosmological questions are just unanswerable, and will always remain that way.

That being said, I’m certainly open to player input!

Would there be space for 'small' stories as well? I love Superman, I really do, but at times, him talking a girl down from jumping off a ledge are as much in character and dramatic, as the next big fight with Darkseid, if you know what I mean? In essence, as much as I am ok with discovering more about the meta-physics or cosmic implications of the world, I still love the complications that come with maintaining one's humanity, and a circle of family & friends as supporting cast.

And do you expect us to be experienced at that level of power, or can we be Superman Year 1 type deal, where we're established on a local, perhaps, national level, but just finding our groove in the global arena as play begins?

Sorry for asking questions but my juices are flowing, lol!

Year 1 type of games are fine. You’d have all that power, but stories about learning to properly harness it CAN be fun.

Alright, did a quick draft before lunch;
Pinnacle [Forever Tree]

Power Level: 15; Power Points Spent: 300/300

STR: +15 (14/40), DEX: +1 (12), CON: +10 (14/30), INT: +1 (12), WIS: +3 (16), CHA: +6 (12/22)

Tough: +15, Fort: +13, Ref: +4, Will: +9

Skills: Bluff 4 (+10), Computers 4 (+5), Concentration 12 (+15), Diplomacy 9 (+15), Gather Information 4 (+10), Knowledge (civics) 4 (+5), Knowledge (current events) 4 (+5), Language 1 (+1), Medicine 2 (+5), Notice 2 (+5), Sense Motive 2 (+5)

Feats: Inspire 2 (+2), Leadership, Luck 4, Ultimate Effort (Will Check)

Powers:
Avatar of Hope (Variable 8) (acquire: all traits, limited to: Emotion, Psychic; Action 2 (free); Uncontrolled)
Incarnate of Humanity (Variable 8) (acquire: all traits, limited to: Strength, Endurance, Resilience; Action 2 (free); Uncontrolled)
Pinnacle of Heroism (Morph 4) (morph: single appearance - heroic identity, +20 Disguise, Feats: Inspire 2 (+2), Leadership)
Strength of Conviction (Container, Active 16) (Linked (Pinnacle of Heroism (Morph 4)))
. . Enhanced Charisma 10 (+10 CHA)
. . Enhanced Constitution 16 (+16 CON)
. . Enhanced Strength 26 (+26 STR)
. . Flight 5 ([0 active, 10/10 PP, 2/r], Speed: 250 mph, 2200 ft./rnd)
. . . . Super-Strength 5 (Alternate; [5 active, 10/10 PP, 2/r], +25 STR carry capacity, heavy load: 102.4 tons; +5 STR to some checks)
. . Immunity 10 (enviromental conditions (all), fatigue effects; Limited - Half Effect)
. . Impervious Toughness 10 (Limited (Physical Damage))
. . Protection 5 (+5 Toughness)

Attack Bonus: +5 (Ranged: +5, Melee: +5, Grapple: +20/+25)

Attacks: Unarmed Attack, +5 (DC 30)

Defense: +5 (Flat-footed: +3), Knockback: -12

Initiative: +1

Languages: American Sign Language, English

Totals: Abilities 20 + Skills 12 (48 ranks) + Feats 5 + Powers 231 + Combat 20 + Saves 12 + Drawbacks 0 = 300
My idea is that a young man from a troubled youth, who now lives with a loving, responsible foster-family, emerges when his sister's life is threatened in a mundane accident. He transforms, ie. Morph, into an actualized, heroic identity, and is able to save her, because it is the *right* thing to do, and in so doing saves multiple other bystanders. I can get into the background more, when I have time to sit down and flesh it out.

Mechanically, I built him as a fairly tough PL10 hero, but then added *TWO* 40 point Variables, one to represent his connection to the Hope & Inspiration allowing him to mimic any ability with the Emotion, Psychic or Hope descriptor. And secondly, since there is an Incarnate of Earth, Urth I believe he's named, I chose to be an Incarnate of Humanity. They more people who believe in him, the more powerful he becomes. That Variable is limited to Strength, Endurance & Resilience. However, I put the Uncontrolled flaw on each of them, so he's learning his powers, and you can tell me what happens, or *if* it even happens. If he's able to do something out of his Variable a couple times, I may lower the rank of the appropriate Variable and purchase the power so he will alwyas have access to it.

Thoughts? Concerns? At least mechanically, let me work on the History over the next day or two!

Ok. Something about your Saves seem off. Maybe my brain just isn’t working, but it appears to be much more than a mere 12pp.
It appears you spent much more than 5pp on feats.

More to come as the day goes by.

Ahhhhhh the wonders of Hero Lab formatting! My Fort is calculating with my Enhanced Ability (Constitution), so it appears inflated. And I purchased Leadership & Inspire 2 as part of Morph, so it's only available when he's in Pinnacle form. However they are duplicated under the Feat heading.

I can play with formatting tonight, I just was curious about your take on the Variable pools honestly.
