"It will be alright. What is your name? I will go with you to check on your dad, but I'm going to call emergency medical services first so they can meet us at your place." As she waits for the boy to answer Aranel patches a call through her comlink to EMS, hoping this boy's father being sick isn't connected to all the monster animals in the area. "Okay, they are on their way. Just lead the way to your place."

It had been a couple of months since the battles against the War Incanate and Lucienne in the Himalayas and much had changed, Kisai had moved on and Phoenix City was changing once again with the arrivals of the Lemurians and also not changing with Mayor Cooper somehow still clasping onto power.

And finally the Hall of Justice was to be handed over to the Champions, well they needed something after Michelle had flown their old headquarters into battle.

Imogen's face was impassive as she digested the information provided to her about the fresh batch of extremists now active in Phoenix City, all hints pointing to them being located in Kings Junction which happen to her old stomping grounds, it was time to hit the pavement so to speak.

"Who's dat" the gruff voice called out from behind the dingy bar, a shuffling sound and a stocky man poked his head and then slightly paled at the sight of Nightbird "I aren't telling you nothing" he said in a much louder voice "Ya can't do nunnit to me I am a legit businessman ya crazy bird."

"Are you done Steiny" Imogen asked much quieter

"Ya can't be too careful" Steiny replied his voice at the same level

"Good what do you know about an outfit maybe located in KJ, they make the Mayor look like a poster boy for inclusion and sensitivity."

"Wat? No idea I mean it"

"I don't have the time to waste palying games Steiny, just tell me what you know and I will move on or i could spend the night at the bar trying out your top shelf, I am sure your regulars won't mind at all."

Leaving Imogen made her way to her next contact slowly exploring leads.

"THERE YOU ARE!" booms the woman, startling passers-by. She stabs an accusing finger at your chest.

"Have you no care? Wandering around alone without protection? Need I remind you what happened the last time someone decided to go on a merry jaunt through this city?" (She is, insensitively, referring to the Armada's invasion.)

"I am Lady Marie MacKenzie, Grand Dame of the Order of Merlin. The Order's divinations have identified that you will be the subject of a major threat in the next one to three days. For your own safety, it is decreed that you are to be escorted immediately to the nearest chantry until such time as we can ascertain the nature of this threat. The Order looks after its own," she proudly declares.

You hear a terrible screech high above you and see something approaching rapidly on a contrail of fire. It seems that the major threat in question has just arrived. "Missile!" "Run! Take cover!" you hear people scream in the distance.

"It seems you have shown yourself none too soon," MacKenzie says. "Follow me. We shall walk the Wizard's Way to safety while we weather the storm and determine who is attacking you and why." The emphasis on the last word suggests that somehow, she personally blames you for this situation.
Technology, 8 ranks

From its trajectory and speed, you determine that the "missile" is not a missile at all but some kind of drop-pod. Products of super-science, such pods can be fired from missile tubes and are used to deploy minions and robotic drones behind enemy lines.
OOC

You can follow MacKenzie to safety (no check required).

Alternately, you can allow the pod to land and prepare to confront whatever comes out of it. If you do this, you gain a surprise round due to your preparations.

Alternately, you can attempt to shoot down the pod before it lands: make an attack check (at a -2 penalty due to your care in avoiding causing harm to civilians). If you miss, the the pod lands normally and you do not get a surprise round. If you hit, the pod is disabled and you make it crash harmlessly in the Santa Barbara river which flows through the city center.

"I'm David," the boy says, biting his lip in tense anticipation as you call emergency services with your earpiece.

As you hang up the boy motions frantically for you to follow through the dim, dingy streets. "Dad got the stomach flu last week and went to see a doctor," he explains. "Then, a few days ago, another man came by and said he was some kind of aid worker, with the United Nations or something, and gave Dad a different medicine that he said was better than the ones the doctors give. But Dad got worse after that, and now I'm afraid he'll die. Please don't let him die," he begs. Behind his glasses, his eyes are bright with tears.

You are led up a dilapidated apartment block. The smells of cooking, cigarette smoke and a whiff of marijuana mingle in the air. As you pass, curious faces peer out of windows and open doorways. Finally you reach the boy's home where a middle-aged woman with her hair in curls meets you. At first her expression is guarded and suspicious, but when she realizes who you are, it dissolves into relief.

"A hero! Oh, Jesus," she gasps. "Thank you so much for coming to help."

Lying on a couch is a man with short-cropped dark hair, covered with a blanket. "Dad," David says, rushing to his side. "Help is here."

But the man does not respond. He stares at the ceiling, murmuring feverishly. His skin has a sickly green tinge to it, and his eyes are clouded and unfocused. Behind you, through the open door, you see a small crowd gathering.

OOC

Make a DC 15 Treatment check to diagnose the man's illness. Your degrees of success determine how much you can do for him:

1 degree: Diagnose his illness and prevent symptoms from worsening.
2+ degrees: You cure the man's illness.

You can also ask David and his family questions, or interrogate the locals. You can also do whatever else you consider reasonable.

It doesn't take long for Marvin "Steiny" Stein the bartender to cave and tell you all about the conversation he heard between several excited patrons a few nights past. Oh, they had been careful to use veiled language, but anyone familiar with the subject matter could tell they were going on about their anti-alien agenda. They'd let slip a few times and dates and when one of the gang left his wallet behind there had been some interesting handwritten notes in it. But the juiciest tidbit is yet to come.
Investigation: result of 30

"The guy riling them up is some dude called Nightfire, or Knightfire, whatever. The way they talked about 'im, I don't think he's a person, like a flesh and blood human, you know?

"They said he's a spirit of vengeance sent by God to cleanse the impure... lotta phony religious claptrap like that. Sounded like some kinda weird cult.

"But they ain't counting on God to get rid of the aliens for them. They've got weapons stashed at one of the old steel factories down at the Junction. Sounded like one of the westside ones, so it's either Pierce & Co or US Steel. Lots of weapons. Bragged about being able to put holes in tanks with 'em."
"Now don't you go blabbin' about this to anyone else, you hear," he mumbles in a feeble impression of a stern voice that ends up sounding more pleading than anything, muttering something about a wife and kids to feed.

Visits to several other well-informed individuals in the area confirm your initial leads. The extremists are using an Pierce & Co. Steel Works in western King's Junction as a mustering point for their attack. It is a relatively small steel foundry that, like many others of its kind, shut down in the 1970's as U.S. manufacturing moved overseas. Today, its rusting carcass stands as a symbol of the threat that the outside world - and now the rest of the galaxy - poses to the American Way.

You set out immediately once you judge your evidence is solid and arrive shortly after 2200 hours. The factory is dimly lit by amber streelights, but there is evidence of recent activity - vehicle tracks in the sand before the gate, leaked engine oil in the parking lots, door handles a little cleaner and less dust-caked than they should be. Bright paint splashed over one of the moldy walls defiantly proclaims:

EARTH FOR HUMANITY - DEFEND YOUR BIRTHRIGHT!

Atop a corroded shipping container in the amber light of a street lamp are three young men sharing a smoke, trying to pose as loiterers but looking far too alert and on edge to do so.

The extremists are trying to be very careful. But it's also very hard to hide a large quantity of high-tech, military-grade firepower and the zealots needed to wield it.

OOC

You can take the 3 sentries by surprise and defeat them without combat with a DC 12 Initiative check (you cannot take 10 on Initiative checks).

A DC 15 Stealth check allows you to sneak past the sentries into the factory interior undetected.

Alternately, you can choose to search the exterior of the factory first for more clues; make an Investigate check to see what you find.

Maybe she intended to intimidate him, maybe she didn't realize what exactly she had said. But all the humor drained from Jason's face when she went THERE.

"I don't care if you are the Grand Poobah of Space. You clearly need to get some q-tips and clean the wax out of your ears. I left your worthless, cowardly order. You don't get to tell me what to do, and I am not going anywhere with you."

What Jason says next, his father had said many times. Jason was too young to really understand it until his Mom repeated the words on his father's deathbed.
Jason and his mom flanked Alexander on the bed. He was trembling and feverish. Mom's spells and herbs had given them nearly ten more years with him, but they could do no more. Jason, no longer a child, finally asks the question that has been plaguing him most of his life.

"Mom, why is Dad sick?"

"He's not really sick, my son. His mind is just worn out."

"I don't understand."

"When you go through the torments he did, face down the demons and hell dimensions, see things no mortal should see; it takes a toll on your mind."

"Did he know this could happen?"

His mom nods.

"Then why did he do it?"
"Maxwells don't run from danger! They run towards it because that's where the people in trouble are."

Already turned to face the drop-pod, he raises his arms up.

"FORZARE!"

Jason doesn't know who or what is inside of it so blasting it is out of the question, as is letting it crash.

"So Knightfire is back" was Imogen's first thought as she made her way towards the Pierce & Co Steel Foundry, it didn't seem that long ago since she had encountered the spirit of hate during the trials to enter Shambhala and she wasn't surprised given the current climate of fear and hatred being enabled and supported by certain parties in the cities leadership that Knightfire was still hanging about.

Now looking at the kids (did she just call them kids) on guard, Inogen decided to take some time to check out the rest of the grounds before she made her way inside.

More fireworks go off in the distance. "And now," the reporter continues, "a word from the embattled Mayor Cooper, who is vigorously fighting a motion of impeachment as well as charges of embezzlement, corruption, larceny, sexual harassment, intimidation, coercion, bribery, fraud, insider trading, money laundering, and parking in a disabled parking space."

The cameras swivel back to focus on the rotund form of Reginald Price Cooper, in a red-and-white pinstripe suit and blue tie, ascends the podium with an extremely sour look on his face. "Good morning... I mean afternoon... it is my foot, I mean my great pleasure, to be here... meritorious deeds, blah blah, heroic service, yadda yadda, bleep bleep..."

The reporters exchange awkward looks and the audience stirs. Many citizens have disapproving looks on their faces and are murmuring angrily. Others are looking at you, either expecting that you will do or say something or looking for guidance on how to react.

OOC

You can publicly call out Cooper on his half-hearted speech.

You can direct the audio crew on site to cut off Cooper's mic; they are staff of the non-profit Foundation and generally follow your orders.

You can also do anything else you consider reasonable.
Gelert gives a huff of annoyance.

The corgi was a being of near infinite patience with people, but Mayor Cooper had long ago exhausted even his supply of forgiveness and understanding. Gelert was just done with this doofus, and so was the crowd.

Gelert gestures with his head to audio crew to cut the sound, as he slowly approaches the podium.
He lets the idiot mayor keep talking with the microphone off for a moment, before forming a construct of a vaudeville stage hook and yanking the blathering idiot away from the podium.

Gelert floats up the mike, nods to the crew to turn the sound back on and says in the most dry and sarcastic tone he can manage. "Thank you, Mr.Cooper. Those certainly were words that you said. Watch your step on your way out... I mean off stage."

MacKenzie's face goes so sour that her veins might as well be filled with vinegar and not blood. She does, in fact, seem completely oblivious to exactly how much foot she has inserted into her mouth. You come to the blood-boiling conclusion that she seems to think your refusal to go with her is entirely youthful pique.

"Why you -- come back here!" she shouts. "This is not the time to utter such reckless comic-book catchphrases! ARE YOU LISTENING TO..."

You leave the Grand Dame and her impotent prattling behind, and face the incoming threat. The drop-pod comes to a shuddering stop in mid-air as your invisible power grabs hold of it. You see an insignia on the pod's outer shell. It looks like an "A" in a circle, stark black on gunmetal grey:

Image

A moment later, the pod's sensors, detecting that it is unable to land normally, fire the explosive bolts that release its outer casing. Inside is a robot the size of a small truck, with sharply angular armor plating, glowing red sensor clusters, and four legs that end in sharp, dagger-like spikes. The legs are folded together so that their tips meet at a single vertex, giving the robot the appearance of a very sharp, very angular and very dangerous top.

They shudder against the invisible force holding them together for an instant, as if trying to struggle free; then at the opposite end, a turret with a tracking sensor that looks like an evil red eye pops out and opens fire. Crackling red bolts of energy arc from it to the ground all about you, melting the asphalt at your feet, but you easily evade this clumsy attack. The air about you is now filled with vehicles honking and shouts of alarm as traffic grinds to a halt and civilians flee the area. The windows of surrounding skyscrapers are filled with faces pressed against the glass, gawking at the super-battle unfolding below.

OOC
You gain 1 HP for good roleplaying.

By the way, I just realized that I never replied to your question in OOC; sorry about that, and I will check it more regularly in future. The answer is that there is no penalty for using Move Object. Generally, it is only damage powers that get this kind of penalty, and these circumstances are not excessively common.

The man looks up at you feverishly. He is shaking and trembling uncontrollably with muscle spasms, and his eyes are blurry and unfocused. Outside, the crowd murmurs as they watch you work, wondering if this wonder doctor will be better than the last.
Treatment - 1 degree of success

You determine that the man has been dosed with a potent mutagen that causes dramatic and grotesque mutations - comparable in effect to the kind used by mad scientist Daniel on Liam. You have intervened at an early enough stage to prevent this civilian from suffering Liam's fate. With a powerful cocktail of phytochemicals, you trigger what scientists might call an immunostimulant effect and accelerate DNA repair and regeneration processes. You have not yet cured him, but you are able to stop the mutagen from taking full effect and allow the doctors to do the rest.
It takes a while, but within an hour the man's fever has began to subside and his feverish shaking and muttering eases. He is still sweating profusely and too weak to speak for long, but regains enough clarity to look at you with clear eyes and smile, fondle David's head and clasp his wife's hands, before falling into a deep sleep. He even manages to snore!

"It's working! He's getting better!" David cries. Outside, there's a round of exchanging looks between the locals, before one of them starts clapping, and soon the sound of applause fills the corridor as they cheer the medical miracle they have witnessed with their eyes.

With tears of relief in her eyes, David's mother explains what happened. It is essentially the same story David told you, but with one sinister detail added.

"The man who said he came from the United Nations, he and his staff gave free medicine to many people around here," she says in English. "He said they were antibiotics and painkillers, effective for many kinds of small illnesses. All my neighbors received some."

The applause is cut short by a loud crash from outside, followed by shouts of alarm and gunfire. The people gathered at the door stir, then quickly begin peeling away. You hear someone cry something in Spanish. Then, in English:

"Monster! Monster!"

A heavy footstep shakes the concrete floor of the apartment block, and bare lightbulbs sway dangerously from the ceiling. Out of the window, you see a creature burst out of a nearby flat:

Image

OOC

You can confront the creature directly by rolling initiative. If you do so, you receive a surprise round before combat commences properly.

You can attempt to lure the creature away from the apartment block with a Deception or Intimidate check (it is immune to Persuasion), or alternately a Power check of a suitable power, and a description of an appropriate distraction.

You can try to prevent the creature's advance with effects such as Create or to subdue it with Affliction. You can consider a power stunt, although spending HP at this point is not recommended, and it is better to suffer fatigue. You can also do whatever else you consider reasonable. Note that you are in a crowded apartment block: prolonged combat here and multiple uses of Damage effects will almost certainly result in massive damage to life and property.

Nightbird Investigation: 1d20+13 25
Investigate - 2 degrees of success

You avoid the sentries and scour the exterior of the factory as best as you can. In the orange light of sodium lamps you see the factory grounds are filled with tracks of heavy vehicles and power-armored bootprints. In a ditch you find the discarded casing from a defective railgun shell and some spent batteries that you recognize as energy weapon power supplies. A little more nosing around and you strike gold: in a secure crate covered by a tarp in a maintenance shed, you discover a crate of high-tech weapons including sonic cannons, turbolasers, multi-missile launchers, plasma guns and more.

You can arm yourself with the weapons if you choose. If you do so, you gain an Easily Removable Ranged Damage 10 effect. Further apply for free one of the following options:
  • Area (any shape you choose)
  • Secondary Effect
  • Improved Critical, Subtle, Insidious
  • Improved Critical, Indirect, Homing
  • Trigger
  • Alternate Resistance: Fort
And an appropriate technology descriptor of your choosing.
You already know that Knightfire is behind this new extremist group. But presumably evil spirits of hatred do not conjure up super-science weapons. This suggests that Knightfire has obtained some additional backer for his hate crusade, however there are no identifying markings on the weapons and you do not recognize them as belonging to any of the opponents you have faced before, including the Silver Banshees.

As you close the lid on the crate, vehicle engines growl in the distance. Three eighteen-wheeler trucks rumble down the road towards the steel factory. The front gate of the factory compound slowly grinds open to admit them, and the shutters of the main factory building rattle upwards. Bright white light pours out from within, and you hear the voices of many people.

The eighteen-wheelers pause in front of the gate, waiting for it to fully open so they can enter. The drivers make small talk with the sentries at the front. You cannot help but observe that the trucks are sitting ducks in this condition.

OOC

You can attack the trucks. If you do so, you gain a surprise round as you have remained undetected thus far and the enemies do not expect an attack. Roll initiative and make an attack check.

Alternately you can break into the main factory building through a window without being detected. The arrival of the vehicles distracts the guards, making the DC of the Sleight of Hand check to DC 18, which you pass by taking 10.

You can cut the power to the factory by using Birdy Rust to disintegrate the power relay (no check required), which you discovered as part of your investigate check above. This alerts the occupants but plunges the factory interior into darkness and prevents the shutters, gates etc. from being operated without some kind of external assistance, e.g. powered armor.

You can also do whatever else you consider reasonable.

A member of the audio crew gives you a thumbs-up and flips Cooper's mic to off. However, one of the blessings of being in love with the sound of one's own voice is immunity to details like this. Cooper continues blabbing at his (now-dead) mic. "Blah blah... meddling kids... Yak yak... would've gotten away with it..."

The crowd murmurs in amusement, then, as you hook Cooper off the stage, they start to applaud and cheer loudly. Cooper brightens, because of course they must be cheering for him. "Why, thank you, thank you," he says graciously as you hook him off stage. The audience quickly switches to booing him , but Cooper's perception is highly selective. "Just doing my public duty as a humble servant of the people, unlike those self-righteous, nosey-- YIKES!"

Suddenly, the sound of rocket engines fills the air. A dozen men in form-fitting jumpsuits and rocket packs descend simultaneously from the sky, landing at strategic points surrounding the plaza. They wield high-tech weapons which they point at the crowd, eliciting shouts of alarm. Two more land on either side of Mayor Cooper and point handheld devices at him. The devices emit beams of red light, and the Mayor comes to a shuddering stop in mid-air.
R.I.O.T. Squad uses Tractor Beam on Mayor Cooper
Bystanders are automatically hit
R.I.O.T. Squad Tractor Beam vs Create DC 20: 1D20+10 = [13]+10 = 23
Another man in a black and red bodysuit descends from the sky, equipped with a rocket pack and a high-tech shotgun, eyes hidden behind dark glasses. He looks a little like this:

Image
(But much more evil than Schwarzenegger or any of his characters.)

"This is Marshal Lawless to Pandemonium One," the ruggedly handsome man touches his earpiece and says. "Target is secured and ready for transport. Commence airlift."

"SAVE ME!" Cooper flails in your direction. "I'M TOO YOUNG AND VALUABLE TO SOCIETY TO DIE!"

Marshal Lawless levels his shotgun at the crowd below, looks at you, and very slightly shakes his head no. It seems he will open fire on civilians if you attempt to interfere with the kidnapping of the Mayor.

OOC

You can protect the crowd from any hostile fire by using Create to conjure a solid light construct. This lets Marshal Lawless escape with Cooper captive because you cannot use your array to hold on to Cooper simultaneously. If you do this you gain 1 HP for prioritizing the safety of civilians.

Alternately, you can distract Marshal Lawless and his troops with a successful Deception check. The Marshal's Deception score is 10, making the DC 20. If you succeed, you act freely for 1 round while the Marshal and his troops cannot react.

Alternately, you can decide to do nothing for now and see how the situation develops; no check required.

You can also do whatever you consider reasonable.

Jason presses his arms down sending the ship crashing into some empty roadway with the robot at the bottom.
I think that qualifies as DC29 TOU from rank 14 Move Object throw/press.

Seeing the creature before her, Aranel can't help but think the timing is too obvious. Another victim of these supposed government agents and their "medicine". She needs to get them out of here without endangering anyone else, hoping its bulk doesn't belay superhuman strength she attempts to restrain it with a bubble of water formed around it.

OOC: Attack check for Nature Mastery [water]: Attack roll: 1d20+12 30 Move Object rank 12 DC 22 Strength or Dodge to resist.
