The Foster's guests were surprisingly helpful for a group of teenagers. Russel wound up not only organizing Rodney's wardrobe, with Maryanne's help, he also wound up reorganizing the Foster's kitchen from the ground up. This kept him fairly busy, but Catherine gave concent for the operation. It kept him busy and out of trouble. She didn't seem overly attached to the resent standard any rate.

While Russel organized items, others worked around him to wash and dry dishes, or tended to tasks elsewhere. There weren't many, but the help was appreciated, with Benjamin and Catherine giving their thanks. Anika and Rodney were possibly the least helpful, though Rodney busied himself with making sure his guests had what they needed for the night, Anika simply socialized rather than look for something to do.

Eventually you all settle down for the night around midnight. Whether you actually go to sleep or not is another matter. No parental figure looms over you, or checks in on you, to make certain you are resting. You're simply told not to stay up too late by Rodney's mom before she disappears into the room she shares with her husband.

After kissing Jamie goodnight, Anika retires to the room she is sharing with Maryanne and Mel. While she socialized before bed, if either girl wanted to do so, she eventually went to sleep.

Rodney did some exercises before bend. Simple crunches and push ups. During this time he conversed, if anyone stayed up to talk to him while he performed his nightly routine, then afterwards the dark skinned youth retired for the night. He snored too.

In time, all was quiet, except for the inanimate. The occasional hum of the refrigerator. The ticking of a clock. Beyond the windows of living room and Rodney's bedroom there were the sounds of a sick and dying city. The roar or honk of cars and overly loud engines that wouldn't have been present seven months ago. Let alone pollute the city with undesirable sound or chemicals.

Maryanne has plans, however. She bides her time. Waits. Observes Anika and Mel ...
OOC wrote:Firstly, all of you may choose to stay awake … for whatever reason. Everyone who is awake, or wakes up during this scene, will have the Fatigued condition. This includes Maryanne, as she is purposefully staying up. Maryanne will also be needing to spend that 1 HP for her Stealth.

If Mel decides to stay up, she may make an Insight check to pick up on Maryanne pretending to be asleep. Alternatively a -5 Perception check may be used to pick up on activity in the room if she is asleep. Mel may use Deception to pretend to be asleep or Stealth … if you can come up with a reasonable idea for it being applicable in the context of pretending to be asleep or going unnoticed during Maryanne peaking into Rodney's underwear drawer. In either case, Maryanne's Perception/Insight will receive a -3. There is a little bit of light from some electronics in the room with digital displays, such as an alarm clock, but it is still difficult to see in detail.

I am going to hold off on responding to Maryanne's actions until MrDent has supplied input for Mel's activity, or lack there of, at this point.

Since Mel had actively looked for potential improvised weapons in Rodney's room, make a Perception check. I'll let you know if she finds anything of quality of if she only finds fragile things that would break after one or two attacks.

In the living room … Jamie and Russel, make Perception checks. -5 if your characters went to sleep.

At this point I want everyone to begin keeping a public record of their HP and Conditions in their posts if they have not already.

Russel Briggs
HP: 2 LP: 2
CND: Annoyed and Fatigued

Russel went to sleep. He snores in fits, goes completely silent like the dead for what seems like it should bring him to the verge of dead, then gives a great snort of air intake.

oh, gosh.
Yet, like a dolphin, some part of his mind must stay awake, cataloging everything, mentally tracking the world around him. Every drip of a faucet, every buzz of a fly.

Mel Sarah
HP: 3
CND: Tired, but fine

Mel was tired and curled up closest to the optimal item she could use as a weapon. It was more habit than any sense the apartment was insecure because as far as she was concerned the city was occupied wartime ground. In her safe house, just getting to her was treacherous. On top of that, she had some basic security systems in place that survived the war. Here, she was exposed.

Before dozing off, she made small talk with Anika, asked her how and Jaime met, made sure to mention how cute a couple they were, and other teen girls talk about in regards to boys for 20 or so minutes. The last few days had been brutal on her. Even during the party and dancing it was showing a bit. Now, it was on full display. Despite falling asleep though, her mind was plotting how best to grab someone, anyone, who might be able to give her some lead on her sister.

If her sister wasn't enough to occupy her mind, was on alert of sorts. Every month, for three days her unit would be sent out into "hostile" territory as if being hunted as part of her training. After three days, if not discovered, they would win. Get discovered and not "take out" the finder before they radioed back they lost. Simple really. At the time, she dreaded those games, but now she realized the value and if she wasn't so tired she might have even been more alert. As it was though, her mind did its best with her tired body.
Not quite sure how conversations between teen girls go, so trying to not be too offensive in the post.

For her improvised weapon, Mel doesn't manage to find anything of great durability. Nothing metal. But there are couple a chairs in the room, made of wood. While cumbersome, it'd last longer that a sock with some batteries in it. In anycase, it offers some reassurance that she has a modestly reliable bludgeoning weapon in reach.

Maryanne, once assured that Anika are slumbering soundly, sits up and carefully begins to make her way towards Rodney's dresser. Though Mel senses some movement in the room through the cloud of sleep, it is not jarring. It is not sudden. Nor is it moving towards her. Her trained instinct to mount a defense is not triggered and so finds it easy to pull back from what might well be someone heading to the bathroom, and lean back into the comfort of sleep.

At the dresser Maryanne pulls open the underwear drawer. Carefully digging her way through Rodney's boxers she finds something hard at the bottom, which stands out from the bottom of the drawer. She can't see well in the dark, but between her limited sight, she has a vague description of what Rodney had hidden away. It was about eight inches long, a little over four inches wide, and a coupe inches thick. There were scratches and nicks in the item's smooth and cool surface. There was also a slight seam at the center point of it's thickness, suggesting it might be a container, but there was no external hinges.

While the sneaky girl was in the midst of her spy's endeavor, her hands in Rodney's underwear drawer, and her mind's eye painting an image of what she held in her hands, Maryanne hears a loud whisper behind her.

"Maryanne! What are you doing?!"

It was Anika, and Maryanne had been found out.
OOC wrote:Instead of asking for re-rolls on a tied opposed Skill check, I am going to give the success to the person with the higher relevant Ability modifier. In this case, Mel. However, it is only a slight success, and does not raise any alarms for Mel. Anika speaking up, may draw more attention at MrDent's discretion. Though she is speaking in a loud whisper, she is not trying to conceal her speech.

I am going to hold on filling in things for Russel until Jamie has had a chance to respond.

Jamie Kane

Jamie tossed and turned for some time before eventually succombing to exhaustion. It has been his pattern for sleep since RJ went missing. It would take some effort to wake him from the much needed sleep.

Wooden chair, always good in a pinch. Use it as a club first. Once its broken, poke people in just the right spot with it. Not like they are a vampire or anything, but in the eye or neck or something like that. Safe in the knowledge a weapon was handy, she dozed off having a dream about being pushed to take her turn on the video game contest going on. Hearing the moving about, she first thought it was in her dream before realizing it was movement in the room. Hand at the ready, it didn't register as a threat. Soldiers had their own way of moving and no weapon movement registered. If t was an attack, Stronghold wasn't the most stealthy in her experience. So, she let it go.

As she dozed off again, she heard a low whisper. Without moving or opening her eyes too much she replied simply. "Go back to bed you two and stop sneaking around. Whatever you are doing can't be more important than sleep." , whispers Mel starting to doze back off.
In 2E the tie breaker was the ranks if different, but couldn't find that language in the 3E book to suggest that.

While Maryanne was prying in Rodney's privacy and violating his underwear drawer in her quest for answers, Russel unaware of these events, heard something altogether different … and closer. A soft and steady hiss came from the front door leading into the apartment. Stirred to wakefulness by the unnatural noise, he found himself in darkness. Not the normal darkness of an apartment with electric devices that had digital displays. Total darkness. He noted that the refrigerator had stopped it's routine and predictable pattern of on again off again humming. The power was out … and something what at the door.

CaptainChaos, since Jamie is sound asleep do not feel pressured to try and work in flavor text.
At the same time, in Rodeny's bedroom, Maryanne notices the faint light of Rodney's alarm clock go out. Robbing her of the tiny measure of illumination she had used to navigate the unfamiliar room.

Maryanne Fairweather
HP: 1
Condition: Fatigued

Fuck.

She supposed she hadn't been quite as silent as she'd thought. Still, not unsalvageable. Not yet. This...would have to be executed near-perfectly, though.

Maryanne stood up and turned around slowly, holding a pair of Rodney's underwear. Her eyes were half-lidded and unfocused, expression vacant and mouth hanging slightly open.

"...dad...?" she mumbled, "think...these're yours...y'gotta stop...putting em with mine..." She moved a step towards Anita, doing a careful impression of a sleepwalker's shuffling gait, and attempted to press the garment into her hands. "...put these away...gonna go start the car..." She turned to shuffle towards a random corner of the room - or, where a random corner of the room had been just a second ago. Protected by the sudden pitch blackness, Maryanne dropped the sleepwalker expression and quickly glanced around. No digital alarm screen, suddenly. Power outage...?

If he can, Russel will call out, "Danger! Gas! Attack! Danger!" Then sit up swinging his feet over the couch. He'd been too ick-ed out at the thought of borrowing someone else's clothes so slept in his (including socks). He bent to slip on his own shoes, he'd need those to run away effectively.

Maryanne can't see Anika's face well enough to guage her reaction via expression, but as she puts on her performance of sleepwalking she can hear Anika's voice well enough.

"Maryanne, stop playing. What are you ... ? I don't want those!"

The last is exclaimed as Maryanne forces a wad of undergarments into Anika's hand. Mel is witness to the sounds of … she has no idea what is going on between Maryanne and Anika. But she gets to hear every weird and awkward second of it. A short while later there is the sound of a thump as Maryanne bangs into a table in her effort to find a corner to retreat to. Then there is a shout from the living room. Russel's voice.

"Danger! Gas! Attack! Danger!"

In the livingroom Jamie hears Russel's warning cry as well. But he's groggy and slow to rouse, having been held firmly in the embrace of sweet slumber.

Russel take a deep breath before yelling, and by the time he finishes shouting, he feels like he hasn't sleep in weeks. His body want, no needs, rest. Though he cannot see a thing in the darkness Russel can feel a current of air coming from the door. A soft thump, then a collection of rapid footsteps … and a hum from beyond.

We are entering combat rounds. Everyone roll Initiative.

Jamie and Rodney are considered surprised this round, as they were both well and truly asleep. They do not act this round and are considered both Stunned and Vulnerable until their turn next round.

If Russel wants to get his shoes on, or anyone wants to put on clothes/grab items, you may do so on your turn. It will, however, take a Move Action to do these types of things.

Presently you are all in darkness. Meaning, anyone you try to target has Total Concealment versus you, and you cannot accurately assess your environment.

Mel heard the words and instantly regretted not heading back to her safe house.
I put a fatigue condition on her to reflect being already tired and not getting a full nights sleep.
