[IC] Four Horsemen: Wager

Post by mrdent12 »

On January 2, while others were already breaking their resolutions, just a little, or going back into work begrudgingly the world changed. It wasn't a change most would notice though. For at least four people around the world though, after doing something horrible, they weren't punished. On the contrary, they were rewarded with powers and a purpose that drove them to bring about the end of the world as people know it. There was no roadmap or guide, only a pull.

In the following days, as everyone got acclimated to their powers and new abilities their minds were haunted by a vision. At first it was just a vague image. Something out of a poorly shot horror movie or intentional art house work meant to be interpretive. Over the next few days though it came into focus as flashes of a metal ring with strange markings on it not associated with any current or ancient culture known. On top of that, there was a strange buzzing in everyones head as if voices were trying to come through yet not quite clear.

Image

On January 9, everything changed and became clear. It’s a sunny, busy day on the Golden Gate bridge with more than the usual Bay Area rush hour traffic due to two major events colliding at the worst possible time. It was one of those things that just seemed to happen since your awakening. First your powers and now a call to the bridge from the image in your mind beaconing you along with the voices in in your head getting clearer as you approach the bridge.

Closer to the bridge, the whole reason for the extra traffic becomes apparent. The Russian ambassador's motorcade complete with police escort is slowing all of traffic down. In addition a military convoy rather large and out of the usual is rolling through complete with halftracks full of troops, light tanks, and missiles. Intermixed with all of the spectacle is cars, a school bus full of kids that look to be screaming from a sugar high, a petrol truck with a driver who wishes he was elsewhere, and of course a cement truck that had a late job in the city. On top of everything else is a larger than normal amount of trucks. Along the walk ways on the side, people are walking or biking in hopes to avoid the mad traffic. Somewhere in this traffic jam is your prize. You can feel it in your bones just as the voices in your head become more clear.

Image
And so it begins. Any research you want to do on the ring let me know. While you won't be able to understand the symbols, other information might be able to be gotten depending on what you roll.

Until the bridge, you can't make out the voices. Once everyone starts converging though, you can communicate over the mental link.

I will leave it to each of you to decide how you approach.

Catastrophe

6 Days ago:

Kaito sat amidst the fresh set of boxes in amidst a plethora of moods. He didn't sleep well the past night or two and now he was reading a followup article proclaiming the latest counts; 40 injured or dead in the mysterious plane crash attributed to 'technical malfunctions' suffered by the French airliner.

He mentally reviewed the various IP spoofers and packet redirections he used that day. Even if someone did sort through it all to get this general area, he and his family would be gone in less than a week to some place in America - a place called Camp Parks in Dublin, California. Unlike all the other moves and assignments and selfish uprootings spawned from his father's career, this one didn't seem so bad.

3 days ago:

Kaito uploaded his newest scan - the clearest image to date of the weird metal disk plaguing his dreams. So far his searches had turned up nothing. He'd checked every Asian cultural site and museum archive he could get in to. This time he revised the search 'Four characters, metal, wheel, ring, ominous' and set it to trolling as wide a net as possible and report any results to his anonymous TOR account.
Investigation: 1d20+15 16, Ominous first roll of the game.
6 hours ago:

He had to leave. He was... called... in some way. The jet lag had all but disappeared, gone in the rush of urgency. He grabbed a few of his best laptops and started walking. He had no great skill at stealth but it was god-awful early in the morning and the military bases on U.S. Soil weren't as tightly patrolled as ones overseas. Still, he snuck out the back way, across some tracks and ducked what might have been an oncoming patrol into a junk yard.

There he saw it. He didn't know what left this old news van in the sorry state it was in; he only it was HIS, as sure as the weird purplish-black smoke that came when he called was HIS as well. It was that which came to his beck-and-call now. It surrounded the van with it's added array of antennae and dishes on top and at once the engine turned over and the lights came on. He was saddened to see his... whatever-he-did failed to improve upon the fading paint and external rust that obscured whatever news agency originally commissioned this otherwise beauty of audio-visual I/O transportation.

Kaito hopped in and installed his laptops in the places otherwise stripped of electronics and got behind the driver's seat, putting her in gear, and heading for the Golden Gate Bridge.

2 hours ago:

Kaito stopped to try to establish some amount of control of the situation while being led around by the nose by some mysterious calling. First, he'd hack the DOT control of lights and toll booths allowing access onto the bridge. He wouldn't do anything with those right now, but he reserved the right to do so in the futre. He'd also set the Communication gear at his disposal to scan police and military frequencies and have that as a running commentary in the background.

January 2nd

He stared at the man in the mirror, unflinching, unblinking, utterly devoid of any emotion at all. Every time he moved, so did the man in front of him. Every twitch of a brow, every squint of an eye, every sneer of a lip, the man copied it perfectly. Memories within his head told him what what this man's name was. Michel Savage, twenty five, no living family, no girlfriend, and part of a gang of triad-wannabes known as the Third Dynasty. Don't actually speak any language other then English, showing off just what a group of posers they really were.

In the back of his mind though, he remembers the life of a spoiled kid named Eric Reynolds, who only just yesterday was taken down after a six hour shootout resulted in the deaths of nineteen people, with seven more in critical condition. Kid had some lucky shots. Maybe even a natural talent. Irrelevant now though, as the man before him couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Pretty sick with a blade though, his memories were pretty graphic on that account.

Regardless. Something strange has happened, and the intelligence behind the man in the mirror couldn't understand where the line between Eric ended and Michael began. For some reason though, he just didn't care. Normal people should be panicking right about now, maybe calling the hospital, or the police if he had a death wish. Some might consider this a second chance to start anew, be different then they were in their previous lives. The intelligence didn't know yet what to do. In the very back of it's mind however, there was an urge. A push for something wonderful, something terrible, something... Chaotic.

The man in the mirror smiled.

January 6th

It was easy. Dethroning that weak-willed prick of a man and cementing himself as the real brains of the operation had only taken a few well timed speeches to turn Ming's own men against him, and then one final word to make the man utterly humiliate himself before everyone. Then an idea sprung into the intelligence's head, something wicked and awful, yet deliciously tantalizing all the same. So he snapped his fingers, and his closest supported handed him a knife. Then he told Ming that he had dishonored himself and his family, and there was only one way for him to regain it.

Without hesitation the man obeyed. Beautiful Mike could only smile.

January 8th

Why was he here? Why did he come to this city? For what purposes did that urge to commit chaos encourage this? Perhaps that ring held answers.

The building was almost too easy to infiltrate and make his own little home away from home, though his men looked awkward trying to pull off the white collar look. Some of the employees needed stronger words of encouragement to look the other way. One woman in particular was exceptionally stubborn towards the very end. No matter. It was his now, and that was all that really mattered.

January 9th

"So many little ants scurrying about their day, working for the colony in each their own way~" He hummed aloud from his little perch on a rooftop's edge. Seeing it all from up high just to get the biggest picture of it all in his head. "What a shame it'd be if some boy came by, a mirror in hand and a smile so sly~"

Beautiful Mike found himself grinning as he turned back towards the stairwell. Even if he didn't find the answers he sought, perhaps he'd have a bit of fun on that little bridge after all.

ooc: No rolls on my end. He'll be approaching the bridge on foot.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

Now:

"Man! driving in this city sucks!" he says to no one as his Rusty Van lurches through the traffic.

Unbeknownst to him that outburst echoes through the buzzing in different people's heads.

He looks around trying to figure out why he was here.

Garald Medvedev
HP: 1
CND: Healthy

A lot of people would have sought professional psychiatric help when they started to believe they had super powers, heard buzz-voices, and had compulsive thoughts of strange things. For Garald, there was a surety and affirmation of greatness. He didn't just accept what was happening though. He wanted to understand it. Control it. More information was needed though. In idle moments, when his thoughts were not focused and the images crept in, Garald took to drawing the distorted images. He had piles of haphazardly scribbled pictures in his apartment getting progressively more detailed and accurate as the days went on until the clear ring and foreign markings now clear in his mind's eyes was translated into he physical world with ink and paper.

After spending a couple days trying to search libraries and the internet for a match to what he had drawn, what he had envisioned, Garald came up with nothing. He wasn't an investigator, archeologist … or whatever relevant professional skill that was required for tracking down this object that entered his thoughts unbidden. He had even cracked open some old log books of what amounted for war loot in and reviewed some historical documents that touched on the subject. Nothing. Garald was perfectly comfortable delegating to subordinates, however. Fortunately, he knew a private that was keen on a female officer and he knew a way to set the two up, or at least provide the man more time with his desired love interest. The private had proven competent at tracking items through shipping manifests in the past, maybe he could find something tangible to make his imaginary ring.

Garald wasn't counting on the private finding anything. It was entirely possible he would get no useful answers on the topic.

Garald was having lunch, sampling some food from local street vendors, when the pull tugged him out of his day to day affairs. Or rather he had purchased some, but failed to feel the need to eat. The food was handed off to a homeless man pushing a cart of soda cans as Garald hailed a taxi. Initially he did not have a clear idea of where he was going. He gave the driver directions though. Left up ahead. Take the next right. Down that road there. If this irritated the driver, he didn't care. When they reached the congested bridge, and Garald knew it was here that he needed to be, he got paid the driver and exited the vehicle abruptly.

He looking over the jam he took note of the cause. Two convoys, one obviously military and the other was had a vehicle with Russian embassy plates. Who scheduled this mess, Garald wondered as he studied the going ons on the bridge. It looked like the potential for a perfect storm. There was so much potential for tragedy, and on top of it, a diplomatic catastrophe. If the right conditions were met, and it wouldn't take much. Intruding into his brooding was a stranger's voice.
Kaito wrote:"Man! driving in this city sucks!"
The dark haired Russian stopped after a couple steps. His brow furrowed as he pulled his attention temporarily away from his duel search for … the source … and inspection of the convoys. Garald looked around his immediate area. No one was speaking at him. None of the voices he heard holding audible conversations amongst pedestrians or bicyclists matched the youth he'd heard. Venturing to respond Garald did not open his mouth, but did so as though holding an internal conversation with himself.

"Who are you?"
OOC wrote:I'll also make an Expertise Military check to try and get a read on the military convoy. Does it seem like whoever scheduled this convoy's movements was a moron? As an aside, is there anything relating to the Russian Ambassador's movements/schedule today that Garald would be privy to for whatever reason?

Voices, now. Why were there voices?

Mike shook his head to try and dislodge it, those feint words at the very edge of his perception, and tried to continue on. Then there was another one, louder, closer.
"Who are you?"
What the hell-!?

It distracted him enough that he found himself nearly walking straight into the path of an old rusty looking news van. "Shit! Hey man, I'm walking here, watch your damn step!" He spat, before quickly moving past it. So what if that was his own fault. He expected them to be the ones moving out of his way anyway.

"These stupid ants think they can just do whatever they want." His thoughts echoed. "They should be doing what I want."

Kaito slammed on the break, his hand bracing against the steering column. This activated the van's newly restored horn. The sudden stop made the dilapidated van rock with the inertia. This was made more obvious by the dishes on top. The horn blast was protracted by called further attention especially as it was answered by a few annoyed motorists thinking he was honking at them and needing an outlet for their own frustrations.

Kaito looked around to the back of the van wondering if he'd had a stray in there with him and not knowing what to do if that were the case. Seeing no one he looked left and right to see if the words came in through the open windows. He locked eyes with the (admitted) good looking guy that almost barreled over the nearby rail separating pedestrians and bikers from the bridge traffic*. Kaito locked eyes with the man with an apologetic wave.

The youth starts to get offended at the man's second set of words when he realized the man hadn't spoken aloud. Also, taking another look at the pedestrian, Kaito could tell he was more... 'solid' somehow. Like everyone else was... transient... but the man was... lasting^.

"You, hey! Hey you!" he calls to the man. He gestures a 'come here' and makes haste to grab the tablet from the passenger seat. He swipes over to the most recent rendering of the runed metal ring and holds it up for the man to see. He repeats the 'come here' gesture and indicates the passenger seat.
[* Doctor Mal, from what I recall the last time I drove it, it's almost impossible for a walker to blunder into the car area of the Golden Gate bridge by accident. This was my attempt to work with what you'd written. Hope it's okay]

ooc: I've never been there, but I probably should've looked that up/had more common sense. Thanks for the save.

There was something about that voice.

When Mike turned to face it, he saw him. Normally when meeting another human for the first time, there was this urge to sow an idea, instill conflict, sway someone to his will, to utterly dominate. But here... Here there was a sense of mutual respect. As if this lone boy out of the thousands of humans he'd seen since waking up in this body was the only one worthy of being called an equal.

It was peculiar how welcoming that felt.

"Talkin' to me huh? Alright, fine. I'll bite." Spoke him, approaching with a charmed smile.

Melvin found himself pondering that weird image of a ring as he plodded down the side of the road, humming a low buzzing tune to himself, feeling that low thrum of awareness of the biomass around him. Insects individually were tiny, but he'd read somewhere, in the hazy memories of the handful of semesters of college he'd attended, that there were a few quintillion of them, and altogether, they weighed over 600 million tons. Needless to say, he couldn't sense that many around him right now. His awareness currently only stretched to a fraction of the Earth, maybe a dozen miles out, and at that distance, it got kind of fuzzy as to what kind of insect they were, but that was still a lot, enough that he didn't feel alone.

They salted the Earth, man... He knew the sin he'd committed, the death he brought. That moment of sheer awareness, as the bees began dying... and for no reason other than a few dead humans. He hadn't realized what evils the scientists had done to those bees, how mankind had twisted their very genome and perverted their purpose. They had merely been protecting their hives, and it was hardly their fault that there were humans there too. For lo, Death came over the world, and took their firstborn... and their second, and the whole famn damily... He chuckled, and spat to one side to clear his mouth of the oily residue to automobile exhaust. For a state that proclaimed itself so ecologically progressive, California fairly reeked of chemical pollution. But his objective lay ahead.

After he'd fled the site of the massacre he caused by his actions, the almost total loss of the colony he'd freed, the clouds of poisonous smoke that left the land barren and twisted, he'd gathered the remaining bees, and he'd begun his trek westwards from Pittsburgh. He had only managed to save one queen, immature, but the whispers of nature guided him, and, flesh of his flesh and blood of his blood, he'd made more, and he seeded the colonies as he crossed the country, this time being careful to set them where they would remain undisturbed until they could build in numbers. He was being called by something... something he couldn't quite describe except... the ring? Somehow, he felt like everything would be right when he found it, but he knew the value of avoiding being noticed now. He came into sight of the Golden Gate bridge, a bright red eyesore on the landscape, and somehow he knew that the goal was there.

He shuffled off to a nearby copse of pines, and lay down in the scrub nearby, out of sight, and let himself slip into something more comfortable. On the bridge, a hive of wasps suddenly stilled and began boiling out of their hive on the beams of the bridge. Somewhere... Suddenly, all of the wasps stilled as he heard voices. He had a moment of wondering if the acid he'd tried in college was coming back, but the feeling was too... he felt a kinship. His mental voice is the buzz of a thousand insects.
"HELlO? BrOtHeRs. I HAVe BROthErS? YoU Are Not PARt of The PROblEm, BUT Part oF The SOlution. NamaStE." He laughed, rasping and buzzing.

"WE seEk A riNG, an ArtIFaCt, and To cURE tHE eArtH, TO CleANSE It."

Kaito
Investigation: 1d20+15 16, Ominous first roll of the game.
Catastrophes investigations yield little in the way of anything concrete. There is the usual rumours about magical artifacts on conspiracy theory sites and mention of various rings of power in the occult corner of the internet, but most of it is so generic it could apply to anything. One thing is certain though, its shape and symbols fit the cliche of "magical" artifacts if archeologists and museum websites seeking funding or attendance are to be believed.
Kaito
technology: 1d20+18 34.
It is trivial for Kaito to get into the lights around the bridge and its various controls. By the looks of it, they are doing some work on the control software which is also contributing to the bad timing of the lights and forcing everyone to use the manual pay booths instead of FasTrak adding more delays to everyone trying to get home. His hack probably wouldn't even be noticed if he started messing with it he figured.
Garald
Expertise Military to see if he can dig up on thing object having any kind of military history, even if it is as loot. Expertis Military: 1d20+15 18

Using Connected to try to get someone with a lower rank to try to find something about the ring for him. Persuasion: 1d20+10 15
The ring symbol fits various holy wars, but none he can find match the ring description. In fact, the wars and battles he does find are more myths told in ancient stories taught in military courses to pass as a classical education.

Garalds other pursuit of helping an unlucky in love soldier in exchange for information yields similarly disappointing results. Artifacts found in dig sites get shipped everyday. So while the private does find mention of metal rings, the sheer amount of them make it impossible to track a specific one. Even the ones with sufficient description don't exactly match. One of the shipments did mention a cache of artifacts being shipped into the city for study, but the private was unable to find the truck it was on.
Garald
Expertise Military: 1d20+15 30
Given the tensions between Russia and the U.S, the military convoy is most likely a show of force meant to intimidate the Russian Ambassador who Garald knows is traveling into the city to meet with some contacts. While not advertised, it wasn't sent over a highly encrypted channel so was most likely intercepted. Russia seemed to expect it as they sent the word out to their various agents in the U.S. being a soldier, Garald was familiar with this showmanship and gathered the soldiers were likely armed to the teeth, but bored out of their minds.
Kaito
He'd also set the Communication gear at his disposal to scan police and military frequencies and have that as a running commentary in the background.
All of the military and police frequencies indicate the same thing. Bored soldiers told to be on high alert yet not in on the threat. The cops are also griping. All of them would rather be anywhere else than stuck in the traffic Chatter indicates they to were alerted to a threat, but it was also a vague one.
Everyone
As the Horsemen start communicating more, the location of the pull becomes more clear. It is not exact, but it is somewhere in the cluster of trucks, military convoy, and the Russian ambassador.

"Well I'll be. Seems we're all on the hunt for the same thing. Isn't that something." Mike spoke aloud, observing what the kid was trying to show him while the strangest voice he'd ever heard slipped through his head. Yet it was no less comforting in spite of it's oddness. Now wasn't that peculiar.

"We can talk details about the whole 'Earth cleansing' bit later, for now I think I know just where we need to go. First things first though... Let's set the groundwork, shall we? "

He stepped away from the guardrail and purposefully let himself bump into someone on the pedestrian. "Whoa! Shit, sorry man, didn't see you there. I was just lost in my own thoughts. It's a perfect day to just Go for a Walk you know? I bet you're enjoying the fresh air too. Haha, if only more people could just Slow Down and take in the sights, don't you agree?"

Garald's head turned, fixing his vision on the news van. Two beacons of people stood out there. The driver and a pedestrian. Then a third voice. Less human in composure. He listened, quickly ordering the strangeness in his head. He needed to compartmentalize. Focus on the objective.

"Agreed. This should also be easier if the crowd is not made discordant by cleansing measures."

At that he pulled his eyes off the image of the horrible rusted van and looked towards the gravitational pull of the ring. Keeping to the pedestrian walkway he began to move closer even as he communicated with his new allies.

"We have three major clusters that I am feeling the artifact is around. The American military convoy, the diplomatic motorcade, and those trucks."

"Before coming here I did some research. Didn't find out much, except that something fitting the description of our target was brought into the country recently. That means it may still be in transport. Still in a box or container."

"I suggest one of us hold back maintaining overwatch … an outside overview of the area … while the other three of us pick one of the three clusters and feel around for the ring."

Catastrophe

"Holy Shi.... How many of u....?" He stopped himself mid-thought, looking down at his latest computer rendering of the ring from his dreams. "Four." he says, noting the runes on the metal disk. "There are four of us aren't there? One per rune?"

"Holy... this is actually happening isn't it?" he says with an almost maniacal laugh in his voice. "Hey, I'm... well, they call me 'Glitch' or maybe 'Catastrophe'. Kaito... is my name, Kaito." he stammers, not knowing how to talk to the others, especially over the mental chat room they have going - the WhatsApp of the Apocalypse.

"Oh, hey, guys, I'm in their communications, the cops and the U.S. military guys', I mean. I control the booths too and could probably put things up on the big Marquees as well. Can we use that?" he asks, hope and eagerness to contribute in his tone.

"Oh, and I can break stuff... like really, really well. Like Master Class/ TED talk levels here. All this past week I've been finding more n more stuff."

As Zzzzt is going along the sides of the bridge and making his way unnoticed, he does notice one thing. There is rectangular objects painted to match the surfaces they are against. While not an expert by any stretch, it is clear they are explosives of some sort because of something that looks the shape of a small cell phone attached to the blocks. The phones are painted as well.
