The Outsiders - Titans' Tears (MnM 3e - IC)

Post by Bladewind »

Her long blonde hair was pushed back from her face by a red helmet, blue armor suggested a warrior of some kind but the design suggested aesthetics over functionality or protection. Greyish-purple boots padded softly as she crossed the corridors of the pristine hallways. Artificial light suffused the area in stark contrast to the darkness in the windows.

If one were to approach a window and look down, a barren and bleak surface suggested no signs of life. Only debris that vaguely looked as if it had been shaped and formed from stone suggested that there had once been a pre-technological civilization, but there were no signs of anything that had ever lived…

Above this sorry landscape, the blonde woman continued on her path, quickly reaching her destination. Her feet left the ground and she floated the rest of the way to what could be described as the command station or bridge of her satellite. Located in the center of the room, consoles and monitors activated at her approach. Two scrolled and flashed through profiles of people; pictures, statistics, descriptions. It was going a little too fast for anyone to actually read but slow enough that names and power archetype could be identified. The woman allowed the search to conduct itself, every once in a while the monitor would pause and the screen appeared to drag the file off to another area before continuing.

"Any luck, Lyla?" A disembodied voice asked the blonde haired woman. Without looking away from the monitor she was reading – images and reports of a site similar to the one below them – she answered.

"No. We are still behind. I have not been able to predict or anticipate a target until it is too late…" Sadness crept into the woman's voice. "It is time to assemble a team. We don't have the ability to intervene fast enough when I do find a target site. Even if it's only to save a few. Anything to start predicting and acting instead of searching and picking up the pieces…"

"Agreed." The voice answered, "Do you still plan the two tiered approached ? One scouting party and one strike team ?"

The monitor searching through profiles pinged, causing the conversation to stop for the moment. Lyla pushed a button on a device affixed to her forearm and the information transferred to a screen closer to her current location. She allowed herself the faintest smile as she surveyed the candidates selected.

"Yes, this is an excellent start. There will time for tears later, for now, the Titans return."

The armored woman addressed as Lyla floated to the screen where the search was ongoing and called up the candidates that were being selected to review in more detail. Seven people with very little in common - not even home dimensions - appeared as one potential team. Her body seemed to pulse with light for a moment, seven flashes in total, as she dispatched dimensional counterparts of her own to seek out her intended recruits.

A moment later, and several more pulses emanated from her form as she dispatched more duplicates of herself to obtain a second team.

The League of Assassins did not normally announce themselves - especially in numbers like this - and the heroes of Starling City were hard pressed to contain them. It was almost a losing battle as they were completely outnumbered. Robin was holding her own as was Nightwing. Mere meters away, Goldjacket, Beetle and Blackbird were faring less well..

And then two of the ninjas dropped, struck in the head by hockey pucks...

****

Through the sewers the Batwoman followed her prey, different and yet similar to the vampires that she had fought for so long. This one was more rat than bat, perhaps a werecreature of some kind. Definitely not what the benighted city. The Batowman noticed another pair of beings trying to be cautious and to mask their tracks - and probably succeeding to lesser able beings. Two more of the so-called Bat-Clan that she had unintentionally inspired. Two more that were in way over their heads. Batwoman judged by the markings on the uniforms that they were that she would also be looking after The Black Bat and Mr Spider...

****

Information cycled through Cybergirl's HUD, her targets were laying waste to the city, she didn't recognize these new assailants but it hardly mattered. Rampaging villains were rampaging villains and needed to be stopped. Questions and motives later. Through a cloud of dust she finally realized what she was facing... Parademons ! The beasts usually travelled in armies so fighting a single pair was odd, but no less of a threat to those that were in their way...

****

Beneath the waves of her world, Lo'Nyla followed the monstrous form of the Sea Devil known as Thresher - a vaguely humanoid shark - circled prey. For the most part, these so-called Sea Devils stayed away from Atlantis, but occasionally they made raids on outlying areas mostly to remind the Atlanteans that they existed. Some of the Sea Devils were much more... tractable than Thresher who appeared to be alone. Alone was when he was most dangerous...

***

The Scarab dodge another blast, still not getting a clear image of her adversary, and her teammate Goldstar had likewise proven unable to provide any beneficial intelligence on the matter. It was to be forgiven though, as the two were scrambling to get civilians out of harm's way, stay alive and try and contain their elusive foe.

Goldstar gestured as two people ducked futilely as debris rained down on them, a bean of inverted light shot from her hand and the debris was instantly vaporized. She didn't pause to congratulate herself, the normally jovial woman turned to try and see their foe again to no avail...

****

It was difficult to gain any ground - Darkseid's forces held so much of the Earth that pushin him back was nigh pointless. And those heroes that the New God had captured he corrupted and programmed to fight for him. It felt hopeless at times, but the few heroes left refused to give up. Finding herself once again in the ruins of Washington DC, Ardent sifted through rubble for supplies for the group of survivors she had just rescued. In the blackened skies, search lights were aimed on the ground, token efforts to find survivors but great tools at causing people to scurry and hide.

All at once, a firm hand clad in a metallic purple glove rested itself on Ardent's shoulder...

****

On a much happier world, at least to all appearance, Luna Zatara prepped for her latest performance. The thrill and excitement were hard to contain, but she still pushed through the preparations and went over her routine again... A crash from outside the stage did little to distract her - the stage hands just as often as not had accidents when setting things up and it never a major matter.

But then came a second, and a third and what sounded like a thunderclap... Moving quickly and quietly, Zatara quickly spots the source of the problem... The X-Titans... eight teen heroes from Xavier's School... but something was wrong. Their skin was red, they all had four eyes (an extra set in their forehead area) and they were attacking the theater seemingly at random.

Shianna Lo'Nyla
HP: 3 LP: 3
CND: in it deep

Some of the Sea Devils were much more... tractable than Thresher who appeared to be alone. Alone was when he was most dangerous...
Shianna was fleeing Atlantis. She had contraband artifacts that had mysteriously came to life when Atlantean guards came to her home. She knew she couldn't go back; not as things stood. She was just trying to make her way out and avoid any patrols, not that they were likely this far out. When she spied the huge threat - Thresher. Shianna immediately turned away, looking for a safer way out when the staff jerked in her hand. It startled her and her shoulder jolted painfully as the staff spin her of its own accord, pointing to the Sea Devil who hadn't yet noticed them.

"No," she said in a harsh whisper, "we don't want to get in that thing's way..." she pleaded, though a part of her felt silly arguing with an object.
Lo'Nyla turned to swim in a different direction but the staff jerked her back again, like a stubborn puppy that wanted to investigate a new scent. Shianna surprised frustration and forced her mind to work the problem. It had responded to her fear earlier, it must be responding to her fear now, but instead of fear for her own life (the thing driving her immediate actions), it must've tapped in to the underlying fear that the Monster would hurt more people (the compassion for others she knew she possessed). Her research into the objects were far from comprehensive but she knew enough to know they were relics from a hero. They had a hero's heart. Shianna turned back to the Devil, frowning. She needed the objects and maybe... just maybe, with enough good deeds, she can earn her way back in to Atlantis. Maybe, just maybe, she could have a hero's heart too.

"Okay, Cosmic Staff, let's go."

With that the staff propelled itself forward, Shianna barely hanging on but her enhance Atlantean strength augmented as it was by the cosmic belt around her waist. powered by the weak starlight that trickled down through the intervening sea for several centuries.

Like a javelin of light she darted through the water, her own Atlantean speed adding a little to the Staff's motive force. She tried to get in front of Thresher and spun to brandish the glowing staff defensively. She borrowed a line from ancient lore that she'd researched.

"You shall not pass!" she exclaimed in commanding Atlantean.

After watching Stargirl Season 1 they are playing it like the Cosmic Staff has an almost dog-like intelligence. Not enough to be an asset (like the Lantern Rings) but enough to give her motivation to do the Right Thing. I like the idea and I'd like to add it as a Complication and the GM is free to jerk her around (literally and figuratively) if you need her to be somewhere. Sound good?

The White Rabbit
3 HP | What's 'Normal', exactly?
Bladewind wrote: Thu May 06, 2021 11:54 pm On a much happier world, at least to all appearance, Luna Zatara prepped for her latest performance.

She'd been in the process of applying just a touch of makeup in front of her dressing-room mirror when the noise had initially started, leaving a slight smudge when her ruby-red lipstick found itself jerked to the side. It was an interesting look, for certain, and under normal circumstances she'd be all for keeping to help cultivate that veil of 'oddness' her fans had come to expect from her. Today was very important, however. The unveiling of a brand new show. Appearances were everything, so she needed to look her absolute best.

An alcohol wipe quickly undid the damage and she again pressed the stick against her lips, getting halfway through before the next thump happened. It caused her a slight pause, but her hand was steadier this time as she moved to finish. Only for her hand to jerk at the sound of a thunderclap, leaving a thick red line across her left cheek. A small clatter as she rather forcefully dropped the stick, her matching red eyes staring blankly into her reflection for half-a second before drifting to the reflected doorway of her open room.

With a snap of her fingers a hat found itself summoned from the brass stand in the corner and plopped right onto her head. It's fuzzy little ears twitched as something flowed between master and servant, unspoken bond forming between the pair. When she glanced back at her reflection, her clothes had reshaped themselves into something a little more comfortable, and her makeup had been reapplied in a way her mortal hands were incapable. 'Much better,' Luna's reflection spoke to her with a smile, before both turned and moved for their respective doors.

Her feet tingled as her shoes shifted, merging with her socks to form the fuzzy feet of a rabbit leaving a slight bounce to each subsequent footfall. "Lights, camera..."

The theatre seemed to darken of it's own accord, stagelights flashing on and panning over the panicked crowed before settling center-stage, a drumset was rolling itself even while it's drummer was already long-gone. The lights flashed off and back in the fraction of a second with a pop accompanying a huge puff of white smoke. A shadowy silhouette burst forth from the cloud accompanied by silver confetti, launching itself off the stage and landing near the Wingman-apparent.

"Action!" She cheered with a bright grin, coming to a standing position. Luna regarded the red-faced creature with minute curiosity, finding them certainly a little different then she remembered him. "...Do you think that was a little too much? It's my first scene, so I wanted it to look memorable."

Not waiting for an answer, she flicked her hand upwards, "Thguoht taht dolh, yllautca."

She blinked, "Oh, did my voice just change? It seemed softer before..."

The Batwoman

HP:1
CND: Fine

Barbara saw them clear as day, the way they blundered about, casting furtive glances into every dark corner, trying to beat back the cloying dark with a flashlight. She wished she could just leave them here and continue her hunt, but if wishes were horses...

The thing was close. She could feel it. It was not yet aware of her, but it would no doubt become aware of these would-be hunters sooner or later - and either flee or make mincemeat out of them. If something else did not get to them first.
There was no way she could just abandon them.
Cursing in her head, she turned around and skittered along the ceiling, her cape tucked into her belt, until she was directly above them. Then, with a move she had practiced maybe a hundred times, she freed the cape and let it open widely as she let go of the magic that allowed her to cling, gliding down much like an enormous bat and landing right between them, silent as a cat.
" Do you have a death wish?"she hisses, reaching into the darkness with her mind and calling forth the rats that dwelled in the sewers, a furry, squeaking tide. Just for emphasis.
Using the summon to call a rat swarm, just for show

Cyber Girl hasn't been around long but somehow she always seems to find Apokolypse' minions in her way. Her vision turns a bit red as she recognized the parademons. She zips between them and taps one on the shoulder. "No one invited you here. Catch me if you can." She then flies away from the populated area.

Only her strong will prevented Ardent from jumping at the unexpected contact, but her face paled when she saw the hand on her shoulder, then relaxed slightly when she saw it was probably not Darkseid. Darkseid would not be so peaceful in his approach for one thing...

She lowered her hand and the matching construct hand she had moving the rubble carefully lowered said rubble to the ground before she turned her head to regard the owner of the intruding armoured hand. As she did so she discretely reinforced her protective force field with a matching ring construct running under it, hoping it was sufficiently similar to be unnoticable.

"Hello?" she asked the owner of the hand. "Might I help you?"

Scarab
[Teddi Kord]
HP: 3
LP: 2
Condition: Fine

The Scarab dodge another blast, still not getting a clear image of her adversary, and her teammate Goldstar had likewise proven unable to provide any beneficial intelligence on the matter. It was to be forgiven though, as the two were scrambling to get civilians out of harm's way, stay alive and try and contain their elusive foe.

Goldstar gestured as two people ducked futilely as debris rained down on them, a bean of inverted light shot from her hand and the debris was instantly vaporized. She didn't pause to congratulate herself, the normally jovial woman turned to try and see their foe again to no avail...

Buzzing around on her mylar wings Scarab pointed a hand at the two civilians and a azure beam of energy shot out, wrapping around them then surprisingly gently pushes them a surprising distance away from the fight. "Nothing to see here folks, move along now." She says with a slight smile, even though her mask prevents it from being seen but knew her tone of voice conveyed its presence. Some of her friends were annoyed by her quipping, but the young woman refused to not try and inspire others by not giving into the darkness that Trigon and Brother Blood spread.

Turning her attention back to the real problem at hand Scarab mentally tells her armor to scan the electromagnetic spectrum to try and get a solid location on the unseen opponent.

Scarab (& Goldstar)

Finally, a break. Your opponent charges with a massive roar revealing himself to you.

Image

Grabbing Scarab by the shoulder and spinning her to face him, the armored beast roars again and leaps off, apparently hoping that the two heroes (or at least the Scarab) will give chase...

Batwoman

To his credit, Mr Spider does not jump or react to the Batwoman's appearance, but his partner clad in a white cape - dirtied from the sewer but nonetheless a beacon down in the dark - almost squeals in surprise. But then again, it could have been the sound of the rats...

"Nice one Bats. But whatever is stalking the city is down here. Mr Spider says, "My web-spheres tracked it down here and it needs to be stopped."

Starfish

"Hahaha!" The shark-man laughs heartily at the presence of the Atlantean exile. "What brings you all the way out here, Little Brittlestar ?" Obviously he knows of Starfish, using a pejorative version of the name Starfish to address her... His tone, although always gruff and aggressive just by virtue of the way his vocal chords were made, seemed more calm and less antagonistic than she might have expected.

"I'm meeting with friends. You think all of the oceans are now yours to command ? Pff. I don't listed to the 'Ocean Master' why would I listen to you?"

Cybergirl

Tapping the parademon, taunting it, and turning tail might get a reaction, but you'll need to stop to look back and see to be sure...

Ardent

The Violet Lantern turned calmly, expecting Luthor to be behind her in his signature armor. Instead, the bulked up form was bearded and had a thick mane of black hair. Haunted eyes literally glowed green, but sadly not from the signature presence of an Emerald Power Ring's user...

"Its good to see someone else carrying on the fight, you could bring a lot of hope to survivors... I have someone that wants to meet you..."

" I heard you from several corridors away. And if I heard you, the thing did as well. You're in over your heads"
, she says, allowing the rats to disperse. " If you want to become proper hunters, you need to seriously step up your game. Right now...", she continues, pausing to look at both of them before ending with, " you won't make it without my help."

Ardent (Violet Rayner-Wilson)
Hero Points: 3; Current Condition: Fine

"S ... Superman?!" she gasps. "Is that you?! What has happened to you?! I thought Darkseid had killed you along with all the other heroes!"

Although giving him the benefit of the doubt, the world is overrun by the forces of Darkseid, so as she talks to him she attempts to Evaluate how on the level he is.

Ardent attempts to see if he is on the level: 1D20+20 = [6]+20 = 26; using her Insight skill.

"Thank you! I do my best against Darkseid of course," she continues. "Despite his best efforts. Who wants to meet me and why? Is there hope in the fight?" Her last words are filled with desperate hope of her own that that is indeed the case...

Ardent

The man smiles, or at least tries to. It barely counts as one and you definitely can't tell if it reaches his eyes - it sure seems like it doesn't...

"Clark will do. I hardly qualify for that name anymore..." He sounds extremely tired and sad... "No this... this is Darkseid neutralizing me and leaving me to watch helplessly as he takes over..."

He gestures for you to follow. You do recall hearing rumors that Supreman had been depowered and left to wander. Parademons left him alone, in fact all of Darkseid's minions just ignored him now. Maybe with Luthor's armor that might change... Either way, you don't feel that he is trying to deceive you.

Batwoman

As if to prove her point, there is a sudden flurry of movement and something leaps onto the Black Bat, sinking its teeth into her neck and shoulder.

(Init please...)

Shianna winces at the moniker. It was little worse than the nickname given her by the locals on the other occasions the Staff had prompted her to daring heroics.

Shianna gestures to the prey that Thrasher had been circling. (it wasn't specified so I thought it was sentient things, but it occurs to me it might just be fish for eating). "If you're just here for a meal then, by all means, eat and move on, but you and your 'friends' have been known to cause trouble around these parts. I'll not have anyone hurt by you and yours, Thresher." she warns.

Edit: I should have asked if we were near any of the populated outer zones that they raid instead of assuming. There may have been no reason to confront him at all. My bad. I shouldn't have jumped the gun. I guess... let's see how this plays out.

Luna Zatara

Perturbed perhaps that her grand entrance had been upstaged, Luna instantly recognizes the mark of Trigon... the eight teens seem to be vessels for the demon father of the Titan, Raven Grey... including Raven herself. This easily topped the list of Not Good Things and was fairly high in the Call the Justice League list for that matter...

Disappointment about her show would have to wait... people needed saving...

The White Rabbit
3 HP | It's probably 'normal' to be a little worried

"Shoot! The girl exclaims, her spell going much wider then she'd anticipated. She nicked a few of those afflicted by Trigon, but she forgot to watch her surroundings! Her mother warned her about using magic carelessly around civilians for just reasons just like this.

Luna tapped the side of her hat just once before starting to wave her hands. An orchestral symphony slowly started to sound in the background, and a small antena seemed to extend from the center of her hat. "Justice league, come in Justice league! This is White Rabbit of the Teen Titans reserve!"

Pausing, she leapt several feet to where she floated in mid-air while thrusting her hand outwards. She needed to help the unprotected and prone masses before she fought, that was the #1 lesson her rather taught her
"Thgit dna guns pu meht parw!"

The plush carpeting of her theatre rippled and split, carpeted linnoliam flooring surging outward to cover those helpless and in danger with a protective shell hardened by magic.
