Eternal Champions Fighting Style:
Accurate Attack, Chokehold, Fast Grab, Power Attack, Withstand Damage

Powers:

Special Moves +10 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Red Tape +10 (+4 Ranged Damage, DC 19)
Ban Violence +8 (+6 Ranged Affliction, DC 18)
Initiative +5

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +11 (DC 21), Toughness +3 (+11 Diplomatic Immunity), Fortitude +5, Will +7

Complications:
Motivation (Money & Power)
Secret (Liar)- The Senator has a mistress in every State, and is in a million back pockets.
Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 12 + 5 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 5 (140)

Unfair Death: Dies of a heart attack after the lobbyists who had held him in their pockets suddenly turned on him and let his opponent win the election in a landslide.
Resolution: The Senator attempts to make up for his years of civil abuse by exposing all of his lies- as well as the lies of those around him- in the halls of Washington. His scandalous revelations destroy his chances of re-election, but also mark him as a changed noble man... who ends up making millions with a tell-all book and subsequent talk show appearances.

-A Headswap of Larcen Tyler, The Senator is basically one big personal "f*ck you" on behalf of gamers everywhere to Senator Joseph Lieberman. Lieberman, a Democrat who damn near became Vice President of the United States a decade after this game was released (he was Al Gore's running partner), but is known to most gamers for being the most strident opponent of violent video games in the 1990s. He endorsed John McCain in 2008, but Hillary Clinton in 2016- his political affiliations and styles aren't so easily folded into "Democrat" or "Republican", but he largely leaned to the left. But yeah, being the big name behind hating on Mortal Kombat and Night Trap made him persona-non-grata to video game enthusiasts (game playing magazines of the '90s frequently went into tirades against him for trying to put the kibosh on blood in games), and he's more responsible than any one person for the creation of the Video Game Ratings Board.

-Of course, despite being an insult to Lieberman, The Senator is actually a pretty awesome character, being almost glorious in his over-the-top antics. He uses Red Tape and money as projectile weapons, always does the "V" pose when he wins, and his stage theme (set at a corporate McDonald's knock-off) is an awesome metal rendition of Hail to the Chief. He ends up being one of the funnier Fighting Game characters out there- a "Joke Character" who is 100% playable, clever social satire (a politician whose style is listed as "Dishonesty" and all his moves imply dirty tactics, stalling, and insulting people, while paying homage to the almighty dollar), and an enviable personal attack on someone. The Senator is unlocked by going into "Neophyte" mode and winning every match via Time Over.

-And thankfully I finally found a website that outlined all of his moves. Red Tape, Voter Pin Stab & Donate are Blasts (the last one flips a guy upside-down and sucks some life away, so it'd be a weaken in M&M terms, but is still a blast in Eternal Champions), he can Teleport, Ban Violence (prevents the enemy from Attacking), or gain Diplomatic Immunity (basically becoming an immobile, hard-to-damage statue waving the American flag). There's also Rebuttal (a standard Deflect for this game). Though I'm only really guessing on what "Mud Slinger" is. At least one of them is a Teleport Drop move, though, and another looks like he's opening his wallet and shooting out a wad of... um... white stuff?

Animal Characters

Post by Jabroniville »

THE ANIMAL CHARACTERS:
-A funny thing Sega did for Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side was introduce some of Fighting Games' very first Joke Characters- a quintet of goofy, poorly-animated ANIMALS that had all suffered humorous, dark fates and are now fighting in the same tournament for the purpose of resurrection. Hooter the Owl, Zuni the Monkey, Crispy the Chicken, Slither the Snake and Yappy the Dog are super-tiny, fairly hard-to-hit, and have some Special Moves, but are generally not very competitive with the major fighters- their attacks do too little damage, and they have half the Moves of anyone else in the game. But still, given how far this game was ahead of people like Dan Hibiki makes you realize how many crazy things they were throwing into this forgotten little series.

-Each Animal is Small Sized, doesn't do much damage (but usually more than a baseline Animal of that type), and has limited Special Moves, but is still a bit smarter than a normal creature of their species (Yappy for example knows enough to cut a brakeline on a car... but not enough to do it right the first time). At PL 6, they're not enough of a challenge for a more-varied, stronger PL 8 Eternal Champion, but it's something. Their similar statlines makes them pretty equal in cost. I do not believe they get Fatalities.

Unfair Death: Killed by a helicopter in 1967 Taiwan.
Resolution: Chickens everywhere learn egg fu during a chicken riot to convince the world to choose vegetarianism.

-Crispy (modified from my Cassowary build) is totally insane, and has a move that summons a FARMER to run in with an axe, chop off his head, and therefore causes him to go into a frenzied, repeated, headless attack! He fails to take damage from this, but it's basically just a very weird descriptor for a Multiattack power.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Monkeys cannot speak to humans.
Enemy (Rival Males)- Rival Males constantly seek to up-end a male leader's territory, and they must always be on the watch, lest rivals take their females.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 7 (78)

Unfair Death: Accidentally stepped on by an Elephant while trying to warn his trainer of an oil fire- this distracted the audience, causing a mass fatality from the flames.
Resolution: Gets the elephant to extinguish the flames, setting off a huge boom in business with this "new act".

-Your everyday Monkey, but he can toss Bananas. To unlock Zuni, play against the computer in "Duel Mode", choose Chin Wo's stage, and execute a Sudden Death to kill your opponent. He actually gets pretty long reach for a small animal, having a rolling front kick and stretching back REALLY far for another one- the guy on a YouTube playthrough pretty much exclusively spams both.

Total: Abilities: 6 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 17 (66)

Unfair Death: Burned at the stake as the familiar of his master Vaspian.
Resolution: Unknown

-Hooter is an extremely tiny owl that constantly flaps about the screen, able to rise to the top without needing to "jump". Given that and his tiny size, I'm sure he's a real nuisance to fight. His bizarre win animation consists of him spinning his head around multiple times, then putting on a pair of sunglasses and doing a "thumbs down" gesture. To unlock Hooter, you must play a "Double Elimination" game and lose the first round, then win the overall tournament. Hooter eventually becomes Xavier Pendragon's familiar in one ending, I think.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 6 (69)

Unfair Death: Tried to chew the brakeline of an evil relative of her deceased owner, but was run over by accident instead.
Resolution: Unknown.

-Learning Shih-Tzu Fu from one of the Emperor of China's dogs while in a kennel, Yappy was nonetheless unable to defend herself when a relative of her beloved late owner kicked her out on the street, thus denying her the lady's inheritance. Disabled (Senses)- Snakes have poor eyesight & hearing.
Power Loss (Venom)- Snakes must penetrate the skin to envenomate their prey; creatures with too much raw toughness (above +8) or any amount of Impervious over the bitten area are immune.
Weakness (Cold-Blooded)- Reptiles are cold-blooded- that is, their bodies are the same temperature as the air around them. As such, they are slow & sluggish in cold temperatures, and will die quickly if left in winter-like conditions. They must warm up before they are any good.

Total: Abilities: 14 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 10 (76)

Unfair Death: Killed by a robber who invaded the bar where he worked as a bouncer.
Resolution: Unknown.

-Slither was raised from egghood by a bartender, who trained him in Brawling and made him the bar's security. Despite looking like a Rattlesnake, he has no Poison in-game, so he loses out on that pretty handy power-set from my Rattlesnake build.

-The Eternal Champion is the Final Boss of the first game, and of the "normal" mode in the second- a Cosmic character, he recognizes the good that the various Champions may have done if they'd survived, and so offers them the chance for resurrection. However, they have to fight each other in a tournament, they beat HIM, to do so, because that's the way of cosmic beings and such. You may play as the Eternal Champion if you win twice in "Champion" mode, and he's only available in "Duel" mode (against your friends).

-So THIS asshole basically makes you beat him five friggin' times to win the match- after each victory, he resurrects fully with a new form (Normal, Shark, Hawk, Tiger & Dragon in all) that uses different tactics and moves, while you only get one-third of your previous health back. Oh, but it's all for the best, since he's going to resurrect you if you win and allow you to fix time. As a Shark, he has a "Fin Attack" (sort of a streaking ground-based attack), there's a "Sawblade" for the Hawk Form, a Cartwheel Attack for Tiger, and Fireballs for the Dragon. The second game adds Unicorn, Elephant, Millipede & Electric Eel to the mix, meaning you have to beat him EVEN MORE TIMES. The trick therefore is that the fight is a HUGE, HUGE SLOG, as you have to repeatedly beat the guy down before he comes back- the war of attrition will mess you up, since your own Health won't regenerate as quickly. It's kinda neat how his Energy Form-self changes colour (and hand shape) with each "Form", since most of the sprite is just the moving cloak.

-Your classic over-the-top Boss character, the Eternal Champion is pricey mainly because he can resurrect himself repeatedly, has bloated Skills (thanks to mastery of Magic & History), and great Defenses & Mental Abilities. He's overall only PL 10, but very versatile, with the best ranged attack around, as well as a deadly Multiattack.

His origin story?
haha, I forget which game this is from. I think I've seen images of it before.
That's Senator Armstrong from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Raiden's spinoff game. It's pretty great.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Raiden, a cyborg ninja has to fight a Private Military Company starting a war in Pakistan with their own cyborgs...and all part of a plan by Senator Armstrong for America to...become a Libertarian/Psychotic country?

Good game, not too long. Just played it a week ago for the second time.

-The Dark Champion is the Final Boss of the Sega CD version of Eternal Champions, and can be playable if you do a Vendetta (Fatality) move in every match in "Champion" mode... while also never having to continue. His concept is that he's the dark form of the Eternal Champion, and seeks to undo fate and allow the world to continue to its chaotic close.

-Yeah... these games were a BITCH to fight, apparently. Not only do the enemies block your EVERY ATTACK, but if you lose to one of them, you have to repeat that fight, AND THE ONE BEFORE IT. And then, when you FINALLY encounter The Dark Champion, you have to BEAT HIM IN ONE GO, or else you're turned back to the beginning of the game! Oh, and did I mention that he's hard as hell to kill, ALSO blocks everything, and can hit you with and endless storm of high-powered, lethal attacks from which you can barely attack him back. Hell, in one of them, he FLIES ABOVE THE SCREEN, and rains elemental powers on top of you! Oh yeah and he can spam out his Special Moves whenever he wants because he has no meter preventing that.

-PL 11 at various things (including his high Defenses & Toughness), The Dark Champion is an INSANE challenge for anyone- he could take out members of The Avengers, much less the PL 8 adversaries he'd face in Eternal Champions. Watching him fight on YouTube is insane- most Fighting Game End Bosses are tough, sure, but they still use NORMAL TACTICS. Punches & Blasts and stuff... they're usually just faster. The Dark Champion tends to not even be that quick... he just has moves that disallow you from ACTUALLY HURTING HIM (the Earthquake form makes him Insubstantial, while his Fire Rain & Boulder powers let him fly beyond where any character could reach him and rain down huge, hard-to-dodge attacks).

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Midknight! Larcen Tyler! Animals! The Eternal Champion!)

And that's it for Eternal Champions! It was kind of a nice surprise to find so many weird powers listed amongst their number, because I was afraid of the builds being simply the same PL 8 martial artist dude with slight modifications to their skills. Instead, I got a ton of Deflectors, a Body Switcher, guys who can slow or neutralize others' abilities, some Shapeshifters, temporarily-invincible guys and more! The gave was so uniquely original in this regard that it's easy to forgive the fact that it's just a rip-off of Mortal Kombat.

The uniqueness and weirdness of their powers has the odd side effect of making the EC guys VERY pricey compared to their Capcom & Midway friends, or SNK's for that matter. Altogether, despite being PL 8, most of these guys hit 140 points, equal to the PL 9 guys of Killer Instinct (who have a lot of Multiattack stuff and higher strength to boost their cost) and Mortal Kombat (plenty of weird Affliktions and more Combat Advantages in general). Compare this to Capcom's fighters, where the best guys are typically around 150 points (Ken, Ryu, Vega... Chun-Li & Guile are even higher at 180 points), but most of the non-Special Agent types are PL 9s who are much cheaper (Yun, Yang, E. Honda, T. Hawk, Balrog) because they get their Powers for cheap, given that they're more limited. In fact, most Capcom fighters are higher-tier in general, and better MARTIAL ARTISTS (they have WAY more Advantages in close-combat than anyone from EC or Killer Instinct), but are comparatively less pricey for their Power Levels.
