The Dark Queen in the Mirror:
-Queen Nehalennia (named for an ancient Goddess, and the spelling is all over the place so don't even bother trying to keep it consistent) is the Big Bad of Sailor Moon SuperS, though we don't really know her true purpose for ages. Hell, Naoko Takeuchi must have kept it a secret until the very end, because we know NOTHING about her until a couple of episodes before the Season Finale- she's just some Evil Queen hoping to gain Pegasus's power for herself. We don't see her at all for the first half, and it isn't until the Amazoness Quartet debut that we even see what she looks like- she's a smoking-hot Demon MILF with elf-ears, purple Narrow Mature Woman Eyes Of Evil, and long, long hair. She appears to her minion Zirconia from behind a mirror, and grows more and more impatient with all the failures. Finally, we learn that she's after the "Golden Crystal", held by Pegasus... who is actually Helios, Guardian of Elysion.

-Finally... FINALLY... we get some backstory for the Queen- as the ruler of her own land in the ancient past, she desired not only the Crystal, but "The Prince himself", as she wanted Helios (despite him being suuuuuuuuuper young-looking compared to her). But with her darkness being sensed by Queen Serenity, she was exiled to the "Dead Moon", living in darkness for centuries. Finally, she gained access to our world via using the dreams of the Amazoness Quartet to power her arrival. And they invaded Elysion and captured Helios, who cast off his essence as "Pegasus", lying wait in the beautiful dreams of an innocent person. And it turns out that Zirconia is the embodiment of her greatest fear- growing old and ugly.

-See, it turns out that the Queen gives her full backstory in the VERY last episode of SuperS- she describes her life as a beautiful Queen (complete with Round Eyes Of Beautiful Youth) and fawning subjects, but how gazing into a mirror made her realize she was doomed to turn into a wrinkled old purple crone. Fearful, she consumed the Dream Mirrors of her entire kingdom, giving her eternal youth and turning the entire land into a sea of Living Corpses (the weirdos that make up the Dead Moon Circus). So her desire is to never grow old, while Chibi-Usa's dream in this season is to grow older and see what life holds- a contrast between villainess and heroine. Zirconia had captured Chibi-Usa and the Queen used her to capture Pegasus for real, gaining the Crystal and absorbing the dreams of all humanity. Finally, however, the Queen is beaten- when she betrays the Quartet, they spitefully steal the Golden Crystal back from her- Chibi-Usa does a "Clap If You Believe!" thing and empowers all Earth's young dreams to give the Crystal more power, and the Queen is beaten and turned into a crone. Finally, she is re-exiled back to the Dead Moon- trapped in the mirror, she retains her beauty, so is at least partially satisfied.

-Curiously, however, we would not see the last of her! Sailor Stars, the final season of the show, would tack on an extra "Nehalennia Redux" arc, as she's empowered by Sailor Galaxia, the ultimate Big Bad! Eventually she'd get a "Redemption Arc" of her very own!

Manga Nehalennia:
-In the manga, the Queen is seen as the dark mirror image of Queen Serenity. She is the queen of the "Dark Center of the Moon", having existed for centuries. When Princess Serenity was born, Nehalennia just Maleficents in and is all "HEY YOU FUCKERS!", but Queen Serenity seals her away with the Moon Stick. Trapped in a dark mirror, Nehalennia cast a curse that the Moon Kingdom would fall, and the Princess would never inherit the throne- the backstory for the invasion of the Dark Kingdom. Laying in wait, she breaches her prison during a solar eclipse and brainwashes Sailor Chibi-Moon's four sleeping guardians, the Sailor Quartet, and turns them into her minions. Desiring the Silver Crystal, she invades Elysion and takes over the world of Dreams, capturing Helios in the process- he enters Chibi-Usa's dreams to hide out, and finally the Golden Crystal is found within Mamoru's body, and Nehalennia is defeated by Eternal Sailor Moon, who shrivels her into a wizened old woman, then traps her in a mirror once more. She never reappears, so the big Sailor Stars arc was merely filler. Hell, I think this version is even more awesome.

Nehalennia's Power:
-The Queen's powers are a bit tricky to figure out- as a fighter, she mostly engaged with the Sailors while empowered by the Golden Crystal (which gave her the power to easily deflect their best attacks with a shield of energy). But she casts spider webs over much of Tokyo, capturing Pegasus wipes the world of dreams, and she can definitely blast away even without the Crystal- she easily takes out both the Sailors and the Amazoness Quartet in this way.

Sailor Moon S: The Movie

Luna's human form.

SAILOR MOON S- THE MOVIE:
-So they released another one-hour feature after the end of Sailor Moon Super, and again, it's out of continuity. Unsually, however, it's based off of a manga story- a side-story Naoko Takeuchi did on larger paper in a "tankobon" (like a trade paperback for us). This movie's ALSO about a Giant Space Meteor like Sailor Moon R was, with the magical Snow Princess Kaguya arriving on her icy meteorite to take over the planet and remake it in her own image. And HOLY CRAP is she "Image Comics" levels of naked. Like, she has to have invisible nipples or something, because her shirt covers almost nothing.

The gang gets a showcase at an outdoor market, giving us some fun shots of the group- and an iconic scene where they try a "Punch-Testing Machine" and Usagi scores 35 (and bonks herself with the punching bag), Minako 65, Rei 80, and Mako casually one-hands it and scores 100. Plus there's Haruka, Michiru & Setsuna, meaning we get nine Sailors for this one!

More of the subplot sees a Japanese astronaut named Himeko (note: "Hime", her nickname, means "Princess" in Japanese) getting a lot of public focus for an impending trip to the moon, Luna catching a cold, and an astronomer named Kakeru noticing Kaguya's meteorite and picking up a crystal offshoot from it. The plot threads together when Luna's nearly hit by a car and Kakeru saves her life. And it turns out he's friends with Himeko, who lectures him about "romanticizing space too much". In a fairly mature way, she chides a man of science for saying stuff like "there's a Goddess living on the Moon!" and such. Anyways, it's clear from their body language that she likes him but he seems oblivious, and now upset because she's challenging his beliefs- he chases her off brusquely, but she overhears his confession about the romantic ideals of the Moon to Luna.

Upon hearing the man go on about always having feelings about the Moon ever since he read the old Japanese fairy tales about Kaguya (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_ ... boo_Cutter), Luna is twisted up inside by newfound feelings of admiration for him- "what is this heartache I'm feeling?" she wonders. The girls all worry about a missing Luna the next day, but it turns into a childish argument IMMEDIATELY when Minako brings up the idea that maybe Usagi offended her and that's why she ran off. Artemis thankfully snaps them out of it (kinda dumb and out of character for the girls to move so easily into arguing when a sick Luna is missing). But then Kaguya summons dozens of "Snow Dancers" that make winter everywhere they go- hey, this light blue lady making an eternal winter and summoning snow creatures is reminding me of something.

So the Snow Dancers lure in all the Sailors and oh my god have I missed the three Outer Sailors transformations- that damn song and their cooler "lip rods" and updated transformation animations- that's epic. "World Shaking" shatters one, while all four Inners have to combine to take out theirs. The Usagis have trouble with a "Spinning Snow Dancer" illusion, but then SANTA CLAUS saves them... with a rose. Yup- it's Tuxedo Mask in a weird disguise, soon whipping it off and throwing a DRIEDEL (!?!), allowing Sailor Moon to wipe out out with "Moon Spiral Heart Attack". Then everyone's thawed and they just go on with their day.

Luna has a nice bit where SHE actually asks USAGI for advice after seeing Himeko taking care of Kakeru, curious about what couples do together, and "what does a kiss taste like...?", then it's Kakeru explaining that his poor health cost him his dream of becoming an astronaut, too. He hopes to live to see Himeko carry on both their dreams... and Luna realizes that a lot of Usagi's comments about relationships are accurate (like watching your man sleep). When the Sailors all figure out what's going on with Luna, poor Artemis sulks in his own silent suffering way, which only Minako is savvy enough to clue in to. But then it turns out that Usagi's the only person in the cast who HASN'T figured out that Artemis loves Luna (both Ami & Rei chide her cluelessness). But then Usagi follows Luna one day and they both watch Kakeru blow off Himeko's "maybe we can be together after I'm done my mission" in a very drastic manner over how she just sees the Moon as an object floating in space (he starts out smiling in a confident, secure way but then just YELLS at her).

Luna figures out immediately what's going on- Kakeru loves Himeko deeply, but refuses to let her know about his illness or his real feelings. And tearfully, she confesses this all to Usagi, crying about her own heartache and how "I'm not the person he was meant to be with after all" but how much she wishes she could be a human so she could be with him. It's really good stuff. But then the conflict rears its ugly head- Kaguya comes for the crystal shard (which has been exacerbating Kakeru's illness, absorbing his very life energy to empower itself), and when he names her, she formally adopts that name (oh, so she was just some nameless whatever beforehand, okay). And JUST THEN, Artemis remembers a "ancient manuscript" about an evil star that covered worlds in ice, but the power of love & friendship (oh, Sailor Moon) saved the day.

Kakeru's still dying from the crystal's existence, and Luna figures (kind of... oddly) that if she transforms into a "Princess Kaguya" for him, he can regain the strength to continue on. But it's FIGHT TIME- the Sailors locate Kaguya's base of operations as she covers the entire Earth in ice and snow, freezing nearly everyone alive. The Sailors fight and naturally are now AMAZING fighters against what is now an army of Snow Dancesr, with all their baseline attacks now counting as "Area Attacks", but they slowly get overwhelmed in some dramatic fight animation that seems them all grabbed in mid-attack sequence or just buffetted from all directions. The Outer Sailors actually get SAVED by the Inners, but all are soon wiped out, leaving only a late arrival- Sailor Moon. Kaguya promises to remove all pain from the world as she freezes it eternally, but Sailor Moon gives one of those dramatic speeches about how sure, heartache and loneliness and unrequited love can keep you up at night, but those feelings are just part of what makes life great, and that thinking only of yourself means you'll never love another and all that. She activates the "Crisis Make-Up!" part by unlocking the Holy Grail (from Sailor Moon S, naturally) and becoming Super Sailor Moon, but Kaguya overpowers her with one shot.

Sailor Moon risks her life by drawing out the Legendary Silver Crystal, but the other Sailors realize Artemis's comments about "love and friendship" means they can all "Care Bear" that risk away- Tuxedo Mask arrives to take out the Snow Dancers while they encircle Usagi and let her power up. Though even the cynical-ass older Sailors doing it is terrific. Triumphant music plays as the Sailors funnel their light through Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal, overpowering Kaguya in a scene right out of the first season's destruction of Queen Metalia & Beryl (even the same angle- firing it diagonally upwards), vaporizing her, shattering her meteorite, and removing all the magical ice that's covering the world.

And finally, in the movie's iconic scene, Sailor Moon's wish allows Luna to temporarily transform into a human girl- a distinctive-looking girl with long purple hair. The transformation sequence silhouette is, um, not leaving much to the imagination (they usually leave them "nude except for nipples", but this time they LEFT THEM IN?), but a yellow dress soon covers her up. She takes Kakeru to see the sunrise from outer space, and even Himeko in space sees them fly across like a comet- stunned, she confesses "The Moon Goddess is real!?" Luna/Kaguya convinces Kakeru to live on, and to find "your true Kaguya on Earth", which finally leads him into the arms of Himeko when she returns. Luna confesses she's happy for them, gifting Himeko the candy that's been a minor thing between her and Kakeru throughout the picture, saying "after all, I'm just a cat", but finally she runs into Artemis when he happily arrives and says "I'll always be by your side"- she gladly goes off with him, probably changed a fair bit. Naturally, as this is out of continuity, they have their own random thing in the Sailor Moon SuperS season.

So this overall was a pretty neat little story, though mostly for the relationships over the pretty generic "I want to freeze the Earth" one-note villain. Kaguya is one of the least-remembered movie foes for a reason. But Luna-As-Kaguya manages to be very memorable, and I loved the story with her, Kakeru, and Himeko. It was full of need, want, complexity and emotion- Luna's scenes would have been silly in many other places, but here you genuinely felt for the cat that wanted to be with a human, and I liked how he kept trying to force Himeko away despite his own wants. The whole nature of him being annoyed by her lack of belief in a Moon Goddess came off a bit weird, though I guess you have to accept such things in a Sailor Moon universe (I mean, humans SHOULD know Magic is real by this point in the show). Artemis being in love with Luna and her being clueless to it was a neat sub-plot, and him being there for her when it was all over was neat, if a bit like Luna was "settling".

The animation quality here was solid, but more "above-average episode" than game-changing, like the Sailor Moon R movie was- that movie had some TREMENDOUS, feature-film level animation, and this one was a lot moroe simple. Kaguya had white outlines for her body that didn't really "work" so well, and none of the action scenes were as mind-blowing as the intial flower assault in the first one.

Continuity-wise, it doesn't really "fit", unless you assume that they're between "Death Busters"-related stuff, as nobody is talking about the Silence. The Holy Grail is here like that's still an issue, but Chibi-Moon is nowhere prominent, there's no Hotaru anywhere, and the Inner Sailors are just kinda hanging around.

-The Snow Dancers are the Summoned Minions of Snow Princess Kaguya- she creates a dozen or so of them and they fly over Tokyo, paralyzing people in ice. Naturally, as this is a Sailor Moon movie, they each prove to be rather formidable at first, taking a few hits of "Season One" powers before dying (one takes Supreme Thunder and a Crescent Beam and lives- Mercury's "Bubble Spray" stops it and Mars using "Fire Soul" is required to melt it). Naturally, by the final battle they're going down in droves. Despite that, there's actually a neat sense to the finale in that the Dancers actually prove the BETTER of the Sailors- despite there being eight Sailors involved at that point, and the Dancers going down repeatedly to Multiattacks (Burning Mandalah) or Blasts that are now Area Attacks because they're fighting Mooks (Love-Me Chain & Sparkling Wide Pressure both flow through several Dancers in a row), they overpower the girls through sheer numbers. Jupiter & Mercury are buffeted from all directions by the flying creatures (Flight is actually pretty rare in Sailor Moon among villains), Venus & Uranus are grabbed in mid-attack-pose and thrown into icy walls so hard that they leave imprints in them, and more.

-Snow Dancers appear to be rather tough at first, only slowly being damaged by "Supreme Thunder" & "Crescent Beam", but are soon one-offed by the "Season Two" attacks. This means their toughness isn't overly impressive, but they're still rather strong (easily stronger than a Sailor). Their attacks seem Snare-related, but Paralyze beings entirely (when the Dancers are killed, their confused victims simply shrug and go about their day as if nothing had happened)- and one does a weird "Illusion" attack that dizzies Sailors Moon & Chibi-Moon for a bit, and leads Usagi to pick the wrong one when focusing her counterattack. The Snare is actually an Area Effect, as it strikes several civilians at once (and a car at one point), but at no time are any Sailors hit, so the level isn't overly high.

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +8, Fortitude +10, Will +8

Complications:
Motivation (Transforming Earth to Ice)- Kaguya wishes to turn Earth into "beautiful ice" forever. Eternally flawless and without pain or agony.
Vulnerable (The Human Emotion Known as "Love")- Kaguya is almost invincible and all-powerful- her only weakness is that warm feelings of love and friendship can kill her. But where are you going to find that in the Sailor Moon univerAH F*CK, she's dead.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 138 / Defenses: 18 (268)

-The primary antagonist of Sailor Moon S: The Movie, this INCREDIBLY-naked creature is a nameless entity that enters our solar system after millennia away- having been driven off by a "bright light" centuries ago, she returns with new vigor, and wishes to transform the entire Earth into an icy wasteland. She actually doesn't get much play- she sends her Mooks to deal with the Sailors for the most part and talks a bit of smack, but that's about it. Her meteorite home casts off a tiny comet that hits Earth, and is found by a human astronomer named Kakeru- he's a born romantic who waxes poetic over the Moon, but it turns out the piece of comet he's found is draining his own life-force, and empowers her to destroy the world. When he finds the character, he mistakes her for the fairy tale persona "Snow Princess Kaguya"- amused, she takes the name for herself, then leaves to commit armageddon.

-When the Sailors confront her, she amuses herself by sending Snow Dancers to fight them, then overpowers Sailor Moon with ease, even blocking her special "Rainbow Moon Heartache" power as Super Sailor Moon. When even the Holy Grail falters, Kaguya's all "LOLZ I will turn the world into ice and it will be flawless forever", but Sailor Moon does one of those "Sailor Says" speeches where she talks about how you have to take the bad because that's what makes the good so GREAT, and all that jazz- then the Sailors recall a speech from Artemis about how she was stopped in the past: the power of love drives her away. And so Sailor Moon unleashes the Legendary Silver Crystal, which always kills her- Sailor Moon's all "I'll die to save the Earth" but then everyone makes a circle around her and HOLDS HANDS, which is like the MDK of the Sailor Moon Universe, and so they fire out an energy beam of love and friendship and disintegrate Kaguya forever- the resulting Care Bear Stare also flies out into space and detonates her meteor like a heat (... cold?)-seeking missile.

-The character ends up being not very memorable- in a show that features THREE "All-Powerful Demon Queens" as Final Bosses, adding another one in a movie fails to really stand out. Her design is somewhat neat, but misses a lot of detail since she's basically just a big naked lady with two strips of fabric over her breasts (which appear not to have nipples anyways) and a pre-Elsa icy dress. And her motivation is pretty dry- "I want to turn the world to ICE!" is not really the kind of thing that inspires greatness in villains, you know? The movie is primarily interested in getting over the love story of Luna with the human Kakeru, and his true destined romance with the scientific Himeko- Kaguya's just the means to an end, and a distinctive, Elemental-themed threat.

-Snow Princess Kaguya is IMMENSELY powerful, able to generate blasts that can overpower even Super Sailor Moon and the power of the Holy Grail. The power to cover the entire planet in ice and snow (a Level 20-30 Environment Effect with Cold 2 and probably Impede Movement) comes from the special crystal she sticks to a rising ice spire in the Arctic, so isn't a natural power she can just use whenever. And the Snares & environmental powers of the Snow Dancers seem to be beyond her... but she can summon a dozen or so of them at will, and creates far more when her crystal attaches to the ice spires created. She also has the ability to survive in space, take any amount of cold, and life forever.

Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie

Post by Jabroniville »

SAILOR MOON SUPERS- THE MOVIE:
-And now we come to the final movie in the Sailor Moon movie trilogy, SuperS! This one made less than half what Sailor Moon R: The Movie did, and the SuperS and Sailor Stars seasons did less and less well as time went on, so the studio wisely ended things here. Again, the continuity here is kejiggered, Sailors Neptune, Uranus & PLUTO active, but no Sailor Saturn mentioned at all. Since it's a "Chibi-Usa" time, she's very prominent here, arguing with Usagi and getting into a "befriending the dewey-eyed fairy-like magic boy" thing with Not-Pegasus.

My biggest memory of this was finding a huge magazine-style book at a bookstore in Japan featuring this movie prominently, taking snapshots of it and letting you see the whole plot, which made it very easy to follow. I read this thing A LOT back in the day, and it was my look into the proper "Japanese names" for the attacks ("Fire Soul", "Sabao Spray", "World Shaking", etc.), even ones I hadn't seen yet like the Outer Senshi's stuff. This was a huge help in my Sailor Moon fandom at the time, and stuck with me so much I can still pick out exact images in this movie that remind me of that book.

Dear God, I've only seen this movie ONCE before and I still remember the fairy song (used to hypnotize children) like it was yesterday. The animation after that point is REALLY bad, though, with really sketchy, thin lines (like someone erased the inks too much, or they dried out) and some questionable animation and background characters. You can see the budget diminishing with time, here. In any case, after a pretty pedestrian scene involving baking (which only Ami & Mako are any good at, though Chibi-Usa's at least TASTE good), Chibi-Usa meets Perle, who's been watching the other Fairies abduct children, and they have one of those meaningless childlike conversations Chibi-Usa always gets into, while Usagi childishly demands Mamoru tell her who's more important to him- her or Chibi-Usa.

But then we get into the meat of the plot, as SAILOR MARS IS WEARING LEATHER PAN-- I mean, young children are being abducted from their homes by fairy flute-playing. The evil fairy brings forth "Bonbon Babies" that knock the Sailors around for a bit, allowing us a Transformation Sequence and a quick Mook Battle- melee attacks do no damage, but Sailor Attacks will. Venus pulls out "Venus Love & Beauty Shock!", but the others use SEASON ONE AND TWO ATTACKS, without Stock Animation, even! The animation picks up a lot here, but with some weird bits (oddly slow-running Usagis; weird shaky facial expressions to denote shock; REALLY bad face animation in a shot clearly never meant for the era of pausing DVDs). Tuxedo Mask arrives when the fairy, Poupelin, creates an illusion that stuns the girls, but he's held back by the mind-controlled children and badly injured by a Bonbon Baby, putting him out of the fight after like 30 seconds, which is pretty funny. Perle & Poupelin are revealed to be brothers as Perle opposes the use of violence, and Poupelin summons the image of Queen Badiane, yet another Evil Queen character in the franchise (that's like... four, now). She empowers the Babies to regenerate from all harm, and Poupelin abducts Chibi-Moon and takes his leave.

Two more fairies are revealed as three ships in total arrive in a Floating City sort of thing that materializes in space, and Queen Badiane talks some smack, elaborating upon her plan to Sailor Chibi-Moon. Apparently she abducts children to put them in "Dream Coffins" which will give "Sugar Energy" from their dreams (yes, really) to empower a Black Dream Hole that will soon engulf the entire Earth, putting ALL HUMANITY into Dream Coffins. She got the fairies to go along by promising them a world of "happy dreams" where they will never get hurt.

Perle takes the Sailors to "Marzipan Castle" and the enemies, but a cannon shoots down Perle's ship, and the fairies attack with more Bonbon Babies (pink and orange join Poupelin's blue ones). The other two fairies are pretty goofy, though, with weird voices and appearances- very gangly and odd- one covered in leaves, and the other with a dome hat and long tongue- they look "off model" compared to Poupelin, who at least looks like a well-drawn, detailed villain. The Baby surge seems to spell the end for our heroines... but then WORLD SHAKING strikes- it's Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune & Sailor Pluto! The Outer Senshi return! Neptune's Mirror sees through all illusions, so they've found the castle, and then it casts "Submarine Reflection", which marks the fairies' flutes as the source of their power- Uranus' "Space Sword Blaster" slices one open, and "Mars Flame Sniper" takes out the other, turning both fairies into doves (this would explain their lazier designs). Uranus slices Poupelin's as well, and soon he's a bird, too.

And then, in the movie's most legendary moment, Uranus contemplates Poupelin's suggestion that they're just trying to give children a world in which they can remain children forever... and Neptune says "but you get to enjoy most of life's pleasures as an adult, right?", stunning even URANUS into blushing, coughing silence! Perle mourns his brothers for a moment before Badiane, who is clearly a GIANTESS, threatens them all. Her Black Dream Hole grows while she tortures Chibi-Moon in her grip. Her Force Field keeps out Perle's ship, knocking everyone back... but the power of Sailor Moon & Perle's love for Chibi-Usa lets them break through (yes, really, that three-minute conversation from the beginning of the movie held that much power), and Sailor Moon leaps into the Hole after Badiane (who declares that she IS the Black Dream Hole).

She turns up in Mamoru's room, holding Chibi-Usa, but realizing that Mamo being so casual about Chibi-Usa's health ("Just let her dream forever") and declaring that "You are the only person in the world I care about" is way out of character, and promptly realizes that this is a dream. This breaks her out of her Dream Coffin, and she challenges Queen Badiane one final time, realizing the little words of wisdom from her friends earlier (about finding the bright side in sadness, the importance of future happiness, etc.) lets her "Care Bear Stare" that shit out, and when Badiane makes a final surge, burning the hell out of Sailor Moon, she calls on her friends to lend her their strength in ANOTHER one-off power feat, and their symbols light her up, rendering her immune to harm, and she & Chibi-Moon combined together for a double "Moon Gorgeous Meditation" that destroys the black hole (and Badiane with it) for good. Now how'd I know the power of love was going to save the day in this one?

This was... a thing. It's hardly bad or anything, but it's obviously the weakest of the three movies- the other two dealt with extremely complex emotions (lost love, self-loathing, want, desire, jealousy, etc.), while this one is just "we meet someone, three seconds later we're friends, and now there's a fight against another Evil Queen". It's so by-the-numbers that they pull the Ass-Pull "think about your love for others" feel-good solution to the overwhelming foe AGAIN, destroying the villainess with a one-off power surge. Like, yeah, it's set up earlier on with the Sailors' conversations over baking, and we DO know that the Usagis love each other despite all their arguing, but come on. The animation was questionable all over the place, but typically great in fight scenes, and the flying ships, Marzipan Castle and more had some of the best scenery in Sailor Moon. So on that front it's middle of the road. Some of the best stuff was the opening & closing sequences showing the Sailors as little kids (something we NEVER see in this show), Neptune's little flirtacious joke to Uranus, and some of the cool animation of their cinematic fighting moves.

-The creepy-looking, eternally-smiling Bonbon Babies are summoned from candies by Poupelin and the other evil Fairies, and are our standard "Mook Fight" (common in the Sailor Moon movies). They are immune to punches and kicks, often springing back off of things and hitting the Sailors, but ultimately are beaten by the magical energy attacks the girls create- this gives us some "in-show animation" instead of Stock Sequences for Shine Aqua Illusion, Moon Tiara Action, and other powers, which is great. However, Queen Badiane empowers the Babies, making them invincible- they immediately regenerate from all harm and are unstoppable until the Fairies' flutes are destroyed.

-Bonbon Babies are more annoyances than major threats, going down to a single energy attack from each Sailor, but making them invincible and in great numbers (each Fairy summons dozens) turns them into overwhelming enemies.

-The only evil Fairy in the Sailor Moon SuperS movie with a name is Poupelin, pronounced in French and being named for a kind of pastry popular centuries ago (pastry added to a crust). Given a very good design, he's your usual Snide Pretty Boy villain, and smirks his way into the fight against the Sailors. When he realizes they have super-powers and that his brother Perle has betrayed them, he's more annoyed than afraid, then bails on Queen Badiane's orders. Later, he and two other, more odd-looking Fairies, are seen in Marzipan Castle high above the Earth. The two others were clearly not meant to be much of anything- they're given plainer, uglier appearances (Banane is given a long hat and a pointy tongue, while Orangeat is covered in leaves and has a lot of colors- both are skinny and have under-detailed faces).

-Combined, they summon dozens of Bonbon Babies that insantly recover from all harm, making them lethal threats. However, the arrival of the Outer Senshi sees their undoing- Sailor Neptune's "Submarine Reflection" with the Aqua Mirror reveals that their flutes are the source of their powers. Sailor Uranus slashes one flute with her "Space Sword Blaster" attack, turning the Fairy into a bird- Sailor Mars takes out another's with "Flame Sniper", and finally another Sword slash breaks Poupelin's, causing him to dissipate into a green bird. Perle actually mourns them somewhat.

-None of the Fairies do much fighting or even have much character- they're just Minion Summoners and Limited Mind Controllers. The first time the Sailors attack them, they easily hit their flutes and transform them into birds. However, that Area Attack is wide-ranging enough to affect entire neighborhoods at once, causing children everywhere to wake up and move towards their flying ships, then fall asleep at will or attack people (Tuxedo Mask is defeated when children grab at his legs, leading a Bonbon Baby to knock him off the ship and be badly injured). They can also create Illusions enough to distract all the girls into running towards a gingerbread house and try to eat it, which might be Affliction-ish.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 167 / Defenses: 22 (277)

-The primary antagonist of Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie is Queen Badiane, who has the same sort of concept as numerous other villains in the franchise- Evil Adult Women. I mean, there are a LOT of Evil Queens in the Sailor Moon-verse, to the point where you'd think Naoko & Co. have an issue with aging. Queen Badiane is somewhat related to the "Dream Arc" of SuperS's TV season- she wants to freeze all the people of Earth in "Dream Coffins", allowing them eternally-nice dreams... whose power will allow her to create her Black Dream Hole that will envelop the Earth! She recruits four Fairies to abduct human children, but is opposed by Perle when he has a conversation with Chibi-Usa, and the Sailors attack her Marzipan Castle after Chibi-Usa is abducted (her "Sugar Energy" empowering Badiane greatly).

-Badiane, merely annoyed by everything, easily fends off the Sailors with her Force Field, preventing them from invading... but Sailor Moon & Perle are able to use their love for Chibi-Usa to break through. However, Badiane reveals that she IS the Black Dream Hole! She lashes out at Sailor Moon, badly burning her with Cosmic Fire, but Moon's love for Chibi-Usa causes her to carry on, and finally wake the girl up- the two Sailors Moon fly towards Badiane, hand-in-hand, empowered by the other Sailors giving up their energy deliberately, and pull off "Moon Gorgeous Meditation" together, piercing the Black Dream Hole and vaporizing Queen Badiane.

-Badiane is a tad different mechanically than the other Evil Queens of the Sailor Verse, having a Force Field strong enough to shatter the flying ship and being INCREDIBLY huge- she's easily able to hold a human being in one hand, using it to torture Sailor Chibi-Moon. Transforming into the Black Dream Hole (which could make her larger than the entire Earth if fully-empowered by dreams), she blasts away at Sailor Moon over a great distance and her death seems assured... but that "Human Love" stuff rears its ugly head and gets her killed with a Super Attack.

Ami's First Love

Post by Jabroniville »

SAILOR MOON SUPERS SIDE STORY- AMI'S FIRST LOVE:
-With Ami proving to be the most popular of the Sailors to the book's young fans, it was decided that she get a 15-minute animated short devoted to her. Things get adorbz immediately, as Ami goes on about all her studies and her habits and likes (which all involve studying- "my favorite thing about sandwiches is that you can study and eat at the same time!")... and then finds a LOVE LETTER addressed to her! Freaking out about it, she confesses it's the one thing she can't handle. Meanwhile, she discovers a "Mercurius" matching her perfect scores in the national "mock exams" which are going on at the time (third-year in Middle School is a HUGE time for schoolkids, as it determines the level of High School they get to go to).

Ami assumes that Mercurius is a male, and her obsession over him leads the other girls to needle her about her ROMANTIC tastes, figuring this is what's driving her. She famously (to the fandom) confesses that it's "Einstein", of course flooring everybody. She exhausts herself to beat Mercurius in every exam, and now we meet our villain- the double-ponytailed villainess Bonnun, who's hidden away in the school for years waiting for "lascivious" romantic energy from a young girl in love. She latches onto Ami, absorbing her energy and leaving her bedridden, while the girls actually MEET Mercurius, who's friends with Umino. And whatever they see stuns them into silence.

Kate Higgins acts out in a HUGE way as Ami is horrified to see her well-memorized lessons and knowledge fleeing her mind as she's covered with LOVE LETTERS, really showing a lot of range with the usually-calm Ami Mizuno. Usagi, Mamoru & Chibi-Usa arrive at her apartment to find her room turned into a weird psionic madhouse, but Ami now mistakes Bonnun for MERCURIUS, doing a big speech about how she did this just to beat her in the exames. This leaves Bonnun rather annoyed and confused, and now Ami transforms into Sailor Mercury! But with an all-new transformation sequence and attack- "Mercury Aqua Mirage" is a nice shiny blue ball of water that turns into a Multiattacking Blast that wipes the floor with Bonnun. And then Ami passes out and declares the villain beaten. Then Usagi reveals that Mercurius really just looked like Umino, but Ami's convinced he was a handsome pretty-boy.

This was pretty much a hoot, with Mercury being uncharacteristically insane the whole way through, demented by a "rival" and twisted by romantic thoughts that he must be some gorgeous hunk who clearly got good grades just to mess with her. It comes off as a bit boy-crazy and obsessive, combining her self-perfection trait with the confusing nature of romance, and it's pretty funny. I wish they'd have done more things like this with the cast, but Ami was the most popular.

Okay, I threw Bonnun's build onto the "Lemures Template", as it still kinda fits there.

BONNUN (Sailor Moon SuperS- Ami's First Love)- PL 10 (95): Concealment (Vision) 2, Weaken Strength 10 (Limited to Obsessively Lascivious Victims), Flight 2 [13]
-Bonnun is the wild, goofy villain in the Ami's First Love short, having awaited in an old school for years, looking to absorb the energy of one student's "lascivious desire" for another. Taking Ami's obsession with this mysterious "Mercurius" (who was matching her test scores) for lust, she latches onto Ami and absorbs much of her strength, taunting her with love letters and such... but Ami mistakes Bonnun FOR Mercurius, and assumes that this scholastic rival must just be seeking her death! So Ami just transforms and unleashes a new attack, killing Bonnun, who is mostly annoyed with being so misunderstood.

TMNT: Tournament Fighters

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES- TOURNAMENT FIGHTERS:
Release Date: 1993-94

-Like I've mentioned over and over again in my various threads, Fighting Games were once the biggest business in gaming- if you had a franchise, you could stick a Fighting Game onto it. We had DC Comics, Bruce Lee, Double Dragon, Golden Axe and even the TMNT getting in on the act. I mean, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat were generational smashes and changed gaming for good, so EVERYONE wanted in on that sweet, sweet gaming dough. The Shovelware got a bit nuts, with a lot of amateurish companies getting in on the act, and "SF Clones" saturating the industry (which helped kill the craze, naturally), but the top dogs generally made good stuff.

The Ninja Turtles were perhaps a more natural fit, given how their world was based around martial arts and kicking ass ANYWAYS, but oddly, they really only had one shot at Fighting Games. Well, three shots taken at once. Yeah, the weirdest thing about TMNT: Tournament Fighters was that Konami, a major name in the industry, made THREE DIFFERENT VERSIONS of the game, each for a different console. This was completely bizarre, as the Genesis & Super Nintendo were similar enough that you could do straight ports. But no- the plot of each game, the roster, and the overall appearance was different each time! The SNES version was the most "out there", with unique characters all over the place (Aska, Armaggon & War?), the NES version was more similar to the Archie Comics series (with Hothead as a major character) and was naturally much more simplistic and had a smaller roster, and the Genesis version had a more "Mirage Comics"-style feel.

A key issue with translating the TMNT to a video game is the fact that four members of your roster are determined already... and they all look pretty much the same, creating a fairly boring cast list compared to most fighters. The Ninja Turtles were always rather odd in that it was a team book where every single member looked and fought pretty similarly- "fast-moving ninja guy with weapons". It's like if you played SF II with a 12-person roster and four of those were Ken & Ryu-type guys. Another issue is the VAST roster of supporting characters, villains, and heroes in the various fictional worlds the Turtles inhabit- do you include toy-only guys? Comics-only guys? Can Jagwar & Dreadmon get some love? What about Scratch the cat?

The games might have done okay, but none ever got any sequels. Coming in so late in this generation of games, they were doomed to comparative obscurity as the Next Generation Era began.

For this set, I will be doing three different sets of builds, as the Turtles have three different movesets, depending on the game. So yes, you will see three different variations of each of the Turtles, and two of Casey & Shredder. Most builds will be modified versions of the builds I did for my "1980s TMNT" set, upgraded to including Fighting Game-style moves, same as I used for Street Fighter, SNK Games, and more- so Anti-Airs, Multiattacks, etc., depending on the character. I figure it'll take ten days, though I might speed it up, as the four Turtles kind of push the limits of "just re-posts" by doing them so rapidly, as their base stats haven't changed. A few characters are all-new, like Aska, Armaggon & War, so those will require original statlines.

TMNT: TF (Genesis)

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES- TOURNAMENT FIGHTERS (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Version):
-The version of TMNT Tournament Fighters that came out for the Genesis was probably the one most like the Mirage Comics, but also included some toy & cartoon-centric characters- the Turtles themselves are multi-colored, but have the narrowed white eyes- identical to their toy versions (but they're all the same shade of green, so no "Brown Donatello" here), and some roster members are from Mirage Comics. It made particular use of the limited three-button Genesis controller- to use stronger punches and kicks, you had to push the button and the D-pad towards your opponent at the same time. The third button was used for taunting (yes, in a THREE-BUTTON FIGHTER, they made the third button useless). Characters had three Special Moves, save for Ray Fillet & Karai, who had two. The game featured destroyable scenery that opened up other parts of the stage (which is AWESOME, and something you almost never see, even today). Fighters gain a "Killer" attack if reduced to almost zero health- they will instantely finish the opponent if they connect. You can also modify your character's strength and speed ratio after selecting them.

In the Story Mode, your character travels through various planets in Dimension X, the world of the bad guys in the cartoon, fighting clones of themselves on their quest to rescue Splinter from Krang. Called "Clone Leo" and "Clone Casey" and such, they are odd-colored and are interesting uses of palette swaps. It's one of the most clever ways I've seen of a Fighting Game explaining away why dear friends have to beat the crap out of each other in their Story Modes. You ended the run by facing a single Triceraton (the Evil Space Mooks in the Mirage comics), Krang in his cartoon body, and Karai, the twisted daughter of Shredder from the Mirage comics.

The game features only eight playable characters, but is notably the ONLY ONE to have April O'Neil as a playable fighter. Joining them was Casey Jones, Ray Fillet, and one new character, with three unplayable charactesr as Bosses. However, in 2010, a YouTube player discovered a way to alter the game's data to alllow them to be playable. Oddly, the characters have full movesets and even secondary color palettes, meaning it was likely they were intended to be playable at some point!

The graphics are... okay. Cartoony and simple, like the cartoon, with some wild stages featuring monsters watching the fight (like a giant alien head surrounded by fleshy appendages, a giant spider in a web, and a one-eyed lava monster). The sound effects are pretty bad, though, with weird, tinny noises, especially Leonardo's "Rolling Cutter", and staticy sounding voice acting.

The Radical Roster:
Leonardo
Donatello
Raphael
Michelangelo
April O'Neil- Very much NOT wearing her cartoon design.
Casey Jones- The psychopathic vigilante in his cartoon design.
Ray Fillet- aka "Man Ray".
Sisyphus- A new character, a four-armed Rhinoceros Beetle-man. Named Musha Beetle in Japan.
Triceraton- Mid-Boss.
Krang (Android Body)
Karai- Shredder's daughter- the Final Boss.

I believe Armmagon and War were from the Archie comics, while Aska was apparently (as dataminers found in the code of the beta version) originally supposed to be Mitsu from TMNT III, but changed to being an original character. (presumably because of how much that movie sucked and totally never happened) Interstingly enough, Armaggon managed to appear in the 2012 cartoon and another Video Game, Mutants in Manhattan, as well.

The third time they try the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, they will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 25 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 14 (152)

-Leonardo, the classic leader of the Turtles, is still sporting his dual katanas here, providing some interesting issues with his statline. See, Katanas are +3 to damage, which provides Leo with a huge +6 to damage, about the level of the Powerhouses of most Fighting Games. But in the GAME, he's clearly meant to be a Ryu-style "Shotoclone", sporting not only a ranged attack (hitting the ground with his sword and creating an SNK-style giant ground-spark that travels the length of the screen), but an anti-air uppercut AND a move that sends him spiralling across the screen! It's very clever how they sort of shifted the leader of the team into "The Ryu" so well. Overall, Leo is PL 8 like his cartoon self, and is one of the only "Ryus" in Fighting Games to have a +10/+6 ratio to his hit damage.

-"Clone Leo", like his brothers, is a blue/purple color with a deep red chest, but keeps the Turtle bandana colors.
