-An extremely bulky, muscular Bird Man, Luke is the first flying unit you get. You find him in Bedoe, where his people are said to come from, and he's the son of their King. Good friend with Peter the Phoenix (befriending him as a person instead of a mythical being of wonder and respect- something he knows embarrasses Peter), he's said to love adventures. As a fighter, he's a bit better than Amon & Balbaroy were in the first game (being more durable, making him PL 8.5 defensively), but takes a while to get good. As he can take Bowie's "hand-me-down" swords throughout the game, he often gets very good gear- he might even hit PL 9 that way if you stock him up with the best stuff.

-The second Bird Man you get in Shining Force II, Skreech is much more slender than Luke. You save him as a young chick in Bedoe, and then he mysteriously grows to adulthood almost overnight (NPCs in Bedoe say this has been happening a lot, and isn't normal), joining you later. As a pre-promoted unit, he has a cap that most other characters lack, and never gets too good.

Good ol' Kenseido still posts here, but mostly in the Game Room. I see FuzzyBoots, Spam & Catsi, too- glad to know we've still got so many old-schoolers here. I had forgotten that Spam had mentioned the Filipino heroes like Darna & co. Hi, Spam!

-Slade is the Ninja of Shining Force II, but unlike Hanzou from the first game, he's a scrawny Rat-Man who is extremely terrible in the early game. With poor defenses, he goes down quickly, so it's a reward to patient, canny players that he eventually develops into a true bad-ass. The sequel replaced Hanzou's "Desoul" and other spells with "Katon" & "Raijin", which are just "Blaze" & "Bolt" doing slightly better damage (not enough to be worth changing statistically in M&M- just a couple HP more damaging in the games).

-Slade was the thief who stole the magical Jewels of Light & Evil in the game's opening, and was thrown into jail in Galam- the newly-formed Shining Force finds him, and Sarah forces him to take responsibility for his actions and join them in the quest to re-seal the Devil King, Zeon. Reluctant and a bit cowardly, Slade doesn't want to, but is forced to help out, and soon tries to turn his life around. Eventually, it's found that he usually stole on behalf of the poor, like Robin Hood.

-Slade ends up a PL 10 Area Attacker, as the spells he gets dish out that kind of damage. This is in addition to his elite, PL 10 hitting power with blades (he starts out using lower-powered Knives)- his accuracy often leaves him getting "Double-Attacks", increasing his hitting power.

-Kazin is the first Mage you get in the game, and apparently turns out to be incredibly strong. Sporting a crush on Sarah, the dutiful Elven Wizard is childhood friends with both her & Bowie, and is an early recruit of the Shining Force. When his beloved Master Hawel is killed in the early moments of the game, he joins you for revenge. Following Sarah when she runs off crying upon Bowie kissing Princess Elis, he becomes her travelling companion, showing up with her in Shining Wisdom still hunting the minions of Zeon.

-Kazin, like Tao from Shining Force I, is a "Blaze"-themed spellcaster, but also gets "Muddle", "Dispel" (for dealing with enemy spellcasters) and the insta-kill "Desoul", making him somewhat versatile. However, Shining Force II adds the notion of the Sorcerer optional promotion, which turns them into a Summoner- their summoned creatures Blast away over large groups, but spread the HP damage to all targets, meaning it gets weaker as the blast carries further. The attack damage levels up with the Sorcerer, however, instead of being static like with the Wizards. This means that a Sorcerer is more limited, but potentially has a higher PL if they target the Burst over a single target. Thus, a Sorcerer is your shot at equalling the Power Level of Bowie- a rarity for a regular Class in the Shining series. Though it's recommended Kazin be a Sorcerer since his Wizard spells kind of stink, doing so prevents you from using the stronger Tyrin in such a role.

-Tyrin is an odd-looking, almost Goblinoid Elf Mage who joins you as the second offensive spellcaster in your group. Appearing to be very grizzled, he nonetheless adopts the very feminine "Wizard Shape" in fight sequences, which is quite amusing- long-haired and everything. Tyrin is one of four characters you're given the option of recruiting into the Shining Force- you choose one of the four, and then may recruit them later in the game after opening the gate at Moun. All are basic Classes in the game, but you can upgrade them any way you like, and they're said to each be the best of that respective Class, so you're best off picking your favorite of the lot. Tyrin is often chosen, as having a spell-slinger around is usually much better than just another Knight or Warrior.

-Tyrin is INSANELY versatile as a Blaster in the game, being the only guy I've seen with "Blaze", "Freeze" and "Bolt" all set up to their highest possible level (though you get "Bolt 4" VERY late- Level 60). Alternatively, you could end up with a PL 12 Sorcerer with more area damage. He's said to be the best Sorcerer in the game, generally.

-The beautiful, blond-haired Taya is your "Frozen in Stone" character in Shining Force II- she was the Priestess in the town of Tristan, but was turned into stone by the villain Zalbard- when Bowie talks to the "statue", she returns to live and joins the Shining Force in the name of her boss, Mitula. Pre-promoted to Sorcerer, she is there just in case you kept all your spellcasters as Wizards. Taya, as a pre-promoted character, is usually seen as worse than either Kazin or Tyrin at this role, though she'll at least have more Blaster powers right away (a newly-promoted Sorcerer will only have "Dao 1" to use). But seriously, most of the sources I've found say she's just the dirt-worst.

-Chaz is the "Alef" of Shining Force II, being a late-comer Wizard with most of his spells already, joining the party in the very end JUST IN CASE you kinda sucked and didn't level up your spellcasters effectively. Because of this, few people bother with Chaz, even though he's apparently quite good. The son of Hawel, the dead Wizard from early in the game (Kazin's teacher), he looks very snobbish, with a pointy nose, spindly moustache and wavy hair- an unimpessive specimen.

-Gerhalt starts out as a dorky-looking bearded guy with hairy arms, but eventually develops into a WEREWOLF, just like Zylo in Shining Force I! You first meet him in Polca, and he reappears later to aide you in helping out Prince Luke, joining the Shining Force. Like Zylo, he is a fast-moving bad-ass who needs no weapons and doesn't suffer in any kind of terrain.- Wolf Barons are extremely balanced troops with few weaknesses.

-NOW they're thinking outside the box! The dorky-looking, harmless-seeming bird Peter is actually a PHOENIX, and naturally the character turns out awesome, starting with good attack power and getting even mightier later on. Being bullied by children after injuring his wing, Peter is rescued by a Minister and meets Bowie & his group. Peter starts off as an NPC controlled by the computer, even during fights, but properly joins the Shining Force upon meeting the God Volcanon, who created the Phoenix race to be his personal agents on Earth. He grows so important that he takes part in most of the game's conversations- a true rarity in this franchise.

-Peter builds power as you use him, though carries the trademark power of Phoenixes- he can resurrect from death instantly! Good before promotion, once he becomes a full Phoenix, Peter is AMAZING- probably the strongest person on the Force. He can now fly perfectly instead of slowly, has resistance to fire, and does great damage and is very tough. Overall, Peter is a PL 10 powerhouse when fully-promoted.

-May represents a new kind of Class introduced in Shining Force II- Lyle's "Assault Knight" class is changed to the more lightly-armored "Ranger/Bow Knight" one. Still Centaurs, these characters fit more the archery-themed ones often seen in Fantasy images.

-May is faster than any other Archer in the game, being the only Centaur, but will still suffer from the movement penalties in heavy forests or mountains. Archers are also rarely chosen in the later levels of the game in general, but I still mae her PL 9, along with Elric & Janet, as she's said to be around as good as they are.

-Another "outside the box" character, Kiwi is a wimpy, adorable turtle creature, but is altered by magic and slowly but surely becomes one of your strongest characters, after starting out as one of the weakest. See, the Shining Force games, as always, reward patience in players- build up the crappiest characters in your roster and they can surprise you! Kiwi thus starts out as a weakling mascot (notable only for really great durability) and promotes into FRIGGING GAMERA. Flying about via rockets, he has monster attack and defense, tanking just about any enemy.
-Kiwi is discovered as a prison of a man who captured him and wished to sell him as a pet. Kiwi and two Beastmen who were also being sold ran away after Galam invaded Granseal, and the crying Kiwi was found by Bowie, who named him and made him a part of the team. Grateful, he is nonetheless not that great except for his durability, but later proves himself.

-Kiwi is like Guntz from the first game, but MUCH more versatile, being a powerful unarmed attacker, doing tremendous damage unarmed, being capable of limited Flight (he's still slowed by mountains), and even has the occasional random burst of fire as an attack- these "Random" effects are best used as Unreliable, as there's no control over them. Kiwi thus has PL 9.5 offensive power and PL 10 durability.

-Zynk is like Adam from Shining Force I, a powerful Robot awakened to help the heroes. He's so similar I didn't even bother changing the stats around- a high-powered, somewhat slow fighter.

-Claude is another late-game character and a classic "Totally Different Unit" type, being a huge living Golem who joins the Shining Force in the second game. Having lost his arm, he is incomplete and unable to move- you find his arm in the city of Moun, and eventually bring it to him in a magical tunnel in Grans. When he's given his arm, he reanimates and joins you. Extremely high in defense (Toughness, mostly) and #3 in Attack (Damage), he becomes an important member of the Force if used. This makes him PL 9 offensively, PL 9.5 defensively.

-Yes, LEMON. In a game unafraid to change names for absolutely no reason, they left in the subordinate mega-villain they named LEMON.

-Nicknamed the Red Baron, Lemon is forced into working for the mind-controlled King Galam, as he was a loyal general. When he discovered that Galam was being controlled by Dark Smoke, he attempted to attack, but was himself possessed. Now an emotionless killing machine, Lemon laid waste to people without a care, until the Shining Force removed the Devil from his body. Lemon attempted to take his own life out of the guilt for murdering so many innocent people, but found he could not- the experience had rendered him immortal! He joined the Shining Force, hoping to die fighting the Devils that had destroyed him- in the very end, he sacrifices himself to seal Zeon forever.

-Lemon's raw power and skill is quite elite- as the latest-joining member of the Shining Force, he has a sword that casts "Desoul" and hits for a lot of damage, and he's very tough himself. The "Red Baron" Class is very similar to the "Baron" one, being a Sword & Shield-wielding tanking melee class.
