-In a really cool notion, Shining Force II pits the group up against an actual swimming, mobile ANIMAL in the early stages of the game! Sporting a giant head and tentacles that count as separate "characters", the Kraken has a good amount of HP compared to your heroes' levels, but can be "lured" into good locations. An ideal spot is onto the top of the dock, next to the bridge, allowing for 3-4 melee fighters and two fliers to all attack the head at once.

-For stats, I just swapped in my Colossal Squid build, which is effectively the same thing and represents a creature with a good amount of HP (for multiple limbs) & Defenses. However, the creature may also spit bubbles at you, so he now has a ranged attack.

TAROS
First Appearance:
Shining Force II
Class: Enemy
Role: Giant Statue
Weapons: Talos Sword

-Taros (obviously an Engrish-style corruption of "Talos", the mighty statue of Greek Mythology) is a lower-level early foe, sporting half the raw HP of most of the Greater Devils, but is immune to all but the Achilles Sword. This means it's a good idea to have Bowie leveled up a bit, as he is your only Swordfighter at this point. You can only fight him after acquiring the Sword and talking to Rohde.

-Cameela is a blue-skinned shapeshifting Devil, serving Devil King Zeon. Sporting high attack and a Magic Weapon, she fights the Shining Force. She first appears as a "helpless, injured woman" and gets you to fight off some monsters. Once you do, she transforms into her true form, but is fought off by Sir Astral. She feuds with fellow agent Geshp, and is then left to face the Shining Force recklessly- she is fatally injured, betraying the Devils in her last moments by giving Bowie the "Sky Orb" that flies the huge Nazca Ship. Warning them of Geshp, she is burned to death by the villain.

I don't remember that much about the Shining Force II villains aside from Zeon, Oddeye and Lemon, apparently.

Also, something fun to mess around in with the Shining Force games is that the Japanese version of I, and the English versions of II and CD have a "Control Enemies" secret cheat code that letss you control the enemies as well. I suppose that'd allow for a sort of makeshift 2-player mode, even!

-A Goblin-looking Greater Devil, Geshp is a powerful "Freeze 4" user who can do a lot of damage. He typically stays away from battles, fearing what will happen, but eventually Zeon grows tired of his cowardice and tells him to get the Jewels of Light & Evil or be slain. Expecting to be killed (he suspects the Shining Force to be as merciless as he), he is shocked when they spare him upon the loss of his powers, since he is no longer a threat. Zeon, of course, has other plans- Geshp dies in fire.

Total: Abilities: 86 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 44 / Defenses: 12 (168)

-Odd-Eye appears as an amnesiac, injured youngster in Polca, and joins the Shining Force for a brief moment because the Devils are after him, leaving them to hang out with Creed, the Ex-Devil. However, he soon "awakens" and recovers his memories, attacking Creed and appears before you just prior to the fight with Zeon. Proclaiming himself an enemy, he attacks when you refuse to give up your Jewels & weapons- upon dying, he laments his fate, says he misses travelling with Bowie, and wishes he could relive his life as a normal person instead of a Devil. A pretty typical Boss with remarkable HP and a "Laser Eye" Area Attack that makes him PL 11 overall.

I would imagine that would be the point- or at least she really hated him and when she knew death was certain, she wanted to ensure his fall, too.

-King Galam is much like Ramladu in the first Shining Force game- a once-noble King manipulated and then mind-controlled by villains into fighting the Shining Force. Using his mighty army, he invades Granseal, lets the Devils reign, and kills thousands. Initially appearing old, harmless and decrepit in his profile image, he eventually turns mad and demonic.

-Holy shit- DEVIL KING ZEON. Now THAT'S a name!

-Zeon is one of the "Three Great Devils"- said to be Lucifer, Darksol & himself, but was turned on by the other two, who sealed him inside the Jewel of Evil. Without his powers, he fell to Earth and left a huge crater. The God Volcanon made the Jewel of Light and a holy sword which defeated the other two Devils. When Slade the Thief steals both Jewels, Zeon is unleashed upon the world- King Galam is possessed and leads an army into Granseal. Finally, after a year, Bowie and his Shining Force kill all the other lesser Devils and King Galam- finally, Lemon sacrifices his life to return Zeon to the Dark Dimension. He reappears in Shining Soul, working with Darksol, far less powerful- appearing like a "Whack-A-Mole" that shoots Poison or a Blast.

-Zeon is incredibly powerful, but more or less matches Dark Dragon, having the same attacks, even.

Shining Force Gaiden

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

SHINING FORCE GAIDEN- FINAL CONFLICT:
-1992 saw the release of a sequel to Shining Force I called Gaiden (Japanese for "Side-Story"- like Rogue One was to Star Wars), and came out for the Sega Game Gear, but only in Japan. It takes place 20 years after Shining Force, and in the same land. In this story, you play Nick, a newcomer to Guardiana, who is pledged to start a new Shining Force ater Queen Anri is poisoned by the bad guys. He travels to the Kingdom of Cypress and defeat their evil ambassador, Woldol, and the King of Cypress. Along the way, you recruit members of the anti-Edmond "Cypress Resistance". In addition to Anri, you can find chaaracters like Lug & Domingo as recruits, as well as the older versions of Ken & Lowe, who have been promoted to higher positions. In addition, you can recruit the children of Hans, Lug & Ken, as well as Tao's sister and Gong's nephew.

Image

SHINING FORCE GAIDEN II- THE SWORD OF HAJYA:
-The game proved popular enough to get a sequel called Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya, which actually DID get a release overseas, dropping the Gaiden II part of the title in the West. Here, you fight the demon-worshipping nation of Iom. Two months after the end of Gaiden I, Nick leaves to face Iom, but has to leave his mythical sword behind, as his arm has been turned to stone. Natasha is your new Main Character, and her friends form a new Shining Force to defend the castle and Sword. However, you are attacked and the sword taken, so you must go to bring it back. A few other characters return, and Hanzou & Musashi are both Secret Characters once more. In this game, "Blaze 3" and "Freeze 3" were doubled in power and given more range in the Western release, making Mages way overpowered.

Overall, the two games are considered high water marks for the Game Gear, which didn't have a lot of terrific games (nor the battery power to play them)- the latter game is usually in Top Ten lists to this day.

Image

SHINING FORCE CD:
-1994 saw both games combined into one Sega CD title that had a few new fights added, called Shining Force CD, and was released everywhere. In "Book 3", you play Nick once more, and he leads a new Cypress army to rescue Queen Anri from an old woman named Dava, who finds him unworthy of the title of "Prince". In "Book 4", Nick and his friends find that a museum exhibit of Nick's greatest enemies comes to life, and you must fight them.

The game wasn't well-reviewed for the most part, as it was largely a remake with better fight animation and some minor scenarios added to it, but the years were kinder. Next Generation at the time thought it was 4/5, and Retro Gamer says it's one of the best Sega CD games out there.

Image

SHINING FORCE- FINAL CONFLICT:
-Finally, Shining Force: Final Conflict came out in 1995. This game is more of a proper sequel, as you play Ian, the son of Kane (!!), and we finally meet Max once again- the hero joins you near the final battle.

Responsibility (Guardiana)- Nick was taken in by the people of Guardiana.
Responsibility (Shining Force's Leader)- As the leader of the Shining Force and someone important to many other characters, Nick is always targetted first by the enemy. Creatures that may choose any opponent will nearly always choose to attack him.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 83 / Defenses: 9 (180)

-Nick is your new "Max"- a humble swordsman with a mysterious past, he forms a new Shining Force to go on a Revenge Quest against another kingdom with an Evil King and an Evil Vizier. It eventually comes out that the King of Cypress is actually a fraud propped up by Woldol, and Nick is the true son of the King, and heir to the throne. At the end of the game, he slays Woldol, but his arm is poisoned and slowly turns to stone. In Gaiden II, he goes off to Iom, but is captured and about to be sacrificed to their Dark God- the new Force has to save him. You play Nick again in Books 3-4 for Shining Force CD, first chasing after a kidnapped Queen Anri (in a secret test of his worthiness of being a hero... despite him saving Anri in the prior game), then fighting revived images of his past foes.

-Nick has "Egress" like Max does, but also learns Bolt 1-4, making him magically very potent as well. However, he's said to be much worse than Max owing to poor MP (he runs out of juice for the "Bolt" spell quickly) and a lack of good Sword upgrades until much later in the game.
