-Warriors/Gladiators return in the Gaiden games, but are far diminished, having lost a Movement rating, meaning they will now badly trail behind the rest of your team. You get three- Ruce joins your party immediately, and his father Lug (from the first game) joins you immediately before the final battle, giving you an extra member! There is also the pre-promoted Gladiator, Gates.
Shining Force Gaiden I:
RUCE- PL 9 (87): INT +2, AWA +2 [8]
-The son of Lug, Ruce is said to be very weak, lacking attack power, in addition to the other drawbacks of Warriors. As an early party member, he acts as the best friend of Nick, the Main Character, and his boisterous, juvenile behavior is said to mask a "serious and focused side".
LUG- PL 9 (83): AWA +1, Expertise (Soldier) +4 (+9) [4]
-Now an elder, experienced warrior, Lug joins you in the very last battle against Woldol, and gives Nick the Sword of Hayja.
GATES- PL 8 (81): Expertise (Soldier) +4, STA -1, AWA +1 [2]
-Reflecting the first game, one of your earliest recruits as a wisened old bearded Dwarf Warrior. He was one of the Guardianan soldiers sent to invade Cypress, and one of the only ones who managed to escape. He joins Nick's rescue force and frees the captives in a fort. He is a boastful type, constantly bragging about his deeds in both battle and love. His Toughness ends up rather low for a Warrior, as it peaks early and rarely gets better- this makes him PL 8.
Shining Force Gaiden II:
JAHA- PL 8 (80): FIGHTING -1, Expertise (Cooking) 6 (+6) [1]
-Jaha is the same Jaha as the Dwarf Warrior from Shining Force II, appearing here as a small child. He uses a pot for a helmet, and also uses it to cook. He's one of the trio of friends at the beginning of the game, alongside Eric & Luke. He has poor attack, but strong defense, making him one of the better tanks in the game.
ROHDE- PL 9 (80): xxxxxxx [1]
-Rohde debuted in Shining Force II, and in this prequel he's younger, and already promoted to Gladiator, and fights to defend his village from Iom. Of the five Gladiators, he has the fewest weak points, sucking at nothing, but as he's pre-promoted, he will be weaker than the others if you put a lot of effort into training them.

PAIGE (Peiji)- PL 9 (81): FIGHTING +1 [2]
-Paige joins immediately, and is your most common Warrior in this game. He's extremely young-looking to the point of looking silly, and is incredibly stout.
RIDION- PL 8 (77): FIGHTING -1 [-2]
-A VERY fat, old dwarf, Ridion is said to have lower stats overall than Paige.

-The Jaguar-like Gyan is a Berserker, and appears in both Gaiden games as the loyal bodyguard of Nick, as the true King of Cypress. In the second game, he escapes capture, but doesn't join up with Natasha's party until much later. He has Beast-level movement, so is much faster than the similar Warriors- though his hitting power is somewhat low, he's just as good at Tanking, especially since he suffers nothing from terrain.

-Chester shares the name of a Shining Force II Knight, but is an Archer. When you free him from Iom, and he realizes that their forces have killed his king, he joins you. He is the most defensively-gifted of the Archers, but is average otherwise.

Shining Force Gaiden I:
APIS- PL 9 (92): FIGHTING +1, STA +1 [4]
-Apis is the son of Ken (and possibly Mae, as he matches her colors), and your first Knight. He stays solid, like most of the others- his attack falls off, but his toughness stays good. Despite that, he's the worst of the three Knights.
KASHING- PL 9 (95): STA +2, AWA +1, Expertise (Soldier) +2 (+10) [7]
-A wisened, mustached old Knight, Kashing appears very low-level at a later stage of the game, and is part of the initial invasion force of Guardiana that was defeated and scattered. He eventually builds nicely enough, having the most Toughness of any Knight in the game save Randolf.
RANDOLF- PL 9 (95): ST +1, STA +1, FIGHTING +1, Close Attack 1 [7]
-Randolf is a member of the Cypress resistance, and stayed loyal to Nick, the true heir to the throne. He sports a long beard and a scarred face, giving him the aura of experience, and his stern personality is very black & white. He's about as good as Apis or Kashing- his attack is the best of the Knights. He reappears in the second Gaiden game, having escaped capture with Nick's group, and joins Natasha's force to rescue him. There, he gains his extra rank of STAMINA, going up a notch (reflected in the scores above).
Shining Force Gaiden II:
ERIC- PL 8 (90): FIGHTING +1 [2]
-Eric is a childish, red-nosed Knight from Cypress. Bored by guard duty, he wants to be a warrior like Luke & Jaha despite his aristocratic lineage. Surly and arrogant, he believes his status makes him better than most people, causing him to at prideful and foolish at times. Eric is slow to level, especially defensively, only barely passing muster.
DAWN- PL 8 (88): xxxxxx [0]
-Dawn is a rare female Knight, with wild red hair and a feather above her ear, and dislikes the influence of the troublemaking trio Eric, Luke & Jaha on Deanna. She was friends with Natasha before the events of the game. Unfortunately, she is apparently very poor, worse than every other Knight in the game.

-"Miido" is asssumed to be a Japanese-ish version of "Mead". He's your everyday generic brown-haired Knight, who are usually dumped early on, but as this game only features TWO Knights, perhaps you're best off using him!

-A blue-haired female Knight, Sylvia has high all-around stats.

Shining Force Gaiden II:
GRAHAM- PL 9 (93): STA +2, Ranged Attack 2 [6]
-Graham is actually the one who stole the Sword of Hajya, thinking it could save his people. But he was wrong- only Nick could wield the blade. He joins the Force to make up for this wrong. He's another Ranger/Bow Knight, and apparently skyrockets after a slow beginning.

-Oddly, the Main Character in Shining Force Gaiden II is actually Natasha, a FEMALE character, and a Mage! This is a lot different than the usual sword-swinging male heroes you usually get. She at first hero-worships Nick, the hero of the first game, but in leading the new Shining Force into the land of Iom to rescue Nick, she begins to fall for the gentler Deanna instead. Smart, resourceful and charismatic, she is an effective leader.
-Natasha more or less combines the "Fire Mage" stuff from Tao & Wendy with the leadership stuff characters like Nick, Bowie & Max get, becoming a very well-rounded character. She has more toughness & MP than a regular Wizard, being able to cast Freeze 3 about 4-5 times per battle instead of 2-4, like May (who learns the spell more quickly) can. She even gets Max's "Egress" spell! It's recommended that you take both Natasha & May if you want to do well in SF Gaiden II.

-Deanna, who is actually a MALE character, is an interesting character- a "Secondary Hero" to join Natasha, the real Main Character of Shining Force Gaiden II. He has the Swordsman/Hero Class, Sword-wielding ability, Bolt 1-4 & Egress of the typical heroes, but is usually subordinate to Natasha, taking over only in a few chapters where the group splits up. Deanna is also interesting in that he's depicted as a very timid and shy character- he rarely causes a fuss and tends to be overly reserved, which is a great contrast to Natasha's loud, forceful personailty. This was meant to be a deliberate contrast by the game's developers, who wanted the main couple to play off of each other.
-Deanna is actually a soldier of Iom, but was injured after losing his entire unit in battle, and rescued by men of Cypress. Healing up, he joined them to do guard duty for some reason (gratitude?), helping them invade Iom. Searching for his older brother, a great general of Iom, he is shattered when he realizes that he was sacrificed to the dark god of his old kingdom. Getting over this, and opening up emotionally to Natasha, serves as his "Character Arc" in this game.
-Deanna is a sub-level version of Nick, lacking his uber-weapons, but still has Bolt 1-4 (making him PL 10 just with "Bolt 4"). He's overall PL 9- the weakest of the game's various Heroes.

-Bird Men are even more useful in Shining Force Gaiden, as overall, your troops are weaker and you have no "God Units" on which to rely. Therefore, a tactically-brilliant unit like a flier is extremely useful. Claude is the only one in the second game, and also appears in the first alongside Shriek.
Shining Force Gaiden I:
CLAUDE- PL 9 (91): FIGHTING +1, STA +1 [4]
-Claude is a Bird Man who appears in both Gaiden games, and is overall pretty solid. In the first game, he's a member of the Cypress resistance, moving ahead to join your team. In the second game, he invades Iom with Nick and the others, and escapes capture- regrouping with Mayfair's team and fighting once more. He's in "Book 3" of the Sega-CD version as well, helping at Nick's coronation.

-Shriek is a pre-promoted Bird Battler who was part of the original invasion force that was beaten. An enthusiastic, screeching fighter, he's said to be worse than Claude in every way.

-An adorable tiny green bird-man, Kiddo has solid defense. It's weird that someone so child-like joins you, though. Like, he looks like an olive Tweety Bird, for God's sake!

One neat thing Shining Force CD is did that you could choose any of the characters you'd built up over the course of both games to use in Books 3 and 4,(plus, characters from Book 1 that appear in Book 2 retain their stats when they reappear if you choose to carry over the data), allowing you to mix and match from both parties, retaining their stats.

-Musashi must have went over pretty well in Shining Force I, because two of the Game Gear games offer you Samurai as well! -Eric the Dragonute is actually the son of Elliot, a tragic villain you were forced to kill in Shining Force I. Carrying no grudge against Max and his friends, he instead wishes to take out Mishaela for what happened to his father. To this end, he joined the "Devil Army" of bad guys, but was suspected of treachery- he was set to be executed, but was meant to duel one of the bad guys. However, another guy interfered, and both were trapped- when you free Eric, he joins the Shining Force.
-Eric has the best movement and toughness combo in the game, but ends up not being your strongest attacker, partially because he joins pre-promoted to Dragon-Man.
