-The thirteenth (!!) Crimson Dynamo, Galina was featured in the Winter Guard Limited Series, and stands out from the rest of the often-interchangeable pack for the simple fact that this time the Dynamo is a WOMAN! A sexy, belly-shirt-wearing woman, no less. Now, female Legacies ain't rare in comics, but it's kind of funny that we had friggin' twelve of these guys before somebody thought to make one a lady- it REALLY makes her stick out from the crowd. Not a lot of female Powersuiters out there, either- it's probably the most-rare type of super-character to be female (for what I'll assume are obvious reasons). She was a graduate of a federal "Dynamo Pilot" program, and was given her suit by The Mandarin & Ezekiel Stane in order to take out Iron Man, but ends up just being a regular Russian Superhero after a point. She was fired from the Winter Guard amidst arguments about following orders (ie. she often tried to suggest her own actions instead of what team leader Red Guardian said), and became the "Ultra-Dynamo", attempting to form her own team (and possibly stealing the severed head of the LMD/Cyborg Red Guardian). However, she was never seen again after that.

-Galina is one of the "smart" Dynamos, able to do her own thing on the science end.

-This ultra-generic Crimson Dynamo was named Levi, and was sent along with the Titanium Man to defend Russian interests in Transia. They were quickly overwhelmed by an army of Iron Man Armors controlled by the "Zmaj", but were saved by Iron Man & the Radioactive Man. Later, in 2018, an unnamed Dynamo confronted Domino in her solo book's Annual, after she stole the original Dynamo helmet. However, Colossus arrived and punched Dynamo out, and then Domino stuck a bomb in his armor, which exploded. Colossus dragged his unconscious body out. I figure this for the same guy, since his concept is the same.

And I thought the DC comics Red Rocket had some bad luck with pilots. As far as I can remember, I only ever seen three Dynamos in action (Vanko, Bukharin and Shatalov) and I always assumed that the armor had at most five or six pilots, just like the Iron Man armor was temporarily piloted by other people.
In a way, having a crapton of Dynamos makes sense: a power armor is inherently a replaceable power set. At the same time, having multiple pilots assuming the same identity makes sense as a way to hint at the idea that a military organization might consider them expendable.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

Kind of. There is only ever one Crimson Dynamo at a time, the idea being that the Winterguard is eternal, so if any of the people die, they are replaced with a new version of that same costumed identity. A Crimson Dynamo pilot dies, you just call up the next one from the Crimson Dynamo pilot training program.

Now the Federal Dynamos on the other hand there are multiple versions of those & they are much shittier suits of armour then the Crimson Dynamo & they appear to serve as the step between the Crimson Dynamo pilot program & getting called up to the role of Crimson Dynamo. They work different roles for the Russian government, as seen in Black Widow, Deadly Origin, issue 2.

Just to make the entire thing more convoluted.

I think it would more surprising if she wasn't.

Other female battlesuit heroes include RESCUE, Ironheart and Steel. Really, if you look through major comics, female or not, most battlesuit related characters are either Iron Man related, mooks or both.

The Titanium Man- Second-Tier Mirror Image Villain:
-Titanium Man is the second "Power Armor" villain Tony Stark faced, and ALSO a Russian Agent with intent to destroy Iron Man. Really kinda... redundant, isn't he? His big lime green suit power Armor makes him stand out in a crowd, but he really never became anything as a villain- he just got trotted out there to lose to Tony once in a while. His origin was somewhat interesting, as he was a disgraced Communist official who convinced his bosses to let him fight Iron Man to regain favor- he had some men build him a suit in Ivan "Crimson Dynamo" Vanko's lab, but their limited tech skills made the suit twice the size of Iron Man's. Failing, he was abandoned by his bosses, and received a power upgrade from a third party (VIETNAMESE Commies, this time!) and got another chance- he was sent to retrieve the third Crimson Dynamo, a man who was trying to destroy both Tony and Iron Man separately. During the three-way fight between Iron Man, Bullski & Dynamo, Tony's girlfriend Janice Cord was killed- an enraged Tony beat the shit out of Bullski, leaving him in the depths of the Hudson River.

-Both Titanium Man & Crimson Dynamo fled to Vietnam, where they formed "The Titanic Three" with Radioactive Man, combining Tony's three biggest Commie foes into one group, but they repeatedly failed. Later, in the pages of The Mighty Thor, he formed the Green Liberation Front- an army of disaffected Vietnam War Vets who could transform into small credit-card-sized objects. He and the G.L.F. attempted to destroy America's financial records (and thus, the economy), striking another blow against Capitalism. He was opposed by Beta-Ray Bill & Sif, but the man who invented the Credit Card technology discovered his "Commander's" true identity and exposed him- the G.L.F. soldiers attacked him. Trying to teleport away, Bullski transformed into a card form himself, but the inventor grabbed the card and tore it to pieces.

Titanium Man Dies & Comes Back:
-In The Soviet Super-Soldiers one-off, Bullski was reactivated by the Crimson Dynamo, he went insane (due to the agony of being put back together incomplete- Dynamo wished for help against the G.L.F. soldiers) and slaughtered much of the G.L.F. before being captured- he was recruited into General Valentin Shatalov's "Remont-4", which was attempting to return the Soviet Union to Stalinism. However, he grew despondent and went a bit nuts again- he was murdered by Shatalov, who was controlling a Dynamo armor being piloted by Tony Stark. However, he later turned up alive with no explanation that I can find, and was simply a mercenary in the wake of the Soviet Union's fall. He appeared during the post-Civil War era- by this point, he had ceased to be an "Iron Man Punching Bag", and was simply a Journeyman Villain, floating from hero to hero and getting whupped- his victorious opponents included Darkstar, Spider-Man (in the "Iron Spider" suit), The Protector, and more. In his most recent appearance, he betrayed Doctor Octopus in his attempts at recruiting villains, saying he was "a Russian Patriot and not an American super-villain", giving information to the Black Widow- however, he was defeated by the Scorpion.

Titanium Man's Powers:
-Overall, Titanium Man comes off like he should have been a bigger deal, but like the Dynamo, he was really just a low-tier "Mirror Image Villain" in inferior gear. In effect, guys like him and Dynamo show the REAL brilliance of Tony Stark, as he's so good at building armors that all of his Mirror Image guys have shittier gear and lose to him all the time. Titanium Man's tough, but not uber-elite or anything. PL 10 is enough to tangle with Iron Man up to the '80s on an even keel, and he & Dynamo beat the HELL out of Tony in his weaker Stealth Armor until he depowered one (with his anti-Armor boxes) and combusted ol' Gremlin.

Titanium Man (Gremlin)

"I’ve always treated the entire run of a book, up to the point that I took it over, as worthy of respect. So I was always interested in where series started out, and how they developed in their early days. The Gargoyle had indeed been in Hulk #1, so I thought it would be fun to connect to him—but I had to make something interesting for my time, not just wave at the past. I thought, ‘Gargoyle + Kremlin = Gremlin’."[3]

-The Gremlin is a dwarfish mutant who was the son of the Hulk's first foe, the Gargoyle. Sharing both his father's grotesque appearance and super-intellect, he was a shrivelled, ugly kid with delusions of grandeur and a vendetta against the Hulk. Frequently attacking the Hulk with various weapons, he was usually beaten (once by the Hulk & General Ross TEAMING UP!). He created a sentient Triceratops Monster called Droog (betcha I know which novel ENGELHART had just read!), but also allied with some heroes against the Dire Wraiths, thus joining the Soviet Super-Soldiers.

-Sometime around when Boris Bullski disappeared, the Gremlin began using the Titanium Man armor. In this form, he faced the X-Men and The Avengers in the fight over Magneto, who was on trial at the time in X-Men vs. Avengers. He was also the Titanium Man who appeared in Armor Wars, in one of the big moments of the story. Since his armor had been created using Stark-Tech, Tony was attempting to de-power both him and the Crimson Dynamo, who were teaming up for the first time in these incarnations. Despite using his weaker Stealth Armor on this mission, Tony managed to beat the Crimson Dynamo, but the Gremlin proved to be too strong. He was a braggart and very over-confident, and he destroyed Iron Man's negator pack, but in the final moments, disaster struck- Tony attempted to escape using his booster jets, but the heat from them caused the titanium armor to ignite, having surpassed its heating point. The Titanium Man armor exploded, killing the Gremlin and forcing Iron Man to flee. Horrified, Tony was forced to deal with another moral problem on his journey (compounded when he had to beat Captain America in the same story arc, while de-powering the Guardsmen). A couple years after this, the original Titanium Man reappeared, so the Gremlin is likely finished.

-It's a bit odd, though- the guy was just a deformed Hulk foe, and then suddenly he's the new Titanium Man and a superhero, but then the Iron Man guys are allowed to kill him?

-Gremlin is enhanced a bit by his suit (I'm ignoring his Small-ish size, as that kind of thing is rather annoying and complex to stat out, and rather unnecessary in such small amounts). Otherwise, it's the exact same suit. Gremlin's worse at hand-to-hand fighting, though, but MUCH smarter.

Titanium Man's armor shows one idea I've frequently had about Power Armor; namely that the hyper compact armor Iron Man wears should be limited to Tony Stark style genius/experts with a lot of resources.

Basically, Iron Man is the epitome of armor technology. It's the peak of the raw amount of power and versatility you can make while keeping the suit form fitting. If you want to be a power armor guy without Tony's brains, skills or resources, you have to sacrifice either size, power or versatility.

If you sacrifice power, you wind up with Street Level power armor like the Beetle.

If you sacrifice size, you wind up with Titanium Man sized armor, or Hulkbuster sized armor with the power of basic Iron Man armor.

That makes Power Suit guys like Guardian/Vindicator an oddity, but in that case each suit should be a one trick pony.

TITANIUM MAN III-??

First Appearance: Various Issues
Role: Mirror Image Villain, Jobber Villain
Country of Origin: The Soviet Union/Russia

-Despite the return of the original Titanium Man, like the Crimson Dynamo, there have been countless other characters wearing the armor. Their identities are rather mysterious, like those of the various Dynamos- given that the suit conceals one's entire identity, and the fact that the armor gets used a fair bit for "background villain" shots and one-offs, means it could be ANYBODY under there:

* A third was seen attacking Stark Enterprises & Iron Man, possibly as a mercenary. Possibly he was Boris Bullski (he seemed to collect newspaper clippings of the man). A Titanium Man claiming to have been the above T-Man said his name was Andy Stockwell, and had no connection to the USSR. However, he revealed that he was a member of a Communist "sleeper cell" out to destroy the United States- he was last seen being lost in space, though he could have theoretically returned.
* A Titanium Man was hired as a mercenary to help Tony Stark pass the superhuman registration bill.
* A Titanium Man was seen as a member of the Soviet-loving "Remont Six", but was defeated by Darkstar.
* Another was seen being beaten up by Noh-Varr.
* A Titanium Man was among many Iron Man villains recruited by The Mandarin & Ezekiel Stane to take down Iron Man.
* A Titanium Man is recruited by the Spymaster to take out Stark Tower- he attacks Blizzard & Whirlwind when they try to abandon the mission, and reveals that he is the Kree Captain At-Lass (who was seen dying in Avengers: Operation Galactic Storm years before).

Yeah, I kinda like that notion, too- it makes Iron Man a lot more unique and interesting if not just anyone can find similar gear. That he doesn't even have a proper "Mirror Image Villain" on his own level (Dynamo is much weaker, and Titanium Man much bigger, like you said) makes this more clear.

Like, if it were easy, everyone would have a suit of it.

My next profile covers one of the most famous characters to come out of Soviet cinema. He is so beloved, statues of him (à la Rocky Balboa) stand in a number of Russian cities, and Russian cosmonauts watch his film before every mission as a good luck ritual. I refer to...

Krasnoarmeyets(1) Fyodor Ivanovich Sukhov (also referred to as Tovarisch/Comrade Sukhov): The protagonist of the 1970 film White Sun of the Desert, the most famous of the Ostern(2) film genre, portrayed by Anatoly Kuznetsov. He is a demobilized cavalryman of the Red Army wandering around Central Asia in the early 1920's, looking to get home to the city of Samara and his beloved wife Ekartarina Matveyevna. He is apparently somewhat of a living legend in both the Red Army and among the locals of Turkestan. One officer eagerly states that Sukhov is worth a whole company of regular soldiers. Furthermore, as quoted from a translation of his article on Russian Wikipedia:

"Sukhov left home at about 18-20 years old and since then has been traveling, in his words, "from the Amur to Turkestan." In the Red Army, he served, at least recently, in the fictional "Transcaspian international Revolutionary Proletarian Regiment named after Comrade August Bebel". Awarded with an honorary weapon - a revolver of the Nagant system with the gift inscription: "To Red Army Soldier Sukhov from Brigade Commander M. N. Covun". Sukhov is very handy (with tools), a sniper, an expert in pyrotechnics and handling explosives, has other useful skills, and most importantly- is familiar with the customs of the East and the psychology of its inhabitants. Sukhov is brave, calm, resourceful, quick to appreciate people, loyal to friendship and not inclined to underestimate the enemy. Sukhov positions himself as, "a fighter for the happiness of the working people of the whole Earth". Psychologically, he is ready to die, but his main task is not to die heroically, but to defeat the enemy and return home alive and unharmed."

I think that means he is really awesome.

Sukhov is truly heroic, as he will regularly put his own personal wishes aside in order to defend people, even strangers he has just met. And of course he is a true believer in Communism, but not in the sense of being a fanatic. Sukhov firmly stands for the principle that the Revolution can only succeed if good men defend it, and show its superiority through the example of good deeds. Granted, there is a satirical element to this as some of the ideologies Sukhov promotes in the film were seen as discredited in Soviet society by 1970, and even Sukhov seems to realize that he is out of his depth trying to promote them. But at heart the man is a noble dreamer, and that dream is for a better world even if the reality is far more bittersweet.

Fyodor Ivanovich's only real weakness is that he is not always the most perceptive fellow. The bad guys do get the drop on him several times during the film, but his skills are so amazing he can easily get himself out of tight binds. That or some stroke of luck saves his rear end; Fortune seems to smile down on Sukhov even if his allies are not nearly as lucky...

As for the film, it really is a must see. Only 80 minutes long, White Sun of the Desert moves at a brisk pace and speaks to values that transcends time, language, and politics. By turns exciting, funny, and tragic it may be the most pure example of a Russian action film ever made despite being a product of the Soviet era and including a many non-Russian characters and actors. I want to avoid giving too much away about the overall plot, since White Sun of the Desert is available for viewing on YouTube both free and subtitled in English. The next profile should be up by the end of the holiday weekend. This one is considerably different from the previous two, since we leap from the past to the distant future.

(1) Lit. 'Red Army Man', the official title of all Red Army privates from 1918 to 1946.

(2) Also know as a 'Red Western', a film that took the concepts of Cowboy Western and adapted to the Soviet context. They often featured white-hatted Red Army cavalrymen fighting Islamic/Turkic bandits and renegade Russian soldiers during the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922, although like the classic Western many films played with the formula.
