-Martens are usually a bit bigger than Weasels, but not enough to make any kind of statistical difference. The Sable is a type of Marten, and best known for its fur.

Marten Types:
BEECH MARTEN: Eurasian Marten species that weighs up to 6 lbs. For some reason, they're prone to attacking cars, biting through cables and tubes.

Image

AMERICAN MARTEN: 1-3 lb. mustelids with a broad range across North America.

Image

YELLOW-THROATED MARTEN (female): Distinctive-looking Asian Martens with black heads and butts, lighter torsos and bright yellow throat fur. They can weight between 5-13 lbs., and are quite muscular.
PINE MARTEN: Eurasian Martens weighing between 3-4 lbs.

Image

NILGIRI MARTEN: A black Indian species with bright yellow throats. They weigh about 4.6 lbs. Mainly arboreal, they live in some very elevated forests.

Image

JAPANESE MARTEN: 2-3 lbs. small Martens from Japan. They eat fish, frogs, small birds & mammals, and insects & fruit. "The fox has seven disguises, the tanuki has eight, and the marten has nine"- a Japanese saying.

Image

SABLE: A species of Marten, valued for its dark brown or black fur, they weigh between 2-4 lbs. Widespread across Eurasia, they eat mostly rodents and hares.

Not too unusual. :)

It's not uncommon for car collectors to have problems with covered cars having infestations of mice, rats, squirrels, etc. I think that it is related to the relatively tastiness of plastic and rubber. Also, that delicious feeling of being slightly shocked by the battery.

Still one of my favorite stories regarding these little guys and the folly of PETA and other environmentalist groups taking things too far. A group of animal lovers infiltrated a fur farm where sables minks and such were grown. now full disclosure im anti fur because theres no need for it, faux fur is easier to make and doesn't require the animal to die to be made. But these people go in and break the cages open and Free all the animal YAY they cheered

then barely a month later the reports came in suddenly local bird and small animal populations were being decimated. the reason? of course an invasive species of aggressive carnivores with no natural enemies had been introduced recklessly into the ecosystem

so the end result was rangers had to come in trap and kill the lot of them which had been released before they bred and created an ecological nightmare.

Total: Abilities: -16 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 33 / Defenses: 4 (38)

Era: Modern
Range: Eurasia
Colouring: Brown & white
Stereotypes: Sneaky, tricky liars.

Diet: Flightless birds, rodents; opportunistic hunter in general.
Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or exhausting tricks on larger prey.

-This extremely common European mammal is actually the original species of the Domestic Ferret, which was created more than 2,000 years ago (though the history is unknown, it's likely for vermin control). Despite that, it is usually thought of negatively ("polecat" being a euphemism for promiscuity in English literature). They will sometimes paralyze prey by biting the brain, then storing their still-living bodies in dens for future consumption. Better at bolting rats than Ferrets, they are known to be a bit uncontrollable and hard to tame, but can be outrun by a well-conditioned man, so are not as fast as other mustelids. They are hunted by Red Fox and both wild and domestic Cats.

OTHER POLECATS:
Image

STEPPE POLECAT: A central Eurasian species that lives a nomadic life hunting Ground Squirrels.

Image

FERRET: The domesticated form of the European Polecat, created to be a vermin-killer. The only mustelid sold in pet stores, they are known to be energetic, troublesome pets who will get everywhere.

Yeah, I mentioned some aspects of this story in my beginning thing on Mustelids. It turns out a lot of people REALLY underestimate how deadly these things really are.

-This critically-endangered species is more closely related to the Siberian Weasel & European Polecat. Their falling numbers are curious, though introduction of the American Mink (who are larger hunters who can work in more habitats) and a decrease in their Crayfish prey are the top reasons. About 17 inches long, they are broader than Weasels typically are. Semi-aquatic, they are slightly different than most Weasels, and can breed odd hybrids with Polecats, gaining the best attributes of both creatures.

-A larger, more robust Mink that overwhelms Europeans in overlapping territories, as these have been introduced. It is the only surviving member of the genus Neovison. They're about 13-18 inches long.It is the animal most frequently farmed for its fur, being more famous for this than any other animal- mink farms are common in many areas, and freed animals quickly turn into successful, feral predators, meaning they are very common in both South America and Europe, far outside of their typical habitat.

Other Minks:
Image

SEA MINK: Sea Minks are now extinct- one of the more recent carnivores of note to die out. They were from eastern North America, and may have been a subspecies of the American Mink. It was the largest of the Minks, being about 36 inches long (!!) including the tail. Their popularity for the fur trade led to excessive capture, and they were rarely seen after 1860- the last recorded killings were from 1880.

Arkite pointed me to some videos of a guy training American Mink to slaughter rats- with a dog backing it up just in case, the Mink tends to flush out the animals, and can often just run them down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjebAlfrexA

Saw you put up the american mink. I've actually seen a youtube channel where a guy has been using them as trained/natural rat extermination process
The guy regularly uses them to take out muskrats, which are probably four times as big with teeth large enough to easily go right through a mink... and boy do they know how little chance they have against those little buggers ;~)

For anybody who's curious it's under Joseph Carter the Mink Man on youtube, but let's be clear that if you don't like seeing rats get hurt you probably should avoid this.

Though if you just want to see a bunch of mink looking adorable I suggest this one where he lets them fish out of an aquarium.

As adorable as they look let me just say this now: Mink and Weasels make HORRIBLE pets. You might be able to tame them, but they're not really super friendly to start with, they're not super cuddly, and they do have sharp fangs and a tendency to bite.

Ferrets are far more friendly and cuddly, but it is like having a hyperactive three year old constantly running around getting into stuff. If you're not ready for that, or have the time and energy, they can make poor pets.

Always best to do research before getting a pet!

Disabled (Animal)- Grisons cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: -14 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 17 / Defenses: 6 (40)

Era: Modern
Range: Central & South America
Colouring: Grizzled black, brown & grey.
Stereotypes: None.
Size: Up to 24 inches long (8-13 lbs).
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Flightless birds, rodents, rabbits; opportunistic hunter in general.
Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or exhausting tricks on larger prey.

Fishers are 8-13 lb. mustelids from across North America that don't eat much fish- they are omnivorous and eat mostly small animals and fruits. Their names come from "fitch", associated with the pelt of the European Polecat. They are one of the few mammals who can descend a tree head-first. Though typically preyed upon by Lynx & Bobcats, they have been known to kill and eat both, largely by sneaking up on them during heavy snowfall while they're bedded down, and they're one of the few animals proven capable of killing Porcupines (largely through 20-30 minute bite-fests).

Other Mid-Sized Mustelids:
Image

GREATER GRISON: The large Grisons are part of the family Ichtonychinae, a mustelid type found across Europe & Africa. Bigger and stronger than weasels, they are robust and can live in various habitats, from high elevations to semi-aquatic ones. Their larger size made me give them higher FIGHTING, as this allows for more effective uses of Power Attack (a good way to differentiate tiny creatures from each other).

Image

TAYRA: Tayra are native to Central & South America, and max out at around 15 lbs.

Image

YELLOW-THROATED MARTEN (male): Distinctive-looking Asian Martens with black heads and butts, lighter torsos and bright yellow throat fur. They can weight between 5-13 lbs., and are quite muscular.

Musk +3 (+5 Affliction, DC 15)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +0, Fortitude +1, Will +3

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Skunks cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Power Loss (Musk)- There are several home remedies for Skunk Musk, allowing victims to wash off the disgusting odour.

Total: Abilities: -4 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 8 (53)

Era: Modern
Range: North America
Stereotypes: Easily-startled, messy. Horny perverts with consent issues.
Colouring: Black with white stripes
Size: Up to 3 feet long (5-14 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Insects, small mammals, eggs, birds, refuse, opportunistic hunter in general.
Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or snarling full-on assaults, keeping away adversaries with Musk.

-Skunks are iconic for obvious reasons- many things are smelly, and most Mustelids have musk capabilities, but none come even remotely close to the Skunk for using it as an offensive weapon. When cornered, they'll rear up, lift their butt into the air, and let loose a short-range spray of noxious chemicals, burning a disgusting odour into your brain for at least a couple days, until you wash it out. It only has enough shots for five to six uses, and it's usually a last resort once something just WILL NOT leave it alone, but man, it sucks. Pretty much smells like weed from what I've been told, but since I live close to a University that's also next to a forest with skunks in it (I see them fairly often), I couldn't differentiate between the two to save my life, being exposed to both odours regularly. It's one of the few animals given a wide berth by just about EVERYTHING, because the last thing any predator wants is to smell like a Frat Party for a week.

-There's some rather cool Skunk-types out there, but this is definitely the biggest. Many, like the Polecats, are of similar appearance but smaller, but the Spotted Skunk looks REALLY cool, with it's blotchy white back on a standard black skunk body.

-Skunks are funny critters to stat up, as they're nigh-useless as fighters (OK, they can bite and claw dogs and stuff, but aren't a real threat to anyting remotely big- they weigh 14 pounds tops, and don't have the Badger or Wolverine's reputation for viciousness)- they're PL 1 fighters as Elite versions. But that Musk... it's accuracy isn't great (common Skunks probably just have +0 to hit), but it'll cause some bad Affliction effects, which is always fun. I love screwing with Affliction like this- it's got the Dazzle effect linked to the Dazed & Stunned set-up with the Extra Condition boost. Its also got a 15-foot range, but it Fades. I also stuck a Feature onto it for two ranks (which I think is fair)- it makes the victim of an attack stink like crap for several days unless they take a remedy- it's nothing worth a full-on power, but it will RUIN their interpersonal interactions for a good while, making it a nasty attack. With the Musk, a Skunk is a PL 4 creature.

Skunk musk is a cross between a full on methane fart and CS gas that they use in basic training. its NASTY. the stink will actually burn your nasal cavities and as said it STICKS to you and DOES NOT go away until you wash it off with what amounts to industrial strength cleaning solutions.

getting skunked is pretty much a terrible experience and its why most predators leave them be. it hard to hunt as is but worse when your prey can smell you coming a mile away DOWN WIND.

and because its relevant and Hilarious

this scene from Seton Gakuen where the honey badger takes on the hyena is a must watch

actually the entire series is a must watch because its all funny as hell and surprisingly educational :D
